Make A Big Difference On Small Business Saturday BY ANTON MEDIA STAFF
F
specialsections@antonmediagroup.com
irst there was Black Friday, and then there was Cyber Monday. Now, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is supporting Small Business Saturday to help drive shoppers to America’s job creators. SBA is a proud supporter of Small Business Saturday as a day to support the local small companies that create jobs, boost the economy, and preserve neighborhoods around the country. According to SBA New York District Director Beth Goldberg, small businesses have generated more than 60 percent of net new jobs since 2000 and employ over half of all private sector employees. During this holiday season, SBA is encouraging every American to shop small and make a big impact in their local community on
this year’s Small Business Saturday, Nov. 26. “Small businesses are the foundation of our economy; half of America’s workers either own or work for a small business,” said Goldberg. “SBA supports small businesses and entrepreneurs on Long Island with financing, counseling and contracting assistance. Annually, Nassau County retailers generate $24 billion in sales, and Small Business Saturday is a way for small merchants to add to this total.” Many businesses across Long Island are participating in Small Business Saturday. “Small business Saturday is about local shop owners connecting with customers—whether it’s through creative holiday window displays, digital coupons, partnering with other local businesses for promotion or just good old-fashioned customer service that larger, big box stores cannot provide,” said SBA Long Island Branch Manager Peter Fehnel. Visit www.shopsmallnow.americanexpress. com to find local participating retailers. Visit www.sba.gov for more details.

t’s not the holiday season without food, family and some good wine. That’s why chef and restaurateur Alex Guarnaschelli teamed up with Woodbridge wines by Robert Mondavi to help prepare her delicious holiday meals.
“Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi has always been my go to for entertaining—it’s a quality option for sharing with friends and family,” said Guarnaschelli, who is a habitual entertainer. “I can combine my love of food and flavor with wines that are affordable and food friendly. It is a perfect match, which is why I keep coming back.” The chef loves Thanksgiving and cooks a full holiday meal every year with her staff at her restaurant, Butter. The tradition at the restaurant is a favorite, until Guarnaschelli goes home and starts from scratch for her family and friends. “I love to cook Thanksgiving, even more than I like to eat it, but I have a lot of help,” she said. “I have a lot of sous chefs—the older I get, the more help I have.” As for Guarnaschelli’s favorite Thanksgiving recipe, she loves the sides and has a special place in her heart for the classic green bean casserole. “I never had it growing up, so every year I have it, it feels like new,” she said. “Try making it from scratch and see what a fun project and great result it produces.” So take a cue from your favorite chef and pair your holiday menu with delicious and affordable wine that your guests will love. If you have any left over, Christmas is right around the corner.

Navigating Black Friday And Cyber Monday BY CHRISTINA CLAUS
S
cclaus@antonmediagroup.com
2.
ome people cringe when they hear the words “Black Friday” because it calls to mind crowds of people trampling over one another to get a bargain-priced, flat screen television. Over the years, it has gained a negative connotation, as people have been severely injured the day after giving thanks to the ones we love. While Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving that starts off the holiday shopping season with the biggest bargains, Cyber Monday is the online version of the race for bargain-priced electronics, clothing and more. Here are some tips for surviving Black Friday and Cyber Monday:
1.
Make lists The lists could include who you have to shop for, what those people want for the holidays, the best deals and where to get them. Knowing what you need allows you to keep your eyes on the prize instead of letting them stray to that doorbuster-priced slow cooker in Macy’s. When searching online, you might get distracted by Amazon’s Lightning deals, but the list will keep you on track. The list also allows you to hit only the stores and websites necessary, so you can be in and out quickly.
53rd
Have a schedule Some stores may only run specific sales until a certain time, so know when each store opens and what time the sales run until, so you can schedule your shopping accordingly. Schedules will also help you remember which store you need to go to next, so you don’t become side-tracked by in-your-face signs of stores you do not need to hit.
3.
Set a budget Black Friday and Cyber Monday can easily break the bank. When spying luggage priced at $49.99 instead of $200, $6.99 Ralph Lauren pillows, $29.99 comforters and $9.99 pajama pants while walking through Macy’s, you can be very tempted to buy them all. Set a budget for each person you’re shopping for and then an overall budget, so you stay on track with your purchases. Your bank account will thank you.
4.
Research Black Friday ads are now accessible to everyone. Most people get them mailed to their homes and, if not, the ads are always online. Compare prices between stores to make sure you are getting the best deal possible. Many stores will have similar products on sale at different prices. For Cyber Monday, you can easily compare all of the different website prices by just keeping a few different tabs open on your browser.

