man and kind-hearted father, was also an alcoholic prone to bouts of violent rage, usually against his son Bart. Bart himself was a hyperactive menace, causing mischief wherever he went. Even Marge and Lisa weren’t without their flaws, and while everybody in the family was a genuinely good person when push came to shove, the issues they had were the kind that any group of people is bound to exhibit from time to time. Against all odds, what sounded like a recipe for disaster on paper turned out laughs week after week, and before long The Simpsons became a global phenomenon. Led by an all-star cast of writers that included Greg Daniels, Al Jean and a young Conan O’Brien at one point or another, the show’s humorous takes on life and culture made it must-see TV throughout the ’90s. Over 30 seasons, a movie and nearly 700 episodes later, The Simpsons is still going strong. But over the last few years, The

Simpsons has managed to acquire an entirely different reputation from the contrarian streak it started out with. Oddly enough, the show seems to have managed to predict the future on a few dozen occasions. Any show that goes on as long as The Simpsons is bound to produce some prescient moments, but the sheer frequency with which the show’s plot points seems to find themselves playing out in our world is uncanny. Perhaps most famously, the season 11 episode “Bart to the Future,” set 30 years ahead of the episode’s 2000 release date, jokingly mentioned that Donald Trump had completed a stint in the White House before Lisa Simpson assumed the role of the country’s executive. True to the show’s satirical nature, the writers have always tried to exaggerate the world we live in just enough for the effects to become comedic. Groening himself said he was surprised that the throwaway joke, made in the middle of Trump’s failed third-party campaign, came to pass. Outside the world of politics, The Simpsons predictive streak has hit upon a number of sporting events as well. The show has correctly predicted the outcomes of three Super Bowls (XXVI, XXVII and XXIX), the 2014 FIFA World Cup, a U.S. Olympic Gold Medal in curling and Lady Gaga’s Superbowl Halftime Show performance. A 30-year-running show is bound to make some calls about how technology will develop as well, and the sixth season episode “Lisa’s Wedding” managed to make multiple accurate predictions. The characters keep up with each other through video chat about a decade before Skype and two decades before FaceTime. Lisa’s would-be fiancé Hugh is even seen talking to his watch at one point, even though Siri wouldn’t make its Apple Watch debut until 2015. The show’s London even features a building eerily similar in design and location to The Shard, a skyscraper that wouldn’t be built until 2012. Call them weird, call them omniscient, but one way or another, The Simpsons has managed to nail a number of guesses about what our world would look like. Perhaps the real takeaway here is that those accurate predictions are just a matter of the show having stuck around for three decades. Any piece of culture as large and influential as The Simpsons has become is bound to have that sort of ripple effect, and more than anything it serves as just another reason why we should appreciate that living legend of animation that spawned so many imitators before it’s gone.

ould there be a more iconic television show than Friends? A cultural phenomenon, Friends has built a legacy of devoted fans that has spanned 25 years. The comedy series that follows the lives of a close-knit group of pals living in New York City debuted on NBC in 1994 and is still a syndicated staple that millions of people tune into today. When it hasn’t been your day, week, month or even your year, siblings Ross (David Schwimmer) and Monica Geller (Courteney Cox), along with friends Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry), Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow), Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) and Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) have been there to provide comedic relief. During its 10-season run that came to a close in May 2004, the beloved cast became woven into the fabric of pop culture, giving us no shortage of witty

one-liners that cemented the series’ legacy in television history. Even a quarter of a century later, multi-generational audiences can’t help but crack

a smile when hearing the word “Pivot!” or singing along when Phoebe starts strumming “Smelly Cat” at the gang’s hangout, The Central Perk coffee shop. The show’s 25th anniversary was a testament to its popularity and perennial staying power. Warner Bros. Television pulled out all the stops to bring the show to life with fan experiences in 2019. The Central Perk—complete with its signature orange couch—was painstakingly recreated in Manhattan to mark the milestone. The replica coffee shop not only served up Java and pastries, it doubled as a pop-up museum and gift shop featuring Phoebe’s guitar, Rachel’s wigs and headshots of soap opera star Joey. The studio even teamed up with American fashion designer Ralph Lauren to release the Rachel Green Collection mimicking Jennifer Aniston’s trendsetting character’s show stopping style. Rachel, who famously landed her dream job at Ralph Lauren in the show, inspired a decade’s worth of fashion and beauty trends, most memorably leather knee-high boots and, of course, “The Rachel” layered haircut. The collection is being sold at Bloomingdale’s, another company Rachel Green worked for on Friends. A favorite among fans and critics alike throughout its 10-season run, Friends not only won an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series, but also garnered Emmy awards for Aniston and Kudrow. Friends was created by

David Crane and Marta Kauffman, who executive produced the series with Kevin Bright through Bright/ Kauffman/Crane Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. The cast, which are friends in real life and have even been known to playfully troll each other’s Instagram accounts, didn’t hold back their heartbreak when the show concluded with Ross and Rachel finally getting back together after a whirlwind romance no one could look away from—He is her lobster, after all. As the series wrapped, Aniston emotionally stated, “We’re like very delicate china right now and we’re speeding toward a brick wall.” But a show with this much staying power can’t stay away for too long. Following in the footsteps of several other popular ’90s sitcoms such as Full House and 90210, Friends is rumored to be headed for a reboot. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the six original stars, along with the creators of the show, are in talks to reunite on HBO Max, a new streaming service that includes shows and movies from HBO and Warner Bros, among others. No concrete details have been confirmed as far as the possible plotline for the reunion show since both HBO Max and Warner Bros. Television have remained mum regarding any negotiations. Still it is a small step forward in answering the questions fans have been asking since Friends ended 15 years: Will there be a reunion?

A Deep Dive Into Bikini Bottom SpongeBob SquarePants reaches 20-year nautical mile BY ANTHONY MURRAY

I

amurray@antonmediagroup.com

f you don’t know who SpongeBob Squarepants is, you’re probably living in a pineapple under the sea or even under a rock. For the past 20 years, SpongeBob SquarePants has charmed and swam his way into the homes and hearts of millions, and he’s still going strong. SpongeBob SquarePants is the brainchild of marine science educator and animator Stephen Hillenburg and premiered on Nickelodeon on July 17, 1999. The animated comedy television series takes place in the fictional town of Bikini Bottom and chronicles the adventures and endeavors of energetic frycook SpongeBob SquarePants (Tom Kenny, who also voices SpongeBob’s pet snail Gary), SpongeBob’s painfully dim-witted best friend Patrick Star

(Bill Fagerbakke), the always disgruntled and depressed Squidward Tentacles (Rodger Bumpass), extreme cheapskate and owner of the Krusty Krab—Bikini Bottom’s most popular restaurant—Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown), the ever so tiny and maniacal Plankton (Mr. Lawrence), thrill-seeking and athletic squirrel Sandy Cheeks (Carolyn Lawrence), and other nautical creatures. As the fifth-longest running American animated series, SpongeBob SquarePants’ popularity has made it a media franchise. It is the highest rated series to air on Nickelodeon and is Viacom Media Networks’ most distributed property. The show has even spawned a toy line that is spearheaded by Alpha Toy Group, a Broadway musical, and has had two theatrical releases with a third one on the way that is set to be released in

