CENTER

The latest innovations in kitchen appliances and smart technology BY CYNDI ZAWESKI

The latest trends in kitchen appliances aim to transform the heart of the home into a well-appointed command center, where everything is easily controlled by a touch of a button or the sound of your voice. The newest crop of home enhancements are straight up out of the Jetsons. Except, instead of Rosie the robot maid rolling around to lend a helping hand, built-in artificial intelligence and smart technology is putting you in the driver’s seat. Here’s a look a 2020’s most ground-breaking appliances. Samsung Family Hub Food brings people together, can a refrigerator do the same? Samsung’s first-ever side-by-side Family Hub aims

to do just that. Engineered to connect, its Family Board is a digital bulletin board where everyone can easily stick notes,

photos or videos they want to share on display, and that is just the beginning. In January, Samsung unveiled

its latest innovations at the 2020 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) in Las Vegas. The annual convention, in conjunction with the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), showcases the latest in premiere industry products, trends and technologies. It was there, that Samsung debuted the newest version of the Family Hub refrigerator. The latest model is designed not only to streamline communication, but maximize time in the kitchen. The View Inside feature, which allows users to peak inside the fridge anywhere, anytime, makes grocery shopping that much more organized. Plus, with the

SmartThings app, Family Hub becomes the remote control for your smart home, letting you instantly connect, monitor and control all of your smart appliances. Its technology is not limited to syncing with smart devices. Each model has a redesigned interior to fit more groceries. Plus, those groceries will stay

fresher for longer because of its all-around cooling technology and multiple vents to keep food evenly cooled and fresh. It’s not just smart, it looks good, too. Its modern form and premium built-in look, characterized by elegant flat doors, minimal dispenser

COMMAND CENTER from page 3B and recessed handles, blend seamlessly with existing kitchen appliances and cabinetry. Another bonus: it comes with a fingerprint-resistant finish that’s easy to keep clean. During KBIS, Samsung also unveiled a new lineup of slidein ranges that make cooking more convenient. Certain models of the slide-in ranges can be controlled with voice assistants, allowing you to bring out your full potential as a home chef. Make the most of prep time by instructing the range to

preheat the oven while you’re mixing ingredients for a meal. It will even begin to learn your cooking preferences. For example, if you frequently set your oven to a certain temperature to bake your family’s favorite cookies, it will suggest that temperature first when you preheat your oven. The new ranges also come with air frying capabilities and can remotely monitor and adjust cooking times or temperatures from your smartphone, even when you’re in the family room instead of the kitchen.

GE Next Gen Kitchen Hub The original GE Kitchen Hub, introduced last year, offered just about everything a tech savvy home chef could wish for in a smart appliance. Designed as hood range with a built-in smart display, the Kitchen Hub boasts cameras that could view, record and share your cooktop, recipe apps and more. The latest model, dubbed the GE Next Gen Kitchen Hub, takes it a step further with the addition of a built-in microwave and an additional third camera inside the oven that’s integrated into an artificial intelligence computer. Featuring a sizable and chic 27-inch smart touch screen and ventilation combo, the new Kitchen Hub can still easily fit in the space above the range. The Next Gen’s AI technology helps home chefs select recipes based on available ingredients detected by a camera, assists in detection of doneness of food items, raises or lowers oven temperature and notes any missing ingredients. The third in-oven camera, allows

users to view their meals as it cooks. The tablet-meets-microwave can also help minimize food waste. According to GE, American families waste 20 percent of the food they buy, equating to roughly $800 per year in waste. The AI powered computer vision helps people use the ingredients they have on hand to quickly create meal options. With features such as a built-in Google Assistant, owners can also create grocery lists and plan meals. The Next Gen also offers multi-angle live video chats and connectivity to other smart home devices, like temperature control, lighting systems and cameras. If that wasn’t enough, you can also stream Netflix and Spotify from the display. The next gen Kitchen Hub will be available in late 2020. AI powered computer vision cooking technology, accessible for all GE appliances with cameras, will also be available in late 2020.

