Work simply doesn't feel like work when you get to do the things you love most. -Maggie Keats

“For me, practicing real estate gives me a daily excuse to do what I love: surround myself with an ever-evolving cast of wonderful people; get a voyeur’s view of fabulous interiors; tiptoe through exquisite gardens; see some really terrific architecture, art and design up close and personal. Combine that with creating marketing strategies, negotiating and matching people with properties and I can’t help but feel very lucky to have the best job in the world!”

ast year, I made the decision to bring back Boulevard magazine after a five-year hiatus. The first time around, we had a 12-year-run during which time readers were treated to a rich cross-section of features centering on celebrity interviews, intriguing people and stellar photo spreads that focused on charities. Our October relaunch issue was warmly received and here we are with a follow-up February issue that continues to hit on so many different topics. Dave Gil de Rubio and Jennifer Fauci give plenty for live theater lovers to check out, whether it’s our cover story on Chazz Palminteri and his musical interpretation of A Bronx Tale that’s just hit Broadway or Jennifer’s look at Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, a tribute to legendary singer-songwriter Carole King that’s been a long-running hit on the Great White Way. And for fans of classic Hollywood, Dave gives some insight into the Off-Broadway smash Cagney. Jennifer also takes readers to a few places off the beaten path including the historic Explorer’s Club and the exotic tropical charms of St. Lucia. Culinary appetites get served via Steve Mosco’s chat with respected chef and restaurateur Geoffrey Zakarian, Christy Hinko’s look at high-end kitchens that cook and Steve’s sizzling take on hot peppers. We also give a nod to the worlds of art (Dave’s walk through the Rolling Stones Exhibitionism), television (Jennifer highlights TV Land’s Teachers) and humanitarian endeavors (Christy’s overview of PRAI Cosmetic pro-animal efforts). As always, we’ve included a number of photo spreads that include images from the 62nd International Débutante Ball, the De La Salle School luncheon benefit featuring special guest and former NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly and Dancing With Our Stars Gala that raised money for the North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center. There are a lot of different things going on in this issue and I think there’s something for every reader. It all makes us look forward to the spring and another issue in May that much more. uys and Dolls may have been the first time anyone saw wise guy exploits brought to the Great White Way, but with A Bronx Tale, creator Chazz Palminteri has a chance to continue that tradition inspired by Damon Runyon and brought to life by Frank Loesser. Palminteri’s creation started out as a late 1980s autobiographical one-man show whose buzz attracted Robert DeNiro, who teamed up with Palminteri to release the 1993 film of the same name. DeNiro made his directorial debut and starred as the main character’s father while Palminteri played the lead of Sonny LoSpecchio in addition to writing the screenplay. A Bronx Tale’s most recent permutation is as a musical that came to fruition thanks to the involvement of show producer and ex-record company president Tommy Mottola, book by Palminteri, stage direction by DeNiro and Jerry Zaks, music by storied composer Alan Menken and lyrics by up-and-comer Glenn Slater. Currently running at Broadway’s Longacre Theatre, this latest version of Palminteri’s show is a creative destination he always envisioned arriving at. “We always thought about it, but it always takes that one person to really make something happen. I was always so busy with other projects and DeNiro was busy. But Bob and I talked about it for a long time and tried to get a couple of people and it wasn’t right. But then Tommy Mottola came over to me and said this was would be a great musical

On Broadway and that we had to do it. I said, ‘I know Tom we’ve been trying,’” Palminteri recalls. “I have to tell you, he put that thing on his back and made it happen. We went out and got Alan Menken. He read the book and loved it. But you have to be willing to take money out of your pocket. That’s the way you do it. Put your money where your mouth is—that’s what they say.” The critical and commercial response has been overwhelmingly positive, largely due to the complexity of emotions and relationships at the heart of this trip down memory lane. Family, racial tension, coming of age and parsing out the differences between good and evil crop up in this story centered on a young Italian teen growing up in the Bronx and getting befriended by a ruthless mobster, much to the consternation of the boy’s father. It’s a heartfelt story Palminteri wound up writing out of financial necessity when he was hustling as a struggling actor and a part-

time bouncer trying to make ends meet. “I wrote it back then because I ran out of money. I wasn’t going to waste my talent and I knew I had to do something that would get me noticed, so I wrote a one-man show,” Palminteri says. “I went to Thrifty Drug Store, got five yellow legal pads and then I had to figure out what the hell I was going to write about. So I wrote about that killing

[I witnessed when I was a kid], because it always stayed in my head, and the relationship I had with the wise guys and my dad. I started out by writing the five-minute monologue of the killing and I did that for my theater workshop and they just freaked out. Each week I would write and on Mondays I would perform another piece. At the end of 10 months to a year, I’d read 90 minutes of a one-man show. I did it and boom—my life exploded.” In the two decades plus since the celluloid version of A Bronx Tale made Palminteri a household name, he’s established himself as an in-demand film and television actor and even managed to bring his one-man show to Broadway for a 2007-08 Broadway run. A creatively restless sort, the die hard Yankees fan has also become partners in Chazz Palminteri Ristorante Italiano, which is on East 48th Street and Second Avenue and is being run by Jack and Jeff Sinanaj of Empire Steak House Fame. Palminteri is a frequent presence whose favorite dishes are A Bronx Tale (black linguine with brandy sauce, clams, shrimp and lobster and osso bucco (“the best in the city—anywhere”). “The restaurant is phenomenal. We have a house in Italy and I’ve been going to Italy all my life. My wife and I had all these recipes and then we met with this chef named Chef Anko and he’s a brilliant chef—he just did a spin on all this stuff and people just love it,” Palminteri points out. “Because our partners have three of the best steakhouses in the city, we have the best steaks and chops. So not only are we a great Italian restaurant, we’re a great steak restaurant. The proof is in the pudding. We’re packed all the time.” As for this gangster-driven one-man show becoming a musical, it all makes perfect sense to Palminteri, the son of an aspiring saxophonist and someone who got his start BOULEVARD 11

