Lighthouse $100,000 Closer To Restoration BY SHERI ARBITALJACOBY

Senator Jack M. Martins has secured $100,000 in state funding for the Great Neck Park District to help restore the Stepping Stones Lighthouse. While this is certainly good news, an estimated $4 million is needed and, so far, only about one tenth of that has been raised for the historic lighthouse, which has been a vital aid to navigation in the Long Island Sound since it first opened in 1877. “The lighthouse needs so much that this is a very welcome influx of cash,” said Great Neck Historical President Alice Kasten. “Stepping Stones Lighthouse is both an important, functional maritime safety mechanism and a window back into our history,” said Martins. “It must be preserved for future generations as both a navigational aid and [an] educational resource.” As legend has it, back in the 1600s, the devil came down from Connecticut, which angered the

Long Island inhabitants, who chased the devil out. But, as he tried to get away, he threw boulders over his shoulder to stop them from catching him. While trying to escape, the devil supposedly built a path of stepping stones—like an underwater mountain range—to get away, according to Ronald B. Brinn from the Town of North Hempstead Committee to Restore Stepping Stones Lighthouse. The lighthouse was built to warn mariners of a shoal and extensive rocks that extend north of Kings Point, and was occupied by a succession of lighthouse keepers and their families, who had to keep the lamp full of oil and the glass continually cleaned. In 2005, the lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The Town of North Hempstead was given ownership in 2008 under the federal National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act. In an effort to make the rehabilitation a reality, in 2014, the town partnered with the Great Neck Historical Society and the

Great Neck Park District in a unique public/private association. The lighthouse has serious structural damage. Without repairs, the structure is in danger of collapse or being torn down and replaced with a navigational beacon. The funding will be used to construct safe, permanent dock access to the lighthouse so that critical repairs can begin. Currently, the lighthouse can only be accessed by boat during high tide. “Right now, there is no way to really land at the lighthouse, and one certainly cannot offload construction materials. So, a dock is a very necessary first step in rehabilitation,” said Kasten. “This grant is essential for creating permanent access to the lighthouse so that repairs and restoration can go forward,” said Great Neck

Park District Commissioner Daniel M. Nachmanoff. “We in the Great Neck Park District and the Town of North Hempstead, as well as the Great Neck Historical Society, are extremely grateful to Senator Martins for securing these funds.” This past spring, the Town of North Hempstead was awarded a $165,000 National Park Service (NPS) grant to rehabilitate the lighthouse, and is responsible for matching the funding. The ultimate goal is to not only repair the crumbling foundation, masonry, roof and interior damage, but to restore the inside features and create an understanding of the lighthouse’s role as well as the role of its hardworking keepers. Hopefully, one day, the lighthouse will become a museum and educational resource, and groups will be able to visit it to

What Does College Mean To Great Neckers? College—it’s such an imperative element to a person’s success in the future. But, to what extent should this element be emphasized? In our community, academia parallels meritocracy. In essence, those who are smart are well respected and are often praised in our school community. This intrinsic appreciation for academics impels many Great Neck students to consider the most prestigious universities for inevitable success. But, then again, to what extent should the prestige of the college be emphasized? It’s human nature to be inherently attracted to prestige. Success appeals to many facets of our society as we all strive to achieve the most success we can—whether it be financial, religious or emotional. This prevalent concept explains why the most prestigious universities are often the targets for many Great Neck students—Harvard, Yale, Stanford, the list goes on.

THE VOICE OF A GREAT NECK HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT By Warner Tsang This also explains why many Great Neck students are doing everything possible to enrich their résumés, both academically and extracurricularly. But, this prevalent concept cultivates cutthroat competition among students with everyone striving to be the best, because the best translates to absolute success. Achieving prestige inculcates an unhealthy attitude and misconception for students, who believe that in order to be successful, they have to attend the best universities. To an

extent, this drive among the students is beneficial toward their success, because it incites a persistent work ethic. But, then again, the prestige of a college is merely prestige, and doesn’t necessarily provide a comprehensive perspective into one’s success and shouldn’t be the defining proponent when making a decision of where to attend. College is where students determine the craft or work they aspire to do for the rest of their lives. Thus, the majors that certain universities offer are much more important than the status of the university. Many students even choose universities that aren’t as prestigious so they can save money for graduate school, which is what will really determine their work later on. The prestige of a certain university may look appealing on a résumé and may garner respect and approval from fellow workers

