The annual Feast of St. Rocco, now in its 41st year, will be arriving in Glen Cove again on Tuesday, July 26, so clear your calendars and make room in your bellies for the six-day festival with delicious Italian food as the “best feast in the east” opens. The feast attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year. From July 26 through Sunday, July 31, visitors can enjoy the food, carnival games and rides, live music and other attractions. Hours are 6 to 11 p.m., Tuesday through Friday; 3 to 11 p.m., on Saturday; and 3 to 10 p.m. on Sunday. Food specialties include sausage and pepper

sandwiches and the delicious meals prepared in the Pasta Restaurant where homemade pasta, meatballs, tripe, eggplant and other Italian favorites are served. In addition, there is a wide variety of traditional carnival food vendors. The Pastry Pavilion is a highlight for many who go to enjoy Italian pastries, Belgium waffles, espresso, cappuccino and homemade ice cream served under the stars while live, nightly entertainment fills the air with music and dance. The festival also offers fun-filled rides and games for children of all ages. Benches are provided throughout the midway for parents to relax as their children enjoy the many rides and games that

At a special ceremony last week, Spinello presented Cannata with the key to Glen Cove and named the downtown intersection of Bridge, School and Glen streets as “Richie Cannata Place” for the city’s summer music season. Glen Cove Girl Scouts Awarded Highest Honor BY RECORD PILOT STAFF

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County recently distributed 101 Gold Awards during a ceremony hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Erin Moore and Jessica Nicole Bellomo of Glen Cove were among awardees. Now in its 100th year, the Gold Award program recognizes the power and dedication shared by an elite group of young women who earn the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve. Moore and Bellomo spent more than 80 hours over the past year planning, executing and presenting the results of their projects, which aimed to make the world a better place for others as well as themselves. “We are extremely proud to celebrate the achievement of over 100 local young women earning their Girl Scout Gold Award during its 100th year,” said Donna Ceravolo, executive director and CEO of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “On average, only five percent of eligible Girl Scouts successfully earn the Gold Award, making Erin and Jessica part of an exclusive group of women with the tools to become leaders in the 21st century.”

Gold Award projects have positively impacted girls’ lives, their communities and the world for 100 years. Approximately 1 million Girl Scout alumnae have developed Gold Award projects that addressed local or global issues. After identifying an area of interest, a successful Gold Award recipient performs hours of research and prepares a project proposal to be submitted for feedback and approval to the Girl Scouts Council before embarking on her project. The Girl Scout presents her final conclusions as the last step of the journey.

Both recipients each tackled a project that held a deep significance to them. Moore’s Gold Award project, titled “The Effects of Music on Children,” focused on using music to help improve how students with disabilities learn. After doing some research, Moore created CDs teachers could use in the classroom for students to listen to. The music on the CDs helped the students concentrate and advance in learning skills. Through her project, “Operation Pet Safety and Animal Cruelty Awareness (OPSACA),” Bellomo wanted to teach people how to properly care for their pets and to raise awareness about animal cruelty. Bellomo created brochures, a webpage, pet emergency kits and collaborated with various community partners to spread the word about treating our pets with care and respect. Lifelong value comes with having earned a Gold Award. According to the Girl Scout Research Institute, Gold Award recipients display more positive life outcomes

pertaining to sense of self, life, satisfaction, leadership, life success, community service and civic engagement. Recipients of the award who enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces may receive advanced rank for their achievements and can receive scholarships or other recognition from most colleges or universities. Notable Gold Award recipients include Jan Hopkins, CNN financial news anchor, and Betsy Boze, senior fellow at American Association of State Colleges and Universities and president at Kent State University Stark.

