rene Rallis is not your typical real estate broker. A licensed corporate attorney and accountant (a secret weapon she loves to have), Rallis has been engaged in real estate as a licensed associate broker for more than 18 years. She considers herself to be an excellent negotiator and analyzer, a forte that has made her an impenetrable force. Her latest listing, which is featured on the cover of this special section, is a one-of-a-kind rare diamond, masterfully created in Manhasset. The magnificent French Normandy Colonial resides in Plandome Manor and is a breathtaking estate in its own right.

“I do commercial real estate but when it comes to marketing on the sales side, I know a lot about construction,” said Rallis, who has built homes herself, which is very valuable to her builder clients as well as her resale buyers. She sells homes all over Long Island but her niche is Manhasset, Port Washington and Sands Point. Rallis’ ideal buyer is someone who is pre-approved, motivated to move and someone who has done their homework with a knowledge of the desired area(s). “I think what attracts people to North Shore real estate is the commute (LIRR and major highways), the water, the schools, the culture, the shopping...it has everything for everybody,” said Rallis of why people choose to live on the Gold Coast. “When doing research, buyers should know their price point and style home, especially when it comes to their family dynamics. Do they have a large extended family? Are they in need of a nanny suite or a mother/daughter property? Size of property is also important. My ideal buyer knows they need to make some choices and be realistic about what their money can buy.” Fit for royalty, the home is nestled in a private cul-de-sac on a manicured four-fifths acre, featuring a brick and stone façade, high polymer-slate hip roof, porte cochere, Belgian-block drive, and circular courtyard. A true masterpiece, the 6,000 squarefoot property features six bedrooms, five-and-a-half-baths, soaring ceilings, sun-filled rooms, oversized windows, soft colors and warm hardwood floors. “This home is a little hidden gem tucked away in Plandome Manor,” said Rallis of the mansion. A true beauty to behold in Manhasset, those interested in buying or listing a home can contact Irene Rallis at 516-8835200 or email irene.rallis@elliman.com.

pon entry, a stunning foyer with barrel vault ceilings and an Arhaus designed candelabra chandelier greets guests before they are escorted into the living room, which features a white marble fireplace and arched window with custom window treatments. The dining room is a classic beauty with perimeter wainscoting and a crystal chandelier while the family room boasts four KEF two-way 8-inch in ceiling speakers with surround sound and sub woofers, custom built-in shelving units, a stacked stone feature wall and restored oak barn beams. The hub of any home is the kitchen and this grand estate’s kitchen comes with it all, including a 48inch Wolf stainless steel double range oven with griddle, Mont Blanc marble countertops imported from Italy, a 25-inch stainless steel SubZero wine fridge, custom cabinetry and stainless steel appliances.

hen My Father’s Place opens its encore existence in Roslyn this week, club-goers will once again hear the groundbreaking music the venue became famous for staging—what fans might not expect is five-star food from a rock star caliber chef. Swinging its doors open this Friday, June 29, My Father’s Place Lounge at the Roslyn Hotel returns in a new, intimate setting complete with a supper club and restaurant. And helming the kitchen for both will be executive chef Tomoyuki Kobayashi, a highly decorated and ambitious Japan-born and French-trained master of the culinary arts. It is Chef Tomo’s training and eclectic sensibilities that will separate My Father’s Place’s food from the stuff that’s served at similarly

styled venues. “I’m always ready to take any challenges that come my way, especially in the kitchen,” said Chef Tomo, who recently received a diploma from the prestigious Culinary Academy

While the restaurant will not go live until July 12 at the latest, the supper club will begin serving food and drinks to patrons as soon as the initial act hits that first chord. “Some of the most fun is during the creation of the menu,” said the chef. “It’s all about food and ambition. What can I create that people will love to eat, but also excite them enough to come back again and again?” While the final menu is still coming together, a few of the dishes club-goers can expect include Tiger Shrimp served with quinoa pilaf, roasted cherry tomatoes and petite peas touched with a herb-butter emulsion. Chef Tomo’s Tiger Shrimp dish is distinctively bold and sweet, with a firm texture—it adds up to a taste that some have dubbed “poor man’s lobster.” Another dish set for its debut is piquillo peppers stuffed with