or peers, but the most important aspect of choosing a university should not be the prestige. Rather, there are a plethora of other viable aspects, such as whether the college setting is a good fit, whether it offers the appropriate majors and so on. Not much can be done to alter this “Great Neck mentality” towards academics as many students are brainwashed to direct their focuses toward prestigious schools. The drive to achieve fosters a strong academic culture, but it also fosters a burdening pressure that depresses many students. The burdening pressure deprives kids of emotional fulfillment, which is a chronic problem in such an academic culture. Nonetheless, it is the attraction to elite institutions that epitomizes the fabric of Great Neck academics. Look for Warner Tsang’s future columns in the Great Neck Record.

Why Ivy Leagues Aren’t Right For Everyone BY SHERI ARBITALJACOBY

Best-selling author and New York Times columnist Frank Bruni shared insights from his book Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be: An Antidote to the College Admissions Mania this past spring at Temple Sinai of Roslyn as students were trying to decide where they should attend college. While addressing the large audience, Bruni explained that although many people believe that attending an Ivy League school is the ultimate accomplishment, these exclusive colleges are not always the best choice for every student. He pointed out that when looking

at lists of winners of coveted academic awards and successful individuals at the top of their fields, while many did attend prestigious universities, a significant portion graduated from lesser-known small colleges and even state schools. He went on to say that many of these non-Ivys can actually be a better choice for students, given specialized programs and teaching styles. The evening concluded with a question-and-answer session from the audience, hosted by Rabbi Michael White of Temple Sinai. The takeaway: Like with most things, you can’t judge a book by its cover and you shouldn’t select a college solely on its name or status. Just because it’s esteemed doesn’t mean

it’s the right choice for every student. Plus, going into staggering debt to attend an expensive private school will have a greater impact on the graduate’s career as he or she will be forced to accept positions based on salary, rather than fulfillment. So, before assuming a student’s life will be over if he or she doesn’t attend an Ivy, research the substantial small, specialized programs. Applicants are likely to find a more suitable fit. To help raise money for the restoration, the Great Neck Historical Society organized lighthouse boat tours for July 10 and Aug. 21 at 1 and 2:30 p.m. each day. “The boat rides were spectacular,” said Kasten of the July 10 trips. “People were really enthusiastic to see the lighthouse up close. We actually added two more rides, as the Aug. 21 tours are, if not completely sold out, really close to that,” said Kasten, who noted that two trips have been added on Aug. 28. “Of

EDITORIAL Please Don’t Catch ‘Em All Murder. Robbery. Trespassing. Pedophiles. Spying. Infidelity. Identity theft. The wildly successful Pokémon franchise has been around for more than 20 years but, in less than two weeks, these are all things that have been associated with the latest location-based virtual-reality game, Pokémon GO. Businesses, museums, parks and virtually all places wanting to boost foot traffic are hopping on the bandwagon, advertising specials, incentives and discounts specifically for Pokémon hunters. I’ve even seen a university advertising use of the game as an incentive

to get potential students to register for summer courses on their campus. My cousin, who lives in Missouri, relayed what appeared to be a zombie apocalypse in his downtown area yesterday. He watched dozens of people holding their cell phones up to their faces and carelessly wandering through the neighborhood, which led me to think, I don’t want Poke-hunters wandering into my backyard. This has already become a problem, with reports of widespread trespassing and people putting themselves into dangerous situations to capture one of these virtual Pokémon monsters. I don’t know if this is true, but I

LETTER TO THE EDITOR The Completion Of Colonial Road Bridge Demolition started on the Colonial Road Bridge on March 30, 2015. This bridge allows traffic to bypass the congestion by the Welwyn Road Post Office, Shop Delight and LIRR train station. The demolition of the bridge and its ultimate reconstruction were steps necessary to allow the MTA to provide LIRR service directly to Grand Central Terminal for the East Side Access Project. Multiple governmental agencies were/are involved in the planning and execution of the East Side Access Project, and it was expected that the Colonial Road Bridge would reopen in June 2016. However, by Wednesday, May 11, 2016, the bridge was reopened to traffic ahead of schedule, with no fanfare, self-congratulations, fist bumps or high fives—

