Halloween: A History There’s more to this holiday than tricks and treats BY JENNIFER FAUCI

jfauci@antonmediagroup.com

T

he haunted holiday comes around every 31st of October and for kids, it’s a time for costumes and candy. But how about a lesson in what Halloween actually is? It is widely believed that Halloween originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off evil spirits as it was the one day when the undead walked among the living. On the heels of Halloween is All Saints Day, which came about around the eighth century A.D., when Pope Gregory III designated Nov. 1 as a time to honor all saints, incorporating some of the traditions of Samhain. On this day, people attend church services, pray for the dead by visiting cemeteries and lighting candles and then celebrate their lives by eating soul cakes. All Hallows Eve, or Halloween, has since evolved into a day of activities that include trickor-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive costume-themed gatherings, telling scary stories and eating sweet treats. The holiday is also said to have pagan roots, as it marked the end of the pastoral cycle—a time when crops would have been gathered and placed in storage for the long winter ahead. Samhain itself was Christianized as Halloween by the early church, however, some consider it separate from festivals. To Americans, the symbol of

Halloween is a jack-o-lantern. In Ireland and Scotland, it is the turnip that has traditionally been carved. As for the modern imagery associated with Halloween today, many of it is drawn from traditional Christian eschatology, national customs, works of Gothic and horror literature and films. Skull imagery is usually found in memento mori and vanitas compositions while the back walls of churches are adorned with a depiction of the Last Judgment by Michelangelo, complete with a heaven and hell and angels and devils. Returning to Ireland, the heart of Halloween, we find many myths, tales and legends. Did you know that orange and black, the colors of Halloween, are the colors of death in Celtic legend? October 31 also marked the end of the long days and the drawing in of winter. In fact, for a place of such history, ritual and ruins, it’s no surprise that the world’s biggest Halloween party is held in Ireland in the city of Derry every year. More than 30,000 people take to the streets, dressed in ghoulish garb from the Otherworld as music and a carnival proceeds through the town. The custom of Halloween was brought to America by Irish famine emigrants in the 1840s and since then, it has been a day that many look forward to every year.

Top Horror Movies

BY FRANK VIRGA

fvirga@antonmediagroup.com

veryone loves a good scare and these horror films are the perfect flicks to evoke quite the fright in the dead of night.

Bride of Frankenstein This 1935 sequel to Frankenstein has Boris Karloff reprising his role as the iconic monster and remains the standard by which all others are judged. Here the monster speaks (something Karloff strongly objected to), and sees his creator Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive) join forces with the evil Dr. Pretorious (Ernest Thesiger) to create a mate for him (Elsa Lanchester). The monster and his bride to be are introduced, she rejects him and he utters the infamous “she hate me, like others!” line and it all falls apart from there. A memorable score, weird camera angles and creepy lighting helped make this perhaps the greatest horror film of all time. Salem’s Lot Directed by Tobe Hooper, this 1979 TV mini-series based on the Stephen King novel stars David Soul (Starsky and

H IS WHERE YOUR

Hutch) as Ben Mears, a successful writer who returns to his small hometown to write about the Marsten House—a reputedly haunted hilltop property there. An increasing number of locals are disappearing and dying, and the house’s evil persona centers around an ancient vampire and Richard Straker (a creepy turn by veteran actor James Mason) who both reside there. Ritual offerings, wooden stakes through the heart and a frightening vampire all make for a truly memorable mix and an absolute classic. A Nightmare on Elm Street Written and directed by horror master Wes Craven, this 1984 frightfest spawned a long list of sequels, but the original is the best. Welcome Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), who attacks young people in their nightmares. Young Nancy Thompson’s mom reveals that there in fact once was a child murderer named Fred Krueger who lived in their town, and was burned alive by the town’s vengeful parents in an act of vigilante justice. The nightmares soon turn to reality as the bodies pile up with Freddy in his burned, tattered

clothes and blade-fixed work glove keeping us on the edge of our seats the entire time. Halloween One of Hollywood’s most successful franchises with 11 films, the original once again is not the only best of the series, but perhaps one of the most frightening films ever made. Directed by John Carpenter (who also composed the haunting score) finds Michael Myers, who murdered his sister as a young boy, escaped from a sanitarium returning to his childhood home of Haddonfield, IL, and being pursued by his psychiatrist, Dr. Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasence). As Michael stalks and kills teenage babysitters on Halloween night, he zeros in on Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and attacks her, she manages to fend him off long enough for Dr. Loomis to shoot him off a balcony, and we see his body lying on the ground below—until Loomis looks down again and Michael is gone. The Exorcist Based on William Peter Blatty’s 1971 novel, the film follows the demonic possession of 12-year-old Regan MacNeil (Linda Blair) and her rescue by exorcism. After playing with a Ouija board, MacNeil conjures up an imaginary friend named Captain Howdy, and things begin to get very strange. Regan emits mysterious noises, obscenities and truly bizarre behavior. After consultations and tests with a number of physicians, a psychological condition is deemed the problem and an exorcism is recommended. Fathers Karras and Merrin begin the ritual that sees Regan speaking in tongues, head spinning and, of course, the pea soup vomit scene. Karras wrestles the demon in Regan’s body as it enters his own killing him and the young girl awakens as her old self.

Psycho The 1960 Alfred Hitchcock classic that kept people sleeping with the lights on for years, real estate secretary Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) absconds with a client’s $40,000 payment and takes off to join her boyfriend and live happily ever after—except that she stops to spend the night at the Bates Motel. She meets proprietor Norman Bates and overhears an argument ensue between him and his mother about having a strange woman invited into their home, a foreboding old house on the hill behind the motel. Next comes the infamous shower scene where we bid farewell to Marion. As the police close in on the missing Marion, we discover that Norman murdered his mother years earlier, kept her mummified body in the basement and “assumed her personality,” killing any woman he began to have interest in out of jealousy. The Silence of the Lambs FBI trainee Clarice Starling is assigned to interview the incarcerated Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lecter, former psychiatrist and serial killer in hopes of gaining insight on their pursuit of serial killer Buffalo Bill, who kills young women and skins them. Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) is cerebral and charming in their encounters, offering information to Starling that he says will lead to Buffalo Bill’s capture—on the condition he’s moved to another facility. Meanwhile, Buffalo Bill abducts a senator’s daughter and Starling, is engaged in a series of psychological twists and turns at the hand of Lecter as she tries to save the girl. During his prison transfer, Lecter escapes and disappears. Starling discovers Buffalo Bill’s location in a multi-room basement where the girl is still alive. Starling shoots and kills Bill and saves the girl. The final scene? Starling gets a call from Lecter, with the assurance he will not pursue her any longer, announcing he’s “having an old friend for dinner.”

Scary Classics A roundup of iconic Tim Burton and Ray Harryhausen films BY ANTHONY MURRAY

amurray@antonmediagroup.com

When you think of artists Tim Burton or Ray Harryhausen, you’re instantly reminded of some of the most classic and eccentric horror/fantasy films that were ever created. Although both Burton and Harryhausen cater to different audiences and generations with their films, one thing is for certain. The films of these visionaries will continue to be admired for years to come because of their daringness and innovation. Take a trip down memory lane with this roundup of some of the most classic Burton and Harryhausen films.

