Perfect Derek Klena is more than the golden boy in Jagged Little Pill BY KIMBERLY DIJKSTRA

agged Little Pill, the new Broadway musical featuring the music of Alanis Morissette and Glen Ballard and a book by Diablo Cody, is the perfect show to usher us into a new decade. It tackles nearly every topic that affects Americans today—from opioid addiction and sexual assault to gender identity and social activism, but it’s not just an “issues” show, according to actor Derek Klena, who plays Nick Healy. “There are lots of topical elements socially and politically, but Diablo has really just written in everything that we’re dealing with in our world today,” Klena said. “These are all super relevant topics that we need to be addressing, and Diablo has done an incredible job of streamlining them all into one cohesive plotline.” The show features every song from the groundbreaking 1995 album Jagged Little Pill, plus other songs from Morissette’s catalog and two original tunes, all cleverly woven into an original story about the Healy family, set in the modern day in an upper-middle class suburb in Connecticut. Wife and mother Mary Jane aka MJ (Elizabeth Stanley) hides a dependence on opioids, husband Steve (Sean Allan Krill) is a workaholic, adopted

daughter Frankie (Celia Gooding) deals with identity and relationship issues and son Nick tries to live up to his parents’ high expectations. “Nick is the seemingly golden boy son who is kind of at that crossroads between adolescence and adulthood,” said Klena. “He’s graduating from high school, he’s just gotten into Harvard, he seemingly has everything going for him, but he’s at that point where he’s discovering who he wants to be. He knows what his parents’ image of him is, he knows who he is in his parents’ eyes, but he’s kind of discovering who Nick wants to be as he takes this next step into adulthood and comes into his own.” Klena, who is best known for his roles in Dogfight, Wicked and Anastasia, has been involved in the show and developing the character

of Nick for the past two-and-a-half years. He played Nick in the out-oftown production at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, MA, last year, which enjoyed a record-breaking run and positive reviews. A few changes were made before opening night on Broadway, all beneficial for plot clarity and character development. “For Nick specifically, a big change that happened was Alanis’ iconic song ‘Perfect’ used to be in act two after Nick gets into a confrontation with his mother,” Klena explained. “Now that it’s in the first act and earlier in Nick’s story, it is helpful for me as an actor and for

the audience to understand Nick’s point of view before delving into his major conflict.” With the lyrics “Be a good boy / Try a little harder / You’ve got to measure up / Make me prouder,” it’s clear where Nick is coming from in this story, feeling pressure from his parents to be perfect. Klena said once the song was moved up, it was less emotionally driven and more about self-reflection and discovery. “When he realizes he worked his whole life for this very moment to get into Harvard, and to still be see JAGGED LITTLE PILL on page 4A

FEATURE JAGGED LITTLE PILL from page 3A feeling this yearning for something, it’s kind of a big shock to him,” Klena said. “‘Perfect’ acts as this bridge between him being this cookie cutter image of himself and taking a step out of the box and slowly becoming the man he wants to be.” He added that Morissette has called it an illuminating experience seeing her songs—“Perfect” and “Mary Jane,” which is sung by Steve—performed by men. “Everybody on our creative team, especially Diablo and Alanis, are so brilliant, so I feel like working on this project has been an embarrassment of riches, getting to work alongside all of them,” Klena said. Cody, who earned many accolades for her film Juno and has created television shows including United States of Tara and One Mississippi, was there “every step of the way,” Klena said. “We would just sit at the table and read through scenes with her and [director] Diane Paulus to hash out the story,” Klena said. “Alanis’ songs, in this piece, we try to honor them and shed light on them and do them justice through this original story that Diablo has crafted. Part of the development process was figuring out all those puzzle pieces in the story line that are

really going to let the songs shine.” He continued, “She was super open to change, and she loved this process and experience of working on a play because you get to go back and fiddle with things and you have a preview process [as opposed to] writing a film, there’s a draft and once you shoot it, there’s really no going back and reshooting because it’s just too expensive. She said it has been an amazing experience. To be able to be part of that and watch how happy she’s been with the process and to watch how ecstatic Alanis has been with how

we’ve interpreted her material. It’s been a dream.” Like many of us, Klena grew up listening to Alanis Morissette songs on the radio. “I was quite little when this album first came out, but growing up in Southern California, I spent a lot of hours in the car with my mom and I have distinct memories of driving by the beach and having ‘You Oughta Know’ playing or ‘Hand In My Pocket’ playing,” Klena said. “It wasn’t until getting involved in this project that I realized they are all on the same album. Now, I’m even more of a fan after getting to work with her and seeing how brilliant she is in the flesh.” “Uninvited,” a 1998 single, is put to use exquisitely in the musical and stands out to Klena as a favorite in the show. “It’s just such a powerful number listening to Elizabeth Stanley and Kathryn Gallagher sing it every night and how it’s staged,” Klena said, referring to the balletic exorcism with her inner demons Mary Jane and her alter ego (dancer Heather Lang) experience during that number. “And Tom Kitt’s arrangements—Alanis has even said that she wants to sing Tom’s arrangements in her concerts now, she’s like, ‘I can’t get these arrangements

