Super Woman Andrea Martin’s latest role is Ghost of Christmas Past in Broadway’s A Christmas Carol BY ANTHONY MURRAY

really remember the joy of it more than anything.” If you’re a cartoon or animation fanatic, you’ve probably heard one of Martin’s many characters that she has voiced over the years in shows, such as The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, Kim Possible, Rugrats, Sesame Street, The Simpsons, Hercules and more. “It’s the easiest thing in the world,” Martin laughed when asked about how hard it is to do voice-over work. “You don’t have to wear makeup or get your hair done. You just show up, do a little voice in three takes and you’re done. It’s fabulous. I haven’t done much voice-over work lately. When I was living in Los Angeles, I was doing a lot of them. I’m quite partial to Miss Fowl from Jimmy Neutron. That was fun. What I really love were all the voices that I did for Sesame Street for Elmo’s World. I did that for years.” For the Great White Way, Martin won Tony Awards for Best Featured Actress In A Musical in 2013 for her work in Pippin and for My Favorite Year in 1993. Her Emmy Award wins came from her work in SCTV. Those awards were something that weren’t on Martin’s radar at all. “I know it’s hard to understand, but when I was growing up, maybe some thought about where they’d end up because there wasn’t social media and there wasn’t YouTube. There weren’t any outlets so I didn’t really have goals,” Martin explained. “One thing just led to another. I was successful in one play and then I auditioned for another and so on, but I never mapped out a career. I still don’t map it out.” Currently, Martin is the Ghost of Christmas Past in playwright Jack Thorne’s adaptation of A Christmas Carol on Broadway, which also stars Campbell Scott, who plays miserable miser Ebenezer Scrooge. The two previously worked together in Broadway’s Noises Off. “I was asked to do it and I just love the British version of it and Matthew Warchus as a director,” Martin said about how she got involved with the Christmas classic. “I also wanted to do something that was joyful, decent and
he’s won Emmy, Tony and Drama Desk awards for her outstanding work, starred in countless films and television shows, provided voices for some of our favorite cartoon characters growing up and more. It’s hard to believe that the multifaceted actress, singer, author and comedian Andrea Martin only pursued acting as a hobby when she was a child. “I did children’s theater in Portland, Maine where I grew up,” Martin said. “As a young child, I was involved in Portland, Maine children’s theater and summer stock, but I honestly just thought of acting as a hobby. I mean, in those days, I wasn’t thinking about it as a career and just one thing led to another. I went to college and majored in drama and I got a job and then another job. It wasn’t like I plotted out anything.” Martin’s first major break was Second City Television or what is better known as SCTV, the popular Canadian television sketch comedy show that made its way to American airwaves from 1976-84. Fans of SCTV will most likely recall Martin’s portrayal of leopard-print-wearing television station manager Edith Prickley, the incomprehensible European immigrant Pirini Scleroso, organ saleswoman Edna Boil, feminist television show host Libby Wolfson and children’s entertainer Mrs. Falbo. “I’ve done musical comedies, such as South Pacific and Oklahoma!, in summer stock and I’ve done dinner theater in Toronto and they were all little comedic musical presentations, but until I got involved with Second City, which then turned into SCTV, I never did sketch comedy before or stand up or anything in that variety,” Martin explained. SCTV also featured the likes of comedians and actors John Candy, Dave Thomas, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Harold Ramis and Joe Flaherty, who at the time, were all still unknown. “I remember my glorious friends and the extraordinary laughter,” Martin said about her fellow cast members. “You know I’m sure there were challenges over the years because we had to produce an hour and a half worths of material a week, but we were just like-minded see ANDREA MARTIN on page 4A people that laughed at one another. FEATURE ANDREA MARTIN from page 3A kind around the holidays. For me the favorite part of the theater is the collaboration with the other actors. I’ve done one-woman shows and I’ve found them kind of lonely. I don’t like them as much and I’ve done many years of them, by the way. So I love the community aspect of it. This play, by the way, is all about community. It’s perfect.” On the big screen, most might also remember Martin playing Aunt Voula in the sleeper hit romantic comedy My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (2016). In the films, Martin starred alongside Nia Vardalos, John Corbett, Lainie Kazan and Michael Constantine. “My fondest memory from filming I guess would have to be the fact that we shot it in Toronto where I have a home,” Martin said. “I lived in Toronto for many years and I go back and forth a lot. I loved the fact that I knew where Greek Town was in Toronto. It was very familiar and I’d ride my bike to work. I guess it didn’t feel like a big project. We were all doing this for not very much money. We didn’t know where it was going to end up. It kind of felt like a little community; there’s that word again. We knew each other well.”

