A Dress For The Ages

BY JENNIFER FAUCI

I

jfauci@antonmediagroup.com

t is the prettiest dress a girl will ever wear. Some little girls have been dreaming of their wedding dress since they heard their first fairytale. Others experience a quieter, more intimate moment when they see themselves as a bride for the first time. Behind those personal moments are professionals who treat every day as a walk down the aisle. General manager RoseLynn Fiumara has been with Bridal Reflections since she was in eighth grade. The company celebrated

45 years of business in February, making Bridal Reflections one of the oldest names in the wedding industry. It is that milestone that qualifies Fiumara to know a thing or two about wedding dress designs, styles and what’s on trend. “People are starting to ask for satin again. For a long time everything was lace, tulle or net but we’re seeing satin come back,” said Fiumara of the once traditional material that has regained popularity. “We’re also seeing A-line after a long time of fit and flare, mermaid and trumpet looks. Long sleeves are also popular, even in the summer because girls are

3B

looking for that Boho long sleeve very feminine, soft floral feel.” While the traditional styles seem to be making a comeback, Fiumara said that the biggest trend the industry has seen comes in the form of detachable wrap trains and overskirts, which many designers leave as an option. “It looks like a big full skirt and once you take off the outer layer, inside is something sexier with a slit or fit and flare,” said Fiumara, adding that the once preferred strapless neckline is slowly losing momentum. “It’s mostly sleeves, a deep v neck, illusion and very sexy fronts and backs that are open or sheer.” Bridal Reflections focuses on 15-20 different bridal designers across the three locations in Massapequa, Carle Place and Manhattan. Top designers of the moment are Calla Blanche, Galia Lahav and Eve of Milady. The Manhattan salon also receives requests for Australian designer Leah Da Gloria and her couture styles. “We are doing very nicely with Calla Blanche and we’re still doing really well with Galia Lahav, which we get asked for constantly,” said Fiumara of the fashion house’s two lines, Galia and Galia Lahav Couture in Manhattan. “We’ve always done well with Eve of Milady. Her look changes with the times and she nails it every season.” Fiumara says that while nine to 12 months before a wedding is the ideal time for a bride to order her dress, some designers can do quick deliveries. Bridal Reflections also has an online portal to see

what designers have in stock and what is available. “A lot of times, brides have a vision of what they want to look like, so we will always try on what they want, and then respectfully show them what we think might look even more flattering on their

body,” said Fiumara, noting that there is so much information at a bride’s disposal from magazines to social media that can be confusing and overwhelming. “The wedding industry is forever changing, but we meet a lot of nice people and families. We just started a mother/daughter blog on our website that has pictures of mothers and daughters who were

both our brides, which is really nice to see. We have the experience, we cater to different types of brides and we know them well.” Bridal Reflections Massapequa is located at 3 Broadway, Massapequa. For more information on hours and locations, call 516-795-2222 or visit www.bridalreflections.com.

Say ‘I Do’ With Your Dog There, Too BY JENNIFER FAUCI

Q A

How did you come up with this concept?

After a few of my walking and sitting clients asked me to help them out with having their dog at their wedding. The first couple asked me to pick their dog up at their home and bring her to the hotel. I stayed with her in the hotel room with the bride and her friends until it was time. The dog got walked down the aisle with someone and I was asked to drop her off at her boarding facility so they could go on their honeymoon. After a few of these, me being the entrepreneur I am, I thought I should offer this as a division of my business.

Q A

Do you have different packages and price points?

We really try and customize a package for the needs of the day. Some dogs can handle more than others in terms of crowds, being outside in heat, and other factors. It can be anywhere from $300 to $1,200 depending on the needs of the couple.

Q A

What services do you provide?

For Oh To Be A Dog At Your Wedding we provide day-of care. We can pick up and drop off your pet and we come armed with everything your dog will need from natural grain-free treats, water/ food bowls and squeaky toys for photos to wipes, a brush and poop bags. We also provide help with engagement and/or proposal photos. We provide GPS tracked walks, runs and pet sitting through Oh To Be A Dog.

