PGA TOUR Volunteer Challenge Begins At The Barclays From now until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27, fans are encouraged to visit www.PGATOUR.com/ volunteers and vote for their favorite volunteer from The Barclays. At the end of the voting period, the volunteer with the most votes will have the opportunity to present a $10,000 check in his or her name to the First Tee of Metro New York. In addition, top-ranking tournaments have the ability to earn additional charitable funding based on the total number of votes earned collectively by volunteers and the tournament. “The PGA TOUR Volunteer Challenge is a fun way to raise funds for charity and honor the contributions of the hundreds of TOUR volunteers who annually donate their time helping to orchestrate The Barclays each year,” said Peter Mele, executive director of The Barclays. “We encourage our volunteers to participate in this worthwhile program and ask their friends, family members and co-workers to visit the website and vote.” The PGA TOUR Volunteer Challenge will continue at 16 tournaments during the 2016 PGA TOUR season and build upon more than $1 million donated by sponsor Astellas to tournament charities over the course of the partnership. “Astellas is proud to partner with the PGA TOUR as both organizations share a deep commitment to the power of volunteerism,” said Walt Johnston, senior vice president, sales

& marketing, urology and hospital, Astellas Pharma US, Inc. “We are honored to be part of the PGA TOUR’s philanthropic legacy by collaborating on this unique opportunity to give back to the communities where we work and live.” The Barclays features 125 of the world’s best professional golfers competing for 2,000 FedEx Cup points in the first event of the FedExCup Playoffs and a purse of $8.5 million. This “vote-for-me” competition is designed to raise funds for charity while recognizing the talent, passion and commitment of the TOUR’s more than 100,000 tournament volunteers nationwide including 1,800 from metropolitan area, who have helped the TOUR achieve more than $2.3 billion in charitable giving. The Barclays will take place from Tuesday, Aug.

Barclays Back At

Bethpage

BY JOE SCOTCHIE jscotchie@antonmediagroup.com

The Barclays is one of the most sought-after titles on the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) tour. Originally, The Westchester Classic, the tournament took off in 2007 and has attracted the game’s top talent ever since then. In fact, Jason Day, the game’s top golfer, rank-wise, was last year’s winner when the tournament was played at the Plainfield Country Club in Edison, NJ. Day won with a 72-hole total of 261, tying a tournament record set by Bob Gilder in 1982. And so, it is most fitting that one of the tour’s top tournaments will be played this summer at one of the nation’s most challenging courses. When the PGA wants to give its stars a workout, it knows where to turn: The daunting Black Course at Bethpage State Park. Home to no less than five 18-hole courses, approximately 300,000 rounds are played annually on the five courses at Bethpage. The Black Course, as its name suggests, is the most imposing of the five courses. Measuring 7,468 yards, the course is a par 7, with the long fairways dotted by menacing bunkers and the usual yardage of rough grass. The PGA Tour has found the course congenial to its showcase event, the U.S. Open, bringing it to Bethpage in both 2002 and 2009.

Tiger Woods was the winner in 2002, while Lucas Glover took the crown in 2009. The 2002 Open was significant in that it represented the first name that tournament was played at a public golf course. The large crowds

Westchester Country Club in Rye. It, too, attracted the big names of the day. The inaugural classic was won, fittingly enough, by Jack Nicklaus, then the game’s dominant star. Other winner have included Gene Littler,

When it comes to public links, the Black Course stands near the top of the list. that congregated at Bethpage that year made an impression on tour officials. It came back, as noted, in 2009. Moreover, the Black Course will host the 2019 PGA Tournament, the last stop on the grand slam and the 2024 Ryder Cup. When it comes to public links, the Black Course stands near the top of the list. Golf Digest has named it as the fifth-toughest public golf course in the nation and 26th overall as the most challenging course, public or private. The Barclays matters as it is the first of four tournaments of the tour’s playoff systems to determine the winner of the prestigious FedEx Cup. The Barclays is not an invitational. It is open to the top 125 golfers with the most FedEx Cup points amassed during the regular year. The Westchester Classic began in 1967 and was played annually at the