1

Beetlejuice This Burton-directed fantasy comedy horror 1988 film revolves around a recently deceased young couple played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis who become ghosts who haunt their former idyllic Connecticut country home. The two ghouls are joined by an often obnoxious and devious poltergeist named Betelgeuse (pronounced Beetlejuice), who was portrayed by Michael Keaton from the Netherworld, who tries to scare away the new inhabitants permanently. The film spawned an animated television series, video games and a musical as well.

2

Jason and the Argonauts Jason and the Argonauts was a 1963 Anglo-American independently made fantasy film that was based on Greek mythology that is most notably known for its iconic fight scene that featured seven skeleton warriors. The film starred Todd Armstrong as the eponymous hero Jason, along with Nancy Kovack, Honor Blackman, and Gary Raymond. Shot in Eastman Color, the film was made in collaboration with stop-motion animation master Harryhausen, who claimed that Jason and the Argonauts was one of the best films he ever created.

3

Edward Scissorhands This 1990 American romantic dark fantasy film was directed and produced by Burton. In Edward Scissorhands, Johnny Depp plays an artificial man named Edward, an unfinished creation who has scissor blades instead of hands. Edward is taken in by a suburban family where he falls in love with their teenage daughter Kim, who was played by Winona Ryder. The idea of Edward Scissorhands came from a drawing that Burton did when

he was a teenager reflecting his feelings of isolation and being unable to communicate with people around him.

4

20 Million Miles to Earth 20 Million Miles to Earth was a 1957 American black and white science fiction monster film that was directed by Nathan H. Juran and was developed to showcase the stop-motion animation of Harryhausen. The film tells the story of a manned space flight from Venus, which crash lands in the Mediterranean, losing its most precious cargo, reptilian eggs, from the planet’s surface. They come into the possession of an Italian zoologist who watches as one hatches to reveal a rapidly-growing monster. His American granddaughter, Marisa, and returned astronaut, Calder, must battle with the American and Italian military to corral the creature before it destroys everything in its path.

5

The Nightmare Before Christmas The Nightmare Before Christmas is a 1993 American stop-motion animated musical dark fantasy Halloween-Christmas film that was produced and conceived by Burton. It tells the story of Jack Skellington, the King of Halloween Town, who stumbles through a portal to Christmas Town and decides to celebrate the holiday. The film originated in a poem written by Burton in 1982 while he was working as an animator at Walt Disney Feature Animation. The film was met with both critical and financial success, grossing over $76 million during its initial run.

Jesse Dayton’s side gig as Rob Zombie’s favorite film composer BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO

ob Zombie essentially paid for Jesse Dayton’s Austin home. Wondering who Dayton is? If you ever saw Zombie’s 2005 redneck horror film The Devil’s Rejects, chances are you heard alt-country troubadour Dayton’s musical handiwork throughout the movie. Having heard one of the singer-songwriter’s records at a party, Zombie tracked Dayton, which caught the latter completely off guard. “That was a total weird fluke, man. One of my childhood friends is an incredible actor named Lou Temple. Lou had been in some of Rob’s movies and worked with him. Lou gave Rob my number, he called me

Jesse Dayton and said he was making the ultimate white trash horror movie called The Devil’s Rejects. He thought my music would be perfect, which is kind of like a left-handed compliment. It’s

REAL ESTATE NEWS

The Changing Market

Experts teach Hofstra students project development strategies

A

s real estate challenges continue to escalate on Long Island, the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University is offering a new, intensive course that will provide students with the skills to navigate and shape the future of Long Island real estate development. Offered through Hofstra Law’s Wilbur F. Breslin Center for Real Estate Studies and in partnership with the Long Island Real Estate Group (LIREG), the interdisciplinary course will expose law and business students to every aspect of a real estate development project, from concept to construction. “Hofstra’s continued dedication to the success of their students accompanied by LIREG’s goal of bolstering the next generation of Long Island real estate professionals has led to this strong and exciting partnership,” said Alison Brennan, a LIREG board member and chief executive officer of Einbinder Development. A recent study released by Nassau

County Comptroller Jack Schnirman revealed that corrective action must be immediately taken to keep millennials, who are currently leaving in droves, on Long Island. Two key steps for solving this problem is updating zoning codes and developing affordable housing options.

“By providing students with an indepth, practical understanding of how to navigate each phase of a real estate project, they will be able to graduate law school with the tools needed to thrive in the real estate industry and confront the major real estate issues in the area,” said professor Ashira Pelman Ostrow, executive director of the Breslin Center. Each of the 14 class sessions will focus on a different aspect of real estate development and be taught by a variety of industry expert lecturers, including developers, bankers, lenders and title experts. Topics to be discussed are feasibility studies, zoning and approvals, negotiating the contract of sale, title search, environmental review, product design, construction and finance, leasing, brokerage/marketing, property management, and condo/co-op residential housing. On Sept. 18, the students visited two communities developed and

constructed by Engel Burman, based in Garden City. The first site is designed to address the shortage of rental housing for young people and seniors on Long Island. This site will include two different communities: one for 55+ active adults and the other designed specifically for students and young people entering the local workforce. The second site consists of two communities as well, in Jericho that address senior living. “Real estate development on Long Island has always been inherently complicated due to fragmented politics and antiquated zoning codes. We’re finding that development is becoming increasingly difficult over time here,” explained Scott Burman, Partner at The Engel Burman Group. “Our collaboration with Hofstra Law is extremely exciting and I look forward participating by educating the next generation of professionals about the intricacies of real estate.” —Submitted by Hofstra University

Plan Now For Spring Florals JOHN SPAGNOLI

F

editorial@antonmediagroup.com

all is a great time for planning your spring colors. It is the time to purchase bulbs of every kind from daffodils to tulips. There are countless varieties of bulbs to grow. I will cover a few of them. Hopefully, I can excite you to grow even more bulbs. Bulbs properly planted in the fall will grow roots preparing for a spring bloom. Bulb in zone 7 Long Island need to be planted four to six weeks before frost. I once purchased tulip bulbs on sale late in the year. My bulbs planted in late November early December never grew properly. I don’t recall even having flowers or growing at all. Timing is everything with bulbs. Plant iris bearded varieties in the fall as they grow in full and partial sun. Fall planting allows for roots to grow and helps the iris adjust to its surrounding so it can bloom in spring. Irises originated in a number of places. There is a wide distribution from Europe, Middle East, Northern Africa, Asia and North America.

I love crocuses, one of the first flowers to bloom and they come back year after year. Saffron crocuses bloom in the fall and you can pick the stamens and dry for saffron you buy in the store. You can plant crocuses in your lawn for a brilliant display. Crocuses are fool proof with very easy growing. The bulbs should be planted in full sun or partial shade. Plant the bulbs several inches deep. You can plant under a tree since when the crocuses grow there are no leaves yet. Crocuses are happy cramps next to another plant. An early crocus flower attracts bees in March. A beautiful flower for the start of warmer spring weather. Snowdrops are one of the first of all spring flowers to appear. A single

white flower blooms from February and March. These plants grow three to six inches often poking through the snow. Daffodils are native to Europe, northern parts of Africa and western parts of Asia and Mediterranean. Daffodils grow in meadows and forests. My dad planted hundreds of daffodil bulbs that bloomed beautifully for years. The secret is to let the leaves die back as the leaves replenish the bulbs. But don’t forget where you planted the bulbs. Daffodil requires partial to full sun. Full sun is recommended, if possible. Daffodils are able to grow through snow with no problems. Daffodils are a symbol of hope today. In the past, Daffodils was a symbol of chivalry.