May, 2020. Interestingly enough, many of the series’ ideas originated in the unpublished educational comic book The Intertidal Zone, which Hillenburg created just 10 years prior in 1989. Seven years later in 1996, Hillenburg began developing SpongeBob SquarePants into a television series following the cancellation of Rocko’s Modern Life, which ran on Nickelodeon from 1993-96, where Hillenburg was a creative director. While developing SpongeBob, Hillenburg turned to Kenny, who had worked with him on Rocko’s Modern Life, to voice the title character. SpongeBob was originally going to be named SpongeBoy as the series was set to be called SpongeBoy Ahoy! Both of these were changed as the name was already trademarked. Most fans of SpongeBob SquarePants would remember classic

episodes such as “Sailor Mouth,” where SpongeBob and Patrick learn profanity after reading dirty words on a dumpster outside the Krusty Krab and ultimately get in trouble when they curse up a storm. Who could forget the episode “Chocolates with Nuts,” which showed SpongeBob and Patrick becoming entrepreneurs when they become chocolate bar salesmen and are chased around town by a crazed chocolate fiend. Or how about the episode “Frankendoodle” when SpongeBob created the ultimate prankster and troublemaker DoodleBob after he and Patrick find a pencil and begin to draw with it. This past February, Nickelodeon said it would recognize the 20th anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants with a series of celebrations known as the “Best Year Ever.” In honor of the anniversary, Pantone created color shades known as “SpongeBob SquarePants Yellow” and “Patrick Star Pink” to be used by Nickelodeon’s licensing partners. Romero Britto, Jon Burgerman, and the Filipino art collective Secret Fresh were commissioned by Nickelodeon to create art pieces devoted to SpongeBob SquarePants, some of which were adapted into commercial products. SpongeBob even made a splash into the fashion world when fashion designer Cynthia Rowley presented a SpongeBob SquarePantsthemed wetsuit during New York Fashion Week. Marlou Breuls presented the SpongeBob SquarePantsthemed “Icon Collection” during Amsterdam Fashion Week as well. Nike, in collaboration with Kyrie Irving, released a SpongeBob SquarePants series of shoes, accessories and apparel. Additionally, for the first time ever SpongeBob SquarePants became the theme of a cosmetics line, which was released as a limited time offering by HipDot Studios. The “Best Year Ever” also introduced an official SpongeBob SquarePants YouTube channel and a new mobile game based on the series. The “Best Year Ever” formally began with the premiere of the one-hour, live-action/animated TV special SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout. It continued that month at San Diego Comic Con, with two panels, a booth, and various activities devoted to the series. The “Best Year Ever” was recognized on Amazon Prime Day with an exclusive early release of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Best 200 Episodes Ever!, a 30-disc DVD compilation of two box sets, SpongeBob SquarePants: The First 100 Episodes and SpongeBob SquarePants: The Next 100 Episodes. Make sure to catch SpongeBob SquarePants on Nickelodeon.

30 Years of Laughs America’s Funniest Home Videos celebrates milestone anniversary BY CYNDI ZAWESKI

A

czaweski@antonnews.com

nyone who enjoys the steady stream of viral cat videos on their social media feeds—who doesn’t?— has America’s Funniest Home Videos to thank. The hourlong clip show premiered on ABC in the fall of 1989, paving the way for hilarious audience-generated content to gain a national audience before anyone heard of YouTube. Televising viewer-submitted content on primetime and asking the audience at home to cast a vote for their favorite at the end were pioneering concepts at the time. Thousands of Americans sent in their laugh-out-loud home videos for the chance to win the $100,000 grand prize during the season finale. The most popular clips often featured people and animals at their spontaneous best. Some memorable moments include a little boy who cried over his mom’s haircut, dogs being spooked by Halloween costumes and parents lip-synching to their kids’ tantrums. Viewers responded in earnest. America’s Funniest Home Videos placed within Nielsen’s Top 5 highest-rated weekly series within weeks of its debut and by March 1990, it became the number one primetime series for a short time, eclipsing CBS’ 60 Minutes for the first time in 12 years. Today, America’s Funniest Home Videos is the network’s longest running primetime television show. Beloved Full House star Bob Saget hosted the original eight seasons. He passed the torch to cohosts John Fugelsang and Daisy Fuentes in 1997. The show has since been hosted by various actors and comedians such

as D.L. Hughley and Tom Bergeron, the series’ longest serving host. Its current front man is another beloved ’90s sitcom star, Alfonso Ribeiro, aka Carlton Banks from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. “For me it is an honor,” Ribeiro said in a recent interview about the anniversary season. “Thirty years says a lot about what this format is and how it translates and connects to people all over the world, especially in America where people love to sit and laugh.” Each week, the America’s Funniest Home Videos team evaluates thousands of user-submitted home videos to curate the best of the nation’s real-life funny moments captured on video. In its 30 seasons to date, America’s Funniest Home Videos has given away more than $16 million in prize money and evaluated more than 2 million video clips from home viewers. The Dukes Fought The Law— And They Won Dukes of Hazzard celebrates 40 years BY JOE SCOTCHIE

jscotchie@antonmediagroup.com

“Just the good ol’ boys/Never meanin’ no harm/Beats all you never saw/Been in trouble with the law/Since the day they was born/ Straightenin’ the curves/Flattenin’ the hills/Someday the mountain might get ’em/But the law never will.” So sang Waylon Jennings at the beginning of each week’s episode of The Dukes of Hazzard. In the 1970s, the times were ripe for such a show. Jennings, along with his fellow Texans Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson, reigned as the new kings of country music, voices of an “outlaw” sound coming out of Austin, TX. The Dukes of Hazzard was a spinoff of the 1975 movie, Moonrunners. Set in little Hazzard County, GA, the show had a far more comedic aspect than the original movie. It centered around two moonshiners, cousins

Bo (John Schneider) and Luke Duke (Tom Wopat) doing battle with a corrupt, but bumbling county sheriff, J.C. Hogg. In the 1970s, numerous sitcoms and dramas sang the praises of small-town life, ranging from The Waltons, Little House on The Prairie, Carter Country and Alice. Jimmy Carter was in the White House and small-town chic was in. The Dukes of Hazzard fit the bill. Bo and Luke were joined by Daisy Duke (Catherine Bach), another cousin and a character lifted straight from the popular comic strip, Lil’ Abner. The boys tooled around in a bright red 1969 Dodge Charger dubbed the “General Lee,” featuring a rebel flag on the top hood. This, too, fit the Carter era. When the latter was first elected president,

he joked at a press conference that his version of Gone with The Wind shown in Plains, GA, had “General Lee burning down Schenectady, New York and the South winning the war.” Everyone laughed. Times were different. The Dukes of Hazzard ran from 1979-85, totaling 147 episodes. The Dukes were on probation for an earlier moonshining charge. Boss Hogg is out to get the Duke boys, mostly to acquire their property, which he wants to use for his own purposes. But the Boss’s crooked schemes are so ham-handed that the Duke boys manage to foil them every time. Near the end of the show’s run, Boss Hogg gives in to the boys’ genius and the three often work together to tackle threats from

the outside world to little Hazzard County. In 2005, the movie version, one featuring Burt Reynolds, Willie Nelson and Jessica Simpson, was released. It had a good early run, but received negative reviews from the critics and longtime viewers of the television series. Bo and Luke were the heroes of the series, but the real star was Daisy. Also in the 1970s, Farrah Fawcett, of Charlie’s Angels fame, posed for a color poster that ended up on the wall of every boy’s bedroom in America. At the urging of the show’s producers, Bach posed for her own poster. This, too, was popular, selling five million copies and being praised by then-First Lady Nancy Reagan, who invited Bach to the White House. The Daisy Duke character pulled in millions of viewers every week and the show still airs on reruns on The Nashville Network (TNN).