If you’re looking for that special item that never usually goes on sale and has dropped down to an incredible price, you need to make sure you’re one of the first people in line. Stores usually don’t carry many of their biggest promotional items, which are mainly electronics. Televisions, laptops and tablets generally do not come in large quantities, meaning that the first 10 or so in line might be the only lucky ones. Even online, stores may run out of their products quickly. On Cyber Monday, Amazon’s Lightning Deals usually tell the customer how many items are left in stock for each product.

Black Friday usually entails racing around the mall from store to store. Sometimes it even means running from mall to mall in search of a certain pair of headphones that your son or daughter cannot live without. Make sure you dress comfortably. Gym attire may be your best bet for getting through the crowds. Even on Cyber Monday, make sure to dress comfortably for all of the clicking around you will do on the web. Get in your pajamas and slippers, sit at the computer, and find your wife a pair of earrings she will love for half the price before she wakes up.

Be safe Black Friday has proven to be hazardous with fights breaking out and people being trampled. Be courteous to others. No television or blender is worth a fight. Always be mindful of your surroundings, because Black Friday is one of the biggest days for pickpocketing. Only take essential credit cards and cash with you. Never leave your purse unattended.

SENSUAL GIFT IDEAS
Signature Fragrance BY ELIZABETH JOHNSON

W
earing a scent defines you. Whether it’s fresh, citrusy, musky, floral or a combination, it is your signature. A fragrance is personal and unique to the wearer because body chemistry creates a unique signature that is expressed by the individual. Perfume has traditionally been one of the fail-safe gifts of the holiday season. Your scent identifies who you are. Hollywood has made movies on this topic like The Scent of A Woman starring Al Pacino, where he identifies a woman is single and surprises her by correctly identifying her perfume scent as Fleurs de Rocaille, thus giving him the opportunity to talk “politics.” The concept of fragrance is seductive as well. “I wear perfume to make me feel sexy,” said Gail Jenkins who wears CK One by Calvin Klein, a citrus aromatic fragrance for women and men launched in 1994 by Alberto Morillas and Harry Fremont. CK One top notes are pineapple, orange, papaya, bergamot, cardamom and lemon; middle notes include nutmeg, violet, jasmine and rose; base notes are sandalwood, amber, musk and cedar. “I love the way it makes me feel,” said Jenkins. The perfume industry revenues are significant. According to Mintel, the marketing research firm, the fragrance industry was estimated at roughly $30 billion in 2013. There is an

increasing demand for natural fragrances as well as rising popularity for celebrity and youth-oriented scents. Many celebrities sign on with perfume houses with the goal of associating their name with a signature scent such as Julia Roberts and Lancome with La Vie Est Belle, rated one of the best perfumes for women. Its key ingredient is iris, with jasmine and orange blossoms giving it a pleasant scent. Taylor Swift Women’s Wonderstruck has a rich and fresh scent and it has lasting power with hints of vanilla and raspberries. In addition, there is a growing sector for men’s cosmetics and toiletries. According to Trendsetter. com, Creed by Aventus has the strength and vision of Napoleon, featuring a bouquet of fruity notes including blackcurrant, bergamot, apple and pineapple, while birch and patchouli give the blend a smoky confidence irresistible to women. 1 Million by Paco Rabanne captures warm cinnamon, mandarin, grapefruit and minty citrus notes entwine with leather and patchouli. Tom Ford’s pricey Private Reserve classic is making its return at $300 a pop. The primary scent is thuya, combined with potent Atlas cedar and sandalwood, presents a wood combination—rich, dry, velvety and lightly spicy. Black pepper and juniper in the top notes ratchet up the sparkling energy, while warm, earthy patchouli and vetiver in the drydown radiate natural depth. Whatever you choose, the scent you wear identifies you.

easier and more delicious and I can make them organic, so that got me started on my obsession on learning to make the foods I loved organic and simple from scratch.” On publishing her book within her company, Rodale says it was very important to be respectful of her team and the entire process was nothing short of a team effort. “I know what is takes to make a good book, so I try and include those principles in whatever I do,” said Rodale of her book, which is published under Rodale Inc., a leading publisher of health and wellness. “It’s been a pleasure to work with the team here.” Having been an avid blogger for the past seven years, Rodale has become one with her garden, one of the many topics she posts about. Although she considers herself more of a landscape gardener, she does grow vegetables, frequents farmers markets and enjoys gathering and foraging for the freshest ingredients. “I want everybody to know that food is the

