100 TH ANNIVERSARY Dodge-Thomas Spans Two Centuries In Glen Cove BY JILL NOSSA

JNOSSA@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

Nestled in between houses on Franklin Avenue, right off of Highland Road, sits the Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, a building that has occupied the same address for more than 120 years. Now run by the Minutoli family, the business has an intriguing history—believed to be the oldest continuously run business of its kind on Long Island and possibly in New York state, it has mainly been a family business. Founded in 1816 by a wheelright, the business gradually evolved into a furniture business, then a funeral home, out of necessity and consumer demand. “He made such precision wagon wheels that a farmer from Brookville came up to him and said, ‘My wife died. Can you make a coffin for her? She’s this long’ and held up his hands to demonstrate,” said Guy Minutoli, who has owned the business since 1981. And a new type of business was born. The Dodge family owned a furniture store at 99 Glen St. The current funeral home, built in 1894 by Herbert K. Dodge, was the warehouse where he made the furniture, and he lived in the house next door where Minutoli lives now. “Back then, he was the only funeral director around and did all the work for Sea Cliff, the Brookvilles, Mill Neck, Bayville. There was no one else around,” said Minutoli. Minutoli explained that the business was run

by generations of Dodges until George Thomas began working for him and became a partner in 1965. He retired in 1981, when he sold the business to Minutoli. “Years ago, there were no funeral homes,” said Minutoli. “This was the first in New York state. They used to have funerals in their home or church. It started when someone wanted a funeral, but was not affiliated with a church, and they were able to accommodate the family.” While the name remains Dodge-Thomas, there are no longer any Dodge or Thomas family members left. However, it is still a family business, run by Minutoli, his two children Gregg Minutoli and Jeanine Sand, and his son-in-law, Blake Sand. Like the first Dodge, Minutoli also fell into the

business gradually, by driving a limousine after college due to the scarcity of jobs and doing trade work for funeral homes. He began to like the field and went back to school to get a master’s degree in mortuary science from American Academy McAllister Institute on Park Ave in New York City, the same school his own children and son-in-law later attended. “I like that you’re in a position to help people in a time of need where they really do need the help,” said Minutoli. Jeanine Sand said that she was originally planning to go into finance until her father approached her about going into the family business. “I was a little hesitant, but then when I started

to deal with the families, it’s really what I gravitated towards,” said Sand. “It’s extremely gratifying to know that you’re helping people in a time of need. And you really get close with the families, so it really seemed so much more to me than just another job. That really appealed to me.” With such a strong sense of caring and a longstanding reputation, business has remained steady. They said a lot of their business comes to them through

Still, funeral directors are on call 24/7, so the job requires patience and compassion. “What I try to do is give personal service to them,” said Minutoli. “It’s about being available to people, day and night.” “People ask how I can deal with such a somber and morbid business, but it’s truly not,” said Sand. “It’s very warm. We deal with wonderful families here in our communities, and you really notice that, between all the different families, the different cultures, the different ethnicities, different socioeconomic backgrounds, everyone is the same at the core. It’s about the family and the love that they have.”

100 TH ANNIVERSARY Ferry service began smoothly on the sunny morning of Monday, July 10. (Photo by Tab Hauser)

Smooth Start For Ferry Summer service offers commuters alternative mode of travel BY JILL NOSSA

JNOSSA@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

A hundred years ago, mass travel by sea was on its way out, with trains and automobiles beginning to dominate. Prior to the demise, steamboat travel was incredibly popular and in fact helped spur the growth of Glen Cove and Sea Cliff. This summer, with the track work being done at Penn Station, the necessity of travel by water versus land could be the dawn of a new era of ferry service on the North Shore. “It’s a great opportunity for us as a trial run,” said Glen Cove Mayor Reggie Spinello. The service, operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority/Long Island Rail Road, began on July 10 and will run through Sept. 1, with ferries departing at 6:35 a.m. traveling to West 34th Street in Manhattan and at 6:10 a.m. traveling to Wall Street. The LIRR is honoring monthly and weekly pass holders and offers an alternative mode of transport, with each ride taking about 45 minutes. The City of Glen Cove completed

construction of its ferry terminal last year and held off on its search for a ferry operator until after construction of the first phase of the waterfront development commences. However, officials see this as the perfect opportunity to gauge rider interest, work out kinks and find a permanent operator for service. "The city intends to re-release a Request For Proposal (RFP) for a ferry service operator this year, with the intent to have start-up of service no later than early 2019," said deputy mayor Barbara A. Peebles, who is also the executive director of the Glen Cove Industrial Development Agency. For the time being, the service is being brought back by the LIRR, which interestingly, is partly responsible for the initial demise of ferry travel to the North Shore. “In 1835, Long Island was characterized by woodlands, meadows and farms,” said Dave Nieri of the

Glen Cove History Committee. “Travel along the Island’s few roads was on foot, horseback or horsedrawn carriage. Vessels moved both people and freight along the water highway that is Long Island Sound. By the early 1800s, in addition to farming, the village was producing lumber from its sawmill and mining clay along its shores, for export to New York City.” In 1829, local entrepreneur William Weeks and other businessmen formed a company to build and operate a steamboat wharf further north of the Garvie wharf, which became known as “The Landing” (located near where the breakwater meets the beach in today’s Morgan Park). “This wharf soon became Musquito Cove’s primary destination for passengers and freight,” said Nieri. “Passenger service to and from Manhattan greatly expanded throughout the years preceding the Civil War.

Other steamboat landings were established at Sea Cliff, Glenwood and Roslyn, and New York City residents took excursions to rural Long Island to escape the hustle and bustle of Manhattan.” The Long Island Railroad was formed in 1834, but tracks for the Oyster Bay branch of the line didn’t reach Glen Cove until 1867. According to Nieri, Weeks opened the Pavilion Hotel in 1829 adjacent to the steamboat wharf to provide lodging for these many visitors. It eventually became a resort hotel accommodating up to 300 guests. At 50 cents for a round trip ticket, New York City residents filled the steamers to journey to Long Island. Other hotels, inns and boarding houses sprang up just blocks away from the Pavilion Hotel, and the entire area later became known as “The Landing” because of the steamboat landing’s influence on the economic life of Glen Cove. “The community of Glen Cove grew significantly in the latter

100 TH ANNIVERSARY FERRY from page 8 half of the 19th century as a result of regular Long Island Sound steamboat service,” said Nieri. “The Creek became a hub of manufacturing in 1855 when the Duryea Starch Works (the world’s largest cornstarch manufacturing plant) was established here. The passenger steamers grew larger and become more numerous until after the Civil War, when the arrival of the Long Island Railroad to Glen Cove in 1867 provided a second reliable method of travel. Several major steamboat disasters around the end of the 19th century and the opening of the East River railroad tunnels in 1905 ultimately made the railroad supreme and led to the eventual demise of the great Long Island Sound steamboats.” In 1932, 101 years after the steamboat wharf was constructed, Morgan Memorial Park opened to the public, encompassing the former sites of the steamer landing and the Pavilion Hotel. Dedicated to the memory of Jane Norton Grew Morgan, the wife of banker

A painting of the Seawanhaka steamer by James Bard.

