The Merchant Marine Academy:
76 Years Of Service By Mike Adams
A few moments before the hour, students at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point begin to converge near the brick-covered courtyard outside the mess hall.
T
welve strikes ring off the chapel bell—it’s noon. Before the echoes finish reverberating around the campus, midshipmen—the word the academy uses for its landside students—pour out of the academic buildings on the far side of the old Gold Coast estate. Slowly, they start to pool into groups; some to the left, some to the right, with a small detachment of upperclassmen officers surveying the whole scene. They’re being organized into their respective companies, shepherded into formation by their fourth-year commanders. As the companies form, inside the mess hall a small army of first-year students flies around the cavernous cafeteria, setting tables. The hall seats 1,000, and on any given day when regular classes are in session, 750 midshipmen and instructors will pass through here around midday.
14
GREAT NECK RECORD MAGAZINE
The academy has its newest recruits service the older students to help instill discipline. Far from being a burden, many first-year midshipmen don’t mind the extra tasks. At some point, everybody had to bus the tables. “I love it here,” first-year midshipman Reginald Ash, who hails from Colorado Springs, says. “This is training everyone goes through. We have to go through the plebe year, and learn to be led, so that once we lead people, we know what it feels like when we’re in those same situations. We’re going through the thick of it, but everyone here has been through the exact same thing.” Back outside, the companies are gathered. Regimental Commander JC Henderson, a well-built young man whose demeanor casts a shadow far larger than his body, calls for reports from the company

commanders. Everybody is accounted for, so Henderson tells the midshipmen to “carry out the plan for the day.” The uninitiated might call that plan “lunch.” A pair of drummers beat a simple cadence as the companies, gathered in ranks, colors leading the way, head into the mess hall. These hundreds of students come from all across the country; a few even hail from outside the U.S. entirely. But in the procession, they look as uniform as any band of military men and women, forming a sight that would be well at home at West Point or Parris Island. When everybody is inside, Henderson reads off the day’s announcements. There’s not much to report except for a pair of birthdays. Fourth-year engineering-track midshipman Chelsea Chamberlain is turning 22, so she’s getting a cake at the front of the mess hall with the other student leaders. For everyone else, lunch is grilled ham and cheese sandwiches, some water, some juice and soup-and-salad bars at the flanks. Today’s lunch routine is a ritual that stretches back decades. The Merchant Marine was established by Congress in 1936, but they lacked a dedicated home in their early years. For half a decade, would-be mariners trained at a number of ad-hoc installations, before the academy acquired the land it currently sits on in 1942. Their 81-acre Kings Point home was formerly the estate of automobile magnate Walter Chrysler, whose old mansion still stands as Wiley Hall, the administrative heart of the academy. President Roosevelt dedicated the academy in 1943. It celebrates its 76th birthday on Sept. 30. Students and graduates from the
school have been called to serve their country in times of war for nearly a century now. Seventy-six years of battles have taken their tolls, though none of the conflicts has had as devastating an effect on the body as World War II. Merchant Mariners manned the decks of both military and supply ships during the Second World War, most notably aiding the civilian fleet aboard the country’s famed Liberty Ships that ferried men and supplies across the Atlantic Ocean to England and Europe. The North Sea was the most dangerous body of water in the world during the early phases of America’s World War II engagement, its shipping channels constantly stalked by German warplanes and submerged U-boats. Thousands of merchant vessels were sunk. Before Berlin fell in 1945, 142 students and graduates from the academy would lose their lives. The world outside saves most of its honorifics for the dead of other branches, but here those lost cadets are revered by students and graduates alike as heroes. Paeans and monuments for those lost students, universally referred to as “The 142,” are spread generously across the campus. Their names adorn the head of the mess hall, they’re commemorated on the colors of every company. The on-site museum even has an exhibit dedicated to the stories of each lost cadet. More recently, the students here played a key role in the events of September 11. The campus sits on the easternmost edge of New York Harbor, with a view clear through to the Manhattan skyline on a sunny day. On that fateful morning eighteen years ago, midshipmen watched from the shores as Ground Zero turned to smoke. Those same students quickly got to work in the aftermath, evacuating survivors off Manhattan and serving as a staging ground and resting area for volunteers and first responders that needed time to breathe away from the rubble-filled corridors of the city. Before they graduate, every student at Kings Point will spend three years studying here and one year in total on the sea, split between a four-month and an eight-month stint. Whether they gear their studies towards engineering or deck operations, whether they go on to serve in the military or the civilian merchant fleet, the biggest lessons this place has to teach its students have stayed the same for every one of its 76 years, and don’t have all that much to do with the specifics of how to run a ship. “You learn how to push yourself past what you think you’re able to do, every day,” Chamberlain says. “You go to sleep knowing that you accomplished so much more than what you wake up thinking you’re going to do. It’s a grind, 24/7, but you still have to have the right attitude to push everyone around you to better themselves.”