The U by Moen Smart Faucet In today’s smart homes, even the faucet is engineered to amaze. Winner of the 2020 KBIS Smart Home Technology award, The U by Moen Smart Faucet’s intuitive voice-activation technology is designed to streamline the most mundane kitchen tasks. Its voice control allows users to start and stop water flow, as well as perform specific tasks on command through digital voice assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. For example, with just a few words, the faucet provides the perfect amount and temperature of water for preparing a baby bottle or fills a pot with exactly four quarts of hot water while you chop veggies for dinner. No more multitasking blunders, here. Users are able to control

the U by Moen Smart Faucet in multiple ways in addition to voice control. A Wave Sensor positioned at the front of the faucet turns water on or off with a simple hand movement while the handle on the side of the faucet offers manual operation, letting users adjust flow and temperature. While it’s not uncommon for smart home appliances to have a modern aesthetic, the U by Moen is available in a range of finishes to suit consumers’ varying styles and budgets. Whether homeowners are designing a modern masterpiece or prefer to take a more traditional route, Moen has an option.

PANTONE ANTONE YOUR HOME

The Color of the Year is calm and confident BY CYNDI ZAWESKI

Each December, the colorphiles at the Pantone Color Institute announce their much-anticipated Color of the Year. For more than 20 years, the instantly-influential shade has dictated everything from the runways of fashion week to home décor. This year’s haute hue, Classic Blue, instills calm, confidence and connection as we embark into 2020.

S

uggestive of the sky at dusk, the Color Institute describes the hue as “non-aggressive” and “reassuring,” bringing a sense of peace and tranquility to the human spirit, offering refuge. Announced ahead of a contentious election year, Pantone’s 2020 selection aims to comfort. “We are living in a time that requires trust and faith,” Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said.“Imbued with a deep resonance, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue provides an anchoring foundation. A boundless blue evocative of the vast and infinite evening sky, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue encourages us to look beyond the obvious to expand our thinking; challenging us to think more deeply, increase

our perspective and open the flow of communication.” In recent years, the Color Institute based its selections on “life-affirming” qualities. Last year’s Living Coral symbolized “our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits.” While the previous year, Ultra Violet was chosen for its ability to “communicate originality, ingenuity, and visionary.” A restful color, Classic Blue, that is slightly lighter than navy, lends itself to relaxed and elegant decor that embraces comfort. It’s easy to incorporate in interiors and pairs well with a variety of colors, especially white, gray, taupe, yellow and greens. Here are a few ways to Pantone your home this spring:

ntertain and impress guests with grade A cocktails without the hassle of going out to the bar. Drinking and getting together with friends shouldn’t be a stressful experience and with a bar cart right at your fingertips, you have an easy fix for avoiding large crowds, long waits and transportation coordination. The bar cart makes creating cocktails convenient and less cluttered. Everything needed for the perfect drink can be found right on the shelves of the cart. No more crowded bottles on the countertop or endless searching in a cabinet to find that specific liquor to make one cocktail. The bar cart is perfect for any mixologist looking to curate a more laid-back drinking experience. “I think with bar carts there has to be sufficient room to add another piece of furniture and enough room so people don’t bump into it,” Dafna Adler, head interior designer of Interiors by Dafna Adler, said. “I use it for one of two purposes: I use it as a place where I can put alcohol and drinks so it’s not on the table during the meal and not blocking conversation, or I use it as a placeholder to transfer something from the kitchen to the dining room.”

SERVE IN STYLE WITH OUR FAVORITE BAR CARTS BY CYNDI ZAWESKI

Stock the shelves of these go-to beverage carts. Melrose Bar Cart

Create top-shelf cocktails at home A bar cart can make a statement. It generally sets a tone for the guests as a well as directs them towards the focal point of the party. It should be regarded as a welcome for those invited into your home. During the colder months, it’s best to keep it in a common area in the home where people will be at that given time. In the summer, the cart could be moved to a patio, and if you’re not entertaining, the cart is always useful for other items, including toiletries, decor and even books. “It’s a tool, sometimes it’s necessary, sometimes it adds something to the room,” she said. “I don’t see them as a permanent place to hold anything. Bar carts are available in an array of styles so it depends on personal preference. The current trend seems to be two open shelves with simple

furnishing. While the function is more for practical purposes, appearance and aesthetic are important as well. In terms of style, Adler explained that metallic finishes are the way to go. “You don’t want it to look heavy,” she said. “You want it to be light and not a focal point, nothing that’s too noticeable. It’s more of a tool for other things.” Adler recommends the use of bar carts in traditional homes rather than modern designs. The extra furniture can make the home feel cluttered and she says they are less commonly used because homes have less furniture. “It can be good for a small

dining room if you want to have a formal dinner and there’s no room on the table for all the liquor and the wine,” Adler said. “Whatever it is, it’s nice to set it aside and people can get up and take some and come back to the table. “It is also a nice