J.P. Morgan, Jr., the park also memorializes the century of the steamboats that grew Glen Cove. For a short time, the Millennium, owned by Fox Navigation, served

commuters traveling to Manhattan. The island’s first high-speed ferry service took 45 minutes from the Garvies Point Road terminal in Glen Cove to Pier 11, a block from

the New York Stock Exchange. This ferry service was instrumental in helping to save lives during 9/11, but the service stopped a year after the tragedy, in November 2002.

100 TH ANNIVERSARY

The Newspaper Lady On the Record BY ZEFY CHRISTOPOULOS

GLENCOVE@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

When I think about it, my career at Anton Community Newspapers as editor/reporter with the Glen Cove Record Pilot began during a Glen Cove City Council meeting held in the former City Hall/Court building on Bridge Street (currently the Glen Cove Police Department headquarters). I found myself seated next to Maggie Polk, who at the time was the editor of the Record Pilot; I was a reporter with the Record Pilot’s competitor. Both of us were covering a rather contentious, campaign-season city council meeting. Sure enough, we struck up a conversation when Maggie, pointing to my business card, asked me if I was Greek. I said yes, that’s my heritage. She responded, “My

www.glencoverecordpilot.com

daughter married a Greek and is living on a Greek island.” A lasting friendship was founded based upon our respect for one another and the English language, lively political conversations and, most of all, the friendship lasted because of our love for Glen Cove. Upon her retirement in 1991, Maggie recommended me to Mr. Karl Anton, the publisher/ owner of Anton Community Newspapers. I interviewed with him and he immediately hired me. Mr. Anton was emphatic that the Record Pilot cover only local news. I promised him I would and my 10-year career with the Record Pilot was launched. The Record Pilot office was located within Glen Floors on Glen Street, which meant I became part

Mansions Of The Gold Coast

In the mid- to late 1800s, wealthy folks flocked to Glen Cove for refuge and built large estates on sprawling properties. Residents of the Gold Coast included members of the Pratt family, J.P. Morgan Jr., W. E. Burton, Henry Clay Folger, Alexander C. Humphrey, F.W. Woolworth and Richard S. Reynolds. While some of the grand mansions still exist, others have long since been demolished. 100 TH ANNIVERSARY NEWSPAPER LADY from page 14 of the Capobianco and Nelson extended family. My Glen Floors family offered me great history lessons about our city. And quite a few jokes...the head-shaking, corny kind. Now that I think about it, once you become active in any Glen Cove organization, school activity or local business, it’s practically certain that you will make friends. And those friends who are born and raised in Glen Cove are a treasure trove of our city’s history which I would include in many of my news stories. I learned from David Zatlin that the current building that is home to the First Baptist Church on Continental was originally the Congregation Tifereth Israel house of worship and I remember noting that in a story. I first learned about a football wedding from Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Troffa who came to me to announce their 50th wedding anniversary. The remarkable and heroic stories of Glen Cove’s men and women in uniform—those

Former editor Zefy Christopoulos covered local news for a decade. who came home and those who did not—were provided by Angelo “Cappy” Capobianco. He was the one who told me about Anthony and Rose Marangiello: his survival of the Bataan death march and her being a “Rosie the Riveter” in World War II. Cappy also told me the story of how two Glen Cove soldiers, both from the Orchard neighborhood, amazingly found each other when they were both in a POW

camp and when they returned home to Glen Cove, they remained friends for life. It was Vincent “Jimmy” Suozzi who led the way in finding the deed to the Coles School back when parents and the Coles School neighborhood mobilized to keep the building as a school. The story I wrote was as much about keeping the building as a school as it was about Jimmy Suozzi finding the deed after an

extensive search. Glen City Hall (and my drop box) was eventually relocated to temporary space at 15 Glen St., right across the street from my office, which made picking up press releases and photos (hard copy photos at the time—digital wasn’t available yet) quick and easy. As soon as copies of the latest edition of the Record Pilot were delivered to my office, I would bring a few to city hall, and during one of my drop-off runs, the building department administrator, Neil McNaughton, (now happily retired), named me “The Newspaper Lady.” I loved it. I soon realized that to be designated the official newspaper of Glen Cove, which meant prestige and revenue for the Record Pilot, I had to find visible office space in downtown Glen Cove. City Hall again was being relocated to its current location, a transformed bank building, and prime space became available in 15 Glen St., ground floor, with a window facing

100 TH ANNIVERSARY NEWSPAPER LADY from page 18 the street. The window served me well. People would peak inside and I would tell them to come in for conversation, story ideas and sometimes just a friendly ear. I had many headline moments during my tenure with the Record Pilot. A fund raiser for the Glen Cove Youth Bureau was held at the Killenworth Mansion, the Russian Federation summer residence on Dosoris Lane. I had the privilege of attending as a reporter and meeting Russia’s current Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, who at the time was the Russian Ambassador at the United Nations. Dennis Tito, who funded his own trip into space, came to Glen Cove and wow, did he have a story to tell. Dennis, by the way, is Rose and Anthony Marangiello’s nephew. Meeting Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Hilary Clinton was interesting. They each separately visited Glen Cove for press events focused on the environment and cleanup of the waterfront. I remember meeting New York Times photographer Vic Delucia when we were both perched and ready to take pictures of the Wah Chang (LiTungsten) smokestack demolition. It was wonderful to learn he lived in Glen Cove. We were able to share quite a few stories whenever we ran into each other at the supermarket. Speaking of supermarket...I am so proud that, to this day, it takes me at least two hours to finish grocery shopping. It’s because I had the unique

opportunity to meet so many of my neighbors while I was with the Record Pilot. My byline was on stories about school board meetings, board of zoning appeals meetings, planning board meetings and city council meetings. Feature stories on our local veterans, children succeeding, philanthropic events and individual outstanding achievements always made the paper. Needless to say, I was quite pleased when the New York Press Association awarded me second place for my coverage of educational matters in Glen Cove. I was humbled when my story and photo were included in the New York Press Association’s book published in tribute to all who perished on Sept. 11, 2001. That day was a beautiful Tuesday morning, puffy clouds in the sky. It was Primary Day and I was on deadline. This meant I was in my office at 7:30 a.m. getting all last minute copy ready for delivery to Mineola and then I had to be back in Glen Cove for a “hold the presses” story on the election. I had the radio on, tuned to 1010 WINS. As I was packing up to leave Glen Cove, I heard the words “a plane has crashed into the World Trade Center.” I remember thinking that it must have been a small plane and please God, let’s hope for the best. Another thought that crossed my mind is that the Glen Cove High School Class of 2001 (my son’s class) had their prom at Windows on the World just two months ago.