Cirque Musica Show Dazzles for the Holidays

BY COURTNEY SHAPIRO

his year, the creative team for the all-new concert experience Cirque Musica presents Holiday Wishes is in full swing in preparation for their show at NYCB Live at Nassau Coliseum on Saturday, Dec. 7. The show features the world-renowned cast of Cirque Musica, as well as a full symphony orchestra. It is truly unlike any other holiday spectacular that you’ve seen. “There are three aspects that make our shows unique,” Stephen Cook, the producer and president of TCG Entertainment, said. “The first is the theater element. We can tell a story with our actors and performers. We combine this with a 27-piece orchestra, as well as talented performers from all over the world, including Ukraine and the Czech Republic. That’s what makes us stand out.” Cirque Musica’s theme this year is “wishes all over.” The theme changes every year, and the holiday show has been successfully running for the past five years. The company wants to embrace what people want during the holiday season. “This is truly about what people are wishing over,” Cook said. “Most of the time, during the holidays, people wish to be with their friends and family. The show is very family friendly and having something that families can do during this time is very important. It’s about being able to bring families together for a couple hours with something they haven’t seen before.” Audiences will be in awe of the various performers including acrobats and aerialists, as well as the musical aspect that is perfect for the holidays. The circus performances blend effortlessly into the storytelling and musical elements. Produced by TCG Entertainment for 10 years, the shows used to be performed in symphony hall. Now, they are currently being performed in larger venues. This specific show has grown to be one of the largest in the world. This year, Cook is joined by

Antoinette Dipietropolo, the director and choreographer, who has worked on Broadway and a has a long line of live event credits. Costume designer Tristin Raines, who has worked with numerous Off-Broadway and regional theater productions, joins them, along with Charles Ford with Vue Design, who is one of the most sought-after video and lighting designers in the entertainment industry. Leading Broadway music director James Olmstead is working on Cirque Musica as well. This team of experienced and versatile individuals are likely to create an unforgettable show for members of the entire family. “It’s a team effort,” Cook said. “We plan a new holiday show each year and I’m already working on a general idea for the 2020 holiday season. as well as for the cast members. After each show, the entire cast comes out into the lobby to meet and take pictures with the audience. “My favorite part of the show is seeing the audience’s reaction when it’s over,” Cook said. “I usually sit in the back and I get to see the awe in

the room. We try to create something personal by having the cast go out and meet the audience. Most shows don’t take the time to do that and it makes the experience special for everyone.” Tickets can be bought at www. ticketmaster.com or by calling 800-745-3000.

Islanders Host Youth Jamboree BY JOSEPH WOLKIN

nstead of seeing the New York Islanders take over the Northwell Health Ice Center at Eisenhower Park, a group of future hockey stars put on their skates and took to the ice. The Islanders, continuing a tradition started 13 years ago, held their annual Islanders Jamboree at the rink, welcoming more than 350 kids to have a day of hockey-filled fun. “We had teams from all over Long Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Westchester and Manhattan,” Jocelyne Cummings, director of amateur hockey development for the New York Islanders, said. “We take a sheet of ice, split it into three rinks and it’s a marathon of hockey.” The jamboree, held at Eisenhower Park on Sunday, Nov. 24, featured 81 games. For nine hours, the kids had the opportunity to play against peers who they might not normally face. The games lasted 15 minutes each. When the buzzer went off, the teams faced new opponents, promoting the raw fun of hockey right on Long Island. “It’s a great way to give back to our younger generation of being grassroots,” Cummings said. “Being an NHL club, you want to continuously grow the game. It’s the game we love so much. It’s a way to get everyone in our market in one place with the team we love.” The team also sponsors the New York Islanders High School Hockey League, with teams consisting of players from all of Long Island, as well as the P.A.L Junior Islanders. “At this young age, they’re still learning,” Cummings said. “You’re taking away the competition and that you have to win or if you’re losing, you’re going to be sad. It’s about great sportsmanship, loving the game and celebrating the game that they’re playing and learning.” For more information about the high school league, visit www.islandershighschoolhockey. net. Long-Time Breast Cancer Program Director To Retire

A

fter 23 years as director of the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program, Hillary Rutter of Plainview will retire on Jan. 10, 2020. The program runs the oldest breast cancer hotline in the country, and provides counseling, support groups, educational programs, community outreach and advocacy to thousands of New Yorkers. Addressing unmet needs is a primary goal of the Adelphi program, which celebrates its 40th anniversary next year, and that has guided Rutter as the director. She is an innovator and a leader and has collaborated with numerous cancer and health care organizations to create programs such as Sisters United in Health/Hermanas Unidas en la Salud, which focuses on disparities in health care for women of color and the BEST (Breast Education, Screening and Treatment) project which has provided life-saving services to thousands of under served women across Long Island.

Most recently, Rutter has developed collaborative peer-to-peer support services for patients at hospitals including Northwell, St. Francis, Winthrop and Mercy Medical Center. She established the first support group in the U.S. for men with breast cancer and has acted as a consultant to many other organizations to develop programs, services and conferences. Working with the National Breast Cancer Coalition, Rutter and her staff involved New Yorkers in the advocacy process, meeting with federal, state and local legislators to promote breast cancer causes. Through their efforts the National Center for Disease Control (CDC) Breast and Cervical Treatment Act and state-level legislation was enacted, enabling uninsured or under-insured women, who were screened under the CDC screening program to receive

medical treatment once diagnosed. She has stated, “My greatest professional achievement was, with the help of my team of staff, volunteers and student interns, developing and implementing so many programs to help women and men with breast cancer and their families, and knowing that we help them get through one of their most difficult challenges with dignity and compassion.” Rutter has raised more than $15 million in grants and funds for the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program. Rutter is a licensed clinical social worker with a master’s degree in social work from Columbia University. She has served on the board of directors of the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC), Long Island

Hillary Rutter Women’s Agenda (LIWA), and the Metropolitan NY Chapter of Social Work Administrators in Health Care (SWAHC) and served as president of LIWA and SWAHC. She has appeared on Good Morning America, Good Day New York, the Today Show, News 12, ABC News, numerous other radio and television shows, and is often quoted in articles about breast cancer. “Hillary’s passion and excellence in her work has enriched lives, enlightened communities, improved approaches to care and brought renown to Adelphi,” Adelphi President Dr. Christine Riordan said. Assuring a smooth transition, Reyna Machado of Garden City, the assistant director who has been with the program for three years, will take the reins of the organization in January. —Submitted by Adelphi University

The Nutcracker Comes To Old Westbury

he Maguire Theater at SUNY College in Old Westbury will stage the Lumière Ballet’s The Nutcracker, with music by Peter I. Tchaikovsky, on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 15, at 4 p.m. The holiday favorite features an array of classically-trained young dancers from the Bay Shore-based company. The role of the Nutcracker Prince will be danced by artistic co-director Venti Petrov. The two act ballet includes historical choreographic segments and original staging by artistic co-director Svetlana Caton. While truthful to the classical tradition, for the first time this year, Lumière Ballet unveils a long time hidden conflict: The battle of the sugar plum fairies. Lumière Ballet is a 26-year-old nonprofit fine arts institution whose members represent the broad landscape of the communities it serves. “We are proud of our diversity which is reflected in the rich productions that artistic directors Caton and Petrov offer to audiences across Long Island,” a press release reads. “This annual performance of The Nutcracker brings an extraordinary group of dancers to the stage. Caton, who founded the company, has a European background and training from the great heritage of the Russian School. At the age of 12, her participation in the prestigious

Concours de Danse in Paris brought a scholarship offer to the school of the Paris Opera as well as an invitation to study with the legendary stars of the Maryinsky Imperial Ballet— Olga Preobrajenska, Liubov Egorova and Mathilda Ksenschinska. She has

Guidance Center, Neiman Marcus Partner To Help Moms

ll moms deserve some pampering, but when you’re a mother who is experiencing postpartum depression, a day out dedicated to your wellbeing is a much-needed healing experience. This fall, the place of healing was Neiman Marcus in Roosevelt Field. The renowned retailer, which is a dedicated partner and supporter of North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center, offered a “Beauty Master Class” for several moms who are clients of the Diane Goldberg Maternal Depression Program. The mothers were treated to a personalized makeup application from two representatives from lilah b., a natural line of beauty products made in Italy. “The lilah b. reps were just wonderful,” Vanessa McMullan, supervisor at the Guidance Center’s Marks Family Right from the Start 0-3+ Center in Manhasset, said. “They talked to the moms and helped them choose the right makeup for their skin.” The mothers also went home with a gift bag of products from lilah b. McMullan also expressed her gratitude to the staff at Neiman Marcus, which has partnered with the Guidance Center for the past four years, offering a variety of beauty events and also a mentoring conference for some of our teen girl clients.

