Make Your Holidays Happier By Giving Back BY REBA PUTORTI
SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
The thoughts of sleigh bells jingling and chestnuts roasting on an open fire are upon us. Whenever you deem the ‘”official start” of the holiday season, I think we would all pretty much agree a major factor is when we put into perspective who we’re giving gifts to, and what those gifts will be. Whether you celebrate with family, friends, or just drink some hot chocolate in front of a fire, we are all reminded
of the time to give back. There are tons of stores that do toy drives, percentage of proceed donations, and simply send ‘warm wishes’ to those less fortunate. Here are some places to shop where you can get what you need, and feel extra good about doing it. The Body Shop sells Twice products like lotion and As Warm’s charother skincare items. On coal-striped hat select retail, a portion of the profits go back to the communities where they are made, like Honduras, Nepal or India, to help build modern schools for the children to have an easier access to education there. You may know that for every pair of TOMS shoes sold, the company donates a pair to a child in need, but did you know they do the same thing
The Body Shop’s Best of Body Butter Festive Dome, $27
with eyeglasses and coffee? The coffee purchase equates to a water donation elsewhere. Buy the family some cute gifts and help someone in need at the same time. Twice As Warm sells all the winter necessities like hats, gloves, and scarves. Their motto is “wear one, give one”. Each purchase provides a clothing item to someone in need. Buy for your family and someone else’s. Toys R Us, 7-11, Macy’s, the UPS store, Moe’s, and many others do Toys for Tots. Whatever way you find holiday cheer, help bring some to someone in need. You never know how little can go a long way.

The Star Wars X-Wing Knife Block BY RICH FORESTANO
RFORESTANO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
The five-piece Star Wars X-Wing Knife Block is a mustown for any fanatic of food or film. It’s sleek, solid of zinc alloy/plastic design bodes well for a display piece or for a foodie ready at the hip to take on the meal of the day. The cutlery is made of carbon stainless steel, making the set stronger than Obi Wan Kenobi’s grip on a stormtrooper’s mind. The cook knife handled chopping foods like celery, onions, etc., with ease, while the bread knife sliced through crusty treats quickly, yet maneuvered softer unsliced white bread with precision akin to an X-Wing’s proton torpedo. The carving knife was perfect for Thanksgiving, leaving clean cut meat to be devoured by families from all galaxies. The block’s utility knife cut meats of all kinds (even with stingy bones) with care. Rounding out the set is the paring knife, that peeled apples and smaller foods with accuracy that of a Jedi Knight. $79.95 at amazon.com

“Shop Nassau County” This Season With the holiday shopping season upon us, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and County Clerk Maureen O’Connell recently joined with Julie Marchesella, president of the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce, and small business owners to kick off a “Shop Nassau County” campaign. “I encourage all residents to support their hometown businesses this holiday season, and year-round, as local businesses are the heartbeat of Nassau County’s economy and make our communities stronger and better places to live, work and raise a family,” said Mangano. The Nassau County Industrial Development Agency, in partnership with the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce, launched a significant new marketing campaign aimed at encouraging residents to shop at local Nassau County merchants. Utilizing television, print, radio and social media the ads featured Nassau business owners. The campaign is part of the Nassau County IDA’s effort to assist small businesses as they are the lifeblood of our communities. “Shop Nassau County” benefits include: • Money spent here stays here
(keeping local dollars in the economy) • Jobs and wages (supporting local businesses provides support for the jobs they offer) • Stronger tax base • Nassau business owners invest in our community • Convenience & Green-Friendly (proximity reduces gas consumption) Small businesses play a critical role in our economy as they account for 98 percent of all businesses in New York State and employ more than 40 percent of the state’s private sector workforce. The nation’s 28 million small businesses create nearly two out of three jobs nationwide and have generated over 65 percent of the net new jobs since 1995. “With Nassau employers
contributing to the economic base and connectivity of our local communities, we must help raise awareness about the role they play and promote a business-friendly Nassau that attracts suppliers and distributors in similar industries,” said Mangano. The Nassau Council of Chambers of