out of my head. I love them.’” While every cast member is consistently excellent, a real highlight is Lauren Patten’s intense performance of “You Oughta Know,” which brings down the house every night. “Lauren is incredible,” Klena said. “A combination between her incredible performance and Alanis’ iconic song, I think it’s just the perfect apex of everything. It’s been exciting for audiences to lose it in that moment. Lauren Patten has gotten many a standing ovation.” The original two songs created for the musical—“Smiling” and “Predator”—fit right into the mix. “Smiling” lends itself to another uniquely staged scene featuring Mary Jane. Another strong addition, “Predator” is extremely effective, putting into words something women experience all the time. In a similar vein, “No,” a 2012 B-side resurrected for the musical, is an anthem with lyrics “What part of no do you not understand?” that tackle the topic of consent and call out rape culture. “[The sexual assault] storyline has been involved in the musical for a while, before the Kavanagh hearings and before the Me Too movement,” Klena said. “Those relevant events that have taken place over the past couple of years have only reinforced the team’s objective in wanting to take a stand and move it to the forefront.” “This show obviously connects with most of our audience members on some level because of how relatable it is,” Klena added. “We’re just trying to open up the conversation and have people see it in a different light and take it seriously. It’s my job tackling Nick to try to address that—that we can’t just be bystanders. It’s important that we take responsibility for our actions and also stand up for what’s right—not stand by and watch injustice happen.” See Jagged Little Pill at the Broadhurst Theatre, 235 W. 44th St., NYC. January Movie Previews The Informer (NR)

BY CHERYL WADSWORTH editorial@antonmediagroup.com

T

he New Year is here with a decade behind us and expectations and resolutions still new and being honored. The temperatures are frigid, NFL playoffs have begun and the stores haven’t missed a beat with Valentine hearts adorning every shelf. January is also known in the movie industry as a “dump month,” when studios release dozens of films they feel won’t do well and are surely not Oscar contenders. Throughout the years, this has proven true with some exceptions such as The Silence of the Lambs and Get Out. The following are a few releases that also may be the exception. You decide.

The Grudge (R)

A house is afflicted by a merciless ghost, who curses those who enter with a brutal death, in The Grudge. (Photo source: Facebook)

On Jan. 3, The Grudge premiered in theaters, written by Nicholas Pesce and starring Tara Westwood, Junko Bailey, David Lawrence Brown, Zoe Fish and Andrea Riseborough. The Grudge originated in Japan and in 2004, it was released in America as a remake. This film’s setting is the same time of that 2004 film. A house is afflicted by a merciless ghost who curses those who enter with a brutal death. This is a great horror movie to start off your new year. Please don’t hold a “grudge” if you don’t like it.

The Informer debuts on Jan. 10 and is directed by Andrea Di Stefano. Starring Ana de Armas, Rosamund Pike, Joel Kinnaman, Clove Owen and Common, this British thriller is based on the novel Three Seconds by Roslund/Hellstrom. An ex-convict and former special operations soldier is newly released from jail when he is forced to go back inside by crooked FBI handlers to act as a snitch to penetrate the mob’s drug trade in New York. When his cover is intentionally blown and his family is threatened, he must do everything he can to get out

Like A Boss stars an all-female lead cast.

Also on Jan. 10, Like a Boss opens in theaters, directed by Miguel Arteta and starring an all lead female cast of Rose Byrne, Salma Hayek and Tiffany Haddish. Two friends develop a successful beauty business with two very different personalities. When they succumb to an insurmountable amount of debt, they reach out to a rich patron to save their company. Unbeknownst to them, the benefactor steals their ideas for her own benefit. These three ladies are hilarious in this nice comedy to start the year off right.

Robert Downey Jr. stars in Dolittle. (Photo source: Facebook) Dolittle debuts in theaters on Jan. 17. Directed and written by Stephen Gaghan, this film stars none other than the fabulous Robert Downey Jr. in the title role, along with Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, Jessie Buckley and features the voices of Tom Holland, Emma Thompson and Ralph Fiennes. Based on the character created by Hugh Lofting, this movie

follows the eccentrically brilliant Dr. Dolittle approximately seven years after the death of his beloved wife. Now a recluse with only his animals to keep him company, he must leave the safety of his compound to find a cure for a gravely ill Queen Victoria. What happens next will keep you smiling all day. This is a great family movie.