Q A

Does Oh To Be A Dog At Your Wedding extend to other pets as well? I have never been asked to care for another type of pet, but, why not? I think I would draw

Q A

Why should pet parents look into this?

It’s a fun and stress free way to have your dog at one of the most important days in your life. Dogs are our family and more and more we want them to be with us as we experience life. We see dogs traveling more and people making life plans that include their dog. Weddings can be stressful for everyone involved, including family. Having someone dedicated to your pet, that is not a family member, is a sure-fire way to eliminate stress and allow everyone to have fun. Also, as professional pet care providers we know what dogs need in order to be safe and healthy. eddings are a year-round celebration, but the summer sees a surge in nuptials. While you prepare to say “I do” to your betrothed, don’t forget your four-legged friend, who loves you just as much. Shannon Sardella Arnold is the founder of Oh To Be A Dog & Oh To Be A Dog At Your Wedding, a company that offers pet care to dogs at weddings and photoshoots. The California native and animal lover, who now lives in Manhattan with her wife, started her business as a dog walking and pet sitting service back in 2010 in Pasadena, CA. The company grew to a second location in the San Fernando Valley recently and Arnold launched her Manhattan location this year.

Simply The Best

Manhasset salon celebrates milestone anniversary BY JENNIFER FAUCI

jfauci@antonmediagroup.com

“People will stare. Make it worth their while,” said Harry Winston, a man who knew how to make a woman sparkle. As one of the premier salons on Long Island, nuBest Salon and Spa does the same, but it is so much more than a place to get primped and pampered. It is a true lifestyle destination. When Michael Mazzei opened nuBest in 1973, he brought with him a passion for beauty and fashion. Now, 45 years later his son, Jamie, and nephews Vincent and Christian lead a team of more than 125 professionals, all of whom are an integral part of the family business that occupies 20,000 square feet of Manhasset real estate. “My father had previously owned a chain of salons, but he always admired this spot,” said Jamie Mazzei of the Manhasset building nuBest is housed in, which was formerly the old Best and Company department store. “His dream was to put everything under one roof, which is a little unorthodox to put all your eggs in one basket, but he did it anyway.” Mazzei, who serves as creative director and hair designer, along with his cousins are responsible for training staff and keeping the salon up to date. He came into the business in 1987 after going to school at Aveda

and then over to London to train at Vidal Sassoon. “My father shared his experiences with me and he was always very keen on staying current with the newest techniques,” said Mazzei, of his father, who is still very hands on and involved. Mazzei also noted that nuBest still holds classes every Tuesday night

for the staff, who never stop passing on education to grow the salon. “We decided to renovate the salon to what you see today and you really can spend the entire day here. There’s not a service or expert we don’t have or can’t provide.” What is unique about nuBest is that each staff member has a specialty, whether it be coloring or cutting hair. Michael’s philosophy has always been that it is “better to be a master of one thing than a jack of all trades.” Hair designers use top styling products from brands like Oribe, Kérastase and Celeb Luxury, a very innovative color maintenance product, which recently won an award in Italy. nuBest is an integral part of the Manhasset community especially when it comes to charity. Among many organizations and institutions, Mazzei said the salon is involved with the Tower Foundation, the Manhasset Coalition Against Breast Cancer, Northwell Transplant Center and partner with the Americana. Gloria Sombrotto has been the general manager of nuBest for 28 years and has seen the business grow first hand. More than just a salon and spa, nuBest offers laser treatments, micro abrasion, color treatments, and nail and makeup services. “Michael has always been involved in beauty and fashion and he feels fashion sets the trend for what happens in beauty and vice versa. As

the beauty trends change, so do our needs,” said Sombrotto. “Michael’s partner is a master colorist and they developed ARTec, the first ever color depositing shampoo (that business was sold to L’Oréal in 2002). “We’re constantly creating what’s next. We [nuBest] have a reputation in the industry and we strive to maintain that and always go above and beyond.” On June 23, nuBest officially celebrates its 45th anniversary. It is a family legacy that will continue to live on for years to come in the generations of Manhasset families and those who know that true beauty is an art that takes shape from the inside out. nuBest Salon and Spa is located at 1482 Northern Blvd., Manhasset. the note but include both bride and groom’s name in the note.

