Local Astoria Bank Branches Kick Off Annual Kids Tools For School Drive Astoria Bank is holding its 16th Annual Kids Tools for School drive through the month of August. The bank is collecting school supplies and donations to purchase supplies, at all branch locations, for local families who struggle to afford these items as their children begin the new school year. Kids Tools for School distributes backpacks, notebooks, art supplies and other assorted materials to more than 60 local schools, shelters and human service organizations. As part of the program, Astoria Bank will match cash donations up to a total of $10,000. In 2014, donations for Kids Tools for School increased 30 percent compared to the previous year. Astoria Bank is looking to build on the program’s success and to further expand its reach to thousands of local students. “Children who go to school without the necessary supplies can be at a disadvantage, right from the start,” said Brian Edwards, executive vice president and managing director of retail banking at Astoria Bank. “We
want all kids to have the best possible experience, and this program helps us to level the playing field by providing children with the tools they need.” Since its inception, the program has expanded greatly and evolved, largely through meaningful partnerships including those with the Girl Scouts organizations of both Nassau and Suffolk counties and Village Office Supply, a local office supply company that volunteers its services for transporting and warehousing donated supplies. “For families who are struggling financially, the need for school supplies can go unmet,” said Edwards. “With the support of our customers and community, we’re confident that we can continue to make a difference in the lives of many young people this year, right in the neighborhoods we serve.” Members of the community are encouraged to visit their local Astoria Bank branch to drop off supplies and cash donations. Visit www. astoriabank.com to find a local branch location.

Back-To-School Nutrition Tips For Healthier Families BY JESSICA DIMEO
SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
It’s that time again. Time to think about reading, writing and arithmetic. But are you thinking about school lunches? If not, you might want to give it some thought. Lunch represents one-third of the food consumed by students each day. And today, one in three children and adolescents ages 2 to19 are overweight or obese. Providing healthy options during lunchtime can set positive patterns and habits for a lifetime to come.
Tips and Heart-Healthy Ideas for Your Student from the American Heart Association Keep it simple Portable and presliced items are usually preferred by kids. Try sliced cucumbers, fruit slices such as apples or pears, and strive for a variety of colors and textures to keep it interesting.
Make it interesting Individual dips such as hummus or peanut butter (without added sugars and salt) are great with celery, sliced sweet peppers or whole grain crackers. Apples and pear slices with non-fat plain yogurt is a great hearthealthy option for a sweet tooth. Make a smarter sandwich Use healthier breads like 100 percent whole grain breads, tortilla wraps and whole wheat pita pockets. They are more nourishing and are the better choice over white breads. Make it fun When the kids are bored with their sandwiches, cutting them into shapes is an easy way to make it interesting again. Cookie cutters can be used to cut shapes, and chances are you already have them in the kitchen. Family time Planning and preparing lunches together gives kids the opportunity to talk about their food choices and learn about nutritious decisions. By
helping in the kitchen they are more likely to eat it and it’s a great way to spend time together as a family. Stay fresh Avoiding packaged foods will cut down on the amount of sodium your kids consume. For example, instead of canned fruit or fruit snack packs in syrup, make a fresh fruit salad. They’re sweet enough Limit added sugars. Sugar-sweetened beverages are the largest source of added sugars. Soda, sports and energy drinks, and fruit drinks are full of sugar. Look for low-sugar alternatives, but plain water is the best choice. Now that you have your kids making and eating healthier choices, make sure they are staying active. Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for developing coronary artery disease. The American Heart Association recommends all children ages 2 and older should participate in at least 60 minutes of enjoyable, moderate-intensity physical activity every day.
This can easily be broken down to two 30-minute periods or even four 15-minute periods. Inactive children are likely to become inactive adults, so get them moving today for a healthier tomorrow. Visit www.heart.org/healthykids for more information about keeping your kids healthy. Jessica DiMeo is the senior regional director of communications for the Long Island chapter of the American Heart Association.

