Create Holiday Gifts That Keep On Giving BY MELINDA MYERS

SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

Make this holiday season one filled with creating memories and gifts that keep giving throughout the year. Terrariums have made a comeback and make wonderful do-it-yourself projects and gifts for beginning and experienced gardeners. They enable gardeners to continue to grow no matter the weather outdoors and can be updated and used as decorations throughout the year with some simple updating for holidays and other special occasions. Just add a few ceramic items like a Christmas tree ornament, ceramic bunny or other adornment or two that represent the season. Don’t know where to start? No problem. You can create your own from an old glass jar or vase or purchase an elegant terrarium with copper bottom guaranteed to create the perfect stage for your tabletop garden. Or purchase a terrarium kit that includes the plants, container and all you need. For the artist, young or old, and avid birder, consider a green birdhouse. These biodegradable birdhouses are made from 100 percent recycled paper and designed to last through one nesting season. You will have fun decorating it with stickers, markers or paint, making this a gift you and the birds will enjoy. Plus, once the season is over, there’s no need for cleaning. It can simply be added to the compost pile. Not feeling artistic? No worries. Give a decorative

treat for the birds. Those with live Christmas trees can extend their enjoyment by decorating the tree with colorful birdseed ornaments once it is moved outdoors. Make your own ornaments from suet, peanut butter and birdseed or purchase readymade ones. And no green thumb is needed for this DIY holiday beauty. Easy care waxed amaryllis bulbs (www. gardeners.com) are self-contained and easy to grow. The bulb is sealed in gold or silver wax, making it both decorative and low maintenance. There’s no watering or container needed. Just set it in a bright location and wait for the floral display to appear before your eyes. You’ll be enjoying big blooms for several weeks. Stay on your diet as the holiday approaches with a sugar-free advent calendar. You can make your own from felt and fabric glue or start a family tradition by purchasing a handcrafted advent calendar. Make this the year for creating memorable gifts, trying something new or packaging DIY projects that are sure to provide seasons of fun and beauty.

Paper birdhouses last one season and can easily be recycled after the last birds leave for the winter.

Birdseed ornaments are a great way to treat your feathered friends who have decided to stick around for the winter.

Making Holidays Bright And Affordable BY NATHANIEL SILLIN

SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

Already dreading what you’ll spend this holiday season? It doesn’t have to be that way. Gifts aren’t the only budget-busting culprit during the holidays. The weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s are also a peak time for spending on groceries, travel, events, entertainment, energy, clothes and meals out. Financial advisors recommend you use no more than 1.5 percent of your annual income on holiday spending (www.practicalmoneyskills.com/holiday), so consider the following suggestions to keep it under control: Start with a list and make a budget. Begin your planning by listing every possible holiday expense you’ll face—and don’t stop at gifts. Be open about money trouble. If you are facing financial difficulties during the holiday season, don’t spend to hide the problem. Don’t be ashamed to make adjustments and tell friends and family

members that you’d like to temporarily downsize your spending until conditions improve. They might actually appreciate a spending reprieve, too. Build a bargain-hunting strike force. Let friends and family know

Evaluate all transportation costs. Do you really need to run out of one or two items at a time? Designate certain days of the week for particular items, keep an eye out for free delivery and see if friends and family might want to share errands. Those with large vehicles or trucks can help move, deliver and even install appliances or electronics if they have the skills to do so. Smart transportation choices extend to car pools or public transportation for events and entertainment.

Take a Break from the Mall

Leverage your creativity. If there’s something you make or do really well that people love, consider making such accomplishments into gifts. From specialty food items your friends enjoy, to clothing or art, anything done well can be a gift. Don’t rule out lessons or skilled labor as potential holiday gifts, particularly for relatives who can’t afford such services at this time. Smart shopping for ingredients or supplies can make such creative gifts a real money saver.

