Museum Quality Personalize your living space with a gallery wall

reating a gallery wall in your home is the perfect way to bring a boring, blank space to life and leave a lasting impression on your guests. Instead of hunting for the perfect statement painting or experimenting with wallpaper, consider arranging framed art prints, quotes and other decor pieces into an aesthetically-pleasing (and Instagramworthy) wall collage. It’s an easy way to personalize your space, as these galleries often reflect the unique personality of each homeowner. If you want to make an empty wall stand out, follow these basic steps to make your very own eye-catching gallery wall.
Pick your color scheme Though many gallery walls can still make an impact when there is no distinct color scheme linking its pieces, the best way to draw attention is to create a cohesive symphony of text and art by choosing two or three
colors to base your gallery around. Pick one accent color that will appear in multiple prints, and try complimenting colors to create an arrangement of shades that will help the wall flow together seamlessly.
Start collecting frames/ repurposing old ones Frames are the perfect touch to connect the pieces on your wall and make them appear as one polished display. Some people choose to hang their art prints in identical frames, or frames of the same color, or even a mismatched medley of old frames that they’ve now found a purpose for. But the important thing to remember is to add variation. Choose frames of different sizes and, if you feel bold, different styles. A little variety goes a long way towards making your gallery wall stand out.
Add different shapes and textures To add dimension to the gallery, try to pick out a few decor pieces that will
stand out from the rest of your flat, framed prints. Some of today’s popular decor pieces like wooden letters, clocks, plants, Polaroids, etc. can serve as perfect finishing touches to your near-completed accent wall. Just be sure that you scatter them throughout the arrangement so that they aren’t concentrated in one specific area. Too can even print quotes and photos out many different shapes next to each at home on regular white paper to other may be distracting from the create an affordable DIY gallery wall. gallery as a whole.
Find art prints and quotes that speak to you If you don’t have any luck finding ideal art pieces in-store, there are countless websites online where you can browse through hundreds of art prints and quotes. Search “art prints” online and order a variety of prints and patterns that fit together. When picking these out, it’s important to incorporate simple designs as well as statement ones so that more complicated pieces aren’t competing for attention. If you’re on a budget, you
Create your masterpiece When in the final planning stages, it’s a good idea to lay out all of your pieces on the floor, in front of the wall on which they will hang if possible. You can arrange and rearrange them to your heart’s content, until you find a desired compilation. Another strategy is to use paper, a pencil, and scissors to trace and cut out templates of each piece, taping them to the wall to get an idea of where you want to hang each item. Don’t forget to use a level and ruler when hanging so that nothing winds up crooked.

The luxury brand just added home accessories with pillows, poufs, ottomans, throws, seat cushions, door stoppers and even hot water–bottle covers. Owner and CEO Karen Levitt launched Grenn Pilot in 2016 with a line of outerwear designed in her own style, keeping the quality-seeking, trendsetting woman in mind while incorporating unexpected pairings. “The line features dramatic statement outerwear that can be worn casually or dressed up for evenings,” said Levitt, who decided to branch out last season, introducing handbags and home accessories. “If someone only wants a touch of glam, the accessories are a natural fit,” noted Levitt. “My best friend is an interior designer and said that the materials I use would be wonderful

“My home is like the line,” said Levitt. “Comfortable, classic, with the luxury of the pillows. I like the different textures that Grenn Pilot brings to a room.” The firm’s tagline is “Where luxury meets style,” and Levitt said her new category “has been expanding to some of the best home stores” and she is “working with great interior designers.” The brand is “true luxury with a sporty/vintage twist,” she said. “There is nothing fussy about this line. It is extremely versatile.” While focusing on quality and style, Levitt is conscious about the materials. “All of our skins come from sustainable sources and are a byproduct of the food industry,” she said. “We pride ourselves on using tanneries that are accountable and environmentally responsible.” Launching Grenn Pilot after spending 35 years as a buyer has proven to be an asset for Levitt, who was able to bring insight from the other side of the business to run the company locally. “I love living on Long Island and
having a business based here,” Levitt said. “The retail culture has changed everywhere with online shopping, department stores, coupons, etc. My strategy is to align Grenn Pilot with specialty stores. I have great relationships with my stores. It feels more personal to me. I try to do trunk shows with these stores and get on the floor to meet and chat with their customers. By doing this, I can figure out what they are looking for.” Grenn Pilot’s new home accessories have been warmly welcomed in several area shops. “The response has been amazing,” said Levitt. “Because of the options for customization in terms of the numerous colors as well as the reversible aspects of many of the pieces, people feel a true sense of freedom when choosing an item that suits them best. They are their own ‘pilots,’ in a sense.” Visit www.grennpilot.com to browse the line or view a list of retailers, who can custom order home goods for their clients.

f you find yourself in the seaside town of Port Washington, take a stroll down Main Street and pop into Stam Gallery, a nod to the past. You’ll be glad you found an escape from the trappings of modern life. Steven Stam is the owner of Stam Gallery, an antique store that sells, buys and appraises fine art and antiques. With an eye for art and design, Stam respects antiques of other times and places. “My two most favorite activities are the constant process of learning—despite my age—while researching the history of objects and artists that come my way, and the absolute feeling of high as a result of a great discovery,” said Stam, who deals with period furniture and objects of virtue. As an appraiser of personal property for more than 40 years, with emphasis on fine art and antiques, Stam said he has developed a keen eye for objects of significant artistic beauty and quality, which jump out at him.

