Go Red For Women’s Heart Health DR. STACEY ROSEN
Move More
specialsections@antonmediagroup.com
Heart disease is the number one killer of women. While 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for heart disease or stroke, according to the American Heart Association, it doesn’t mean we should live in fear. Rather, it’s a reminder that we all need to be advocates for our own heart health. Not sure how to minimize your chance of developing heart disease? A few simple lifestyle tweaks can make a big difference on your path toward a healthier you. From eating heart-healthy meals and snacks to regular exercise and minimizing stress, the strategies to protect your heart will also make you feel stronger and healthier. The following are a few simple strategies to help you proactively lower your risk of a cardiac event.

Hypertension, high cholesterol and elevated blood sugar are all easy to diagnose but can often get overlooked in women.
While going to the gym or participating in a regular exercise class is a great way to lower your risk of a heart attack or stroke, there are many ways to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. It can be as simple as taking a brisk walk, dancing or riding your bike. The key is to aim for some amount of physical activity 30 minutes per day.
Manage Stress
Heart disease is more common in women who experience chronic stress. Although it’s impossible to remove all sources of daily stress, there are ways to manage your stress, including limiting exposure to triggers that bring on stressful feelings. For example, if you’re feeling short on time, you may want to re-prioritize your schedule. Seeking the support of a trusted friend, family member or counselor
can provide comfort if you’re anxious about a relationship or situation. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of changing your perspective to better cope with daily stressful events. In addition, there are good ways to relieve your stress. Exercise and yoga are natural remedies for anxiety and stress that release powerful endorphins in the brain, which reduce pain and lift your mood. Making time to connect with people around you and spending time outside can also offer significant mood-boosting benefits.
Find The Right Doctor
Your primary healthcare provider should be someone you trust and can talk to without embarrassment or anxiety. When it comes to your heart, your doctor can be a primary source of information and support to ensure you’re doing all you

can to protect your health. Choose a doctor who you can relate to like a trusted confidant or friend. By developing a rapport with your doctor, you can gain the insights and modification you need to lower your risk of developing heart disease.
Know Your Numbers
Hypertension, high cholesterol and elevated blood sugar are all easy to diagnose but can often get overlooked in women who don’t obtain regular checkups. Learning your numbers is the first step in controlling heart disease before symptoms develop. Dr. Stacey Rosen is the vice president for women’s health at the Katz Institute for Women’s Health, part of Northwell Health. She is also an associate professor of cardiology at the Hofstra-Northwell School of Medicine.

Art Of Failing Forward
Recently, at one of the Girls Empowerment Workshops I was facilitating on the topic of leadership, I was sharing with the young girls that a leader must be willing to fail in order to ultimately succeed in some way. This idea really struck a chord with the girls, and they challenged me to no end to try and understand how failure could possibly be seen as a positive. Yes, there is definitely a stigma attached to failure for all of us. In this piece, I invite all of us to reframe our failures and see the gifts that come along with situations in which the ultimate outcome is not the one that we chose. Over the years I have learned that there was a blessing in each and every one of my failures. Some of the greatest insights of my life have come from learning to fail forward: the art of seeing each failure as an informative, important and necessary milestone on the way to success in all of its forms.
Failure As Feedback
When we can be open and willing to understanding and analyzing our failures, they can serve as a great
LIFE EVOLUTIONS Melody Pourmoradi source of information for us. They inform us on how to find creative solutions to reach our chosen path. They show us that as human beings we are equipped with the free will to take many different courses of action. Sometimes they simply remind us of just how badly we may want to achieve our goal, thereby further motivating us to get back in the game and see our purpose through. The nuggets of wisdom are endless when we are willing to receive the messages that come along with each downfall. How can you open yourself up to all of the communication that is available to you?
failing is proof that we are trying. Without making the effort to create what we most wish to show up in our lives, we need to at least take a step in the direction of our goals, even if that step turns out to be a temporary misstep. Consider all of the greats on our planet that have built empires after first failing and then failing forward. Examples, to name a few, include Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, Oprah Winfrey and Bill Gates. The more we fail then recover then improve, the better we are as people. In what ways are you willing to fail forward?

