BOOKS
Martha Stewart Says: ‘Eat Your Vegetables’ Domestic Diva touts latest book in Farmingdale BY JOSEPH CATRONE jcatrone@antonmediagroup.com
D
ozens from around Long Island showed up to Stew Leonard’s in Farmingdale recently for a chance to meet Martha Stewart. The “Domestic Diva” took part in a book signing to promote Vegetables, a book that is devoted to Stewart’s favorite vegetarian recipes. It was inspired by Stewart’s desire to demonstrate that not all meals need to rely heavily on meat. “Many people are realizing that we all eat too much meat,” Stewart said. “It’s not that healthy. So why not spend more time learning and prepping and cooking vegetables to increase our plant-based diets? I think it’s a very important thing for the future.” The book, in addition to containing 150 recipes, offers shoppers some guidance for selecting and storing vegetables, as well
as scientific facts as to what benefits can be found in certain vegetables. Stewart made clear her preference for organic vegetables but was also quick to point out that genetically modified doesn’t automatically mean unhealthy. “Not all genetically modified vegetables are bad,” she said. “It’s very hard to determine what’s what. It doesn’t always take from the nutrition of
the vegetable. But I always look for organically grown if I can find it. I’m a big gardener and I grow a lot of things myself. I know what things should look like, so I shop accordingly.” Stewart is optimistic that growing vegetables in greenhouses is on the rise, which she says can help in terms of local availability. “You can’t totally buy
#purejoy
locally in the northeast, because things aren’t growing unless they’re grown in greenhouses,” she said. “And I think the greenhouse movement, like in Brooklyn on the rooftops, is phenomenally successful and will be even more successful. Turning big, defunct shopping centers into farms under glass is also very good because I think shopping local is great.” Besides advocating for buying locally when possible, Stewart shared her take on what an ideal grocery store should offer, citing not only good value, but also the opportunity to learn further about food. In particular, she offered praise for the store that hosted her book signing. “I met Stew Leonard Sr. when he first started Stew
Leonard’s in [Norwalk] Connecticut,” Stewart said. “That was many years ago and I’ve been a fan ever since. It’s a really fun store. You learn a lot here. You get very good value. Stew Leonard Jr. works very hard to get the best available produce, fish and wine, too.” For Stewart, family tradition and a genuine love of vegetables keeps the topic fresh and resulted in her book. “I love vegetables,” she said. “My father grew a tremendous garden in Nutley, NJ. We ate all his vegetables for as long as the season produced them. Anything tomatoes, anything potatoes, sautéed spinach, I love. My mother’s mashed potatoes are the best you’ve ever tasted.”

FOOD
National Cookie Day Cookie Swap BY CHRISTINA CLAUS cclaus@antonmediagroup.com
T
hink about it: A day filled with the aroma of chocolate chip cookies baking in the oven, cookie dough to eat off the spoon and freshly baked gooey cookies to shove into your mouth. What could be better than that? Observe Sunday, Dec. 4, National Cookie Day, as an excuse to indulge in three or 15 of your favorite cookies. Instead of simply baking treats for the family to enjoy, you can host a cookie swap party. This time of the year is perfect to get together with friends and swap cookie recipes for the upcoming holidays. Invite a group of friends over and have each friend bake a different cookie. At the party, friends can sample the different recipes, trade cookies and package an assortment to bring home to their families.
Six tips on hosting a cookie swap in honor of National Cookie Day: 1. Send out invites. You can either go old school and mail out invitations or simply make a Facebook event or group chat. Let your friends know a week or two in advance, so they can plan their baking time around their schedule. 2. Choose your cookies. Coordinate ahead of time so your friends aren’t making the same cookies. Avoid cookies that need to be refrigerated at all times or cookies that can’t sit out for a few hours. 3. Provide savory snacks and refreshments. Your party-goers might want something savory after chowing down on all of that sugar. Be sure to provide some hors d’oeuvres for your guests along with tea, coffee, water or punch. 4. Provide packaging. Buy some inexpensive bakery boxes that can be found at the dollar store or most craft stores for guests to package their
For The
Holidays
cookies in when the party is over. You can buy some festive ribbon as well. 5. Decorate. Set up platters for your friends to place their cookies on. Provide note cards with the name of the cookie and who made them for easy identification. Decorate your house in a seasonal manner to create a fun atmosphere. You can even set up a cookie decorating station for kids if you plan to have them at the party. 6. Swap. Exchange your cookies and take home your new delicious treats for your family to enjoy. You can even create a word document that lists the recipe for each cookie at the party and print one out for each of your guests. Your guests can make any day National Cookie Day with their new list of recipes.