In 2014, Martin published her autobiography Lady Parts, which Martin said was a very challenging project for her to tackle. “I didn’t have any reservations when I signed the contract,” she said. “I had a lot of reservations when I started to write, oh my God. I don’t know how to not be truthful. It was very challenging to look back at my life and to really write something that came from my heart. Oftentimes, I thought maybe I’m revealing too much, but I kept going because it was the nature of the book, but it was a very difficult challenge. I
was so happy when I finished it and I was so proud of myself for finishing it. It was much more difficult than anything I’ve ever done actually.” For the past 15 years, Martin has also been a prominent spokesperson for the Children of Armenia Fund (COAF), which helps all of the children in Armenia achieve their full potential. COAF’s annual gala is on Dec. 14 at Cipriani in Manhattan. “It’s the first year that I haven’t been able to host it, but I got involved with COAF because I’m all Armenian,” Martin explained. “My mother and father were Armenian, my grandparents came here to escape the genocide in the early 1920s. I was asked to do this 15 years ago and I didn’t really know much about the Children of Armenia Fund, but the minute I met the chairman or the creator of COAF Dr. Garo Armen, I knew I wanted to be a part of it. It was a totally transparent charity that’s revitalized villages in Armenia that were left deserted by the Soviet regime. We built schools and hospitals, it is extraordinary what we’ve been
able to do in a country that has had a lot of political struggles, let me put it that way. The fact that we’ve been able to implement all these changes for villages and school children is extraordinary. I’m really proud to be a part of it.” So what’s next for Martin in the new year that is quickly approaching? “I don’t have any plans,” Martin said. “I normally know what I’m doing. I’m finishing A Christmas Carol in January. Something will happen because it always does and I don’t have the angst that I used to when I was younger. I just trust that something will be out there. Right now, I’m in the moment, I’m enjoying this play and I’m just taking in all the gratitude of doing it and I’m so happy that we can connect with audiences every night and bring the spirit of Christmas alive in such a gentle way.” A Christmas Carol plays through Jan. 5 at the Lyceum Theatre, 149 W. 45th St., NYC. A Joyful Blizzard Slava’s Snowshow returns to Broadway for eight weeks only BY KIMBERLY DIJKSTRA kdijkstra@antonmediagroup.com
Though the weather outside is frightful, the weather inside the Stephen Sondheim Theatre is purely delightful while Slava’s Snowshow is in production. Unlike any other show on Broadway, the theatrical classic creates a fantastical winter setting and stirs up a childlike wonder in all who experience it. Developed by performance artist Slava Polunin in his home country of Russia, Slava’s Snowshow first made its debut in America in 2004 and became an instant sensation in New York City. Those who witnessed it back then are thrilled to see it return for a limited engagement ending on Jan. 5. Polunin and his cohorts utter not a word while
on stage, but speak a universal language that everyone can understand. They take the art of clowning to a new level with moments of curiosity, poetry, wistfulness and humor. The special effects make a trip to the theatre a true adventure. From simulated rain, to fog, to a breathtaking blizzard, the snow show is
remarkably interactive in a way everyone, young and old, will find magical. Slava and the cast don’t rely on the slapstick variety of clowning. Instead they use effective optical illusions that immerse you in a dreamlike world where snow is plentiful and your imagination can run wild. Every moment is completely captivating and conjures the holiday spirit without
using traditional holiday imagery. The troupe of clowns, in their peculiar costumes and painted faces, improvise scenes and interact with the audience in unexpected ways each night, allowing you to dive deeper into the surreal atmosphere they create.

LIRR Increases Safety For Grade Crossings BY MARCO SCHADEN mschaden@antonmediagroup.com
L
ong Island Rail Road (LIRR) President Phil Eng and officials of the LIRR were recently on hand at the Willis Avenue grade crossing in Mineola to show the improving safety features provided by the transportation system. Between June 2017 and May 2018, there were 21 car-on-the-track incidents at LIRR grade crossings. “Unauthorized rail crossing is a serious safety concern,” State Senator Kevin Thomas, who represents the Sixth District, said. “With the rise of the GPS, many drivers were inadvertently driving onto the railroad tracks after misunderstanding their GPS directions, causing delays and risking lives. I commend the LIRR for quickly identifying the issue and working to implement effective solutions.” The LIRR has recently partnered with Waze and Google to better identify rail crossings on their GPS systems and show them as hazards— all 296 LIRR grade crossings are now listed on Waze as hazards. “I am pleased that our efforts to constantly implement and innovate our safety methods has had a dramatic effect on eliminating incidents at grade crossing,” Eng said. “While we can’t control driver behavior, we continue to be proactive and keep our trains moving safely. We have truly benefited from our partnership with Waze, and we are proud to pave the way for railroad across the country in using this collaborative technology.” The LIRR has also installed flexible, four-feet high reflective delineators, as well as extended roadway marking and additional reflective devices to better alert drivers, who may be driving in darkness or inclement weather. “Under the leadership of President Phil Eng, the LIRR has set a national standard for safety,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said. “I commend the LIRR for their innovative leadership and new partnerships, which have dramatically improved

safety and visibility for our motorists at historically dangerous railroad crossings.” Between June 2017 and May 2018, there were 401 train delays due to cars inadvertently turning on tracks where delineators were already in place. By May 2019, that number has dropped to 57, resulting in 138 fewer delays for trains on the LIRR. “The Long Island Rail Road’s

delineator and Waze’s integration is a great example of how technology and innovation really work to make train travel safer for the people of Long Island,” Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said. “I have been a proponent of investing in modernization across LIRR in order to improve safety, alleviate congestion and strengthen the future of Long Island’s economy.”
The Willis Avenue grade crossing will be replaced during the LIRR’s third-track project. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the ground breaking of the project in September 2018. The third track plan, which costs $2.6 billion, will have about 50 individual projects, will modernize almost 10 miles on the LIRR’s main line between Floral Park and Hicksville.

