s a chill fills the air and beach chairs in the trunk of the car are swapped out for windshield ice scrapers, the realization that summer is over hits harder than a wave on the shore. But the arrival of autumn also comes with the coziest fashion season, the color-changing magic of trees, corn mazes and everyone’s favorite autumnal tradition—apple picking. Whether you’re going with friends or taking a day trip with the whole family, here are a couple of places that offer just what you’re looking for, and then some.

Milk Pail Farm and Orchard With 10 different varieties, Milk Pail has an apple suited for everyone’s taste buds. Gourds, squash, and pumpkins are also available for hand-picking. Stop by their fresh market to enjoy flowers, fresh fruits and vegetables, herbs, honey, pastries, syrup and more. U-pick farm located at 50 Horsemill Lane., Water Mill, and fresh market located at 1346 Montauk Hwy., Water Mill.

Lewin Farms

This east-end farm offers apples, berries, peaches, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and pumpkins for picking. Wickham’s Fruit Farm

Woodside Orchard

At Woodside Orchard, Cortland, Empire and Gala apples, among many other types, are ready for the picking. With semi-dwarf trees, kids will have no problem reaching for the perfect apple to take home. After scouring the

orchards, try the farm’s variety of ciders and hard ciders, all made on-site from fresh-picked apples. Pies, donuts, breads and candy apples, as well as fresh honey from their own beekeeping, await guests. Come back to their Aquebogue location after Thanksgiving to pick a Christmas tree. 729 Main Rd., Aquebogue, or 116 Manor Lane, Jamesport.

Harbes Family Farm and Orchard

With three different farms to visit, Harbes is a family-favorite for a reason. Their Riverhead location, 5698 Sound Ave., offers more than 10 different apple varieties for picking and a corn maze that turns spooky from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights from Oct. 5 through 27. Visit their Jamesport location, 1223 Route 25, for a corn maze, pumpkin picking and fresh farm stand. For their vineyard and Barnyard Adventure, visit their Mattituck location, 715 Sound Ave., where more than 40 farm animals

roam and games, play areas, a hedge maze, pig races and more await the whole family.

Seven Ponds Orchard

Among traditional apples, Seven Ponds Orchards also offers tomatoes, raspberries, sunflowers and string beans for the picking. A longer season than most, Seven Ponds holds their apple picking season from late August to late November, giving families plenty of time to schedule a trip. After picking to your heart’s content, take a hay ride or traverse through the corn maze. 65 Seven Ponds Rd., Watermill.

Hank’s PumpkinTown

Nearly 15 types of apples are ripe for picking at Hank’s PumpkinTown. After you’ve filled up your basket, try the corn maze, pick a pumpkin, let the kids play on the playground and get their face painted, mine for gems and pick up some treats at the market. 240 Montauk Hwy., Water Mill.

FOOD

A Taste Of Autumn: Apple Pie

E

very year, I reserve a Saturday in October and venture out to the east end to pick apples. From Granny Smith and Gala to Jonagold and Red Delicious, there are so many varieties to choose from. And every stroll down the orchard gets the wheels turning in my head of what to whip up in the kitchen. As an avid baker, I love fall because of the cozy flavors of cinnamon, pumpkin and of course, apple. While apple bread, cranberry apple scones, apple cinnamon muffins and apple crisp are all on my menu, a classic favorite is the traditional apple pie. Sometimes, I spike my pies with brandy or Fireball Cinnamon

Whisky for extra flavor or homemade caramel drizzled over the apples at the last minute. Whatever you decide to bake this season, add some apples to your list. Because nothing says autumn like a fresh baked apple pie. 6 to 7 cups apples, peeled and thinly sliced (these cook better than chunks) ½ cup sugar ½ cup packed brown sugar 3 Tbsp all-purpose flour 1 tsp ground cinnamon ¼ tsp ground nutmeg ¼ tsp ground ginger 1 Tbsp lemon juice 3 Tbsp brandy or Fireball Cinnamon Whisky Pastry for double-crust pie (9 inches) 1 Tbsp butter 1 large egg Additional sugar