When you think of spring often the image is of a tulip flower. Tulips have been popular for years, hundreds of years. In the 1600s, a tulip was worth a person’s yearly salary or their house. The very strange coloration of the tulip was from a virus. Tulips are native to Central Asia. The largest producers’ of bulbs is the Netherlands. Fall is an exciting time of year, but so is planning for the spring with countless bulbs. As the snow starts to melt spring flower bloom declaring the near end of winter. A fresh new start for the year.

ADVICE

Dear O.P.M., I can understand that a mom will always be concerned and worried about her children. However, you need to take a different approach. You are dealing with adult men. It is you that needs to control your actions. You need to realize that your sons do not want to feel like you are treating them like children. You need to cut back on the texting and calling and they will respect your concern in a much better way. Let your sons know that what you do is not due to anything that they are doing, but to your own way of handling

THE ANNOYING MOM Michelle Weinberger things, which you are going to work on. Let them know that you were not happy with how you made them feel. Not only will they appreciate you saying that, but you are showing them that it’s never to late to learn. Realize that you raised intelligent young men who will do the right thing. Now take a deep breath and start working on making some changes. .............. Hi Michelle, I am at my wits end with my daughter. She is 24 years old and still lives at home. She has a bachelor’s degree in science and a master’s degree. She’s a good kid and never gives us a problem. But when she dresses to go out on the weekends with her friends, my husband and I think she dresses inappropriately. She keeps herself in great shape, but sometimes her outfits are just too sexy. Whenever I or my husband (her dad)

say something, her answer to us is “I’m 24, I know how to dress,” or “This is how all my friends dress, this is the style.” I could use some advise on how to handle this situation. Thank you and help! Dear H.E.L.P., I’m sure that yes, your daughter does know how to dress as she says. But, you can have a one-on-one talk with her about how dressing too provocative or too sexy can send off the wrong signals. Let her know that she always looks beautiful and you are so proud of her in more ways than one. As far as the dressing goes, let her know that

she can still look beautiful and sexy without having to flaunt her body, and to always conduct herself as a lady with elegance and class. ..............

Hi Michelle, I am a mom of three adult sons, ages ranging from 29 to 36. I still worry about them the same way I did when they were younger. I text them frequently, especially on the weekends. My two oldest boys get very angry with me, however, the youngest tolerates it. When I tell them to drive safely I get an answer like, “Mom, really? No, I’m not going to drive safely.” Then I get an eye roll. They get really annoyed when I get overprotective. I guess being that I always was overprotective, it kind of irritates them now. Please, some advice to help fix this problem. Sincerely, Overprotective Mom

here are plenty of TV shows with lackluster finales. Seinfeld threw its main characters in jail, How I Met Your Mother contorted its way into disappointment and criticizing Game of Thrones became a cultural rallying point just a few months ago. But Breaking Bad was never one of those shows. Its final half-season is legendary for its quality, and its sendoff episode “Felina” is widely regarded as one of the medium’s finest swan songs. Following up on a beloved ending like is in some ways a tougher task than retconning a whimper of a final episode. But it’s a task series creator Vince Gilligan and the rest of the people behind El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, the Netflix-exclusive feature-length

sequel to the acclaimed TV drama, were well qualified to accomplish. El Camino follows fan-favorite character Jesse Pinkman, who was last seen speeding away from a gaggle of dead neonazis in the titular vehicle, as he struggles to escape his past in both a metaphorical and a very literal sense. True to the show’s reputation as a visual novel, El Camino picks up right where Pinkman’s story left off in “Felina.” The film takes periodic detours through parts of his past we haven’t yet seen to help illuminate some of the decisions we see him make, but mostly the movie plays like a two-hour Breaking Bad episode. That has a mixed effect on the quality of the product here. Breaking Bad was always known for its pacing, but it seems like Gilligan and company used the extra runtime as an excuse to tell their story a

little more loosely. The hyper focus the film puts on Pinkman’s immediate attempts to leave Albuquerque keeps the tension high throughout, and at most times El Camino feels more like a thriller than a straight-up drama, but the movie could have probably been boiled down

to two episodes of the show. It’s not that any of that extra content is bad, it’s just not as lean a cut as viewers are used to. As anyone could have guessed, Aaron Paul’s return to his most famous role is the highlight here. For some actors (Jesse Plemons’ coldly sociopathic Todd Alquist in particular) the five-year gap following left them looking a little too plump and wrinkled, but what changes Paul underwent are used to great advantage. The Jessie in El Camino is damaged and traumatized, reeling from a year of life in a cage, and the changes in Paul’s face and performance make you feel that pain. By the end of the two hours, some of old Jessie returns, but like one character says at the outset, putting things completely right is “the one thing you can never do.” The old Jessie is gone for good. Overall, El Camino delivers mostly the same high fans have come to expect. The film presents compelling new characters, fleshes out beloved series mainstays and provides plenty of twists to make the ride exciting. Jessie’s arc continues in a way that fits the show’s logic, with plenty of openings left for future projects should Gilligan choose to keep the story going.

et ready to cruise down the Long Island Expressway or the pot holefilled Northern State Parkway during the grueling winter months. Slippery roads with black ice will appear sooner rather than later, and you need to have an automobile that suits the needs of New York’s treacherous highways. The BMW X5 is exactly what one needs to get by the rough winter without worrying about how many hours you’ll spend at the mechanic trying to repair the damage from the poor road conditions. Just by driving through the Town of Oyster Bay, the X5’s smooth ride is largely thanks to the hefty build. Its 5,000plus pounds make it perfect to drive, and you’ll barely feel the largest bumps in the road throughout the region.

BMW X5 from page 17A “You’ll have fun with it,” Zehan Joshi, a member of the BMW of Oyster Bay Genius team, said. “This car goes through snow like it’s absolutely nothing. It goes through rain like it’s absolutely nothing. It’s meant for extreme conditions.” In 2019, BMW redesigned the X5, completely revamping one of its most popular machines. Munich opted to give the X5 a sportier look and, most of all, a fresh engine. The 2020 X5 is one of the most durable vehicles BMW has produced. Its three models—the sDrive40i, xDrive40i and the xDrive50i vary from 335 horsepower to 456 horsepower—making it one of the most powerful family-oriented vehicles on the road. “What stands out to me is it’s luxury and sportiness, like every single thing BMW stands for,” Joshi said. “It’s one of those cars that you can put your entire family in it, and at the same time, like if you need to merge on a highway or get somewhere quick, you can do it with five people in the car.”