Learn How To Transform Your School Locker
BY RACHEL HIRSCHHEIMER
SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
Ready to be your own interior designer? School is right around the corner and that means it’s time to start thinking about how you would like to decorate your locker. The options are limitless, the ideas are vast. Stores across the U.S. have been gearing up for students to show off their creativity and style. Locker decorating has been around since the ’70s and took a dramatic turn roughly five years ago. LockerLookz founders Christi Sterling and JoAnn Brewer noticed that when it was time to decorate their daughters’ lockers there was an obvious disconnect between organization and style. Sterling and Brewer took action and set out to create items in which students could design their own space while at the same time coordinating the colors and patterns. The popular online locker decoration company sells magnetic wallpaper, storage bins, gem magnets, flower magnets, mirrors, dry erase boards, chandeliers and more. “The great thing about LockerLookz products is the ability to mix and match your favorite colors and patterns,” said Brewer. They sell products ranging from aqua to damask. Being unique and trendy is what it’s all
about and you can be just that with LockerLookz supplies. Just Beautiful Boutique, a local locker decorative stocked company, brings in tons of items for school lockers every year. Owner of the well-known Williston Park store, Jason Albucker has been selling locker decorations since 2007. He said, “We sell every item you can imagine. Starting with light fixtures, chandeliers, wallpaper, magnets, rugs. Anything that can stick onto a locker we have it.” They sell more than 20 different wallpaper designs. From zebra print to army patterned, they supply it all. Although it may be challenging to choose from the variety of colors and patterns they offer, Just Beautiful will walk
you through how you can go about decorating the locker. It’s not the actual decorating that’s challenging but picking out the decorations part of it that’s the biggest obstacle. It’s all about expressing yourself. Begin with the foundation. Choose your favorite wallpaper design to line the inside and door panel. Then add a rug to match the wallpaper completing the floor. Now it’s time to pick out a lighting system. Whether you mount a chandelier or disco ball to the locker it’s important to light up the space. After all of the necessities are taken care of, finish off the look with shelves, picture
frames, magnets and other small accessories that fit the design. Staples also offers plenty of locker decorations. From the wired shelves to the storage cups, they have endless options to choose from. Keep in mind when in a store filled with locker supplies that you’re going to need a place to store extra pens and pencils. Purchasing the recyclable storage cup at Staples can hold tons of writing utensils and can bear the weight of a cell phone. Typically, schools won’t allow students to carry phones around so having a permanent place for it is helpful in being organized. One of the biggest problems students face is staying organized. Performance level increases when students are organized and are aware of where their stuff is. Organization in school all stems from the locker. Knowing where everything is can save time throughout the day and decrease stress levels. So be sure to purchase the necessary items for your school locker and be sure to keep it stylish and cute.

in your locker. The wired stacking locker shelf comes in an immense amount of different colors so you’ll have no problem matching it with your locker.
Back-to-School Drive The lives of the children served by Family & Children’s Association can often be difficult, and many of them don’t enjoy going back to school because it can be a time of stress and embarrassment as they show up with ill-fitting clothes and without school supplies. These kids need your help. Consider donating the following items: • Backpacks • Loose leaf paper • 1" and 2" binders • Notebooks
Wallpaper If you’re looking to give your locker a makeover, then the magnetic wallpaper sold at LockerLookz, Just Beautiful and Staples will transform the space into a bedroomtype design. Chandelier/Disco Lamp Lockers are dark, so brightening it up will give it a positive energy you may need throughout the school day. Magnetic Whiteboard Since you’ll be busy throughout the day your schedule will be jam-packed. It’s crucial to purchase a magnetic whiteboard to keep track of the dates and deadlines you will be expected to remember. Reinforcing your schedule throughout the day may save you a lot of time in the long run.
• Sneakers • Markers • Crayons • Sweatshirts/pants • Calculators • Glue sticks You can drop off donations at: Family & Children’s Association, 100 E. Old Country Rd., Suite 24, in Mineola, before Sept. 30. Don’t have time to shop? Visit www.familyand childrens.org/donate and make a donation. A nominal amount will be a big help to a youngster in need.

Magnetic Pencil Holder During the day, you’ll be running from class to class constantly in a rush. There’s no time to go back and get your pen or pencil if you left it in one of your classrooms. That’s why it’s important to always keep a filled pencil/pen holder on the inside door of your locker. Grabbing a pen/ pencil on the go makes it much easier when trying to get to class on time.