Outbreak Linked To Pet Store Puppies BY KIMBERLY DIJKSTRA

Kkdijkstra@antonmediagroup.comk

T

he Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and public health officials in several states are investigating a multiple-state outbreak of drug-resistant Campylobacter jejuni infections linked to puppies purchased from pet stores. Thus far, at least 30 people have been infected with the outbreak strain of Campylobacter jejuni, with four hospitalizations reported. Epidemiologic and laboratory evidence indicates that contact with puppies, especially those at pet stores, is likely to be the source of this outbreak. “This Campylobacter jejuni strain is very rare,” Cindy Friedman, a lead investigator of the outbreak with the CDC, said. “Campylobacter is a really common cause of diarrhea in the United States and it causes about 1.5 million cases [each year]. This strain is multi-drug resistant and we see this strain less than 1 percent of the time.” Among the 24 people interviewed by the CDC, half were linked to Petland, a national pet store chain, and five were Petland employees. There are no Petland stores on Long Island and no New York infections have been reported thus far. However, on Dec. 18, the Nassau County SPCA seized nine puppies outside of Shake A Paw, a Hicksville pet store, and all puppies tested positive for one or more contagious diseases. A few displayed signs of airway infections and pneumonia. Puppy Mill Free Long Island, an organization that has vocally supported the “adopt, don’t shop” movement, has come out against Shake A Paw, as well as Nassau County SPCA Board President Gary Rogers, who seeks donations to care for the seized puppies. “The findings of the horrific health conditions of the animals seized solidifies everything Puppy Mill Free Long Island has been saying and we implore Mr. Rogers,” a spokesperson for Puppy Mill Free Long Island said. “Instead of raising funds, approach the Nassau County legislatures, along with State Senator Anna Kaplan, ask her to vote aye to S.4234/A.6298, which would prohibit the sale of dogs,

When antibiotics are used as a preventative measure instead of to treat a specific illness, antibiotic resistance becomes more prevalent. “It’s very concerning that this strain is resistant to all first-line antibiotics that are recommended to treat Campylobacter,” Friedman said. “It’s a small number of patients, but it’s a concern to clinicians. We have a limited supply of antibiotics.” The CDC doesn’t want to see this strain spread further. The agency is trying to contain the problem by communicating with pet owners, pet store workers, the pet store companies implicated and the industry itself. “We work with those groups to try and recommend Nine puppies were seized by the Nassau County strategies to reduce inapproSPCA outside of Shake A Paw pet store in priate antibiotic use, to [work Hicksville. TAX ADVICE

What Are Your Odds Of Being Audited?

KAREN TENENBAUM Esq., LL.M., CPA IRS’ ability to verify information. The IRS and state tax departments utilize a range of technologies to identify under-reported income, including sharing data across federal and state jurisdictions. They also can compare data from various sources to find discrepancies between what a taxpayer has reported and a third-party such as an employer, bank or credit card company provided. In other words, it pays to make sure your numbers are accurate and supported by financial documents. In the event you are audited, there are many options available to you as demonstrated by the IRS Data Book, an annual publication from the IRS. An IRS “Offer in Compromise” allows a qualified taxpayer to settle their dispute

for less than the full amount owed. In 2018, taxpayers proposed 59,000 offers in compromise and 24,000 were accepted. Penalties the IRS adds on to a delinquent tax bill can also be reduced or eliminated. When a taxpayer owes back taxes, penalties and interest can be significant. In 2018, the IRS assessed close to $29.3 billion in civil penalties, but abated almost $12.0 billion. Again, the best advice is to pay your taxes accurately and on time. However, many taxpayers cannot

or did not comply for some reason. When that happens, the soundest action is to contact a tax attorney. The sooner you address your tax problems, the more options available to you to resolve your tax debt and avoid adverse collection actions. Karen Tenenbaum, Esq., LL.M. re you afraid of an IRS audit? Twenty-five percent of taxpayers fear an audit, but those who are older and wealthier usually are more worried, according to one study. The reality is that audit rates are relatively low. In fiscal year 2018, the IRS audited just 0.5 percent of the 196 million returns filed in calendar year 2017. This number is down 10 percent from 2017, 42 percent from 2010 and 67 percent from 50 years ago. What does this mean for the average taxpayer? While your chances of an audit are extremely low, that’s not a consolation if you are one of the people audited. Audits are stressful, invasive and time-consuming. Thanks to automated software programs that catch problems with your tax returns, you are also more likely than ever before to get a notice indicating a mistake or asking for clarification. Even if it’s a minor issue, it still scares most taxpayers. To reduce your risks, the best approach is to be proactive. There are common red flags that a tax advisor can help you avoid. In addition, many audits result from careless errors or underestimating the