Exceptional faculty and staff inspire each student along their educational journey, always promoting the safe and welcoming culture that is one of the hallmarks of the St. Mary’s experience.
THE SCHOOLS OF SAINT MARY At the Schools of Saint Mary, Manhasset, students in Nursery through Grade 12 flourish in an innovative and nurturing educational environment rooted in Catholic values. The mission of the school is to empower students to find inspiration and joy as they discover themselves and learn what they are capable of accomplishing. Small class sizes foster a more personal connection between students and faculty. Faculty and administrators at St. Mary strives to educate the whole child – intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, socially, and physically. The use of cutting-edge technology, including campus-wide wireless capabilities, an online system that allows students and parents to access homework and grades, and schoolissued Chromebooks for every student in sixth through twelfth grade, helps teachers provide students with a strong academic foundation. At the early childhood and primary grade levels, students actively explore concepts and develop skills through an interdisciplinary approach utilizing the latest technology, hands-on learning materials, and skillrelated experiences. Students in grades 6-12 incorporate technology as an interactive tool that enables them to be independent learners while investigating research-based learning. The St. Mary’s education is about more than just academics. Spiritual values, a sense of service and the growth of faith are fostered by connecting Gospel values to all parts of the curriculum, including core academic classes, allowing students at all grade levels
to deepen their moral standards and ethics. Students learn about the tenets and meaning of their faith and how to live it joyfully, especially in serving others within the school and greater community. The school day doesn’t end when the last bell rings – St. Mary’s becomes a vibrant after-school community as students at all grade levels participate in a wide range of extracurricular clubs and activities, exploring their talents and skills outside of academia. Middle and high school students gain an appreciation for the arts and develop their creativity through participation in the Fine and Performing Arts Program. By taking classes in art, chorus, band, orchestra, dance or stage performance; performing arts students learn from and work alongside professionals in those fields. The Schools of St. Mary is also proud of its competitive athletic programs at the middle and high school levels, which are highly regarded for both excellent coaching and superb sportsmanship. From early childhood students to their high school seniors, The Schools of St. Mary is preparing inspired thinkers and creative leaders by guiding all students as they develop the character traits of great leaders and skilled team players. he history of Great Neck is well-documented, such as the creation of the Village Green and the history behind many of the street names. A lot of these records have been collected and preserved by the Great Neck Historical Society, who have had many iterations over the last century. The current society was formed about 10 to 15 years ago.

“It is local citizens dedicated to preserving the history of the community, serving as a resource for people who want to find out about things in the community and presenting programs that relate to the history of the community,” says Marc Katz, a board member of the historical society. “The historical society has taken on two major projects on an ongoing basis.” One of them is protecting the Stepping Stones Lighthouse, which is located in the middle of Long Island Sound between the Great Neck peninsula and