“Neiman Marcus had a special room set up just for us, with extra help to care for the babies that came,” McMullan said. “All of the moms loved being together and getting some TLC. It was a perfect day.” “One of the pillars of our company is supporting the communities where Neiman Marcus stores are found,” Doris Wilshere, vice president and general manager of Neiman Marcus in Roosevelt Field, said. “We are thankful for the relationship that we have built with North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center over the four years since our store opened. We applaud the Guidance Center for the support they provide to the many Long Island families that rely on resources like the Maternal Depression Program to live happier and healthier lives.” Neiman Marcus will be hosting more events for the Guidance Center’s maternal depression clients later this month and for the foreseeable future. YOUR GARDEN

An Introduction To Clivia Breeding

BY JOHN SPAGNOLI

editorial@antonmediagroup.com

C

livia was discovered in the mid-1800s in Natal, South Africa. A much sought after plant that only had orange flowers. Later, a Clivia was discovered with yellow flowers. At this point, various colors from extensive breeding occurred. Nowadays, there are numerous colors available from yellow, orange bronze, pinkish, reddish, green and a combination of mixed colors. What should you do if you wanted to cross two different Clivia but they bloom at different times? Save the pollen from the one plant in small vials. These vial can be stored for up to five years in the freezer. If you search the internet you can inquire from breeders to buy pollen. On special plants, pollen can be very expensive. Clivia will self-pollinate, so remove the anthers early and use your saved or bought pollen. Dabble some pollen on the stigma. You will have to wait nine months for the seed to ripen. It takes five years from seed to bloom. The plant is crossed again with itself to stabilize the genes so the seeds will grow truer. You can use different pollen for interesting outcomes. If you are not into breeding, you can buy seeds from reputable sources. Be very careful if it is too good to be true, it is not what you want. I have seen seeds for $1 for five seeds with free shipping. Clearly, these are fake. I have seen posted blue Clivia flower seeds also a fake listing. It is necessary to trust the seller since five years from now you can have an ordinary colored plant. There is a risk buying seeds because seeds don’t always grow true even for breeders. Typically, seeds cost around $5 or more expensive with special crosses. On eBay auctions, you can sometime pay $40 or more for a few seeds. I would recommend joining a Facebook group on Clivia. You will soon learn who the breeders are and those that are trust worthy for seeds. I happen to love Chinese Clivia plants. There are many varieties of Chinese plants. Chinese Clivia are

grown for their amazing leaves, Henglan plants have very small leaves two inches or a just a drop more. Sparrow Clivia are small in stature, but they are larger than Henglan. Some of these plants sell for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. These plants are very special to me. They offer year-round attractiveness with a compact special leaf plant. I find that the other Clivia plants look great blooming for a few weeks. I would rather have a plant that looks great year round. This is my personnel opinion. Chinese Clivia are known for having beautiful variegated leaves. These plants can cost $50 to hundreds of dollars. The cheapest way of growing Chinese Clivia is by seeds. You can plant 1,000 variegated seeds and be lucky to have a great plant with perfect leaves and variegation. A percentage will be albino and die. That’s why you should grow at least 10 seeds. Too much light and the variegation will turn more green.

Remember that Clivia plants require early morning light and shade after that. In a warmer climate, it can be grown under the canopy of trees. Clivia plants are fascinating to

grow. It makes a fun hobby or more. Will you become a breeder? John Spagnoli is an avid gardener with experience in hybridization, and he has number of rare and common plants.

FOR THE COFFEE LOVER

The Perfect Perk F

or many people, there are few things more important in the world than a morning cup of coffee. And the quality of coffee that is in that cup is paramount. Fortunately, Nespresso never has a problem with that. Bringing the best in coffee from European cafés to your kitchen, the brand is responsible for the gift that keeps on giving: the Nespresso machine. This year, the coffee giant has released a special limited edition Essenza Mini machine, which is compact, easy to use and doesn’t compromise on taste, making it the perfect gift this holiday season. Preparing an Espresso (small size) or a Lungo (larger size) couldn’t be more convenient thanks to the two programmable buttons and an automatic flow-stop. The machine fits into the most modest of spaces—making it ideal for apartments with limited counter space and otherwise humble kitchens—but is still bold on style and personality

with a modern, clean aesthetic. For those with a more linear taste in appearance, go for the rectangular shape. For a curvier style, try the triangular model. With a quick heat up in 25 seconds, and automatic shut off after nine minutes, making yourself a cup of Joe will be faster than checking your morning emails. The Essenza Mini retails for $149 and is available in piano black, intense grey and pure white. It works with all of Nespresso’s 24 coffee flavors, including specialty season and holiday blends. RECIPE

Edible Ornaments Combine two festive holiday traditions into one for a treat that is both great for eating and gifting this season. Making DIY edible ornaments are a fun (and delicious) way to deck the halls while filling your home with the sweet smell holiday baking. It’s a thoughtful present for the dessert lovers in your life and would be a hit at a holiday cookie swap. This easy to make Christmas donut cookie recipe checks all the boxes. The finishing touch is tying a pretty red string around cookies and hanging them up on the tree.

Donut Cookies

2 Tbsp vegetable oil 3 Tbsp butter, melted 2 eggs 2 tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp salt 1 cup powdered confectioners’sugar 2½ cups all purpose flour

Icing

1 cup powdered confectioners sugar 2 tsp milk 4 tsp light corn syrup Red and green food coloring Sprinkles, festive colors

Directions for Donut Cookies

1. In a large bowl mix together oil, melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, salt, baking powder and confectioners sugar until creamy and smooth. Add the flour and continue mixing until smooth. —Cyndi Zaweski 2. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour. You can also refrigerate it

overnight. 3. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. 4. Remove the dough from the refrigerator. Scoop a tablespoon ball from the dough and roll it into a ball. 5. Roll the balls into ropes, about four inches long and half-inch in diameter. Shape the dough into circles, connecting the two ends with a gentle push. There should be a small hole remaining in the middle of the dough to make them resemble a donut. 6. Place the cookies on the baking sheets, about 1 inch apart as they will expand. Bake for 16-18 minutes, or until they turn golden color on top.

Directions for Icing

1. Put a half cup of confectioners’ sugar into two small bowls. 2. Add one tablespoon milk and two teaspoons corn syrup to each bowl.

3. Stir until you have a soft icing that will spread. If it’s not easy to spread, add a little bit more milk. 4. Add a couple drops of food color to each bowl, stirring until the color you want appears. If the color isn’t as intense as you would like add a couple more drops of food coloring. 5. Dip the top of each cookie into the icing, or using the back of a spoon to ice the cookies. Immediately add sprinkles on top. —Recipe by Brooklyn Farm Girl; www.brooklynfarmgirl.com

SPIRITS & SWEETS

A Perfect Pairing

Sweet sensation Sugarfina and Ryan Reynolds’ Aviation Gin make for a sweet combination BY JENNIFER FAUCI

C

hampagne and treats, spirits and sweets. What could be better than a classic cocktail and candy? As the face and owner of Aviation Gin, Ryan Reynolds will have you believe that nothing could be better. The actor is the latest celebrity to get into the alcohol business. He also has a sweet spot for, well, sweets. Reynolds teamed up with Sugarfina, the ultimate candy store for adults—renowned for its world-famous Champagne Bears, Rosé wine-infused gummy bears, and more cocktail-inspired treats—to introduce an exclusive new candy collection. Made in collaboration with Aviation American Gin, the specialty gift box features three sweets, all packed with the delicious flavor of gin. First up in this fancy flight are lemony-sweet Gin Fizz Bears. Infused with a sip of Aviation American Gin, these bears start your palate off with a sugar coating until lemon citrus takes over. The last few bites is where the gin comes in, leaving a few notes of flavor for you to mull over before moving onto the next treat. The bento box continues with Gimlet Gummies, adorable shaped airplanes. A nice follow up to the sweet, these tart gummies are infused with gin and a twist of lime to keep that citrus party going. Fancy some chocolate? Try a Gin and Tonic Cordial. These bon bons pack quite a punch with what tastes like a full shot of gin, as a liquid center is at the core of this dark chocolate morsel. The perfect pre-dessert snack to any holiday gathering, visit www. sugarfina.com to order your unique gift. Must be of legal drinking age to purchase Aviation American Gin, as well as the Sugarfina collection.

baton of maestro David Bernard. Featuring dazzling choreography, exquisite costumes and special effects by some of the industry’s top professionals, Eglevsky Ballet’s production is the longest, continuously running Nutcracker productions on Long Island. Directed and choreographed by Executive Artistic Director Maurice Brandon Curry, Eglevsky Ballet’s professional company will be joined by select students from the Eglevsky Ballet academy to tell the story of a young girl named “Clara” and how a mysterious gift from her “Godfather Drosselmeyer” brings about enchanted dreams and fantastical scenes. This year, “Clara” is being portrayed by 15-year old Kathy Benitez of Bethpage. Benitez has been studying at Eglevsky Ballet in their pre-professional training program

for the last three years. This new production, which premiered in 2015, has several different elements chosen to develop the relationship between “Clara” and the “Nutcracker Prince”. Curry replaces the pas de deux usually performed by the Snow Queen and Snow King with one danced by Benitez and the “Nutcracker Prince”, portrayed by 17-year old student Paolo Tarini. Tarini is a student at the American Ballet Theatre Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School. The young Tarini was recommended personally by former ABT principal dancer and current Artistic Director of the ABT JKO School, Cynthia Harvey. The two young dancers will dance a pas de deux to the music for the famous snow scene. Tickets may be purchased from the Tilles Center Box Office or through Ticketmaster.