BOOK REVIEW

Shea Serrano Makes History With Movies (And Other Things) BY MIKE ADAMS

madams@antonmediagroup.com

S

hea Serrano became the first Mexican-American author to have three different books top the New York Times bestseller list when Movies (And Other Things) took the No. 1 spot in the publication’s November rankings. Reaching the apex after years spent writing his way to the literary mountaintop turned out to be bittersweet. “It’s one of those situations where of course you’re excited that it happened but then the more time you spend with it you realize that it’s at least a little bit sucky,” Serrano said. “It should have happened already. It’s crazy that this is the first time that it’s happening.” The San Antonio native was humble about his success, and attributed it more to his ability to cultivate a fan base on social media than any particular set of skills he has acquired over his career. “I don’t think I’m just a super great writer or anything like that,” Serrano said. “I just happened to have Twitter, and other people didn’t before me. It’s easier to cultivate a following, and then you’re just selling directly to them.” Serrano has cultivated a Twitter following more than 300,000 strong through his years writing for the now-defunct Grantland and The Ringer. He uses the platform to promote his work, joke around with fans and insist he is, in fact, not short. From time to time he delves into politics, raising money for charities and those in need and firing shots at Donald Trump, but Serrano said he doesn’t maintain any illusions about his own importance or the importance of his work. “The stuff that I’m writing about, I treat it very seriously and earnestly,” Serrano said. “But ultimately it’s a silly way to earn a living. I was a teacher for nine years. That job made me feel important, and I don’t feel that why I’m writing, which is why I spend a significant amount of time speaking out about things. I know writing about I Am Legend isn’t going to change anything. But maybe if I write about it well enough and enough people like it, then when I go ‘hey, we should do something about this,’ those people will act.”

Shea Serrano is a three-time New York Times bestselling author. (Photo by Josh Huskin)

Still, impact or no impact, Serrano hopes he can at least help people have a little fun. “I’m trying to celebrate the stuff that I like,” Serrano said. “Any movie that gets mentioned in the book is a movie that I like, except Green Book.” Movies (And Other Things), like its predecessor Basketball (And Other Things), is a collection of essays that center around some aspect of the titular topic. Serrano humorously explores questions ranging from “Who’s the coolest movie dog owner” to “Were the Jurassic Park raptors just misunderstood?” At every step of the way, Serrano’s writing is accompanied by

illustrations from Dallas illustrator and frequent collaborator Arturo Torres, and the collection is bookended by a foreword from John Leguizamo and an afterword from Don Cheadle. Serrano has his own criteria for evaluating the movies that made it into the book. Critically darlings like Goodfellas and Kill Bill are explored and celebrated alongside films like Will Smith’s 2007 action flick I Am Legend, which sports a barely-passing 68-percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movies that stick with him, he said, do so because of the experience he had watching them much more than any technical achievements. “Watching a movie to me feels the same as listening to music,” Serrano said. “You put a song on and you feel it in your chest, there’s just something about it and you just feel it. That’s the main thing I look for, I look for a movie to make me feel that.” Through his work for Grantland and The Ringer, Serrano became known for his humor and his easygoing, personable style, on full display in pieces like “The ‘If I Fought This Rapper, Would

I Win?’ Chart” and “The Rules And Regulations Of The Jurassic World Theme Park.” Serrano’s style is almost confessional; he weaves in personal anecdotes and pop culture throwbacks to drive home whatever broader point he’s trying to make. “I had an editor give me some really good advice when I was starting out,” Serrano said of his technique. “He read an anecdote I had put in a thing I did that didn’t have any point to it and he called me out on it. He told me every article you write should reach a conclusion, and every sentence in that article should help you reach a conclusion. So if it’s not, you’re doing something wrong.” Serrano brings that same confessional bend to his latest bestseller, and by the time they’ve gone cover to cover on Movies (And Other Things), the reader will know just how embarrassed the family man felt when he fell off a ladder in front of his kids, among other things. Movies (And Other Things) is published by Twelve Books and available for purchase through Barnes and Noble and Amazon.

Although I realize most extra leg room seats are an extra charge, I’m sure some agreement could have been made if someone was willing to accommodate this lady. I became upset as I heard this story. It brought to my mind other rude situations I have either seen or experienced while flying. Whether we are flying for business or pleasure, we want our travel experience to be as uneventful as possible. This means encountering minimal unwanted stress. Some people avoid airline travel just because of potential issues. The following tips can help to reduce stress levels during airline travel: Be considerate when going through security. Be aware of those around you when removing shoes, jackets, etc. Excuse yourself if you bump someone. While waiting to board the plane, don’t block the aisle in the terminal and come forward in the line only when your row is called. There is a reason for this protocol, which is to make seating

When traveling with children, bring toys and other items to entertain them so they are not hanging over the seat or disturbing other passengers. When traveling with babies, talk to your doctor about remedies for ear pain and try to fly at a time when they will sleep through most of the flight. Try to use the restroom before boarding to minimize disturbing other passengers during the flight. When reclining your seat, be courteous of the person behind you. Be patient and courteous when deplaning. Gentlemen, help ladies and the elderly with removing their luggage from overhead bins. It will expedite the boarding and deplaning process for everyone. Saying please, thank you and excuse me improves the atmosphere for everyone Although some of these tips seem like common sense, a friendly reminder of the rules courtesy should be accepted.