5B

transitional piece for bringing stuff out from the kitchen and having a place to put things temporarily before it goes to the table.” If using the bar cart for drinking purposes specifically, it is important to have the proper tools at hand. Make sure there is a variety of alcohols, juices/ mixers and non-alcoholic options as well for those not partaking in alcohol consumption. Also, put out ice and glasses in preparation for guests. The bar cart is the perfect little place to store those dinner party essentials.

Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams www.mgbwhome.com $2,207 “Art Deco-inspired bar cart pairs shimmering metal with chic acrylic. Design features built-in handles and a mirrored top and shelf for added glamour. A slim rail along the bottom shelf prevents roll-offs and offers a pretty, yet practical touch. Visually light and well-sized for compact quarters. Offered in polished stainless steel or a warm brass finish.”

Porthole Bar

Restoration Hardware www.restorationhardware.com $3,295 “Modeled on a 1920s industrial iron sphere, the Porthole Bar evokes cocktail hour on the high seas. Set atop a pipework base, its dramatic glass door is edged in metal with exposed rivets and features a mirrored interior.”

Kehlani 2 Shelf Bar Cart

Great Spaces

Interior designer Robyn Baumgarten wows with splash of color BY CYNDI ZAWESKI

When it comes to high design, Robyn Baumgarten of Interiors by Just Design believes less is more. For nearly two decades, her Woodbury-based firm has been offering full-service, soup to nuts decor transformations, from complete renovations and new construction, to customized interior design and millwork.

M

47 Glen Cove Road Greenvale, NY 11548 Tel: 516.625.1787 213893 S

ake one statement piece the jumping off point. “I believe in finding a focal point and letting it shine, while the other elements in the room serve to enhance that feature,” Baumgarten said. “Good space planning, pops of color, focal points and a design that lets your eye move seamlessly throughout the space is how I define successful design.” Such was the case for one of Baumgarten’s recently completed projects at the newly constructed Beechwood Country Pointe Plainview. The 1,975-square-foot condominium was a blank canvas that its owners charged Baumgarten with reimagining into a warm and welcoming home. “The homes at Country Pointe are all new construction; therefore, it was a blank slate,” she explained. The main focus was bestowing a classic and timeless aesthetic in the open concept living and dining rooms. “All of the rooms are open to each other as one great living space,” Baumgarten explained. “As part of any space that I design, I painstakingly ensured that all design elements coordinate and work together throughout the entire home.” The living room area rug with calming blue tones informed the overall design plan. It was the first purchase for the project, and it would go on to inspire the totality of all its design elements. “Typically, I hone in on an element that the client loves and build a room around it,” she said. “In this case, that inspiration piece was the area rug.” Next, Baumgarten created several mood boards with different options. Like an astute tailor, she customized the design to fit her client’s aesthetic based on which pieces they were drawn to, allowing Baumgarten to highly curate the creative choices. “I work tirelessly to ensure that my clients receive the end result of what our shared vision is,” she said. “Often clients that seek out my services do so because my spaces are not overdone.” Baumgarten selected the flooring, cabinetry,