o one at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) or any elected official, including Governor Andrew Cuomo, Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, ever wants to talk about the real costs for the LIRR’s east side access to Grand Central Terminal. These may be closer to $15 billion, rather than $11.2 billion. The original full funding grant agreement between the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and the MTA was approved in December 2006. The $2.63 billion of FTA grant funding remains unchanged (virtually all of which has already been spent) with the MTA serving as a local sponsor to cover the more than $6 billion in cost overruns. Ten years later, in August 2016, the FTA amended agreement was signed off by both the FTA and the MTA. After years of negotiations, the MTA and FTA agreed on a deal that would reflect the current cost and schedule. Both the cost went up and first revenue day of service slipped once

Some of the indirect “readiness projects” include, but are not limited to, financing charges ($600 million), Larry Penner additional capacity improvements at Jamaica LIRR station ($450 million), along with numerous capital improvements east of Jamaica. They include construction of several thousand additional parking spots for new riders more. Taxpayers could pay $12 billion in direct costs for this project. capital projects. Without all of the above, the LIRR will not be able to achieve 100 percent utilization of this investment, including the promise of 24 trains per hour during peak service period. The twoyear delay from 2022-24 in delivery of 88 M-9A electric cars will impact new ESA service. The LIRR will have to continue using M-3 cars from 1992, which as they continue to age, may become less reliable. There is no guarantee that all 202 new M-9 cars will be in service by March 2021. It remains to be seen if the LIRR will have sufficient peak and spare electric cars to deliver on the promised 50 percent increase in service upon completion of both main line third track and ESA. iracle on 34th Street, the classic Christmas film, has been adapted into a musical that can be seen on the stage of the Argyle Theatre in Babylon Village through Dec. 29. Written by Meredith Wilson, known for his hit musical The Music Man, the show tells the tale of a skeptical little girl who doubts the existence of Santa Claus. When the real Kris Kringle is inadvertently hired to play Santa in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, he must convince Susan and her mother that he’s the genuine article. “Miracle on 34th Street takes place between Thanksgiving Day and Christmas,” said Tiffan Borelli, who plays Doris Walker, a divorced, single mother who has become rather cynical about the supposed magic of Christmas. “We find her brokenhearted. ADVICE
How To Cope With A Potential Drinking Problem
Hi James, I think it is very brave to reach out and ask for help. I am wondering if the alcohol is really making you feel better, or could it be numbing those feelings you might not want to deal with? Retirement is a life-changing decision, and it is not uncommon that such a life transition will create some uncomfortable feelings. You now have a lot more time available, which is new for you and could at times be difficult to tolerate. Feelings of boredom, not feeling productive, missing adult conversation and routine are some of the issues that have been expressed from those clients I have worked with who have retired. With those challenging feelings we want to come up with some coping mechanisms to help combat those thoughts that may lead you to drinking the alcohol. I want you to think about what the alcohol is doing for you. What is its purpose? Then, you might understand more of what you are needing in this new phase of life and whether or not it is really the alcohol. I always recommend practicing good self-care, which is defined as any activity that we do with the intention of taking care of our physical, mental and emotional health. It takes some effort, but it feels better and works more effectively than any substance out there. Some examples of self-care may include balanced eating, exercise, reaching out to friends to socialize, taking some time for yourself to do the things you enjoy and seeking out professional assistance if needed. There is so much support out there, such as Alcoholics Anonymous individual and group therapy, as well as sober retreats. Even your own family can be a source of support if you allow them to be. James, we always want to examine how often you are drinking and how much, whether you have built up a tolerance to the alcohol and whether you might experience withdrawal symptoms once you discontinue the alcohol use. If you decide to seek assistance, that type of information will help both you and the professionals decide what the best modality of treatment would be for you. Wishing you the best.

he Seasons at the Nassau County Museum of Art, located at 1 Museum Dr. in Roslyn, explores the creative response of artists to the spirit of the four seasons, brought to you by perennial favorite co-curators Franklin Hill Perrell and Debbie Wells of Artful Circle. This exhibition is complete with a full harvest of paintings, sculpture,
photography and design. From traditional landscapes to avant-garde works, The Seasons offers a fanciful experience of every season and an endearing look at holidays through the eyes of artists across the past century. As you explore the galleries, see how artists have responded to color, texture and shapes from nature. Feel the flow
of the art depicting one season to the next, just as they do throughout the year. It is a great opportunity for celebrating the joy of the four seasons though a variety of lively depictions in styles. Be sure to record your visit on social media—there are some great spots for taking photos. Key artists in the exhibition include: • Painters: Marc Chagall, Grandma