Come to Old Westbury Gardens. Warm up by a crackling fire, visit with Santa, enjoy cider and cookies, create kids’ crafts, find unique presents and classic ornaments in our Holiday Gift Shop, listen to live concerts and choral groups, and tour the beautifully decorated rooms in this amazing, historic mansion - all at a relaxed, peaceful pace.

you’re looking for particular toys, gifts, foods or decorating items and volunteer to do the same for them. Save and share coupons. Encourage your group to find resources, check prices and share requests and ideas via social media. Results can come back in a matter of minutes.

Build a year-round gift stash. If there are gifts or foodstuffs you can buy on sale and keep for a while, you’ll have a ready source of thank-you gifts for hosts, teachers

or co-workers year-round. Set aside a similar area for cards, gift tags and wrapping paper. Also keep in mind that many retailers put holiday-themed items on sale before the holidays are finished. If you think you’ll need these items next year, grab your coupons, take advantage and put those items aside for future gift giving. Late saving for gifts? Do it anyway. If you don’t have a holiday fund set up, don’t let that keep you from starting one. Every little bit helps. Take 5-10 percent of your next paycheck and set it aside, doing it each week throughout the holidays. If you keep it up, your holiday fund can eventually become an emergency fund to be used for other savings goals, including retirement. Take notes for next holiday season. Create a paper or digital file where you can collect ideas for next year. Check print and online resources like Consumer Reports for items that can be bought at specific times of the year at a discount so you are able to hide them for the holidays—but remember where you hid them. Bottom line: Keeping holidays affordable isn’t a challenge when you’re willing to do a little planning, idea-sharing and record-keeping. Make it an activity you can do year-round. COOKIE RECIPES Sno-Ball Cookies

2 c flour 2 c walnuts, chopped fine 1/4 c sugar 1 c butter, softened 1 tsp vanilla

Host A Holiday Cookie Swap BY CHRISTY HINKO

CHINKO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

As holiday traditions go, attending or hosting a cookie swap is a great way to multi-task throughout the season. It offers a reason to get together with friends or others that you might otherwise be a little too busy to make time for when things really start to get too busy. Getting together for a cookie swap lets you exchange tokens of friendship, while making a well-deserved shortcut to your holiday baking task. The basic idea for a successful cookie swap is to prepare a bunch of your own favorite cookies, then exchange them and the recipe with other cookie swappers, who have also brought their own favorite cookies. It doesn’t have to be as formal as it might seem. It is a very easy get-together, actually. Invite friends, relatives, neighbors, coworkers, or anyone who loves cookies.

Tips For Hosting

1. Start inviting as much as a month out, December calendars fill fast. 2. Try to schedule your party at least two weeks before the holiday. Cookies are usually suitable for freezing until your main holiday event. 3. Plan a swap for after lunch or dinner, so it doesn’t involve serving a meal, just simple snacks, fresh fruit or veggies with dips and chips. Or schedule it for a suitable dessert hour, you can sample the cookies being swapped with a tall glass of milk, hot chocolate, hot cider, coffee, or tea. 4. Track your guests’ responses. Ask

everyone to respond with the type of cookies they plan to bring, avoiding duplications. 5. A week out, make sure each baker knows how many cookies to bake, so each guest gets to take a hearty sample home. A reasonable suggestion is for each guest to bring six dozen of their own cookies, about two or three batches of a regular cookie recipe. Each guest will leave with six dozen cookies, no matter how many guests attend. Or base the number of cookies to bring on the number of guests, including yourself. For example, if you expect 12 guests, ask each person to bring 13 dozen cookies. The advantage to this approach is that everyone will leave with a full dozen of each cookie. 6. Bakers should bake their cookies about three days out. 7. Remind guests to bring their own empty tins or zipping plastic bags to take their cookies home in. 8. Ask guests to bring an extra half dozen of their cookies for the actual party, for sampling. 9. Ask guests to bring enough copies of their recipes for each guest. Or, have guests email their recipes ahead of time so you can print them on a standard-sized recipe card, 3x5 or 4x6 index cards. For a souvenir, bind them into a mini-cookbook for each guest. 10. Once everyone arrives, give everyone a chance to talk about their cookie, ingredients, its origin, or special meaning. 11. Think all year long. Cookie swaps work just as well for any time of the year, not just Christmas.