singing in a show band influenced by the likes of Johnny Mathis, Ray Charles and Frank Sinatra. With Menken and Slater being added to A Bronx Tale’s existing creative team that includes DeNiro and Zaks, Palminteri is excited and proud about the feedback he’s been getting. “I was the one who said that I wanted Alan Menken because I always thought that A Bronx Tale was a great fable and Alan did so many animated fables. His music is romantic, pretty and wonderful and I thought he would be a great guy to do it. Glenn Slater was the lyricist—I just think he’s one of the great lyricists coming up today. He’s young, smart and

just wonderful,” Palminteri says. “The amazing thing is the reaction people have when they see it. People cry at the end. It’s very emotional to them. Alfred Hitchcock used to say that there are only three things you can do to an audience and if you do two out of three, you’re doing really good. You can make them laugh, cry or scare them and in A Bronx Tale we do all three. You just hope you can write something like that and the reaction we’ve been getting is just incredible. They stand at the end, laugh and cry. Knock on wood, the show has got great advance sales and people are just buying it up.”

1620s table from the Prince of Portugal; one of only twelve 1727 bishop’s chairs to leave Westminster Abbey; a hatch from The Explorer, one of only seven ships to survive the sinking in Pearl Harbor; and Theodore Roosevelt’s personal family slides. These items only scratch the surface of the massive historical collection that lies beyond the wrought iron gates of the Explorer’s Club. Founded in New York City in 1904, the Explorer’s Club promotes the exploration of land, sea, air and space. Located at 46 East 70th Street in what was the private residence of the Clark family, the club supports scientific research and education that form a sound history of exploration. Theodore Janulis is the club’s current president, but executive director and member Will Roseman knows just about every secret within the walls. “The building represents a lot of what we do and who we are,” says Roseman, adding that the Clarks were the founders of Singer sewing machine and sold the building in 1965. “The artifacts in the building are entwined in the club’s actual history, which

includes one of the greatest art collections in the world. The Clarks incorporated a lot of international effects such as wood paneling from 1580s England, a chair from the Dowager Empress of China and the very first photographs ever taken in the arctic.” The Explorer’s Club is an international organization and an offshoot of the original Arctic Club, which began in the 1870s. Now including 3,300 members throughout the world and more than 30 national and international chapters, the Manhattan headquarters serves as home base and is open to the public on a daily basis. People can view the exhibits and attend Monday night lectures, which have run uninterrupted since 1932. “We’re about documenting history, accom-

plishment and achievement. You really have to do some form of exploration to be a member here,” says Roseman. “You can’t just be a traveler or have interest in exploration. We strictly define exploration without science and knowledge as adventure and adventure for us is sport.” An overwhelming number of members are conservationists and environmentalists, including many from the fields of aeronautics, anthropology, archaeology, astronomy, ecology, oceanography, paleontology, physics and zoology. Explorer Bob Hemm has been on more than 30 flag expeditions, including sky diving, mountain climbing and cave diving. Among his many accolades, Hemm is a documentary filmmaker, author, pilot,

deep-water diver and skydiver. “I have a degree in business and three years of industrial engineering,” says Hemm, who has been a member for 25 years. “I have traveled to Easter Island, Switzerland and Morocco, to name a few places.” Hemm was the expedition leader for Magellan’s Lost Fleet, a History Channel production that centered on Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan’s ship the Santiago, which was wrecked off the Patagonian coast in 1521. Proud of its explorers, both past and present, the club displays a plaque in the lobby showing that Explorer’s Club members were first to the North and South Pole, The summit of Mount Everest, the first to the

Marianas Trench and the first to the surface of the moon. An open space has been left for the first person to walk on Mars. There are two levels to the club: members and fellows, the latter of whom has been published. Those interested in becoming a member must fill out an application and include two letters of sponsorship from current members or fellows and a documentation of participation in field expeditions sponsored by a recognized scientific organization. Preparing for an expedition is also a process, one which can take anywhere from eight months to five years of planning. As for research, the club has more than 14,000 books throughout the building, some dating back to the Crusades. > BOULEVARD 17

“The explorers choose where they travel to and we provide support where we can. Research is critical in writing an objective and raising money for your exploration,” says Roseman, noting that many explorers come from an educational background and don’t have a surplus of money to spend. “Great science is found on a shoe string, oftentimes at little expense.” Roseman was a bush pilot in the Congo, which is how he earned his membership. He has an impressive display of signed miniature flags in his office from the likes of John Glenn, Stephen Hawking, Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong, who have left their mark upon visiting the club. If the club’s history, wall hangings and stories of past members seem to be predominantly male in nature, that’s because women were not allowed in until 1981. Marine biologists Sylvia Earle and Rita Matthews, zoologist Dian Fossey, geologist and a former NASA astronaut Kathryn Sullivan and Anna Roosevelt are some of the women who proudly earned their spots. The Explorer’s Club flag is the hallmark of every expedition and carrying a flag is considered not only an honor, but a privilege. Red represents bravery, white is purity and 18 BOULEVARD

blue symbolizes fidelity. There are currently 202 flags, each with their own story. “We’ve had expeditions where we’ve gone to retrieve flags that were lost,” says Roseman, noting that members go on about 600 expeditions per year, but only 50 or 60 qualify to carry an explorer’s club flag.