“Even in a pile of mediocrity, crying to be recognized and differentiated from its surroundings, it is wonderful to identify a beautiful little Tiffany mantle clock on the shelf in the midst of ‘made in Japan’ figurines and such,” said Stam. “It delights me to inform my appraisal client whenever previously unrecognized objects are found.” Over the years, one can imagine that Stam has come across a number of unique treasures in his line of work. Recent years’ discoveries, he said, include the unique modern marble desk of Marcel Breuer on which the original Whitney Museum was designed and a previously unknown very rare Rembrandt etching. His impressive collection of antique furniture actually stems from Long Island’s north shore, among other places. “The Great Gatsby country is rich with old estates, and lots of old people who bought their furnishings on Madison Avenue antique stores and on tours of Europe and the Orient. Their children want only modern furniture and designs,” he said of today’s collectors. “Consequently, we are offered a great many better and best antiques their kids dislike. There are many sellers and, unfortunately, few buyers here on Long Island, so we buy a lot of great quality pieces and offer them to a market of museums, dealers and discerning collectors all over America and overseas.” In offering a wide variety of high quality and interesting antique furniture, fine art and objects, Stam prides his business on being unique. He loves talking to people interested in his collection,

utumn is one of my favorite seasons. The weather is cooler, the corn is fresh and Thanksgiving is just around the corner. But with the kids back at school and after-school activities in full swing, many of us forget about the garden. The fall is a fantastic time to plant trees, shrubs, perennials and bulbs. Although the air temperature is cooler, the soil is still quite warm, which allows plant roots to grow well until the ground freezes. hen it comes to putting down roots in your family’s home, Anthony’s World of Floors Inc. is always ready to lay a good foundation. Anne Garofalo (right) works with her three brothers in the family business that has been around for almost 50 years. If they know anything, it’s how to make customers happy with a home that has solid footing.
Q A
Tell me about Anthony’s World of Floors Inc. Anthony’s World of Floors Inc. is a family owned and operated business our dad opened in 1972. I work together with my three, brothers Rich, Bob and Joe Garofalo. Our father gave us a strong, solid foundation to provide top-notch customer service. He said if you provide a great service, the people will keep coming back, and they will bring their family and friends. We have some of his first customers and their families still coming back.
Q A
What are some of the design trends in flooring these days? The “wood look” is today’s number one choice for flooring in every room of the house, including commercial spaces such as offices, stores and restaurants. Since traditional solid hardwood is not suitable in every room, durable water proof vinyl planks and porcelain tile perfectly replicate hardwood floors. They allow “wood look floors” to be installed in all spaces where solid hardwood is typically not recommended. With today’s advanced
technology and amazing imagery and texture, vinyl tile takes on an exact match to the real authentic hardwood floors. Gray tones, taupes and dark browns are the popular color trends in wood floors with the most requested species are white oak, maple and hickory. New home owners are steering clear of the traditional golden, amber and red tones of red oak, cherry and mahogany. For those who are carpet lovers, individuality of patterns and geometrics are on the rise, but the current color trend are grays that range from cool silver to warm taupe. Reclaimed wood and handscraped texture are on the radar offering a rustic chic and modern farmhouse look. Watch for more patterns like herringbone and chevron that give a more artsy or formal elegance.
Q A
Do you have any environmentally friendly options? Homeowners want to know where their floor came from. Is it safe for my family? Is it safe for pets? Using 100 percent natural, renewable, recyclable and home-grown materials is huge right now. If you already have wood floors, restore them. We can revive floors by sanding them down to the original wood, stain them and protect them with three finish options: water-based polyurethane, oil based polyurethane or natural oil floor finishes. We carry all flooring products: wood, carpet, vinyl, porcelain, rubber, cork, wool and rugs.
Q A
Does the business do any custom orders for clients? Absolutely. We do custom rugs, custom colors, custom patterns and layouts such as herringbone and chevron. We can custom dye
broadloom carpet to any color in the spectrum for as little as $100.
Q A
Where do you source your materials from? We proudly sell products manufactured here in the USA. We label and identify all products with the places of origin.
Q A
Why should someone buy from Anthony’s? Because we have made a commitment to be flooring experts, to provide answers to all flooring questions and solutions to all flooring problems and above all, to provide customer service beyond one’s expectations. Anthony’s World of Floors Inc., is located at 49 Manorhaven Blvd., Port Washington. For more information, visit www.anthonysworldoffloors.com or call 516-883-2159.
