Use Points... Travel When & Where You Want!

love to travel and while I’ve been to many places, the Gold Coast continues to be one of my favorites. The fact that it’s practically in my backyard makes it that much more special to me. For this issue of Gold Coast Magazine, we take a look at some of the unique aspects of this amazing area. We invite you along to hop behind the wheel and tool down the North Shore Heritage Trail, most of which will put you on Route 25A and have you step into the past while enjoying gorgeous historic scenery in places like Sands Point, Old Westbury, Oyster Bay, Great Neck and Port Washington. Managing Editor Sheri ArbitalJacoby turns to local politicians to ask them about some of their favorite secret spots, which range from Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth’s love of the Hempstead Harbor Trail at North Hempstead Beach Park and Congressman Steve Israel’s admiration of the Long Island Sound view at Greenport’s Kontokosta Winery to Councilman Peter Zuckerman embracing the tranquility of Clark Botanical Garden and Councilwoman Viviana Russell sharing the awe-inspiring beauty found at Zicana, a high-end luxury gallery located in New Cassel. With the hot weather finally here, Mara Bollettieri has pulled together an array of summer must-haves that include trendy swim suits, men’s, women’s and kids’ apparel, as well as personalized beach bags and other accessories for sun, surf and sand suggested by local merchants. All of this exploring and shopping will no doubt give you quite an appetite, so rather than go home and heat up your kitchen, Alexandra Civorelli shares a number of dining options whether your tastes run to gastropubs (The Brass Rail), Italian cuisine (La Piccola Liguria, La Bussola Ristorante) or traditional steak houses (Peter Luger, Rare 650). Alex also offers a number of great staycation suggestions—day trips that will take you to numerous destinations including Fire Island (Cherry’s on the Bay, Sailors Haven), Manhattan (the High Line, Chelsea Piers), Port Washington (Lady Liberty Cruises), Brooklyn (Smorgasburg, Coney Island, Brooklyn Botanic Garden) and Riverhead (Tanger Outlets, Long Island Aquarium). Philanthropy is also a major passion for me and many of the people who call the Gold Coast home. Sheri writes about two of my favorite organizations: the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center’s Friendship Circle and Old Westbury Gardens’ Gardeners’ Fair Preservation Project. The former provides financial assistance for JCC programs that improve the lives of those afflicted with varying degrees of dementia, as well as support and education for their families. The latter continues the refurbishment of the Barn at Orchard Hill, which will be used for environmental education classes. I hope you enjoy reading these stories as much as we did pulling them together. Angela Susan Anton Publisher

on’t heat up your kitchen this summer. All along the North Shore, a unique mix of high-end restaurants and casual bistros are sure to please every palate, whether you’re in the mood for an upscale dining experience at a steak house, a family dinner at a traditional Italian restaurant or a tantalizing treat for your taste buds at a gastropub.

Market Bistro Market Bistro in Jericho is known for its dedication to using the freshest and finest food from local farms, wineries and breweries. With a pleasing geometric bar, barrels of beer and a chalkboard highlighting local suppliers and seasonal offerings, the restaurant has a modern and chic, yet farm stand–like atmosphere. Lunch and dinner menus differ slightly, but offer snacks, such as market pickles; salads like baby beets; small plates like bison sliders and meatballs; and main dishes of risotto, rack of lamb, tuna and organic chicken; plus desserts like biscotti, McIntosh apple crisp and a stuffed brownie filled with homemade marshmallow and graham cracker ice cream. classic rolls, assorted sushi platters and Rare rolls, like the RareKobe, which has Kobe beef and avocado with spicy tuna and spicy king crab on top. Peter Luger One of the great American steak houses, with its original restaurant in Brooklyn and a second in Great Neck, Peter Luger is synonymous with history, quality and amazing beef. Its menu is very basic, with daily lunch specials of USDA prime cuts of steak and ribs, as well as options of fish, chicken and a burger, and dinner appetizers of salads, jumbo shrimp cocktails, extra-thick bacon and sliced tomatoes with the famous Luger sauce. The traditional dinner of steak for one, two, three or four, along with sides like creamed spinach and special German fried potatoes with Luger sauce, are what the restaurant is best-known for; but diners can also order lobster, chicken, lamb chops, ribs, and salmon or filet of sole. Desserts include apple strudel, cheesecake, fruit tarts and pecan pie, all served with homemade “schlag,” AKA whipped cream. For private functions, Peter Luger’s party room seats as many as 60. Come prepared with cash—the restaurant doesn’t accept credit cards. Peter Luger is located at 255 Northern Boulevard in Great Neck; www.peterluger.com; 516-487-8800.

Franina Restaurant With warm lighting, carpeted floors and a plethora of wine for both decoration and drinking, Franina’s inviting setting and food offer a taste of Tuscany in both its Syosset locale as well as the many parties it caters. In addition to its weekday lunch menu and full dinner menu, Franina’s catering and party menus offer a deluxe option, corporate lunch and fouror five-course meals that generally include antipasto, pasta, an entrée and cake for the occasion. Voted as one of America’s top restaurants in 2014 by Zagat.com, Franina serves food like salsiccie di cinghiale, which is grilled wild boar sausage, sautéed broccoli rabe and spicy cherry peppers, as well as a variety of pasta dishes, meat and fish. With its food prepared from organic fruits and vegetables from local farms and all-natural premium meats and pastas that are hand-cut and homemade, it’s clear why people choose Franina as their go-to catering spot for Italian food. In this challenging economy, many successful families are in complex financial situations or are just unhappy with the advice they are receiving from their financial advisor(s)—it’s not uncommon. We have found that a majority of high net worth investors would value a second opinion on their finances. In order to help people achieve their financial goals, we have created our complimentary Second Opinion Service. We are pleased to offer you and your family the same knowledge and guidance that the clients of Palumbo Wealth Management Group have come to expect.

