The Key To Health: What Every Man Should Do BY MYLES GOLDMAN specialsections@antonmediagroup.com

S

taying healthy is the key to a successful life for everyone. While there are many things you could do for your health, you may not know what to do first. In honor of June being Men’s Health Month, below are five simple health checks every man should do.

Get an annual physical

Getting a physical examination from your doctor is very important as you may have an underlying disease or illness you may not even know about. As you get older, your doctor may examine areas of your body that may be uncomfortable such as your prostate and genitalia. The better shape you are in, the quicker your examination will go. The more frequently you get a physical, you can be on top of any sight changes in your BMI, so if it raises at all since your last visit, you can change your lifestyle before it gets worse.

See your urologist

While it is very rare, affecting only 20,000 people per year according to the Mayo Clinic, testicular cancer is no laughing matter. Testing for testicular cancer is very simple; your doctor will check for any growths on your testicles and run some blood work or scans. While the causes of testicular cancer are unknown, the survival rate is still pretty high. However, that’s if cancer hasn’t spread to another part of your body. Another reason to see a urologist is because of prostate cancer, which can turn into colon cancer. The issue with prostate cancer is that the symptoms can either be unnoticeable. Tests for prostate and colon cancer are similar so one trip to the urologist can make a huge difference.

Get tested for skin cancer

Getting tested for skin cancer is as simple as a checkup by your

dermatologist. During the examination, the doctor will check the size of any moles or lesions you may have on your body, check your lymph nodes. Typically, any signs of skin cancer will form around the age 50 but can be from large amounts of sun exposure from years earlier. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, affecting over one million people in the U.S. alone. Even if you have existing moles on your body you were born with can develop into skin cancer. As always, wear sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors in the heat for prolonged periods of time.

Check your testosterone levels

This test can affect not only you but also the people closest to you. Low testosterone levels can cause fatigue, agitation, loss of sex drive, stress, weight loss and severe depression. Low testosterone levels can cause a man to develop irritable male syndrome.

Fortunately, testosterone levels can be measured by having your blood taken. Healthy testosterone levels can be achieved again by weightlifting, anti-depressants, exercise and a change of diets such as less sugar intake and more protein.

Visit your Cardiologist

Affecting more than three million people per-year, coronary heart disease is the most common cause of death in the United States and is more common in men. In 2013, one in every four men will die from heart disease, according to the CDC. Coronary heart disease is caused by plaque build-up, which hardens which then clogs your arteries, preventing blood flow causing a heart attack. Smoking, stress, high sugar levels, fatty foods and high blood pressure cause coronary heart disease. Unfortunately, plaque build-up cannot completely go away on by itself. Usually, cardiologists will perform a bypass surgery, which removes the plaque build-up.

In The Know: Protein Powder

rotein powder first grew its popularity in the athletic and bodybuilder community, but it has become a mainstream item for individuals of all activity levels. Protein itself is one of the three macronutrients, and is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, and blood. Your body uses protein to build and repair tissues and make certain enzymes and hormones. Protein powder provides an easy meal replacement or post-workout shake to help you preserve lean body mass and maximize your body composition. Protein powder should supplement a healthy diet, and it is only a small piece of the puzzle towards good nutrition. You need to eat well and train properly, or else all the protein powders in the world won’t help you get stronger. Here are a few key tips to keep in mind when shopping for a protein powder:

Look For Minimal Ingredients

You want to fuel your body in the best and most natural way possible. Be sure to read over the ingredients label on your protein powder to make sure you aren’t filling your body with chemicals and artificial sweeteners. You should be able to pronounce and understand every ingredient on the label of your protein powder. If you are stuck deciding between two protein powders, pick the one with the fewer ingredients. Try to avoid protein powders with artificial sweeteners like sucralose and aspartame, which can have several negative side effects including headaches and bloat.

Watch Out For Too Much Protein

Although protein is a crucial macronutrient, even too much of a good thing can cause harm. Some protein

CHOOSING HEALTH Stefani Pappas

powders may contain a lot more protein than you need, especially powders that are marketed towards bodybuilders. Believe it or not, excess protein can be stored as body fat. Plus, too much protein at once can be hard to digest and may cause nausea and bloating. Try not to exceed 30g of protein per serving of powder.

