With the seasons changing and temperatures seeing an uptick, schedules shift from school to camp, meaning lots of kids wind up going to sleepaway or somewhere else for the summer. What are parents to do with this kind of downtime? Well, allow me to point out some options that our crack staff of writers cover in depth throughout the summer edition of Gold Coast Magazine. For many, home is where lots of entertaining takes place, so if you’re planning to host, Kimberly Dijkstra wrote a great piece on high-end items to fill out your outdoor space that includes furniture, kitchens and grills. And since you never want the fun to end once the sun goes down, Jennifer Fauci contributed a story on local companies that offer outdoor lighting options. If you, instead, choose to go out, Betsy Abraham suggests a bunch of spots, ranging from deck dining to an array of outdoor options. If you’re the seafaring type, Tab Hauser wrote a story that provides locations where you can dock and dine. Getting back to our main theme, there’s plenty to do at Camp Mom & Dad while the kids are away. If you’re in the mood for live music, Jill Nossa points out the perfect places to dine and enjoy some sweet sounds in Glen Cove, Sea Cliff Beach and Bayville. Stephen Levine tells you about places where you can rent a boat, be it a kayak or a sailboat. He also compiled a feature on extravagant day getaways that don’t require a lot of travel, like exploring Sands Point Preserve, strolling the grounds of Roslyn’s Nassau Musuem of Art or dining at the Garden City Hotel’s Polo Lounge. And, if adventure is more what you’re looking for, Colleen Maidhof shares where you can go rent an exotic car, fly from a trapeze or even go zip lining. We hope that with this summer edition of Gold Coast Magazine, you’ll find more than enough to fill those upcoming sunny days, while creating plenty of new and wonderful memories.

“In the past, we used to install fixtures between 20 to 35 watts. Now, we have LED bulbs that are between 3.5 to 6 watts that last for 50,000 hours,” says Dowling, adding that the price of such

hat does your backyard mean to you? Is it a retreat? A dreamy sanctuary of peace and tranquility where you can take a staycation for a day or two? Or is it the ultimate entertaining space for family and friends during breezy nights and summer barbecues? Outdoor lighting will help create the ultimate escape. Amy Dowling, owner of Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Long Island (www.outdoorlightinglong-island.com) in Carle Place with her husband, Dennis, knows how to highlight a property’s best features. “There’s a huge trend to the outdoor living environment. People want to be outside and enjoy their property,” says Dowling. “Lighting helps to create the environment, which is why more people are taking a staycation

lighting is now more affordable and more appealing to homeowners. Landscaping doesn’t just involve statues and shrubbery. According to Dowling, there are many trends in outdoor lighting that enhance a home’s distinctive features. She encourages clients to treat their outdoor space as if they were designing another room in their house. “We will walk someone’s property and work with their particular needs and budget,” she says of making each client’s vision unique. “We’re all about the effect that is subtle and upscale, yet very affordable.” For security reasons, a well-lit home is a safe home. To keep it shining each evening, fixtures can be set on a timer so they turn on automatically at dusk. But from an aesthetic standpoint, outdoor illumination can completely transform the look and feel of your property. Since many Long Island homes don’t have the luxury of being on several acres, it can be tricky to create a new world in just a few hundred feet. According to Dowling, popular nuances include pool fixtures in a variety of colors, path and deck lighting, as well as waterfall fixtures that illuminate the flow of water. These enhancements not only highlight a backyard’s key features, they enhance eye appeal and create an optical illusion of expanded space.

“Lighting is a very important part of the overall design.”

“The best lighting statements are made by whispering rather than shouting,” she says of accentuating features without detracting from your nighttime view. Outdoor Lighting Company (www.out doorlighting.com) in Huntington Station features an impressive array of interior and exterior lighting fixtures. From wall mounts and gas lanterns to fountains and landscape illumination, they offer something to suit every homeowner’s vision. According to Betsy Bibla, landscape architect and co-owner of Outdoor Lighting, landscape lighting items are the most popular buys for homeowners. “People are always looking The pool and gazebo shine— to improve their yard visueven in the moonlight. ally and LED landscape lights illuminate the home, giving off just the right amount of light for a beautiful effect,” she says. For an enchanted oasis, think hanging lanterns, illuminated fountains and strands of lights, all of which can play a part in your enchanted garden theme. Bibla envisions accent lighting and