1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Farenheit. 2. In a large bowl, toss apples with lemon juice and brandy or whisky and set aside. In a small bowl, combine the sugars, flour and spices. Add sugar mixture to apples, toss to coat. 3. Line a 9-in. pie plate with the bottom crust, trimming it even with the edge of the plate. Using a slotted spoon, fill with apple mixture and dot with butter. Reserve remaining juices from mixture. 4. Roll out remaining dough to fit top of pie and place over filling. Trim, seal and flute edges or crimp with a fork. Cut three slits in crust. 5. Beat egg and brush over crust. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake for 25 minutes, check to make sure the edges aren’t burning and bake for another 20- 25

Alex Nuñez minutes until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbly. 6. Cool on a wire rack and serve hot, with a drizzle of the reserved cinnamon sugar mixture and some vanilla ice cream.

*A lattice crust option also works with this pie. Simply cut your pie crust dough into strips and weave in and out, alternating over and under across the entirety of the pie. —Jennifer Fauci

The winning entry was Dr. Marjorie van de Stouwe’s work titled, “Autumn’s Bounty.” Van de Stouwe is a physician and a highly skilled artist, whose subject matter is primarily still life with an emphasis on nature, frequently featuring flowers picked straight from her garden. She began formal classical training in 2002, studying at the Stevenson Academy and then the Long Island Academy of Fine Art in Glen Cove. Her strengths in science and math took her on a different career path, however, and she entered the medical field. Van de Stouwe has continued a serious pursuit of painting while maintaining a thriving medical practice and raising three daughters. Find her on Facebook at Marjorie VandeStouwe and Instagram @ vandegram1. To learn more about LIAFA or to take a class (classes run year-round, seven days a week) visit www.liafa.com or call 516590-4324 to arrange a trial class or studio visit. FOOD

Sweet Potato High BY STEVE MOSCO

smosco@antonmediagroup.com

A

s we sit here fully ensconced in all the flavors of fall, let’s take a moment to appreciate the somewhat ugly yet all-together beneficial qualities of the sweet potato. Pulled from the ground much like the standard potato and other similar tubers, the sweet potato packs a nutritional punch and a highly distinguishable taste that makes it a stand-out side dish whether its fried, baked, mashed or thrust into a pie.

And no, a sweet potato is not a yam. Yams are a completely different vegetable that mainly grows in tropical regions. Firstly, where sweet potatoes are moist and creamy, yams are often dry and starchy. Not only that, yams wish they had the many healthy benefits of the sweet potato, which bestows upon eaters large amounts of beta-carotene that our body can transform into helpful vitamin A. As if that wasn’t enough, sweet potatoes also yield generous quantities of fiber, potassium and vitamin C. Healthiness is all well and good, but it’s meaningless if it tastes like tree bark. Luckily the taste of a sweet potato is like a potato, get this, only sweeter. Hence, it graciously glides into

both savory and sweet recipes. This makes the sweet potato the epitome of versatile side dishes. Chief among the salty and savory side of the sweet potato is sweet potato fries. The origin of sweet potato fries is hard to nail down, with some research suggesting the Savannah Grill restaurant in the Upper West Side of Manhattan in the early ’90s and other sources insisting sweet potato fries were born in Argentina in the 1940s. Regardless of where the dish began, it is a welcomed sweet and salty alternative to the more ubiquitous standard French fries. On the sweet side, Thanksgiving-staple sweet potato casserole brings marshmallows to the

dinner table. An odd combination at first, the toasty marshmallows actually add a caramelized smokiness to sweet potatoes—a flavor so all-around mind altering that it makes complete and total sense immediately after the first bite. Of course, then there’s sweet potato pie which bears a striking resemblance to pumpkin pie but, of course, is a much different experience. Sure, the ingredients are almost identical, but sweet potato has much more going on texturally and the filling is often more airy and lighter. So as the dried leaves and crisp air of autumn roll into the inevitable barren winter, fortify your soul with the many benefits of the grand sweet potato.