wall color and the finishes prior to her client moving in. A durable engineered floor in a dark wood finish was installed throughout the space to create cohesiveness among the rooms while dark cabinetry and the decidedly neutral wall color served to add contrast to the design. To invoke in a bright atmosphere, Baumgarten was resourceful with lighting. “Country Pointe is a condominium so the apartments are more like city dwelling; therefore, I relied on artificial lighting to create lighting interest,” she explained. Baumgarten continued to add warmth with the custom-designed dining room console, which sets the tone for the classic, timeless style and feel of the room. The matching, custom-designed dresser/server complimenting the dining room table added to the seamlessness of the design, with an unexpected and eye-grabbing detail. “They say ‘the devil is in the details.’ They were right,” Baumgarten said. “I had seen the dresser pulls from one of my sources that I purchase from. I ordered four pulls. When they came in, they were all different sizes, as they are a natural agate stone and are never going to be the same. I asked the manufacturer to send additional pulls so we could closely size them. It was a bit of a process, but well worth it.” Pops of blue inspired by the living room area rug were intermixed throughout the space to marry the design. For example, the blue hued statement artwork that hangs above the dining room dresser and the blue sofa in the living room. As a final touch, metallic and bright green accents were subtly incorporated for a pop that doesn’t overpower. “My client and I both agreed that a pop of lime green would add a touch of cheer and create interest for the eye in the space,” Baumgarten said. “These clients were an absolute delight and the project moved along seamlessly. We had a lot of fun and the design itself was unobscured by any unusual elements to overcome.” Interiors by Just Design is located at 217 Woodbury Rd., Suite 63, Woodbury.

Celebrating 30 Years of spring at Hicks Nurseries BY KAREN MUSGRAVE

GOLD COAST REAL ESTATE & LUXURY LIVING • BLVD • FEBRUARY 26 - MARCH 3, 2020 11B

It is that time of year when gardeners, eager to shake off the winter blues, set their sights on spring’s imminent arrival. In anticipation of warmer weather, tens of thousands of green thumbed enthusiasts will visit Hicks Nurseries for its annual Flower & Garden Show.

A

celebration of the sights and smells of spring, the annual showcase is marking its 30th anniversary in 2020. This year’s theme is Celebrations Around the World and planning for the event begins a year in advance Long Island’s largest garden center and a sixth-generation family business, the team at Hicks Nurseries first meets to discuss ideas, current trends and customer feedback from prior years. From this meeting an overall theme for the show is chosen. The gardens, props and walkways are then designed. Installation of the 16,000-squarefoot show begins in early February. Garden beds are built with stone pavers and filled with mulch. Props are put into place and then the planting begins. Plants are grown and forced to flower much earlier than they would normally flower in nature, which takes a lot of patience and science. Thus, attendees can expect to see gardens in full bloom which makes the Flower Show so special. Once the gardens are complete, the show is open for the public to enjoy for 18 days. During this time, the expert staff is watering, pruning and even replacing plants in the gardens as they come in and out of bloom. It is a wonderful time to visit the nursery and enjoy all the gardens have to offer. Throughout the last 30 years, the

show has focused on myriad garden styles from English country to Tuscan, tropical to aquatic, organic to recycled, whimsical and everything in between. The goal is to inspire individuals to bring what they experienced at the show into their own home garden. Long celebrated throughout the Netherlands, the Tulip Festival is synonymous with spring. Envision walking through fields of tulips among Dutch windmills and sense the renewal, growth and love that tulips signify. The Holi Festival is one of the most revered and celebrated festivals in India. It is the festival of color, sometimes referred to as the “festival of love”, signifying positivity, happiness, prosperity and friendship. Expect the Hicks’ Holi garden to be bursting with colorful flowers and magical lotus floating in pools of water. Mardi Gras is the last hurrah before the Lenten fast and no celebration is bigger or bolder than the Carnival of Brazil. Guests can join in on the parade, complete with a giant Macaw float and walk through a garden of agave and palms. Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, marks the end of the coldest days. BUILD

SMARTER Sweeten CEO shares tips for hiring a general contractor BY CYNDI ZAWESKI

Springtime is primetime for home renovations. Getting large-scale projects done right and in a timely fashion takes the skill of a trustworthy contractor, but finding one who shares your vision can be confusing. To take the guesswork out, Jean Brownhill, founder and CEO of Sweeten, has a checklist for hiring the right contractor. Based in New York City and founded by trained architects, Sweeten is a free renovation platform that matches homeowners with licensed general contractors and monitors projects to completion. Brownhill’s expertise simplifies the vetting process.