“Teamwork and relying on your companions really transcends what we do and the club is a fascinating place; it’s a great secret.” Steeped in rich history, the Explorer’s Club is about preserving the past and making a mark on the future, a ceremonial tradition that will continue for years to come.

hef and restaurateur Geoffrey Zakarian’s career has whisked him off to locales like Paris and London, landed him in gastronomical mecca New York City and brought him into the TVs of kitchens across the country. And that is merely the tasting menu version of this seasoned chef’s story. Born in Worcester, MA, to Armenian and Polish parents, Zakarian currently operates no less than eight restaurant concepts, is a familiar foodie face on a handful of shows on The Food Network and also develops the kitchen storage line, Pro For Home, and stages a unique studio space for food in Manhattan. All the while, Zakarian maintains the art of cooking as his first love. “I just cook from my heart,” Zakarian says. “Though I learned classical French technique, I apply it with American sensibility and American products.” New restaurants on the horizon include two new ventures in Los Angeles, Georgie and Garden Bar; two in Hollywood, FL, Point Royal and Counter Point; as well as successful restaurants The National, The Lambs Club and The National Bar & Dining Rooms and The Water Club. At Georgie and Garden Bar, both within the Montage Beverly Hills, the chef strives for technique-driven preparations. “There are great cocktails and reimagined classics,” he says. “I particularly love the mixed hummus selection, the Mezze Trio and the Lobster Roll. Also, the tableside Martini Cart is truly special.” Eaters who haven’t dined at one of Zakarian’s spots recognize him from The Food Network. He is a judge on the network’s top-rated show, Chopped, hosts Cooks vs. Cons and co-hosts The Kitchen along with culinary favorites Sunny Anderson, Katie Lee, Jeff Mauro and Marcela Valladolid.

His newest program, Cooks vs. Cons, sees home cooks battle with trained professionals, whose true identities are concealed, for a panel of judges. “Most of them fool us, to be honest,” he says. “But there was one who was a garbage collector that really threw us for a loop.” With his project, The Food Studio, Zakarian created a space to host custom events, while also accommodating film and photo shoots in an open kitchen in Manhattan. “We have a unique space and we try to use it educationally, for teaching demos as well as for research,” he says. In restaurants and on television, Zakarian

displays his craft—which is based upon a love of satiating family, friends and guests. “I love anything family style and I only cook in large format. It’s more fun and less fuss and my guests love it,” he says, adding his must-have kitchen ingredients include extra virgin olive oil, five pepper blend, red wine vinegar, sea salt and kosher salt. As for up-and-coming chefs, Zakarian warns not to set sights on celebrity chef status too early—instead, focus on fundamentals and success will come in time. “Arrive one hour early. Depart one hour late,” he says. “Work harder than anyone else. Period.”

FOOD FOCUS

Hot

Flair T

By Steve Mosco

here are dozens of varieties of peppers spicing up bland food across the globe—and with insane chili heads breeding strains, there are dozens more on the horizon. Peppers pump up flavor profiles with degrees of heat from subtle to atomic— some add moisture and color to a dish, while others add fruity, fiery flavors and some evil variations boast a heat so intense, they merely inflict pain upon the eater’s body. But pain is not always a bad thing. Chili peppers like cayenne, jalapeño and habañero contain capsaicin, which not only is the compound that delivers heat, but could also help guard against heart disease, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Medical applications aside, peppers are meant to be eaten, enjoyed and survived. On the low end of the heat spectrum, bell peppers are the “peppers” in the omnipresent “sausage and peppers,” and also are perfect for stir fry. The Italian sweet pepper is similar and is frequently called the frying pepper, as it’s sautéed in oil and added to pasta, meats, pizza or salad.

26 BOULEVARD

The heat notches up with banana peppers, pepperoncini, pimento and Italian long hots. And chili heads’ excitement is elevated even more with poblano, Anaheim and the most popular pepper in the country, the jalapeño, which can be filled with cheese for poppers, pickled, fried or chopped raw for a fiery taco garnish. Beyond that, there be dragons. Serrano peppers, common in Mexican and Thai cooking, are only a couple of inches long, but pack an intense wallop. Cayenne peppers are often found in the kitchen cabinet mainstay, crushed red pepper, as well as the hot sauce favorite, Frank’s Red Hot. Ground cayenne is perhaps the most popular of the medicinal peppers, with cayenne pepper tea curing an array of ailments. In terms of pure heat, top honors among common peppers go to scotch bonnet and habañero peppers. Part of the same family, these peppers are ubiquitous on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula and in the Caribbean and are frequently used in the most blazingly hot condiments. For those who brave the heat, fruity flavors await.

The Scoville Scale Created in the early 1900s by pharmacist Wilbur Scoville, the Scoville scale measures the pungency of chili peppers by calculating the concentration of capsaicin, the compound that delivers chili pepper heat.