WINE

Top Tips For Trying New Wines

A

re you ready to add something new to your standard wine repertoire? To help expand your palate, two-time James Beard Award winning sommelier, Belinda Chang, offers expert insight into one of her go-to varietals.

“Fans of Pinot Noir should consider its hip French relative, Beaujolais, made from the Gamay grape, which is still relatively unknown among American wine drinkers,” said Chang. “And like Pinot Noir, Gamay is a thin-skinned grape that generally produces bright wines with low tannins. These wines tend to exhibit red fruit and berry notes, spices from good French oak barrels and earthy characteristics.” While they are quite similar, Gamay grapes are grown in the Beaujolais region in the southern-most part of Burgundy. Beaujolais differs from northern Burgundy in growing temperatures, soils and other factors. “If you’re looking for a delicious

quintessential and easy-to-drink French wine, the Louis Jadot Beaujolais-Villages ($13.99) is a good one to take home,” said Chang. Louis Jadot is one of the most venerable wine houses in Burgundy and the number one French wine in the U.S. Known for a vinification process that balances tradition and technology, their wines are affordable and versatile. They can be enjoyed by the glass or paired with a variety of meals. (If you prefer white wines, Jadot also produces an unoaked Chardonnay, Macon-Villages (SRP: $14.99) and a dry, crisp Rosé (SRP: $13.99) —two good choices for warm weather). “Most sommeliers will confess

that the Beaujolais on their wine lists are go-to recommendations to pair with anything on the menu and please every palate at the table. And, I confess that when it comes to a daily drinking red, instead of a ponderous Cabernet Sauvignon or a monster Malbec, I always want a slightly chilled, juicy Gamay,” said Chang, who recommends serving the Château de Jacques Moulin-à-Vent (SRP: $28.99) when you really want or need to impress your guests. So, exactly how do these wines hold up to food? “What grows together, goes together is a mantra that always works,” said Chang. “Look to the

locals for inspiration. When it comes to Gamay and Beaujolais, you’ll find yourself in the company of some of the best chefs and eaters in the world. This is Burgundian cuisine after all, which means coq au vin, boeuf bourguignon and even époisses— the world’s greatest stinky cheese.” According to Chang, Beaujolais is one of the most food-friendly wines on Earth, in part due to the natural acidity of Gamay grapes. Bottom line: these wines make a perfect match for brunch items, grilled meats, buttery pastries topped with anything and much more. —Courtesy of StatePoint Media

Use a slotted spoon to quickly transfer the cooked gnudi to the butter, add a little of the pasta cooking water and cook at a vigorous simmer. 3. Shaking the pan, add the stonecrab meat and leeks and cook until the butter sauce thickens slightly and begins to cling to the

gnudi. After about 2 minutes, add the lemon juice, Brussels and chopped parsley, fold together and serve in a pasta bowl. 4. Add 4 extra Brussels leaves randomly around the dish, place the caviar on top of the dish and garnish with the fennel tops.

Just A Teaspoon

The many health benefits of eating cinnamon BY ANTHONY MURRAY

C

amurray@antonmediagroup.com

innamon, which is a highly delicious and common spice, has been prized for its medicinal properties for thousands of years. It is the second most popular spice in the United States and Europe, after black pepper, and is native to the Caribbean, South America, and Southeast Asia. It is quite interesting how the reddish-brown spice is created. Cinnamon is made by cutting the stems of cinnamon trees, extracting the inner bark in the process. When the extracted bark dries, it forms strips that curl into rolls, which are also commonly known as cinnamon sticks, which can be ground to form cinnamon powder. The aroma and flavor of