As the day’s tragic events unfolded, I first located my family and made sure they were safe. I then drove to Mineola and entered the Anton Community Newspapers production offices. It was around 10 a.m. One of our page designers was being comforted by our colleagues. Her sister-inlaw was a flight attendant in the first plane that hit the World Trade Center. The Great Neck editor was frantic because her daughter was on a plane out of Washington, D.C. The advertising executive just got word that her daughter just gave birth to her first child. My fellow editors and I were trying to get as much information about the World Trade Center/ Pentagon/Pennsylvania situation as possible while making every attempt to help each other understand what was happening. I was notified that city hall was going to be a help/comfort center for evacuees transported by high speed ferry from downtown Manhattan. The first ferry would leave Glen Cove with doctors, first responders, nurses and our EMS volunteers and then return with survivors who would be transported by bus to City Hall to contact their loved ones and somehow get help arranging a way to get home. I left Mineola and drove to the Glen Cove ferry terminal, reporter’s notebook in hand and ready to assist. As soon as I arrived at the terminal, I put down the notebook and got to work helping in any way

I could. I knew I would not have to take notes or remember names to write the story that I was now living and experiencing first hand. At one point, I noticed Carmine Anzalone, a city hall employee I would talk to on my newspaper delivery rounds, sitting on a bench. He was distraught, sobbing. I asked him if I could somehow help him. Carmine told me his son worked in downtown Manhattan and he hadn’t heard from him. Carmine was convinced that his son wasn’t coming home to Glen Cove. The best I could do was to sit with my friend, hold his hand and try to comfort him and urge him to have faith. The first ferry came with evacuees and the news was disheartening. The second ferry arrived a bit later with more people bringing catastrophic updates. And it brought Carmine Anzalone’s son, covered with dust, frightened, but home safe and sound. There is so much more to tell but I think that would take up too much space and many gallons of ink. My experience as the Record Pilot editor and reporter, the friends I made at work and in my hometown and the new career path that was presented to me because of my Newspaper Lady decade are priceless. I am truly indebted to the late Maggie Polk and to the late Karl V. Anton, Jr. for having confidence in me and allowing me to add my byline to the Glen Cove Record Pilot. Happy Anniversary, Glen Cove Record Pilot. Here’s to the next 100 years of headlines.

100 TH ANNIVERSARY

Women In Glen Cove’s History BY ANTONIA PETRASH

GLENCOVE@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

The early years of the publication of the Glen Cove Record Pilot marked a time of immense change for all of society, but especially in the lives of the women who called Glen Cove home. In 1917, after 69 years of petitioning, campaigning, marching and struggle, New York women finally won the right to vote, three years ahead of the rest of the nation. Glen Cove women of all ages and social strata assumed an important role in that fight. The Tiny Tea Room on Glen Street hosted monthly meetings of the Equal Suffrage Club, where suffragists listened to speeches by well-known leaders such as Ida Bunce Sammis from Huntington and Harriet Burton Laidlaw from Sands Point. The Pratt sisters-in-law, Helen Sherman Pratt (Killenworth), and Florence Gibb Pratt, (The Braes, now the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture) contributed to the suffrage cause with both time and money, and could take real pride in its success. An historic marker documenting their efforts is soon to be installed. The Pratt women also gave generously to other philanthropic causes; they donated the land for the library and the post office, and provided funds for the construction of Lincoln House (now the Boys and Girls Club), the hospital and various parks. Throughout the 1930s, other local women established the Glen Cove Community Chest, which contributed to nine local organizations, including the Orchard House, the Lincoln House and the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. In 1931, Glen Cove women collected funds to purchase an iron lung for the Glen Cove Hospital. Glen Cove women gave freely and generously of their time and their money. With the outbreak of World War II women took their place contributing to the war effort, leaving their homes and families to work in factories. Rose Suozzi lived in Brooklyn and began working in Republic Aircraft in Bethpage in 1942. She later married Gaspar Buffa, a Marine who served at Guadalcanal and Midway; after the war the couple moved to Glen Cove and raised their family of five children. Post-war business flourished in Glen Cove, and women were at the forefront with the emergence of retail establishments of all kinds, most of which were family affairs. Brigatti’s Fine Foods on School Street was owned and managed by Alan Gengarelly and his wife Carol; Bernsteins Men’s Wear on Glen Street was owned and run by Blanche and Len Bernstein. London Jewelers was owned and managed by husband and wife Fran and Mayer Udell, and is still today under the ownership/ management of their son Mark, and his wife Candy. Singer’s Department Store, Eisenstadt’s Hardware, the Cove Delicatessen and many

Mary Ann Holzkamp became the first woman mayor of Glen Cove, in 2002. other businesses were successful because of the labors of both husbands and wives working together. Russian immigrant Clara Blank started her own dress-finishing factory in Glen Cove around 1932, and ran it successfully through the 1950s. Perhaps she was empathetic to women’s causes—the factory hired only women. Over the years Glen Cove women can claim many “firsts,” political and otherwise. Renowned orchestra conductor Clara Burling Roesch Herdt was the first woman to win a conducting fellowship at the Julliard Graduate School of Music. In 1980, she spent six months at the Beijing Opera House, the first American ever to be invited to fill that position. Florence Gibb Pratt was the first woman elected to the New York State Board of Regents in 1927. Her sister-in-law Ruth Baker Pratt was the first woman elected as a New York City Alderman in 1925, representing the Silk Stocking District in Manhattan. She later served four years in the House of Representatives. In 2006, Glen Cove resident Christine Quinn became the first woman to hold the position of Speaker of the New York City Council; she ran for mayor of the City of New York in 2013. In 1951, Katherine Fisk Drury became the first woman to run for the city council in Glen Cove. Although she lost, she paved the way for others; Ann Gold was elected to the city council in 1980, and at least six women follower her; Pamela Panzenbeck serves on the city council today. And Glen Cove’s first and only woman mayor Mary Ann Holzkamp held the office from 2002 to 2005. Glen Cove women set new precedents for gender equality in 1984 when members of the Glen Cove Educational Secretaries Association

filed 103 sex discrimination complaints with the New York State Division of Human Rights. The complaints represented a wide range of gender-related abuses, including pay inequity and demoralizing working conditions. In 1987, the women won $270,000 in retroactive pay increases, professional advancement benefits, the right to have wage equity part of their labor contract and most importantly the right to be treated with respect. Breaking new ground for women in the religious arena, Betsy Simpson holds the position of woman minister at the First Presbyterian Church in Glen Cove, and Rabbi Dr. Janet B. Liss joins student cantor Alex Kurland in an all-woman slate at the North Country Reform Temple on Crescent Beach Road. Successful singer/songwriter Ashanti Douglas put Glen Cove on the map with her phenomenal musical and acting career successes. And for more than 50 years the Morgan Park Summer Music Festival has brought free concerts to Glen Cove under the supervision of Marguerite Suozzi. Although she has stepped aside from a management role, her influence is still felt in the quality entertainment the concert series brings to Glen Cove every summer Sunday evening. The City of Glen Cove is a relatively small community of less than 30,000 people. Yet its citizens, especially its women, have had a disproportionately impressive influence on the world in general. From winning the vote, to building hospitals, libraries and parks, to serving their nation, working for equal rights and bringing us quality entertainment, they have enriched both their city and their nation through their talents and labors. We can be justifiably proud of them all.

Consumer tastes and interests change with the season and nowhere is this more evident than in advertisements. For as long as there have been goods to sell, people have wanted to know about the latest products—and get them at bargain prices. While the products and prices have changed over the century, print ads are still essential to both small local businesses and customers.