C

reate a “must-have” and “nice-to-have” list. The must-haves are what motivated the renovation to begin with: the dream of having a big kitchen island for the kids to do homework, for example. The “nice-to-haves” are items on your wish list if time and budget allows. “Having a clear vision of what will make this a successful renovation is the first step to finding the right professional for the project,” Brownhill said. Hire a licensed general contrac-

tor. The list of reasons is a long one, but it all comes down to protection. Home insurance might cover a few things, but when something goes wrong with a renovation, an average policy won’t cover everything. For example, if a bathtub is installed incorrectly and causes water damage, home insurance might cover damage, but won’t help fix the botched installation. With people working in your home, you are something of a pseudo employer. If any workers are injured while on the job in your

BEFORE residence, you could be vulnerable to a lawsuit. An unlicensed general contractor can be a serious liability, which is why Sweeten only works with licensed and insured general contractors. Get multiple bids for the project. You want to be a smart shopper. Brownhill recommends securing three estimates. But comparing bids apples-to-apples isn’t always easy because there is no industry standard for what a bid ought to look like so you are likely to have received esti-

AFTER

mates that look drastically different from each other. To streamline the process, Sweeten has an in-house team that can provide personal support in breaking down and comparing bids. Find the right fit. “The contractor you choose will be your partner—and be in your home— for months,” Brownhill said. “Make sure you have a similar communication style and that there’s good chemistry personality-wise.” Among the questions to ask is if a contractor has done work similar to yours,

and in your area. Ask for quality references and photos of past work, too. Check references of the contractor’s most recent jobs. Not the favorite clients they want to give you to call, the last three projects they did. “It’s amazing how many people ask for references and then don’t call them,” Brownhill said. “A collaboration with a talented general contractor is the best way to achieve your vision.” Visit sweeten.com for more tips, tricks and help for finding your perfect contractor.

THEATER

ANY WAY THE WIND BLOWS

Hadestown actresses share their approach to playing The Fates BY KIMBERLY DIJKSTRA

I

n Hadestown, two ancient love stories, brought to life by singer-songwriter and actual goddess Anaïs Mitchell, are intertwined and presented as one long song. It’s an old song, and it’s a sad song, but it’s a good song.

Conceived as a DIY theater project in Vermont in 2006, followed by a concept album in 2010, Hadestown has woven its way around the globe and into the hearts of many, becoming more refined with each production, ultimately landing on the Broadway stage in April to a very positive reception. The Greek myths populated by mortals and immortals—Orpheus, Eurydice, Hades, Persephone and Hermes—have been reimagined for modern audiences and given a breathtakingly beautiful, rich score. Jewelle Blackman, Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer (Grease: Live) and Kay Trinidad (The Little Mermaid) play The Fates, goddesses who weave the tapestry of life and dictate the destinies of humans and gods. Together, they produce stunning harmonies. “We each decided which fates we were,” said Blackman, who made her Broadway debut in Hadestown. “Whether we were the fate of death, the fate of allotting time or the fate that creates the thread of life.” They each naturally gravitated to a fate. “I chose death, and when you think of death, you often think low, you think deep,” said Blackman, who sings the lowest part, while Nacer sings the highest part and Trinidad sings the middle part. “It’s really interesting that the arrangement Anaïs wrote, in terms of the Fates,… is a spectrum of voices, from soprano to the lowest female voice possible.” “Our voices are all so different, but together they blend so well,” said Nacer. “There is a lot of diversity and representation in our cast and vocally is no exception.” Anaïs Mitchell plays with high and low tones throughout the folk opera, using voices as metaphor. Patrick Page (Hades) has a voice that Reeve Carney (Orpheus) once described as “from the depths of hell,” and director Rachel Chavkin has called a “freak of nature,” in the nicest way possible. The king of the underworld growls entire songs with a sound not heard anywhere else. Conversely, Orpheus often sings in a high register, lending a heavenly quality to his character, the legendary musician who happens to be the son of a Muse. Amber Gray (Persephone) and Eva Noblezada (Eurydice) give Mitchell credit for writing music that fits comfortably within their vocal ranges. Both women are sensational in the mythic roles. Noblezada gives a voice to a character who traditionally had none and Gray stands out in her chartreuse dress as the goddess of spring and life of the party. “Hadestown takes place in an unstated post-apocalyptic time period,” Trinidad explained. The setting feels like New Orleans though and features a jazz band on stage. “That’s what’s so special about Hadestown and what helps make it so relevant to our cur-