The sportier M-tuned version of the 2020 X5 M, as well as the X6 M, feature a twin-turbocharged S63 V8 engine, generating more than 520 horsepower. That’s a whole lot of muscle. When BMW unveiled the 2019 version of the X5, the engine was so powerful that Toyota is utilizing it for the all-new Supra. “All of the manufacturers are trying to make something sporty like what BMW has,” Joshi said. The X5 also features BMW’s state-of-the-art technology. Worried about getting pulled over for speeding in this bullet? Don’t worry, because the speed limit actually pops up on your windshield. And no, it’s not a distraction, either, due to its perfect placing. It also has everything

from Apple CarPlay, blind-spot detection, frontal collision warning, lane department warning and all of the basic safety features that BMW offers. To top it off, this machine has a spacious center console, perfectly designed to have plenty of space to store extra items you have in your pockets, coffee and anything else that you need to leave in your ride. “They focused a lot on the interior with the materials that a lot of the other brands have,” Joshi said. “There really is no short comings and there’s no reason to get another car. Everything you need in a car is right here with the X5.” The 2020 X5 will get up to 21 miles per gallon in the city, and 26 miles per gallon on the highway. As per usual, the X5 continues to lead the way for the rest of the BMW fleet. “The X5 was the first to have the state-of-the-art technology,” Joshi said. “The X5 is the one that originally came out with all of this technology. It was widely-anticipated, and it still is. They keep going with it because the car speaks for itself.”

Spike In Finance Costs Drives Increase

I

t’s going to cost more for those looking to buy a new car this year. Finance costs on new car purchases have jumped 24 percent in 2019, according to new AAA research, pushing the average annual cost of vehicle ownership to $9,282, or $773.50 a month. That’s the highest cost associated with new vehicle ownership since AAA began tracking expenses in 1950 and a reminder that the true costs of owning a vehicle extend far beyond maintenance and fuel. “Finance costs accounted for more than 40 percent of the total increase in average vehicle ownership costs,” said John Nielsen, AAA’s managing director for Automotive Engineering & Repair. “AAA found finance charges rose more sharply in the last 12 months than any major expense associated with owning a vehicle.” The spike in finance charges, which rose from $744 to $920, a nearly $200 increase, was fueled by rising federal interest rates and higher vehicle prices. It comes as 72-month

car loans have become increasingly common, meaning car buyers are paying more, and longer, for vehicles that lose value the moment they’re sold. Long-term loans offer lower monthly car payments, but they ultimately cost the consumer more. AAA found that, on average, every 12 months added to the life of a loan adds nearly $1,000 in total finance charges. “Smaller monthly payments may be tempting to potential buyers, but they can add big costs in the long run,” Nielsen said. The new figures come from Your Driving Costs, which reviews nine categories of vehicles— consisting of 45 models—to determine the average annual operating and ownership costs of each. AAA focuses on

top-selling, mid-priced models and compares them across six expense categories: fuel prices; maintenance/ repair/tire costs; insurance rates; license/registration/taxes; depreciation; and finance charges. Annual average costs increased in each category. Of all costs, depreciation, a measure of how quickly a car loses value, remains the single biggest cost of ownership, accounting for more than a third (36 percent) of the average annual cost. It slowed

a bit this year, with vehicles included in the study losing an average of $3,334 a year, up $45 from last year. In 2018, depreciation rose by $117 or 3.7 percent. In two vehicle classes this year—small and medium sedans—depreciation costs actually declined. —Submitted by AAA

Registration for 2nd NSPC Health Science Competition Opens (Rockville Centre, NY – October 16, 2019) Registration for the second Neurological Surgery P.C. Health Science Competition (NSPC HSC), a program of the Center for Science Teaching & Learning (CSTL), is now open at www. cstl.org/nspc. Last year the competition drew teams from 38 Long Island high schools and 50 prize winners shared $80,000 in score-based awards. Created to foster interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programs, applications for the 2020 competition must be received by no later than 12:00 p.m. (EST) on April 30, 2020. A $25 non-refundable registration fee per team applies to all entries. The NSPC HSC is available exclusively to Nassau and Suffolk County high school student teams, the competition’s finals will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 2020. Health and science careers are in high demand. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that healthcare related occupations are expected to generate 2.3 million new jobs through 2024, representing faster employment growth than any other industry. “As leaders in the medical profession,” notes Michael H. Brisman, M.D., an attending neurosurgeon and chief

executive officer of Neurological Surgery, P.C. (NSPC), “we must focus on inspiring and motivating young people to take interest in STEM education and pursue careers in health and science. This is especially important with the high demand for healthcare and medical science positions, locally and nationally.” Student teams will be judged in one of five categories: Behavioral Sciences; Biology – Medicine/Health; Biology – Microbiology/Genetics; Health Related Biochemistry/ Biophysics, and Bioengineering and Computational Biology. The five first place winners in last year’s competition were: Feyi Rufai of Roslyn High School in the “Behavioral Sciences” category, Alessi Demir of Manhasset High School in the “Biology – Medicine/Health” category, Michael Lawes of Elmont Memorial High School in the “Biology – Microbiology/ Genetics” category, Jason Schmitt of Lynbrook Senior High School in the “Health Related Biochemistry & Biophysics” category, and Christopher Lu of John L. Miller Great Neck North High School in the “Bioengineering and Computational Biology” category. Each winner received a $5,500 prize. The exact breakdown of prizes can be found at www.cstl.org/nspc/hsc-prizes/.

“The young people who were part of the first competition,” observes Dr. Brisman, “were brilliant and inspiring. Their understanding of medicine and health-related subjects was impressive. These students are exactly what we need to address the high demand to STEM, health science, and healthcare-related jobs here on Long Island and across the nation. The first NSPC Health Science Competition exceeded our goals in terms of the number of schools and students who competed. I believe the 2020 competition will further motivate both those who participate and others, who observed these innovative young people, to pursue their interest and careers in healthcare and related sciences.” For more information about the NSPC Health Science Competition (NSPC HSC), competition rules, and deadlines, please visit www.cstl. org/nspc or call (516) 764-0045.

e are now in the midst of cold and flu season. While our immune system works very hard to defend our bodies from disease-causing microorganisms, there are simple steps that we can take to help. Washing your hands is crucial to helping ward off the flu, but strengthening your immune system really starts with choosing to follow a healthy lifestyle year-round. Exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol, and getting adequate sleep are vital for promoting immunity. In terms of diet, there are several vitamins and minerals that are known to help support the immune system. Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and zinc are commonly known for their immune-boosting properties. A well-balanced diet should provide all of these nutrients in adequate amounts. However, there are a few special foods that can help nourish the body and fuel your immunity this season:

ADVICE Dear Lisa Dear Lisa, I am tired of yo-yo dieting and I recently heard about Intuitive Eating. What is it and is it an alternative to dieting? Hi Brittany, You mentioned the term yo-yo dieting, which is a common phrase used by those who repeatedly lose weight by dieting followed by gaining weight when falling off of the diet wagon. The cycle continues until we change the way we view food and its true purpose in our lives. Intuitive Eating is a wonderful and healthy alternative to dieting and involves making food choices based on hunger, satiety and pleasure without experiencing feelings of guilt related to food rules and various self-defeating thoughts and beliefs. Intuitive Eating aides in healing your mind and body from the effects of dieting. We view it as a mind-body approach to health by listening and responding to the messages of your body in order to meet your own individual physical and psychological needs. Learning to feed your body when it is telling you it is hungry is freeing. Intuitive Eating is a

Lisa Brown-Eisel way to connect with your body’s natural hunger and fullness signals while letting go of the guiltiness associated with food choices. Dieting promotes restriction, weight and body image focus and risks to one’s health. Some of the repercussions being a lack of trust in your body, the yo-yo dieting that you