Celebrating A Century Of News BY JILL NOSSA

JNOSSA@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

Nearly 100 years ago, in 1918, Glen Cove became an independent city and this newspaper was there to report on it. However, the founding of Glen Cove dates back nearly 350 years, first known as Musketa Cove before its name

was changed to Glen Cove. And, newspapers in Glen Cove have a history that spans back even farther than the establishment of this paper. Over the years, papers were bought, sold and merged. The Glen Cove Gazette began in the 1850s and lasted through 1872.

see CELEBRATING on page 34

In 1984, Karl V. Anton, pictured at left, purchased the Glen Cove Record Pilot along with seven other North Shore weeklies owned by Community Newspapers. While the newspaper has had many iterations over the years, Glen Cove itself was known as Musketa Cove, Musquito Cove and Mosquito Cove ("Place of the Rushes" by Native Americans) when Joseph Carpenter settled in the area in 1668. The name changed to Glen Cove in 1834.

A Look At The Landing Of The Past

In a past era, the beaches of Glen Cove were not just used by residents; they were a destination for city folks who wished to escape the concrete jungle. The Landing, with the Steamboat Dock and Pavilion Hotel, was bustling and thriving in the summer months.

100 TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATING from page 30

The Glen Cove Echo was one of the earliest papers, established in 1875 and lasting until 1960, when it eventually became a part of what is now the Glen Cove Record Pilot.

The Glen Cove Echo began on June 19, 1875, and ended in 1960. By 1923, The City Record and Glen Cove News combined and The Glen Cove Record, Oyster Bay Township News added the Glen Cove Advance on April 16, 1936, becoming the Glen Cove RecordAdvance in March of 1937. The Record Advance was founded in 1917 and later included the Sea Cliff News. By 1953, the Glen Cove Record and Oyster Bay Pilot combined, becoming the Record and Pilot. It later also included The Echo, The Spotlight and East Norwich Enterprise. By 1982, it was known as the Record Pilot and at various points added and dropped the “Glen Cove.” Still, it has remained “the voice of Brookville, Glen Cove, Glen Head, Glenwood Landing, Locust Valley, Old Brookville and Sea Cliff.” In 1984, Karl V. Anton Jr. purchased Community Newspapers, a group of eight weekly newspapers that included the Glen Cove Record-Pilot. At the time of the sale, Anton was the president and founder of Van Son Holland Ink

Corporation of America, a worldwide distributor of lithographic printing inks based in Mineola. He also founded the weekly newspaper Merrick Life. Community Newspapers eventually became Anton Community Newspapers and is now Anton Media Group. Anton’s wife, Angela Susan Anton, took over the role of publisher upon his death in 2000.

Soul Sound Revue brings its high-energy stage show to the Village Square Plaza in Glen Cove on July 21, at 7:30 p.m.

Motown Sounds In Glen Cove BY RECORD PILOT STAFF

GLENCOVE@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

There will be dancin’ in the streets when the Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) invites The Soul Sound Revue to bring their high-energy stage show to the Village Square Plaza in Glen Cove on July 21, at 7:30 p.m. A perennial favorite at the annual Downtown Sounds Concert Series, this Motown tribute party band’s high-energy performance is traditionally one of the highlights of the year. Soul Sound Revue is a show/dance act that specializes in the best of the Motown, Philly soul and disco sounds. The group consists of dynamic male and female singers, a powerful horn section and a driving four-piece band. Their playlist includes many of the most popular songs from classic groups of the ‘60s through ‘80s such as The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops and The Supremes. In their career, they have performed alongside The Temptations, The Chi-Lites, Wilson Pickett and The Marvelettes. They are booked as a steady act at the

Drummer Charlese Evans Mohegan Sun Casino Resort in Uncasville, CT. Soul Sound Revue’s 2017 performance will mark the ninth time they have appeared in the 20-year history of Downtown Sounds. Audience ranks have grown each time and this fact was not lost on manager and keyboard player Mark Varese.

“This was the most fantastic crowd I’ve ever seen at an event,” said Varese after exiting the stage following last year’s extravaganza. “Downtown Sounds gets bigger every year. There’s nothing like it!” Presenting sponsors for Downtown Sounds 2017 are: the City of Glen Cove, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Garvies Point, Glen Cove Hospital, Northwell Health, Kimco Realty, Harvest Power Solar, American Paving & Masonry, Comfort Dental at Glen Cove and the Downtown Cafe. Free parking for Downtown Sounds is available at the nearby municipal garage. Be sure to bring your lawn chair with you. In the case of rain, the advertised acts will perform at the Wunsch Arts Center at Robert M. Finley Middle School on Forest Avenue. For more information, call the Glen Cove BID, 516-759-6570, or visit www.glencovedowntown.org or www. downtownsoundslive.org. The weekly music series has been in existence for 20 years. The Glen Cove BID started in 1997 as a way to bring people downtown. In the early years, the series was Jazz in the Square and has grown and evolved into a high-caliber music festival.

EDITORIAL: IN OUR OPINION Keeping Readers Informed Shortly after I moved to Glen Cove eight years ago, I sent my resume to the Glen Cove Record Pilot and was almost immediately hired as a reporter. I started covering board of education and city council meetings, as well as other events, seeing it as an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the community I had recently decided to call home. I soon learned about the school budget process and how important its passage is to the district, year after year; I found out that Glen Cove seems to have a parade for every occasion— and no holiday goes unrecognized. I learned that there are many talented people here and that the North Shore has a rich history. When I was offered the position of

editor in January 2012, I was thrilled to be able to have a more rooted role in the paper, one that has expanded and strengthened my connections and knowledge of the community. This area is filled with people who care about the community and are willing to step up and do what they think is best, whether it’s fighting against overdevelopment, protesting the closing of the hospital, devoting precious free time to becoming a school board member, PTA president or fundraising chair or simply helping to plant flowers or clean up the beaches. There are so many volunteer organizations, youth organizations, nonprofits, activities for families, local business advocates and programs that give back to the community. I believe that the role of this paper is to both inform residents about what

is happening locally and to give a voice to all aspects of the community. Without a weekly local paper, organizations that do charity work, such as the Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions clubs might not be recognized. People might not know about the important work done by SAFE, Inc. in attempting to combat substance abuse, or all of the happenings at the Senior Center that help keep the senior community active and vibrant. The children who go above and beyond to start a fundraiser, the writers, musicians and artists who are making strides in their endeavors and the people who care enough about an outlet for adult athletics to form kickball, soccer and pickleball leagues—their stories have been told in this paper. When new businesses open, we do our best to tell readers about them.