low path lights to illuminate walkways as a more relaxing and reflective type of glow. Candles and dim lighting add touches of romance, while low lighting under bushes and flowers keeps your garden awake long after dark. Twinkling lights amid a cascading trellis set the mood for privacy in a fairytale setting. To bring a little old-world charm to your home, wrought iron lanterns—available in both gas and electric—add a rustic European flair to your outdoor space and are also available in copper finishes. If your backyard is the entertainment center of your block, make it extra special by adding a pop of color, such as blue, pink or green to a recreational amenity, so it shines when the sun goes down. Outdoor Lighting recommends what they call “carnival-style lighting,” featuring strings of lights with individual bulbs (white or colored) that can be hung on decks and strung along your fence’s perimeter. Flaming tiki torches (gas or electric powered) will give your backyard a tropical island feel, while motion sensor spotlights will keep the party going all night. If you have a pergola or awning, consider a chandelier or hanging pendant that complements your decor, but is large enough to provide ample lighting. “Without a doubt, people are understanding that lighting is a very important part of the overall design,” says Bibla. “It completes the picture.”

Do you dream of lounging lazily by the poolside this summer? Or, perhaps magnificent parties in your backyard star front and center in your dreams. Either way, many new outdoor furniture designs are available to fulfill your summer fantasies. Turn your patio into a cozy open-air space with these fabulous finds.

“The sectional is very popular right now,” says Carrie Leopold of Dodds & Eder. “It is sleek and modern, but also very comfortable.” With its deep cushions and built-in tables, you’ll want to spend all of your free time outdoors. “These fire pits are very modern and contemporary and work with a lot different grouping,” says Dottie Simons, also of Dodds & Eder. “They are probably the most simple to use fire pits,” adds Simons. They use bioethanol fuel, which is effortless to pour in. The flame is also easy to extinguish. There is no smoke or soot and unlike gel products of the past, this fuel is not combustible.

s the weather heats up, so does our desire to soak up the sun, breathe in the fresh air and prepare our meals outdoors. Backyard kitchens and grilling areas have become extremely popular in recent years— and as demand has increased, design and appliance options have expanded as well. Get in on the latest trend and relocate your summer cooking, dining and entertaining outside.

This Grillworks Architectural grill, installed with a new chimney on the back of this house using matching brick located by the architect, has the optional steel fire grates standing on the hearth.

Something new is always happening in the world of outdoor kitchens. “People are doing a lot of fire cooking, both indoors and outdoors, on grills, which we find to be a very good thing for flavor results,” says Ben Eisendrath, president of Grillworks (www.grillery.com), maker of Argentine-inspired, American-made wood-burning grills. Grillworks tackles design from an outdoor perspective. “[In the past], people had been duplicating their indoor kitchens,” Eisendrath says. “Since our grills have an open-fire approach, they are a great complement to outdoor designs.” The open hearth of the Architectural line allows you to see what’s cooking and therefore becomes the natural centerpiece of your outdoor living space. The line comes in widths from 30 inches to 60 inches, with many options available to fit your specific needs, such as placement of the crank wheel and grilling surfaces. Every Grillworks grill is stainless steel and built to order, by hand. “I recommend the Dual 48 Architectural grill for serious grillers,” adds Eisendrath. With a professional grill, the summer entertaining possibilities are endless. “Outdoor storage is the newest thing now,” says Mel Gassman (516-448-8970), a granite fabricator from Albertson. “Masons go out and build a wall, a big expanse, to put wood for burning, glasses, dishes and whatever you use.” An alternative to custom-built storage is prefabricated cabinets and drawers, available from companies like Viking (www.vikingrange.com; available at P.C. Richards) and DCS (www.dcsappliances.com). Outside refrigeration is also an up-and-coming trend. Gassman has even encountered a dishwasher installed outdoors. But to keep it functioning, you must protect it. Since Long Island experiences harsh winters, Gassman says, “You need a water system that’s

totally drainable in order to winterize it so the lines don’t freeze.” Similar considerations can be taken to protect granite countertops from the winter as well. This process entails using a granite cleaner and sealer at the end of the season. “If you want the stone to appear as nice as the day you bought it year after year, you can use shrink wrap,” Gassman explains. “Or you can let it get a patina and age naturally.” Every choice relates to the aesthetic you wish to see in your backyard. Gassman recommends Viking appliances for outdoor kitchens. Viking’s new