ey, Anton reader, “I’m talking to you.” Don’t you realize its 2020? Don’t you realize that we’re at the beginning of a new decade? Don’t you realize that the timing couldn’t be better than today to pursue a fresh, positive start for yourself? Now is the time for action to take the place of excuses. So, let me get personal. Let’s say it’s not you, but a close friend, brother or sister, cousin or neighbor who is somehow not doing the right thing with his or her life, a screw up. Instead of striving for an “A” or “B” grade in college, that individual is happy with a “C” or “D.” Instead of seeking a promotion at work by being more responsible, he or she comes in later and is in jeopardy of being fired. Instead of being motivated and passionate about life, that individual drinks too much alcohol or gets “high” on weed on a regular basis. Know anybody that fits the above description? I do, and I call them loser. For every hour of every day of every month of every year, such individuals need to take their own destinies into control. When is it time to “walk the walk” rather than just “talk the talk?” Isn’t the answer obvious? It’s this very moment in time. Why not be a winner? You see, Anton readers, it isn’t enough to “want” to get better grades, to “want” to earn more money at your job, to “want” a better relationship with your parents, boyfriend/girlfriend, because each of us wants things. Unfortunately, “wanting” is never enough. You can say anything you want because words are easy to roll off a tongue. In fact, you want what you have. You see, if you were really serious about wanting something different, you would take the actions needed to achieve your goal. Only actions produce results. Nothing else really matters. However words, wants, or thoughts don’t really mean much. It’s what you do that will get

you what and where you want to be. Your success in 2020 is nothing more than having the ability, the drive and the determination to eliminate non-successful behaviors you exhibit to yourself and to others. You can’t plead ignorance or lack of a plan of action. Ever hear the expression “if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail?” It holds true in personal and business situations again and again. Try to start paying attention to people around you who you admire. Observe their actions and get a clue about what works for them. In short, 2020 can be your decade to become a self-starter—a true winner. I have confidence that you can make it happen. Professor Jack K. Mandel is a professor of marketing at Nassau Community College in Garden City. Refreshed And Renewed

Botox and injectables have come a long way in achieving a more youthful appearance BY JENNIFER FAUCI

jfauci@antonmediagroup.com

T

he holidays are a wonderful, but stressful time of year. In fact, some say that the start of school in September is what triggers the annual stress-fest all the way through January. But don’t let that exhaustion and worry show up on your face. Botox and injectables have come a long way. No longer do people associate Botox treatment with frozen faces and tight, unnatural looking skin. At Deep Blue Med Spa a team of certified medical aestheticians and physician assistants aim to help you relax and leave you feeling—and looking—more youthful and refreshed than you did when you walked through the door. And there’s a variety of treatments to choose from to correct wrinkles, smile lines, crow’s feet and saggy skin. For those concerned about their chin area, consider Kybella,

a non-surgical treatment with active ingredients that break down excess fat under the chin, helping to gradually contour the neck area. The formula is administered through a very fine needle and it takes about 15 to 20 minutes to complete the treatment. Two to four sessions are typically recommend depending on the needs of the patient. Perhaps you simply want injectables to combat the process of aging? Fortunately, a wide range is available to help address common cosmetic concerns such as wrinkles, fine lines, deep creases and volume loss. Botox treatment allows for smoother, more supple skin using an injectable formula made from a diluted form of botulinum toxin Type A. The formula helps to relax facial muscles that are involuntarily contracted. With little to no down time, the treatment is quick and can even be done on a lunch break. Results tend to last three to six months, and should be maintained with regular follow-up appointments. Other injectables include Dysport, Juvéderm,

Restylane, Radiesse and Sculptra Aesthetic. Beauty today is all about natural, healthy looking skin but even that sometimes needs a little help. Before you undergo treatment, a member of the Deep Blue team will assess your skin type, discuss any of your concerns and share their thoughts on what would be the best treatment and course of action for the appointment. The staff makes you feel at home during any medical or cosmetic procedure, especially for first-timers, to ensure that their physical and emotional experience is painless. Gentle injections to the face will create a less tired and more refreshed version of you (patients may experience bruising, swelling and numbness at first, all of which should fade within a few days’ time). Treat yourself to the gift of renewal this holiday season. Deep Blue Med Spa is located at 999 Franklin Ave., Garden City. Visit www. deepbluemedspa.com to find a treatment that is right for you.

The Future Of Treating Liver Disease

020 brings with it significant hope for advancements in liver disease across many different conditions. We will see the first medication approved for the treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Fatty liver disease is the most common liver disease in America. Currently, diet and exercise are the only treatments. Drug development for its treatment has been slow with most drugs failing to show efficacy or being associated with significant side effects. Obeticholic acid, however, a drug already approved for the treatment of primary biliary cholangitis, has shown promise in treating fatty liver, and will likely be approved by the FDA in late March to

accompanied by continued diet, exercise and control of diabetes in patients with this condition.