One Beautiful Musical ‘‘P

Chilina Kennedy and Jake Epstein take the stage as Carole King and Gerry Goffin in the smash hit musical By Jennifer Fauci

laying Carole King has been amazing…it’s been the role of a lifetime and I’m not just saying that…it’s fantastic. I love it,” is how Chilina Kennedy described what it has been like to play the iconic singer-songwriter. An hour and a half before showtime, Kennedy and Jake Epstein, who plays her onstage husband, gushed about Beautiful: The Carole King Musical in her dressing room. Above onstage, the crew was getting ready for the show’s umpteenth performance in its successful three-year run. “The first time I met Carole, she came

30 BOULEVARD

to see the show and she basically played piano for me because she has a really particular playing style,” says Kennedy, who is classically trained. “It was really interesting because I play and I’m very upright, but there’s a way she gets her whole body into it. I watched a ton of videos and tried to internalize that and make it my own.” The Canadian singer-songwriter and actress is a graduate of Sheridan College in Canada and the Birmingham Conservatory for classical theatre in Stratford, England. She succeeded Tony winner Jessie Mueller in March and received tips on how to play Carole from the singer herself. Not many Broadway stars

get that kind of tutelage. “She has been wonderfully open in talking with me about her life,” says Kennedy of King. “She always says to me ‘we’re nothing without our cast… we’re only where we are because of the people who are supporting us,’ and I love that about her.” Written by Douglas McGrath, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical tells the story of the life and career of King in her early years, using her songs, which were often co-written by Goffin, as well as songs by friends Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, which include “One Fine Day,” “Some Kind of Wonderful,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman”

and of course, “Beautiful.” Kennedy read an original script of the musical early on and saw the potential the early script had and that “the heart was there and all of the pieces to tell something really powerful.” “There was something about the character, I felt like I understood her. I got who that woman was and I wanted the chance to be able to dive into that,” she says. As for her Canadian counterpart, Jake Epstein was lucky enough to originate the role of Goffin, played it for a year, left and then came back and said his return feels deeper and more fulfilling this time around. The National Theatre School of Canada graduate had known of Kennedy, but never had the chance to work with her before. “It’s been a wonderful, challenging and a life-changing role to play Gerry Goffin,” says Epstein of Goffin, who unfortunately

passed away while Epstein was playing the part. “Gerry saw the show twice, I believe, and near the end of his life he was going through a lot. The first time he saw the show I was incredibly nervous because everyone wanted me to meet him. He pulled me in and said, ‘You’re good.’ And that was enough. That meant the world to me.” Goffin came again on opening night and was so proud of the show, which was one of the things Epstein believes kept him alive for much longer. “He wanted his whole story, bare bones and all, to be told in a very honest way,” says Epstein. “Carole showed up to one of our first rehearsals and gave us the blessing to do the show. She asked who was playing Gerry and I raised my hand. She said ‘don’t make him the villain, he screwed up, but he’s not the villain,’ and I never forgot that.”

Epstein says that as a person, Goffin was a very complicated, troubled man, but “as an actor, you relish characters that have flaws,” “I’ve really enjoyed portraying the best parts of him and the worst parts of him as honestly as I can,” he says. “He’s very close to my heart.” As a lyricist, Epstein finds Goffin to be beyond brilliant, writing ahead of his time at such a young age. Goffin was 20 years old when he wrote the lyrics to “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” which Epstein feels is “a beautiful, complex and haunting song and the fact that he could understand a woman’s perspective on that song and with only a few words, I think he revolutionized music.” Epstein grew up in a household that played nothing but folk music. In high school, he fell in love with Carole King, James Taylor, Paul Simon, The Beatles and Woody Guthrie, sharing that the reason he wanted to audition was because he loved the music so much. “It was like a Renaissance of art at that time and I feel like music was leading the charge at the time and pushing the boundaries of what you’re allowed to say,” says

Epstein. “A singer-songwriter was a completely new thing and Beautiful is about a shift in writing music for other people to writing music for yourself and Carole was at the forefront of all that.” It has been widely said that King wrote the soundtrack to a generation, and both Kennedy and Epstein couldn’t agree more. “She sure did,” says Kennedy. “People

have a really deep connection to that time period and to that [Tapestry] album. Everybody has a story and can relate to one song or another. Our culture has changed a lot; people have less attachment to music.” “For a female empowerment story to be about friendship at its core is rare. It’s not just a love story,” adds Epstein. “Their love story is about friendship and conflict and there’s a lot of comedy in it, which people don’t expect. People come because they know the music but they love it because it hits a real note in people; they just fall in love with the friendships between the characters.” Both Epstein and Kennedy perform eight shows a week and it’s a new feeling every time they step on stage. “It’s fun to be reminded of the simplicity of the time period,” she says. “As an audience member, I love feeling like I’ve had an experience and that’s what I hope people take away.” “I hope people are thoroughly entertained because the show is moving, it’s funny, it’s got awesome nostalgic music and it’s a great story,” says Epstein. “I hope the audience laughs, cries and goes aha!”