line of professional outdoor 5 Series grills are available in widths from 30 inches to 54 inches in both liquid petroleum and natural gas. This line includes built-in LED lights, which accent the control panel and illuminate knobs for better visibility when grilling at night. You can add a side burner, wok cooker, warming drawers, ventilation, undercounter refrigeration and stainless steel cabinets to complete your outdoor kitchen—and perhaps make it even more functional than your indoor one. “Once the grill, outdoor companion products and Viking cabinets are ordered from the Viking dealer, only countertops are needed to complete the kitchen,” says Brent Bailey, director of brand management. “It’s that easy.” Exclusive to the 5 Series is a 15,000 BTU infrared rotisserie burner, which locks in flavor and juices for perfectly roasted meats. Imagine a summer full of tender rotisserie chickens, juicy steaks and mouth-watering ribs. Once you’ve installed an outdoor kitchen, you’ll never want to cook inside again.

An outdoor extravaganza can be a massive undertaking for any host. Those who foolishly think they can stage a memorable party without any professional help are setting up themselves—and their guests—for disappointment, grill-shaped burns and sunstroke all in the name of shriveled hot dogs and overcooked burgers. Market (www.fairwaymarket.com), the well-regarded gourmet grocery with Nassau County locations in Westbury and Plainview. It is equipped to satisfy every culinary whim you desire. Fairway’s catering menu is extensive, from standard platters to fully customizable options. “We cater everything from small cookouts to larger weddings and other special events,” says Adam Miller, vice president–fresh foods. “But our summer offerings are unique at Fairway. We cater from the everyday to the upscale.” Aside from fully prepared restaurant-quality meals, Fairway also offers barbecue packages of premarinated meats, seasoned ribs and high-quality burgers. Fairway’s complete readyto-cook BBQ Bash includes grill-worthy boneless chicken breast or pork ribs, eight-ounce hamburgers and beef hot dogs, along

with sides, all the fixings and dessert. The market also offers a New England Lobster Bake, featuring all the classic seafood accoutrements, such as clams, mussels, chorizo, jumbo shrimp cocktail, corn on the cob, potatoes, coleslaw, baguettes, lemon wedges and garnish— they even provide the lobster pot. Fairway offers an enormous selection of prepared foods. From simple lump crab cakes to grilled porterhouse steaks, Fairway prides itself on being able to customize anything their customers desire. Its Complete Summer Party includes starters, entrées, sides and dessert. Fairway also prepares hero arrangements, as well as Mediterranean and Italian feasts. “If you give us 48 hours, we can do anything,” says Miller, adding that Fairway works with an array of reliable third-party companies that will set up, serve and clean. “Fairway prides itself on the ability to customize and think on our feet.” So, kick back and enjoy. We know our clients have been to other parties in the area and we know they want to top those other parties.” Along with his gourmet craftsmen, Naylor creates lusciously satisfying feasts of unique cuisine. Birch Hill Market offers aged in-house prime beef, organic poultry, lamb and pork, artisanal cheese and wild-caught seafood, which is delivered fresh daily. The caterer even makes its own sausage and bacon and prepares its own dressings, marinades, pasta sauces and ketchup. Birch Hill doesn’t have printed menus for customers to choose from columns A, B and C; instead, Naylor sits with clients to find out their likes and theme and then discusses how the food can elevate the party to the next level. “It’s all about attention to detail,” he says, adding that Birch Hill only caters one event per weekend to ensure clients receive the utmost in attention. “Our menu is 100 percent customizable. But it’s about more that just food. We also look at the space, make recommendations, find out if they want specific themes and find out what they are drinking so we can pair it with the perfect food.” Birch Hill also employs a staff to set up the event, serve the food and break it all down when the party comes to an end. It’s old-world customer service that Naylor says is Birch Hill’s specialty. “We are an old-world market and the relationships we’ve built with our clients is extremely important,” he says. What’s for

Dinner?