Sumi-e Paintings On Exhibit At The Golden Gallery BY SF COLLINS

The Golden Gallery of the Glen Cove Senior Center is delighted to host a group exhibit of Sumi-e paintings produced by the members of the Asia Artists Association of New York from now through the end of August. Members use both ancient and contemporary Sumi-e painting techniques to produce works of art that are both modern and traditional in their style and appeal. Sumi-e is the traditional brush painting of East Asia. Sumi-e is the Japanese word for Black Ink Painting. This style of painting and calligraphy developed in ancient China, where emphasis is placed on each individual brushstroke. The Chinese often speak of Sumi-e as “writing a painting’ or “painting a poem.” A great painting is judged on the ability of the brushstrokes on paper to capture the spirit (ch’i) of nature rather than a photographic likeness. The Asian Artists Association of New York is a relatively new chapter of the international organization Asian

Artists display work featured at the Golden Gallery. Artists Association of USA, whose membership exceeds 2,000 renowned artists and professionals. The mission of the association and its parent organization is to foster communication and the interchange of the arts throughout the world. Opportunities are made possible for visiting artists to exhibit work, attend workshops and participate in conferences. Members have given demonstrations and handson Sumi-e experiences to members of the Glen Cove Senior Center. The exhibiting members are:

Karen Wolf, director; Gladys Stewart, treasurer; Dot Zammit, secretary; and fellow members Carolyn Clarke, Altina Pierro Vergata, Mary WagnerSorenson, Caryn Coville, Rita Palmiri and Talat Jaleel. Wolf has exhibited her work through the Long Island Sumi-e Society, Suburban Art League and the Town of Oyster Bay. Stewart has exhibited in Long Island Sumi-e Society shows and exhibits by the Town of Oyster Bay. Zammit has had many exhibitions with the Long Island Sumi-e Society.

Clarke is an artist and teacher of Asian Brush Painting. Through her teachings and workshops, she has introduced many to the beauty of Sumi-e. Clarke, an award-winning artist, has exhibited extensively on Long Island. Vergata, Jaleel and Palmieri have displayed their work in numerous Sumi-e Society sponsored shows. WagnerSorenson is a watercolorist who recently branched out into Sumi-e brush painting. Coville is a prolific artist who has exhibited both her Asian brush paintings and her magnificent colored pencil creations. All of the artists have exhibited with the Asian Artists Association of New York. This is a group of talented artists whose work enthralls all who have had the pleasure of seeing one of their exhibits. The paintings are on view in the Golden Gallery of the Glen Cove Senior Center, 130 Glen St,, Glen Cove, from now through Aug. 30. The Glen Cove Youth Bureau, in cooperation with the Friends of the Glen Cove Youth Board, is teaming up with local citizens, organizations and businesses to provide back to school supplies to disadvantaged youth in the community. A backpack filled with supplies will be presented to children who otherwise would not have what they need to succeed in their studies. Last year, 266 children in kindergarten through 12th-grade received back to school supplies as a result of this effort. Given the cost of getting ready for school, the need is greater than ever this year. For example, on average it costs $78 to purchase all of the supplies on the school list for a first-grader in the Glen Cove School District and $83 to supply a fourth-grader. This cost simply covers school supplies. It does not cover back to school clothing, shoes, coats, etc. For families living on a fixed income, especially those

Folks can also participate in religious prayer services and Recitation of the Holy Rosary on various evenings. The traditional Procession of Saint Rocco, the Patron Saint, follows the 10:15 a.m. family mass on Sunday. The statue of St. Rocco is carried