What’s new for interiors in 2020 BY KIMBERLY DIJKSTRA kdijkstra@antonmediagroup.com
A
s we near the end of 2019, it’s natural to start to think about the new year, and, in fact, the new decade arriving in just a few weeks. With the start of a new year comes a slew of changes, from making personal wellness resolutions and working on improving relationships, to reaching for new career goals and updating the wardrobe. It is also the perfect time to refresh the interior of your home. According to local designers, there are quite a few fun design trends on the horizon that will reflect a new attitude for your home in the coming year. Here’s what the experts have to say.
Pastels and Jewel Tones
Informed by high fashion runways, pastels and jewel tones are the hues to keep an eye out for in 2020. “The juxtaposition of
pastels and jewel tones seems to have been all the rage these last few seasons,” said Kim Radovich whose eponymous firm offers a multitude of services, including space planning, consulting, custom furniture design, architectural detailing, Feng Shui and sustainable design. Put it into action with the stroke of a paint brush. First Light, a soft, rosy blush color, is Benjamin Moore’s color of the year.
colors, fabrics and materials. “Surround the sofa with a modern, trendsetting coffee table, mix in some classic glass side tables and a pair of gorgeous artisan quality ceramic table lamps, and your room is complete and beautiful.”
Traditional with a Twist
Light and Creamy Whites
This winter and for the upcoming new year, freshen up your living space with light, creamy whites. “Nothing is prettier or more striking than a stylish white sofa—always classic and absolutely stunning,” said Nanette Baker, who specializes in creating functional, comfortable, contemporary spaces with an emphasis on
(Images courtesy of Nanette Baker/Ethan Allen)
Known for blending timeless elegance with modern sensibilities in her designs, Radovich predicts the popularity of traditional aesthetics for 2020. “This happens every 10 years or so when the pendulum swings back,” she said. “Now, however, most interiors have an element of surprise— so in a very traditional space you might find the modern twist of contemporary furnishings or a mixture of many different styles composed ever so cleverly.” Word to the wise: This design is hard to pull off. “This all works as long as
it’s done with the curated eye and an understanding of the decorative arts kind of furniture genres—not something to be taken on by the novice decorator.”
Odds and Ends
Americana is here to stay. Think: Palm Beach meets old Hollywood flair with statement-making palm leaf patterns and rattan wood furnishings. “There’s nothing more wonderful than thoughtfully curated collections of art or treasures one has collected from their travels,” Radovich said. Kim Radovich Interiors is located at 50 North New York Ave., Suite 10, Huntington Bay. For more information, visit www.kimradovichinteriors. com or call 631-868-0595. Spruce Up Your Guest Room For The Holidays The holidays are typically a time for lots of merriment and cheer. They also often include an abundance of guests visiting your home, which means it’s time to get the guest room ready for family and friends who’ll be spending time with you this season. Consider these easy tips to help transform your guest room into a comfortable and restful retreat.
Home is Where the Hairdryer Is
While fancy furniture and decor are nice, a gracious guest room is about
hospitality and anticipating the needs of your guests. Think about useful necessities provided in hotel rooms—a reading lamp, an alarm clock, fresh sheets and a hair dryer. Simply add them to the guest bedroom or bathroom to create a thoughtfully appointed home away from home.
Comfort is King
it has lumps and bumps or is more than seven years old, it’s time to replace it. For an easy solve, the sleep specialists at a retailer like Mattress Firm can help you find the best mattress for your needs.
Few things make guests feel more comfortable and cared for than being able to get a good night’s sleep, and that can start with your mattress. Focus on Functional The guest room mattress is ofBecause your guests may ten overlooked because you’re not conform to the same not the one sleeping on it. If

Clean and Clear
The first step in creating a welcoming getaway for guests is giving the room a good cleaning. If your guest room has become a catch-all for items you’ve been meaning to organize throughout the year, the arrival of guests can serve as the perfect motivator to take care of the task. For a painless approach, start the process a few weeks in advance, devoting 15 minutes a day to clutter-busting and cleaning.

Better Care For Men And Women BY JOSEPH WOLKIN

wellness startup is taking the beauty community by storm. This holiday season, modern wellness brands Hims and Hers are working to bring healthy skin and hair to all. Hims and Hers, based out of San Francisco, launched less than three years ago and has since expanded to offer products for healthy skin. Now, they have the perfect gift set for both men and women. “We started Hims and Hers to eliminate stigmas around health and wellness issues, and break down barriers for people when it comes to obtaining quality healthcare,” Dr. Adrian Rawlinson, vice president of medical affairs for Hims and Hers, said. “In many cases, patients are discouraged from taking care of themselves due to high copays, drug prices, long wait times and an overall lack of accessibility.”
The organization recently unveiled a plethora of products, including wrinkle cream, moisturizer, morning glow cream, high-quality shampoo, as well as a biotin gummy vitamin for men. For women, the brand now has a complete hair kit, featuring minoxidil topical solution, shampoo,
conditioner and biotin gummy vitamins. While the brand started out by catering to the needs of men, it expanded last year to create a series of products for women. A large part of the organization’s goal is to create preventative solutions for consumers
through telemedicine. Additionally, the hair loss treatments provided by Hims have essentially went viral, creating a safe and easy treatment for those who simply want their hair back. For more information, visit www. forhims.com and www.forhers.com.

