Try something new to give your yard a fresh look this season By Karen Musgrave

about getting outdoors and creating comfortable “rooms” that mimic the indoors but allow you to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Build a Summer Kitchen While many people focus on creating a dining space where they can eat outdoors, you can take it one step further. Create a space where you can cook and prepare cocktails outside.

Grow Food While this may not sound like a new idea, try growing herbs and vegetables in more locations throughout your property. Add a small planter with herbs to your outdoor dining table, plant a tomato plant in the middle of a huge pot of marigolds, line your walkway with lettuce and Swiss chard instead of begonias and petunias. This concept is called companion planting and it’s a genius way to pack a lot of punch into your garden while still making it aesthetically pleasing and cohesive. Brighten Up Everything you use outdoors this year should be bright, from your cushions and planters to your umbrellas, flowers and fences. Try shades of red, purple, blue, gold or green to add color to your space. Think of your favorite tropical vacation getaway and recreate those colors in your yard. Add Garden Art For many years angels, birdbaths and garden gnomes were the only sculptures found in the

ardening offers us the opportunity to use our imaginations and expand our homes into the great outdoors. Every single year you can try something new—a color theme, new planters, garden statuary, patio furniture—all easy ways to freshen up your landscape and create an oasis for you and your family to enjoy. This year, challenge yourself to look outside the traditional box of garden fads. 2016 is all

Install a complete outdoor kitchen or start small with a grill, fire pit or smoker. Add a weatherproof shelving unit or cabinet to store unbreakable dishes, silverware and glasses. A small outdooruse refrigerator can keep beverages cold and serve as a makeshift counter for cutting lemons and limes. Add a freestanding umbrella to keep the sun out of your eyes and voilà—you have an outdoor summer kitchen.

average backyard, but so many options are currently available in the world of garden statuary. Cast stone garden statues are made in a variety of colors and styles including dragons, whimsical planters, frogs, pet statues and even stone planters that look just like wood. Go Modern Modern gardens created with water-saving succulents, grasses and tropical plants like elephant ears create a streamlined look in any outdoor space. Use simple pottery and outdoor furniture to complete the look. Modern design works especially well in small spaces such as a balcony or small deck. Create a Special Space for Loved Ones A favorite trend for 2016 is designing spaces for those you love the most—namely pets and children. Make spending time outdoors fun by taking their needs into consideration and creating a place that keeps them engaged. For pets Think about what your furry friend may enjoy and where he would want to hang out and play. Is there a path through the bushes

For children Get them fully involved in the process of planting and harvesting the garden. Try growing specific vegetables that your children enjoy eating. Sunflowers and peas are easy to grow, and the large seeds make it easy for small fingers to plant. This spring, let your guard down and take some chances in your outdoor spaces. Don’t Stress the Spring Cleaning ith the rain flowing and the flowers growing, now’s the time for spring cleaning, and the task doesn’t have to terrify you. The season for fresh starts, spring is the perfect time to reduce clutter and get more organized. Here’s everything you need to know to keep your house in check—inside and out. Cleaning the Gutter Many people think this chore is extremely difficult, but it‘s actually quite simple. The height of your home will determine how high you’ll need to climb on a ladder. On opposite sides of your ladder, there should be two hooks across from each other. The hooks will hold two buckets: one for your tools and one for dumping the debris from the gutter. Put on work gloves and remove excess leaves before attempting to clean the gutter. Once that’s completed, begin scooping out debris from the gutter with a trowel. Then, use a hose to wash out any remaining material from the gutter. Inspecting the Roof During the winter, your roof takes a terrible beating, so it is important to check for any damage from

who attempt to repair their roof themselves wind up creating more costly damage in the long run.