ADVERTORIAL Fighting Alongside Our Patients At New York Breast Health (NYBH), we know that the most important thing to someone dealing with cancer is being in the best hands right away. It’s no surprise that patients from all over seek out acclaimed, surgicallytrained oncologist Dwight De Risi, MD, for his three decades of dedicated care. De Risi uses the latest approaches, such as a unique Marginal Biopsy Technique to radically reduce the need for any additional surgery. He also understands that his skill at removing any malignant tissue is only part of the equation. “It’s important that we not only treat the cancer, but also that women feel confident about their cosmetic outcome,” De Risi said. Precision Radiation Treatment The NYBH facilities are equipped with high-precision technology and a team of skilled radiation oncologists led by Shawn Zimberg, MD, Director of Radiation Oncology. Zimberg recognizes that every patient’s situation is unique, as is where they are in their journey. “Radiation is typically used after lumpectomy to remove any stray cells in the breast and reduce the need for any additional surgery,” he said. “Oftentimes even after mastectomy, we use radiation to prevent the recurrence of cancer in patients. By doing this we can save lives.” Targeted Medical Therapy Yelda Nouri, MD, a gifted medical oncologist and mother of a school-aged child, understands the challenges that some may face when integrating chemotherapy into their lives. She keeps in mind that today most cancers can be cured. NYBH provides the weaponry to do so, offering several breast cancer clinical trials as well as the latest medications for eradicating specific cancers, such as immunotherapy for triple-negative breast cancer. “This recently FDA-approved treatment augments a patient’s immune system to help fight cancer,” said Nouri. She views this new approach as a game changer that is already saving lives. “Today, most breast cancers can potentially be cured,” she said, adding that even in metastatic cases some patients are continuing to thrive for a decade or more. mentioned and an array of eating disorders. If you are eating intuitively then you are choosing to eat foods that you enjoy, those that are satisfying and filling. Interestingly enough, as you are learning to trust your body the temptation to overeat lessens, the health risks lessen and so does the cycle of weight gain and weight loss and all of the feelings that come along with it. One of the requirements of eating intuitively is to learn to distinguish between physical hunger and psychological/ emotional hunger. Physical hunger would be the hunger pains we feel because our stomach is empty, we feel the rumbling sounds, some people experience irritability and lack of energy. Psychological or emotional hunger might consist of times where we are eating, stuffing, escaping from our feelings and not dealing

with them appropriately. Emotional eating is very common, food can be thought of as anesthetizing in the moment but there are many negative consequences as a result of emotional eating. Just a few are weight gain, high blood pressure, diabetes and fatigue. There are 10 Principals of Intuitive Eating that were created by two dieticians, Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch in 1995. They co-authored the book, Intuitive Eating, which explains the philosophy and worth checking out. The most state-of-the-art facelift today is a hybrid technique that I created called the MADE Lift. It fuses the optimal features of oldergeneration, short-incision “mini” facelifts with a deep plane facelift. Deep plane facelifts do not lift or pull the skin but lift the face from under the muscle layer so that the face appears soft and smooth. Hybrid facelifts yield superior, natural looking results with minimal scarring and a shorter recovery time with an average recovery of 7 to 10 days. in addition, this lift restores lost volume to the cheekbones and smooths the nasolabial folds, resulting in a youthful, beautiful, heart-shaped face eliminating the need for facial filler injections. My Hybrid lift uses a short incision, often called an S-type incision that is hidden behind the ears. It lifts the facial tissue and muscles simultaneously. This technique creates a softer look unlike those of a traditional mini lift that peel back the skin and stretch it creating a tight or pulled look. Because of the muscle repair, the results of my hybrid facelifts last longer. The standard lifetime of a “mini lift” is between three to five years, but my newer hybrid facelifts typically last 10 to 12 years. Just like a “mini facelift”, hybrid facelifts can be performed

Meet ROSA: A New Innovation In Pediatric Epilepsy Treatment Cohen Children’s Medical Center is the first on Long Island to use the seizure-fighting robot There are nearly 500,000 children in the U.S. living with the seizure disorder known as epilepsy. For many pediatric epilepsy patients, medication or diet can control or eliminate seizures. For others, surgical intervention may be necessary. As a leader in epilepsy and neurosurgery, Cohen Children’s Medical Center is the first pediatric program on Long Island to use ROSA—a new robotic operating surgical assistant that makes epilepsy and other pediatric neurosurgery procedures more precise and safe. ROSA the robot is giving pediatric epilepsy patients at Cohen Children’s an easier path to treatment.

accurately detect and characterize seizure activity. Once the electrodes are in place, patients are monitored for seizure activity, and Cohen Children’s surgeons use the data collected to create a more targeted treatment plan. Cohen Children’s is one of the New York metropolitan area’s largest providers of pediatric neurosurgery.

WHAT IS ROSA AND HOW IS IT DIFFERENT? ROSA uses a robotic arm that is able to target suspected areas of seizure activity through small incisions in the skull. This minimally invasive approach eliminates the need to open the skull to pinpoint seizures. With ROSA’s assistance, surgeons can get the same results, while reducing the risk of infection and strain on the patient. A PRECISE PATHWAY ROSA uses a powerful navigation system and a robotic arm that provides exceptional dexterity and control of movement. It has surgical planning software that allows surgeons to download preoperative imaging scans and create accurate 3D maps of the brain. During the procedure, the robotic arm can be fitted with various instruments and guided to precise points in the brain. Thin wires, known as depth electrodes, are then placed into the brain to more

Reduces pain and bleeding for quicker healing Increases access to the surgical area due to the robotic arm that mimics human arm movements Provides precise instrument guidance through the robot arm’s high dexterity Reduces operating time due to increased efficiencies, particularly with placement of multiple electrodes for SEEG Eliminates need to remove a portion of the skull

ROSA WEARS MANY HATS In addition to monitoring pediatric epilepsy, Cohen Children’s uses ROSA to support many neurosurgical procedures, including stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG), thermal ablation of seizure foci or tumors, deep brain stimulation (DBS) and surgical treatment of movement disorders. It can also be used for a variety of minimally invasive neurological procedures, including laser ablation, responsive neurostimulation (RNS) electrode placement, biopsy and endoscopy.

Vivo Health Pharmacy Receives ACHC Accreditation

ivo Health Pharmacy, a specialty pharmacy that provides services at several Northwell Health hospitals and ambulatory facilities, has been recognized for its quality of patient care. Vivo Health Specialty Pharmacy and Vivo Health Pharmacy received accreditation by demonstrating compliance to national standards through the Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC), a nonprofit organization that has stood as a symbol of quality and excellence since 1986. Vivo Health Pharmacy also received ACHC’s distinction in Oncology, one of only 14 pharmacies to receive this distinction in the country. “Accreditation by ACHC demonstrates our organization’s dedication to meeting standards that facilitate a higher level of patient care and performance,” said Onisis Stefas, PharmD, Northwell’s chief pharmacy officer. “This commitment aligns

with our values as an organization. A distinction in Oncology differentiates the clinical services we provide from many of our peers. We are proud of the accomplishments of our team and to be considered part of this elite group.” In 2017, Vivo Health Pharmacy also received the Utilization Review Accreditation Commission Specialty Pharmacy accreditation, a designation bestowed to less than one percent of all pharmacies in the United States. Vivo Health operates pharmacies at nine Northwell locations in New York. They also operate a 15,000-squarefoot fulfillment facility at 225 Community Drive in Great Neck filling an estimated 700 prescriptions per day with custom software, productivity workflows, smart shipping solutions and two pharmacy robots capable of automatically and accurately preparing more than 340 types of medication.