Failure As Redirection

redirects us on a path that is even more aligned with who we are than the one that we originally were striving for. If with each setback, we can create the space necessary to re-evaluate and re-define what our ultimate vision looks like, we just may find that we are being guided to something even greater and more rewarding than what we had envisioned. How are you willing to let your failures work for you, not against you? We can all learn more from a single failure then we ever could from a lifetime of success. The late Mary Tyler Moore said it best: “take chances, make mistakes. That’s how you grow. Pain nourishes your courage. You have to fail in order to practice being brave.” Wishing all of you the gift of failing forward on the path to living your dreams. FITNESS APPS
Exercise Made Easy
Fitness apps put personal trainers in the palm of your hand JeFit
BY CHRISTINA CLAUS
Personal trainers at the gym can get pricey, so the next best thing is a personal training app, which makes getting personalized fitness regiments a breeze and considerably more affordable. Some apps allow users to record both diet and exercise progress, monitoring their calories as well as the amount of weight they lifted at the gym that day. Apps let users set goals they can achieve and provide workouts necessary to achieve those goals. While some fitness apps may be free, they may also have in-app purchases for more advanced versions. Others may cost anywhere from a one-time fee of $4.99 to a monthly fee of $7.99. Here are some personal training apps to help you achieve your fitness goals without the personal trainer price.
The JeFit app allows users to create personalized workout routines that are tailored to meet their fitness needs as well as view and utilize workouts created by other users. You can record your training, track your rest time and complete your workout with one click. Later, the user can analyze their workout data and progress. The information can be accessed from both the user’s phone and computer, allowing them to check their progress toward their goals at any time. JeFit is available for both IOS and Android devices. The basic version is free, the pro version is a one-time payment of $4.99 and the elite version is $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year.
Lose It!
Lose It! is both a free website and app that is designed to help users count calories and log their exercise routines. The app keeps users connected to others using the Lose It! app to provide support for healthy weight loss. The app customizes a weight loss plan that fits the user’s life, helping them achieve personal goals in both exercise and eating habits. The
app also takes overall wellness into account by keeping track of sleeping habits and blood pressure. Users can share recipes and exercise routines with the Lose It! community. The app focuses on training its user with the help of others and is available on both IOS and Android devices.
FitStar
FitStar offers personal training from trainers Tony Gonzalez, a former NFL player, and Tara Stiles, founder of Strala Yoga. The app creates custom workouts based on personal fitness levels. The user does a few workouts with the app, gives feedback on which exercises were easy or tough and the app utilizes the information to create challenging routines specialized to the user. The app offers short workouts ranging from seven to 30 minutes, workouts with little equipment needed and workouts that can be done in tight spaces if the user is on the go. The app also has some features compatible with Fitbit. FitStar costs $7.99 a month or $39.99 a year and is available on both Android and IOS devices.
Touchfit: GSP
If you need a personal trainer with a strict attitude, Touchfit: GSP offers MMA World Champion Georges St-Pierre as your new personal trainer. After completing a test workout, the user rates the exercises they did from easiest to hardest. The answers the user gives will determine the workouts that will be given as the user moves forward. The app challenges its users with more than 500 video exercises. It measures the user’s progress and motivates them with the help of GSP’s voice. The app evolves with the user as they get stronger and stronger. Touchfit: GSP is $4.99 plus an optional fee of $9.99 for additional content.

Hepatitis C Medications: The Good, The Bad And The Unexpected The past three years have seen a revolution in the treatments of hepatitis C. No other infectious disease has gone from initial identification to cure in such a short period of time. Multiple oral regimens have been approved which treat all types of hepatitis C and all patients with the disease. It is always good to take a step back and look at the ramifications of such an advance.
THE SPECIALIST David Bernstein, MD
Most people state that they have no side effects or that they feel better on Hepatitis C, the leading cause of liver treatment than they did before starting transplantation and the most common the medications. The high cure rates chronic blood-borne infectious disease have led to a decrease in disease in the United States, is now curable in progression, a decrease in the developgreater than 95 percent of all patient ment of cirrhosis and liver cancer and groups. These cure rates apply to all an overall improvement in what the genotypes. These cure rates also apply liver looks like with many patients imto those patients who failed previous proving to a point that they no longer interferon and ribavirin therapies, who have cirrhosis. Curing hepatitis C has have compensated and decompenbeen associated with overall increased sated cirrhosis, who have advanced survival from non-liver diseases like kidney disease including dialysis and stroke and heart disease. those co-infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. The Good
that act differently on the virus and these different classes are used together. Each class of medications has its own safety profile. It is very important not to give a protease inhibitor to someone with decompensated liver disease as that can cause the liver to fail. It is also very important to review medications patients are taking to ensure there are no drug-drug interactions which can lead to either medication toxicity or decreased potency. The real problem with these therapies is access. While the therapies are costly, they have been shown to be cost effective and their price has come down considerably over the past three years. In late 2015, access to these therapies improved significantly and appropriate therapies were easily obtainable for deserving patients. In November 2016, something changed that we cannot explain but all of a sudden access to treatments has decreased and not only are patients not able to get these therapies but many doctors are being told that they cannot prescribe these therapies because they are not skilled enough. This is a real problem. We have curative therapies
that patients cannot get for any reason other than insurance companies do not want to pay for them.
The Unexpected
Curing hepatitis C seems to reinvigorate dormant viruses in the patient. For example, there have been more than 25 patients with inactive hepatitis B whose disease flared after being cured of hepatitis C. This is concerning and has led to the recommendation that all patients being considered for hepatitis C treatment be evaluated for hepatitis B and either monitored for disease flares on treatment with periodic blood tests or simply treated for hepatitis B when appropriate. This should not be a reason to withhold hepatitis C treatments. In addition, more than 10 patients have reported a flare of herpes infection after hepatitis C cure. These viral flares were certainly unexpected and we will need to follow our cured patients closely to observe for any other unexpected consequences of curing hepatitis C. David Bernstein, MD, is chief of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at Northwell Health.
