So, You Wanna Be A Lifeguard?
Any time of the year, whether swimming, boating, or going to a water park, everyone should know the basics of water safety. The Red Cross offers courses for personal safety and swimming for all ages, safety in small water craft and courses leading to lifeguard certification. The best part about taking a Red Cross course is that while you are learning, you are also helping the Red Cross’ mission to provide compassionate care to those in need. There are two important elements prior to becoming a lifeguard. The American Red Cross requires that you must be at least 15 years old and pass course-specific swimming requirements prior to starting training.
Courses and Preparation / Ways to Learn:
In-person course: Created for those who prefer a traditional learning environment, in-person courses are led by one of best-in-class instructors. In-person courses provide the time you need to learn, ask questions and understand the hands-on skills needed to become certified as a lifeguard. The total time commitment for the Lifeguarding course is 25 hours, 20 minutes. Blended learning: Designed for those who need more flexibility, blended learning option combines both in-person and online coursework for a total time commitment of 19 hours, 30 minutes in-person and 7 hours, 30 minutes of online work for the Lifeguarding course. There are three main training options to choose from when preparing to become a lifeguard. Training options feature three core courses
which can be customized with a variety of optional add-on modules: • Lifeguarding • Shallow Water Lifeguarding (water up to 5’ deep) • Aquatic Attraction Lifeguarding (water up to 3’ deep) A two-year certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED is issued upon successful completion of training and coursework. A digital certification is available upon completion. American Red Cross provides entry-level participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent,
recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical service providers can take over.
Prerequisites for becoming a lifeguard are:
• minimum age 15 years old • swim 300 yards continuously • tread water for two minutes using only the legs • complete a timed event within one minute, 40 seconds
• starting in the water, swim 20 yards • surface dive to a depth of seven to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object • return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point • exit the water without using a ladder or steps There are online and in-person classes available. Locally, classes are held at the Town of Hempstead’s Echo Park in West Hempstead, at LIU Post in Brookville and at the Freeport Recreation Center. Visit www.redcross. org for more information.

Teaching Children Empathy
Demonstrate empathy towards your children
When children’s emotional needs are met, they are more likely to be empathetic. Soothing your children during times of distress increases the likelihood that they will soothe others. When children feel valued,
PARENTING MATTERS Graziella Simonetti they are more likely to value others. Labeling and validating your children’s emotions supports their ability to both handle them and to show care for others.
Demonstrate empathy towards others
Children notice how we treat others. Demonstrating empathy or pointing out situations in which empathy should be offered will help children build their own skill. When watching shows or movies with your children, talk about how the characters might be feeling. “How do you think she feels when...” “How would you feel if...”
Teach feeling identification
The ability to name their own emotions makes children better able to identify and empathize with the
emotions of others. Name emotions you are feeling throughout your day; name your child’s feelings for them, and point out feelings you think others may be experiencing. “I felt disappointed when they didn’t have what I wanted at the store.” “You seem sad that you did not do well on your math test.” “It looks like those children won’t play with that little girl. How do you think that makes her feel?”
Reconvene after conflicts
During a conflict, emotions are high, and it is usually not the best time to process what everyone is feeling. When all parties are calm, validate emotions and discuss feelings. “You seemed angry when John took your car. It’s okay to be angry, but it is not okay to hit. How do you think that made him feel? Next time, what could you do instead of hitting?”
Practice
Like other skills in life, empathy is one that benefits from repetition. Ask your children about issues at school, and brainstorm what peers might be feeling. Discuss if there are ways to
help. Hold meetings as a family, and demonstrate respect for the ideas and feelings shared.
Rethink “I’m sorry”
We often coach our children to end a conflict by simply saying “I’m sorry.” While showing remorse is important, simply saying “I’m sorry” does not build empathy. Instead of having your children apologize and move on, consider focusing on the other person’s feelings and how to help them feel better. “Look at Maria’s face. She looks very sad that you pushed her. Let’s see if she is okay and if you can help her feel better. Maybe you can get her a Band Aid.” Graziella Simonetti is a parent educator for EAC Network’s Long Island Parenting Institute and works as an early childhood social worker for the New York City Department of Education. She holds an advanced certificate in parent education from Adelphi University and is a NYSPEP credentialed parenting educator. Simonetti is a former kindergarten teacher.

Empathy is the ability to understand how another person is feeling and to respond sensitively to those feelings. Empathetic people are typically able to understand the perspective of others and respect and value their views, whether they agree with them or not. Having empathy helps build relationships and can possibly prevent bullying. Research suggests that students are less empathetic today than they were 30 years ago. Some experts view technology as the culprit. Socializing through a screen does not provide the opportunity to process facial expressions in others or to tune into their emotions. Other experts suggest that social and emotional development are not emphasized in order to focus on academic achievement. These societal changes make it even more important to actively support building your child’s empathy skills.

Fans of Star Wars and Divergent will revel in internationally bestselling author Veronica Roth’s stunning new science-fiction fantasy teen fiction series, Carve The Mark, which debuted on Jan. 17. On a planet where violence and vengeance rule, in a galaxy where some are favored by fate, everyone develops a currentgift, a unique power meant to shape the future. While most benefit from their currentgifts, Akos and Cyra do not—their gifts make them vulnerable to others’ control. Can they reclaim their gifts, their fates and their lives, and reset the balance of power in this world? Cyra is the sister of the brutal tyrant who rules the Shotet people. Cyra’s currentgift gives her pain and power—something her brother exploits, using her to torture his enemies. But Cyra is much more than just a blade in her brother’s hand: she is resilient, quick on her feet and smarter than he knows.

theatre and the visual arts. The half-day program enables students to complete their core academic classes in their home high school and receive two and a half hours of intensive training in their chosen field of artistic study. As part of their professional-level training, students regularly receive one-on-one access to experienced professionals working in the industry. Students have recently benefitted from master classes and workshops led by pop-rock icon Billy Joel, actor and director Ralph Macchio, and Paul Taylor Dance Company principal dancer Michael Trusnovec, who is a LIHSA graduate, among others. “We are incredibly proud of the instruction and experiences offered at the Long Island High School for the Arts,” said Dr. Robert Dillon, district superintendent of Nassau BOCES. “Each year, we look forward to our annual Open House to showcase the school’s programs, as well as the talent our students possess. We encourage all students interested in pursuing the arts to come down and take advantage of this opportunity to learn how LIHSA can help you reach your dreams.” Alumni of the school have gone on to develop successful careers in all arts fields. In addition to landing starring roles on Broadway, alumni have danced with national touring companies, illustrated for New Yorker magazine, designed
successful swimsuit lines, and embarked on technical careers working for companies such as Cirque de Soleil and at landmarks such as Lincoln Center. Graduates have also earned prestigious scholarships and grants to continue their education at some of the nation’s most highly esteemed colleges and conservatories, including the Juilliard School, Boston Conservatory, Cooper Union and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
