Tour For A Sweet Tooth BY CHRISTINA CLAUS cclaus@antonmediagroup.com

T

he holiday season is all about indulgence, and what better way to indulge than taking a food tour around Union Square’s holiday market? Co-owners of Sugartooth Tours Sarah Rolleston Morgan and Allyson Tolbert created the Sugartooth Holiday Market Dessert Tour for those with a sweet tooth and the desire to explore different holiday treats ranging from Glühwein to melt-in-yourmouth truffles.

over the Union Square Holiday Market, causing the two women to modify their holiday dessert tour. The market began to have more clothing and gift vendors, so some of the original vendors have disappeared from the tour. But Morgan and Tolbert expanded their tour, so guests can now enjoy holiday treats from 34th Street down to 14th Street. “We’ve moved it to start at 34th Street and Herald Square, which, to me, is the epitome of the holidays,” said Tolbert. “For me, when Santa comes through there, it’s Christmastime. So we’ll start up there and our guests will enjoy hot chocolate, and then we’ll walk down and hit one of the vendors that we feature, Dough, and then we’ll end up [at the market]. It’s still under two miles, which is completely awesome.” Once at Union Square, guests will experience a European-style Christmas market with tasty treats from Germany, France and Belgium, as well as locally made goodies from around the area. “One of the places we feature CONT’D ON PAGE 8B

The two dessert enthusiasts are both actors who met in a class about how to get and keep an agent; however, instead of acquiring an agent, the two women decided to start a business. “We loved walking food tours,” said Tolbert, as she explained why the two formed the first walking dessert tour in New York City. “We wanted to do one thing and we wanted to be good at it, we wanted to be great at it.” The Holiday Market Dessert Tour was the second tour that the women came up with, taking crowds of three to 16 guests around the festive Union Square Holiday Market. For $50, guests enjoy one to two hours of holiday merriment as they walk through the wooden red-and-white clad shops. Tour-takers get to experience six tastings from a variety of vendors around the market. “The Holiday Market is always featured, because Sarah and I thought it was just a great thing about New York,” said Tolbert. “I think it’s one of our favorite things about this city.” Urbanspace recently took

CHARITY

Make Sure Every Dollar You Give To Charity Counts BY NATHANIEL SILLIN specialsections@antonmediagroup.com

D

eciding to make a charitable contribution can arise from a desire to help others, a passionate commitment to a cause or the aim to give back to a group that once helped you or a loved one. Choosing which organizations you want to support can be difficult. There are over a million public charities in the United States according to the National Center for Charitable Statistics, and every dollar you give to Charity A is a dollar you might not be able to match for Charity B. Whether it’s a friend’s charity run or supporting an animal rescue, often the decision to give comes down to a mix of internal and external factors. You have to determine which causes are most important to you, and with outside help you can compare how effective various charities are at using their funding. Many non-profits do incredible work, but it’s always smart to verify their claims. You can start your due

diligence by double checking an organization’s tax-exempt status using the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) Exempt Organizations Select Check Tool. Once you verify its non-profit status, you want to make sure it’s well run and makes a significant impact. There are several non-profits that evaluate and rate charities. You can find their guidance online and use it to compare charities and inform your gifting.

Sometimes a specific event rather than a general cause can spur you into action. When this happens, if you want to be sure that your money goes to support that particular cause. you might want to narrow your search to charities that let you specify how your donation will be used. Otherwise, your money might not directly support those affected by the crisis. Donating to a nonprofit with effective programs and processes is the way to go if you’re trying to help as many people as possible, but you can also make contributions to individuals or families through a crowd-funding website. There’s something special about knowing exactly who and how you’re helping, and they’ll appreciate the aid from a stranger. Similarly, you can help entrepreneurs by making a microfinance loan through a nonprofit. You can re-lend the money you’re paid back to continue supporting small businesses. If you’re looking for ways to increase your contribution, ask your employer if it has a matching program. Some companies will double, or even triple, your gift to select nonprofits. If your company doesn’t offer such a program, you could speak to your human resources department or boss about establishing one. Third parties also fund matching campaigns for charities. You can ask a charity if there’s a campaign running and make sure your donation qualifies. Unless there’s a pressing

reason to make a donation today, you may want to put your money aside and wait until a matching campaign starts. You might be able to increase your financial impact without outside help if you can claim a tax deduction for your donation. Calculate your tax savings each year and put the money back into your charity fund. Donation-related deductions can sometimes be confusing, and you may want to check with a tax professional or look online for tips from the IRS. Your charitable gift could be the start of a legacy of giving among your family. By making donations a regular event during your children’s formative years, you’re establishing charitable giving as a family value that they can take into their adult lives. To engage children, make a donation to support a child’s favorite cause and show them how the money makes a difference. For example, you could follow up a donation to a nonprofit animal rescue with a visit to the shelter to see how the money helps the staff take care of the animals. Bottom line: Making a donation is one way to support a cause you believe in and ensure your gift has a meaningful impact. You can do this by having money available when it’s needed, donating to worthwhile charities, looking for ways to increase your financial impact, and passing on a legacy of giving. Pop Into The Holiday With Cake Pops