Simple, nutritious and flexible recipes for everyone at your table—from meat eaters to vegetarians and everyone in between—from Roslyn Heights native Peter Berley Quinoa Salad with Green Beans, Corn and Tomatoes Serves 4 to 6

Peter Berley is a private chef, cookbook author and culinary instructor. He has spent the past 30 years devoted to the development of local sustainable food systems and the fate of home cooking in America. He holds classes at The Institute of Culinary Education and The Natural Gourmet Institute in New York City, and launched North Fork Kitchen and Garden Culinary Studio in South Jamesport four years ago.

1 cup red quinoa Sea salt or kosher salt 2 ears corn, shucked 8 ounces green beans, trimmed and cut into 1-inch lengths 1 cup cherry or grape tomatoes, quartered or halved if small ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus 1 teaspoon if using pumpkin seeds ¼ cup pumpkin seeds (optional) 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice ½ cup fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves 2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped In a small pot, combine the quinoa with 2 cups water and ½ teaspoon salt and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat slightly, cover and simmer until the water is absorbed, about 15 minutes. Take the pan off the heat and let sit, covered, for 5 minutes. Spread the quinoa on a rimmed baking sheet,

set aside πand let cool to room temperature. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the corn and boil, uncovered, until tender, 3 to 5 minutes. Lift the corn from the water, leaving the water over the heat and rinse under cold water until cool. Drain well. Add the green beans to the water and boil, uncovered, until crisp-tender, 3 to 5 minutes, or longer if necessary. Drain the beans and spread them on a towel-lined baking sheet to cool. One at a time, hold each ear of corn upright on a cutting board and slide a knife down the cob from top to bottom to slice off the kernels. In a large serving bowl, toss together the quinoa, green beans, corn and tomatoes. If using pumpkin seeds, heat 1 teaspoon of the olive oil in a small skillet over medium-high heat. Add the seeds and toast, tossing until they begin to make popping sounds and are golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer to a plate to cool. Toss the salad with ¼ cup of the olive oil, the lemon juice and ½ teaspoon salt or to taste. Sprinkle with the pumpkin seeds (if using), parsley and chives.

Serve tofu or striped bass on top of this Quinoa Salad with Green Beans, Corn and Tomatoes.

cup fresh lemon juice ½ cup packed fresh flat-leaf parsley, coarsely chopped ½ cup packed fresh cilantro, coarsely chopped 4 garlic cloves, peeled 2½ teaspoons sea salt or kosher salt 2 teaspoons ground cumin, toasted and freshly ground 1 teaspoon ground coriander, toasted and freshly ground 1 teaspoon sweet paprika 1 /8 teaspoon cayenne pepper ½ cup extra-virgin olive oil 12 ounces boneless lamb, cut into 1½-inch cubes 8 ounces tempeh, cut into 1½-inch cubes Assorted vegetables, such as summer squash, bell peppers, cherry tomatoes and onions (optional) For the Charmoula (a Moroccan mix of spices and lemon): In a food processor, combine the lemon juice, parsley, cilantro, garlic, salt, cumin, coriander, paprika and cayenne, and process to a smooth paste. Add the oil and process until thoroughly combined. For the Lamb: Place the cubed lamb in a bowl, add half the charmoula and toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight. Soak four 10- to 12-inch or eight 4- to 6-inch wooden skewers in cold water for at least 1 hour or use metal skewers. Light a grill fire. For the Tempeh: Whisk the remaining charmoula with 2/3 cup water. Arrange the tempeh cubes in one layer in a large skillet and pour the charmoula mixture over them. Bring to a simmer over high heat, cover, reduce the heat to medium and cook until most of the liquid is absorbed and the white streaks in the tempeh have disappeared, so the color is uniform all the way through, about 15 minutes. If the pan looks dry before the tempeh is cooked through, add a little more water. Thread the lamb and tempeh (separately) onto the skewers, alternating with the optional vegetables, if desired. Grill the kebabs, turning occasionally, until well charred on all sides, 8 to 12 minutes.

What’s for

Dinner?

Charmoula Lamb or Tempeh Kebabs are delicious with summer vegetables and couscous.