Looking through the archives while compiling this anniversary issue has been insightful and overwhelming because there has been so much news over the past century and so many interesting developments. But throughout the history of this paper, it’s been clear that residents care about many of the same things: who the candidates are for local elections and how those elections turn out; development within the downtown area; waterfront development; school budgets...these have been big headlines since the dawn of the paper. I’m proud to be part of an institution that has kept readers informed about everything from what resolutions have passed at City Hall to what’s happening at the library, and that is what this paper will continue to do. —Jill Nossa

pictures that highlight the accomplishments of so many talented and caring individuals in our community and for that we say, thank you. As the Record Pilot celebrates its centennial anniversary I also think it is important to recognize our area’s centenarians who may have been among the paper’s first customers. At our recent Glen Cove Senior Recognition Day we honored a remarkable group of individuals

who have all celebrated their 100th birthday milestones. Please join me in congratulating Maryann Bernard, Rudy Bodd, Mildred Hulse, Hannah Kantor, Anne Kozinsky, Marjorie Louer, Irene Mencuccini, Millie Palmenteri, Angelina Troffa, Josefa “Ely” Vega and the late Irving Kamrat on living their lives to the fullest. On behalf of our city and the Glen Cove City Council, I want to congratulate the Glen Cove Record Pilot for

being a vital part of our community. We look forward to reading your news for the next 100 years and hope you will join us next year in celebrating the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Glen Cove along with the 350th anniversary of our founding. Happy 100th anniversary. —Reginald A. Spinello, Mayor

Why Readers Love This Community

“Glen Cove was a great place to grow up and later to raise my family. The rich diversity and natural beauty of our city is hard to come by. I feel privileged to live here and to represent Glen Cove in Nassau County.” —Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton “Growing up, I always saw the Record Pilot around our house and started reading it around high school. I even used to read my father’s clippings from when he was city court judge and mayor in the 1940s and 50s. If you want to know what is going on in and around town, whether it is special events, local government, letters to the editor or just general happenings, the Record Pilot was always a great way to monitor the pulse of the community. Happy 100th anniversary!” —Rep. Tom Suozzi “My paternal grandfather came from Italy when he was only 15 years old in the mid-1880s, settled in “The Orchard” on Grove Street, had five children and 14 grandchildren, and a successful life through his hard work and discipline. He taught us the importance of hard work and, above

all, family and faith. I came back to Glen Cove after four years in Ohio for an undergraduate degree, one year in Indiana where I studied for a master’s and where I met my wife (who passed in February 2015), and 27 months in the Army on active duty in Germany with my wife and two sons. We returned to Glen Cove for my family and all the great amenities it offered. A friendly atmosphere; a community golf course; baseball, soccer, basketball and tennis fields for all to enjoy; great restaurants; wonderful beaches; activities for young and old alike; an

administration that sought the best for all people; churches of many religions that represent the diverse ethnicity of the city; great food; the “Best Feast in the East”; and on and on. In Glen Cove, my wife and I raised six wonderful and successful children, who have blessed us with 12 grandchildren.” —Anthony Anzalone, commander American Legion Post 76 “Glen Cove is an area where my wife’s parents, my wife and I have lived for many years. I feel safe here, especially now with so many new developments; the city is growing stronger than ever before. Everything you need is here, many big companies and franchises are coming to Glen Cove. I’ve raised my two daughters here and they now attend school in the public school district. I am proud to be a Glen Cover and that’s why I give back by donating my time to the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce. Now it is my duty to develop new leaders and make them a better version of themselves through my Kids Martial Arts program at GMA Martial Arts and keep the adults fit with my iLovekickbxoing.com program.” —Hender Alvarado, president, Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce “Having grown up in Glen Cove, it’s easy to take for granted the beautiful surroundings I was lucky enough to grow up around. Having traveled all around the world with my band, Antigone Rising, there’s nothing better than coming back home to play shows for hometown audiences at Morgan Park. The breathtaking view is unrivaled to any place on Earth and we get to have it every day living here in Glen Cove!” —Kristen Henderson, Antigone Rising “I couldn’t have asked for a better place to grow up than Glen Cove. The deep sense of community, the beauty of the beaches and being right

“The idea of moving to the ‘suburbs’ from Brooklyn was a bit of a traumatic one for me. I was afraid of boredom fueled by row upon row of ‘little boxes on the hillside’ as the song goes. Instead what we found was a charming little town, with a New England vibe, filled with a wide variety of houses in many styles along with the natural beauty of the coastline, replete with picture perfect sunsets over a lovely town beach. The people we encountered in Sea Cliff were all extremely welcoming and we quickly developed an amazing circle of friends. Our kids love it here and we feel blessed to be able raise children in this most nurturing of communities.” —Roger Street Friedman “Glen Cove offers the conveniences and cultural opportunities of a larger city, while still retaining the smalltown ‘vibe.’ I appreciate that so many businesses in the area are mom-andpop like ours, so shopping local has taken on a new meaning for me.” —Rebecca Forster, co-director, Long Island Academy of Fine Art “I love the diversity of the people in Glen Cove. We are a small composite of the real world.” —Barbara Dondero “I love the parks and beaches, woods and ocean. It was the greenest part of the North Shore when I was looking for a home in Nassau County.” —Michelle Chalfoun “We’re native New Yorkers who moved here after living in beautiful Norway for 10 years. We wanted lots of green spaces, the ocean and good people and we got all of that and more in Glen Cove!” —Sarah Waters “I was introduced to Glen Cove by a friend many years ago. I knew when my family and I were ready to look for a home, this is where we would begin our search. We love it here for so many reasons, the diverse community, great schools, beautiful parks and all the wonderful family events that take place all year round. We are also so lucky to have so many great small businesses here in Glen Cove.” —Celina Cullen

BY JILL NOSSA jnossa@antonnews.com The Jan. 7 Glen Cove Board of Education meeting marked the official opening of budget season. Deputy Superintendent Kevin Wurtz presented the budget review. “There are a lot of good things in here, and a lot of things that are troubling,” Wurtz said at the start of his presentation. He noted that the district is in “good fiscal shape” and that the budget has “a lot of moving parts.” As in years past, the district starts the

process with a rollover budget, moving all expenses forward and accounting for known areas of estimated revenues and expenditures. It is a working document for the board members to get an idea of how much money will need to be cut, and which areas to cut from. “I went through every service, every employee and moved them forward without cuts,” Wurtz explained, “I flat lined the revenue, and will adjust accordingly when we know how much we will receive in state aid.” He then went through a Power Point

presentation highlighting every major category of expense contained in the budget, and pointed out areas that are expected to either go up or down in the 2013-14 school year. While some areas estimated to have a higher expenditure, such as the tax refunds line item at $449,000 and workmen’s compensation at $427,445, can be transferred out of the reserve fund at the board’s discretion, some of the biggest increases are out of the district’s control.

100 TH ANNIVERSARY

A Long History Of Theater In Glen Cove

Currently, the theater at 5 School St. is under renovation by AMC Theatres. Downtown Glen Cove has long been the hub of theater on the North Shore, with theaters on School and Glen streets. The Cove Theatre, at 90 School St.—currently the home of The Regency Assisted Living—underwent extensive renovations in 1949 and reopened that spring with a gala benefiting the Youth Fund of Glen Cove. Touted as “Long Island’s most beautiful and most modern theatre” the theater served as a showcase for both stage and screen productions. The theater later became Northstage Theatre. Down the street, the Glen Theatre was a vaudeville and movie palace that was razed in the late 1960s to make way for urban renewal; it has been replaced by the parking garage behind School and Glen Streets. Across the street, at 5 School St., Glen Cove Cinemas has been a cherished theater for those interesting in seeing a show close to home. The theater closed for about a year, in March 2013 and reopened under new management in the spring of 2014 after undergoing renovations. However, this past spring, the theater closed again, having been sold to AMC Theatres. The space is currently being renovated and is expected to open this fall. Meanwhile, the City of Glen Cove is stepping in by holding a weekly Cinema in the Streets movie showing every Saturday night throughout the summer. The streets are closed to traffic so people can enjoy a movie outdoors on the big screen—for free. —Jill Nossa

Glen Cove’s ‘Cinema in the Streets’ Movie Schedule

The City of Glen Cove is inviting all residents to continue to enjoy free family movies on School Street on Saturday nights at 8:30 p.m. The “Cinema in the Streets” program was created by Mayor Reggie Spinello to give Glen Cove movie lovers an entertainment alternative while AMC renovates the Glen Cove movie theater with luxury reclining seats, a new concession area and more.