SWEET SENSATIONS

Mix And Mingle

Hershey debuts holiday-themed chocolate treats

BY JOSEPH WOLKIN

T

here is nothing like unwrapping the gift of chocolate during the holiday season. It is literally the sweetest present. From white and dark chocolate, to peanut butter cups and dipped pretzels, the options for gifting Hershey’s are as plentiful as they are popular. The cocoa bean, also known as cacao, is one of the more bitter seeds. It derives from South America, mainly in the area within the Amazon Basin, but there are plenty of chocolate treats that come from Africa, too. About 70 percent of modern-day cocoa beans come from West Africa. But few companies have created a magical treat like Hershey’s has. The Pennsylvania-based cocoa company, founded in 1894 by Milton Hershey, continues to be an American favorite. Come holiday season,

Hershey’s always unveils festive treats. This year is no different, with five brand new holiday-themed candies, in addition to the perennially favorites (Think red and green wrapped Hershey Kisses and special chocolate bars.) Take a look at some of Hershey’s newest products, which make the perfect gift for basically anyone.

Reese’s Peanut Butter Holiday Lights These peanut butter and

chocolate festive lights look just like the ones hanging on your tree—only these are delicious. The festive treat makes for a great stocking stuffer for the Reese’s lovers in your life.

Hershey’s Dipped Pretzels White Crème with Nonpareils

These bite size pretzels dipped in white crème and decorated with sprinkles are a delicious little dessert for the holiday season. These treats are wonderful to savor alone or share with family and friends.

Hershey’s Holiday Mix and Mingle Tin

Kick off the gathering season with the holiday mix and mingle tin. You’ll be the hit of the holiday party when bringing this snack mix of Hershey’s Cookies and Crème Drops, candy-coated milk chocolates,

Whoppers and mini pretzels. It is the perfect combination of sweet and salty.

Kit Kat Sweet Cinnamon Miniatures

Kit Kat is introducing a brand new flavor just in time for the holiday season. The iconic crispy wafers are now surrounded by sweet cinnamon flavor. These make the perfect winter dessert for all. They have quite the strong taste, and if you like cinnamon, you can’t go wrong with this treat.

Reese’s Mystery Shapes

For the first time in 20 years, Reese’s is rolling out seasonally inspired Mystery Shapes. Unwrap a surprise that has the perfect ratio of peanut butter and chocolate, because let’s be honest, that’s what really matters. Try out all three before the new year.

VACATION &TRAVEL

AN ANTON MEDIA GROUP SPECIAL

A Mountain Retreat BY JENNIFER FAUCI

specialsections@antonmediagroup.com

Photo courtesy of Mohonk Mountain House

H

igh up in the mountains of New Paltz, lies a dreamy lodge in a quiet, rustic landscape. But what may look like a Bavarian castle is Mohonk Mountain House a historic spa and resort surrounded by 40,000 acres of forest and wildlife. Founded by the Smiley family in 1869, the Victorian Castle Resort is in the midst of celebrating its milestone 150th year. And just because it’s nestled deep in the Hudson Valley doesn’t mean you’ll be short of activities.

History

In 1869, founder and hotel proprietor Albert Smiley purchased a 10-room inn on Lake Mohonk, eventually expanding it into the sprawling, marvelous Mountain House that exists today. Smiley’s vision was to preserve a natural paradise for guests, a place for rejuvenation from the stresses of work and city life. His twin brother Alfred also played a heavy hand in the success of Mohonk but it was Daniel Smiley, the younger half-brother, who became the

key figure in the entrepreneurial development of the home’s buildings and grounds and overall financial survival. Then, Albert Smiley purchased 300 acres and a 10-room inn by a majestic glacial lake in the Hudson Valley. Today, the fourth and fifth generations of the Smiley family are still involved in Mohonk, truly making the house a family-style resort. History tours are available for guests to learn more about the family and the home, a recommended activity for

first-time visitors to Mohonk. Also new for media lovers is Hidden Histories, an augmented reality experience that immerses guests in the history of the storied resort. A mobile app was specifically developed for Mohonk and sends visitors on a journey to locate 12 pieces of artwork that act as trigger points for the app.

This is a theme puzzle with the subject stated below. Find the listed words in the grid. (They may run in any direction but always in a straight line. Some letters are used more than once.) Ring each word as you find it and when you have completed the puzzle, there will be 18 letters left over. They spell out the alternative theme of the puzzle.

INTERNATIONAL WORD FIND Arranging flowers

ARIES (March 21-April 19). One person cannot make another person trust. Trusting is an individual choice. This week, it all boils down to the level of confidence you have about the realm of the unknown that extends between you and another person. You won’t give your trust without careful thought into what has been earned. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). You’ll tell a story to take things to the next level in a project, transaction or relationship. The more specific, definitive and polarizing this story is, the better your chance for a quick answer. You don’t want everyone to say “yes” on this one. What you want is the right person to say yes. A fast “no” is better than a maybe. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Many invisible things become quite visible indeed with implements such as an X-ray machine, telescope, microscope and the like. Imagination will be your tool of choice for dealing with the invisible this week. You’ll vividly see alternate realities as you project the outcome of different situations. CANCER (June 22-July 22). You chose your path, and now you’re not so sure it will work for you. This could be your fear cropping up to cause interference. We all have resistance to change, and its arguments can be mighty convincing. Take a chance. For one week, trust your mentor more than you trust your own fear. See what happens. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). People can react to the world or they can purposefully respond to it. It’s a difference in mindset you’ll be exploring this week. Be curious enough about yourself to understand your own cues. Figuring out your triggers and urges will allow you to lead and direct yourself without tapping the limited resource of willpower. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). If you took a poll, everyone who loves you would agree that you have been wronged. And yet, what good does it do you to hold on to toxic resentment -- something rotten in the emotional pool. This is your week to pull it out and purify. Maybe you don’t want to forgive, fine. Think of it as more of a review followed by a purge. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). People bring a lifetime of experiences to their relationship with you, so it’s safe to assume that many of their behaviors are more about them than you. To get overly involved in their reactions would be asking for complications you don’t need. It’s healthier to check your intent and practice not being attached. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). What is the benefit of being attached to your own anger? Maybe it is a motivator to create better defenses or a reminder to keep you from repeating past mistakes. With a creative approach, you can find something other than rage that would serve the same purpose, whilst freeing up energy for other things. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You believe that those who are going through a hard time deserve caring and tenderness. You’re also aware that there’s a point in which the softness has to end and life must go back to normal. You’ll be so adept at navigating life’s rhythms that people will look to you for timing cues. You’re a kind of bandleader. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). An achievement mindset is one in which you can trust yourself to do what you say you’re going to do. To get there, you need an intimate knowledge of your preferences, tendencies and limitations. This way, you can only say you’re going to do things that are actually, realistically in the realm of likelihood. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Just because people work together doesn’t mean they all contribute equally. Sure, they each play a role. Some of those roles seem to be “obstacle” or “naysayer,” which will drive you crazy if you expect something different. Stay focused on what is and who are working. What you ignore will naturally diminish. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Surprisingly, you feel freer when you have an anchor. There’s safety in knowing you’re tied onto something that you can’t easily get away from -- that you may lose yourself, but you’ll never be more than a certain distance from the mothership. So secure your tether. It will allow you to take this week’s big risk.