Cirque du Soleil Soars With Paramour BY BETSY ABRAHAM

The circus has come to Broadway. Cirque du Soleil—known for its touring shows that combine circus arts and street performance—debut Paramour, its first Broadway show back in April, bringing high-caliber theatrics and aerobatics to the Lyric Theatre. Paramour follows the story of Indigo (Ruby Lewis), a scarlet-haired singer who is discovered by AJ Golden (Jeremy Kushnier), a powerful movie director looking for his next star. With her earnest, doe-eyed composer, Joey (Ryan Vona) in tow, the pair head off to Hollywood as Golden promises Indigo fame and fortune while Joey tries to write the perfect love song. A love triangle predictably develops, which may be an overdone plotline but lends itself beautifully to scenes like “The Dream” and “Indigo’s Decision,” where Cirque performers capture the complicated emotions of jealousy and love through acrobatics. What the show lacks in storyline, it makes up fully in jaw-dropping theatrics. There is no lack of amusements with Paramour, as the show packs in flips, acrobatics, trapeze and juggling routines that will leave the audience breathless. The world-renowned Atherton brothers—aerial strap artists who dangle dozens of feet in the air holding onto nothing more than long straps—are one of the show’s best acts, as are acrobats Martin Charrat, Myriam Deraiche and Samuel William Charlton who dangle and flip upside down from a trapeze with complete control. Brilliant choreography and strong vocals shine throughout and the show marries well the mixture of Broadway theatrics with circus stunts. While the acrobatics take center stage, performances by Lewis, who makes a memorable debut, and the rest of the cast, help the whole show come together well. Residing at a stylistic crossroads that’s found them influencing legions of bands in the worlds of pop, hard rock, new wave, heavy metal and punk, Cheap Trick has kept the flame burning bright for American rock and roll for the past four plus decades. This year not only found the foursome of Rick Nielsen, Robin Zander, Tom Petersson and Bun E. Carlos rightfully and finally getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but the the three members minus Carlos (Nielsen’s son plays drums in Carlos’ stead) released Bang, Zoom, Crazy... Hello, the band’s first studio record in five years and one that has many calling it their best. The following are some other notable parts of the band’s canon you should check out. Cheap Trick (Epic) [1977] - A power pop masterpiece, the combination of killer guitar riffs and stacked harmonies initially went overlooked by American audiences despite the band’s ability to clothe bizarre topics

like suicide (“Oh, Candy”), mass murder (“The Ballad of TV Violence”) and pedophiles (“Daddy Should Have Stayed in High School”) in killer arrangements. With Clean Pass, her daily rides from Melville to East Williston and back have been reduced by about 25 minutes each way, which has not only decreased her stress, but has also saved her money on gas and allowed her to sleep later. Of the approximately 80,000 vehicles that qualify for the program, about 30,000 have Clean Pass stickers, and that number is continuing to increase, said NYSDOT Spokesperson Carol Breen. For this reason, concerns have risen about whether or not it will cause traffic in the HOV lane, but Breen assures that the program is undergoing further study in order to “ensure that the HOV lane is operating as intended, while still promoting the use of fuel-efficient vehicles.” Thus far, she added, the program has been successful, and will continue to be modified and improved according

Long Island Expressway commuters with energy-efficient vehicles are receiving several perks for helping the earth, as they save time, money and gas, and no longer have to experience the hassle of being stuck in traffic. New York’s Clean Pass Program, which was initiated in 2006, is a plan of action intended to foster the usage of more eco-friendly vehicles in order to reduce negative impacts on the environment. The program allows drivers with eligible vehicles to drive in the Long Island Expressway’s HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes without any passengers; the lanes previously permitted buses, motorcycles, and vehicles with two or more occupants only during rush hours—6 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 8 p.m. on weekdays. Though the lanes are open to other vehicles outside of peak times, being able to use it during these heavy-traffic hours gives hybrid car drivers the advantage of a faster, less-stressful commute. To use the Clean Pass Program, vehicle owners—whose cars must receive an average of 45 miles per gallon or better and meet certain emissions standards—can apply through the State Department of Motor Vehicles and will receive four stickers upon approval, according to the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). The stickers are free of charge; applicants simply must call or apply online. Audra Beberman, a Prius-lessee and Clean Pass user from Suffolk County, said the program significantly decreased the time of her commute to and from work. “I kind of expected it to be quicker, but I didn’t realize how much time I would save. [Prior to using Clean Pass] I would sit in traffic for almost an hour, for what should have been a 20-minute commute,” she said.