The Gold Coast is a haven for artists and musicians.

n abundance of lush parks, beaches and open spaces within our quaint downtown areas have helped inspire an outdoor concert scene that grows every season. From the Friday Night Promenade in Garden City to the Tuesday Cruise Nights in Oyster Bay, plenty of opportunities are available for enjoying live music from local talent while sampling fare from neighborhood restaurants this summer. The best part is, these amazing venues don’t cost a dime. Friday night is the most popular evening of the week for outdoor music—and you can take your pick from a plethora of venues that suit your mood. Whether you choose relaxing with a picnic during a beach sunset or heading to a more urban setting, you can’t go wrong. For the past 20 years or so, Sea Cliff Beach on The Boulevard has played host to free concerts on the beach, mainly featuring local musicians. Several years ago, the Sea Cliff Beach Events Coordinating Committee raised money for a pavilion, complete with a stage and soundboard. “It has made a big difference,” said Justin DiPietro, chair of the committee. “We now get bigger bands and with the soundboard, the music quality is also better.” He noted that prior to the new structure, the stage was makeshift, with bands performing in front of the bathhouse. Now, listeners can enjoy a view of the water as well as the musicians. He said they give preference to Sea Cliff–based musicians and each Friday either features three different bands or one band playing two sets.

During July and August, Glen Cove’s Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) hosts Downtown Sounds in Village Square every Friday, closing off parts of Glen, School and Bridge Streets so crowds can enjoy music and dancing in the street. There are plenty of restaurants to try first, or make a reservation at Downtown Café to eat outside while listening to the tunes (see “Dining Alfresco”). The music begins at 7:30 p.m., providing ample time to grab a bite and then some lawn chairs to claim a spot near the stage. The event is produced through a partnership between BID and the City of Glen Cove, and features jazz, rhythm and blues, rock, folk, salsa and other genres. Free parking is available in nearby municipal garages. The concert rain location is Wunsch Arts Center at Robert M. Finley Middle School, 1 Forest Avenue, Glen Cove. Visit www.glencovedowntown.org for this year’s concert schedule, which has not yet been confirmed.

The season kicks off with a fundraiser for the Sea Cliff Volunteer Fire Department on May 30 with music by Live Stock, though the Friday night music series begins on July 10, which is free and open to the public. You can either pack a picnic dinner or purchase food from the Sea Cliff Beach Café. Bands typically play from 7 to 10 p.m. and rain dates are generally set for Sundays. Check www.facebook.com/beachseacliff for calendar listings. The Village of Bayville’s recreation committee organizes weekly concerts on Friday nights, another place to enjoy live local music outdoors in July and August. The Music Under the Stars concert series begins July 10 and takes place every Friday from 8 to 10 p.m. at West Harbor Memorial Park at 10 West Harbor Drive in Bayville. The free concerts are open to both residents of Bayville as well as nonresidents. Bring a blanket or beach chair; you might also want to pack a picnic so you can sit back, relax, have a bite to eat and listen to some great jams. The musical lineup has yet to be determined, but the summer concert dates for this year are planned through August 21. In case of inclement weather, cancellations will be posted on the village’s website at www.bayvilleny.gov. If getting out midweek during the hot and sunny months sounds appealing, Oyster Bay’s Tuesday Cruise Nights have become a draw for classic car lovers, as well as locals, who want to catch up with friends. Now in its tenth year, the weekly event begins on June 2 and runs through Labor Day. Audrey Avenue is closed off from 5:45 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday so car lovers can walk through downtown and view classic and rare autos. Sponsored by the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Chamber of Commerce, it’s free to walk in and $5 to show a car. Go to www. visitoysterbay.com for more information. The event also features live music and raffles and local restaurants provide specials. Head to Canterbury Ales Oyster Bar and Grill at 46 Audrey Avenue for fresh seafood, sit outside at Jack Halyards American Bar & Grill at 62 South Street or grab a burger at Taby’s Burger House at 28 Audrey Avenue. Finally, Friday Night Promenade in Garden City is an excellent way to hear live music and support local restaurants. The village sets up the stage for bands at each end of Seventh Street, between Hilton and Franklin Avenues, every Friday night from 6 to 10 p.m. in July and August. The first harbor on the North Shore, which I call “Exit One” off the Long Island Sound, is Manhasset Bay. Made famous as Egg Harbor in The Great Gatsby, there are four restaurants where you can bring your boat to your table. At the northeast end of the bay, La Motta’s Restaurant (www.lamottas.net) at the Manhasset Bay Marina has quite an extensive continental menu and every seat has a view. Outdoor seating is limited, but there’s lots of room at the outdoor bar area. Friday nights are especially fun, because the outdoor bar rocks with live music. Louie’s Oyster Bar & Grille (www.louiesoysterbarand grille.com) has roots here dating back to 1905. In 2002, the place was refurbished with a welcoming nautical atmosphere and seating is available both indoors and out. The menu is rich with seafood choices, including a large selection of oysters and clams from the raw bar. Riverfish on the Bay (www.riverfishny.com) is the first restaurant when entering the channel. Their menu offers a mix of salads, burgers, pasta, sandwiches, steak and seafood. Seating is available both indoors and out. seating. My favorite dish is the whole belly clams, which are always crunchy and fresh tasting. They also specialize in fried scallops, shrimp, flounder and lobster roll. The Town of North Hempstead makes it easy for boaters to frequent other restaurants along the water with the use of free mooring balls. Once tied to a mooring ball, boaters can call the water taxi or dinghy to the Town Dock or gazebo in Port Washington North. Traveling this way, boaters open themselves up to a host of restaurants options, including La Piccola Liguria (516-767-6490) for some of the best Italian food on the Island. Also within walking distance are Diwan Restaurant (www.diwanportwashington.com) for Indian cuisine, La Parma (www.laparma.com) for family-style portions, Dynasty (516-883-4100) for Chinese food and Ayhan’s restaurants (www.ayhansrestaurants.com) up the hill for Mediterranean fare. Moving east to Exit Two off the Long Island Sound, you enter Hempstead Harbor. Boca (www.bocakbny.com) is the sole dock and dine restaurant here at the end of Glen Cove Creek, where guests are met with lounge furniture and large rocking chairs in the outdoor area while waiting for a table. The inside has tall ceilings, giving an airy feel. Boca’s menu ranges from casual to upscale with a complete raw bar, a half dozen Mexican entrées, along with 28-day aged meat and fresh seafood. Two other restaurants in Hempstead Harbor require you to anchor out and dinghy in. These include Singleton’s Seafood Shack (516-609-0300) at Tappan Beach along with the Boathouse Waterside Café at the Brewer Yacht Yard (516-277-2088), which both offer a casual menu. Cruising east on Long Island’s North Shore, one of my