Forget The Politics, Enjoy The Drama The West Wing celebrates 20 years BY FRANK RIZZO

frizzo@antonmediagroup.com

W

ith the debut of The West Wing on NBC in September, 1999, network television found the show that ushered in its own “Golden Age,” much like The Sopranos had done for cable. The series about a fictional Democratic president and the functioning of his White House went on to earn critical acclaim and win a then record-tying 26 Emmy awards during its seven-year, 156-show run. Though it never finished higher than 10th in the yearly ratings, it drew, at its peak, 17.2 million viewers. The strong ensemble cast, sharp dialogue (it mastered a technique called “walk and talk”), vital political debates and humanizing of the political class made the series one of the most acclaimed in television history. It shows up regularly on “all-time great” lists.

Genesis

The series would not have seen the light without The American President (1995). That romantic comedy starring Michael Douglas as widowed chief executive Andrew Shepherd provided the inspiration and impetus for the series. Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin has said in interviews that he wrote an excessively long script for the movie and was to draw on its plot elements, story ideas and even dialogue throughout his tenure as executive producer of the TV series. Sorkin had visited the White House in researching his movie script, had met with President Bill Clinton’s top aides and had observed West Wing employees. In interviews he said that he had been impressed with the passion, idealism and dedication to serve the public that the staff exhibited. In his mind, the visit negated the popular perception that public servants and bureaucrats were self-serving, power-hungry and lazy; he noted that they worked long hours in cramped cubicles for a fraction of what they could earn in the private sector. Sorkin, who wrote the scripts for virtually all of the first four seasons (he left before the start of the fifth year), had to be convinced to make the television series. Politics, he said in interviews, had never made for good dramatic television or ratings

Cast of The West Wing (Photo by NBC) success. In dramatizing conflict, no matter what side of a controversial issue you came down on, you were bound to alienate 50 percent of the viewers. This was poison for a medium that depended on “eyes” to get the needed advertising dollars. The West Wing, as originally conceived and for the first few episodes, was mainly concerned with the nuts and bolts of the staff functions. The president was supposed to be a minor player, rarely seen. “I was the last one to join the cast and when I started, it was just a peripheral character—the focus was to be on the staff, not the First Family,” Martin Sheen (President Josiah “Jed” Bartlet) said in an interview, “When I did the pilot, my contract was for just three years and it was confined to maybe three or four episodes every season.” Of course, Sheen’s screen presence increased, and Bartlet soon became the central character. There is no doubt that Sorkin’s left-liberal sympathies set the tone for the show. In a piece in Vanity Fair magazine, Joy Press wrote: “The West Wing’s vision of a liberal, populist president...and his staffers served as a fantasy bubble for battered Democrats—an addictive weekly dose of idealism, collegiality, gravitas, and quasi-Shakespearean speeches delivered on a dime.” The show hired consultants from both major parties who had worked in the White House to lend realism to the settings and procedures, and critique and develop ideas.

Inherent Drama

Ever since the expansion of presidential power that began with Franklin Roosevelt, the Oval Office in particular and the West Wing of the White House in general have assumed outsized roles in our politics. It’s where big decisions are made that affect the lives of millions, shape the nation’s direction and determine war and peace. And as commander-in-chief with a nuclear arsenal at his command, the president has at his fingertips the fate of humanity. Drama is inherent in the way that various competing political, social and economic forces try to influence the president and his staff in making decisions. And also in the way that staff intrigues play out in the making of policy. The “King and his court”–and their equivalents throughout the ages— have provided dramatic inspiration for writers since the great Greek dramatists who lay the groundwork for the theater as we know it. The West Wing dealt with palace intrigues, egos and ambitions, the compromises and backroom deals that are at the heart of “sausage making”—the crafting of policies and legislation. Every television series reflects the ethos, attitudes and world view of its age. Star Trek, despite being set in the distant 23rd century, presented occasional shows that were thinly-veiled allegories of the great forces and debates that made that decade so memorable and influential. Likewise, though it tried to avoid

direct references to current events, The West Wing had something to say about issues like same-sex marriage, nuclear proliferation, marijuana legalization, terrorism, military responses to foreign crises, homegrown political extremism and many others. It had its critics, with conservatives complaining that their views were simplified and right wing figures were caricatured. “The Left Wing,” concluded US News & World Report columnist John Leo, and his view were echoed by others. The series ended in 2006, with its last two seasons partially taken up with a presidential campaign to succeed Bartlet. Democrat Matt Santos (Jimmy Smits) defeats Republican Arnold Vinick (Alan Alda) in the election and then appoints his rival as Secretary of State. It is such a reminder of a less divisive and toxic political era that keeps the series popular in streaming services. To those who miss the series, a weekly podcast began in 2016 that discusses every episode, and features former cast members. According to Wikipedia, “On March 25, 2019, screenwriters Josh Olson (Oscar-nominated for A History of Violence) and Dave Anthony launched The West Wing Thing, in which the hosts ‘watch and then discuss’ an episode of the series, analyzing and critiquing the show itself as well as its relationship to real-life American politics, both at the time it originally aired and in the present day.”

The 30th Anniversary

How can anyone forget the show about nothing? BY JOSEPH WOLKIN

or a show about nothing, there was a whole lot of something on TV screens throughout America, thanks to the hit sitcom Seinfeld. Created by television icons Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David, Seinfeld first appeared as an NBC pilot on July 5, 1989. But it had a different name: The Seinfeld Chronicles. The pilot, though, was unsuccessful at the time. Almost a year went by until the dynamic duo signed a four-episode deal, starting on May 31, 1990. Immediately, Seinfeld became an instant hit, eventually turning into an astonishing 180 episodes. Seinfeld, a Jewish comedian from New York City, is joined by his buddies, Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards) and George Costanza (Jason Alexander) throughout the series’ nine seasons. Who can forget the iconic Season 7 hit, “The Soup Nazi,” where Yev Kassem (Larry Thomas) yells and frightens customers who want his famous soup? Of course, he shouts, “No soup for you!” at George, who was, of course, being George at the soup stand. And there are dozens of other unforgettable episodes. In Season 2, “The Chinese Restaurant” episode appears, and it might be the most relatable television episode in history. The gang arrives

at a Chinese restaurant, but after waiting and waiting, they decide it’s finally time to get up and leave. Once they do, “Seinfeld, four” is yelled out. Don’t forget about “The Puffy Shirt” episode in Season 5, when Jerry heads onto the stage of Today, wearing a ridiculous shirt because Kramer’s then-girlfriend (the low talker) whispered something to him and he had no clue what she was saying. The show is known for not being

It’s chocolate, it’s peppermint —it’s delicious. —Cosmo Kramer, “The Junior Mint” “Hello, Newman.” —Jerry Seinfeld, 15 times throughout the series “George, the word around the office is that you’re a Communist.” —George Steinbrenner (played by Larry David), “The Race” “Yada, yada, yada.” —Marcy (Suzanne Cryer), “The Yada Yada” “You double-dipped the chip.” —Timmy (Kieran Mulroney), “The Implant”

chronological, truly remarkable considering how famous it became. Few episodes carried over to the next, with one seldom having anything to do with another. For Seinfeld’s 20th anniversary, David, who stars in Curb Your Enthusiasm on HBO, it was time for a reunion. The quadruplet would appear in multiple episodes during Curb’s seventh season, actually having one full episode

dedicated to making a modern-day Seinfeld. As the schlub that David is on the hit series, playing himself, he attempts to win back his wife Cheryl (Cheryl Hines) by casting her on the fake reunion show as George’s ex-wife, Amanda. Instead of having an awkward show on another network, this reunion felt right, combining the alternate universes of David’s unfiltered Curb Your Enthusiasm with Seinfeld. The reunion became a massive hit throughout the world, leaving Seinfeld fans wanting more of the “show about nothing.” Unfortunately, there are no signs of a Seinfeld revival, though, Seinfeld himself has teased the idea in the past. Fortunately, for Seinfeld fans, the show is coming to Netflix in 2021, in addition to the syndication deals on various television networks. While no one really knows if the cast will return to make a true reunion, the show hasn’t disappeared from TVs and it won’t anytime soon. My grandfather was a quitter. I was raised to give up.” —George Costanza, “The Old Man” “Get Out!” —Elaine Benes, dozens of times throughout the series “I’m a U.S. postal worker and my mail truck was just ambushed by a band of backwoods mail-hating survivalists.” —Newman (Wayne Knight), “The Bottle Deposit”