cinnamon are due to the oily part that is high in the compound cinnamaldehyde. Cinnamaldehyde, scientists believe, is responsible for most of cinnamon’s powerful effects on health and metabolism. Cinnamon is chock full of antioxidants that protect one’s body from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. In a study that compared the antioxidant activity of 26 spices, cinnamon outranked garlic and oregano. Besides having anti-inflammatory properties and reducing one’s high cholesterol, cinnamon can also help cut the risk of heart disease. Half a teaspoon of cinnamon every day can help those who suffer from type 2 diabetes lower their blood sugar. When it comes to diabetics, cinnamon has been shown to decrease the amount of glucose that enters ones bloodstream after a meal by interfering with numerous digestive enzymes, which slows

the breakdown of carbohydrates in the digestive tract. In numerous studies performed, cinnamon can lower fasting blood sugar levels by 10 to 29 percent. Cinnamon can also have beneficial effects on Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease—at least in animal studies. Studies that were done on mice who had Parkinson’s showed that cinnamon helped protect their neurons, normalized their neurotransmitter levels and improved their motor function. However, the effects on humans have yet to be studied intensively. Cinnamon oil has also been shown to effectively treat respiratory tract infections caused by fungi and can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria such as

listeria and salmonella. However, it’s important to note that there are actually two types of cinnamon, Cassia and Ceylon. The Cassia variety contains significant amounts of a compound called coumarin, which is believed to be harmful in large doses. Research has found that eating too much coumarin may harm one’s liver and increase the risk of cancer. Ceylon, or true cinnamon, is much better since it’s much lower in coumarin.

October Movie P BY CHERYL WADSWORTH

editoriaL@antonmediagroup.com

T

he month of October brings us Columbus Day, Halloween and color changing leaves. It also marks the roll out of new movies including ones that are thought to be award contenders. When life gets too hectic, head to one of these new debuts for a few hours of relaxation. The following are just a few for you to choose from.

Hunter Killer (R) On Oct. 26, Hunter Killer debuts, directed by Donovan Marsh and stars Linda Cardellini, Gerard Butler, Common and Gary Oldman. Based on the 2012 novel Firing Point, written by Don Keith and George Wallace, this thriller involves a new American captain of a submarine that is thrust into action joining the U.S. Naval Seals in a rescue attempt of the Russian president who has been taken by a rogue general. This movie is action packed and Gerard Butler is terrific in a role well-suited for him.

Serenity (NR) The drama/thriller Serenity hits theaters on Oct. 19. Steven Knight directs an all-star cast including Anne Hathaway, Matthew McConaughey, Diane Lane and Jason Clarke. McConaughey plays a fishing boat captain with a shadowy past that re-emerges with the sudden reappearance of his estranged wife who is desperate for his help. This film will keep you on the edge of your seat and keep you guessing what is really going on.

Give your children a leg up, with Early Childhood Education. You want to give them a safe, loving environment. With structure and discipline. Not just day care, but a real school with certified teachers. A school that supports working Moms (and Dads), with before and after care—and gives students as young as three years old the fundamental skills they need to develop a lifetime love of learning. Of course, choosing a Catholic education gives them much more than an educational advantage. It also helps them understand their purpose in life and their obligations to others, reinforcing the values you live at home. Isn’t that what you want for your children?

An extraordinary talented cast propels this film into excellence.

A Star Is Born (R) Oct. 5, sees the much anticipated premiere of A Star is Born with Bradley Cooper in his directorial debut. Cooper also stars in the film and was the cowriter of the screenplay. He stars opposite Lady Gaga, Andrew Dice Clay, David Chappelle and Sam Elliot in the third remake of this classic musical mainly known for the casting of Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. Cooper and Gaga own these roles and Oscar buzz is already making noise. The romantic musical drama follows a country musician alcoholic who discovers a young singer with whom he falls in love with. BOOKS

Fall Into These Reads

From Trump Country to the Manning Dynasty, get cozy with new books this autumn BY JOE SCOTCHIE

T

JscotcHie@antonmediagroup.com

he cool autumn season may send us indoors, but not without plenty of new book titles to pursue. Here is a roundup of new books, from sports to biography to recent history and fiction that you should get comfy with this fall. Basketball: A Love Story by Jackie MacMullen, Rafe Bartholomew and Dan Klores (Crown) An oral history and a labor of love, in which one great after another tells both their story and the story of the game itself, this book follows a standard history: Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell, Jerry West and Oscar Robertson, Julius Erving and George Gervin to the Golden Age of Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Michael Jordan to finally, the era of Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. Space also is given to the college coaches who dominated: John Wooden, Frank McGuire, Dean Smith, Bobby

Knight and his star pupil, Mike Krzyzewski. The book covers the game in the postwar era. A nod to the rowdy, New York Citydominated game of the 1920s and ‘30s would have been helpful.