11 Tips For Surviving The Office Party BY STEVEN PUETTNER
SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
We often talk about how much success in business depends on building strong, positive relationships. Relationships with clients and prospects are obvious, but equally important are the relationships with your co-workers and your bosses. At the holidays, you have one of the best opportunities to enhance relationships at work: the office holiday party. Follow a few simple guidelines to make the most of the event:
RSVP.
The party organizer’s most difficult task is to find out who will attend. Make his or her job easier by responding to invitations right away. Even if you aren’t sure you can attend, at least let the organizer know you will respond shortly. Then, follow through. the organizer when you RSVP.
Watch your intake.
Find out if the invitation includes spouses and significant others. Nothing could be more embarrassing for you and your significant other if he or she is the only non-employee at the party.
Dress appropriately.
If you are not sure what to wear, ask
Be a good wingman (or woman).
If your spouse or significant other is included, be sure to introduce him or her to your workmates and your boss. Don’t abandon him or her, and direct conversations to topics that will be interesting to him or her.
Enjoy the food, but take care not to overdo it. Asking for a doggie bag is off limits.
Watch your liquid intake.
The watchword should be moderation. You don’t want to consume too much and say or do things that you will need to apologize for the next day. Best advice: follow the “one-drink” rule.
Branch out.
Use the party as an opportunity to get to know your colleagues better. Find out their interests and a little bit about their lives. Don’t just talk to your best friend or one colleague all night. Interact with a variety of people—even with that co-worker who bugs you. You may find some common ground that will help in the office.
Spend some time with your boss.
This is your opportunity to grow your relationship. Just be careful not to monopolize his or her time.
‘Tis the season of giving.
Not a fan of office gift swaps? Participate to show you are a team player. Offices should set low price limits, and employees should stick to them. Find out if the gift should be wrapped or not.
Don’t over- (or under-) stay your welcome.
Arrive on time and stay at least through the main event, be it cocktails, dinner, or a gift swap. Take your leave at the same time as most other guests, so you aren’t the last person at the event.
Say thank you.
Be sure to thank your boss and the organizer before you leave. The next day, send separate notes or emails thanking them again. Follow these simple guidelines to ensure that a merry time is had by all, and that it’s a successful event for you. Great Gifts To Help Kids Learn BY ANTON MEDIA STAFF
SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
One of the best ways to motivate kids to learn is by making it fun, and the holiday season is the perfect opportunity to equip the kids in your life with gifts that are equal parts entertaining and educational. For some great gift ideas that turn what could be a chore into a good time, consider the following: Watch It Grow Whether you do-it-yourself or opt for a store-bought kit, a terrarium offers children a hands-on lesson in
horticulture, biology, earth science and responsibility. Terrariums, which make great gifts, can be used to grow beautiful plants and flowers, or edible herbs for the kitchen. Pair this gift with books about nature and gardening and you may inspire a green thumb for life. Smart Gaming Kids will always want to play video games, so why not allow them to learn while playing? Check out VTech’s InnoTV, an educational TV-connected gaming system designed with
preschoolers in mind (www.vtechkids. com/innotv). It features an easy-to-use kid-friendly wireless controller and learning games for ages 3-8 that introduce language arts, science, technology, engineering and math concepts and more. InnoTV also offers access to a huge educator-supported library of additional games on VTech’s Learning Lodge app store, as well as compatibility with a variety of InnoTab MAX cartridges. “The family gaming console has found a welcome place in many family rooms
Terrarium
for good reason,” said Dr. Eric Klopfer, VTech expert panel member and platform learning expert. “The console connected to the TV provides an interactive focal point for family gaming.” InnoTV comes with single-player, age-appropriate educational games (many aligned with Common Core curriculum standards), and allows for multiple players—providing opportunities for social play, which is important for preschoolers learning to share, cooperate and take turns. Make Music Many children wish to explore the world of music, but unfortunately, their schools may not offer the exact programs they are looking for. You can nurture musical talent and interest at holiday time, however. If your child is indecisive, consider a temporary rental of his or her instrument of choice and a starter pack of just a few lessons. Kids’ Size Science Bourgeoning scientists will love making their own observations and discoveries. Luckily, kids-size scientific apparatus are available for those just beginning to explore everything from cells of plants to the cosmos. Telescopes and microscopes designed with kids in mind can help young ones develop the skills needed to succeed in science. When making your gift list this season, don’t forget the notion that fun and learning are two peas in a pod.