The Implant Center at ProHEALTH Dental Creating Smiles and Changing Lives The Implant Center at ProHEALTH Dental in Lake Success is one of the most comprehensive centers on Long Island. What sets us apart is our team of specialists, Dr. Neil Karnofsky (Periodontist & Implant Surgeon) and Dr. Bruce Valauri (Prosthodontist) working together hand-in-hand under the same roof in our state-of-the-art facility. The value of having over 50 years of combined experience in placing and restoring implants is unparalleled. Missing teeth can not only make smiling embarrassing and eating a challenge, missing and periodontally compromised teeth may contribute to serious health issues from digestive problems to an increased risk for diabetes, Alzheimer’s, as well as heart and kidney disease. Dental implants are the preferred choice for tooth replacement. Dental implants replace the root of your tooth with a titanium post, providing the necessary foundation for a single tooth or entire full smile. In certain circumstances we can place the implants and teeth on the same day. The appearance, function, and feel are like natural teeth. This is a great alternative to dentures, bridges, and crowns- implant supported restorations don’t slip or move and can last a lifetime when properly maintained.

Our experienced implant team has performed numerous cases together. In other offices, your implants are being placed in one location and restored in another. Not at ProHEALTH Dental, our team consults with each patient, reviews all the diagnostic information and collaboratively designs a custom treatment plan (utilizing current digital technology) and routinely work side by side to efficiently deliver the agreed upon care. If you are considering implant-supported restorations, we invite you to take advantage of our free consultation. We can assist you in creating a customized treatment plan and answer any questions you may have. It’s important to us that you feel comfortable throughout the dental implant process and make the right decision for you. While costs vary according to your personalized treatment plan—and will be provided during your consultation—we also offer several convenient financing options. For that reason, we provide a dedicated Treatment Coordinator to help you throughout the entire process.

Cancer Institute Receives Quality Certification

orthwell Health Cancer Institute locations at Monter Cancer Center, Northwell Cancer Institute at Huntington, Imbert Cancer Center in Bay Shore and Northwell Health Cancer Institute at Phelps Hospital in Sleepy Hollow have each received certification from the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative Program, LLC (QOPI), an affiliate of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Inc. (ASCO). The QOPI certification is valid for three years and signifies Northwell’s oncology practices meet nationally-recognized standards for quality cancer care. QOPI is a voluntary self-assessment and improvement program to help hematology-oncology and medical oncology practices assess the quality of the care they provide to patients. About 300 practices nationwide are currently certified. “We’re extremely proud to receive this certification from the ASCO’s QOPI Certification Program,” said Tony Philip, MD, director of quality and patient safety at Northwell Health Cancer Institute. “This recognition highlights our commitment to delivering outstanding cancer care to our patients across the region. Earning the certification took tremendous teamwork among our nurses, pharmacists, physicians and administrative leadership.” The QOPI Certification Program for outpatient oncology practices is the first program of its kind for oncology in the nation. The seal designates those practices that successfully meet the standards and objectives of the program, which includes scoring above threshold on the key QOPI quality measures and meeting chemotherapy safety standards established by ASCO and the Oncology Nursing Society. QOPI analyzes individual practice data and compares these to more than 170 evidence-based and consensus quality measures. To become certified, practices have to meet core standards in areas of treatment, including creating a safe environment—staffing, competencies, and general policy; treatment planning, patient consent, and education; ordering, preparing, dispensing, and administering chemotherapy; monitoring after chemotherapy is administered, including adherence, toxicity, and complications; treatment planning; staff training and education; chemotherapy orders and drug preparation; patient consent and education; safe chemotherapy administration and monitoring and assessment of patient well-being. —Submitted by Northwell Health

Medicinal Plants BY JOHN SPAGNOLI editorial@antonmediagroup.com

In the past, people have used certain plants that are actually harmful. Several hundred years ago people were eating tomato plants, which we now know to be poisonous. Tomato plants are in the nightshade family and were also grown as an ornamental plant. But as for medicinal plants, let’s leave that to the professionals. Walking through your nearest health food store or pharmacy, you will find yourself lost in a sea of supplements. Supplements are mainly used for weight loss, improved energy or even to increase brain function. Personally, I would check with your doctor to make sure it can be used with current medications. But thousands of plants have been used for medicinal purposes, so let’s take a look at a few. Ginkgo biloba These trees have grown for thousands of years in China. Ginkgo leaves are used to help aid many ailments, including brain function, depression, anxiety and improved heart health. These are the claims that the FDA, Food and Drug administration states have not been evaluated. Gingko has strong antioxidants that help keep your cells healthy, possibly helping to prevent cancers and other health issues. Echinacea This coneflower helps the immune system and protects the body. It can be used to help prevent or help with

colds, but remember to check your label on all medications or supplements. Do not take if pregnant, lactating or have an autoimmune conditions. Chrysanthemum Chrysanthemum flower tea is used for your well-being. It is great for seasonal allergies and the tea can help improve visual acuity. Chrysanthemum is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Using chrysanthemum for those with lighter skin tones can increase photosensitivity. New England Aster This plant was used by Native Americans as Aster tea was used to treat earaches, relieve gas pains, stomach aches and fevers. It was also found to be useful for colds and for asthma. Aster plants/ roots contain many minerals and vitamins. Goldenrod Goldenrod has many medicinal uses like healing wounds. It is also a diuretic that helps the kidney prevent kidney stones. It is also suggested that it helps reduce inflammation of muscles. Goldenrod has been used for a number of aliments from everything from diabetes to asthma. Medicinal plants from around the world in ancient to modern times have been used. Before the advent of modern medicine, plants were used to treat many different aliments. As always, check with your doctor if unsure about the usage, be aware of side effects on medications you are currently taking.

Brain Aneurysm Walk Raises $100,000

pproximately 1,000 walkers helped raise $100,000 during Long Island’s 11th annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Walk at Jones Beach State Park, hosted by Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center and the Brain Aneurysm Foundation. Survivors and their families, along with those who lost a loved one, attended the September 21 event, which has raised nearly $800,000 since its inception. Proceeds from the walk will support essential research at the two organizations. “This year’s walk was extra special,” said David J. Chalif, MD, chief of neurosurgery at Southside Hospital and director of Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center. “While our guest speakers in the past were brain aneurysm survivors, we were touched this year to have as one of our guest speakers Greg McGeady, who lost his older brother to a ruptured brain aneurysm. Hearing Mr. McGeady’s story brought many of us to tears. It was a reminder to all of us that while there are many who are brain

aneurysm survivors, about 30 percent of cases with a ruptured aneurysm are fatal.” McGeady, 34, of Clifton Park, was joined on stage by brain aneurysm survivors Luisina Alonzo, 22, of Bellerose, Queens, and Cynthia Mathis, 40, of New Hyde Park, who each shared their stories.