Combine all ingredients; batter will be crumbly. Shape into small 1-inch balls or small crescents. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 325 degrees for 18 to 20 minutes. Roll in powdered sugar as soon as you take them out of the oven. Roll again after cooled, if desired. (Recipe courtesy of Dawn Hinko)

Chocolate Sambuca Cookies

12 oz semisweet chocolate squares 4 tbsp margarine 3 large eggs 1 c sugar (divided in half) 1 c ground almonds 1/3 c Sambuca liqueur 3/4 tsp baking soda 1/3 c powdered sugar 2/3 c flour Melt chocolate and butter together on low heat. Add all ingredients except powdered sugar and first half of sugar. Mix well and refrigerate for four hours. Mix together powdered sugar and second half of sugar. Make small balls from the refrigerated mix and coat them with sugar mix. Place balls two inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 10 to 12 minutes at 350 degrees. Note: you may want to coat your hands with flour while rolling dough into balls. (Recipe courtesy of the late Charlene Herzic)

Cream Cheese Cookies

Blend: 1/2 c shortening 8 oz. cream cheese, softened 1 cup sugar Add: 1 tsp vanilla 2 cup flour 2 egg yolks 1/2 tsp salt Use teaspoon size portion of dough. Drop dough (not rolled) onto ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 10 to 12 minutes at 350 degrees. Makes 4 dozen. (Recipe courtesy of Natalie Werner)

Basic Cookie Mix

1 box cake mix (any flavor) 1/3 cup oil 2 tbsp water 1 egg Mix all ingredients well. Drop by spoonfuls onto sheet. Bake 375 for 13 minutes or a minute to two longer for browned edges. Variations: *Add chopped nuts, candy, fruit, etc to dough. *Zest lemon or orange into dough. *Mix 1 part cinnamon, 4 parts sugar in bowl. Drop balls of dough and roll in mixture. *Roll dough out and use cutters to shape. *Wrap dough around candy pieces. *Roll into ropes, roll one in red sprinkles/food coloring and intertwine for candy canes. *Color dough green, roll into ropes and make wreaths. Decorate with red hots. *Cookie tarts in mini-muffin pan. Fill with chocolate chip, pudding, etc. *Bar cookies (spice mix) with chocolate chips, nuts, raisins, topped with frosting.

Don’t know what to get the wine connoisseur in your family this year? Inspired by the giving spirit of the harvest and the holiday seasons, the Woodbridge Harvest Wine Set is the ideal holiday or hostess gift for the wine lover or chef in your life. This limited-edition kitchen set created by Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi includes an apron, pot holder and wine tote benefiting www.ampleharvest.org. Since you can’t give a wine gift without wine, consider one of Woodbridge’s many delicious reds or crisp whites to stuff in the tote. Or perhaps you want to complete the gift with a bottle of the special Harvest Spiced Red Blend (available $6.99 at major grocery stores nationwide), which matches the design of the set. “At Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi, we are proud to create approachable, high-quality wines like our new Harvest Spiced Red Blend that are perfect for sharing with family and friends,” said Jaymie Schoenberg, director of marketing. “At this time of year, we think especially

about sharing with those in need, and are honored to introduce the Harvest Wine Set to help share healthy meals with deserving families across the country.” On sale through Dec. 31, gift sets will be sold for $35 (www.amazon.com), with all proceeds donated to the charity and helping support those in need by providing struggling American families with fresh fruit and vegetables from local gardens.

5 Tips For Outwitting Porch Pirates During The Gift-Giving Season Package-snatching Blackbeards may also hack into online tracking systems

BY BRITTANY THOMAS

SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

Online shopping has made life easier for consumers—and is especially handy during the holidays, but it’s also created more opportunities for “porch pirates,” the thieves who prey on those parcels left on our doorsteps. Many porch pirates are low-tech, simply cruising neighborhoods where they know deliveries are taking place and grabbing the unattended packages. But porch pirates who also happen to be cyber criminals can use your own technology against you, said Gary Miliefsky, CEO of SnoopWall (www. snoopwall.com), a company that specializes in cyber security. “A more sophisticated porch pirate might send you an SMS message or email with malware,” Miliefsky said. “That would let them gain access to your computer or smartphone, and they could install a RAT (Remote Access Trojan). Then they can

eavesdrop on your orders and deliveries.” They also might be able to locate you through the geolocating feature on your phone, he said. That would tell them when you are away from home, the final link in their well-laid plan. “If they know you aren’t home and that a package is scheduled for delivery, it’s going to be easy for them to steal it,” Miliefsky said.