Dessert Tips To Please All Your Party Guests BY ROBERT SILVERMAN
SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
Want to really flex your hosting muscles this holiday season? The best way to show you are the host with the most is by ensuring that dessert time is sweet for every guest. That means making sure all party goers have a delicious note to end their meal on. Here are a few easy tips for hosts to make sure everyone at the table, regardless of his or her dietary restrictions, enjoys dessert together.
Gluten-Free Guests
One in 133 Americans suffers from celiac disease and another 18 million have gluten sensitivity. For these celebrants, occasions where lavish sweets are served can be frustrating. But you can make your guests’ day happy if you shop smart. For instance, you can check out the gluten-free cakes of Inspired by Happiness (www. inspired-by-happiness.com). Certified gluten-free by the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness, they are made using only natural flavors, with no artificial colors or trans-fat. Flavors include “Dreamin’ of Chocolate Dark & White Chocolate Layer Cake,” “Dreamin’ of Strawberries White Chocolate Shortcake” and the new “Cravin’ for Cookies & Cream Layered Cake,” and can be found in the in-store bakery of retail grocery chains and supermarkets
Homemade sorbet topped with a mint garnish
including Target. Give your gluten-free guests the decadence they deserve with irresistible flavors and a homemade taste. If you shop right, these may become the most popular desserts you serve this season.
Vegan Visitors
For those who don’t eat eggs, milk and butter, dessert can seem tricky at first, but there are plenty of ways to create desserts that avoid these ingredients. Serve vegan guests a homemade sorbet topped with a mint garnish. Or, stick to your regular recipes and make some substitutions. Tofu, cornstarch and apple sauce can replace egg in pies and pudding. And a range of milk substitutes are available, including rice milk, soy milk and almond milk.
Fruit Only Fans
Whether you have guests who avoid dessert because of a specific health concern or simply are fans of fruit only, a fruit side will be a welcome addition to your dessert spread, especially after an indulgent meal. Provide guests with a fresh fruit salad side. This option will be enjoyed right alongside any and all of the other options in your spread. The holiday feast should be a joyous, festive occasion for all your guests throughout every course. Ensure you have dessert options that everyone can enjoy.

Holiday Mailing Tips BY CHRISTY HINKO
CHINKO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
Every year, holiday shipping should be getting easier with upgrades in technology, convenient shipping options and packing solutions, but getting your items to their destination ahead of the holiday takes a little extra planning and adhering to some reasonable shipping deadlines for many of the letter and parcel carriers. Delivery in time for the holidays depends, not only on getting your packages and Christmas cards to the shipping agent on time, but on the outer labeling and condition of the packed box.
Here are a few tips to packaging and sending a box or letter safely: Choose a box with enough room for cushioning material around the contents inside. Many boxes are rated for weight limits also. Choose a box that can handle the weight of the contents during transit. Place cushioning around your items. Close and gently shake the box to see whether there is enough
padding. Add more newspaper, packing foam, or plastic cushioning material if you hear things moving around. Whenever possible, use a new box. If you are reusing a box for shipping, make sure that old labels and markings are completely blackened out or removed. Tape your box shut and reinforce the seams with 2-inch wide tape. Use clear or brown packaging tape, reinforced packing tape, or paper tape. Do not use cord, string, or twine because it gets caught in mail processing equipment. If you are shipping a package with any of its lengths longer than 100 inches or exceeding 70 pounds, check with the intended carrier for specific instructions and packing directions. Using a complete and correct address is critical for efficient delivery. When shipping via United States Postal Service (USPS), always use the five digit zip code, plus four digit routing, when possible. For example 11040-5409. Many of the local carriers provide appropriate shipping boxes free of charge. Check the individual websites for ordering instructions for
additional empty boxes suitable for packing and mailing.

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE
Gifts For Gardening Enthusiasts BY CHRISTY HINKO
CHINKO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
Shopping for gardeners this holiday season? You can make their season a bit brighter by shopping with their favorite hobby in mind. Here are a few ideas that will put a smile on the face of those green-thumbed family members and friends:
by painting the side of the can with a unique design or your gift recipient’s name. Or buy a set of planters and give them the same painting treatment. When shopping this holiday season, don’t ignore your gift recipient’s hobbies and passions. There are plenty of gifts that complement the gardening lifestyle.
Songbirds that stick around Long Island need food and water through the winter months. (Photo by Christy Hinko)
Make A Statement Upgrade a hobby wardrobe with gear that’s not only stylish, but functional too. If your gardener is still watering, hedging, weeding and working in the yard in an old pair of beat-up sneakers, consider a pair of garden clogs designed for the specific chores associated with working in the yard or garden. Easy-to-clean and waterproof, they make a great present. Or consider a utility apron in your gift recipient’s favorite colors or pattern.

A birdbath and bird feeder will help attract birds and encourage them to linger in the garden longer. Unfortunately billions of songbirds are killed worldwide each year due to accidental collisions with window glass, according to Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Consider a unique gift that makes the area safer for flying friends. A high-tech liquid called WindowAlert UV Liquid can be applied to windows, containing a component that brilliantly reflects ultraviolet sunlight. This ultraviolet light, that’s invisible to humans, takes advantage of the keen eyesight of birds, creating a visual barrier on windows to help prevent fatal collisions. “Wildlife can beautify a garden. But birds and other wildlife don’t appear by chance. They seek habitats that provide them with food, shelter, and safety,” said Spencer Schock, founder of WindowAlert (www.windowalert.com).