Walk participants were reminded of the warning signs of a brain aneurysm: severe headache, nausea, blurred or double vision, stiff neck or neck pain, pain above or behind the eye and loss of sensation. —Submitted by Northwell Health

Cancer Institute Receives Massive Grant

An impressive $4.6 million has been awarded to the prestigious program The Institute of Cancer Research at The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research has been awarded a five-year, $4.6 million National Cancer Institute (NCI) Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) grant. Northwell Health’s Feinstein Institutes was one of only 32 institutions nationwide to receive funding from this program—and Northwell’s Cancer Institute was the only center in the tri-state area to participate. “This significant NCI grant will help Northwell’s Cancer Institute to initiate new research clinical trials for our cancer patients and those seeking cutting-edge care in their community,” said Vincent Vinciguera, MD, professor of the Institute of Cancer Research at the Feinstein Institutes and professor of Medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine. “Our goals for this grant, which extends to 2023, are to increase the diversity and inclusion of underrepresented populations in our clinical trials. Our focus will include outreach to Latino communities in Nassau County and Queens and to recruit patients into relevant clinical trials.” NCORP is a national network of investigators, cancer care providers, academic institutions and other organizations that brings cancer clinical trials and cancer care delivery studies to people in their communities. The grants are designed to

WORD FIND

30A OCTOBER 23 - 29, 2019 • ANTON MEDIA GROUP

INTERNATIONAL WORD FIND At the mall

ARIES (March 21-April 19). Making friends with your body is your top priority now, as you’ll be asking it to do a lot for you this week. All the things that seemed tedious when you were younger, from stretching to eating your vegetables, will keep you in good stead. Prevention is no fun to think about, and yet it’s what allows for some big fun in the future. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). People often mistake knowledge for intelligence. It’s not what you know that makes you smart; it’s that you want to know. This week, you want to know what motivates people to do what they do. Understanding what moves people will help you both serve and lead them, often at the same time. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You will finish what you start. You’ve been ambitious, which makes it a little harder. But no matter, that just means it will take longer. Maybe there’s no one else to notice or hold you accountable. Still, you’ll finish. You’ll finish because it matters to you to keep your word, even if you’re only keeping it to yourself. CANCER (June 22-July 22). We all spring from primordial sea creatures. At some deep level, the water is home. It’s your element, so you’re more in touch with the healing, cleansing, joy-inducing aspects of water ingestion, immersion and general sensation, which will have a direct correlation to your well-being this week. Ride the wave! LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You may not be the figurehead of your crew this week, but you’ll be the leader nonetheless. You’ll influence from the inside, likely from a humble place, which you don’t mind inhabiting. This is a sign of true confidence. You’ll lead by example and through the subtle introduction of ideas that wouldn’t otherwise be considered. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Suffering is caused by emotional reactivity. We have a bad feeling about what happened because we’ve interpreted it in a certain way. Take the same impulse, interpret it differently, and have a different feeling. This is the simple way to take hold of your experience of life and steer it in the direction of your preferred feelings. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Your body knows how to do things you don’t have to think about. No one had to teach you how to be born or how to eat, and no one has to teach you to run, dance and love. This week your mind is a little over-vigilant about your safety and comfort. Don’t let your mind interfere with your body’s natural intelligence. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). There are some things you just have to experience for yourself. You could be told it. AROUND NASSAU

Checking In With Laura Curran

BY JENNIFER FAUCI

jfauci@antonmediagroup.com

As we prepare to close out 2019, we chatted with Nassau County Executive Laura Curran about her accomplishments in office thus far.

Q A

What have you been up to as far as plans for Nassau County? Across the county, we’re focusing on revitalizing our downtowns and promoting transit-oriented development. Farmingdale, Great Neck Plaza, Hicksville, Mineola, Rockville Centre and Westbury have focused on developing transit-oriented housing and retail options in vibrant, walkable downtowns. With greater building density where it makes sense and proximity to Long Island Rail Road stations for easy commutes, apartments are rapidly filling up, some with waiting lists.

We are on our way to creating a dynamic constellation of mixed-use, transit-oriented neighborhoods connecting communities from Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens with the rest of the Long Island region. But there is more work that still needs to be done.

Q A

What can you speak to regarding property assessments and taxes? When I sought this office, I was determined to finally fix our corrupted, broken property assessment system. We cannot invest in a successful future “live, work, play” suburban environment if we continue to spend taxpayer dollars to deal with yesterday’s messes. When our homeowners pay town, school, special district, and county taxes, they deserve some assurance that the amounts they are paying are fair and equitable. But our

broken assessment system, frozen by the Mangano Administration for eight years, guaranteed the opposite. A vicious cycle of grossly inaccurate assessments, causing taxpayers to grieve— especially commercial property owners—resulted in refunds that were bankrupting the County, depriving it of vital dollars to deliver services and make essential investments—like paving our pothole-ridden roads. My administration put a stop to it with the first countywide reassessment in nearly a

Can you speak to issues of corruption? I came into office and immediately signed executive orders banning county employees from receiving gifts from county vendors or from holding party leadership positions. We removed an anti-competitive fee for those seeking to do business with Nassau, so that county

Q A

What about transparency across government? We’ve brought transparency to county finances with Open Checkbook, Open Budget, and Open Payroll. We’ve also launched a firstof-its-kind partnership with a leading risk and compliance firm to streamline due diligence research on vendors. At no cost to taxpayers, Nassau is the first municipality in the nation to utilize artificial intelligence technology to vet its vendors. I’m now proposing a bill that takes us even further: posting of elected officials’ financial and ethics disclosure forms online for everyone to see.

How are you working to fix the infrastructure? At my direction, DPW put an aggressive plan together to get Nassau’s roads back in top-notch condition. By the end of 2019, DPW will repave an unprecedented 200 lane miles of county roads which more than doubles the number of roads paved in 2018 and is a 177 percent increase since 2017.

It’s a project Dayton is rightfully proud of. “It’s on Amazon Prime and we actually sold the damn thing and it got picked up. It’s got a cult following and it’s a Corman-esque creature feature,” he said. “I figured that would be the best thing to direct so I wouldn’t get that beat up about it, because it’s supposed to be that. The Thing (1982) “My first favorite horror film of all time is John Carpenter’s remake of The Thing with Kurt Russell. I think that’s Carpenter at his highest level. I think it’s so cool because the special effects look real. It’s not all animated [BS]. The Savory Side Of Chocolate There’s the sweet tooth, and then there’s the meat tooth BY STEVE MOSCO

E

very year around this time, you stock your home with as much chocolate as possible because you’re absolutely sure that despite all evidence pointing to the contrary, you’re going to have more trick-ortreaters than ever on Halloween. Well, prepare to be disappointed yet again. The sheer number of children—and no-good teenagers—trolling through neighborhoods in search of candy has been in a steep decline for at least the last decade. More and more parents are opting to take their kids to Halloween parties instead of allowing them to roam up and down darkened streets while miserable commuters speed down side streets as a shortcut to get home from work. So what you’ll inevitably end up with is a surplus of candy that has tragically gone untricked and untreated. So what do you do? Well, if you’re like every other person over the age of 30, you’ll dump all that candy into a shopping bag, take it to your place of work, and drop it all in the communal area because you simply “cannot have all this candy around!” And you do this without considering that maybe your coworkers also don’t want to have all this candy around. You know, obesity is an ever-growing problem in this country, as is diabetes, and yet you thoughtlessly wave a Snickers bar under the noses of random people without thinking twice. Maybe the real monster wasn’t some costumed kid—maybe you were the real monster all along. The point is, we’re all set to be sick

of overly sweet chocolate this month and next. Instead of forcing candy upon coworkers, why don’t you take this opportunity to find out exactly how versatile chocolate can be?