It was a beautiful day as we drove north on the 101 freeway towards Santa Barbara. The rugged sandy bluffs rose high along the California coast while the sunshine sparkled across the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Thing 1 and Thing 2, then 8 and 5, were trying to sit patiently in the back seat as we drove towards our campground. This was our first outing in our new-to-us, folding camping trailer. To say my heart was happy would be an understatement. I was giddy with excitement. I couldn’t wait to start making fun, family camping memories. Brent and I already had so many from when we were kids, and we wanted to give the same thing to our boys. Not only that, we were ready to relax for the weekend after a long week of work. We were ready to kick up our heels, sit by the fire, and maybe go on a few hikes in the Los Padres National Forest. An hour later we arrived at our campsite, and the boys jumped out of the van. They were busy checking out the campsite when I noticed Thing 2 wasn’t wearing shoes. “Put on your shoes, honey. There might be something sharp.” “I don’t have them,” he replied, playing in the dirt. What? No shoes? Of course, he has shoes. What sort of parent forgets shoes when they go camping? I started searching the van but no luck. In our excitement to hit the road for our first camping experience, we had let him run out the door happy but barefoot. Ooops. Determined not to let this ruin our weekend, we headed up to the camp store. There we bought a pair of flip-flops that he could wear to protect his feet. We may not be going on any long hikes over the weekend, but they would be perfect to wear to the swimming hole on the Santa Ynez River. Wondering if there are things to do (besides remember your child’s shoes.) to make your first time out in your new RV go more smoothly? Read on.

Making a list is probably your most important step. Make copies and give them to all your readers in the family so they can help pack up. Divide your lists into categories: kitchen, meals, bathroom, outdoor activities (bikes, balls, firewood, etc.), indoor activites (games, movies, etc.), pets, family member A, B, C, etc., and don’t forget to include yourself. Start packing a few days ahead of time to avoid the last minute rush. Cross things off as you pack them and just before you pull out of your driveway, take a quick glance at your list to make sure you have everything.

Practice Parking or Driving If you are worried about backing up or driving the RV around, take it out for some practice without the family. It’s a lot easier to practice without kids playing (or arguing) in the back seat. Choose a Saturday or Sunday morning when the roads are less crowded, and drive around a bit. Find a large parking lot with plenty of empty space and back it up a few times. You’ll be surprised at how much easier it gets with a little practice. It won’t be long until you feel like a pro.

Research Test Run Most RVs are so easy to set up you could do it in your sleep, but it doesn’t hurt to do a little test run. Set up your RV in your driveway before you head out. In fact, you may want to do this a few times if you are feeling nervous. Better to figure out how to work the jacks before getting to a campsite after a long drive when you (and everyone else) may be tired. If your RV has slides, always do a slide check when setting or packing up to make sure nothing gets smashed in the slide. Trust us on this one.

A little research ahead of time goes a long way. We are all for spontaneity, but for your first trip in your RV I suggest you have reservations. Double-check that the campground has the amenities you want. If you want electricity, water and sewer, be sure to ask for a full hookup site. You can even ask for a pullthrough site if you are not quite ready for a back-in site. While you are on the Internet, do a quick search for things to do in the area and take a few notes (I take screenshots on my phone and save them to my camera roll). This way if you get to your destination and suddenly realize you don’t have cell phone reception, you’ll still have an idea of what’s in the area. Also don’t forget to double-check your route on the GPS before pulling out of the driveway.