Stave Off The Flu
Northwell doctor shares expert tips on flu prevention BY CYNDI ZAWESKI
czaweski@atonmediagroup.com
T
his year’s flu season is fully underway, but it is not too late to protect yourself and your family from the virus. Fever, chills, a sore throat and a runny nose are a few of the symptoms associated with coming down with influenza, but it could be even more serious for those most vulnerable, such as small children, the elderly and the chronically ill. Northwell infectious disease specialist Dr. Bruce E. Hirsch shared these prevention tips to help you stave off sickness.
Get A Flu Shot
It’s not too late to get this year’s vaccine. While it’s possible to contract the flu anytime of year, activity often begins to increase in the fall and peaks between December and February, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Hirsch said the flu shot—which is available free of charge at many pharmacies and medical centers across Long Island—is the best method of prevention. “ The vaccine is important,” he said. “We encourage people to get the flu vaccine even late into the season.” Hirsch noted that one essential way to protect others from getting the flu is to prevent ourselves from transmitting it by getting the vaccine. The flu is highly contagious, and the best way to protect everyone, especially those who are most susceptible, is to vaccinate those around them. “By you getting the vaccine yourself, you’re helping people around you avoid sickness,” he said.
Wash Your Hands
In addition to getting vaccinated,
frequent hand washing and use of hand sanitizer are among the best things you can do to lower your risk of contracting the flu, Hirsch said. People are contagious with the flu a day before they start to have symptoms so practicing good hand hygiene on a daily basis puts you ahead.
Avoid Touching Your Face
Along the same lines, touching your face as little as possible is another key element of prevention. The flu is spread through the air and by touching infected surfaces. Contracting the virus is as easy as inadvertently touching an infected surfaces and then touching your hand to your eyes, nose or mouth, Hirsch said. Another tip, “Cough into your
elbow instead of your hand,” he said. “You don’t touch surfaces with your elbow, it is a way of containing the virus if you’re sneezing or coughing.”
Use Bleach Wipes
Disinfecting frequently touched surfaces at home, work and school, especially when someone is sick with the flu, can drastically cut down risk of infection. Hirsch recommends keeping bleach wipes handy to sanitize high traffic areas easily.
Practice Health Habits
Another benefit of following a healthy lifestyle is staving off the flu. Clocking in the recommended six to eight hours of sleep a night, being physically active and managing stress
gives your body a healthy baseline for fighting the virus. “Common sense health practices are important for reducing your risk of getting the flu,” he said. Nutrition is also key. Diets that are rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein and healthy fats provide a wide array of nutrients and antioxidants that can help boost the immune system. Fiber, Hirsch said, is another dietary staple for flu prevention. One study, published in the health journal Immunity, showed that dietary fiber increased survival rates in influenza-infected mice by setting the immune system at a healthy level of responsiveness. One final note from Hirsch, “Be a hero by staying home when you’re sick to avoid getting others sick.”

Preventing Hepatitis A
utbreaks of hepatitis A continue to be reported throughout the country. Since 2016, there have been more than 28,000 cases associated with single site exposures in 30 states, resulting in more than 17,000 hospitalizations and 288 deaths. Sources of the outbreaks have been traced to contaminated blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, lettuce, raw fish and even a flight attendant. Hepatitis A is the most common cause of acute viral hepatitis in the United States. Anyone, regardless of age, who has not been previously infected or who has not been vaccinated against hepatitis A can become infected and ill from the hepatitis A. The older you are, the sicker you can become. Hepatitis A is transmitted through the fecal-oral route. The virus enters the body through the mouth, multiplies in the body and is passed in the feces. The virus can then be carried on an infected person’s hands and can be spread by direct contact, or by consuming food or drink that has been handled by the individual. This is the
THE SPECIALIST David Bernstein, MD
reason restaurant food handlers are frequent vectors of disease transmission. In some cases, it can be spread by sexual contact or by consuming contaminated water or food (e.g., raw shellfish, fruits and vegetables). The symptoms of hepatitis A may include fatigue, poor appetite, fever and nausea. Some people might also have vomiting and abdominal cramping. Urine may darken and then yellowing of the eyes or jaundice may appear. The symptoms usually present themselves 15 to 50 days after exposure. Most often, the symptoms appear within four weeks. Most people recover in a few weeks without any complications. Infants and young children tend
to have very mild symptoms and are less likely to develop jaundice than are older children and adults. Hepatitis A can be easily transmitted from one person to another in homes, schools and work places. The contagious period begins about two weeks before the symptoms appear which is concerning. By the time jaundice occurs, most people are probably no longer contagious. There are no special medicines or antibiotics that treat hepatitis A. Generally, providers will recommend rest, good nutrition, fluids, and treatment of symptoms. A small number of people might need to be hospitalized for the illness. The good news is that once an individual has recovered from hepatitis A, they cannot get it again and poses no health risk to others. Hepatitis A can be prevented with careful hand washing after using the toilet and before eating or preparing food. People should avoid eating raw shellfish taken from potentially contaminated waters. Infected people should not handle foods during the contagious period.
There (Photo source: infectiousdiseaseadvisor.com) is a vaccine against hepatitis A that is effective in preventing HAV infection. Earlier this year, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices voted to update recommendations on the use of vaccines to protect against hepatitis A. The committee voted unanimously to recommend that all children and adolescents between the ages of 2 and 18 who have not previously received the hepatitis A vaccine should receive a catch-up vaccination. Vaccination is also recommended for travelers to countries with high rates of illness, for anyone with chronic liver disease, for men who have sex with men and for anyone using illegal drugs. I would recommend universal vaccination for anyone not previously exposed.

Children, like Samantha, see us differently. Because we care for them differently. Samantha was born with a severe kidney condition, which put her at continuous risk of infection. But Dr. Palmer monitored her and provided the best care throughout her early years, eventually performing a specialized surgery that cured her.