rent political climate, by not having it strapped into one particular locale or time period,” added Blackman. The musical has political undertones, due in part to “Why We Build the Wall,” a powerful protest song that closes out the first act. Only those who lack imagination conclude it’s about contemporary American politics, despite being written 13 years ago. The haunting lyrics use a perfect circular logic that, like many of Mitchell’s other folk songs, sound like they could have been written hundreds of years ago and apply to any time period. Universal themes inhabit every song in Hadestown, running the gamut genre-wise—with influences of jazz, blues, soul, folk, rock and more. “In one word—epic,” said Trinidad. “It’s an amalgamation of styles and genres, which makes it different and so catchy and intriguing,” said Blackman. “It’s joyful for the listener because it doesn’t draw on one type of

musical genre and it doesn’t try to live in one particular space. It’s everywhere.” The Fates are introduced by Hermes, played by the divine André De Shields, and through the song “Any Way the Wind Blows” at the beginning, where they establish their role as a force to be reckoned with, like a strong wind. “Within Greek mythology and in this story, we know what’s going to happen already. Your future is already destined by us,” said Trinidad. “Although it may seem like we are Hades’ minions, we are definitely in control.” “In this interpretation, we sometimes take on the role of the wind and push people one way or another, literally and figuratively, so they can fulfill their predetermined fate,” said Nacer. Blackman added that the Fates also represent the voices in our heads that we all struggle with. Largely present, Blackman, Nacer and Trinidad drift around the stage, often in unison, while maintaining a measure of individuality.

“We are definitely a unit,” Trinidad said. “We’re sisters and we are all one and what we like to call the ‘hive mind’ together.” “I think naturally we each bring something different to the Fates,” said Blackman. “We were encouraged to draw upon those differences and let them shine through our movements and how we sing. At times when we have to sing in tight harmonies, it’s great because we find a way to become really cohesive and one mind.” It’s clear the production has paid immense attention to detail in creating the atmosphere through sets and costumes, right down to feathers on Hermes’ cuffs, a nod to his role as messenger to the gods, often depicted as wearing winged sandals. “Our costumes are elegant and timeless, yet purposefully tattered in places, communicating that we are goddesses, but we’ve also been around for a while,” Nacer said. “Michael Krass, our incredible costume designer, did such a beautiful job making our dresses a little different from each other, and our silk chiffon dresses move like the wind.” The three actresses have been involved in the show for varying amounts of time. Blackman, drawn in by the music and the prospect of working with Rachel Chavkin, performed in the Canadian production in 2017. Trinidad became aware of the show at that time and fell in love with the music. Nacer participated in several workshops of Hadestown over the years before being cast in the Broadway production. Hadestown is one of only a handful of women-led creative teams in Broadway history. Director Chavkin has a lot of street cred among the New York theater community, most recently having directed Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, while composer Mitchell is a newcomer to the Broadway scene. Mitchell, however, has been recognized for years as a prodigious talent in the world of new American folk music. “It’s a beautiful room,” said Blackman. “There were no egos involved. There was a lot of collaboration and they were open to things that worked for you, and you were allowed to give input about what felt good, vocally or stylistically.” Nacer said she couldn’t be more inspired. “[Rachel] is so rad, such a visionary and just an incredible badass director. She really knows how to get things done and creates an environment where everyone wants to bring their best to the table every day,” she said. What do the actresses want audiences to take away from the show? “It’s human to have doubt,” said Blackman. “It doesn’t mean you still shouldn’t try and persevere.” “I want people to walk away with a feeling of hope,” said Nacer. “That although it might seem futile at times, even a single person or a single song has the power to change the world.” Winner of eight Tony awards and with an incredible cast, this musical is like no other. See Hadestown at the Walter Kerr Theatre, 219 W 48th St., NYC. For tickets, visit hadestown.com or call 877-250-2929.