Birnbaum worked with the NICE bus service to add a seasonal stop to the Nassau Inter-County Express N-58 route at the west corner of Steppingstone Lane and Sunset Road for those who would like to visit Steppingstone Park this summer to enjoy a picnic, weekend concert, dinner cruise from the marina or stroll to marvel at the Long Island Sound views. Children can swim in the kiddie pool, cool off under the water pad sprinklers and enjoy the playground. Guests must show a park card at the gate or be a guest of a resident with a valid park card. The bus will run through Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 5.

Let’s Celebrate Life with Poet Vincent J. Tomeo Come to this special program with award-winning poet Vincent J. Tomeo when he will Celebrate Life: Watching Words Come Alive with Poetry and Slides at 2 p.m. at the Station Branch, The Gardens at Great Neck Plaza, 26 Great Neck Rd., second level, above Best Market. This widely published poet will take the audience on a journey, somewhere between their hearts and their minds, to see things differently, fresh and anew as he weaves his poetry into a slide presentation celebrating life. Tomeo will talk about how he came to write each poem and answer questions from the audience. Tomeo was a teacher for 36 years, 31 of them in the public school system and three years in the Municipal Archives of New York City, where he taught records management. Tomeo is also a local historian specializing in Corona, Queens, where he grew up. He has produced several exhibitions on Corona’s history that were on display at various locations including the Queens Museum, the Municipal Archives of the City of New York and the main branch of the Jamaica Public Library. Tomeo has 736 published poems and performs poetry readings at various functions and locations throughout the world. He also volunteers for the 9/11 Tribute Center at Ground Zero. Designed to raise awareness about skin cancer, the Skin-telligence program will be returning again this year thanks to Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel and the Colette Coyne Melanoma Awareness Campaign (CCMAC). “As more people head outside to enjoy the summer weather, it’s important that they know how dangerous the sun’s rays can be to their skin and how to best protect themselves from developing skin cancer,” said Schimel. “The CCMAC has once again generously agreed to partner with us to help spread the word about this summer danger.” According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, accounting for roughly half of all cases diagnosed in the United States. A pale complexion, family history of skin cancer, severe sunburns or exposure to carcinogens can increase a person’s likelihood for developing skin cancer, but virtually everyone is at risk. “In 1998, our daughter was diagnosed at 29 and passed five and a half months later,” said Colette Coyne, cofounder and executive director at CCMAC. “Statistics indicated at that time that one in 75 would be diagnosed in their lifetime.

Today, the American Cancer Society tells us one in 50 will experience this disease, which if not caught early is deadly. Assemblywoman Schimel is among the few who recognizes the importance of our message of prevention.” Skin-telligence will be held at several public pools across the area, where attendees will have the opportunity to speak directly to Schimel and her staff at the following locations:

She was born Barbara Ruth Craft in Ferriday, LA. She was a Great Neck resident for 63 years, and in her younger years, she was very active with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation and the North Shore Animal League. Barbara was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and dear friend to

many and always had time for others. She worked for many years in the restaurant business, which included the Scobee Grill, Greenbrier and Seven Seas on Northern Boulevard. Israel Tennis For At-Risk Girls To Be Discussed BY MIRIAM CHATINOVER

Peter Wayne will speak about the Israel Tennis Centers (ITC), which serve at-risk adolescent Israeli girls residing in underprivileged neighborhoods, on Monday, July 25. Presented by the National Council of Jewish Women–Lakeville Section and Temple Emanuel of Great Neck, the presentation will begin at 1 p.m. The centers began in 1976 by visionaries from Israel, the United States and the United Kingdom, who realized their dream and opened a center for tennis in Israel. Since the first center opened in Ramat Hasharon, north of Tel Aviv, 13 more tennis centers have been built predominately in underprivileged neighborhoods throughout Israel.

Today, ITC is one of Israel’s largest social-service organizations for children, providing comprehensive educational programs and social services that empower Israeli children. While the mission of the Tennis Centers is to employ the sport of tennis to enhance the social, psychological and physical development of children in one of the most conflicted regions in the world, ITC’s true impact is its ability to engage more than 20,000 youths annually—and more than 500,000 since its inception—many of whom endure serious hardships and reside on the fringes of Israeli society. The talk is open to the community at no charge, so come and bring your friends. Refreshments and dessert will be served at noon, prior to the program. Temple Emanuel is located at 150 Hicks Lane.