In the Name of the Father: Family, Football, and the Manning Dynasty by Mark Ribowsky (Liveright) With Eli Manning’s New York Giant career winding down, the time is right for another book on football’s First Family, in this case, In the Name of the Father by Mark Ribowsky. No one who ever saw Archie Manning play at Ole Miss could forget this phenom who could run and pass for yardage with equal skill. Archie’s career in the NFL was spent with mediocre New Orleans Saints teams, but he toughed it out for 13 years in the pros. His sons also had great college careers, but better luck in the NFL. Archie could run and pass. His son, Peyton was a drop-back quarterback and probably the greatest offensive force the game has ever seen. The forgotten Manning is

Young Washington by Peter Stark (Ecco)

From Cold War To Hot Peace by Michael McFaul (New York: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) From Cold War To Hot Peace is an account of a diplomat who was a child of the Cold War who also held a lifelong yearning for relations between the United States and Russia. McFaul was the architect of the Obama Administration’s “reset” policy with Moscow. That policy yielded an arms control agreement during the reign of Dmirty Medevev. However, once Vladimir Putin regained the president’s office, things went sour. Putin apparently felt his hold on power was tenuous and so, the author contends, he looked for a nation to blame. This book is a blow-by-blow account of disagreements with Washington and Moscow over human rights and Syria,

22A | AUTUMN! • OCTOBER 3 - 9 9, 2018

Cooper, Peyton’s older brother, whose budding career as a wide receiver at Ole Miss was cut short by injury. Along came the third son, Eli. Peyton shocked college football fans by choosing the University of Tennessee, but Eli, as with Cooper, signed up for Ole Miss. After a stellar college career, Eli won two memorable Super Bowl wins for the New York Giants. For many fans, it remains a scandal that neither Archie or Peyton ever won a Heisman Trophy. This is a timely book, but the author lets anger get the best of him when confronting the crossroads between sports and politics.

with the 2014 Russian invasion of the Ukraine blowing the reset policy to pieces. McFaul predicts another long winter of relations between the two nuclear giants.

Clock Dance by Anne Tyler (Knopf) Novelist Anne Tyler returns to Baltimore once again for Clock Dance, a fiction novel about an elderly woman who has survived the deaths of loved ones, only to be pleasantly surprised by the discovery of a new family life and a sense of community in her hometown.

The French and Indian War mattered greatly in that restless colonials realized that the mighty British Empire could be confronted and maybe defeated. The Revolutionary War was around the corner. The young George Washington wore the British red during his ill-fated battle at Fort Necessity. Young Washington is a scholarly biography that once again introduces the reader to the man’s great ambition and the influence his older half-brother, Lawrence, had on Washington.

The Great Revolt by Salena Zito and Brad Todd (Crown Forum) No one can articulate the rise of Trumpism better than Salena Zito, the Pittsburgh-based journalist. In The Great Revolt, Zito and Brad Todd scour towns in Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania, states won by Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012, but carried by Donald Trump in 2016. The authors interview Perotistas, gun-owning women and those smarting on how their cracker culture is ignored or ridiculed by the Hollywood elites. Zito and Todd see Trump supporters as being intimidated more by pragmatism than ideology. This book also dramaticizes the potency of an America First economic policy.

The Improbable Wendell Willkie by David Levering Lewis (Liveright)

The Children Act by Ian McEwan (Random House) Ian McEwan’s work of fiction, The Children Act, is a paperback reprint of a 2014 novel about a family court judge who gets involved with a young patient, a novel that is now being made into a major motion picture.