THE SPECIALIST David Bernstein, MD

treat fatty liver. While this medication is not a panacea, it finally will offer hope for patients. Successful treatment of fatty liver will not come from medications alone and this new therapy must be

There is also research being done in autoimmune liver disease and we hope to see some positive results in 2020. There are numerous clinical trials with new medications treating both primary biliary cholangitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis. These should report out early clinical results and hopefully these preliminary results will lead to the expansion in research to fill the void of treatment of these conditions. Several years ago, all the buzz in liver disease was about new treatments for chronic hepatitis Current

therapies cure more than 95 percent of people with hepatitis C using affordable 8 to 12 week regimens with minimal side effects. Sadly, there is a rise in the number of new hepatitis C cases due to the opioid epidemic, especially in our youth. The challenge in 2020 is to find and treat these patients while simultaneously treating their opioid addictions. If this can be done, we can prevent the spread of hepatitis C and hopefully get back on track to eliminate this disease in the U.S. by the stated goal of 2030. Perhaps the real need and excitement revolves around hepatitis B. More potent vaccines were recently introduced to better prevent this infection. This common condition can

be treated with essentially lifelong suppressive medications, which are not curative therapy. These treatments have been shown to reverse fibrosis and to reduce but not eliminate the risk of developing liver cancer. There is now real interest in developing new therapies to not only treat but cure hepatitis B. Several new diagnostic tests are being introduced, which will allow physicians to better monitor patients for response. 2020 looks to be an exciting year in liver medicine. I hope that by this time next year, there will be many new and exciting developments to discuss that will improve the lives of people suffering from liver disease as well as their families.

hen Hicksville resident Arjun Mainali was attending college in his home country of Nepal, he read a story that would change his life and hundreds of others. The piece, entitled “The Blood Donor,” inspired Mainali to give blood for the first time at age 19 in 1987. “I have seen, so many times, [people] were afraid to donate blood as they used to think donating blood makes their body weaker,” he explained. “Seeing this situation, I decided to donate blood. I thought maybe I could save people.” Mainali has since gone on to donate blood 172 times across 17 countries, helping to save the lives of 516 people. They are giving the greatest gift.” For 32 years, Mainali has dedicated his life to educating, advocating, encouraging, promoting and creating awareness about the importance of blood donations. He has traveled to six continents and 14 states for the sole purpose of donating blood. Since moving to Hicksville in 2000, Mainali has also organized dozens of local donation drives. Last month, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recognized Mainali for his astounding accomplishments as a dedicated blood donor. Saladino proclaimed Dec. 22, 2019 to be “World Blood Donor Arjun Mainali Day” in the Town of Oyster Bay in recognition of his selfless and lifesaving efforts.Saladino noted that this date is particularly fitting because Dec. 22, 1818 was the date of the first documented transfusion of human blood. “My aim is to inspire more and more people to donate blood,” Mainali said. “I tried to motivate as many people as I could. Anyone who is in good health, is older than 16 and weighs at least 110 pounds is eligible to donate, according to the American Red Cross. “Donating blood is not harmful,” Mainali said. “All healthy people can do it so don’t be afraid to donate.” Before you donate be sure to eat at your regular mealtimes and drink plenty of fluids, according to the New York Blood Center. If you are donating platelets, do not take aspirin or products containing aspirin, for at least 48 hours before your appointment. The process usually takes less than an hour. “Once you begin to donate and understand the importance, you’ll be likely to donate again,” Palmeri concluded. “You will feel wonderful knowing that you saved someone’s life.”

Everything You Want To Know About Bunions But Never Asked

bunion deformity is one of the most common foot conditions. The big toe shifts toward the other toes and the inside of the joint bulges inward. The widening of the foot causes pain from tightness in shoegear something I call “shoe conflict.” As the joint becomes misaligned more pain occurs. This deformity can be corrected with foot surgery when indicated.

Definition and Symptoms

The medical term for bunion is Hallux Valgus which in Latin means big toe bending outward. Bunio means enlargement in Latin. The base of the big toe joint pushes inward as the big toe itself pushes over toward the other toes. The joint bulges inward causing a medial eminence (bump), which rubs in shoes and becomes red and inflamed over time. This pain and rubbing left unchecked often leads to greater complications.

Causes

Overpronation, aka over-flattening of the foot while standing or walking,

DR. WILLIAM LEVINE

One study of aboriginal tribes showed that barefoot walkers developed bunions at a similar frequency as more traditional shoe wearing populations. Shoe gear may exacerbate symptoms of bunions but aren’t necessarily causative.

