What to Buy in November BY REBA PUTORTI

EDITORIAL@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

With the holiday shopping season rapidly approaching, you’d be hard pressed to find a Long Islander who isn’t looking for a bargain. But, what’s best to buy? Surprisingly, the month of November is the right time to purchase certain items that may not be on your radar. Loading up your shopping cart with discounted bags of Halloween candy, a new barbecue grill or even a wedding dress will give you the biggest bang for your buck. Find out what else you can find on sale in stores this November. Plus, get a sneak peek at when some of your favorite retailers will kick off their discounted holiday buying bonanzas—aka Black Friday shopping fests.

Candy

If you’re giving into your sweet tooth, now is the time to stock up on candy. Halloween may be over, but that doesn’t mean you still can’t buy bags of candy.

Wedding Dress

With all the commotion of the holiday season, many brides-to-be don’t want to take a break to find their gowns. If you do have some extra time

and an idea of the style you like, start looking. You might be surprised with the deals you find.

Gas Grill

The unfortunate end of outdoor barbecue season provides a fortunate head start on your new grill for next year. For those who despise the cold, the prospect of hamburgers and hot dogs sizzling on a new grill come spring will get you through the winter.

Lawn Mower

Hopefully, you’ve locked up your lawn mower for the year, but if it won’t make it through next year, buy a new one now. Even if you have a gardener, it’s a useful piece of equipment to own.

Tools

While you’re fighting the winter weather by staying indoors, invest in some tools to do repairs and improvement around the house.

Cookware/Appliances

The holidays are here, whether you realize it or not. Your kitchen will see the most action and that requires good appliances. If you need new pots and pans, get them before you end up having to spend Thanksgiving at Denny’s.

U.S. Marines Kick Off Toys For Tots Campaign BY CHRISTY HINKO

CHINKO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

Hundreds of civic, business, community and elected officials gathered at the barn at Old Bethpage Village Restoration to support the annual kick-off of the Long Island Toys for Tots Drive on Oct. 9. The toy drive is the nation’s largest gift program for children during the holidays. Retired Marine Corps Major Chuck Kilbride, of Levittown, gave special recognition to the many people who make Toys For Tots possible locally, including U.S. Postal Service workers, marines, legislators, and the police and fire departments, who work tirelessly to collect toys each year. The public campaign was announced at Roosevelt Field Mall on Nov. 17. Kilbride continues to lead the U.S. Marines in their tireless efforts of bringing joy to little girls and boys with toys for the holidays, with the campaign throughout Nassau County. “[Kilbride] has been the backbone of this incredible operation for more

Toys For Tots collection boxes will be available at every county office building, as well as throughout Roosevelt Field Mall, many through Friday, Dec. 18. Since the 1990s, Anton Media Group has been a major sponsor for the Toys For Tots charity campaign. Once again, Anton’s main office will serve as an official drop-off location for Toys For Tots. Those

who would like to make a donation of a new, unwrapped toy for a child who may otherwise go without the magic of the season are invited to do so at Anton’s office, 132 E. 2nd St. in Mineola, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Friday, Dec. 18. Toys from communities across Nassau and Suffolk counties are collected by individuals and businesses, then distributed by the members of the U.S. Marine Corps locally to underprivileged children. Saving And Budgeting For The Holidays

SEAson’s Greetings GIVE THE GIFT OF AQUATIC ADVENTURE -

Gift Cards!

BY ROBERT SUAREZ

SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

Let’s face it. Annual holiday expenses are inevitable and usually add up to be significantly more than we anticipate, making the season one of the most stressful times of year. So why do we make purchases each holiday season that don’t make financial sense and then have to deal with the consequences come the new year? Below are holiday savings and budgeting tips to help you plan a no-regret holiday. Purchasing gifts and planning holiday gatherings for friends and loved ones should be enjoyed, without putting you in debt for months to come.

Use them for Admission, Membership, Penguin Encounter, Shark Dive, or for anything at the Aquarium!

GIFT

Develop a Gift Budget Write down a list of everyone you plan to purchase a gift for and decide how much you would like to spend on each person. Be sure to include the cost for postage and shipping for those people who don’t live nearby, as postage and shipping can add up.

CAR

D

Develop a Home Entertainment Budget Make a list of all of the holiday parties and gatherings you plan to host in your home throughout the entire holiday season and decide on the amount you want to spend for each, and then calculate the grand total. As guests seem to stop by during the holidays to drop off gifts, share home-baked cookies, or come by for a drink, be sure to include a budget for the occasional “holiday drop by” as well so that you can stock up on and budget for your beverages and serving needs. Know How Much to Spend It’s recommended not to spend more than 1.5 percent of your household annual income on entertainment and holiday gifts each year.

431 East Main Street, Riverhead, NY 11901 | 631.208.9200, ext. 426 LongIslandAquarium.com

Track Your Spending Unless you keep track of your purchases as you make them, all of your budgeting will have been a waste of time. So as you make your purchases, jot down the actual costs and re-adjust other line items as needed.

Set Aside Money Reach out to your financial institution to see if they offer “special purpose accounts.” They are designed to help you dedicate funds to specific

Rob Suarez savings goals such as vacations and holiday spending. Remember, anything you put on credit cards that seem convenient at the time, will actually cost you more in the long term, so saving money prior to spending is ideal. You can even set up an automatic deposit to your special purpose account to help make saving easier. Compare Prices Online Besides allowing you to shop from the comfort of your own home, researching gifts online lets you easily determine which retailers are offering the best prices. While you’re online, you can also check for coupon codes simply by typing the name of the store and “coupon” into the search engine. Opportunities for free shipping can also be found online. Don’t Forget Those Partially or Unused Gift Cards Many of us have old or partially used gift cards that are either near expiration or not fully used up. Unless they are used before their expiration dates, they are as good as money in the garbage! So go through your wallets and dresser drawers, find your unused and old gift cards and apply those unused dollars to your holiday shopping needs. This is perfect for smaller gifts for babysitters, teachers, and service providers. Relax and enjoy the season. It’s important to realize the true meaning of the holiday season which is to spend stress-free time with those you care about. If you plan ahead and stick to your budget, you’ll be able to enjoy the season and the months following, on the right financial foot.