Miliefsky offers these tips for outwitting porch pirates and keeping those packages safe: • Get permission to ship all your packages to work. That way they aren’t left unguarded at your doorstep for hours where anyone walking by could snatch them. If this arrangement works out, be sure to tell all your friends and family also to ship packages to your

work address. • Ask a friend or neighbor to receive your packages for you. You might not be home on work days, but plenty of people are. Trusted friends who are retired or who work at home might be happy to let you have packages delivered to them for safe keeping. • If a neighbor can’t receive your packages and you can’t get them at work, another option is available. Miliefsky suggests trying Doorman

(www.dorrman.co), a service that lets you arrange for a package to be held at a warehouse until you arrive home. Then you can arrange delivery for evening hours that better suit you. • Disable geolocation on your smartphone so that porch pirates—or other hackers for that matter— can’t track your location. No need to make it easier on them. • Set up a live recording video camera aimed at your porch. That could allow you to spot a theft as it happens and alert law enforcement, or at least provide you with video later that might help identify the porch pirates. “Porch pirates count on you being lax with your defenses,” Miliefsky said. “But with a little preparation, you can thwart their plans and leave them empty-handed.”

Give Great Books To Kids BY ROBERT SILVERMAN

SPECIALSECTIONS@ANTONMEDIGROUP.COM

For a merry holiday season, fun new books make great gifts for kids. Don’t know what’s the latest and greatest in the world of kid’s literature? Here are four new titles to consider for the young book lovers in your life:

A Classic, Retold

Home Alone, which arrived in theaters 25 years ago, is one of the top grossing live-action comedies of all time. Now, illustrator Kim Smith has reimagined the John Hughes story as a classic Christmas fable. Home Alone: The Classic Illustrated Storybook comes complete with bumbling burglars, brilliant booby-traps, and a little boy named Kevin who’s forced to fend for himself. Through a series of comic adventures, Kevin learns lessons about responsibility and the importance of family.

Serial Adventure

Followers of the Miss Peregrine series will be excited to receive The Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children boxed set featuring all three novels in the series, including the newly released Library of Souls: The Third Novel of Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children. This action-packed series includes a special collector’s envelope of 12 peculiar photographs, highlighting the most memorable moments of this extraordinary three-volume fantasy.

Spooky Mystery

Meet Warren the 13th, of Warren the 13th and the All-Seeing Eye, a

cursed 12-year-old Victorian bellhop who’s terribly unlucky, yet perpetually optimistic, hard-working, and curious. Orphan Warren’s pride and joy is his family’s hotel, but he’s been miserable ever since his evil Aunt Annaconda took over the management. Annaconda believes a mysterious treasure is hidden somewhere on the grounds, and she’ll do anything to find it. If Warren wants to preserve his family’s legacy, he’ll need to find the treasure first—if the hotel’s many strange guests don’t beat him to it. This middle-grade adventure features illustrations on every page and a lavish two-column Victorian design.

True Tales for Athletes

Help make every goal, touchdown, and championship of all the greats comes to life, from Babe Ruth (so incorrigible that his parents put him in reform school at age seven) to Muhammad Ali (who learned to fight at age 12 after a thief stole his bicycle). Kid Athletes is packed with inspirational stories from the world of sports, sharing tales from the childhoods of famous athletes. Billie Jean King rose from modest circumstances to win 39 Grand Slam championships; Wilma Rudolph triumphed over polio to become the fastest woman on earth; and martial arts legend Bruce Lee credited his success, in part, to childhood dance lessons. Have lit lovers on your list? While a gift card to a book retailer is nice, you can put even more thought into the present with a new exciting title. Robert Silverman writes for Statepoint.