M

y favorite way to entertain during the holidays is to host a cocktail party—this gives me the opportunity to invite as many people as I want and is a lot less stressful than other types of parties, such as a sit-down dinner. I do the same thing every year—appetizers, desserts, and cocktails. I mean, seriously? Isn’t that what we want to consume at a party anyway? For both the appetizers and desserts, I like little bites, things people can pick up and eat without having to use utensils. Little bites of deliciousness. This year I am adding these adorable cheesecake pops to my cocktail party menu. They can be made ahead, are easy to eat, and adorable. And there is no baking involved.

Rules For Regifting BY CHRISTY HINKO chinko@antonmediagruop.com

Y

es, it is being said. There are rules for regifting and whether you admit it or not, it is extremely resourceful to do so—but there are tactful ways to do it and not so tactful ways, too. Regifting, giving a gift that you received to another person, has been happening for centuries, but there are some simple etiquette rules that should be followed.

Not To Regift

The Chocolate Duck

Use common sense. Never regive a Christmas candle in the middle of the summer. Do not give anything monogrammed to your neighbor, unless by odd chance they have the same initials as you do. Do not regift handmade items or free promotional items like the tote bag from the perfume counter. Make sure your giftee is not related to the person who originally gave the gift to you. Do not discuss that your gift is recycled. It might be true, but you should not tell someone it is a regift. Do not feel bad about regifting. There is a slight workaround for this, though. If you are regifting something seriously expensive, you might want to tell the giftee so they do not feel obligated to gift you back with something equally expensive.

To Regift

The best gifts for re-gifting are gifts that you really believe are best suited for a specific person. There are times when the person to whom you are re-gifting will get enjoyment out of something that doesn’t suit your taste. Don’t regift just to get rid of the gift. Just because you don’t want the gift doesn’t mean the person you are giving it to does either. Personalize the new and unopened regift. Rewrap it, and definitely change the gift card that it originally came with.

An idea mentioned on Regiftable.com suggests hosting a sort of White Elephant Party, when people gather together for the

purpose of exchanging essentially impractical items. This is a great way to regift without guilt. Just be sure that the original gift giver will not be in attendance. Here’s how it goes: Each guest brings one wrapped regift. All guests draw a number. The regifter with the lowest number chooses a wrapped regift and opens it for everyone to see. The person with the next lowest number can either take the opened regift or select a “new” wrapped regift. If they choose a “new” regift, they must open it for all to see. Each subsequent person is allowed to either unwrap a “new” regift or take any of the regifts already opened. If a regift is taken from someone, that person gets to immediately choose another “new” gift to open or they can get revenge by stealing someone else’s gift. Finally, when all the gifts have been opened, the person with the lowest number gets to trade with anyone or keep the regularly rejected regift they ended up with. On the off chance that you don’t love what you end up with, donate it to charity. So, maybe it is the gift that keeps on giving, or it’s something you have a duplicate of—either way, make sure to thank the person who gave it to you with sincerity. If you cannot bring yourself to regift, some choose to donate their unwanted gifts to charity or sell them in an online auction. Gift thoughtfully. DECEMBER 7 - 13, 2016

Give Family And Friends Gifts From The Arbor Day Foundation

C

elebrate this year’s holiday season with friends and loved ones while supporting conservation and tree planting with the help of the Arbor Day Foundation.