throughout the streets of the community. During the course of the procession, the group visits the sick and homebound and the pastor, Fr. Elias Mathew Carr, blesses them with the relic of St. Rocco. Medals are distributed, songs are sung and prayers are recited throughout the entire procession. The Stanton Anderson Band Rocks Downtown Glen Cove’s Village Square Plaza will be rocking out this Friday as the Downtown Sounds free concert series continues with the Stanton Anderson Band. The weekly concert series, presented by OWWR, Old Westbury Web Radio, the Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District and the City of Glen Cove, features free music every Friday evening in downtown Glen Cove. Once called Long Island’s “greatest live act ever,” the Stanton Anderson Band is back, claiming their reign on the rock ’n roll throne. Their powerful live shows and popularity took Long Island by the ears and created a following of life-long fans that came out of the woodwork upon SAB’s reunion in 2000. It all started in the early ‘70s. The ‘70s became the high point of the band’s success with highlights such as a legendary live concert at Rumbottom’s broadcasted on WLIR, a Nassau Coliseum gig opening up for the Marshall Tucker Band and a slot on bills with huge stars including Southside Johnny and the Allman Brothers. The band’s unique sound is sparked by a blend of soulful guitar riffs, bluesy lyrics and bass lines that gravitate down one’s spine creating the groove that is the Stanton Anderson Band. Supported by power-packed percussion and horns, rhythmic keyboards, and the raspy, cabaret voice of Mark Fowler, the band is a rock ‘n roll lifeforce destined for legendary greatness in the 1970s. The music takes place from 7 until 10 p.m. at the Glen Cove Village Square, on the corners of Glen and School streets. Downtown Sounds 2016 will have free parking in nearby municipal garages. group beside me lowered their voices and began discussing someone with a tone of sadness. At first, I thought someone was ill or even worse, died. Not the case! The conversation was about our mailman, Tom, who had just retired. Stories were exchanged and I joined the group as we each confirmed our fondness for him. Most mail carriers are hard-working, efficient and above all, courteous. Tom was all that, but so much more. We were always guaranteed a big friendly smile on a scorching summer’s day or a frost-bitten winter’s morning. I’ve seen him patiently hold a handful of letters in the maillot so a child, smiling in delight, could retrieve them and take them to her mom. With pounds of mail slung over his shoulder he would stop and carry an elderly woman’s packages up the stairway or assist a young mother who just dropped her baby’s tote bag. Personally, I was fortunate to have him place my mail on my foyer table since he knew my injured back prevented me from bending down. His acts of kindness were endless. If you had witnessed the exchange of admiration at the barbecue, you would have felt you were in a “Modern Day Mayberry.” One neighbor told of his days in the Navy when he wrote home to his folks. He always included a “Hi Tom” on the side of his postcard. He took time to loosen stubborn pickle jar lids, took a minute to

listen to the scrambled words of an autistic boy and informed residents when their postage was inadequate. These daily kindnesses were not uncommon. Someone also mentioned that “Tommy” never had his hand out for a tip. People displayed their appreciation with hot chocolate and cold water, depending on the weather, or a simple candy treat. One would guess Tom’s little special services would affect mail delivery. Not true! I could set my clock with his timely delivery. He could move! I never knew his full name. To most he was referred to as “Tommy, the mailman.” I kidded him once that he was “The Angel Mailman.” So… “Tommy Angel Mailman,” if you’re reading this, I believe it would be fair to say all of us at Truesdell Village wish you a wonderful retirement! Also, best wishes to you and your family for a healthy, happy life. We will sorely miss your efficient service and most of all “You Just Being You.” —Diana “DeeGee” Beasley