Dealing With The H
T
he holiday season is in full swing and food is abundant during this time of year. Holiday parties can start to fill up your calendar and tend to be extremely food-focused. Plus, food-pushers are in full force this time of year. A food-pusher is a person who, although he or she may have the best intentions, persistently pushes you to eat or drink something decadent. The holidays are a time where food-pushing is not only accepted, but it is almost expected by our loved ones. If you absolutely love the dish that they are persuading you to eat, by all means eat it and sensibly indulge. But if the dish that this food-pusher is persuading you to eat or drink is something that you don’t want to partake in, then
CHOOSING HEALTH STEFANI SASSOS
there are some strategies and responses to help you avoid giving in. Honesty Is Always The Best Policy Although this may not be the easiest option, you should always make your best effort to be honest with that food-pusher. If they are supportive of your health goals, try explaining that you are making an important lifestyle change. This strategy
can sometimes work with the right person if they respect your journey and choices. Never forget that honesty is the best policy, and expressing your health goals may even inspire that food-pusher to make some healthy choices. Blame It On The Doctor Or Dietitian Some food-pushers can get really offended if you don’t want to eat their food, even if you explain to them that you are trying to making some healthy lifestyle changes. Instead, you can put the blame on us. Saying that your doctor or dietitian advised you to limit sugar, salt, etc. can make that food-pusher take your concerns more seriously. This is a pretty easy way out and something that a food-pusher may have a hard time arguing with.
You’ll Save It For Later Let that food-pusher know you are too full now, but would love to have a piece of whatever they are serving later. Stalling can help that food pusher simply forget to pack you some of that pumpkin pie. If they do remember to send you home with some treats, don’t be afraid to get rid of them. A holiday should last a day, not a week, month or year. Beware of leftovers lingering around the house for too long after a holiday as these can be tempting and might throw off your healthy habit.

New Study Aims To Advance OCD Treatment How The Bio Behavioral InstituteShe in Great is making wasNeck treated for strikes on a misunderstood illness neuralgia— trigeminal
yesterday.
BY CYNDI ZAWESKI
czaweski@antonmediagroup.com
“OCD” is one of the most commonly misused medical terms. Often used dismissively to describe someone who keeps their items arranged in perfect order or is considered a “clean freak,” Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a serious mental illness that impacts more than two million Americans, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. The symptoms include intrusive thoughts that make everyday life a struggle. There is still so much to learn about the often misunderstood disorder. At the Bio Behavioral Institute in Great Neck, Dr. Fugen Neziroglu and her dedicated team have been studying OCD for more than four decades. The acclaimed institute is now teaming up with Bio Haven Pharmaceuticals to study a new medicine to treat OCD. We sat down with Neziroglu to shed some light on OCD and the important research being done at The Bio Behavioral Institute.
Q A
What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and how does it impact those who suffer? Most people when they think of OCD think of someone washing their hands a lot or someone who keeps double checking doors, appliances, lights, their work, email, etc. However, OCD can take on many forms such as emotional contamination where you avoid someone or their belongings because you are angry with them and you think they are contaminated; health anxiety such as worrying about your heart, breathing and repeating things over and over again.
Q A
How long has The Bio Behavioral Institute been researching OCD treatments? The Bio Behavioral Institute has been studying OCD for more than 40 years. Our work has been both in cognitive behavior therapy as well as in medications. My husband, Jose Anibal Yaryura Tobias, brought Anafranil/Clomipramine the first medication for OCD, to the United States and we did our first double blind placebo study in 1972. We hypothesized that OCD may be a chemical disorder and measured a substance in our body called