City Island. The lighthouse stands about one-and-ahalf stories high and can be seen in the distance while crossing the Throgs Neck Bridge. Built in 1877, it was initially owned by the federal government before it was offered to local municipalities when it was no longer needed. The Town of North Hempstead took ownership of the lighthouse in 2008. “It sat for quite a number of years with nothing happening to it,” says Katz. “The Great Neck Historical Society began a campaign to save the lighthouse because it is
badly decaying and falling apart. Together with the town, the historical society raised a significant amount of money to preserve the lighthouse but no work has been done yet.” Spearheaded by Great Neck Park District Commissioner Robert Lincoln, the historical society has continued to raise funds and has been urging the town to get started on revitalizing the lighthouse. The town, in response, has begun a bidding process for a construction company to build a dock on the island so that boats can easily go there and bring materials

Another project that the organization has worked to conquer is restoring the Saddle Rock Grist Mill. It was initially used by farmers in the 18th and 19th century when the Great Neck area was mostly farmland. The mill was built to grind grain for farmers to send to Manhattan and was sold on the market. The mill is owned by Nassau County. “The mill is in disrepair,” says Katz. “The society have pressured Legislator Ellen Birnbaum and the county parks department to restore the grist mill. They have presented their plans to the historical society on getting it fixed. These are the types of projects that the historical society has been involved in to preserve landmarks of the community.” Unfortunately, not every project has been a success for the society. The First Playhouse of Great Neck, which later became a movie theater, has been closed for a few decades and stands

boarded up on Middle Neck Road. As of now, ownership of the theater has a proposal in that would tear down the theater and build an apartment building. “The historical society would’ve liked to have seen it preserved,” says Katz. “The Village of Great Neck Estates has been rejecting these proposals and the building has sat for many years. The society has been working to either get this building preserved as a theater or at least the facade of it preserved. If it had to be an apartment building, at least it could be decorated with posters of the building’s historic past. All of this is up in the air.” In addition to all the projects the historical society works on, they also present programs to help educate people about all the great history Great Neck has at no charge to the community. Just this month, the society presented a program teaching people about the various performers and entertainers that lived in the area. Most of them had jobs in Manhattan but lived in Great Neck. The First Playhouse

of Great Neck actually showcased Off-Broadway productions before they made it into the city. “Many performers have lived in the community as recently as comedian Alan King,” says Katz. “One of the most famous to live in Great Neck was Groucho Marx. But there were many others. It’s the society’s mission to present these programs to let people know about the history of their community.” The organization continues to work on many projects to keep the historical aspect of Great Neck alive, as well as give people an education in what has built the city we know today. The Great Gatsby
Fitzgerald Puts Great Neck On The Map
By Joe Scotchie
A
t age 24, F. Scott Fitzgerald was a literary sensation. His ďŹ rst two novels, This Side of Paradise and The Beautiful and Damned had turned this native of St. Paul, MN, into the spokesman for the Lost Generation, those restless Americans emerging from the wreckage of World War I into the world of appers and stockjobbers, jazz music, radio, talking movies and a Golden Age of Sports.