We do one thing. Lower property taxes Save you money

Recent biographies include The Improbable Wendell Willkie, a spirited attempt to resurrect Willkie, the long-forgotten Indiana businessman who became the Republican Party’s losing presidential nominee in the pivotal 1940 election. Willkie matters. Going into 1940, the GOP was America First, but its Wall

Street donors were internationalist. Willkie won the nomination over Robert Taft and the GOP was never the same. After losing to Franklin Roosevelt, Willkie helped to steer the GOP further into the internationalist column, forging both a World War II and Cold War bipartisan consensus that held for a good 70 years.

BREWERIES

W

hile many believe that Long Island summers are the season for an ice cold beer, others will have you know that the best beers come out of hiding for autumn. From pale ales to Pilsners and porters to pumpkin, there’s nothing like a day well spent at a brewery during fall. Luckily, Long Island is home to some of the most well-regarded brewing companies, with their products sold locally, statewide and even nationally. Plan a trip to any of these nearby spots to get a taste of the island’s best brews. Barnshed Brewing

100 Lauman Lane, Hicksville • 516-376-6514 • www.barnshedbrewing.com A Hicksville-based brewery that stays true to its name, Barnshed Brewing has been designated as a New York State farm brewery. Barnshed sources many of its ingredients from nearby farms, aiding the local economy and agriculture. The relatively new establishment is owned and operated by Bryan and Kristine Murphy, who launched the business with a little help from a Kickstarter campaign. Craft beers of all types are always available, with new beers featured frequently on tap. Popular brews currently available include Propaganda Porter with hints of vanilla bean and bourbon and a Barnshed Cider.

Lithology Brewing Co. 211-A Main St., Farmingdale • 516-962-0585

• www.lithologybrewing.com This brewery certainly makes up for its spatial limitations with big flavors. Craft beer is produced three barrels at a time, which makes for an ever-changing lineup of brews in rotation. Lithology, a term meaning “the study of rocks and sediment,” was chosen for the name of the establishment as a tribute to Earth’s most efficient water filtration system: its rocks. Since water is the basis of life, and of beer, the name seemed a logical fit. Beers on tap range from ales and stouts to Belgians, all available in the tasting room.

Oyster Bay Brewing Co. 36 Audrey Ave., Oyster Bay • 516-802-554 • www.oysterbaybrewing.com Also known as Long Island’s Gold Coast Brewery, Oyster Bay Brewing Company has been serving up its sudsy pints since 2012. The business aims to serve the highest quality of beer while staying true

to its nautical North Shore roots. Ingredients are sourced locally and from around the world to produce fan favorites like the Honey Ale (made with real honey from Bee Haven in Locust Valley), Classic American Lager, the Barn Rocker, Pilsner and Dumpster Fire IPA. Besides the brewery itself, several supermarkets, beverage distributors and local businesses sell Oyster Bay Brewing Company products.

Barrage Brewing Co. 32 Allen Blvd., Farmingdale • 516-986-8066 • www.barragebrewing.com A small hideaway in Farmingdale, Barrage Brewing Co. joined the beer scene in 2014. Current beers on tap include the Imperial Stout Who’s a Good Boy and a brown ale called Yada Yada Yada.

Barrier Brewing Co. 3001 New St. A2, Oceanside • 516-316-4429

• www.barrierbrewing.com This craft brewery began producing more than 50 locally distributed beers back in 2010. With a taproom pouring house on premises, check out brews like a Half and Half Stout, Rembrandt Porter and Pale Ale.

Garvies Point Craft Brewery 1 Garvies Point Rd., Glen Cove • 516-815-1999 • www.garviespointbrewing.com Garvies Point Brewery is a small batch, hand crafted, microbrewery specializing in brewing contemporary American craft Beer.