BIG EASY EXCELLENCE

Mineola’s Biscuits and Barbeque corners Cajun cuisine BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO

ooks can be deceiving. If you happen to be motoring or walking by Biscuits and Barbeque (106 E. 2nd St.), the site of a vintage diner with its shiny siding and burgundy awnings in an industrial section of Mineola might make you think it’s just another greasy spoon where you can grab a tuna melt or cheeseburger deluxe. But once you enter the door and are greeted by the wafting scent of smoked meat, brilliant strings of colored lights adorning the trim behind the counter and sounds of squeeze-box driven zydeco music, it’s clear that you’ve entered a wonderland of bayou and barbecue cuisine. Celebrating its eighth year, B&B has made a name for itself as a go-to gem of an eatery that brings the savory flavors of the Big Easy to diners looking to tuck into gumbo, assorted po’ boys or Delta jambalaya. It’s a point of pride for owner Joan Gallo, who feels the diversity found within the culture and history of New Orleans is not only reflected in this comfort food, but gives it such broad appeal. “Louisiana food is so good because there’s no ethnic group that’s left out. TIME TO PLUG IN Electric car manufacturers seek expansion in the new decade BY JOSEPH WOLKIN

G

Meet the electric car, which is seeking a major expansion in the new decade. The electric cars, comprised of revolutionary technology, can last anywhere from 100 to almost 400 miles on the road. While the electric car is nowhere close to overtaking the traditional gas-powered machines, there are plenty of benefits for those who want to feel environmentally-friendly. But at the same time, consumers need to understand that these vehicles are far from perfect. “The market share of electric

vehicles on Long Island is .068 is the latest number I looked at in the beginning of December,” Rosemary Mascali, chair of Drive Electric Long Island’s education and outreach subcommittee, told Anton Media Group. “It’s still not a large adoption, but there’s reasons for it. For years, there weren’t a lot of models, there was a big price differential and there weren’t a lot of incentives.” Electric cars are complex, and organizations like Drive Electric Long Island, which is run by the United States Green Building

Council, aim to have consumers understand how they work. Unlike plug-in hybrids, which have a split electric motor and a regular gasoline-based one, electric cars run solely on a battery. The lithium-ion batteries are expensive, which drives the overall cost up. The cars, though, can now be charged at home. It will take several hours, preferably overnight, to fully charge and it add to your electric bill. There is no need to purchase a high-voltage charger. “Owners can use a standard

outlet, which takes a while, or install a wall charger for a much quicker charge,” a July 2019 study by Consumer Reports stated. “All electric vehicles come with a 110-volt-compatible, or Level 1, home connector kit. It’s essentially a fancy extension cord that allows your car to be plugged into a standard outlet on one end and into the car on the other end.” But these cars are not meant for long trips. This is for the daily commuter, going to and from work, plus maybe a little

extra driving. The battery life of these cars means that they’re perfect for those who drive about 100 miles per day, with some leeway depending on the car’s capability. A Tesla Model S can last for 373 miles without having to be recharged, while the Ford Focus Electric will need some extra juice after 115 miles. Audi’s first electric SUV, called the e-tron, lasts about 250 miles and can be recharged in an astonishing time of just a half-hour. “Every electric car that goes on the road today is going to

get greener over time,” Mascali said. “Ford seems to be picking up the pace.” Within the next decade, manufacturers, led by Tesla’s innovation, will not only last longer, but they’ll be the optimal choice for consumers. “If you’re one that drives 20 to 30 miles a day, the plug-in cars are pretty attractive,” she explained. “The hybrids can kick into gas if you need it.” A study conducted by

TOP 5 ELECTRIC CARS OF THE NEW DECADE BY JOSEPH WOLKIN

The new decade has arrived, and it’s the perfect time to go green with a brand-new electric car. While the upfront cost of an electric car is more than a traditional model, the amount of money consumers spend following the purchase of such a vehicle is significantly less given they will not have to visit the pump every week. But what cars are a must-purchase for the start of the new decade? Tesla Model S

This Tesla might as well be a racecar. It has 518 horsepower, looks sleet and it is indeed fast. By looking at it, you’d never guess this Tesla is an all-electric vehicle. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 2.4 seconds, and its battery lasts up to 373 miles. This sporty Tesla also comes with all-wheel drive, making it perfect for icy conditions throughout the winter. Price: Starts at $75,000

Ford Mustang Mach-E

Imagine a Ford Mustang, but larger and electric. That’s literally what this stallion is. Not only is the Mustang turning into a SUV, but it’s going to be one of the fastest electric vehicles as soon as it hits the road. The all-new Mustang, which will debut later this year, will have 459 horsepower under the hood, which will last for about 270 miles. The (Photo courtesy of Ford) GT version of the Mach-E will be available within the year, and this one will feature an actual grille, whereas the standard model won’t have one so it can focus on performance-oriented consumers. Price: Starts at $44,995