After the publication of his second novel, Fitzgerald and his young bride, Zelda, plus their infant daughter, moved back to the novelist’s hometown. Fitzgerald finished up a play, The Vegetable, but otherwise, got little fiction completed. Ever the restless young man, Fitzgerald declared his time in Minnesota to be a “wasted year.” But he did have a play completed and so, it was off to New York to find a producer. In New York, Fitzgerald’s friend and fellow novelist, John Dos Passos, helped the young couple with house hunting. Dos Passos took Scott and Zelda to Great Neck, where they rented a house on Gateway Drive. A neighbor was the famed sportswriter, Ring Lardner. Fitzgerald’s career came to a sad ending, but the man was exceedingly generous. Unlike most novelists, he was not competitive. He championed the young Ernest Hemingway who would be published by Scribner’s, Fitzgerald’s publisher. He also helped Lardner, a sportswriter who did not take the game of writing so seriously, to get his short stories published also by the same house. Fitzgerald later boosted the career of Maxwell Perkins’ third “son,” the novelist Thomas Wolfe. Fitzgerald envisioned Scribner’s as ground zero for a new Golden Age in American literature and with it, civilization itself. Great Neck was home to other artists, most of them in the entertainment business. That impressive lineup included Eddie Cantor, Ed Wynn, Gene Buck and Lew Fields. In all, however, Great Neck, as the novelists’ premiere biographer Matthew Bruccoli claimed, “was not conducive to serious work.” The couple was young and famous and both wanted to enjoy all the amenities Jazz Age-era New York
had to offer. Which they did. Fitzgerald’s time in Great Neck wasn’t a waste. On the advice of his editor, Fitzgerald began reading the two titans of 19th-century literature, Fyodor Dostoevsky and Charles Dickens. As with the brash, young Hemingway, Fitzgerald was ready to step into the ring with the greats. As important, Great Neck provided Fitzgerald with material for his third—and most famous—novel, The Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald started the novel in Great Neck, but he had to travel to France to complete the manuscript. The problem? New York, including Great Neck, offered far too many temptations to the young couple. Fitzgerald didn’t do much writing in 1922 and for the first half of 1923, it was more of the same: A life now filled with parties and drinking, the first signs that the man would become an alcoholic. Zelda loved her time among the wealthy, too. Plus, their lifestyle was beginning to catch up to them. Fitzgerald was writing and selling short stories. As a famous writer, he commanded top dollar. His yearly earnings were now $36,000, which translated into a princely sum of $250,000 a year by today’s standards. Alas, not even that was enough. Fitzgerald set aside $2,000 a month for expenses. The bills, however, ran over $3,000. Among the items the couple was spending on was home liquors, “wild parties” and miscellaneous cash. “A comfortable but dangerous and deteriorating year at Great Neck,” Fitzgerald noted in his journal as 1923 drew to a close. “No ground under our feet.” Was it true? Great Neck offered much inspiration for the novelist. There was another neighbor, Max Gerlach, a man with

a mysterious past (it was rumored that he was a bootlegger). Gerlach and Fitzgerald were friends. The former referred to the novelist as “sport,” one of Jay Gatsby’s favorite words. Another neighbor got caught up in a Wall Street scandal for the misuse of a brokerage house’s assets. Plus, there were the mansions and the all-night parties. It all came together in France, where the Fitzgeralds rented a house on the French Riviera and the novelist wrote the story of Jay Gatsby, a wealthy man also with a shady past, one suffering from the unrequited love of Daisy Buchanan. Gerlach is not Gatsby (the man was an automobile salesman in Flushing). Great Neck and Sands Point, meanwhile, were portrayed thusly:
Sands Point
It was on that slender riotous island...where there are...two unusual formations of land. Twenty miles from the city a pair of enormous eggs, identical in contour and separated only by a courtesy bay, jut out into the most domesticated body of salt water in the Western hemisphere. They are not perfect ovals...but their physical resemblance must be a source of perpetual wonder to the gulls that fly overhead. To the wingless a more interesting phenomenon is their dissimilarity in every particular except shape and size.
Life is better with friends.
And a helping hand.

The Great Gatsby was published in 1925 to critical acclaim. T.S. Eliot hailed it as the “first step” forward in American fiction since Henry James. It sold up to 20,000 copies, even though the author had hoped for more. By the age of 30, Fitzgerald now had three novels under his belt, plus a budding collection of short stories and magazine pieces. He continued writing fiction, publishing Tender Is Night (1936) and the posthumous The Last Tycoon (1941). At the time of his death in 1940, Fitzgerald, ruined by drink and a fading

career as a Hollywood screenwriter, was only a dim light in American letters. However, in the 1950s, his reputation soared again. Both Hemingway and William Faulkner had won the Nobel Prize for Literature, highlighting an era where Fitzgerald was a major figure. His novels went back into print, enjoying brisk sales that continue to this day. No less than 300,000 copies of The Great Gatsby are sold each year. Fitzgerald left Great Neck in 1923 and never looked back. It didn’t matter. Literary history had already been made. In the novel,
Great Neck was immortalized as “West Egg,” while Sands Point was dubbed “East Egg.” In 2000, the Modern Library at Random House commissioned a group of writers and critics to compile a list of the top 100 novels in English of the 20th century. James Joyce’s Ulysses was listed number one. The Great Gatsby was number two. Joyce was an Irishman, so Fitzgerald’s jewel was voted the top American novel of the century. The unsuspecting Great Neck of the 1920s turned out to be an indispensable village after all.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Comeback House By Joe Scotchie