FASHION

Autumn Fashions Favor Frocks BY ELIZABETH JOHNSON

EJOHNSON@ANTONMEDIAGORUP.COM

F

all is here and the lines have been drawn back to the future with metallics and cute booties to accentuate the animal prints which are back in a big way this season. The inspiration of the fall is a throwback to the 1980s with menswear inspired jackets, fitted pants and billowy blouses. Autumn, with its brilliant colors, has designers using shades of brown in their designs with the classics. Conservative and asymetrical with a bit of bling makes the statement for the fall. Animal prints are in vogue and are on dresses, skirts, pants and coats. The colors are not just in the traditional brown and black for leopard and white and black for zebra stripe, but in an amazing array of hues which give it a more modern look. Veronica Beard has introduced a shirred skirt and dress which highlights the trend. (Veronica Beard has recently opened up in the Americana Manhasset) Sheen is back in the fabrics used. High shine leathers, metallics and patent materials give outfits a futuristic appearance. Fringe is key in completing the look, with beading accenting most outfits. Hemlines for dresses and skirts are low, running from knee to mid calf, and necklines are high, reflecting a modest look. Most fashion outfits had a tailored look, with fabrics caressing the body with a more fitted look. Blouses have a romantic streak with prim shirts and flowy boho tops giving a bohemian look to brandish with your favorite pair of jeans. The western cowboy look has come back with the prairie

Mountain G BY JENNIFER FAUCI JFauci@antonmediagroup.com

O

ctober sees the beginning of autumn’s beautiful color palette take effect among leaves, turning what was once a vibrant green into stunning shades of auburn, sienna, rust, gold and orange. While it may take a little while longer for Long Island to feel fall’s crisp breath of fresh air, Mount Airy Casino Resort in the Poconos is the perfect weekend escape to the mountains. A destination for all seasons, the picturesque Pocono Mountains take center stage in the fall, with more than 260 miles of hiking and biking trails, travelers can explore vistas, tumbling waterfalls and lush foliage. For a limited time this season, Mount Airy is offering a Mountainous Getaway fall package that includes everything one would need to experience a perfect weekend in the Poconos. “In autumn, the Pocono Mountains is ablaze with brilliant fall foliage,” said Vincent Jordan, vice president of marketing and gaming operations for Mount Airy Casino Resort. “Our Mountainous Getaway package is designed for guests to get a taste of the destination’s most sought-after seasonal experiences, all while enjoying the amenities of a vibrant resort in the heart of Mt. Pocono.” The appealing package includes a two-night stay in one of Mount Airy Casino Resort’s spacious deluxe rooms and one romantic dinner for two at Bistecca by Il Mulino, where guests can dine on hand-crafted pasta, local seafood and farm-fresh vegetables prepared in the classic fashion of Italy’s Abruzzo cuisine. Take in a tasting with a complimentary wine or beer flight for two at Mountain View Vineyard and Brewery, along with a self-guided tour of their sustainable vineyards and rain gardens. If booked in advance, guests will also receive a tour of the winemaking and brewing areas. Perfect for fall, the package also includes two pumpkin spice cocktail vouchers and for those who want to relax, one complimentary daybed at the pool