Here’s a look at the upcoming movie schedule: July 22: Beauty and the Beast (2017) July 29: Back to the Future Aug. 5: The Secret Life of Pets Aug. 12: ET Aug. 19: Grease Not only do families enjoy free family movies, but complimentary popcorn is

also provided to complete the movie-goers experience. “It has been wonderful to see so many people coming downtown to watch our wide variety of movies so don’t forget to bring your chairs and think about dining at one of our many restaurants in downtown Glen Cove before show time,” said Spinello. DO NOT BELIEVE THE ALTERNATIVE TRUTH The Truth About The Garvies Point Waterfront Development in Glen Cove •

This development is NOT a done deal. There are ongoing legal challenges to the plan. •

There is still contamination on vast portions of the property, including “radiological material”, and not one permit has been issued for construction from the DEC or the US Army Corp of Engineers. •

In addition to appeals filed by The Village of Sea Cliff and the Committee, the Committee has filed a new action based on a massive change to the Storm Water Management plan by the developer. It is our firm belief, and the belief of the scientists with whom we have consulted, that these changes require a new Environmental Impact Statement. We are confident that we will ultimately prevail in court on this action. •

We believe that the Garvies Point development poses a serious threat to the health and safety of our residents, our land and water, and our quality of life. •

We believe that our very way of life is under attack from this massive development. If unchecked, this development will lead to unbearable levels of congestion and other adverse environmental conditions. •

We believe that this project can and will be replaced by a more reasonable plan.

To learn more and to take action contact us. info@sustainablewaterfront.org The not-for-profit Committee for a Sustainable Waterfront is working to save Long Island from this catastrophic plan. We support smart, responsible development. The proposed plan for the Garvies Point Waterfront is neither smart nor responsible. More information

In time, gravity, sun exposure, and the stresses of daily life take their toll on our look, particularly our face and neck. Deep creases appear beside the mouth, the jaw line slackens and jowls may develop, and the neck may have loose folds and fat deposits. Facelifts counteract these signs of aging by tightening muscle, removing fat, and trimming excess skin, giving your face a fresher, youthful look. After surgery, some patients look 10-15 years younger. For patients who are interested in minor adjustments using a non-surgical method, injectable fillers are effective in reducing wrinkles and softening facial creases. Botox® is just one of the popular non-surgical ways to reduce or eliminate frown lines, forehead creases and crow’s feet. A patient may also

Oyster Bay Music Festival Returns For 6th Season BY RECORD PILOT STAFF

GLENCOVE@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

From July 23 through July 30, 35 aspiring musicians will gather in the Village of Oyster Bay to take part in the sixth season of the Oyster Bay Music Festival (OBMF), an eight-day intensive musical immersion and concurrent free live classical music festival. Ranging in age from 12 to 24 and hailing from communities throughout Long Island and greater New York, these highly gifted classical music students will spend their days coaching with expert faculty, rehearsing solo and chamber music and performing nonstop. The festival hosts 17 public events during the week as well as eight programs at senior centers and several pop-up concerts in the village. “Our students will often perform two or three times a day, giving them an unparalleled opportunity to develop their performance skills,” said Lauren Ausubel, co-director and flutist. “The level is extremely high this year, many of our students coming from top music institutions such as

Juilliard, Manhattan School of Music, Yale School of Music and Oberlin Conservatory.” Unique to Oyster Bay Music Festival is its dedication to the art of performance and the revival of classical music as a vital part of community. “Classical music has a long history of passion, breaking boundaries and community engagement,” said co-director Pippa Borisy, pianist and director of the Great Neck Music Conservatory. “There is no reason for a classical music concert to ever be boring. Our goal is to create an experience of live performance, rooted in the community of Oyster Bay, that is fun, enlightening and full of surprises.” The festival approaches concerts with a sense of whimsy and fun. Every concert is themed. Mozart Shipwrecked takes place in the boat yard at Building Lot J at the Western Waterfront on July 24. Typical of this festival is the unexpected—audiences will find a Steinway grand piano adjacent to the ongoing construction of a replica of the Ida May boat. Or drop by Oyster Bay’s famed Cruise Night on July 25, where Steinway & Sons will

Bring your lawn chairs for Music On The Porch at Sagamore Hill on July 29; but first don’t miss a favorite family event, Clarinets, Clavichords...Carrots and Cucumbers? at Raynham Hall Museum. This is a one-of-a-kind simultaneous indoor salon-concert and outdoor vegetable orchestra workshop with Dale Stuckenbruck, who recently performed on the musical saw with the New York Philharmonic. OBMF partners with Oyster Bay Historical Society to present Classic Yachts Classic Music on July 24; and Looney Tunes, contemplating the crazy side of musicians or their music, on July 26. Additional concert venues during the eights days of music include Oakcliff Sailing Center, Not Just Art, Spinnakers Restaurant and St. John’s Church in Cold Spring Harbor. The festival kicks off on July 23 at Christ Church, one of Long Island’s favorite acoustic spaces, with Overture: Opening Festival Concert, featuring faculty and interns of the festival; presents Old But Not Obsolete at Christ Church on July 28; and ends in the same location with a concert called Beautiful Minds on July 30. All concerts are free and designed for all ages. Complete concert listings are available at www.oysterbaymusicfestival.org. All concerts are free and open to the public. Support is provided in part by Steinway & Sons, The Joel Foundation and a Community Arts Grant from the New York State Council on the Arts. Set against a beautiful waterfront seascape residents came together to show their Glen Cove community pride while helping to raise money to underwrite the city’s anniversary festivities in 2018. Those activities will include celebrating two historic milestones— the 350th anniversary of the founding of Glen Cove and the 100th birthday of Glen Cove’s incorporation as a dity with a series of activities including a gala January event and a week-long celebration in May 2018 complete with a community picnic, fireworks,

a weekend street festival, Old Timer’s baseball game and the annual Memorial Day parade. The sold-out event featured the talented brew masters of the Garvies Point Brewery, who offered a taste of a new summer ale which was crafted in honor of the city’s upcoming 350th anniversary in 2018. Thanks to the generosity of corporate event sponsors, 76 North Realty Co., the Bendi Group, One Garvies Point LLC and the Brew & BBQ attendees, more than $12,000 was raised to help underwrite next year’s anniversary celebration. “This event introduced so many of our residents to the beauty of the Glen Cove waterfront and I greatly appreciated the hard work of our GC350 committee who did an outstanding job,” said Glen Cove Mayor Reggie Spinello. “It was a wonderful summer evening and you could feel the energy in the air as neighbors and families came together at the Glen Cove Ferry Terminal to enjoy an evening of good food, entertainment and a taste of a brand new brew.” Guests were treated to their choice of some BBQ favorites including pulled BBQ chicken, cheeseburgers and sausage and peppers catered by Sid’s All-American Cafe, along with desserts provided by a new Glen Cove bakery, Heritage Bakery, located at 1 Garvies Point Rd. Watermelons were provided by Stop & Shop Supermarkets, Rottkamp Farms and North Shore Farms, with refreshing shaved ice treats served by Musketa Cove Bail and Tackle and John DeJesus. The Mill Neck Cup will be held at Pine Hollow Country Club in East Norwich.