If you want the majority of your food from scratch, you’ll feel a lot better and be happier,” said Rodale, who splits her time between Pennsylvania and New York City, but always makes it a priority to cook a good meal. “Over half of the recipes in my book take half an hour, and I’ve made them dozens of times, so it’s ANTON MEDIA GROUP

not hard. The hardest part is doing the dishes,” she said. “Anyone can cook and these recipes are super simple. My kids love to help out and our time as a family is mostly spent in the kitchen.” As for her favorite recipe, Rodale serves up her roast chicken because it’s the symbol of her whole message of Scratch. “Instead of overly stuffing and brining and basting, just take a chicken, put it in a pan breast side up and roast it for about an hour and a half until the skin gets crispy. Then, take that out and make pan gravy on the stove top with flour and water. Some mashed potatoes from scratch and a little salad on the side and you’ve got a meal that will make everyone very happy,” she said. Rodale’s advice for non-chefs and first time cooks is simple: have fun, don’t be afraid and start with the food you love. “If you make a mistake, just laugh and start over because the hardest part is getting out of your own way, and Scratch is a cookbook that you can use over and over again,” she said. Up next for Rodale, she would like to examine how people relate to one another and how food can heal families and how families in turn, can heal each other through how they live their life. “That’s what’s missing in the world right now, how to get along with other people and how to love one another,” she said. “Food is often a symbol of that.”

most powerful healing ingredient there is, but how you raise that food is even more powerful. There are so many health and environmental problems that come back to the chemicals in food that we put into our bodies,” she said, adding that there is no sacrifice of good food in her book. “It’s all the food you love; there’s meat, cheese and butter.” Rodale’s recipes come from all over the place, but there’s a lot of recipes from both sides of the family in her book. “I have a good foundation of Italian recipes,” said Rodale, who also travels frequently and tries to recreate dishes she comes across. “It’s become a fun game and hobby of sorts for me and my kids. But the traditional recipes are in there, like my grandmother’s molasses cake that I found written on a card in the back of a closet.” Always aware of being healthy and how the world around her views nutrition, Rodale stressed that Scratch is not a diet book, and how food trends come and go. “What I’ve learned is that you should just eat food that’s as close

epartment of Consumer Affairs (DCA) Commissioner Lorelei Salas issued the following holiday shopping tips to protect consumers’ identity and money during the holiday season. This annual effort is set to kick off the holiday shopping season and make consumers aware of their rights—including new gift card protections— help them spend wisely, and protect them from scams. “Americans are expected to spend an average of $750 on everything from gifts to food to decorations this holiday season, but, unfortunately, with that spending comes the theft of
billions of dollars,” said Salas. “As the holiday shopping season begins, we encourage everyone to follow these tips to protect themselves and ensure the holiday season is a time of joy and not frustration, or lost identity or money.”
Consumer Shopping Tips for the Holiday Season
• Know your consumer rights. • Create a budget and make a list. Don’t let holiday spending put you in debt. • Be a smart shopper. • Gift cards are one of the most popular gifts—know the latest rules. The value of a gift card must stay valid for at least five years from when the card was purchased or money was last loaded onto it. In New York, starting Dec. 25, all fees must be listed and no inactivity or service fees can be charged if the card has been used within the past 25 months (12 months
before Dec. 25). If you’re buying an “experience” card (like a spa treatment, flight or hotel stay), buy one with a specific dollar value so you can benefit from consumer protections. • Be on alert for holiday scams. It’s a busy time of year, and, unfortunately, some scammers try to take advantage of people and their generosity. Shop at stores you know, research charities before you donate, protect your personal information, and be wary of suspicious calls and emails, especially if they offer free things or deals that are too good to be true. • Protect yourself when shopping online. Only shop on secure websites—use familiar websites or research and read reviews of new ones, and check that the website starts with https (not just http) or has a padlock icon. Avoid typing your personal information when using unsecured Wi-Fi. Also don’t click on shopping links from unsolicited emails or social Cont’d from page 4B

media sites—type the address directly into your browser. • Shop local and don’t buy counterfeit or “pirated” goods. • Get a delivery date. Secure a delivery date in writing before you leave a store. If retailers don’t specify a “ship by” date for your online purchase, they must ship within 30 days. • Check for recalls. To check if a gift or toy has been recalled, visit the Consumer Product Safety Commission website (www.cpsc.gov). • File a complaint if you’ve had a problem the business won’t resolve. File a complaint with DCA at nyc.gov/dca.