Architects may come/ And architects may go and/ Never change your point of view/When I run dry I stop awhile and think of you. So sang Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel in their 1969 song, “So Long Frank Lloyd Wright” about the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright American architect. Wright was the most revolutionary architect of the early 20th century. Most of his work, residential and commercial, was in the Midwest and the Western states. Wright’s most famous building in New York is the Guggenheim Museum on Fifth Avenue and 88th Street. There is only one Wright production in Great Neck. But it remains a residence that stands out in a village noted for Tudor-style architecture. In the late 1930s, Wright’s career was in decline. Wright’s eclectic style seemed out-of-date for the grim 1930s. But he did have his fans. In 1937, Benjamin Rebhuhn, a magazine publisher, commissioned Wright to design a home for his family in Great Neck Estates. The neighborhood, as noted, was populated mostly by Tudor or neoclassical styles. Wright’s trademark Usonian design was out of place. Wright’s Usonian, according to Tim Seeberger in a Long Island Press article on the structure, signified “an idealized vision of America that celebrated individuality and oneness with nature.” Wright, Seeberger adds, fashioned his designs after organic elements. The Great Neck project, which represented a comeback of sorts for Wright, was completed as a two-level structure with a carport and windows that looked out into the wooded surroundings. The exterior was composed of tidewater red cypress board and batten, with brick and red roof

tile. Wright had made his mark as a designer of prairie styling architecture. This structure, however, was suited more for a suburban lifestyle, which would reach a peak in the postwar years. It worked. Both the exterior and interior remain largely the same as when the house was first built. The interior design was also in line with Wright’s maverick style. “[Wright’s] approach was a direct counter to traditional home design which tended to section off each room,” a Wikipedia article observes. “Instead, different floor heights were used to differentiate between rooms. This is a cruciform plan with a two-story living room which was similar to a great hall or even a chapel...The second floor rooms are open as a balcony to the floors below.” “People thought he was dead,” says Caroline Rob Zaleski, author of Long Island Modernism: 1930-1980. “He was forgotten. He didn’t work all through the 1920s and 1930s. If you were a modern architect coming up in architecture school in the 1930s, you were hardly taught Frank Lloyd Wright.” “It’s really not about designing a building,” added Wright expert Timothy Totten. “It’s about designing a place that people live and work in. Architecture is about designing a way of life.” The Rebhuhn house was Wright’s last designed-structure on Long Island. Zaleski, for one, regrets that loss. “We could only imagine what he would have done with a site mid-Long Island, like the Hempstead Plains,” she claimed. “He would have liked Long Island. It was a place ripe for development.” But the man wasn’t finished with New York. He later designed a 95-acre planned community near Pleasantville, itself a perfect name for an architect whose creations remain pleasant and pleasing to the human eye.

Kinky Boots is one of the many productions streaming on the BroadwayHD platform.
Bringing Theater To The Masses Great Neck producers do just that with BroadwayHD By Dave Gil de Rubio

ou can say that live theater is in Stewart Lane’s blood. The proud Great Neck High School North alum has spent the past four decades plying his trade as a Broadway producer (Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Legally Blonde) and director on top of prior experience as a playwright and actor. Lane’s passion for the stage, shared with his wife Bonnie Comley, led the duo to launch BroadwayHD, a theater streaming platform, back in 2015. For the price of $8.99 a month, subscribers have access to an aggregate of 300 full-length musicals and plays to choose from. Four years later, Lane and Comley have essentially cornered the market in offering this kind of service. While he declined to provide numbers, Lane says they’ve enjoyed a major growth spurt that’s seen their subscriber base grow 110 percent in the past year alone. Not unlike the way Hollywood movie studios
Stewart Lane
received the advent of television, the live theater world had trepidation about getting involved with the BroadwayHD concept when it was initially launched. “One of the challenges we faced in starting out is that we’re dealing with 17 unions and guilds. One of the advantages I had was that I’ve been producing on Broadway for 40 years, so they know me. It’s been a little easier than for someone who might be coming in from the outside,” he explains. “But now we’re seen as an additive. People in the industry see that we encourage audiences to seek out live theater. I will also cite this as a statistic. The Broadway audience for the past 35 years has been around 45 or older—it’s usually women from a higher economic bracket who are better educated and are buying the tickets. Last year for the first time, they lowered the median age to about 40 or 41 and I’m sure that’s because of our BroadwayHD