Mill Neck Manor Event Season In Full Swing The Mill Neck Family of Organizations has announced two summer event favorites: the new and improved Mill Neck Cup Golf Tournament & Luxury Spa Day and the sixth annual Sail the Sound for Deafness Regatta and Cocktail Party. Set at the renowned Pine Hollow Country Club in East Norwich, a venue that has hosted professional golf events like the Pepsi Open and the Met PGA Championship, the all-inclusive Mill Neck Cup & Luxury Spa event has something for everyone. The Mill Neck Family of Organizations’ annual charity event, held on July 31, allows participants to enjoy a round of golf on Pine Hollow’s noted sprawling course and manicured greens, indulge in a luxurious day at the spa for the female guests and top off the evening with a delicious cocktail dinner. Exciting contests and prizes are weaved throughout the tournament, like the chance to sink a hole-in-one and drive home in a brand new Range Rover from Land Rover of Glen Cove. Throughout the day, golfers can rub shoulders with former New York Jets linebacker Chad Cascadden and enjoy complimentary refreshments and a cigar from Hampton Cigar Company. Participants will also receive a swag bag and mementos like a professional photo of their foursome by Golfing Magazine to take home that day. The charity golf event is no longer just for the men: the lady participants are offered a day of rejuvenation at the Luxury Spa. Located inside of Pine Hollow’s French-Norman style Vanderbilt mansion, the spa offers the ultimate in relaxation. Female guests can pamper themselves with

everything from massages to make-up to blowouts from the top businesses across Long Island, like returning supporter Elizabeth Arden from the Garden City Hotel, as well as indulge in private boutique shopping inside of the spa. Unwind and cool down by taking a dip in the private pool lounge or take a yoga or Zumba class taught by top-notch instructors from New York Sports Club Syosset. Conclude the spectacular day with a delicious cocktail dinner on the veranda overlooking the sunset. Guests can casually chat it up with old friends and meet some new ones, experience a fresh new atmosphere with surprise live entertainment, bid on exclusive silent auction gifts from Steiner Sports and win premier raffle prizes. Awards and the Mill Neck Cup trophy will be presented to the top golfers and special recognition will be given to this year’s honoree, Matthew Pomara. Funds raised by this event will directly benefit Mill Neck’s mission. More specifically, this year, it will

help support the Center for Hearing Health’s new endeavor: an audiology van. Complete with two sound booths and testing equipment, the van will take audiology services directly to groups and organizations in need throughout the greater New York and Long Island areas. Also coming up shortly after the Mill Neck Cup is the sixth annual Sail the Sound for Deafness Regatta & Cocktail Party on Aug. 10. Oakliff Sailing is making their fleet available for an exciting race around Oyster Bay and into the Sound. Sailors are welcome to participate with their own boats, as well. Spectators are invited to watch from The WaterFront Center’s showpiece Christeen—the oldest oyster sloop in North America. After the race is over, a cocktail party will take place at the Mill Neck Manor—a spectacular Tudor Revival mansion—featuring great food and drinks from top restaurants in the area, a live band, raffles, a silent auction from Steiner Sports and much more.

“It’s so important to us to not only make sure all of our generous supporters and participants have a great time at our events, but to get the message out of why we are all here, and that’s to help deaf children and adults,” said Samantha Lordi, the recently appointed director of events for Mill Neck. “We are finding more innovative ways to get our students involved in our events, like taking a tour of the Oakcliff Sailing Center and helping out at the Mill Neck Cup with everything from registration to games on the course.” With the increasing popularity of these events, early sign-up is encouraged. There are many ways to participate; detailed information, including registration, fees, sponsorships, donating to a favorite Mill Neck cause and schedules, can be found at www.millneck.org or you can contact director Lordi at 516-628-4239 or email events@millneck.org. The Mill Neck Family of Organizations carries out its mission through its separate organizations, including Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf, educating children who are deaf and have other disabilities through unique educational and therapy programs; Mill Neck Services, helping deaf adults find meaningful employment; Center for Hearing Health, aiding the deaf and hearing impaired community gain access to proper hearing aid devices and care; Lutheran Friends of the Deaf, giving deaf individuals access to the word of God all around the world; and Mill Neck International, providing skills and resources for deaf communities worldwide. —Submitted by the Mill Neck Family of Organizations

Committed To Protecting Taxpayer Dollars Millions of taxpayer dollars are spent each year on infrastructure improvements in the capital plan that I support. As your legislator, responsible funding of projects is a major priority of mine. To be optimal stewards of taxpayer dollars, a critical step is to ensure due diligence is given when reviewing and approving contracts. Unfortunately, our county executive who is under indictment oversees the current process. His deputy county executive has stated that he is also under investigation for contract steering. Eighteen months ago the district attorney stated that an independent inspector general should be put on place before future bonding and contracts are awarded. She called our current process a “recipe for disaster.” Until contract reform is instituted, our only recourse to protect taxpayers from future corruption is to refrain from bonding many items. My caucus has decided that, unless the administration and majority legislators agree to hire an independent inspector general, we will consider bonding only for items that directly affect public safety and some environmental issues. We have bonded for many items for our police, such as vests, cars, a boat and other items, as well as some environmental projects, such as a Bethpage Plume Study. On April 3, the majority stood on the Legislature steps and called for County Executive Ed Mangano to resign. “There is a cloud over our government and it’s an obligation to try…to remove the cloud,” said

FROM THE DESK OF NASSAU COUNTY LEGISLATOR Delia deRiggiWhitton Presiding Officer Norma Gonsalves. Even with this happening, at almost every meeting the administration and majority legislators continue to push for bonding. They continue to claim that the current oversight process is fine, although that person’s job security is in the hands of the county executive. I’m not happy about refraining from bonding to push for contract reform. But, given the larger issue of past corruption, not bonding is the only way that my fellow minority legislators and I can prevent further abuse of tax dollars. The administration and majority legislators are ignoring the fact that contract reform is the only solution to fixing our fault-ridden contract review system. I am committed to protecting taxpayers from future abuse. This isn’t a political issue. It is good government. I am inspired every day by my constituents’ encouragement to keep up the fight to end corruption in Nassau County once and for all. As always, please do not hesitate to contact my office with questions or comments on this or any other topic at 516-571-6211 or dderiggiwhitton@ nassaucountyny.gov.