Tough Guys Do Dance James Cagney gets his due in a smash Off Broadway musical By Dave Gil de Rubio

36 BOULEVARD

rguably one of the greatest song and dance men to come out of Hollywood, James Cagney left behind a legacy that included three Academy Award nods, one win, a Kennedy Center Honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and was considered by storied director Orson Welles to be, “...maybe the greatest actor to ever appear in front of a camera.” Thanks to the Off-Broadway musical Cagney, the late Oscar-winning thespian’s memory is being kept alive at Manhattan’s Westside Theatre. Credit lead and show co-creator Robert Creighton and theater producer Riki Kane Larimer for spearheading a monument to this Tinseltown legend via this production that bears his name. With a book written by Canadian writer Peter Colley, music and lyrics by Creighton and Christopher McGovern and direction by Bill Castelli-

no, Cagney seamlessly weaves songs from theater legend George M. Cohan and original material into a six-person production that makes great use of the intimate confines of the 270-seat Westside Theatre. Props are effortlessly swapped on and off the stage for settings ranging from Hollywood soundstages and the site of the 1977 Screen Actors Guild Awards to a Hell’s Kitchen apartment and the Keith Music Theatre on West 81st Street, all while telling the story of the iconoclastic title character. It’s the culmination of a dream that Creighton, who bears an uncanny resemblance to the late actor, first embraced as a mid-1990s, second-year acting student. “I was in acting school and a teacher said that I reminded him of Jimmy Cagney, between my energy and the fact that I like tap dancing. I’d just started tap dancing late—I was 20. [That observation started my fixation with] watching Cagney

films and becoming very obsessed with him on screen. As an acting student, I was really into my craft and I felt like he was really ahead of his time,” Creighton says. “There was never a false word out of his mouth and he was in these stylized films that always [rang] true. About a year out of acting school, I was already in this Cagney zone, learning about him and what an amazing guy he was and then [I found out] his estate was trying to do a play about his life.” For the next decade and a half, Creighton scrambled to realize this Cagney quest, while working his way up to Broadway, eventually landing roles in The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Chicago, Anything Goes, Chitty Chitty Bang Band and The Mystery of Edwin Drood. In meeting Colley and McGovern along the way, Creighton created an early version of Cagney that played down in Florida thanks to theater impresario Lynette Barkley. The show popped up on Larimer’s radar around this time and she was immediately smitten by the subject matter and presentation. “I’m having dinner with my friend Larry

Topel, who is a producer and a real curmudgeon. He doesn’t like anything and he hates everything. He said he saw something in Florida that was so great—singing and dancing with great music. A lot of it is original, but a lot of it is patriotic music in the shape of George M. Cohan,” Larimer recalls. “I went to rehearsal, met [director] Bill Castellino right

away. I knew before I saw it that I was going to love it, but then I loved it even more once I saw it. I met Bobby Creighton who to me, is such a charming and personable actor. Those little gestures and mannerisms, the twinkle in his eye—his whole style is just so fresh and so adorable. But it’s not just him—I fell in love with the whole cast.”

For Larimer, whose background is in advertising and has only been plunging this deeply into Broadway and Off-Broadway since the 2014 death of her husband, Robert, it’s been an invigorating and challenging experience. Despite being a major investor in Gigi and On the Town along with having stakes in Dear Evan Hansen and Pierre, Natasha and the Comet of 1812, Cagney is the first show where she’s been the lead producer. Early instincts about the show’s viability were vindicated via an earlier soldout five-week stand at the York Theatre at St. Peter’s Church that shattered the nonprofit theater’s box office record. While one of the largest challenges was securing the rights to the Cohan material, keeping 270 seats full for eight shows a week is an ever-present factor that she, Creighton and everyone involved with Cagney have been able to do. Larimer admits a highly effective digital marketing campaign and social media outreach have proven to be very successful, along with substantial word-of-mouth (“... the most important kind of advertising no matter how big your budget is”). So while the siren song of Broadway beckons, Larimer is

weighing her options. “I never realized how important the right venue is for a show. It has to be right economically and fit the feeling of whatever it is that you’re doing,” she explains. “If and when we take Cagney on the road [or to Broadway], I really would not allow this to play in a massive theater with 2,000 people. It’s too intimate a production.” For now, all-age audiences are making the pilgrimage to the Westside Theatre for this show about a tap-dancing tough guy who passed away three-plus decades ago. While the idea of a show centering on a Golden Age Silver Screen icon may seem odd in a time when most young people know Steve McQueen as the British director of 12 Years a Slave and not the late 1960s-70s American screen idol, Cagney’s appeal doesn’t surprise Creighton. “Everyone walks out happy, because they’re uplifted by the show. This is a guy who triumphed and even in this day and age, finishing ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy’ and that joyous celebration at the end becomes a very emotional experience for people,” he says. “I think anyone of any age that comes is entertained on that showbiz level.”

The cast of Teachers makes the grade for a punchy and thought-provoking second season By Jennifer Fauci

hat do you get when you have six people with the root name “Kate?” An improv group called The Katydids, of course. Caitlin Barlow, Katy Colloton, Cate Freedman, Kate Lambert, Katie O’Brien and Kathryn Renée Thomas, also known as “The Katydids,” star in TV Land’s hit new show Teachers, a comedy about six elementary school teachers who attempt to educate the youth of tomorrow, even though their own lives are a hot mess. “It honestly all started as a joke, because I thought there was something funny about girls named Kate,” says Barlow, who plays liberal teacher Cecilia Cannon. “We didn’t all know each other,