favorite destinations is Northport, which is boater-friendly since all of its restaurants are just a few minutes’ walk from the dock. My summer tradition is to call ahead and order Maroni Cuisine’s (www.maronicuisine.com) famous Meatballs and Pasta Hot Pot to go for an on-board picnic at the dock. Maroni’s also offers a gourmet multicourse tasting menu. Other places to consider are the upscale pub, The Ritz Cafe (www.ritzcafenorthport.com), Bistro 44 (www.bistro44.net) and its excellent continental fare, and the classic Skipper’s Pub (www.skipperspub.com). Whether you go for lunch or dinner, it’s always fun to walk around Northport after your meal. Gold Coast cruisers can expand their dining destination by heading west across the Sound to City Island, just east of the Bronx. Boaters can find a few dock and dine places that include the City Island Lobster House (www.cilobsterhouse.com) and the Sea Shore (www.seashorerestaurant.com), which specialize in large seafood platters filled with clams, scallops, shrimp and fish with a lobster or crab legs topping option. One platter can easily feed three. My favorite City Island spot is Bistro SK (www.bistrosk.com). To dine here, you get a mooring ball from the City Island Yacht Club and walk several minutes to the nonpretentious French bistro, which offers a classic menu at reasonable prices. For years, they have been delicious and consistent. I sometimes go for brunch, because it serves one of the best Croque Monsieur sandwiches this side of France. • At Butler’s Flat, you’ll feel like you’re at a New England clam shack.

Fly on a trapeze, learn to boogie, take a boat cruise, go zip lining, drive an exotic car or create a couple painting By Colleen Maidhof

ta s ie s

For parents who have little ones away at camp, summer can be a time for thrills, bonding and even reliving their own childhoods. Day trips, nighttime dates and new hobbies can be explored and couples can build exciting memories to share with their children when they return. Swing on a Trapeze

Take a daytime or sunset cruise with Freeport Water Taxi.