Graham Nash: Time Loves A Hero

BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO

DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

It’s hardly an exaggeration to say that in his 75 years on this mortal coil, Graham Nash has lived the equivalent of multiple lifetimes. As a musician, he’s made his mark as a founding member of The Hollies, Crosby, Stills & Nash and its various permutations, in addition to having a respectable solo career. The native of Blackpool, Lancashire, has also indulged his creative impulses via a lesser-known but equally lauded foray into photography. All this on top of being a proudly liberal social activist who has always been vocal and active in causes that have had him pen songs while railing against everything from nuclear waste dumping (“Barrel of Pain”) and what happened at the 1968 Democratic National Convention (“Chicago”) to overly-aggressive defense policies (“Military Madness,” “Soldiers of Peace”) and injustices within the justice system (“Prison Song”). And given what’s currently going on in our nation’s capital, Nash is just as outspoken at this time of his life. “I think this administration is

I don’t see how you get a head of the EPA that doesn’t believe in climate change. We deserve better than this,” he angrily pointed out. “What are we teaching our children about this? That

you can [sexually assault women] and think it’s alright and kiss them whether they like it or not? You can’t normalize this presidency. A lot of people won’t even call him president and that’s a good but small way to resist and we must resist.” On the personal front, the last few years have been ones of change. A public falling-out with David Crosby has essentially signaled the end of Crosby, Stills and Nash reuniting, with or without Neil Young. Nash’s 38-year marriage to Susan Sennett ended in divorce last year, on the heels of his 2013 memoir Wild Tales: A Rock & Roll Life. It also spurred his return to the studio for 2016’s This Path Tonight, his first solo studio outing since 2002’s Songs For Survivors. Nash is clear about the impetus behind this latest collection of songs. “I was married for 38 years and was not in love the last decade or so of that marriage, and realized at 75 I need to be as happy as can be for what is the rest of my life,” he explained. “And the universe continues to smile on me, and when my marriage broke up, I fell in love with this beautiful, talented, spiritually, wonderfully educated bright woman here in New York City. Her name is Amy Grantham and she’s a fabulous artist.” At the three-quarter century mark, Nash has no intention of

slowing down. With former Bruce Springsteen sideman Shayne Fontayne (who produced the latest album) as his creative partner for the last handful of years, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is intent on looking forward and playing smaller venues like Landmark on Main Street, many of them for the first time. Nash perks up when asked what fans can expect when they come to see him at an intimate space like this. “The truth is, with these smaller theaters, I can see the audience. I can look in their eyes and know if I’m making a connection. It’s important. I don’t want to be some performing puppet up there. I want to interact with the audience and let them know how I want to be there and how great this moment is tonight,” he said. “I’m tired of seeing people where it’s obvious they don’t want to be there. I saw The Police on their last big tour, about five years ago, and it was obvious that they didn’t even like each other and you can’t fool an audience, they’ll pick up on that immediately.” Graham Nash will be appearing on July 22 at Landmark on Main Street, 223 Main St., Port Washington. YMCA Brings Healthy Kids Day To Glen Cove Lia Allan of Glen Cove enjoys Healthy Kids Day with a group of children at the YMCA.

The YMCA of Long Island recently celebrated Healthy Kids Day. The event has addressed critical health and wellness issues facing families for 26 years. The nation’s largest health day for children, Healthy Kids Day reaches more than 1.2 million children and parents nationally. Locally, Bethpage Federal Credit Union once again served as the generous underwriting sponsor. The event was held at five YMCA branches in Nassau and Suffolk County, including East Hampton, Patchogue, Great South Bay, Huntington and Glen Cove. During the day of activities, children and families enjoyed fun, and healthy activities, games, arts & crafts, all aimed at teaching the long-term benefits of exercise and proper nutrition. “More children and teens are overweight now than ever before; that’s why we encourage children to learn healthy habits early, and work to

with being overweight or obese, such as diabetes and cancer. In addition to burning calories and keeping blood sugar levels balanced, regular physical activity makes our bones and muscles strong, builds strength, relieves stress, and improves sleep and overall mental health. These are enormous benefits for children who are over-scheduled today and have little time just to be active and have fun.” The YMCA together with Bethpage Federal Credit Union aims to inspire kids to stay active all year round with fun and easy ways to exercise to meet the Centers for Disease Control’s

The YMCA encourages children to make healthy choices such as eating five servings of fruits and vegetables per day and participating in physical activities with their families. In addition to physical activity, Healthy Kids Day also promoted the Y’s drive to encourage students to exercise their minds by reading 30 minutes per day at home. “Another big initiative we have at the Y in partnership with the Rauch Foundation, is the Imagination Station— a fun program to build children’s literacy skills over the summer months,” said Beverly Lacy, vice president of philanthropy. “Summer learning-loss or the loss of academic skills and knowledge over the summer months is one of the most significant causes of the achievement gap between lower and higher-income youth.” Imagination Station is an integral component of the YMCA’s Summer Day Camp program, where every week children are encouraged to participate in an interactive, engaging curriculum and track their progress. Last year, 99 percent of campers maintained or increased their reading and comprehension levels. CATCH THE ACTION

YOUR

Campanella’s Career-Ending Accident BY JILL NOSSA

JNOSSA@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

In late January 1958, baseball player Roy Campanella of the Brooklyn Dodgers was seriously injured in a car accident on Dosoris Lane near Apple Tree Lane in Glen Cove and the story was covered in the paper—a combined edition called the Record and Pilot and The Spotlight at the time—later that

week. The Glen Cove resident was driving home from the liquor store he operated in Harlem around 3:30 a.m. on the previous Tuesday in a rented Chevrolet sedan when the car hit a patch of ice while coming around an S-curve and crashed into a telephone pole; his head struck and smashed a window on the right side of the car, causing a broken neck. According to the article, doctors said Campanella would have

died if his neck had been broken just an inch higher than it was. Campanella was taken to Glen Cove Community Hospital, where he underwent surgery on his neck. The article reports that the accident left the catcher paralyzed from the waist down, he would have to remain in the hospital for six weeks and would have to wear a neck brace for “some time.” Predictions were that he would be up and walking within two months to a year. However, he was wheelchair-bound for the remainder of his life and the accident ended his playing career. After his stay in Glen Cove, the ballplayer was transferred to Doctors Hospital in New York, where rooms were maintained for injured players by the Dodgers. In January 1959, Campanella became involved with the Dodgers in a different way, being named the assistant supervisor of scouting for the eastern part of the United States and special coach at the team’s annual spring training camp in Vero Beach, FL, where he served each year as a mentor and coach to young catchers in the Dodger organization. In 1978, he moved to California and accepted a job as assistant to the Dodgers’ director of community relations. Campanella received the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in the National League three times: in 1951, 1953 and 1955. During his career, he threw out 57 percent of the base runners who tried to steal a base on him, the highest by any catcher in major league history. In 1955, Campanella had a large role in helping Brooklyn win its first-ever World Series championship. After the Dodgers lost the first two games of the series to the Yankees, Campanella began Brooklyn’s comeback by hitting a two-out, two-run home run in

Information about Campanella is included in the current exhibit, The Old Ball Game, at the North Shore Historical Museum, 140 Glen St., in Glen Cove, which runs through Aug. 19. The museum is open on Wednesdays from 2 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more info, visit www.northshorehistoricalmuseum.org the first inning of game three. The Dodgers won that game, got another home run from Campanella in a game four victory that tied the series, then went on to claim the series in seven games when Johnny Podres shutout the Yankees 2-0 in game seven. The Brooklyn Dodgers relocated to Los Angeles after the 1957 and became the Los Angeles Dodgers, though Campanella never played a game for Los Angeles. In 1969, Campanella was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, the second player of African American heritage so honored, after Jackie Robinson. The same year, he received the Bronze Medallion from the City of New York. Information about Campanella is included in the current exhibit, The Old Ball Game, at the North Shore Historical Museum, 140 Glen St., in Glen Cove, which runs through Aug. 19.