Johnny Miller, Andy North, Lee Elder and Raymond Floyd. In 1973, Arnold Palmer won the tournament with a seven-stroke margin of victory, making it one of the last victories for the legendary golfer. In 2008, The Barclays left the

Westchester Country to begin a practice of playing the tournament at a different location in the New York City area each year. Among the courses that have hosted The Barclays are Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City and the Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus. In 2012, The Barclays came to Bethpage for the first time. It is back again this year and will return to the Black Course in both 2021 and 2027. Alas, it will do so under a different name. Next year, the tournament will be renamed The Northern Trust, even though the stakes will remain as high as always. From Thursday, Aug. 25 through Sunday, Aug. 28, golf fans will flock to Bethpage to give The Barclays the dignified farewell that it deserves.

In this challenging economy, many successful families are in complex financial situations or are just unhappy with the advice they are receiving from their financial advisor(s)—it’s not uncommon. We have found that a majority of high net worth investors would value a second opinion on their finances. In order to help people achieve their financial goals, we have created our complimentary Second Opinion Service. We are pleased to offer you and your family the same knowledge and guidance that the clients of Palumbo Wealth Management Group have come to expect. Working with a team that redefines wealth management Ask investors to define wealth management. Actually, ask “wealth managers” to do so. You’ll almost certainly get different answers, and most are likely to be heavily focused on investing. As a client of Palumbo Wealth Management Group however, you benefit from a disciplined, experienced team that has a clear and comprehensive vision of wealth management. Our consultative process We approach each new engagement with a time-tested, collaborative process. This allows us to have an open dialogue in which we learn about your values and goals, while working with you to tailor a plan to help meet them. What to expect from the Second Opinion Service Our first meeting will be a discovery meeting, which is focused on gaining a clear, in-depth understanding of your values and goals. After the meeting is concluded, our team will conduct a comprehensive analysis of your current situation to identify any gaps in your current plan. We will then invite you back for a second meeting where we will address any issues that we identified through our analysis, as well as some solutions to consider. Hopefully, we can confirm you are on track to meet your goals. If needed, we will suggest ways in which we can help, including recommending someone else if we are not a good fit for your needs. Either way, you will receive both a Total Client Profile and personalized analysis of your current situation—a value in excess of $5,000. GOLF LONG ISLAND • AUGUST 17 - 23, 2016

L

ong Island has long been a mecca for golf lovers. Back in the 1930s, when he was out of baseball and still hoping to manage the New York Yankees, Babe Ruth used to leave his Riverside Drive apartment every morning, drive out to southeastern Queens and play a round of golf at a course in St. Albans. After World War II and the suburban housing boom, many of those old courses were bulldozed to make room for residential units. Who would notice? The county still has many fine courses for golfers to go out and hack away to their heart’s content. As important, the United States Open and the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) tournament have long found local golf courses most congenial to their annual Grand Slam tournament. Throughout the decades, the Open has been played at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton (1896, 1986, 1995, 2004 and forthcoming in 2018), Bethpage State Park (2002, 2009), Fresh Meadow Golf Course (1932) and Inwood Country Club (1923). The PGA made it to Inwood in 1921, to Eisenhower Park in 1926 and Fresh Meadow in 1930. When it comes to public courses, all roads generally lead to two of the most popular golf complexes in America, Eisenhower Park Golf Course and Bethpage State Park. Eisenhower Park features three 18-hole golf courses open to the public: the Blue, Red, and White courses. The Red Course was designed by prominent golf architect Devereux Emmet in 1914. In 1926, Hall of Famer Walter Hagen won the PGA title at that course. The White Course was designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones. Jones also designed the third 18-hole course at Eisenhower, the Blue. In addition to the regular courses, there are two lighted 18-hole miniature golf courses. The Bethpage State Park Golf Course may be one of the most popular courses on the planet. Home to no less than five 18-hole courses, approximately 300,000 rounds are played annually on the five courses at Bethpage. The world-renowned Black Course, was the site of the United States Open in 2002 and 2009. Lucas Glover won the 2009 tournament, while Tiger Woods, then at the top of his game, won in 2002. There are other 18-hole courses, equally popular among Long Islanders. The Crab Meadow Golf Course in Huntington features scenic views of the Long Island Sound on each shot. The golf course is 6,574/5,658 yards. The Greens at Half Hollow features 4,100 yards of golf from the longest tees. This is a new course, opened in 2003. On the North Shore, the Joseph Colby Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course features 6,351 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 70. On the South Shore, the Lido Beach Golf Course also has a scenic location, being sculpted from land between the Atlantic Ocean and Reynolds Channel. This championship caliber course stretches over 6,900 yards and plays to a par 72. In addition, Nassau County features numerous ninehole courses when those monsters listed above just get to be too much for the average duffer. They include the Christopher Morley Park in Roslyn-North Hills, Bay Park in East Rockaway, Cantiague Park and North Woodmere Park. Christopher Morley, at 1,603 yards, is a hilly course surrounded by trees. It is the only county course located on the North Shore. The Bay Park course is located by the water, with total yardage of 1,956. At 2,282 yards, North Woodmere’s course is the largest of the nine holes. Cantiague Park offers flat and easy-to-walk links, with total yardage of 1,878. In Massapequa, another nine-hole course, Peninsula Golf Club, features 3,278 yards of golf for a par of 37.