Learn to fly with your loved one by taking a trapeze lesson at I.FLY Trapeze (www.iflytrapeze.com) at Eisenhower Park or Long Beach. I.FLY offers daytime, afternoon and evening classes for all ages. If you’re interested in trying it with your significant other, a one-and-a-halfhour class is a good choice. “Some people want to try something new and thrilling together and some want to overcome their fear of heights,” says Anthony Rosamilia, co-owner of I.FLY. Ann Marie Cagnazzi, a 31-year-old student at I.FLY, loved her first flying experience. “At first I was nervous to try the trapeze because it was new and I wanted to do well. After jumping, I loved it and joined a class.” Going on a trapeze is safe at I.FLY. “There is a net underneath you. If you do a trick and you’re doing something wrong, there’s a harness on you and there’s someone at the bottom controlling your harness. They will catch you and make sure you land softly,” says Cagnazzi. Trying this new experience together is a way of creating memories. “It’s a bonding experience,” says Rosamilia. “Many people go on dates at I.FLY. You can cheer your significant other on and encourage them.”

Tango, salsa, swing, hustle, waltz or foxtrot with your partner at the Ballroom of Huntington (www.ballroomofhuntington .com) at 508 New York Avenue. Through private lessons and classes, the studio teaches adults how to dance. “When potential clients visit the studio, we evaluate them through a complimentary lesson to see where they are at. If they have no experience, they can take

a few private lessons, but we also have classes for all levels,” says Denise Defeo, owner of Ballroom of Huntington. Instead of attending your children’s recital, you can participate in your own at the end of the summer—the dance studio offers showcases every month. “It’s like a recital. Dancers don’t have to do it, but it’s something fun they could always look forward to. They could dress up, use props and show off what they learned,” says Defeo. She believes that couples who learn how to dance together can rekindle a relationship. “It’s a bonding activity for them,” she says. “It’s a way for them to get to know each other all over again and it can help them remember why they married each other.”

Take a Boat Cruise Sailing seven days a week during peak season, Captain Rick Cohen tours the bay with passengers on 60- and 90-minute daytime and sunset cruises. Harbor-seal-watching and eco tours allow passengers to get equally close to nature, while those visiting Freeport or Point Lookout can enlist the taxi services, which make it easy to visit several waterfront landmarks and eateries, including seafood haven Rachel’s Waterside Grill and Crow’s Nest Mini Golf. The boat can also be chartered for bird-watching tours based on the season, as well as fishing trips. The Freeport Water Taxi (www.freeport watertaxi.com) also offers summer wine or beer tasting on Thursday nights. “The sunset cruises are very romantic and relaxing. Passengers can listen to music, bring food and enjoy a full bar,” says Cohen. “It’s a great activity for a couple to enjoy and it builds memories.”

Paint a Memory Take a trip to Farmingdale for a paint lesson at Paint and Main (www.paintandmain.com) at 230 Main Street. Not only will couples spend time together, they will take a completed piece of art home to display. “The classes are designed for those with little to no art experience and we have couples’ nights where each paints a separate canvas that can be combined into one work of art,” says Reem Hussein-Iacovelli, owner of the art studio. “All the necessary materials are provided and the staff walks participants through each step. The class takes about two hours.”

Have you ever wanted to explore the treetops and go ziplining? The Adventure Park (www.longislandadventurepark .org) at 75 Colonial Springs Road in Wheatley Heights offers seven acres of woodland and 10 trails for all climbing levels. Couples can go during the day and bring a picnic or enjoy a romantic night when the trees are illuminated. Ziplining is a safe activity. Before you begin, you attend a 15-minute orientation session. Throughout your time in the trees, you are attached to a safety cable, so if you lose your footing, you are safe. Staff will also assist and advise you if you need help. “The park is designed, so you don’t have to be an accomplished climber, because we have multiple trails to choose from,” says Tony Wellman, communications director for Adventure Parks of Outdoor Adventures. “This is a bonding experience for anyone who climbs together because they are sharing a fresh experience and overcoming obstacles, which is thrilling and empowering. Everyone leaves the park a little different,” says Wellman.

SAILOR FOR A DAY Rent a boat for an afternoon at sea With summer just around the corner, there’s no better warm-weather activity than boating on Long Island. Whether it’s learning how to sail, competitive rowing or just renting a boat to relax, several businesses on Long Island offer a variety of options.