Using these fun tips, you can even get the kids to help By Rachel Hirschheimer

severe storms. Caution: Don’t feel obligated to go up there yourself and don’t be embarrassed to hire a professional if this job gives you even the slightest jitters. But if going up on the roof is something you’re comfortable with, then go right ahead. Before climbing up, tell someone where you’re going in case of an emergency. Avoid inspecting the roof on rainy, muggy days. To make this job more enjoyable, go on a warm, sunny spring day. Start by looking for buckling or missing shingles, clumped moss and lichen. If you spot moss and lichen, that may be an indication that your roof is decaying. Call a professional to fix any problems you discover. Often, people

Shining the Deck Giving your backyard deck a nice shine involves more than just purchasing a sealer. Todd Kirschner, co-owner of Trio Hardware in Plainview, explains that the type of deck material will determine how someone should go about cleaning it first. “There is an array of different types of cleaners for each different kind of surface,” says Kirschner. And if someone is looking to wash their deck with a pressure washer, he advises they keep in mind what the deck is made of. “For pressure washers, if it is a softer substrate then you want to go with a lighter nozzle, whereas if it is more dense you can go heavier without causing damage,” says the Trio Hardware co-owner. To give the deck a nice shine, you can then use a sealer, also available for a variety of surfaces. Clearing Out the Garage People often use their garage for storage, but storage can quickly turn into messy piles of stuff.

Make It Fun To finish faster, enlist the help of your children. It will teach them responsibility; and by inventing entertaining games and activities, you can turn this cringe-inspiring chore into fun family time. Turn Up the Tunes Cranking up the volume on your kids’ favorite songs will energize everyone, speed up the chore and lighten the mood.

Incorporating these simple tricks will free up space. With a bike rack, bicycles don’t have to monopolize valuable real estate—they can hang from the ceiling and wall, taking up zero floor space. As the spring sports season begins, the flexible and easy-to-mount Rubbermaid FastTrack Ball Rack can hold basketballs, soccer balls and footballs. Suspended shelves are also helpful for storing sports bags and outdoor toys. Organizing Kitchen Cabinets The time has come to throw out the open bags of chips that have been sitting in your cabinet since the year 2000. If you can’t remember purchasing some of the food in your panty and

it’s just sitting there taking up space, discard it. Donate unopened cans and snacks that you don’t plan to eat to a local food bank. To make finding things easier, group similar items together and place each category, such as canned vegetables, cereal and spices, on its own shelf. Sifting Through the Toy Closet If your children have toys they no longer play with, get rid of them. Either donate them to local charities, sell them or your child can use the new KidsTrade app to swap their toys with friends. The app is safe, because kids can only trade with kids from their own school under parental supervision. ASA

MOVING HERE WAS THE

Timing Games Turn cleaning into a game by encouraging your kids to race each other. Start by labeling three bins “Donate,” “Sell” and “Organize.” With a pile of toys in front of them, they’ll have to quickly figure out which toys they want to keep and which ones they want to give away. Start the clock and the first one to separate the toys wins. Plan a Garage Sale After removing all unwanted items from around your house, hosting a garage sale is a terrific way to get rid of your stuff. It’s a great family event, too, and can teach kids the value of money as well as the idea of recycling, reducing and reusing. Help kids hone their math skills by allowing them to price items and count the change. Use the profits for a special family day and teach the joys of giving by donating unsold items to a charity that the children select. Now, take a breath and enjoy your clean space and the kids who helped you get it that way.

Easy projects to perk up your home this spring By Kimberly Dijkstra

fter a winter full of white and gray, it’s time to ring in spring with pops of pigment. Brighten your decor—and your mood—with these fun DIY projects. Whether or not you have crafting experience, these simple projects are perfect for adding a springy touch to any room.

Clothespin Wreath

Trendy paper straws cast a ray of sunshine over your desk.