M

onty Python’s Flying Circus my have only run on television from 1969 through 1974 for a grand total of 45 episodes, but the influence spurred by its brand of surreal sketch comedy is immeasurable. Lorne Michaels counts the show as a major influence on Saturday Night Live and its legion of creative progeny include Sacha Baron Cohen, John Oliver, Rowan Atkinson, Seth MacFarlane, Trey Parker, Matt Stone, Mike Myers, Jim Carrey, Matt Groenig, and “Weird Al” Yankovic. Author Neil Gaiman compared the Pythons as being the comedic equivalent of The Beatles. Originally shot for the BBC, the sextet of John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin and Terry Jones, created a series of surreal situations, mixed with risqué and innuendo-laden humor, sight gags and observational sketches without punchlines. Gilliam used animation as segues to break up live-action bits centered on the idiosyncrasies of British life. The intellectual bent of this very Anglified brand of comedy nonetheless attracted a devoted American following, once the episodes started getting aired on PBS in the mid-1970s.

Memorable sketches included “The Dead Parrot,” “The Ministry of Silly Walks,” “The Spanish Inquisition,” “Cheese Shop,” “The Undertaker,” “Nudge Nudge,” “Self Defense Against Fresh Fruit,” “Exploding Penguin” “The Fish-Slapping Dance,” “Spam,” “Fish License,” “The Lumberjack Song,” “The Piranha Brothers” and “Argument Clinic.” While 1971’s And Now For Something Completely Different was the Pythons’ first foray into film via this compilation of sketches from the series, it wasn’t until the show wrapped up in 1974 that the troupe decided to embark on shooting their first proper film. The sophomore follow-up, 1975’s Monty Python and the Holy Grail was funded by investments from members of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull, was directed by Jones and Gilliam and was based on the Arthurian legend. Released in 1979, the next film was Monty Python’s Life of Brian, a lampoon of the New Testament that focused on Brian Cohen, born at the same time in a neighboring stable to Jesus. Directed solely by Jones, the movie was financed by George Harrison of The Beatles. In 1982, Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl was released as a straight-up concert film. The following year,

Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life was released. Its string of sketches based on the ages of man from birth to death hearkened back to the dark, disturbing and surreal humor of the original television series. With Chapman’s death in 1989, no full-on reunions of the troupe have prevented any official reunions, although members have gotten together for appearances. Among them were the five surviving Pythons and what was allegedly Chapman’s ashes receiving an AFI Star Award at the 1998 U.S. Comedy Arts Festival, marking the first time they reunited on stage for the first time in 18 years. A live tour in 1999 was agreed to in principle before Michael Palin backed out. The surviving five’s last outing together was Monty Python Live (Mostly): One Down, Five to Go, a stage show held at The O2 in London in July 2014. Having lost a legal case to Holy Grail producer Mark Forester, the members owed him $994,600 in legal fees and royalties. The idea was to have a reunion to pay off this debt. The one show was expanded to 10 shows due to ticket demand. It was their first live performance together in 34 years, the first without member Graham Chapman, who died in 1989, and to date it has been their last.

Terry Gilliam The sole American Python, Gilliam’s primary contributions were cut-out animations including the opening title of the iconic giant foot. That said, Gilliam appeared as a series of characters including The-Knight-Who-Hits-PeopleWith-A-Chicken, Percy Bysshe Shelley in the “Michael Ellis” episode and Cardinal Fang in “The Spanish Inquisition.” Terry Jones An Oxford University graduate, Jones worked with writing partner Michael Palin on Do Not Adjust Your Set and The Frost Report helping create Monty Python’s Flying Circus. A respected medieval historian, he is credited with being largely responsible for the show’s surreal structure of having sketches flow from one to the next without using punchlines. Michael Palin Nowadays known more for his series of travel documentaries, Palin came to Monty Python by way of prior programs The Ken Dodd Show, The Frost Report and Do Not Adjust Your Set. He most often wrote with fellow Python member Terry Jones and was considered by his troupe mates as having the widest range. Eric Idle The most musical of the troupe, Idle was not only a member of the parody rock band The Rutles and eventually won a Tony Award for Best Musical for writing music and lyrics for Spamalot, but penned many popular Python songs including “Always Look On the Bright Side of Life” and “Galaxy Song.”

ons of television anniversary milestones are going on this year. And while Long Island Weekly has either created special issues for certain shows (The Brady Bunch, Sesame Street) or dedicated specific articles to shows in this very issue (Seinfeld, The Simpsons, SpongeBob SquarePants, The West Wing, Friends, The Dukes of Hazzard), a number of other series should be acknowledged. (Although the less said about Saved By the Bell, Baywatch and Family Matters, the better.)

40 Years The Facts Of Life (1979-1988) A spin-off from Diff’rent Strokes, this show featured Charlotte Rae’s Edna Garrett leaving to become the housemother for an all-female boarding school. And while producers decided the glut of characters necessitated axing a number of cast members after the first season (including Molly Ringwald), the nine seasons the show ran introduced the world to Kim Fields, Lisa Whelchel, Nancy McKeon, Mindy Cohn, George Clooney and Pamela Segall. television adaptation of the 1920s comic strip, but cheesy special effects doomed this vehicle that starred Gil Gerard, Erin Gray and the talents of master voice-over legend Mel Blanc. Producer Glen A. Larson, who was having success with Battlestar Galactica on rival network ABC, spearheaded this NBC show. Unfortunately, his recycling of props, costumes and effects shots from his other show helped doom Buck Rogers to a two-season run. Trapper John, M.D. (1979-1986) A spin-off of the 1970 film MASH (and not the CBS series), this hour-long medical drama starred Pernell Roberts (sans toupee) as Dr. “Trapper” John McIntyre, 28 years after his Korean War discharge, working as the chief of surgery at San Francisco Memorial Hospital. Among the series regulars were Gregory Harrison, Madge Sinclair, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Timothy Busfield and Lorna Luft.

The American science-fiction series Quantum Leap ran for five season on NBC and starred Scott Bakula.

Benson (1979-1986) The late Robert Guillaume, who played a wise-cracking butler named Benson DuBois in the sitcom Soap, had his character spun off into this series that found him as the head of household affairs for a widowed governor. Guillaume wound up winning a 1985 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Fun fact: Jerry Seinfeld played a role as a delivery boy named Frankie for three episodes in 1980 before he was asked to leave because of creative differences. Hart To Hart (1979-1984) Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers played the jet-setting namesake couple Jonathan and Jennifer Hart. Created by novelist and television writer Sidney Sheldon, this hour-long mystery television series found the duo globe-trotting and solving crimes with the aid of their butler Max in a premise not unlike the classic Hollywood Thin Man movie series.

30 Years Quantum Leap (1989-1993) This science fiction series starred Scott Bakula as Dr. Sam Beckett, a physicist who time travels, replacing specific people with the intention of correcting historical mistakes. Aided by wise-cracking buddy Admiral Al Calavicci (Dean Stockwell), Beckett’s travels meant each episode took place in a different time and setting each week. Tales From The Crypt (1989-1996) HBO ponied up the money for this horror anthology inspired by the 1950s EC Comics series of the same name. Executive producers included Hollywood big shots Richard Donner, Walter Hill, Joel Silver and Robert Zemeckis. Its success spawned a series of spin-off films, a Saturday morning cartoon, a Christmas album and even a radio series. Coach (1989-1997) This sitcom starred Craig T. Nelson (The Incredibles, Poltergeist) as Hayden T. Fox, head coach of the fictional NCAA Division I-A Minnesota University Screaming Eagles football team. Also rounding out the cast were Jerry Van Dyke, Shelly Fabares and Bill Fagerbakke, nowadays known as the voice of Spongebob Squarepants’ Patrick Star. Doogie Howser, M.D. (1989-1993) Created by Steven Bochco (Hill Street Blues) and David E. Kelley (Ally McBeal), this hour-long medical drama starred Neil Patrick Harris in his pre-How I Met Your Mother days as the teenage title character who was a teen physician. The show has blazed the trail for future hospital dramas, including the ABC series The Good Doctor and Fox’s The Resident.