serotonin (a chemical that is sometimes called the happy chemical because it contributes to well-being) in OCD and non-OCD patients. We published our results in 1974, and then in 1977 put forth the serotonergic hypothesis for OCD. Since then, we have had almost all the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). In 1989, we also demonstrated, with National Institute of Mental Health’s help, that behavioral therapy can also modify serotonin.
Q A
What methods does The Bio Behavioral Institute use to treat OCD? Evidence-based treatment for OCD is exposure and response prevention, a form of cognitive behavior therapy and SSRI or serotonin– norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI) medications.
Q A
What is an SSRI and why are some OCD patients unsatisfied with taking it? SSRI is a category of anti-depressants that target serotonin levels in the body. Most give about a 30% reduction in symptoms and should be combined with cognitive behavior therapy. Patients may respond only to a certain level and need another medication to boost the efficacy of the SSRI. This is why we are now studying a medication that works in a different pathway in the brain.
Q A
What are you hoping to learn from this new study with Bio Haven Pharmaceuticals? Bio Haven is the pharmaceutical company that has designed the study and that provides us with
the medication. I am really excited years thereafter. because this new medication works in Who can participate in the the glutamine pathway and it increasstudy? es a substance called glutamate. e’s the mascot for Team Israel’s Olympic baseball team. He’s been seen on the hit TV series Shark Tank. Now, he’s entering your homes. The Mensch on a Bench has rapidly become one of the most popular gift items for Jewish children during the holiday of Hanukkah, and for good reasons. It is one of the most accurate representations of a stereotypical old Jewish man, and in a good way. The mensch first went viral when Neal Hoffman appeared on Shark Tank in 2014. He’s a 12-inch buddy, based off Moshe the Mensch in the book, Mensch on a Bench, written by Hoffman and Rob Foster. Now, instead of feeling left out when kids see an Elf on a Shelf, they can get excited to bring home their own little mensch. And since that episode came out, the brand has blown up. Fresh for Hanukkah this year is the talking version of the Mensch on a Bench. On sale for $19.99, it’s the perfect gift to give someone, young or old, during the Festival of Lights. The talking mensch has plenty of phrases to keep you entertained throughout the year, too. He shouts out more than 20 Yiddish words and phrases, enough to bring some nostalgia to your home. have enjoyed their time with the Mensch on a Bench. Not only is the talking mensch available, but there’s a whole family, or mishpacha in Hebrew. The company now has the Mitzvah Moose, Ask Bubbe, Ask Papa and Hannah the Hanukkah Hero. Ask Bubba is labeled as a “magic eight-ball that meets Jewish grandmother,” thanks to all of her random phrases. The same can be said about the Jewish grandfather, Ask Papa. The Mitzvah Moose might be the most adorable member of this cuddly family. The blue moose even comes with an inspiring 17page story. Holiday Wreath-Making A step-by-step guide for homemade holiday decor BY CYNDI ZAWESKI
N
czaweski@antonnews.com
othing says home for the holidays like a welcoming wreath on the front door. This year, put a homemade touch on this classic holiday decor. Mary Schlotter and Krishtia McCord, the creative mother-daughter team behind floral design company Harbor Homestead & Co., specialize in making stunning wreaths that incorporate fresh, fragrant greens such as cedar, pine and juniper with a selection of berries, pine cones and other natural materials. “Pine cones, berries and other natural elements [can be added] to embellish,” McCord said. “We like to accent with dried orange slices or small lady apples this year.” The result is simple yet sophisticated natural look that can be customized based on personal taste. Schlotter and McCord, whose floral designs have appear at the White House and the Vanderbilt Museum, shared their step-by-step guide to crafting holiday wreaths. For a wreath appropriately sized to fit your front door, you will need: • Wire wreath frame, 16 to 18 inches in size • Floral wire ribbon of your choice. McCord recommends trying a color or pattern that speaks to your aesthetic. Aqua, moss green, plum, orange or black and white patterns offer a unique look and will look just as festive as typical red or green, she added. Above materials can be purchased from a craft store. • Forage for a variety of fresh greens. A mix of varieties like cedar, pine, fir and juniper are good options, McCord said. You can find many of these in your yard. Supplement with bunches from your local garden center.
Steps:
• Begin by securing your wire to your wreath frame. A simple knot followed by wrapping the wire around the frame two to three times is best, McCord said. • Create your first bundle of greens. A handful of a few varieties about 6-inches in length. “Imagine you are designing a miniature bouquet when making your bundles,” McCord said. • Place berries on top of your bundles if using them. “It is good to use them in every other bundle to create a pattern,” McCord said. • Lay your bundle parallel but angled slightly outward on top of your wreath frame and wrap your wire around the base of the bundle and around the wreath frame three times, securing it to the frame. Repeat, moving clockwise around the wreath frame with each bundle overlapping the last slightly so that you cover your mechanics as you go. • Accent with your chosen natural elements by wiring them
onto your wreath. • Secure ribbon either by tying a simple bow or cut a length to hang it with. Harbor Homestead & Co. hosts a variety of floral design workshops, including wreath-making classes, on Long Island throughout the year. Visit www.harborhomestead. com for a full class schedule.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). Working out the next move will involve a Venn diagram-type process of figuring out the overlaps between what you want, what they want, and what is doable in terms of resources. It’s a lot, but the process gets fun once you figure out the goal that makes sense. This is the start of something incredible. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Life is messy. If you accidentally reveal your mess, others will either relate to it and be repelled because it hits too close to home or relate to it and be attracted for the same reason. Knowing this, you might opt for messy honesty on purpose as a method of weeding out the weak and keeping your support circle strong.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Some situations depend on one party acting as the confident authority so the other can relax. Performances and visits to the doctor come to mind. As for the rest of life, a state of not knowing is better for everyone involved. To know is incurious. Not knowing gets results that knowing can’t possibly. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Each day has two witching hours; the hour the day sky turns to night, and two hours before bed. These are the times you’ll be most susceptible to temptation, and so they are the ideal times for creature comforts. Seek healthy ways to soothe and relax. Build an arsenal of delights and solutions. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You’re so hardworking that sometimes you think of hobbies as a luxury. It could also be argued that hobbies are absolutely essential to your well-being and that they help you do your job better, allowing you to contribute a well-rounded point of view and dig in with the vitality of a contented soul. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You are interested, so you ask and entertain the questions of others without judging whether or not they are good questions. A simple, childish query can root out the most difficult and complicated part of a problem. You will gladly release your need to be smart in hopes of actually gaining knowledge. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). People don’t take risks unless what they have to gain is so much better than what they stand to lose that it’s a no-brainer. At that point, logic heeds way to impulse. Your job will be to make the deal so sweet that the logical mind is either satisfied by the prospects or overwhelmed by a desire to seize a juicy offering. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Empathy isn’t just something you do because it’s kind. It’s also a skill for the cunning. If you can’t feel where another person is coming from, then it is not so easy to know where are your leverage points. How can you strategize without understanding what the other person wants? Empathy will be your superpower. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You’ll be aiming your team toward shared outcomes. You’ll need examples at the ready that people can follow. Spend time on this, as it will make your work much easier if you create something so interesting and attractive to others that they will work toward it out of desire and inspiration instead of obligation. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). This week will keep bringing you reminders of how feelings change and moments pass, and their impermanence is the same whether the feeling is good or bad. Most impulses are over inside of two minutes today, so it’s important to act when it’s good and press pause to wait it out when it’s bad. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You won’t notice the harsh feelings you harbor until they are triggered. Someone does that thing they always do, and you react. It’s a gift -an opportunity to reflect. You’ll move naturally toward a realization about what’s going on here and then work out how to do it a little differently so you can move forward in grace. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). You’ll do what helps. You’ll do what doesn’t. Then you’ll do the thing that proves the maturity of your mind and the depth of your heart; you’ll keep the helping behavior and lose the other without judgment or condemnation, noting only that it’s “not for me right now.” This happens gracefully and without drama.