Don’t Forget About Consistency

Some protein powders can taste grainy or have a chalk-like consistency. Make sure that your protein powder can blend well and doesn’t require too many additional ingredients. A simple protein shake should include a scoop of protein powder, 1 cup of fresh or frozen fruit, and a liquid base such as almond milk. If your protein powder is still feeling gritty after blending, give another one a try and be sure to read reviews online

to see what other consumers have to say. Typically whey protein isolate is a bit smoother than plant-based powders. If you are a healthy and physically active adult, protein powder can help improve your overall body composition and maximize lean muscle mass. Your recommended amount of protein intake can vary based on your height, weight, and activity level. Speak with a registered dietitian that can help you determine how much protein you should consume in a day. Stefani Pappas, MS, RDN, CDN, CPT, is a Clinical Dietitian Nutritionist at St. Francis Hospital. She also provides private and group nutrition counseling at her office in Great Neck, NY. Is Regenerative Medicine The Answer To Arthritic Aches And Pains? Stem cell therapy is a promising new regenerative medicine treatment Orlin & Cohen Orthopedic Group uses for many orthopedic conditions, especially arthritis. When you have arthritis, the cartilage that lines the bones has worn out. For example, in the knee of a healthy person, the cartilage on the end of the thighbone glides smoothly against the cartilage on top of the shinbone. In an arthritis sufferer, the bones rub against one another painfully. Approximately 54 million adults and 300,000 babies and children in the U.S. have been diagnosed. The condition is more common in women than in men and nearly half of U.S. adults with heart disease or diabetes and one-third of people suffering with obesity also have arthritis. According to the CDC, the total of the national arthritis-attributable medical care costs combined with earnings losses among adults with arthritis is $303.5 billion. Arthritis is a common, but difficult to treat, condition. Options include pills, shots, and finally, joint replacement therapy. Stem cell therapy may be a good alternative for people who do not yet want to consider surgery. Effective and noninvasive, stem cell therapy can show results in as little as five weeks. Simply put, a stem cell is part of your body’s

infinite “repair system.” Once divided, it may remain a stem cell or become another functional cell. Stem cells originate from a multitude of sources—the Orlin & Cohen team of subspecialists uses stem cells obtained from the patient’s own stomach body fat. Six to 10 teaspoons of fat are obtained through a small liposuction procedure and the stem cells are separated from the rest of the fat. Blood is also

drawn and its platelets separated and concentrated. The stem cells are combined with this platelet rich plasma (PRP), which is vital to healing, and injected where needed. Orlin & Cohen has also found regenerative medicine to be a beneficial treatment for ligament damage, where injuries occur when the flexible muscle that connects the body’s bones is stretched too far and can range from mild to moderate to complete tears; muscle tears, which are caused by overloaded muscles, resulting in anything from mild pain to complete muscle ruptures and plantar fasciitis, for which more than 2 million patients are treated annually for this heel pain caused by the irritation and inflammation of the band of tissue that supports the foot’s arch. Regenerative medicine has also been beneficial for tendonitis, the inflammation of the thick cords that attach muscle to bone is typically marked by joint or limb pain, tenderness and mild swelling. Stem cell therapy is particularly successful with difficult-to-treat tendonitis of the elbow (tennis elbow). If you or someone you know is suffering from arthritis or another orthopedic condition, regenerative medicine may be an excellent and effective alternative to surgery. Neurosurgeon Hails FDA Approval Of New Brain Therapy For Epilepsy