ARIES (March 21-April 19). Sure, you’re self-sufficient, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t also rely on others. You’ll be stronger for building a network. It will be lucky for you to ask for more help than you’ve been getting. No man is an island. And even if he were, islands are connected to the other landmasses if you go down deep enough. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). The group can be controlled through rules, procedures and bureaucracy, but those methods will only take the group so far. Deeper commitment and creative problem-solving are possible with an approach that involves posing interesting questions and inviting everyone to participate in answering them. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). A bit of turbulence may enter your relationship arena this week, and you’re actually better for it. This is just the excitement you needed to keep things interesting, and ultimately to bring you closer together with the people who matter most to you, a group that will grow in numbers in the weeks to come. CANCER (June 22-July 22). There’s a reason for the term “deadly boring.” Because when you’re bored, you’re not fully living life. There’s an upside to boredom, too, if you use it right. Boredom is a signal that you either need to or go deeper in search of what’s interesting or move on to more engaging subjects. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Most people don’t see themselves how they really are, but some get closer than others. You’ve a talent for objectivity. You’ll observe your own attitude with clarity -- a feat that takes maturity, honesty and emotional intelligence. You’ll ask yourself periodically, “Will this attitude move me closer to what I want or further away?” VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Your need for fun is real. It’s how you shake off the stress of life. Note that what’s fun for you may not match up with what’s fun for others. Do it your way, otherwise it defeats the purpose. Also, having a good time will be highly unlikely if you’re thinking too much. Go for completely engaging activities. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). When friends make mistakes, you might be implicated, even though you have nothing to do with it. This brings up an interesting point. What do your friendships say about you? Clearly, some are a better influence than others. You can be loyal and still open to new and beneficial relationships. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). There will be more than the usual amount of group work this week, and you’ll often be the leader in this. Any combativeness you encounter is best seen as a form of self-protection. Conflict can be avoided by helping people feel safe and comfortable. This will involve listening to their needs and giving assurances. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). This week, nothing will compare to the sweetness of family connections. You’re absolutely happiest when you’re giving to your next of kin. As far as friends go, the occasional bump in the road is to be expected. Presume the other person is innocent and new insights will develop from there. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Old problems come up again in a new form. These need to be handled once and for all. It’s time to regroup. What solutions have you attempted? What are your options now? By the end of the week, you’ll have a plan for going forward and all that you need to implement it. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You’ll dabble in high-stakes games and relationships this week. It’s natural to have any of a wide range of feelings. There are more and less effective ways of processing them. You can be authentic to your experience and still remain in control of your reactions, one of your many talents. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Before you ask for advice, make sure that advice is what you really want. Some ask for advice when they really want approval or attention. When you really do need guidance, you’ll get the best there is. You’ll be ready and able to follow suggestions and you’ll get a lot of support, too, with benefits ongoing.

Getting Your Home Ready For Fall

MYTH: It doesn’t matter where your thermostat is placed. TRUTH: It’s all about location, location, location. You may be spending more on heating and cooling than you need to be if your thermostat is in the wrong place. Placed in direct sunlight, you run the risk of getting false readings, as it can “think” the room is warmer than it actually feels, causing your air conditioner to turn on when it isn’t needed. Similarly, a thermostat placed near the kitchen often reads that the home is far warmer than it

truly is due to the stove and oven. The best location is on an interior wall, centrally located and near areas where you spend the most time, ensuring these rooms are the most comfortable.

that these are hard to install: A pre-taped edge makes for easy roll-on application, requiring no measuring, while fitting snuggly to indoor window frames to provide an airtight, crystal-clear seal.

MYTH: It’s expensive to draft-

blinds in cold weather prevent heat escape. TRUTH: According to the Department of Energy, shades and drapes can reduce heat loss from a warm room by up to 10 percent. However, opening curtains and blinds during the day when direct sunlight hits can also allow for a warming effect. In winter, draperies should be closed at dusk but opened at dawn. In addition, heat escape through windows can be prevented with window insulation products such as Duck brand Roll-On Window Kits, which create a barrier between outdoor air and a home’s interior, helping block drafts and air leaks. And, it’s also a myth

proof your home. TRUTH: Homeowners can actually save hundreds of dollars annually on heating and cooling costs with proper weatherization early in the season. How do you do it? There are many inexpensive, do-it-yourself weatherization products that are easy on the wallet and easy to install, requiring minimal—if any—tools. Windows and doors are the two largest draft sources in any home and should be top priorities for homeowners. Duck brand MAX Strength Silicone Weatherstrip Seals are quick to install and seal various size gaps around windows and doors that may be allowing air to escape.

keep your home at a constant temperature. TRUTH: A common misconception is that it’s better to keep your home at a constant temperature, even when you’re not home. However, if the system runs less during the day, it uses less energy. According to www.energy.gov, you can save as much as 10 percent a year on heating and cooling by turning your thermostat back 7-10 degrees from its normal setting for eight hours a day.