assau County’s outdoor ice rinks at Christopher Morley Park and Grant Park are now open for the winter season. The county provides three separate ice-skating rinks for residents to enjoy, with outdoor rinks at Christopher Morley and Grant parks open from late November through March, and the indoor rink at Cantiague Park open yearround. All rinks provide public skating sessions, lessons, ice hockey sessions and opportunities to rent the ice for birthday parties and other events. All three facilities offer skate rentals.

FESTIVAL
Port Jefferson’s Annual Charles Dickens Festival
T
he Village of Port Jefferson and the Greater Port Jefferson-Northern Brookhaven Arts Council will host the 21st Annual Charles Dickens Festival on Dec. 3 and Dec. 4 throughout the village. Port Jefferson will magically transform into the Dickensian era with streets filled with roaming characters such as Father Christmas, Dickens Mayor, Scrooge, the Town Crier and the beloved chimney sweeps. Begin your Dickens adventure with a parade on East Main Street, Saturday morning at 11 a.m. The events are open to the public and most attractions are free of charge, so everyone—from the very young to the young at heart can join in the
whimsically decorated rooms. Twinkling white lights, elaborate confection displays, and the giant nutcrackers are just a few of the signature elements that bring the Magic of Christmas to life. The
workshop continues weekends through Dec. 10. Another popular attraction is the impressive Festival of Trees located on the second floor of the Port Jefferson Village Center. More than a dozen elaborately
decorated, themed holiday trees are on display throughout the month. As in past years, East Main Street will become Dickens Alley and Fezziwig’s Ball, featuring live music on traditional
fun. The festivities will feature many returning favorites; ice-skating at the Village Center, a cappella performance by choirs and harmony groups, Nutcracker performances, magic shows, and many musical performances by area musicians. In addition, this year’s festival will feature Theater Three’s 33rd Annual production of A Christmas Carol. The return of a Dickens Festival favorite is Santa’s Workshop. Join Santa and his elves and wind through three

Christmas back then was not as grand an event as it is now and the Village is decorated in keeping with the times with simple garlands and wreaths. There is but one tree in the village, tucked away in Layton House. “People weren’t as concerned with decorating,” said Lindsey McKeever, museum associate in charge of event coordinating and programming, “and the décor was minimal.” Old Bethpage Village Restoration is a recreated museum village with costumed actors giving a glimpse of life on Long Island in the 19th century and answering questions from the visitors. The village, located on the Nassau-Suffolk border, was established in 1963, beginning with one original building on the property, the Powell Farmhouse. Thomas Powell established himself on Long Island in 1695 with the purchase of 10,000 acres from the Marsapeque,
Matinecoc, and Sacatogue peoples who occupied the land. He named this tract of land, measuring 3.5 miles east to west and five miles north to south, Bethphage after the biblical Bethphage as both were situated between towns called Jericho and Jerusalem. Jerusalem ultimately became Wantagh and Island Trees and eventually the second “h” was dropped from Bethpage. The rest of the 58 buildings of the Restoration Village were brought to the site from other locations and arranged to simulate a typical mid19th century farming community. During the Candlelight Evenings, as visitors walk through the village they will come across activities such as story-telling of Christmases past and Civil War Era Christmas songs. There’s lots of music in many of the houses as well as a holiday brass quartet. The contradancing takes place in the fairgrounds exhibition NOVEMBER 30 - DECEMBER 6, 2016

Vintage meets Modern We invite you to visit our shops and browse our hall on Saturday and Sunday. Contradancing is a folk dance made up of long lines of couples facing each other. A caller, who teaches the sequence of figures before the dance begins, calls out the steps as couples progress up and down these lines. “Everyone smiles during the dancing,” said McKeever. “They teach you and the volunteers ask
people to dance with them.” You might want to bring a flashlight or oil lamp to show you the way through the candlelight village. But you should do fine if you just follow the music. Old Bethpage Village Restoration is located at 1303 Round Swamp Rd. in Old Bethpage. Visit www. obvrnassau.com or call 516-5728400 for more details.