There are plenty of new NICE buses that will be driving across Nassau County. (Photo courtesy of Nassau Inter-County Express) City and includes an advanced brake monitoring system, back-up camera, HD interior and exterior video surveillance and digital rear signage to alert drivers when a vehicle is about to stop. But that’s not all. NICE’s Able-Ride service also added 14 new 22-foot Ford E-350 StarCraft vehicles. These smaller buses can transport up to 10 riders and three mobility devices. They also added five 26-foot Ford E-450 buses. “Riders will find the new vehicles roomy and very comfortable, not only for them but also for their Guide Dogs,” Sudesh DeSilva, director of paratransit at NICE, said. “In addition,
our customers using a mobility device will appreciate the extra space to easily maneuver themselves without assistance from an operator.” NICE also has a new smartphone application called the My Transit Manager by Transdev, which was unveiled in October. The app lets riders monitor their trips, all while they are on the way to their destination. The My Transit Manager app also enables riders to see where their vehicle is, and they can receive alerts about the bus’ status. And, yes, the app is free for iOS and Android users. “This new, accessible platform will keep riders updated down to the
minute, and provides peace of mind for our paratransit customers and their loved ones” DeSilva said. NICE bus services roughly 90,000 passengers a day, operating as the official public transportation agency of Nassau County. Able-Ride currently services nearly 10,000 customers, providing roughly 26,000 trips a month, and 320,000 trips a year on average to people with disabilities. This door-to-door service is designed to help make Nassau County accessible for riders who are unable to take advantage of the fixed-route bus system. To learn more about NICE, visit www.nicebus.com.

assau County’s buses are about to start looking nicer. That’s because the Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE) just unveiled 29 new vehicles to its fleet, including 10 compressed natural gas (CNG) ones. “These fleet additions will enhance efficiency and improve on-time performance across Nassau’s fixed-route system, especially during rush-hour,” Jack Khzouz, CEO of NICE, said. “The vehicles are a much-needed addition to our fleet, bringing it to 278 fixed-route vehicles, which accommodate roughly 445 scheduled trips a day on average.” These new buses were added to NICE’s fleet throughout the second and third quarter of 2019, largely thanks to funding by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), which was matched by local and New York State budgets. The CNG buses will seat 35 passengers, with up to two mobility devices. The bus, a 40-foot Xcelsior XN40 New Flyer of America, is used in New York

Here’s hoping that we all survived Thanksgiving dinner with talks of politics, meeting new girlfriends and boyfriends, arguing over who does the dishes all the while stuffing ourselves with green bean casserole. Ali affected my classmates. He was now the sentimental favorite. Frazier had his fans. Frazier’s victory wasn’t a surprise. Ali was still a little rusty from his earlier suspension from the game. Ali, however, won the rematch and defended his crown against Frazier in the legendary 1975 “Thriller in Manila.” Frazier died in 2011 at age 67. Ali, suffering from Parkinson’s disease, died in 2016 at age 74. Mickey Mantle When Mickey died in 1995, then-Yankee skipper Buck Showalter noted that as a Little Leaguer, he wore number 7, Mantle’s number. Well, who didn’t? Mantle was the greatest switch-hitter in history. As a youngster, I thought: This makes perfect sense. Why don’t they all switch-hit? Game 3 of the 1964 World Series between the Yankees and the St. Louis Cardinals was a pitchers’ duel, Jim Bouton vs. Curt Simmons. It was tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the ninth. Mantle led off against Barney Schultz. “If he gives me that knuckleball, I’m goin’ hit it out of here,” Mantle told Elston Howard. (Reader, repeat that line with an Oklahoma drawl.) And he did. Connecticut. Or maybe it would still be in orbit. Jack Nicklaus “Take a good look at him, lad. He’s the most famous man in the world.” So said an elderly Scotsman to a young fan as Jack Nicklaus warmed up for the 1972 British Open. That year, Nicklaus had a chance to win the Grand Slam in golf: the Masters, the U.S. Open, the British Open and the PGA. He won both the Masters and the U.S. Open before falling short in the British tourney. Nicklaus was the most intense and competitive athlete ever. He hit with power off the tee, but his iron game was the key. His approach shots were a sight to behold: The ball would sail towards the green and then bounce within inches of the cup—hole after hole. The memories still give me goosebumps. When the year 2000 arrived, there was a debate on who was the athlete of the century: Babe Ruth or Michael Jordan? Or maybe Bill Russell. Nobody asked me, but I say: Give it to Fat Jack! No one played with his intensity. Nicklaus was the greatest professional athlete America has ever produced. To read more sports memories, visit www.longislandweekly.com