Cirque du Soleil Soars With Paramour BY BETSY ABRAHAM

The circus has come to Broadway. Cirque du Soleil—known for its touring shows that combine circus arts and street performance—debut Paramour, its first Broadway show back in April, bringing high-caliber theatrics and aerobatics to the Lyric Theatre. Paramour follows the story of Indigo (Ruby Lewis), a scarlet-haired singer who is discovered by AJ Golden (Jeremy Kushnier), a powerful movie director looking for his next star. With her earnest, doe-eyed composer, Joey (Ryan Vona) in tow, the pair head off to Hollywood as Golden promises Indigo fame and fortune while Joey tries to write the perfect love song. A love triangle predictably develops, which may be an overdone plotline but lends itself beautifully to scenes like “The Dream” and “Indigo’s Decision,” where Cirque performers capture the complicated emotions of jealousy and love through acrobatics. What the show lacks in storyline, it makes up fully in jaw-dropping theatrics. There is no lack of amusements with Paramour, as the show packs in flips, acrobatics, trapeze and juggling routines that will leave the audience breathless. The world-renowned Atherton brothers—aerial strap artists who dangle dozens of feet in the air holding onto nothing more than long straps—are one of the show’s best acts, as are acrobats Martin Charrat, Myriam Deraiche and Samuel William Charlton who dangle and flip upside down from a trapeze with complete control. Brilliant choreography and strong vocals shine throughout and the show marries well the mixture of Broadway theatrics with circus stunts. While the acrobatics take center stage, performances by Lewis, who makes a memorable debut, and the rest of the cast, help the whole show come together well. Carlos rightfully and finally getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but the the three members minus Carlos (Nielsen’s son plays drums in Carlos’ stead) released Bang, Zoom, Crazy... With Clean Pass, her daily rides from Melville to East Williston and back have been reduced by about 25 minutes each way, which has not only decreased her stress, but has also saved her money on gas and allowed her to sleep later. Of the approximately 80,000 vehicles that qualify for the program, about 30,000 have Clean Pass stickers, and that number is continuing to increase, said NYSDOT Spokesperson Carol Breen. For this reason, concerns have risen about whether or not it will cause traffic in the HOV lane, but Breen assures that the program is undergoing further study in order to “ensure that the HOV lane is operating as intended, while still promoting the use of fuel-efficient vehicles.” Thus far, she added, the program has been successful, and will continue to be modified and improved according

Long Island Expressway commuters with energy-efficient vehicles are receiving several perks for helping the earth, as they save time, money and gas, and no longer have to experience the hassle of being stuck in traffic. New York’s Clean Pass Program, which was initiated in 2006, is a plan of action intended to foster the usage of more eco-friendly vehicles in order to reduce negative impacts on the environment. The program allows drivers with eligible vehicles to drive in the Long Island Expressway’s HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes without any passengers; the lanes previously permitted buses, motorcycles, and vehicles with two or more occupants only during rush hours—6 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 8 p.m. on weekdays. Though the lanes are open to other vehicles outside of peak times, being able to use it during these heavy-traffic hours gives hybrid car drivers the advantage of a faster, less-stressful commute. To use the Clean Pass Program, vehicle owners—whose cars must receive an average of 45 miles per gallon or better and meet certain emissions standards—can apply through the State Department of Motor Vehicles and will receive four stickers upon approval, according to the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). The stickers are free of charge; applicants simply must call or apply online. Audra Beberman, a Prius-lessee and Clean Pass user from Suffolk County, said the program significantly decreased the time of her commute to and from work. “I kind of expected it to be quicker, but I didn’t realize how much time I would save. [Prior to using Clean Pass] I would sit in traffic for almost an hour, for what should have been a 20-minute commute,” she said.

It was a beautiful day as we drove north on the 101 freeway towards Santa Barbara. The rugged sandy bluffs rose high along the California coast while the sunshine sparkled across the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Thing 1 and Thing 2, then 8 and 5, were trying to sit patiently in the back seat as we drove towards our campground. This was our first outing in our new-to-us, folding camping trailer. To say my heart was happy would be an understatement. I was giddy with excitement. I couldn’t wait to start making fun, family camping memories. Brent and I already had so many from when we were kids, and we wanted to give the same thing to our boys. Not only that, we were ready to relax for the weekend after a long week of work. We were ready to kick up our heels, sit by the fire, and maybe go on a few hikes in the Los Padres National Forest. An hour later we arrived at our campsite, and the boys jumped out of the van. They were busy checking out the campsite when I noticed Thing 2 wasn’t wearing shoes. “Put on your shoes, honey. There might be something sharp.” “I don’t have them,” he replied, playing in the dirt. What? No shoes? Of course, he has shoes. What sort of parent forgets shoes when they go camping? I started searching the van but no luck. In our excitement to hit the road for our first camping experience, we had let him run out the door happy but barefoot. Ooops. Determined not to let this ruin our weekend, we headed up to the camp store. There we bought a pair of flip-flops that he could wear to protect his feet. We may not be going on any long hikes over the weekend, but they would be perfect to wear to the swimming hole on the Santa Ynez River. Wondering if there are things to do (besides remember your child’s shoes.) to make your first time out in your new RV go more smoothly? Read on.