subscribers, who are more 18 to 25 versus mid-40s to 60s. We’re definitely a younger audience. We’re the future of Broadway because we are bringing younger audiences in and are the gateway to Broadway.” The confluence of technology, the continued explosion of live theater’s appeal and a younger generation comfortable with different ways of accessing content led to the aha moment that inspired Lane and Comley to launch BroadwayHD. “When we started out, most people looked askance at us. People had tried to monetize other aspects of live theater— whether it was on pay-per-view on cable, the DVD market and even more recently, in cinema. But there wasn’t enough of a populace out there that supported the theater that could maintain this kind of investment,” Lane recalls. “Around

the time we talked, things were changing, especially the audiences. The younger audiences that loved the theater and their love of it kept increasing among young people. They watched how their entertainment kept
changing and how it moved from movies and TV to iPads, iPhones and laptops. My wife Bonnie, who is my partner in the venture, saw this transition happening and we wanted to be in the forefront of this.
That’s always been a mandate of ours—celebrating live theater and sharing it with the world, so it can be geographically accessible to those who can’t make it to Broadway. And make it as affordable for those who

With the global reach of the web, Lane has been delighted to receive emails from ecstatic subscribers hailing from roughly 122 countries around the globe including Nigeria, Argentina, Japan and Mexico. It’s all about the democratization of live theater that’s at the heart of what BroadwayHD represents. “One of the most rewarding parts of the whole experience is the emails we get from all over the world from people who have never been to a Broadway show but know what it is,” Lane says. “They thank me and say that it’s changed their life. That’s exactly what you want theater to do to people—affect and stay with them.”

GREAT NECK
his idyllic land, this Gatsby country called Great Neck, is a place far more deep and vibrant than an outsider might expect. In reality, this seemingly singular community is nine separate villages, each one full of people with wildly varying backgrounds and viewpoints. But within all that diversity comes one unshifting constant: a love for this community, no matter who you ask.

Regina Gil Director, Gold Coast Arts Center I moved to Great Neck with my husband and children in 1976. It was a beautiful and vibrant town with a long cultural history and a strong school system for our kids. The schools are still strong, the gardens and parks are still beautiful. Great Neck is still a special place to live and the incoming residents who are new to the suburbs are embracing all the rich resources of a great town and a great community.
Michael Klayman Rabbi, Lake Success Jewish Center Rebecca Rosenblatt Gilliar Great Neck resident and writer We make our homes in a geographically special place, a small spit of land on an island surrounded by water. Elsewhere, people may have to adapt to life in habitats less than ideal, while we here in Great Neck have aquifers below us for life-sustaining water and the seawater around us for a vista that reminds us we live free. I am pleased that generations of the Gilliar family have played a role in this community for 150 years, watching each influx of newcomers demonstrate the wisdom essential for us to protect and maintain this special place. Despite vast social, religious and ethnic differences, the people of Great Neck have always demonstrated a deep and sincere concern for the welfare of our town. Whether issues involving education, quality of life, or anything in between, we are passionate about our opinions and in our perspectives about the future. My hope is that Great Neck will continue to flourish as a community welcoming to all of its citizens and receptive to the panoply of social, cultural and religious ideas/ contributions vital to our future.
Steven Weinberg Mayor, Village of Thomaston Great Neck is an ideal location. We have so many wonderful activities to enjoy on the peninsula and Long Island, plus we have easy access to all New York City has to offer. It’s a pleasure to be the Mayor of the Village of Thomaston and to live in a diverse community with friendly people who help each other.