Here’s A Reason To Look Forward To The New School Year: Back-To-School Shopping BY RACHEL HIRSCHHEIMER
SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
Prepping for back to school can be depressing for many but one aspect to look forward to is the back-to-school shopping. Purchasing brand new backpacks, clothing, shoes—you name it—can be refreshing especially when trying to kick off the school year on a good note.
The Perfect Back-to-School Shoe
The key to picking out a practical shoe for the new school year is to of course check its price. One that can be worn with almost anything in every season is perfect. The low top laced Converse sneaker can be worn with everything. Dresses, skirts, jeans, leggings all match. The Converse sneaker is especially the best option for students because in most schools they can be worn during gym class, too! Say goodbye to changing in and out of shoes for gym and say hello to new shoe opportunities.
First Day Outfits Picking out a first day outfit can be pretty competitive at some schools. Kohl’s sells a ton of different clothing combinations. Combining a camouflage colored tee with a light jean jacket, a patterned skirt and a low boot is the way to go. Having the option that first day to stay warm in the jacket or take it off when it gets too hot is perfect because first days can be stressful and well, you get the point. If skirts aren’t your thing, then a tank with a hooded denim jacket, medium-cut jeans and Converse would be the best route to take. This outfit is equivalent to wearing two outfits in one because if you choose to take off the jacket, you can show off your patterned tank top. Keeping the jacket on gives off the fall vibe.
Tablet Case for Your Device Seventeen magazine has put together a list of things students will find helpful for the new school year. Because of the constant transition from textbooks to tablets, students are going to need a safe place to keep their tenuous devices. The affordable blue and white-patterned UChic tablet case has extra padding on the inside of it as well as two pockets for pens, pencils and notebooks inside next to where the tablet lives. They also embroider their brand quote stating, “We can’t do everything, but what if we all did something... something good” which is there to inspire you every time you take out your tablet. UChic also sells a matching laptop case. So what are you waiting for? Head to the stores and grab your back-to-school essentials today.

Finding a Backpack to Carry the Load First thing you’re going to need when heading back to the books is a sturdy backpack. There are endless options out there on the market but there are ways of narrowing the choices down. Backpacks to look for include ones with strong zippers, lots of pockets and loads of space. After that has been determined, pick out the one with your favorite color or design. A place to check out is Kohl’s. They have popular brands such as Jansport, Nike, Candie’s and Marvel bags and loads of color choices.
Materials to Stay Organized The key to a successful school year is staying organized. Here is a typical trend: the beginning of the year, binders are neat, pencil cases are stocked, lockers are clean. But as the year progresses, binders become wrecked, pencils are no where to be found and lockers are jam-packed. To avoid experiencing these typical problems, listen closely. Purchase folders for each class you’re enrolled in. At the end of each unit exam, pile together all of the papers from that topic and staple them. Then, put them in the class folder you created and store it in a safe place for when you have to go back to that information at the end of the year. That way, you can save room in your binder while reducing the load of your backpack.
A place where imagination takes root and flourishes. We give children the foundation for success. Advanced learning technologies, innovative math, reading, computer, and arts programs, and individualized instruction from highly skilled teachers inspire eager young minds at Long Island Catholic elementary schools. Your child also benefits from experiential educational programs whose real-world emphasis goes beyond traditional learning, challenging extracurricular activities that offer new growth opportunities, as well as our firm commitment to instilling the values of hard work and personal responsibility. Staying organized is important, not only with your binders, but also with your schedule. Purchasing a feasible planner for all due dates and tests can make you feel more relaxed when it comes to studying. Write down everything you have going on for each day in your planner including doctor appointments and family dinners. It will make it easier to plan out your week’s studying.