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved a new deep brain stimulation (DBS) therapy for people with epilepsy, and Brian J. Snyder, M.D., FAANS, applauds the decision. Premarket approval for Medtronic’s Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) therapy was granted by the FDA as adjunctive treatment for partial-onset seizures and is a significant development for patients whose seizures have proven

to be drug-resistant. “Many patients with severe epilepsy are not able to control their seizures with currently available drugs and are not candidates for curative surgery, may be helped by this new DBS therapy,” said Snyder. As Director of Functional and Restorative Neurosurgery at NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola, Snyder has performed hundreds of DBS procedures and is the most experienced

surgeon on Long Island performing this procedure. “DBS therapy for epilepsy delivers controlled electrical pulses to target in the brain called the anterior nucleus of the thalamus (ANT), which is part of a network involved in seizures,” he said. “Few therapies are as versatile

as DBS, which is also approved for Parkinson’s Disease (PD), dystonia, essential tremor, and obsessive compulsive disorder.” To schedule an appointment with Dr. Snyder to determine if you might benefit from DBS, call 516-442-2250. —Anton Media Staff

“My doctor told me that my blood iron levels are high. I am a 45 year-old father of two young boys. I feel fine and am healthy. Do I need to be concerned?” This is a very common reason why people visit either a liver or blood specialist for a consultation. There are many causes of high blood iron levels including previous blood transfusions, alcohol use, certain hematologic disorders such as thalassemia, and hereditary hemochromatosis. Of these disorders, hereditary hemochromatosis is the most common and worrisome. Hereditary hemochromatosis is a genetic disorder which leads to increased absorption of iron by the small intestine. Normally, the body has a regulatory mechanism by which only a fixed amount of iron will be absorbed. In hereditary hemochromatosis, this regulatory mechanism is disrupted and there is no control on the amount of iron absorbed. The absorbed iron is transferred and deposited in several organs such as the liver, heart, pancreas, skin and joints. The increase in iron stores can lead to problems

Iron Clad What happens when you

such as cirrhosis, diabetes, heart disease, bronze skin and joint pains. Most patients with

hereditary hemochromatosis do not know they have it. Occasionally, young people may first be diagnosed with hereditary hemochromatosis after having an irregular heart beat. This may occur particularly after taking vitamin C, which leads to increases the amount of iron absorbed by the small intestine. Most people with this disorder have no symptoms until they reach their 40s or 50s as the accumulation of iron in the tissues is a life-long process. When symptoms occur, the most common ones are fatigue, impotence,

joint pains or symptoms related to new-onset diabetes. Many people with hereditary hemochromatosis will develop cirrhosis and 30 percent will develop liver cancer, which is the most common cause of death in these patients. Hereditary hemochromatosis is the most common inherited autosomal recessive liver disease in Caucasian populations but can be found in all peoples. About one in ten people are carriers of the gene causing this disease and one in 300 people have the disease. The diagnosis of hemochromatosis is made

through a combination of serum iron and ferritin levels, genetic testing, MRI findings and /or liver biopsy with specific testing of the hepatic iron index. The treatment of hemochromatosis is phlebotomy or removal of blood until iron and ferritin levels normalize. Once levels normalize, phlebotomy is usually performed three to four times a year in order to maintain normal levels. For those patients unable to undergo phlebotomy because of heart disease, anemia or poor venous access, oral iron chelation therapy is available. If treatments are initiated before cirrhosis appears or heart disease occurs, all potential long-term complications of this disease can be prevented. The key to treatment of this disease is to catch it early. It’s important that all people be screened for this condition with iron studies. Once someone is diagnosed with hemochromatosis, it is important to screen immediate family for its presence. This is a hereditary disease so if one member of the family has it, it’s likely that other members have it is as well.

NYU Winthrop Nurse Manager Awarded ‘Nurse Of Excellence 2018’

YU Winthrop Hospital is proud to announce that among a field of nurses and nurse faculty at 27 hospitals and schools of nursing in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, Lila Hageman-Sheehan, BSN, RN, CEN, stood out to win Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council’s top nursing honor, the “Nurse of Excellence Award 2018.” Hageman-Sheehan, the Nurse Manager of the Emergency Department at NYU Winthrop, was chosen for her outstanding contributions to the nursing profession and to the field of health care including demonstrating leadership, serving as a role model to inspire others, illustrating significant achievements, and going far above and beyond normal duties. “Lila Hageman-Sheehan represents all that a nurse should be, passionate, caring and competent, and she is a leader who fosters safer communities,” said Valerie Terzano, PhD (c), RN, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer at NYU Winthrop Hospital. “Lila has long been a catalyst for change, working to improve the health care of Long Island residents, and we could not be prouder