• Returning for the seventh season in a row, GiveA-Tree cards from the Arbor Day Foundation offer a unique, holiday giving opportunity with conservation benefits that will endure for generations. And again this year, Give-A-Tree cards can be purchased individually and with customized text. Cards can be purchased for $5.95. • Purchasing the Arbor Day Foundation’s coffee helps preserve rainforests in Central and South America. The foundation’s coffee, a part of the Rain Forest Rescue

program, is shade-grown under the canopy of Latin American rainforests. Unlike sun-grown coffee plantations, this traditional shade-grown method gives the coffee a rich and delicious flavor. Each bag helps preserve two feet of rainforest. Cost per bag is $13.49, including shipping. • The Foundation’s Trees in Celebration program allows the giver to honor loved ones while supporting crucial conservation efforts. For each dollar donated, one tree is planted in a high-need forest, and recipients are given a certificate showing

them where the trees were planted. • Give the gift of membership with the Arbor Day Foundation and recipients will be sent 10 free trees, which will be shipped at the right time of year for planting. Membership levels vary and begin with a $10 contribution. “The holidays are a time for thinking about others, and as you do, take a moment to think about what you can do to protect the beauty and splendor of the earth,” said Matt Harris, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “We encourage everyone to give gifts that will have a lasting impact for generations to come.” Visit www.arborday.org to purchase holiday gifts that give back to the planet.

Some foodies even like to create new dishes for themselves as they attempt to master the art of cooking. If you want to get your favorite food lover a gift that will touch their heart, you will have to go through their stomach first. Here are the top five gifts to buy for the foodie in your life:

Food Fun Accessories

On Etsy.com, you can buy jewelry such as rings, earrings and necklaces with tacos, cupcakes or bagels on them. Food T-shirts or pajamas are always a food lover’s dream and can be found at Amazon.com.

Food Subscription Box

Subscription boxes are becoming increasingly popular because people love to open up a present every month to find out what new product is inside. Food subscription boxes are perfect for the daring foodie in your life who loves to try new snacks. There are numerous companies that offer exotic foods every month, such as a Try the World box in which your favorite foodie will receive seven to eight products

DIY Kits

While foodies love to eat out for most of their meals, some like to take a crack at making their own creations in the kitchen. You could make this kit from home or buy it online. You can create a cupcake baking box filled with cupcake liners, some measuring spoons or cups, icing bags and tips, a box of cupcake mix and a tub of icing. Or you can head to Global Grub at www.globalgrub.com and pick out a sushi roll kit complete with sushi rice and a rolling mat or a ravioli kit which includes the ingredients to make fresh ravioli dough and a ravioli stamp.

Jacqueline Whitmore, an internationally-recognized etiquette expert, author and founder of The Protocol School of Palm Beach, offers these tips: • Give what you can. Tips are appreciated but not mandatory. If your budget is limited, opt for a small gift and a thank you note. If you’re unsure of who can receive tips, call the company and ask if there are specific guidelines. Someone in management will also be able to tell you if a cash tip or gift is more appropriate and what amount is customary. • Make a plan. Before you make a run to the bank, make a list of those people who have assisted you regularly. Once you know whom you’d like to thank, make a realistic budget of what you can afford to give. Because we live near New York City, the expected tipping range is slightly higher. Increase the tip for individuals with whom you have a friendship or those who go above and beyond the call of duty. • Hand-deliver your tip. When possible, deliver your gift in person accompanied by a handwritten card. Freshly printed, crisp bills are ideal. Gifts should be delivered on or before Dec. 25, but may be given whenever you have contact with the person during the holiday season.

And as for how much to give: • Manicurist: $25 to $50 or a gift • Hair stylist: $50 to $100 or a gift • Barber: up to the cost of one haircut or a gift • Personal trainer: up to the cost of one session or a gift • Housekeeper: up to the cost of one visit • Au pair or live-in nanny: one or two week’s pay and a gift from your children • Teacher: A gift card or gift certificate for up to $25, or pitch in with some of the other parents and buy a more expensive gift certificate • Day care provider: $20 to $70 each, plus a small gift from your child • Babysitter: an evening’s pay, plus a gift from your child • Massage therapist: up to the cost of one session or a gift • Superintendent: $20 to $80 or a gift, depending on how helpful your super has been to you • Doorman: $15 to $100 • Mail carrier: small gift or gift card up to $20 • Newspaper carrier: $10 to $30 • Sanitation worker: $10 to $30 each for private service; check your local municipality for regulations, as some areas may not allow tipping • Yard or Garden Worker: $20 to $50 or a gift card • Handyman: $15 to $50 or a gift card • Pool cleaners: up to the cost of one cleaning or gift card • Dog walker: up to one week’s pay or a gift • Pet groomer: up to the cost of one session or a gift DECEMBER 7 - 13, 2016

FOOD

Eggnog: Raw, Cooked Or Canned? BY CHRISTY HINKO chinko@antonmediagroup.com

W

hether you prefer a classic eggnog, or something lighter, but still as tasty, here are a couple of eggnog variations for you to serve at your next holiday event.