Treatment

puts extra pressure on the big toe joint. This extra stress makes the big toe joint (first metatarsophalangeal joint) unstable which causes the attaching tendons and ligaments to pull the bone out of place. Over time the joint moves over and a bunion forms. Overly elastic ligaments can also contribute to a bunion’s growth.

Prevalence

About 30 percent of the population develops bunions, which indicates how common they are. Genetics play a role as do foot type and structure. Women suffer with bunions more than men, but men are not immune.

Conservative measures are tried first. These include: paring of calluses, changing shoegear, altering activity level, paddings and toe spacers, custom prescribed orthotics, anti-inflammatory injections, PRP (platelet rich plasma) therapy and physical therapy. When conservative measures do not work or the deformity is too large surgery may be recommended. Modern bunion surgery offers sophisticated and gentle options. Depending on the patient and type of bunion the right procedure is determined. I often employ a near pain-free procedure with a smaller, mini-invasive approach. The biomechanics of the foot and the patient’s lifestyle are taken into account. The days of crutches and

non weight-bearing are behind us. A cast post procedure is not necessary. With proper bandaging and use of a surgical shoe one can actually walk and bear weight right away, albeit carefully and only as needed during the first week. Stitches are removed around two weeks after surgery. Bandages are changed weekly. Each patient varies; some return to work in a couple weeks. Others may return after 4-5 weeks. Today’s diagnostics and procedures available for bunion correction assure an optimal result. Less pain, less swelling and smaller and barely visible incisions have become commonplace when a thoughtful plan is used. Dr. William Levine is a board certified Podiatrist with 26 years of experience. He is the owner of Manhasset Podiatry, a private practice located at 1180 Northern Blvd. in Manhasset. Levine is on staff at Fifth Avenue Surgery Center in Manhattan and performs surgery there.

It is normal to be agitated and defensive in the face of change. Push through. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). In art, there is no failing. If you make what doesn’t turn out in your preferred way, if you make what doesn’t sell, if you make what’s not quite appropriate for the audience, if you make a mess, it’s not a fail, it’s still a “make.” Life is art, and it follows the same rules. Take the lessons and create what’s next. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). If fear of change prevents you from upgrading your thought processes to claim the new you, consider overlapping the new and old. Think of it like using a new computer or phone. You don’t have to toss out the old immediately. Just start using the new one, and eventually it will become the hub of your daily life. CANCER (June 22-July 22). You don’t wake up every morning feeling in love with life, and yet there are aspects you can focus on to get the good emotions running through you. It all starts with finding that pool of thoughts you can bathe your soul in. With a daily dunk, you’ll soon fix something that’s been getting in the way of your peace and comfort. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You’ll get excited about who you could become, and you’ll be drawn to read and train and do anything you can think of to make your transformation happen. Just remember that emergence is a natural phenomenon and many aspects of it can’t be rushed. Relax and believe as you move toward your destiny. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Early humans crouched around a campfire to listen to a storyteller. Modern humans do the same thing around the dinner table, television, podcast, theater, watercooler, bar, etc. This week, add your phone to the list. Everyone wants to hear about your life and times, and you’ll get the chance to perfect your take. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). For moments, your mind feels as wide as the sky and indeed it is, when channeling a perspective above the troubles, barriers and structures erected to keep daily life in manageable scope. With practice, you can have the best of both worlds. Learn the routes between states of mind. The more you travel them, the easier it gets. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). The reasons to be happy do not exist until you point to them. They are like words that emerge from the keyboard only after you tap to assemble each letter. You become happy when you pull together the evidence to stack up a picture of happiness and live in that scene. This week, you’ll make a point to do this. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Once again it becomes rather obvious that you’re interested in different things than many of the people around you are. Thus, you’re in the perfect position to take advantage of the very best feature of the internet -- the ability to connect with like minds and find your tribe. Be adventurous, explorer! CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). It’s a week when words carry more weight and seem to have disproportionate consequences. Choose carefully. The wrong ones can distance you from the very thing you want to be close to or worse -- betray, disappoint and put you on the outside. The right words can bring you into someone’s heart. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). From the outside, it looks like very confident people have deeper wells of courage, but this may not be the case. Often they are shaking on the inside, but their commitment disallows them from backing down. Confidence is built through commitment. The payout for showing up will be considerable this week. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). You’ll do an upgrade on your thinking this week. Hear your thoughts; weed out the rotten ones and counter them. Blow them off with a new phrase. For instance, whenever you’re having an unhelpful thought, add “and that was my old way of thinking” to the end. Next, follow through with good action.