ELECTRIC CARS from page 6C Bloomberg New Energy Finance states that by 2040, electric cars might be out-selling the traditional internal combustion vehicles, with sales nearing 50 million cars. However, this is a major challenge that is befalling this industry. “There are already 630,000 public charging points installed globally, and utilities, oil and gas companies, automakers and pure-play operators are currently all active in this area,” the Bloomberg New Energy Finance report states. “But much more will be needed to serve the growing EV fleet.” Some companies, as Mascali pointed out, are even adding electric vehicle charging stations for their employees. Among them are local companies on Long Island, as well as universities in the area, making it easier and cheaper for people to charge their cars. That’s not all, either. New York’s Clean Pass program actually enables drivers of electric vehicles to hop onto the HOV lane and avoid traffic. Yeah, it’s perfect for commuters who frequently travel on the Long Island Expressway. In 2020, New York added the following vehicles to the HOV lane access list: • 2020 Ford Fusion Energi PHEV • 2020 Ford Fusion Special Service PHEV • 2020 Honda Insight and Insight Touring HEV • 2020 Jaguar I-Pace BEV • 2020 Kia Soul BEV • 2020 Toyota Corolla HEV • 2020 Toyota Prius Prime PHEV • 2020 Toyota Prius AWD HEV Overall, there are approximately 80 types of vehicles that are eligible for Clean Pass stickers, according to the New York State Department of Transportation. While the cost of electric cars are indeed expensive, there is hope for the future. Battery prices, as the technology increases, are expected to decline. That would mean the cars are more

affordable. Eventually, electric-based vehicles will take a toll on the oil industry. “Despite the rapid uptake of electric vehicles across many different vehicle segments, direct CO2 emissions from road transport continue rising for the next 10 years before peaking in 2030, mainly due to a growing internal combustion vehicle fleet,” the Bloomberg New Energy Finance report states. The price differential, thanks to the cheaper batteries, will greatly help consumers who want to move away from the standard gas-powered vehicles. “The cost of the battery is steadily coming down,” Mascali said. Additionally, the government if offering ways to assist consumers in purchasing the green machines. “The federal government and a number of states offer financial incentives, including tax credits, for lowering the up-front costs of plug-in electric vehicles,” the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy states on its website. “The federal Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax credit is for $2,500 to $7,500 per new EV purchased for use in the U.S.” The upfront cost of an electric car is immaculate, with the lowest being the Nissan Leaf, with a MSRP of $29,990. The inconvenience of charging your car each night might be bothersome at first, too. However, you will save a significant amount of money by using electricity in your home, rather than frequenting a gas station each week to fill up your tank. “The government policy will make a difference,” Mascali said. The benefits are certainly visible for the electric cars, but it costs a lofty price. In the future, the price will likely decrease significantly, a great sign for the industry and one step closer to making the world we live on a safer and healthier place to life.

Jaguar I-PACE

This is the car everyone has been waiting for. Jaguar went all out, putting every piece of ingenuity they could into the I-PACE, and it paid off. The electric SUV has been a hit since it hit dealerships across the nation. It feature a driving range of 234 miles and fast-charging capabilities. The I-PACE comes with several driver (Photo courtesy of Jaguar) assists, making the driving experience incredibly interactive. Though it’s an electric vehicle, it maintains 394 horsepower, making it the optimum eco-friendly choice to put into your garage. Price: Starts at $69,850

BMW i3

This is quite the expensive electric ride considering it only lasts for 153 miles. However, it includes all of BMW’s advanced technology, making it a mustbuy. This sedan has a gorgeous metallic look to it, featuring a beautiful accent on the side skirts. The BMW machine looks futuristic, and it isn’t too large, which means it’s perfect for parallel parking. Price: Starts at $44,450

Porsche Taycan

This is not a toy. This is the real deal. Porsche just entered the future thanks to creation of the Taycan. It still features the same, gorgeous look of a Porsche. But this one is all-electric, and it lasts for about 200 miles for one charge. The Porsche goes from 0 to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds, and it tops out at 160 mph. Get ready to fly out east with the turbo option, too. Price: Starts at $103,800