Making a list is probably your most important step. Make copies and give them to all your readers in the family so they can help pack up. Divide your lists into categories: kitchen, meals, bathroom, outdoor activities (bikes, balls, firewood, etc.), indoor activites (games, movies, etc.), pets, family member A, B, C, etc., and don’t forget to include yourself. Start packing a few days ahead of time to avoid the last minute rush. Cross things off as you pack them and just before you pull out of your driveway, take a quick glance at your list to make sure you have everything.

Practice Parking or Driving If you are worried about backing up or driving the RV around, take it out for some practice without the family. It’s a lot easier to practice without kids playing (or arguing) in the back seat. Choose a Saturday or Sunday morning when the roads are less crowded, and drive around a bit. Find a large parking lot with plenty of empty space and back it up a few times. You’ll be surprised at how much easier it gets with a little practice. It won’t be long until you feel like a pro.

Research Test Run Most RVs are so easy to set up you could do it in your sleep, but it doesn’t hurt to do a little test run. Set up your RV in your driveway before you head out. In fact, you may want to do this a few times if you are feeling nervous. Better to figure out how to work the jacks before getting to a campsite after a long drive when you (and everyone else) may be tired. If your RV has slides, always do a slide check when setting or packing up to make sure nothing gets smashed in the slide. Trust us on this one.

A little research ahead of time goes a long way. We are all for spontaneity, but for your first trip in your RV I suggest you have reservations. Double-check that the campground has the amenities you want. If you want electricity, water and sewer, be sure to ask for a full hookup site. You can even ask for a pullthrough site if you are not quite ready for a back-in site. While you are on the Internet, do a quick search for things to do in the area and take a few notes (I take screenshots on my phone and save them to my camera roll). This way if you get to your destination and suddenly realize you don’t have cell phone reception, you’ll still have an idea of what’s in the area. Also don’t forget to double-check your route on the GPS before pulling out of the driveway.

Wednesday, July 6, was a beautiful, warm and sunny day. At 9:30 a.m., a group of seniors from the Glen Cove Senior Center set out by bus for the marina at Bay Shore. At the dock stood the Lauren Kristy, an old but lovely restored rear paddle wheel boat. The seniors boarded the boat, climbed the stairs to the upper deck and Captain Mike weighed anchor at 11 a.m. Off we cruised, at a gentle pace, around the waters of the Great South Bay. As we pulled out of the marina we could see several Fire Island ferries taking summer vacationers to their weekend retreats. We passed

Brightwaters where we could see the Brightwaters Canal cutting a path through the land on its journey to Montauk Highway. We glided under the Robert Moses Causeway and Bridge, formerly the Captree Bridge, built in 1954. We passed by Oak and Captree Islands, viewing several species of water birds, including two osprey nests filled with baby chicks. We saw people digging for oysters in the middle of the bay since the bay’s depth is only between six and 15 feet. Captain’s mates Owen, Patrick, Trish and Robin served lunch and refreshments, ensuring that we were well-fed and well-hydrated throughout the cruise. On the starboard side we could see the Jones Beach Water Tower and the outdoor theater.

Captain Mike navigated along the State Boat Channel on our way to the Fire Island Lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in 1852 on the western end of the island. Over the decades, the west side of the island was built up, adding an additional five miles to the Fire Island shoreline. The captain informed us that tours of the lighthouse are given every day of the year except Christmas Day. Visitors can climb the 182 steps to the observation deck, but not the additional 10 steps to the beacon. The original Fresnel lamp is housed in a building on the lighthouse grounds. As we turned back to port, we passed Saltaire and Kismet, the westernmost villages on Fire Island. Both villages were badly damaged by