Chocolate Wasn’t Always Sweet

Back when chocolate was known as the “food of the gods” early in its 4,000-year history, ancient Mesoamericans consumed it as a bitter beverage rather than the way we do— as a way-too-sweet concoction loaded with garbage like sprinkles and nougat. Anthropologists have actually found traces of chocolate dating back to the year 1900 B.C., with evidence demonstrating that it was cultivated from the tropical rain forests of Central America, before the cacao beans were roasted and ground into a paste that was mixed with water, vanilla, honey, chili peppers and whatever other spices they had lying around. The result was a frothy drink that brewers believed had aphrodisiac-like affects. I’m guessing the first chocolate-drink brewers were 100 percent men. When Spanish explorer Hernando Cortez (“Cortez the Killer,” swell guy) came to the new world in the 1500s, he observed the popularity of the drink, which by then was being sweetened by the upper class. After a bit of murdering, pillaging and conquering—otherwise known as “exploring”—Cortez took chocolate

Triple Chocolate Beef & Bean Chili

From Saveur.com (search CocoaRubbed Baby Back Ribs), a rack of meaty and fatty pork ribs has a runin with belly-warming spices like cinnamon, allspice, ginger, and mustard powder. But it’s the inclusion of cocoa powder that delivers a depth of flavor that ribs have been missing for all these years. Also from Saveur, try your culinary hand at a triple chocolate beef and bean chili (search Triple Chocolate Beef & Bean Chili on www.saveur.com). Think about it—dark red-brown chili made even more dark and more red-brown with the inclusion of cocoa powder and semisweet chocolate. And on top of that, the recipe calls on you to add a

complex bitterness with a chocolate stout beer to complete the chocolate triumvirate. Meat plays deliciously with chocolate, as its bold robustness is the ideal match for chocolate, which delivers layers of depth to the overall flavor. The fine folks at the Food Network also deliver plenty of ways to make chocolate part of dinner. But perhaps their most interesting suggestion is chocolate fried chicken. alloween is coming and here is a list of authors and their stories which, throughout the decades, have sent readers flying under the covers in sheer fright. Edgar Allan Poe, the father of a modern-day short story, was fascinated with the morbid side of things. A brilliant man who died at an early age, Poe seemed to have a premonition of his tragic end. His most famous tales are harrowing stories of people who literally cannot escape the grim fate that would be the author’s own. “Berenice” (1835) is the story of a man obsessed with his late wife’s

teeth. He digs up her grave to retrieve them. While caught up in his quest, the husband fails to hear the screams of his wife, a woman who had been accidentally buried alive. On it went. Both “The Fall of the House of Usher” (1839) and “The Premature Burial” (1844) are two more tales of being buried alive. The latter story concerns an epileptic who fears that he will be mistaken for dead and accidentally interred while in this state. Harrowing as they are, such fears, according to one critic, “[were] not...terribly unusual…during Poe’s time. When most people died at home and were quickly buried without being embalmed, newspaper stories occasionally

Edgar Allan Poe reported cases of people hearing the screams of the wrongfully buried and rushing to their rescue. The danger was common enough that concerned citizens could buy their loved ones ‘safety coffins’ in which the accidentally buried who awoke in his or her coffin could ring a bell that would (hopefully) be heard above ground by someone who could come to their aid.” On a more humorous side, “The Balloon Hoax” (1844), was Poe’s little joke on a gullible public. The April 13, 1844, issue of The New York Sun sold out by running a story on one Monck Mason and his balloon trip across the Atlantic. Alas, it was nothing more than Poe’s fictional recounting of the deeds of Thomas Monck Mason, who in 1836, had traveled in his balloon from London to Weilburg, Germany. In 1938, when Orson Wells’ narrated a radio adaption of H.G. Wells’s novel The War of the Worlds, it was so convincing that many listeners believed an invasion by extraterrestrial beings was occurring. Was Wells influenced by Poe? The most famous horror novel is Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897) about a Transylvanian prince who wanders east to London to find “new blood” and to spread the undead curse. An epic battle of good vs. evil takes place between the human monster and ordinary English subjects. Close behind is Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818). The novel has become the allegory of human hubris (i.e., “he created his own Frankenstein”). The novel tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a scientist who goes out of his way to create something new and fantastic. The

H.G. Wells scientist instead creates a human monster who declares to the world “I ought to be thy Adam, but I am rather the fallen angel.” Shelley was the wife of the famed

romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Along with Lord Byron, the three held a competition on who could create the best horror story. Frankenstein, not surprisingly, has won hands down in the court of history. The novel retells the ancient story of men believing that they are as gods. Across the Atlantic, Stephen King, one of the most popular authors of our time, graduated from teaching

high school to the best seller lists with Carrie, a 1974 novel that was later made into a popular movie starring Sissy Spacek. Carrie, a teenage girl who has telekinetic powers, is ridiculed by her high school mates after discovering the menstrual process. Carrie attends the high school prom and exacts revenge on her sadistic classmates who deny her a chance to be prom queen. The movie contains the unforgettable

scene where a hand reached out of Carrie’s grave to grab an unsuspecting Sue Snell (Amy Irving). The nightmare jolts Irving awake and will do the same to the viewer. Another American horror story novelist is H.P. Lovecraft. A native of Rhode Island, Lovecraft specialized in “weird” stories that have never stopped drawing in readers. The Call of Cthulhu (1928) centers around an ancient dragon-sea monster hybrid

that implants itself subconsciously into human minds, driving them slowly insane, causing them to speak in tongues and commit ritual acts of violence. At the Mountains of Madness (1931) continues the same theme. An Antarctic expedition goes haywire as a professor and his crew unearth the remains of a previously undiscovered prehistoric species, who as it turns out, are plenty full of life—and havoc.

t’s one thing to sit back and watch a scary film of people falling victim to evil, disgusting monsters. It’s another thing when you are in control of those individuals. Horror video games give you the thrill of being in a scary movie without putting you in any actual danger. There’s quite a collection out there for you to choose from, but there’s only a few that really send chills down your spine.

Resident Evil

A pioneer of the survival horror format, Resident Evil has spooked gamers of multiple generations since the first game came out on the PlayStation in 1996. Through 24 games, including nine main installments, the developers of Capcom are among those credited with making zombies popular again in the late 20th century. The games mainly revolve around a group of individuals who try to stop the Umbrella Corporation from spreading the T-virus, which has the power to mutate living creatures into horrifying beings. Each game ranges in control schemes, with the early games focusing on tank controls that had players move their character based on how they were oriented and later games evolving into including

The unique aspect of the game is that all characters can survive and die. Influenced heavily by psychological horror books, the games are set in a foggy fictional town in the middle of nowhere. Unlike Resident Evil, the main characters in Silent Hill are not heroes sent to vanquish evil, but normal people just looking to find someone or trying to find their way. These characters often experienced alterations of reality called the “Otherworld,” where human thoughts are materialized and monsters are present.