Building A Budget For Getting Back To School
THE PREMIER PRESCHOOL
Give carpooling a try, but track your costs to make sure you aren’t adding to your transportation budget. BY NATHANIEL SILLIN
SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
Back-to-school spending isn’t just about clothes and markers anymore. In a 2014 Forbes report, Accenture estimated that nearly half of respondents stated they would spend $500 or more on back-to-school expenses, including not only clothes and desk supplies, but electronics as well. Yet there’s one more aspect of back-to-school spending that’s growing and can add hundreds—and sometimes thousands—to a family’s overall K-12 education budget. Since the 2008 economic crisis, many public school systems have tried to make up for funding shortfalls by adding first-time or expanded fees for sports, extracurricular activities and specialized academics. This means that back-to-school budgeting, even for families with kids in public school, now requires a more holistic, year-round approach to all back-to-school expenses. Given their potential dollar amounts, parents should examine school fees first. Public education has never been completely free of charge beyond local taxes—parents have traditionally paid extra money to support their kids’ participation in sports, music or other extracurricular activities. However, many school systems are adding fees for a broader range of offerings including after-school activities, top-level courses, lab-based instruction and even Advanced Placement (AP) classes. So before you start spending money on clothes and supplies that can be bought off-season, on sale or possibly used, get a handle on how applicable instruction and activity fees might affect your budget. Parents in financial need may qualify for public
aid or grants to cover such fees; if not, choices will need to be made. Consider turning back-to-school shopping into a money lesson. Most kids like to have certain kinds of clothes, shoes or supplies. Those “wants” can be turned into a discussion about spending priorities, value, choice and comparison shopping. As kids get older, the discussion can expand to cover bigger-ticket purchases like smartphones, computers and fees for special courses and activities they want to pursue. Some of these issues might evolve into a discussion about earning money through chores or a part-time job. Once priorities are decided, every expense should be tracked, including a child’s round-trip school transportation, meals, tutoring fees or immunization and health care expenses not covered by insurance. And once that budget is set, it means a constant search for smart ways to cut. Some ideas may include: • Packing lunches at home • Working with school administrators to raise outside donations or grant funding to cover parents’ out-ofpocket costs • Organizing school supplies in one place to avoid purchasing duplicates • Scouting garage sales, thrift shops and online marketplaces for used, required-edition textbooks, instruments, electronics, sports equipment, clothes and other supplies you’d otherwise buy new; online resources shouldn’t charge shipping or return fees • Reviewing school and classroom supply lists before buying essentials • Bulk- and group-buying supplies

New Courses For The PSAT, ACT
Last courses for the current SAT BY ANTON MEDIA STAFF
SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
Dr. Ira Wolf has recently rewritten the Barron’s SAT and PSAT books to reflect the new versions of both tests. He has also completely revised the curriculum for PowerPrep’s courses for the PSAT and SAT. All of this summer and fall’s PSAT courses are for sophomores and juniors who will be taking the new PSAT that is being given for the first time this October. The old format of the SAT will still be given through January 2016. Consequently, PowerPrep’s SAT courses this summer and fall are for that version of the test, which will be taken by all seniors who are retaking the SAT, as well as by some juniors. Courses for the new SAT, which will be given for the first time in March 2016, will begin in January. In the meantime, any junior who wants to get a head start on preparing for the new SAT should take one of the courses for the new PSAT—the types of questions on the PSAT and SAT are exactly the same. There are also some changes to the ACT—much less drastic than those for the SAT—and, of course, PowerPrep’s ACT courses reflect those changes. Juniors who are unsure as to whether to take the ACT or SAT should take an ACT course before taking an actual ACT and, of course,
take the PSAT. That will give them a feel for both exams, which will help them make their decision. Because of all the changes to these exams, PowerPrep is offering more sections of its courses this year than last. The most important thing is for students to prepare conscientiously for whichever tests they are going to take and not to worry that the new tests are going to be harder than the old ones—they will be different, not harder, and all students are in exactly the same boat. The entire PowerPrep program is supervised by Dr. Wolf, the founder of PowerPrep and a nationally known expert in the field of test preparation. Dr. Wolf is the author of more than 10 books on test preparation, including Barron’s best selling SAT and PSAT books, as well as a book for the SAT subject test in math level 1. He has been helping students to achieve their maximum PSAT and SAT potential for more than 40 years. Every year, hundreds of thousands of students use Dr. Wolf’s books to prepare for the SAT, but only students here on Long Island can actually take the PowerPrep courses that he designed. Call 516-484-4468 for information on PowerPrep’s courses for the PSAT, SAT, ACT and SAT subject tests. Also call for advice as to when current juniors should take the SAT.