If you spend the holiday season stressed out and over scheduled, chances are you’re not convinced that it’s “the most wonderful time of the year.” Long shopping lines, not-so-foolproof cookie recipes, family drama and the stress of holiday travel can leave anyone feeling like the Grinch. Tips To Ease Holiday Travel Stress
Ice skating at Bryant Park (Photo by Christy Hinko) An estimated 94.8 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home for the holidays, according to AAA. And to help ensure holiday cheer, the travel experts at Extended Stay America have partnered with the ultimate holiday
traveler, Santa Claus. Here are a few holiday travel tips: Picture Perfect Packing Not everyone has the luxury of a reindeer-powered sleigh and a magical satchel to effortlessly transport gifts.

Here are some foolproof packing tips. • Make a list and check it twice. Separate your essentials from your desirables, and be realistic with luggage limitations. • For travelers that belong to a frequent flyer program, take advantage of perks like free first checked bags or discounted early boarding rates. Use program discounts to transport multiple gifts at a flat rate or to ensure that more expensive items that you’d prefer to carry on have ample space in the airplane’s overhead bin. • Save gift-wrapping for once you’ve reached your destination to avoid extra security screening scrutiny. ‘Home’ for the Holidays Avoid overstaying your welcome at relatives by lodging at a home-like space of your own. An extended-stay style hotel with affordable nightly rates means family fun instead of family feud. Unwind in a spacious guest room and enjoy upgraded amenities, including free in-room Wi-Fi to stay connected to those far away and flat-screen televisions with premium channels to watch holiday favorites. On-site laundry centers allow for light packing on long trips and fully-equipped kitchens with full-size refrigerators provide the option to dine in or reheat leftovers.

Bring us a Figgy Pudding Don’t let being away from home limit you to store-bought dishes for holiday potlucks. If you’re staying at an extended-stay style hotel, take
advantage of an in-room kitchen to whip up a savory course or no-bake sweet treats, like drop cookies, fudges and cereal bars. Seasonal Savings Santa enlists the support of helpers to ensure his big travel day is stressfree. Holiday travelers should do the same. Consider the help of rewards programs to relieve budget stress. Many point-based loyalty programs require significant time and investment before you see any benefit. For valuable savings, enroll in one offering instant rewards, coupons and discounts at national retailers, rental car companies, restaurants and more. Avoid Cabin Fever Budget-friendly activities keep holiday spirits high. Enjoy winter festivals, ice skating, caroling, a friendly game of your favorite sport, or a car ride through the area’s most festive neighborhoods. ‘Tis the Season for Giving Spread a little charitable cheer to those less fortunate. This time of year lends itself to many service opportunities, so identify an organization or give back on your own with a special project. Simple gestures to spread goodwill include anonymous gifts, over-tipping for services or packing stockings for the homeless. Don’t let holiday travel be a source of stress. With smart strategies, an affordable and joyous holiday travel experience is possible.

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE
Ways To Give Back This Season BY ROBERT SILVERMAN
SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
When making this year’s holiday gift list, consider how you might also give back to your local community. The holiday season is the perfect time of year to do this, when volunteer and donation opportunities increase. Here are a few ideas to give back in your community:
The Gift of Literacy Only one-third of all students entering high school are proficient in reading, according to a National Assessment of Education Progress report. Brighten children’s smiles this holiday season while also giving them an opportunity to succeed at school and beyond. The Marine Corps Toys for Tots Foundation has given new toys to children in need for more than 60 years. The organization also extends its reach through a partnership with The UPS Store through the Toys for Tots Literacy Program, which provides economically disadvantaged children an opportunity to succeed in school and beyond. Donations can be made at The UPS Store locations nationwide or online at www.toysfortots.org/literacy. One-hundred percent of all proceeds go to support local children and literacy programs. Your donations go even further thanks to the Marine Corps Toys for Tots Foundation, which is able to purchase books at a deep discount. Visit www.theupsstore.com to find a participating location near you and make a donation that will help ensure families everywhere have access to books.

When you are baking for your own holiday party, make an extra batch or two and consider combining efforts with friends and neighbors to host a bake sale to raise money for a local charity. If you don’t have time to organize an event like this, you can still give back through your baking. Wrap packs of cookies or other goodies in bags as thank you gifts to your children’s teachers, coaches and others in your community who have served or been kind to your family all year.

Volunteer Your Time

One of the best ways to give back is by donating your valuable time. Make a trip to a local nursing home and spend time with residents who may not have family or anyone else to visit them this season. Additionally, soup kitchens are often in need of extra hands during the holidays. Ask your local organizations about volunteer opportunities. While holiday wish lists are often full of fun gadgets, clothes and toys, there are still many in your community lacking more basic necessities. This season, think beyond your personal wants and do your best to give back.