Golf is a very enjoyable, challenging and frustrating game. There is one thing that every golfer uses to play the game of golf; the ball. It just sits there, high up on a tee or nestled in lush grass, mid to high weeds, behind trees, under bushes or in mud. Of course it also finds its way into water, but that usually means the golfer doesn’t get to hit it, they get another ball, put it in one of these places and then hit it again until it lands in one of the aforementioned places. Ah, golf is such fun, isn’t it. To enjoy the game of golf and play it reasonably well, you have to practice the skills involved with playing it, eyehand coordination, timing, flexibility, balance, strength, coordination and of course, patience and persistence. It’s also important to develop the skill of optimism because it’s an extremely important skill to have when you play golf. Then again, golf is a great game for you to work on a set of skills you need and use every day. Skills that are called different things: ‘people’, ‘life’, ‘social’, ‘interpersonal’ and today, they’re even called ‘soft’ (but they’re not soft at all). The one thing these skills aren’t is ‘technology skills’. There are no screens or keyboards involved in using them. Well, there are screens on ‘range finders’ that golfers use to decide how far they ‘have to’, and ‘would like to’ hit that little ball. But, after using the range finder, it’s back to using those basic physical and mental skills again and again. There are five skills which we all need to learn if we want to play the game of life well and enjoy playing it. They are easy to learn and apply. Everyone can learn them and they’re very easy to practice. And, once you master them, your ability to play the game of life is enhanced significantly. These skills help you meet people, engage them In conversation, earn their support and confidence and they can

HOPE SKILLS Bob Wolf

actually help you become successful... if you use them properly. They build on each other, the easier skills learned first, and the more involved skills later. You are able to use these skills the minute you signup for a round of golf, go to the starter and meet your playing partners. If you use them properly, the skills can make your round of golf very enjoyable...or miserable, the choice is yours. Okay, here are these simple, but very effective skills: first impression, interpersonal, communication, presentation and selling. I should tell you that some people say they are all communication or interpersonal skills. And, they may be right. However, just like the skills you need to play golf, you work on and practice them separately, so I’ve decided to separate what could be called communication or interpersonal skills and make it easy to understand what each skill is and how to practice it. Finally, the reason these five skills are so important in golf and life is because, like golf, every golfer plays with a ball. And, in the game of life, the one constant you play and deal with is people. When you master these 5 skills, which I call HOPE Skills, your chances of being effective playing the game of life are enhanced significantly. Bob Wolf is founder of HOPE Skills Presentations and a golfer who is constantly practicing skills for both. He can be reached at bobwolf@hopeskills. com or www.hopeskills.com

Etiquette On And Off The Golf Course When you arrive:

Remember, caddie programs are an excellent way for young people to earn some money and be exposed to a sport that they can enjoy and might help shape their character. A good caddie can make the round more enjoyable by giving you hints that might lower your score and can also provide information on yardage, club selection, reading the greens and the layout of the course.

Warm Up:

• Arrive soon enough to give yourself time to warm up properly. • Work your way though the bag, beginning with the short irons, moving onto the mid-and long irons, and then the woods. • Finish warming up by hitting a few soft wedge shots before heading for the practice green and hitting a few putts. • Don’t hit hundreds of balls and leave your game on the practice tee.