Not Your Father’s Concert Food beef short rib atop puréed celery root and a bright citrus emulsion. With much more flavor than a red bell pepper but without any harsh heat, the piquillo pepper is sweet and slightly tart, making it a perfect match for the rich combination of braised short rib and the amazing celery root purée that boasts all the comfort of mashed potatoes. The dish is finished with the chef’s very own stock—a heady, hearty concoction made from chicken stock, sweet soy and lemongrass. Meanwhile, served alongside pomme frites is Chef Tomo’s classic cheeseburger. Fully dressed, the burger is served on an artisan bun with special sauce. Eaters can also expect salads, along with snacks and shareable plates. And for dessert, the chef indulges visitors with many, including warm, airy and delectably enticing French donuts—mini beignets served with white chocolate and Nutella dips. The growing menu’s influences borrow from Chef Tomo’s long and accomplished history in the kitchen, where he first cut his teeth with world-renowned Chef Christian Delouvrier at Lespinasse in New York City before landing in spots such as Alain Ducasse at the Essex House and Asiate in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, also in the city. Soon after that, Chef Tomo joined the Poll Restaurant Group, becoming the corporate executive chef. This foray made him intimately familiar with the Gold Coast area, as did his time as executive chef at Louie’s Grill and Liquors. But it’s Chef Tomo’s emergence at My Father’s Place that could prove to be his most ambitious culinary rock opera to date. “There is so much joy for me in cooking and eating,” he said. “I want to bring that to people and I feel like this is the perfect place for people to get to know me and my food.”

Magazine Magnates Once upon a time, William Randolph Hearst Sr. and Condé Montrose Nast were the kings of Sands Point estates BY JENNIFER FAUCI jfauci@antonmediagroup.com

T

he beautiful waterfront town of Port Washington is populated with sailboats, fresh seafood, luxurious shopping and grand estates. It is also saturated in literary history. Famed American publishers William Randolph Hearst and Condé Montrose Nast both have ties to one of Long Island’s wealthiest areas. Today, their publishing companies, Hearst Communications and Condé Nast, respectively, are the biggest mass media companies in the industry. William Randolph Hearst Sr. was born on April 29, 1863. The businessman, politician and newspaper publisher became one of the greatest names of his time and left an indelible mark on media as we know it today. Hearst entered the publishing business in 1887 when his father gave him The San Francisco Journal. Upon a move to New York City, he acquired The New York Journal. A pioneer of yellow journalism, Hearst, who was now in command of at least 30 newspaper chains, influenced the popularity of human interest stories. The brand expanded to magazines, with leading titles such as Cosmopolitan and Good Housekeeping at the helm. When The Great Gatsby was published in 1925, many believed that a certain Sands Point waterfront estate served as the inspiration for Jay Gatsby’s mansion in the book. Hearst purchased said grand estate of Beacon Towers two years later, a buy that included the mansion, adjacent lighthouse and keeper’s house. When Hearst purchased the estate—which he referred to as Joan’s Castle—for his wife Millicent, the residence underwent a transformation. Hearst introduced his renowned collection of global art, American furniture and French paintings into the home. But while he was filling his mansion on Long Island, Hearst was also busy

constructing one of the grandest palatial estates to date. His most famous is Hearst Castle, a Californian compound on oceanfront ranch land near the city of San Simeon. Architect Julia Morgan was tasked to design the 90,000-square-foot behemoth home that included

56 bedrooms, 61 bathrooms, 19 entertaining rooms, a private movie theater, tennis courts, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, 127 acres of gardens, an airfield and the world’s largest zoo. Today, the sprawling palace is now a museum. The publisher died on August 14, 1951, but 20 years earlier, had financial problems so great that he was forced to liquidate most of his assets. Dedicated to his love of the written word, Hearst kept all of his newspapers and magazines. Born on March 26, 1873, 10 years after the birth of his future

competitor, Condé Montrose Nast was also an American publisher, businessman and entrepreneur. Known for founding his own media company in Condé Nast, which includes Vogue, Vanity Fair and The New Yorker among other titles, publishing was a second career. Nast attended Georgetown University before earning a law degree from Washington University in St. Louis in 1897. Years of law school had not lit enough of a fire in Nast, who then embarked on his magazine career by working at Collier’s Weekly with his former classmate Robert Collier. Condé Nast was founded in 1909, four years after the publisher purchased Vogue, transforming it from a weekly newspaper publication into a monthly fashion and lifestyle magazine highlighting women. In 1916, the launch of British Vogue saw Nast become the first American publisher of an international publication, surpassing Hearst. Around the same time Hearst purchased his Sands Point estate, Nast designed one of his own. Known as Sandy Cay, Nast’s estate was designed in 1930 by Ferruccio Vitale. The vast landscaping and swimming pool highlight the mansion, which Nast was able to enjoy until his death on September 19, 1942. Unfortunately in 1954, the house burned to the ground, leaving only the garage. Two magazine magnates. Two media companies. Readers are loyal to Elle or Vogue; Harper’s Bazaar or Vanity Fair. While the two publishing houses create content around the world, let us not forget their founders’ quiet little spots on Long Island where it all began to blossom. A North Shore Staycation BY KIMBERLY DONAHUE