of her at this moment, receiving this coveted award.” Among other current initiatives, Hageman-Sheehan is taking a lead role in the development of a SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner) program for NYU Winthrop, collaborating with

the Nassau County District Attorney’s office, Nassau County Police Department and others to improve upon and provide compassionate care to the victims of sexual assault. She participates in the Medical Reserve Corp of Nassau County, volunteering

to be on standby in the event of a mass casualty incident. Hageman-Sheehan’s compassion knows few bounds. Following the Las Vegas mass shootings in October 2017 that left 58 dead and 851 injured, she coordinated a collection to purchase lunches for the entire staff at two Las Vegas Hospital emergency departments. Those colleagues, overwhelmed by the support and compassion, sent letters of appreciation. Previously, in 2017, HagemanSheehan served as president of the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Nassau/Queens chapter, initiating offsite programs for ENA members, including “Water Watch,” a water safety program for children and parents, aimed at reducing the number of pediatric victims of water-related accidents. In receiving this Nurse of Excellence 2018 recognition, Hageman-Sheehan also was given a unique teapot, in a tradition that dates back decades. The teapot symbolizes that nurses are like teabags; they don’t know their own strength until they get into hot water. —NYU Winthrop Hospital

Five Ways To Fight Fatigue And Energize Your Life BY RAJ GUPTA

caffeine causes fatigue in some people. The stimulation wears off and more caffeine is needed to produce the feelings of energy and clear-headedness. Try cutting back on all things containing caffeine—coffee, tea, chocolate, soft drinks, etc. Also, water should be the preferred liquid. A person is recommended to drink half their weight in ounces per day, so you can be dehydrated and not even know it.

specialsections@antonmediagroup.com

Feeling tired is a common complaint people express. Sometimes the self-description morphs into “I feel tired all the time,” and experts say that’s when extreme tiredness becomes better known as fatigue. Fatigue, when someone lacks energy and feels exhausted mentally or physically, can negatively impact performance at work, family life, and social relationships. Often, it is not a medical issue, but one that can be reversed by a lifestyle change. People would be amazed at how much energy they’d have and how much better they’d feel if they treated themselves better. We all have busy lives, but there are simple ways to not let your schedule overwhelm you and make your health suffer as a consequence. Stress can lead to fatigue symptoms such as a craving for sweets and salty foods, difficulty sleeping and irritability. Try these five ways to fight fatigue and regain energy:

Dr. Raj Gupta

Run on the right fuel

A busy lifestyle can lead to fast food or carry-out. Therefore, preparation is important. Your energy and production are directly proportional to how you fuel your body. Always be thinking about what you will be eating later. Ideally, your diet should consist of eating approximately five times a day with a combination of complex carbohydrates—fruits and veggies— and lean protein.

Cut caffeine, add water

Research indicates too much

Stop burning the candle on both ends

Fatigue is often directly related to sleep deprivation. When you sleep is when most of your healing takes place and without enough sleep, your immune system breaks down. It’s recommended you get 6-8 hours of sleep per night.

Get regular exercise

No matter how busy you are, you need to make time for exercise on a regular basis, ideally for 20 to 30-minute sessions a minimum of four times per week. Regular exercise helps regulate your mood, makes you sleep more soundly and erases the little mistakes in our diet.

Body adjustments

The body can come more alive with a chiropractic alignment that provides proper functioning. Chiropractic adjustments to the spinal column relieve the pressure of a choked or pinched nerve caused by the rotated vertebra. No More Back Pain

“I’m batting .500 again. THANKS TO NSPC!” Joe’s road to recovery began

with a call to Neurological Surgery, P.C. (NSPC) and a same-day

appointment with a member of

NSPC’s team of world-renowned brain and spine surgeons. He

received a personalized treatment

plan that ensured the best possible outcome. Joe’s journey ended

with minimally invasive surgery that restored his normal life, including

turning double plays at shortstop.