First Tee:

• Check the scorecard to learn any local rules. • Local rules apply only to the specific course you are playing. • If your playing companions suggest a match, make sure everyone is comfortable with the stakes. • Put an identifying mark on your ball

and inform the other players the type and number ball you are playing.

Avoid slow play:

• When your group is not keeping up with the pace of play of the group in front of you, walk at a reasonable speed between shots and begin planning your next shot as you approach the ball by studying the strength and direction of the wind. • When you reach your ball, check the lie, select your club, visualize your swing and shot, and then play your shot. • From the time you select your club until you actually hit your shot, you should take no more than 45 seconds. • If you aren’t ready to play when it is your turn, encourage one of your fellow players to play.

From beginning to end, here are some universal etiquette tips to keep in mind during a round of golf:

Maintaining the course:

• Replace your divots. • Turf tends to explode on impact, making it difficult to replace the divot.

GET TING RE

Use the toe of your shoe to kick in the turf around the edges of the divot. Many courses often put containers of a soil/ seed mixture on their carts and tees. Fill in the divot with the mixture. • Bring a rake into the bunker with you—always enter the bunker from the low side at a point nearest to the ball. Avoid walking on the steep face of a bunker. After hitting your shot, rake the area you played from, as well as all your footprints and any others within reach. Rakes should be left either in or nearby the bunker. • It’s important to repair any pitch marks or indentations caused by the ball hitting the green. • Using a tee, knife, key or repair tool, repair the mark by working the edges towards the center, without lifting the center of the mark. Don’t tear the grass. Finish by smoothing the area with a club or your foot. Try to get the area smooth enough to putt over. • You cannot repair spike marks on your putting line until after you have putted. • Don’t step on your fellow players putting lines—the imaginary line that connects the ball to the hole. • If your ball is on a player’s line, volunteer to mark the ball. • If your ball is not furthest from the cup, mark your ball, either with a plastic marker or a small, thin, dark coin such as an old penny. After you have marked your ball, place your putter down at a 90-degree angle with the heel touching your marker. Move the marker from the heel to the toe of your putter. Reverse the procedure to return the ball to its original position. • Don’t stand where you might distract a fellow player and don’t move. • Don’t make any noise when your fellow player is preparing to putt. • If you don’t have a caddie and are asked to tend the flagstick, make sure you aren’t standing on anyone’s line. • Hold the flagstick at arm’s length so the flag doesn’t flutter in the breeze, and make sure your shadow doesn’t fall across the hole or line. Loosen the bottom of the flagstick so it doesn’t stick when you try and remove it by pulling it straight up after the other player has putted. The flagstick should be removed right after the player has hit the ball.

• If you lay down the flagstick, lay it off the green to prevent doing any damage to the green. • Generally, the player closest to the hole will tend the flagstick. • After everyone has putted out, immediately walk to the next tee.

Miscellaneous:

• If you hit a tee shot into the woods and suspect that it might be either lost or out-of-bounds, play a second or provisional ball. You then have five minutes from the time you reach the spot where you suspect the ball landed to find the ball. If it is not found within that five-minute period, you must declare it lost and play your provisional ball with a one-stroke penalty. If you play the provisional ball and subsequently find your original ball in-bounds, you must pick up your provisional and continue to play the original ball, in-bounds. Outof-bounds balls are assessed the penalty of “stroke and distance.” • Never hit when there’s a chance you might be able to reach the group ahead of you, and anytime you hit a shot that you think even has a remote chance of hitting any other players, yell “fore” immediately, and make a point of apologizing to any players your ball lands near. • Yelling, screaming, throwing clubs or otherwise making a fool of yourself are unacceptable. • Moving on, if your group stops for refreshments, either at the end of nine holes (the turn), volunteer to pay for them, as well as drinks for the caddies. • Whoever pays at the turn should not be expected to pay for refreshments at the end of the round. • At the end of the round, shake hands with your fellow players, congratulate the winners, console the losers, and thank them for their company. At the end of the day, the great pleasure of the game is the time you get to spend with your friends, whether old friends or new friends you just made through the game.