the hurricane of 1938. In Saltaire, 150 houses were destroyed or severely damaged. The hurricane struck on Sept. 21, 1938. Four caretakers lost their lives. Had it struck on a weekend the death toll would have been much greater. All too soon, we were docking at the Bay Shore Marina once more. We boarded our bus with Tilman, our capable driver, getting us safely back at the Senior Center by 3 p.m. Thanks to Jenny, our activities director, and her assistant Gina, we had a wonderful time and can’t wait for our next excursion. A local teen has made it his mission to bring smiles and spread hope to those who could use some cheer. At a recent Bingo game, patients at Glen Cove Hospital’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit took a trip back to the 1960s, thanks to the Locust Valley chapter of Hippies for Hope. About 30 smiling patients, family members and staff received a one-of-a-kind, colorful tie dyed tee shirt from the charitable organization. Hippies for Hope is a grassroots organization working to better the education of girls in Africa, and at the same time, bring hope and good cheer to children and adults in hospitals. The chapter’s founder, Christian Barakat, an incoming senior at Friends Academy who lives in Muttontown, sells tie dyed shirts, many of which are created in bulk in his backyard, at local festivals and fairs. The funds raised are donated to two schools in Tanzania and the other half of the sales buy shirts to give to hospitals. The group’s motto: “wear a shirt, give a smile, spread hope” certainly shined through at Glen Cove’s Rehab Unit. Barakat plans on selling t-shirts at the Sea Cliff Mini Mart and at the Locust Valley Harvest Festival this fall and they can also be purchased online. Jason Surface is putting his body to the test in an effort to help those who no longer have that ability. The former Glen Cove resident is racing in the Ironman Lake Placid on July 24 under Team Fox in honor of his mother, Charmian Surface, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease. “I started running triathlons in 2014 and decided to run an Ironman in honor of my Iron mother,” said Surface, 49. He now lives in Saguache, CO, and chose the Lake Placid Ironman since his mother and family still live on Long Island. He said that his mother “has lived a remarkable life” that started in Leeds, England. A professional ballet dancer and actress, she performed on Broadway in the 1950s, appearing in My Fair Lady. “She met my father Herb at that Charmian time, who was also appearing as a singer in My Fair Lady,” said Surface. Surface “Both my parents left the theater to raise a family in Glen Cove.” His mother taught ballet and opened the Dance Studio on Glen Street in the 1970s, then moved to a larger space Glen Cove Avenue, renaming the studio to Charmian’s Center. “She dedicated herself to the advancement of dance and touched countless lives in the community. After retiring from dance she decided to become a Pilates instructor in her 60s,” said Surface. He said she sold Charmian’s Center in 1996 or 1997, then became a second generation Pilates instructor—meaning she trained under Romana Kryzanowska, who trained under Joseph Pilates. She taught Pilates for more than a decade in a renovated garage on her property until she retired two years ago, at almost 78 years old, due to the debilitation of

Parkinson’s disease. “I have watched this beautiful vibrant woman deteriorate to the point of requiring 24-hour care in a skilled nursing facility. She now spends most of her time in a wheel chair and also suffers from the onset of dementia,” said Surface. There is no known cure for Parkinson’s disease, a chronic, degenerative neurological disorder that affects five million people worldwide. By racing for Team Fox, The Michael J. Fox Foundation’s (MJFF) grassroots community fundraising program, Surface is helping to raise funds and awareness for Parkinson’s disease research. All funds raised through Team Fox go directly to MJFF to further its mission to accelerate the delivery of life-changing treatments, and ultimately a cure, to people with Parkinson’s disease. Surface has been on a strict training schedule for the past six months, training six to seven days a week for up to eight hours a day. He spends at least three days per week on each discipline, either swimming, bicycling or running. The higher altitude he trains at could put him at an advantage, though he’s a little concerned about the humidity. Still, he’s looking forward to being back in New York and completing the race. He originally hoped his mother would be able to make the trip to Lake Placid to see him race, but her health is not up to it.