Traditional Eggnog

12 eggs, separated 1½ cups sugar 2 cups bourbon ¾ cup brandy 2 tsp ground nutmeg 6 cups milk 2 cups heavy cream In a large bowl and using a mixer, beat the egg yolks together with the sugar for approx 10 minutes. Mixture should be firm. Slowly, add in the bourbon and brandy—just a little at a time. Allow mixture to cool in the fridge (for up to 6 hours). Approximately 30 minutes before your guests arrive, stir the milk into the chilled yolk mixture. Stir in 1 and a half teaspoons

ground nutmeg. In a separate bowl, beat the cream with a mixer on high speed until the cream forms stiff peaks. In yet another bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form. Gently fold the egg white mixture into the egg yolk mixture. Gently fold the cream into the egg mixture. Ladle into cups. Garnish with remaining nutmeg. Serves 8.

Low Fat Eggnog

For those of us who really don’t need any extra naughty bits over the festive season, this low-fat eggnog is perfect. 6 cups skim milk 1 cup “Egg Beaters” (or similar)

2 tsp vanilla extract 2 tsp rum extract sweetener or sugar, to taste 2 pinches nutmeg, ground 2 pinches cinnamon, ground In a medium saucepan, heat the milk, Egg Beaters and sweetener or sugar. Stir continuously. Heat and stir until the mixture thickens slightly—enough that it can coat the back of a spoon. Stir in the vanilla essence, rum extract, one pinch of nutmeg and one pinch of cinnamon. Remove from heat. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until the eggnog has cooled (at least three hours). Just prior to serving, ladle your yummy low-fat eggnog into glasses, and

garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg and cinnamon. Serves 6.

Easy Eggnog

A recipe that is easy to make. You’ll have this quick eggnog ready to go in no time. 6 eggs 3 cups milk 8 Tbsp sugar 3 tsp vanilla extract ½ tsp nutmeg, ground In a large bowl, beat the eggs using an electric beater. By turns, add milk and sugar. Beat until mixture thickens slightly. Add in the vanilla extract and ground nutmeg. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate (at least 3 hours). Serves 8.

Plan early. If you’re in charge of scheduling the office party, start planning as soon as possible. Send invitations or let co-workers know the date, time and location at least one month in advance so they can plan accordingly. Also be sure to let them know if the invitation includes spouses, significant others and family members. Spouses. Often, spouses and significant others are invited to holiday parties, too. Make sure they feel included and comfortable. Let them know what to wear, and give them a heads-up on bosses and colleagues who are likely to be there. At the party, don’t ditch them. You’re going to have to talk to someone. If the thought of party small talk makes you sweat, don’t panic. People who blather on are usually the ones who embarrass themselves—not the quiet type. Simply think before you speak. Have a list of potential topics in mind that will help you get a conversation going—or consult a popular magazine or two for ideas. Try to avoid yes or no questions. “What are your plans for the holidays?” will generate a more detailed response

than “Are you traveling for the holidays?” And remember, the wallflower near the buffet is probably looking for a conversation just as much as you are. Was photocopying your butt ever a good idea? People who drink too much at office parties are taking the risk of seriously harming their professional careers. The chemistry you had and acted on with Jennifer at the holiday office party may seem less than romantic in the clear, sober office environment. And management may think twice about trusting you with their biggest client after your drunken karaoke rendition of “Be My Baby.” Be thankful. Be sure to thank the host of your holiday office party, as well as any of the people who worked to plan the event. No festive occasion comes off without hard work, and it’s a task that often gets overlooked. A verbal thank you is sufficient, an e-mail acceptable, but a hand-written note makes you stand out—and conveys a deeper level of warmth and sincerity. Music At The Mansion Lapis Luna brings you the captivating music of the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s. The band’s style embraces music from the first half of the 20th century including hot jazz, early blues, big band, bebop and retro cha-cha, bossa nova, mambo and rumba. Their specialty is playing timeless melodies the way they were meant to be heard: vibrant, fun, romantic and cool. Led by jazz chanteuse Shawn Aileen Clark, Lapis Luna transports you to a long-gone era

of genuine romance and spirited swing. They come to Planting Fields to play holiday songs from their album Snowbound, along with obscure vintage winter music. Songs include “Warm December” and “Christmas Island” from the 1940s and “By the Fireside,” which was a hit in 1930, along with some holiday favorites with a twist. Join them for an evening of swinging winter music at 7 p.m. Enjoy a complimentary glass of wine. Visit www.eventbrite.com and search “Coe Hall” for tickets; $20 for members, $30 for nonmembers.