he wedding is over, it was a beautiful day an everyone had a wonderful time. Most of all, people’s generosity was unbelievable and the gifts were beyond your expectations. So what is next on your agenda? One of the most important tasks of your wedding is sending out thank you cards. Relatives, friends and perhaps even people you barely know have taken time to choose what they thought would be the perfect gift for you on your wedding day. Even in this age of advanced technology, a handwritten thank you note is the standard expression of courtesy for this kindness that should not be forgotten or rushed. In the book Emily Post’s Etiquette, Manners For A New World by Peggy Post, Anna Post, Lizzie Post and Daniel Post Senning, the following tips are provided:

• Don’t take shortcuts. Store bought cards with pre-printed wording are not an appropriate substitute for a handwritten note. Make reference to the person and the gift in the note, perhaps indicating how you will use it.

• Keep a detailed record (handwritten or computer log) of each gift received and name of giver/givers (make sure to include full names and addresses).

• Send thank you notes to your attendants, people who entertain for you, people who house and entertain your guests, those who do special kindnesses for you (someone who donates their time to assist), suppliers and vendors.

• Respond in a timely manner. A handwritten thank you note should be sent within three months of receipt of each gift. Consider setting a daily goal or send thank you notes as gifts are received. Gifts that are mailed or shipped may be acknowledged with a phone call or email initially but a handwritten note must still be sent. • Share the responsibility. Both bride and groom can share in writing out the thank you notes. The person who knows the gift-giver best should write

• Type of stationary is key. Use standard one-sided cards or a single fold note card with matching envelopes. You can purchase these from the vendor that created your invitations or Crane’s stationery or Papyrus stationery are also good choices. • Signature: Bride signs her maiden name before the wedding; married name after the wedding. • Send a written thank you card to everyone who sends you a present (and/or attends the wedding), even if you thank them in person. This also includes those who give you money, charitable contributions, etc.

• Don’t wait for photos if this will delay sending the cards out. Whether the gift is large or small, all should be equally acknowledged with the same level of kindness and enthusiasm. Linda J. Wedding Vows: Our Partners Should Make Us Grow The Vows

Wedding season is upon us. June is the most popular month to get married, but the entire season is often filled with weekends jam-packed with wedded bliss. As I was in the process of getting a bridesmaid’s dress tailored last week, a friend called me on the phone to run her vows by me. In it, she used one of the phrases that is all too common, but very shortsighted. “My partner, (insert name), makes me complete.” I’ve heard this statement a countless number of times, often in wedding vows, but is this really what we want out of a relationship? Sure, I understand that it implies that a person and his/her partner fit together and become better off than when alone, but it also alludes to the idea that people need a partner to feel whole. If we are waiting for another to make us complete, what does this imply about the state we were in when single? While we want to be able to rely on our partners, it is important to be able to believe in our own inner strength. So, if we don’t need our partner to feel complete, then what is it that we want?

expand declines, because there is more overlap between the two people.

LOVE LESSONS

Self-expansion is often associated with greater relationship satisfaction. Ledbetter (2013) noted that self-expansion predicts how often couples will share problems with one another and display affection.

Marisa T. Cohen

Self-Expansion

Many people worry that once their lives become so entwined, while they benefit from the increased closeness, they lack the excitement they once experienced, as well as the opportunities for growth. In order to continue to expand as a result of your relationship, consider the following suggestions: 1. Take a class together and learn something new 2. Pick up a new hobby 3. Join a group to meet new potential friends—for those of you getting married, consider a newlyweds group 4. Travel and share new experiences with one another

What We Want A great way to think of the benefits we derive from having satisfying relationships with our partners involves using the self-expansion model. This model states that in order to feel fulfilled, our sense of self continues to expand and grow throughout our lives. One way to expand or grow involves our romantic relationships. Forming unions helps us grow, as we benefit from learning from a new person. If we are already in a relationship (I’m especially talking to those of you about to head down the aisle), we can grow as a result of trying new things with our partners. This may involve engaging in new activities. Not only do relationships lead to self-expansion, but expansion can in turn benefit our relationships.