but after the first show, we discovered that we had amazing chemistry.” “There was an improv show at the theater we performed at called Radical Concept; we thought it would be a great concept,” says Freedman, who plays the fairly lazy teacher AJ Feldman. Originally a web series, Teachers was created by the group after director and friend Matt Miller mentioned that they all looked like educators. In January 2012, they started developing the characters and wrote short episodes. “We only got called secretary before and that we look like we work at Ann Taylor Loft,” says O’Brien, who plays Mary Louise Bennigan, a religious and conservative teacher who has somewhat

naive tendencies about her. “We had to take the initiative to market ourselves because we didn’t have the financial backing,” says Lambert, who plays the unlucky in love, yet competent teacher Caroline Watson. As a web series, The Katydids had very defined characters, so making the jump from several seconds to a half-hour television sitcom was a challenge, but something they were willing to take on. “For the web series, we had been focused on getting to the joke as fast as possible, so when we were given this amazing opportunity to do a show, we explored 22 minutes of learning about story structure and character structure,” says Colloton, who plays the extremely narcissistic

teacher Chelsea Snap. Thomas, who plays the angry and antisocial teacher Deb Adler, says that they had so much creative control throughout the process, which is one of the best parts of working with TV Land. “They allowed us to make the show our own and keep the voice of The Katydids and push it even further,” she says. Originally, the group thought of TV Land as a traditional channel and that Teachers would be a good fit, which inclined them to pull back from their voice. When the network said they wanted more, the cast was shocked. “Initially, we pictured meeting people, pitching the show and going to different networks, but we got incredibly lucky that the agent we worked with knew our executive, Brad Gardner, at TV Land and they were looking for something similar to what we had,” says Freedman. A hit with teachers and non-teachers alike, the comedy’s second season premiered on January 17. With 20 episodes scheduled as opposed to the first season’s 10 and guest stars like Matt Walsh and Haley Joel Osment, fans can expect a lot more risks when it

comes to topics. On the educational front, the women take on Common Core and low teacher pay, and on the topic of girl power, breastfeeding and slut-shaming are discussed. “One of the questions we asked this season was how do we want to move each character forward,” says Colloton, adding that her character Ms. Snap wants to become more involved in politics and women in power. Of the other teachers this season, Ms. Watson recovers from her breakup and tries to be more proactive while Ms. Bennigan matures and explores her love life. Mrs. Adler shows more of her personal life as viewers meet her husband while Ms. Feldman’s teaching style switches from pop culture to more concrete textbook lessons. As for Ms. Cannon, her role switches to art teacher as she navigates teaching with limited resources. “The common thread is that art teachers are generally disrespected in schools who favor STEM subjects,” says Barlow. Teachers is a very female-driven show, with the creators, writers, executive producers and directors being predominantly female. “It’s great for both men and women to see. For women, you can relate to these conver-

Lambert’s mother is a teacher, so there was a time when she considered teaching theater at the collegiate level. “I never thought I’d be a teacher, but I really admire them,” says Thomas, who actually taught an after school program for six years at a Chicago public high school. “I have so much admiration for people who are teachers,” says Colloton. “I’m horrible with discipline. I can’t even get my dog to respect me.” One of the unique aspects of the show is that the cast hears from real teachers about their experiences and stories. O’Brien says that really made her and the group respect teachers even more. “We want to pay tribute to them in some way because the show is about young women in their 20s who found themselves teaching, and how they get through their personal lives,” says O’Brien. “It’s a funny show that we love and are proud of and we hope someone else loves it, too.”

An Island Dreamscape With sophisticated beauty and local charm covering every inch of the Caribbean, editor Jennifer Fauci heads to St. Lucia for a refreshing course in relaxation.

T

urquoise waters, mineral springs, a lush rainforest and fishing villages that dot white sand volcanic beaches. Welcome to St. Lucia. What many have deemed “the new Hawaii,” the Eastern Caribbean island nation of St. Lucia has become a favorite destination for honeymooners and families alike. Known for its twin mountains or Pitons, the island is more than a vacation; it’s an experience. There are not many places on earth where tourists are so welcomed into the Creole culture by locals, who are ready to embrace visitors and display the pride they have for their island. As you prepare your trip, consider these must-see sights and activities that will make your time in St. Lucia unforgettable.

44 BOULEVARD

Sulphur Springs and Mudbaths

Saint Lucia has a history of offering restorative and rejuvenating treatments. At the hot mineral-rich springs of Soufrière’s volcano, visitors can soak away their aches and pains—and age—in the bathing pools at Sulphur Springs. With charcoal-colored purifying mud as the ultimate natural spa treatment, bathers take a dip in the hot springs, then coat themselves in gray mud and wait to dry in the sun. Many have said their skin looks brighter and feels smoother after just one trip. After a good cleanse, take a tour of the springs, which is the hottest and most active geothermal area on the island and only drive-in volcano in the world. Watch active geysers shoot out smoke and learn about sulfur’s magic powers.

St Lucia’s Caribbean oasis brims with rest and relaxation as well as history, exploration and a healthy dose of island activities.

Pitons

Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens Sugar Beach Viceroy Resort

St. Lucia’s Piton mountains are the most photographed landmark on the island, which is known for the two mountainous volcanic spires. Visitors can climb one or both of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed mountains with Gros Piton measuring 786 metres high and Petit Piton at 739 metres. The climb to the top takes a few hours, with several rest stops along the way. Locals take groups of climbers up the pitons with a history lesson along the way. When you reach the top, the view can’t be beat. On the way back down, climbers can buy a shirt that displays their victorious ascent, and enjoy ice cream and cold water to cool off. The Pitons are depicted everywhere on the island, and they are a natural beauty to behold.