Blogger Sabrina Singer-Towns uses everyday objects in alternative ways to change up her decor each season. Wooden clothespins, available at most big-box and home-improvement stores, arranged in a circle make an eclectic wreath and are easily customized to your tastes. Singer-Towns’ used scrapbook papers, decorative tape (also known as washi tape) and glitter to decorate her wreath. “I attached my paper strips to the clothespins using clear glue, but you could also use Mod Podge,” she says. After decorating, glue the clothespins to a heavy cardboard circle, which you can cut out yourself or buy premade. The number of clothespins required will depend on the size of the circle form. “The bigger the circle, the more clothespins you will need,” says Singer-Towns. Plan to use between 50 and 80 clothespins. For a different look, try gluing strips of fabric or ribbon to the clothespins, or painting them with acrylic paint. To personalize this project, use the clothespins to hold photographs or greeting cards. Tie a ribbon to the wreath and hang your new creation on the wall to brighten up your space. For complete instructions and more photos, visit www.superfluouslysabro.blogspot.com /2012/01/valentines-clothespin-wreath.html.

Pinterest lovers know that paper straws are trending this year. For a quick project with big impact, hot glue decorative paper straws around a cardboard circle form. Add a pretty ribbon bow or a flower accessory and hang this cheerful ray of sunshine above your desk. For detailed instructions on how to make the wreath to the left, featuring Party Stripes Paper Straws by Kikkerland, visit www.papersource.com/blog/diy/how-to-paper-straw-wreath.

Yarn-Wrapped Vases Yarn is a simple and elegant way to add color to any room. Available in endless colors and textures, you can choose the one that’s perfect for you. Variegated yarn will result in stripes or will form fluid pools of color. For this project, you’ll need a glass vase, an all-purpose glue, such as Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue, and a ball of yarn. Here, we’ve used Premier Yarns Cotton Fair in color 32-04 Cloud Gazing, a cotton-acrylic blend available at Michaels. Your local knitting store will likely be filled with an enormous selection of beautiful yarns and IKEA offers a variety of glass vases and containers. Start by adding a ring of glue around the rim, adhere the yarn, then begin rotating the vase. As you wrap, use your fingers to gently push the strands of yarn together and eliminate gaps. Add glue no more than 1 inch at a time so it doesn’t dry. When you reach the bottom, clip the yarn and secure down the end with a drop of glue. Make a small grouping or strew the vases throughout your home. Be sure to fill them with flowers— the ultimate sign of spring. For a more rustic look, wrap your vases in twine or hemp cord. Also consider wrapping flower pots for indoor or outdoor use. Michaels (www.michaels.com), AC Moore (www.acmoore.com), JoAnn Fabrics & Crafts (www. joann.com) and Paper Source (www.papersource.com) carry

1 2 3 most of the supplies required for these projects. Get inspired and enjoy decorating your home DIY style. For more photos of these projects, visit www.longislandweekly.com /do-it-yourself-decorating.

make quick work of [it],” Malaer says. “Use a large drop cloth in an outside space.” Malaer prefers to paint them by hand with acrylic paints, easily found in a rainbow of colors at your local craft store. “You can get into the nooks and crannies of the branch better,” she says,

”and I feel like you waste less paint this way.” Malaer suggests putting a clear coat on the branches after they dry. “Any spray acrylic gloss enamel will do,” she says. “I have branches that I made years and years ago and they look just as good as the day they were painted.” Display the painted branches alone in a vase, or among a flower arrangement. Malaer has been featured in Better Homes & Gardens and DIY Magazine. To see more of Malaer’s creations, visit her Etsy shop at www.etsy.com/shop/ carriageoakcottage. ASA

Etsy shop owner Kristin Malaer looks to nature to beautify her home for spring. She picks up fallen tree branches from the yard and paints them with vivid colors for a minimalistic addition to her decor. “Picking the right branches are key,” she says. “Choose branches that are [dry], smooth and have no flaking bark. Also, inspect the branches. Steer clear from any that have holes—a good indication that insects are in there.” Clean the branches with a dry cloth to remove any dirt. Next, decide which type of paint to use. “Spray paint will