Researchers Aron, Lewandowski, Mashek, and Aron (2013) note that there are two main components to self-expansion. First is the motivational principle, which is when we increase our ability to accomplish goals when with others. Second involves the inclusion-of-other-in-the-self principle, in which we benefit from the other person’s resources and perspectives. When we enter a new relationship, there are many opportunities to expand, which may be part of our initial subconscious attraction to the person. We benefit as a result of learning from our new partner, and we grow as a result of sharing in his/her ideas, interests, and resources. This is another reason why the honeymoon phase of a relationship may be so exciting. As we get comfortable in our relationships over time, the ability to

Take Away: What You Can Do To Continue To Expand

For those about to head down the aisle, as you finalize your vows, keep these ideas in mind. Remember, your partner shouldn’t make you whole, rather he/she should help you to grow. Perhaps you may want to consider the

Bridesmaid Dress Trends BY KIMBERLY DIJKSTRA

Jenny Yoo Mira Strapless Floor-Length Dress in Cinnamon Rose $285

kdijkstra@antonmediagroup.com

N

ow that wedding season is underway, certain styles have emerged as the most popular for bridesmaid dresses. This year, we are seeing a lot of texture, often in the form of lace, sequins, shirring, embroidery or sensible ruffles. Silhouettes are sophisticated, with tea-length dresses as common as floor-length dresses. Asymmetrical necklines remain popular, as do classic goddess-style gowns. Colors this year are all over the map and brides aren’t afraid of florals and prints for their bridesmaids. It’s up to the bride to decide if her bridesmaids should blend together in neutral tones or stand out in bright hues. While black and white never goes out of style, many brides are choosing toned down colors like mauve, dusty rose, lavender and champagne. The many dress choices out there can be narrowed down by the theme of the wedding, the personality of the couple and the preferences of the bridal party. Here are a few bridesmaid dresses, all available at Lord & Taylor, that are on trend this season.

Xscape One-Shoulder Embroidered Sheath Dress in Navy Gold $189

Two-tone embroidery enhances this asymmetrical dress with one long sleeve and a choker neckline. Brocade fabric is rich and lustrous and fits into any sophisticated wedding party.

The Mira dress by Jenny Yoo is pure elegance and universally flattering. It features a full-length circle skirt, a shirred strapless bodice and sweetheart neckline. A detachable chiffon sash can be worn in several ways, including draped around the shoulders (pictured) or tied around the waist. (Photo source: www.jennyyoo.com)

Laundry by Shelli Segal Pleated Open-Back Gown $295

Bridesmaids will make a dramatic entrance in this vibrant chiffon gown that drapes over the body in a Grecian-inspired pleated design. The plunging V neckline, open back and floor-sweeping hem will dazzle on the dance floor.

Xscape Floral Lace Sheath Dress in Fuschia Nude $229 Elaborate lace florals catch the eye on this curve-hugging dress by Xscape that works as well for the evening as it does for an afternoon garden wedding. (Photos courtesy of Lord & Taylor)

Adrianna Papell Sequin Lace Dress in Smoky Amethyst $189

This Adrianna Papell dress is a beautiful example of a textured bridesmaid dress. The sequin lace fabric in a muted purple tone combined with a boatneck and drop-waist skirt gives off a vintage vibe.

BCBG Max Azria Marquise Off-theShoulder Dress in Bare Pink $338 Gone are the days of puffy-sleeved bridesmaid dresses with out-of-control ruffles. This mini cocktail creation features a tiered ruffle skirt and an eye-catching décolletage.