specialsections@antonmediagroup.com

L

ong Island’s enticement to travelers originates from the classic tale of the American Dream in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. The author piques the interest of many visitors and nearby residents by the descriptions of the luxurious lands known as Long Island’s Gold Coast. Though the infamous East Egg and West Egg are fictional and the celebrated but envied billionaires of the Roaring Twenties are long gone, it is still possible to be immersed in their culture whether on a day trip or a weekend getaway. Here are four “Gold Coast” hotels that are an escape from everyday life and open visitors up to a life of luxury.

The Ethos Of Design

Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Home Furnishings believe in keeping it comfortable BY JENNIFER FAUCI jfauci@antonmediagroup.com

A

new home is a blank canvas. Walk in an empty room and you have the opportunity to create and envision how you will spend your time there. Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Home Furnishings (MGBW) approaches its design with one mantra in mind: comfort for all. The residential and commercial furniture manufacturing company was cofounded by Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams, each of whom bring the perfect blend of business and creativity to make their brand so successful and current, almost three decades after inception. “I would describe my style as modern, but with a definite influence of traditional and country. I have antiques and 18th-century Chippendale pieces mixed, but it’s mostly modern,” said Gold of his home. “It’s a definite desire to be comfortable. A home has to be an oasis and a place where everybody, regardless of what their job is, can use as their refuge.” While Gold oversees marketing, sales and production, his partner, Williams, directs the design execution. Of his personal style, Williams says he accumulates quite an eclectic mix of décor in his home. “There’s a lot of stuff when you walk into my house. I’m a huge flea market and antiques person; I love things that have history that are not quite perfect,” he said, adding that it’s important to get a feel for a person when you enter their home. “I enjoy doing rooms where there’s lots of things on the book cases or coffee table; it’s interesting to see collections from childhood or travels and let people discover something about you that they may not have known before.” The ideal MGBW customer is someone who has a style sense like

It’s all about clean looking silhouettes and offering a variety of pieces that look very comfortable and at ease.

the brand’s founders, who note that they do not want to be a store that has several different styles, but can instead, create a space people can enjoy. Right now, several items from the MGBW home collection are having a moment, including a luxurious upholstered bed, incredibly comfortable upholstered dining chairs and the recent debut of the media sofa, which is extra deep and the only sofa you’ll want to watch a movie in. “We hope that people create an environment where they can enjoy the furniture and live in it,” said Williams. “A living room or family room where they can read a story, drink coffee or watch TV with the dogs, those are the most fun to design.” MGBW is all about living comfortably, which people tend to associate with lacking elegance. Gold and Williams strike a balance between comfort and style by blending textures and colors from room to room. Williams’ forte is adding depth to a space, which can be accomplished through said mediums. “You don’t have to have a ton of color; some of the prettiest rooms are monochromatic, but there’s a lot of different ways to incorporate colors: pillows, artwork, fabrics, etc.” said Gold. Referred to as the “masters of modern home furnishings,” both Gold and Williams believe the key to decorating a home in the modern contemporary style is simpler than one may think. “It’s all about clean looking silhouettes and offering a variety of pieces that look very comfortable and at ease,” said Gold. “We also know that people’s homes are very personal and not something we get a chance to redo constantly, so we try and make sure our pieces have a lifetime of looking good,” added Williams. “We want people to enjoy our pieces for a long time and not regret buying it.” Just as the fashion industry is ever-changing, so is the design business, and both Gold and Williams recommend staying

19

away from trends when decorating a home. Instead, look for pieces that will become stylish and classic, as you never know what could inspire the lines of a table or curve of a chair. “I find it exciting when something goes out of style and then 25 years later, it gets rediscovered and a whole new generation that didn’t grow up with it finds out about it,” said Williams. “I enjoy looking at that time period when pieces get to be in that period of their life and then make them feel fresh for today with new fabrics.” “Being with others, you get inspired by talking with each other and looking at design through each other’s eyes,” said Gold. Find out which collection inspires you by visiting Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Home Furnishings at 1900 Northern Blvd., Manhasset or shop online at www.mgbwhome.com.

Artist portrayals of the North Shore through art American artist Edward Hopper once said, “If I could say it in words there would be no reason to paint.” While authors such as F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway found their own words in novels to depict the beauty of the Gold Coast, others have found another pathway to beauty in art and painting.