Hailed as one of televisions essential dramas, The Sopranos ran for six seasons on HBO.

15 Years

E.R. (1994-2009) This hour-long medical drama was set in Chicago’s fictional County General Hospital and is the second-longest running primetime series of this sort behind Grey’s Anatomy. The show was based on a screenplay written by author Michael Crichton, based on his own experiences as a medical student in a busy hospital emergency room. The show won 116 awards in total, shot 331 episodes over 15 seasons and grossed more than $3 billion in television revenues as of 2014.

Lost (2004-10) Created by Jeffrey Lieber, J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof, this hour-long drama followed the survivors of a commercial jet airliner flying between Sydney and Los Angeles after it crashed on a mysterious island somewhere in the South Pacific Ocean. While the primary storyline was set on the island, flashbacks and flash-forwards propelled the narrative, often with quite a number of supernatural and science fiction nuances.

20 Years Futurama (1999-2013) While the show’s run was broken up by a 20032007 stretch of reruns ran on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim before it was picked up for new episodes on Comedy Central for three years starting in 2010. This Matt Groening’s science fiction sitcom spawned four direct-to-video films, won seven of 17 Annie Awards (excellence in animation in film and television), six of 12 Emmys and included tie-ins to a comic book series, video games, calendars, clothes and figurines. Freaks and Geeks (1999-2000) Even though the Paul Feig/Judd Apatow teen dramedy only lasted 18 episodes, this much-loved cult series served as a springboard for the likes of James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Busy Phillips, John Francis Daley, Martin Starr, Samm Levine and Linda Cardellini. The Sopranos (1999-2007) David Chase’s hour-long American crime drama highlighted the trials and tribulations of a New Jersey-based Italian-American mob boss trying to balance family life with that of the leader of a criminal organization. Between the cast and writing, the show has a devoted fan following that endures to this day. The Many Saints of Newark, a prequel film written by Chase and Lawrence Konner and directed by Alan Taylor, is confirmed for release in September 2020. Family Guy (1999-present) Technically celebrating its 18th anniversary (the show was canceled from 2003 to 2005 until Fox resurrected it), Seth MacFarlane’s brainchild centers on the Griffins, a dysfunctional Rhode Island family whose exploits are the springboard for loads of surreal and dark humor framed by meta-fictional cutaway gags. It’s the closest rival to The Simpsons.

10 Years Modern Family (2009-20) This year marks the final season of this mockumentary family sitcom that follows the exploits of patriarch Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill) and his blended family, which consists of nuclear, stepand same-sex variations. Over time the show won 22 Emmy Awards out of 75 nominations. Archer (2009-present) Inspired by the James Bond and Pink Panther franchises, this adult animated sitcom centers on the exploits of eight dysfunctional secret agents voiced by the likes of the stellar H. John Benjamin (Sterling Archer), Jessica Walter (Malory Archer), Aisha Tyler (Lana Kane), Judy Greer (Cheryl Tunt), Amber Nash (Pam Poovey), Chris Parnell (Cyril Figgis), Lucky Yates (Dr. Algernop Krieger) and creator Adam Reed (Ray Gillette). Community (2009-2015) Based on creator Dan Harmon’s own experiences attending a community college, this sitcom was situated in the fictional town of Greendale, CO. The ensemble cast of characters not only featured Chevy Chase and Joel McHale, but provided exposure for a raft of up-and-coming talent including Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Ken Jeong and Jim Rash. Parks and Recreation (2009-2015) Set in the fictional town of Pawnee, IN, this political satire sitcom starred Amy Poehler as perky mid-level bureaucrat Leslie Knope. Poehler led a crack ensemble cast that included Rashida Jones, Rob Lowe, Netta, Aziz Ansari, Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, Chris Pratt, Adam Scott, Paul Schneider, Jim O’Heir and Billy Eichner. Reallife politicians that had cameos throughout the series included Vice President Joe Biden, Senator John McCain and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Greatest Games Ever Aired Six of the best matches in 100 years of the NFL BY CHRISTOPHER BIRSNER cbirsner@antonmediagroup.com

1958 NFL Championship

1992 Wild Card Game

Baltimore Colts at New York Giants Dec. 28, 1958

Houston Oilers vs. Buffalo Bills Jan. 3, 1993

Dubbed by many as the “greatest game ever played,” the 1958 NFL Championship pitted the Colts and Giants in a nationally televised showdown in Yankee Stadium. What made this game truly special was that it was the first-ever sudden death overtime game in the NFL’s history. When the Giants couldn’t capitalize after winning the coin toss, Colts quarterback Johnny Unitas led his team down the field and Alan Ameche ran in the score to win the championship. It is seen as the game that launched the NFL into popularity, helped especially by the fact that it was aired on NBC for the nation to watch.

Frank Reich, current Indianapolis Colts coach and Freeport native, replaced Jim Kelly as the quarterback of the Buffalo Bills for a wild card game against the Houston Oilers. Trying to make their third Super Bowl appearance in a row, the Bills fell in a deep hole as it was 28-3 Oilers at the end of the first half and 35-3 early in the second half thanks to a pick six. But Reich, having come back from a 31-0 deficit at the University of Maryland, led the team in the biggest comeback in NFL history, winning in overtime 41-38.

1967 NFL Championship

“Monday Night Miracle”

Dallas Cowboys at Green Bay Packers Dec. 31, 1967

Miami Dolphins vs. New York Jets Oct. 23, 2000

In the second year of the Super Bowl era, the Cowboys took a trip to Wisconsin to take on the Packers in the coldest game in NFL history. “The Ice Bowl” was played at temperatures around -15 degrees, with an average wind chill of around -48 degrees, and the field began to freeze over as the game went on. The match is defined by the game-winning drive by Bart Starr and the Packers when center Ken Bowman made a double team block to get Starr, who decided to keep the ball, into the end zone to win the game on a short-yardage touchdown.

The Dolphins were beating up on their rival Jets in a late October regular season game. Down 30-7 at the end of the third, Jets broadcaster Howard David said that, even with the fourth quarter yet to play, the game was “over.” However, a 23 point rally, including amazing touchdown grabs by Ladarius Green and Wayne Chrebet, tied the game. It was a back-and-forth affair from there, but the Jets were able to keep up with Miami and stunned them in a 40-37 overtime thriller.

Super Bowl III

Super Bowl XLII

New York Jets vs. Baltimore Colts Jan. 12, 1969

New York Giants vs. New England Patriots Feb. 3, 2008

It was one of the biggest upsets in sports history, and it’s what turned the tide as the NFL and AFL began its merger. Jets quarterback Joe Namath guaranteed his team would come out as champions, even though neither AFL team who had played in the game before had come close to winning. Namath threw 200 yards on the Colts defense while Matt Snell ran 121 yards on them. The Gang Green defense stifled a good Colts offense, racking up four interceptions to win the game. It was this moment that proved the teams of the AFL can compete with the NFL.

No one beat the Patriots all year. They were 18-0, and they were looking to become the first NFL team ever to win 19 games and go undefeated. The only team standing in their way were the 10-6 Giants. But the perfect team did not play well enough on offense, thanks to a stout G-Men defensive line. Down by three late in the fourth quarter, Giants quarterback Eli Manning escaped pressure to throw to receiver David Tyree, who was able to pin the ball to his helmet and come down with the catch. Plaxico Burress later caught the game-winning touchdown to cap off another one of the biggest upsets in NFL history.