Working with a team that redefines wealth management Ask investors to define wealth management. Actually, ask “wealth managers” to do so. You’ll almost certainly get different answers, and most are likely to be heavily focused on investing. As a client of Palumbo Wealth Management Group however, you benefit from a disciplined, experienced team that has a clear and comprehensive vision of wealth management.

Our consultative process We approach each new engagement with a time-tested, collaborative process. This allows us to have an open dialogue in which we learn about your values and goals, while working with you to tailor a plan to help meet them.

What to expect from the Second Opinion Service Our first meeting will be a discovery meeting, which is focused on gaining a clear, in-depth understanding of your values and goals. After the meeting is concluded, our team will conduct a comprehensive analysis of your current situation to identify any gaps in your current plan. We will then invite you back for a second meeting where we will address any issues that we identified through our analysis, as well as some solutions to consider. Hopefully, we can confirm you are on track to meet your goals. If needed, we will suggest ways in which we can help, including recommending someone else if we are not a good fit for your needs. Either way, you will receive both a Total Client Profile and personalized analysis of your current situation—a value in excess of $5,000.

rohibition-era bootleggers, desperate for a clandestine way to transport their moonshine whiskey and bathtub gin, found just what they were looking for on Long Island’s Vanderbilt Motor Parkway, the first roadway designed exclusively for automobiles. Privately owned and free from police jurisdiction, Vanderbilt Parkway offered the perfect conduit for so-called rumrunners to ferry their illicit libations from New York City to Long Island. Though Prohibition finally ended in 1933—and Vanderbilt Parkway closed in 1938— memories of that beguiling era still linger in the form of the North Shore Heritage Trail (www.longislandheritagetrail.com). Primarily following Route 25A, the Heritage Trail is a self-driven tour that offers a beautiful, accessible way to explore Long Island’s past and present. Step back in time and follow one of three drives to Great Neck, Sands Point and Port Washington; Glen Cove, Roslyn and Old Westbury; or Oyster Bay.

Great Neck, Sands Point

STOP and Port Washington 1

It was an altogether typical Friday night at The Isaac Guggenheim Estate in April of 1924: New York’s elite gathered for an extravagant celebration and sipped their forbidden drinks under the cover of darkness. Before night turned to morning, however, federal agents raided the estate and seized more than 800 cases of liquor, brought in by rumrunners via Hempstead Harbor and hidden throughout the woods. The quality and quantity of the confiscated alcohol was so great that it was proudly displayed in front of police headquarters as a bizarre trophy. Today, history-seekers can tour Sands Point Preserve (95 Middle Neck Road, Sands Point; 516-571-7900) and visit the Falaise, one of the only remaining early 1900s castles on the Guggenheim Estate and former home of Harry F. Guggenheim. The Falaise—a Norman-architecture, Gold Coast Period mansion—was where Charles Lindbergh and his wife, Anne, first heard about the kidnapping of their son. Tourists at Sands Point Preserve are afforded the rare opportunity to experience the grandeur of the roaring twenties through the mansion’s full display of original furnishings, antiques, sculptures and paintings.

Completed in 1906, the magnificent mansion at Old Westbury Gardens is nestled amid 200 acres of formal gardens, landscaped grounds, woodlands, ponds and lakes.

Glen Cove, Roslyn STOP and Old Westbury 2

In 1930, flush with cash and an unrequited taste for sparkling wine, Standard Oil boss Herbert Lee Pratt ordered 240 cases of French champagne shipped in flowerpots from Marseilles to his opulent Glen Cove estate, The Braes. Soon after, The Braes was raided by U.S. Prohibition agents. Pratt’s lawyers quickly went on the defensive: “Mr. Pratt did just what you or I or anyone with money enough to do so and a desire to buy liquor would have done.”

STOP 3

To William Robert Coe and his wife, Standard Oil heiress Mai Rogers Coe, one room of the 65 in their new estate was clearly more important than the rest: the den. The den, and its accompanying bar, was included in the mansion’s original 1918 blueprint and thus free from the laws of Prohibition that wouldn’t be set for another two years. Visitors to the Coe Mansion (1395 Planting Fields Road; 516-922-9200) can tour this beautiful, handcrafted bar and contemplate the inconsistencies of the Prohibition, when a bar such as William Coe’s could exist in the gray area between legal and illegal. Tours of Coe Mansion are offered at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. daily. After visiting the mansion, be sure to stroll through Planting Fields Arboretum’s gardens, greenhouses and rolling lawns. While in Oyster Bay, make time for Sagamore Hill (20 Sagamore Hill Road; 516-922-4271), home of President Theodore Roosevelt from 1858 until his death in 1919. A tour of the Sagamore Hill grounds offers an unparalleled experience for history buffs; the home has remained virtually unchanged for longer than a century. Visitors can see more than 20 rooms of the house, as well as

This is from Olivia Kim’s eighth grade speech — she’s been swimming with Long Island Aquatic Club for six years: “I have come to think of the pool as my second home and my swim friends as my second family. At every one of our practices, we learn about attributes that not only make us better swimmers, but better people. Champions don't just act that way at practice. Real champs are devoted all day long. HOME SCHOOLED IN THE HOME POOL The instructors at our pools are the luckiest people on the planet. We get to teach Long Island kids how to swim and maybe how to be champions. It’s no mistake that our discipline and love and consistency has resulted in sending swimmers to over 100 university swim programs, including all eight Ivy League schools. COME TO OUR GARDEN CITY AND SYOSSET HOME POOLS FOR 8 GREAT LESSONS Whether your kids are just starting out, or they’re really starting to get the hang of it, you belong in the Home Pool. We grow swimmers in Long Island and we take care of our kids.