County Unveils Shared Services Panel

assau County Executive Laura Curran recently joined the shared services panel to vote on and approve the 2020 Nassau County Shared Services and Taxpayer Savings Plan. If implemented, the plan will save about $7.3 million in 2020. The shared service panel is a group of Nassau County and municipal leaders brought together to identify and implement new ways to save taxpayers money through shared and more efficient services between local governments within the county. The plan was compiled under the guidance of the Rockefeller Institute of Government. “I am proud that the separate municipalities within Nassau County will be collaborating to deliver improved governmental services at a lower cost to the taxpayers,” Curran said. “The 2020 shared services plan will not only save residents’ money, it will help our county and fellow municipalities run more efficiently.” The plan’s key initiatives include:

• “Digitize Nassau,” a program to develop joint efforts to digitize mandated records • Expand joint waste and recycling contracts • Coordinated effort to improving volunteer ambulance/EMS service • Centralized contracts for various insurance products • Joint purchase of a Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems “Shared service initiatives have enerated property tax savings for residents

by facilitating partnerships between local governments,” Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino said. Many of the projects outlined in the plan have an anticipated multiyear implementation timeline. The Rockefeller Institute estimates savings of up to $7.3 million in 2020, if fully implemented, plus recurring cost savings with the support of intergovernmental partners. “The NCVOA sincerely appreciates the very important work accomplished

by County Executive Curran and the personnel of the Department of Shared Services,” Edward Lieberman, president of the Nassau County Village Officials Association, said. “Although our member villages are constantly utilizing viable methods to better effectuate the quality and the sharing of their local services for the benefit of their respective residents, we also acknowledge that this legislation and its accompanying incorporated procedures is necessary and proper and a welcomed endeavor.” Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature created the county-wide shared services initiative in 2017, which requires each county in New York, except New York City, to create a shared services plan between municipalities by encouraging cooperation through facilitating operational collaboration resulting in local property tax savings for residents. —Submitted by the office of Nassau County Executive Laura Curran

THE SPORTS DESK

The Rise Of Sports Gambling BY JOSEPH WOLKIN

T

jwolkin@antonmediagroup.com

he industry is booming. Millions of dollars are being spent on sports gambling, with several states legalizing the practice recently across America. The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 prevented states from authorizing sports betting, but New Jersey wanted to change that in order to revamp Atlantic City. So in 2012, then-Governor Chris Christie contradicted this national law and signed a New Jersey legislation that enables casinos and racetracks in New Jersey to participate in limited sports betting. Many professional leagues, at the time, were opposed to such a practice, but that changed by the end of the decade. Fast forward to June of 2018. Delaware became the only state besides Nevada to fully legalize sports betting, with New Jersey following suit a week later. As of the start of 2020, 19 states have legalized sports betting, either for online practices only or in casinos only. The majority of states are taking steps to do the same, all thanks to Christie’s determination when he found out how much money the Garden State was losing without it. Christie/Murphy v. National Collegiate Athletic Association headed to the Supreme Court in 2018, arguing about the government’s control over individual states’ law-making abilities. The 10th Amendment protects states’ rights to make their own laws, but the 1992 act was protected under the Supremacy Clause, simply meaning that it is the law of the land. But the Supreme Court subsequently overturned the act, 6-3, saying it was unconstitutional. Now, the industry is booming. New Jersey earned approximately $4 billion in sports betting revenue in 2019. Leagues, too, have been increasing profit margins thanks to the creation of Internet-based sportsbooks such as FanDuel and DraftKings, the two leaders in sports betting. “The National Basketball Association argued that its costs for ensuring the fairness of its games

would go up with the implementation of gambling and that the league should be compensated,” a Pew Research Center study, published by Elaine S. Povich in 2018, explained. Online sportsbooks are becoming more popular as states legalize the web-based practice. But some states have banned the mobile version of it. Players deposit money prior to betting, and they can do so for individual games, player-on-player matchups and more.

A large draw to sports gambling is the fact that it gives fans a chance to have a more intimate tie to in the game they’re watching. In all, the industry totals about $150 billion in revenue, according to legalsportsbetting.com. Leagues, like the NBA, many of which were against sports betting for years ,are now in favor of it. The argument often heard from leagues is that it will lead to teams fixing games, or even worse, seeing officials/referees bet on them. A fix to that,

ANTHONY MURRAY Managing Editor DAVE GIL DE RUBIO Editor STEVE MOSCO Contributing Editor ALEX NUÑEZ Creative Director CATHY BONGIORNO Assistant Art Director FRANK A. VIRGA President ROBIN CARTER Director of Production SHARI EGNASKO Director of Sales Administration IRIS PICONE Director of Operations

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in 2017, is to allow in-game betting for specific events, rather than which team will win a battle. And that’s exactly what the creation of online sportsbooks has done. Now, the industry is exceeding all expectations. Lovers of fantasy sports are taking their passion and knowledge to the betting side of things. The transition has been simple for fantasy sports fanatics, who often pride themselves on having extensive knowledge of the leagues they participate in. But there is always the worry about those who develop a gambling issue, which is one of the arguments about sports betting, simply because it is so easy to participate in. For those who think they might have an issue or know someone who might have one, call the National Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-522-4700.