If you wish to immerse yourself in nature, take a tour of Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens at Soufrière Estate, one of the oldest and best preserved estates of St. Lucia. The gardens, which encompass six acres of the property, were created in memory of the estate’s owners. Home to the picturesque Diamond Waterfall whose water flows straight from the Sulphur Springs, visitors will encounter dozens of birds, insects, colorful flowers and plant life. The mineral baths, which were restored by King Louis XVI of France, await explorers, who can relax their muscles before moving on to another adventure.

When booking a stay at St. Lucia, the island offers all-inclusive hotels, couples-only hotels, family-friendly and luxury hotels. If you want to treat yourself, there’s no better place to take it all in than at the Viceroy Resort of Sugar Beach. Set within more than 100 acres of the rainforest and on the site of an 18th-century sugar plantation, the luxurious resort is set steps away from the snow white sand of Sugar Beach. A relaxing day on the beach, snorkeling in the marina or floating at sea sets guests adrift among the pitons, which are in full view from anywhere on the property. Five-star dining, exquisite cottages and suites and a caring staff that goes above and beyond for all guests is what you can expect during your stay. BOULEVARD 45

Detour

The Queens native explores her country music side with her latest project By Dave Gil de Rubio >

BOULEVARD 49

MUSIC

W

For Cyndi Lauper’s 2016 country music album Detour, she covers Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton and Marty Robbins.

THE

hen Cyndi Lauper burst onto the music scene with her 1983 debut She’s So Unusual, everything about her image found Lauper living up to the album title from her quirky speaking voice and eccentric thrift store wardrobe to the fiercely independent mindset that showed itself in pop songs about feminist empowerment and female masturbation. So more than three decades later, it might seem a bit unusual for her to be seemingly conforming by delving into a project of country music material. But for the 63-yearold singer-songwriter with a four-octave vocal range, it wasn’t really a stretch, especially given the fact that she heard much of it as a kid either on her Aunt Gracie’s black and white transistor radio or while spending time with her Nana watching Patsy Cline sing on Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts television show. “I always wanted to sing a country record. I learned a lot about singing from listening to Patsy Cline, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, Johnny Burnette and all those rockabilly guys along with Wanda Jackson, who was the first

rocker,” Lauper explains. “When I met John Turi [of Blue Angel], he started playing me all these [early rock & rollers] people. At the time, this music I sang was right around when country and blues kind of walked hand-inhand. There were blues people writing and listening to country music and writing those kinds of stories.” Lauper’s interest in that time period found her exploring the blues side of the coin when she released 2010’s Grammy-nominated Memphis Blues, a collection of songs that found her duetting with the likes of B.B. King, Ann Peebles, Charlie Musselwhite and Allen Toussaint while digging into the canons of Little Walter, Albert King and Muddy Waters. It was with this in mind when Sire Records founder Seymour Stein approached Lauper about coming down to Nashville and record material predominantly drawn from that 1950s-1960s music era. With Stein providing a list of suggested songs and an introduction to storied Music Row producer Tony Brown, the 63-year-old singer-songwriter fell in love with the process and the locale

of her latest project, “I didn’t do all the songs on the list I wanted to do. Just like with the blues album, there are tons of blues songs I wanted to do along with tons of country songs,” she says. “I wouldn’t have sung ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’ or even ‘She Bop’ had I not listened to country singers like Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton. But Dolly is a different character. There’s something about her that you just love her and if you don’t, there’s really something wrong with you. It was a great honor to go down to Nashville and make music inside of Nashville. [Prior albums like] Sisters of Avalon and Shine were made outside of Nashville in Hendersonville. Then I actually got to work in Nashville proper. It’s a great place because there’s still a very strong music community and they’re very supportive of each other and of me. I love the fact that they still have honky-tonks and places where people can sing.” Having narrowed her selections down to classics recorded by iconic artists like Cline (“I Fall to Pieces”), Jackson (“Funnel of

Love”) and Marty Robbins (“Begging to You”), Lauper also wound up with an array of famous names helping out with the in-studio heavy lifting including Willie Nelson, Alison Krauss, Vince Gill, Jewel and Emmylou Harris. Highlights abound whether it’s Lauper and Jewel mastering the Texas swing of Patsy Montana’s seminal “I Want To Be a Cowboy’s Sweetheart,” complete with the latter’s robust yodeling or Harris lending some crystalline harmonies to the bouncy title cut. And while

Gill’s extraordinary guitar playing is all over Detour, he plays Conway Twitty to Lauper’s Loretta Lynn on a bouncy reading of “You’re the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly.” Equally notable are Nelson’s contributions to a laid-back version of his “Night Life.” As much a fan as she is a performer, Lauper was not surprisingly thrilled by who showed up to help her out in the studio. “I think all these country guys influenced me and I knew about Willie Nelson when I was in Blue Angel because he wrote ‘Crazy’ and I was very aware of Patsy Cline. I used to have a Patsy Cline button in 1980. I really loved her music, her sound and voice,” she says. “I was listening to [Willie’s] early work at that time because I knew about him. I met Emmy on another project and I still want to sing with her again. I wouldn’t mind being in a band with her. She’s just so great and I love Alison Krauss—I always have. I’m a big, huge fan of all these people. For me, it was a great experience to go down there and have all those people play on my record. It was extraordinary.”

Fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi debuts his line at Lord & Taylor By Dave Gil de Rubio

he world of fashion may be where Isaac Mizrahi hails from, but he’s managed to become a pop culture icon by crossing over into the worlds of film (Unzipped; Men In Black), television (Project Runway: All Stars; Ugly Betty) and even comics (Isaac Mizrahi Presents the Adventures of Sandee the Supermodel). But recently, Mizrahi debuted his exclusive IMNYC Lord & Taylor collection. While this kind of fashion in-store event is something the Brooklyn native has done countless times, it’s both enjoyable and a crucial element of the creative process. “I like meeting the end-user a lot. It’s my favorite part. I like the idea of communicating. It’s one thing if you have a shop and you do your best to make it look incredible on the floor. But suddenly, you’re in the room with the people listening to their comments and that effects things so much,” he says. “It completely informs my brand and shapes what I do. Without it, I would be nowhere.” That single-mindedness about fashion dates back to when Mizrahi boldly launched his own label, IS New York, when he was only 15 with the help of a family friend. “I was designing the clothes and had a partner who was doing the business side. It was so instinctual. I was just doing the clothes that I thought were pretty. I was daring to do things,” the Brooklyn native recalls. “It doesn’t matter how many ideas you have. Unless you can get something made well—for me

a concept is a concept. It has to represent something and then you have to get it made.” As for IMNYC, it’s a line Mizrahi is rightfully proud of given that quality is the gold standard he’s applying to these clothes and accessories designed for a demographic that skews to 30 or 35 year olds, but will certainly have the kind of panache that can appeal to women on either side of this spectrum. Some of the current fashion trends that have caught Mizrahi’s eye can also be found in this collection, be it plaid coats, longer skirts, head-to-toe velvet or chunk-heel boots all embraced by a simple approach and cut. Page 1 were a lot of things that we “There

could have done [with this line]. We could have done a dressy line or an evening line,” he explains. “But really, the clothes and accessories that we’ve created are for that woman who is urbane, works and has exposure to all these kinds of micro-trends. Busy clothes look very cheap to me. I think the quality of this collection is remarkably great and I think that’s something I would love to represent as one of the hallmarks of this line. The one major thing that sets us apart from other fast fashion brands is the thought that we try to trend as closely as possible and make clothes that fit right in. We do classic versions of these things that are very trendy.”

urated by New York native Ileen Gallagher, Exhibitionism, delivered by DHL, is an interactive homage to the self-described “World’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band” that features the full participation of band members Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood. Located in the Meatpacking District section of the West Village at Industria, this exhibition runs through March 12 and uses more than 500 rare items to tell the story of the Stones dating back to the group’s early 1960s origins. Attendees going through this multimedia experience will see an art installation recreation of the 1963 flat located in London’s Chelsea area shared by Jagger, Richards and founding member

Along with gear that includes Richards’ rosewood Fender Telecaster, a peek backstage and in the recording studio of a Stones our and recording session respectively, you’ll find Jagger’s lyric book with the handwritten words for “Miss You,” “Hey Negrita” and “Worried About You,” fanzine questionnaires filled out by the band and footage of the band playing with blues legend Muddy Waters at Chicago’s Checkerboard Lounge. Attendees can also play with remixing a handful of different songs like “Angie,” “Under Cover of the Night” and “Miss You,” watch a video collage of the band’s music video legacy and take in the various facets of the Stones’ storied tours over the years.

Kitchens That Cook

here are two rooms that we either typically show off when we have guests or are dying to check out when we visit someone’s home. One is the bathroom and the other is the kitchen. The curiosity about the bathroom is probably just because we’re nosy, but the kitchen is the heart of the home. “The kitchen is the heart of the home, and Sub-Zero and Wolf believe that quality time starts in the kitchen,” says Danielle Gruosso, marketing coordinator for Sub-Zero Group East. “It’s where conversation and traditions are handed down to future generations.” And now that we spend more time than ever in the kitchen, it’s important to upgrade and update accordingly. Today’s must-have,

gourmet kitchens feature impressive appliances, cabinetry and other amenities. “The best refrigeration, cooking appliances and dishwasher on the market are three must-haves for a high-end luxury kitchen; in addition to beautiful kitchen cabinets, well-made cabinets that are built to last and designs that suit the owner’s taste in style,” says Gruosso. So, who needs a luxury kitchen anyway? “Culinary impressives seek to create unique adventures and exceptional experiences, and have a passion for entertaining and sharing their knowledge with others— they select designs that make a bold statement and they want options that allow them to create bespoke kitchen designs,” says Beatriz Sandoval, director of brand marketing for Thermador. Most luxury kitchen projects

call for a certified designer, but as a homeowner, you should know what you like, the elements that you must have, and which ones you can live without. “A high-end kitchen is not determined by its size, but rather the quality of materials and use of space,” says Natascha Kruusi, senior marketing manager of Gaggenau. “Create a cohesive environment by using appliances that are exceptionally engineered and gorgeous to look at on their own, but also blend seamlessly with the surrounding area.” Gaggenau’s fine lines and customization allow size variation and function versatility while being beautifully crafted and luxurious. So, say goodbye to basic. Whether strategic amenities or A-to-Z perfection equals highend, there’s no doubt you don’t need a coastal estate to have a sizzling kitchen.