By Stephen Levine

Sagamore Rowing Association With a rich history on the Island, Sagamore Rowing Association in Oyster Bay is the perfect place to learn how to row in a community environment. The club is for rowers of all ages and all experience levels, but offers competitive rowing for those with a more advanced skill-set. “We attract rowers from all backgrounds and experience levels,” says Dana Pagliara, treasurer for Sagamore Rowing Association. “We also encourage people who are interested in rowing to come out and try this great sport.” The club has been around for more than 40 years and offers a variety of boats, including singles (for one person), doubles (for two), quads (for four) and eight-person boats, according to Manny Delgado, head coach of and program director for Sagamore Rowing Association. A variety of themed programs for all ages and experience levels can be taken at Sagamore, including learning how to row, rowing for technique,

technical aspect for rowing, fitness aspect for rowing and rowing for competition. According to Delgado, the club also features a great teacher to student ratio of 1:10, so people really learn how to row and gain proper technique. “Rowing is unlike any other sport,” says Delgado. “You can improve fitness while being outside and it is a lifelong sport. Whether you’re a seventh grader or in your nineties, you can row for the duration of your life.” Summer programs start at $250 for new junior rowers. Sagamore Rowing Association is located at Building H on 3 West End Avenue in Oyster Bay; www.sagamorerowing.org; 516-714-3247.

Port Sailing School For those interested in renting a boat or learning to sail, Port Sailing School in Port Washington rents sonar sailboats up to 23 feet and Beneteau sailboats up to 36 feet. Smaller boats cost $150 for a four-hour rental, while the larger boats cost $425 for a 24-hour period.

SAILOR FOR A DAY Prior to renting a boat, a sailing résumé must be completed online at www.portsailing.com/online_ reservations.htm, though it’s also possible to qualify for a boat rental over the phone by calling 516-767SAIL. Depending on prior sailing experience, renters may need to go out with a sailor before renting the boat solo, but ideally, experienced sailors can rent with just a short boat briefing, according to Chris Nihill, owner of Port Sailing School. The school also offers lessons for those interested in learning to sail, as well as a Wednesday night racing program, where guests can race the school’s sailboats from 6 p.m. until dark. During the summer, it offers half-day and full-day sailing camp for children at 8 years and older from Monday through Friday, starting at $545 for a two-week session. Port Sailing School is located at 86 Orchard Beach Boulevard in Port Washington; www.portsailing.com; 516-767-SAIL.

No time to get away? Spend an afternoon exploring a nearby town By Stephen Levine

W

hile many popular vacation destinations require a plane ticket or a long drive in traffic, there are many towns right here on Long Island where you can enjoy the perks of a getaway. If you only have a few hours to take a break from your busy life, you can mimic a vacation day by doing some of the things you might do when visiting an unfamiliar locale. Here are some nearby towns that offer a quaint shopping area for window shopping, an interesting attraction, an elegant restaurant—and, what vacation is complete without a decadent treat? Bonus: For these day trips, you don’t need to pack or fill your gas tank.

Glen Cove

From top: Hempstead House at Sands Point Preserve in Port Washington and the Glen Cove Mansion embody the Gold Coast era.

The Glen Cove Mansion (www.glencovemansion.com; 516-671-6400), located at 200 Dosoris Lane, is a great place for recreation, dining—or even a weekend getaway. “Where else on the Island can you find 53 acres off of the Long Island Sound?” asks Bill Dougherty, Managing Partner of Glen Cove Mansion. On the grounds, you’ll not only find tennis courts, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, horse shoe pits and a putting green, but a restoration of the original bowling alley is underway, according to Dougherty. Hotel rooms are available at this Gold Coast mansion, so visitors can spend a night or two on property. “Glen Cove is not on the beaten path, but it’s

a great little town with unique experiences and a lot of variety,” says Dougherty. In the area, you’ll also find the Holocaust Memorial & Tolerance Center (www.hmtcli.org; 516-571-8040), Welwyn Preserve (www.nassaucountyny.gov/2927/welwyn -preserve; 516-571-8040) and Garvies Point Museum & Preserve (www.garviespointmuseum.com; 516-571-8010) or you can hit some balls at Glen Cove Golf Course’s driving range (www.glencove golfclub.com; 516-676-0550), go boating, fishing or horseback riding. For a treat, Henry’s Sweet Shoppe (www.henryssweetshoppe.com; 516-671-3222) on 8 Glen Street, established in 1929, is a lovely old-fashioned ice cream parlor.
