CHIGAGO MED Code Med S. Epatha Merkerson talks about her recurring role on Chicago Med BY CAROLINE RYAN

A

cryan@antonmediagroup.com

fter her long-standing career as Anita Van Buren on one of television’s most popular legal drama television series, Law and Order, S. Epatha Merkerson has traded in her lieutenant’s badge for hospital garb in her role on NBC’s Chicago Med. In 2015, after working extensively with executive producer Dick Wolf, the mastermind behind Law and Order and now the Chicago franchises (Med, Fire, P.D.), Merkerson landed the role of character Sharon Goodwin, the Chief of Medical Services on Med and quickly took to the role. “My manager was talking to Peter Jankowski, one of our executive producers and I said, ‘hey, tell Peter that I’m ready to work,’ Merkerson said. “Peter called back and said, ‘Is she’s serious, because there might be something for her in Chicago.’ Literally, that’s how it happened and I know it’s because of my long history with Wolf Entertainment, that [the role] happened so easily.” After a five-year hiatus between the conclusion of Law and Order and season one of Chicago Med, Merkerson was thrilled to be working with Wolf on a television series yet again. “One of the things that attracts me to [the roles] that Dick Wolf [produces] is that the shows are always entertaining,” Merkerson said. “When you sit down, you sit down to be entertained. But when you stand up and the show is over, you’ve learned something. I always feel that’s the best of television. Television should not only entertain, but educate and all of Dick’s shows do that. I know the scripts are going to be compelling and interesting, the actors are going to be good. It’s really a no-brainer for me working with Dick—he’s a good guy.” Wolf often bases the storylines for each episode in the series as accounts of true events. Although the show is fictional, taking on the role of a

chief of medical services has given Merkerson a taste of the real-life complexities of the medical field, as well as the compassion those who choose the medical profession must elicit. “Since our scripts are usually taken from true stories, what I see is the difficulties that health professionals go through just to care for people and our health care system—what shambles it’s in,” Merkerson said. “Those are the things that are disheartening to learn. In our hospital, Gaffney Hospital, I think what Goodwin tries to do is find that fine line between taking care of the patients, but also making sure that the doctors are protected and that they’re doing the best that they can do. With the professionals that I’ve spoken to, that is pretty much the same thing that they do. Number one is patient care.” Since season one, Merkerson’s

character has often shown a compassionate, yet sympathetic side to the many crazy scenarios, which take place at Gaffney Hospital. Despite pressure from those above her, Goodwin’s goal is to always advocate for the doctors to provide the best possible care to those visiting the hospital. “I think that Goodwin is a pretty steady [character],” Merkerson said. “What changes her are the specific things that happen within each episode. I think you see someone who’s always working to do the right thing. Every episode lends itself to an issue that she has to deal with for the safety of the patient, and for the smooth running of the hospital. She has to look out for the doctors, nurses and all of the people that fill up the emergency department. Those are the times when you see [the most] growth in her.”

Upcoming episodes in season five of Chicago Med will feature surprising twists within the character plots, including continued conflicts with Gwen Garrett (Heather Headley), the chief operating officer of Gaffney Medical Center, as well as the return of Goodwin’s ex-husband, Bert (Greg Alan Williams). “What I like about how they’re writing Goodwin, is they always put her up against situations where she has to make a legal or moral decision and sometimes her heart comes into play,” Merkerson said. “She may do things for the people that work for her that is not quite on the up-and-up, but it always gives good results. You have to trust the people that work for you. I think we’ll see more of that battle between doing what’s right and doing what’s morally right.” Watch Chicago Med on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.

CHIGAGO FIRE Coming In Hot Chicago Fire’s Joe Minoso talks character growth BY ANTHONY MURRAY

amurray@antonmediagroup.com

H

e’s loyal, he’s fun loving and he’s a man who wears his heart on his sleeve. Those are the words that best describe Joe Minoso’s character Joe Cruz on NBC’s Chicago Fire. For the past eight seasons, viewers of the Dick Wolfcreated action drama have seen Cruz, who was a product of Chicago’s tough streets, grow as a firefighter and more importantly as a person. Growing up, Minoso said that he became enthralled in acting when he went to see his girlfriend’s play when he was in high school. While watching the second act of the play, he wanted to be a part of it and decided to help. “By the second act, I was so riveted by what I was watching that I was asking the guys moving the sets if they needed any help because I wanted to be involved in what was happening,” Minoso said. “I was so taken by it. I thought I was way too shy to be an actor so I joined the tech crew. A year later, there was an open audition for the role of Dracula, which I somehow miraculously booked. The second that I did a play, I knew that this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.” Minoso went on to college at Adelphi University in Garden City where he received his bachelor’s degree in fine arts and afterwards went on to Northern Illinois University, which is 55 miles west of Chicago, to pursue a master’s degree. After getting fed up with the harsh Chicago winters, Minoso decided to move to sunny Los Angeles to try his hand at acting only to be brought back to where it all started and call Chicago home once again. “After ‘Snowmageddon’ in 2011, which was a giant snowstorm, I got fed up with Chicago winters and said, ‘I’m out of here’ and gave away everything I owned except for two suitcases and moved to Los Angeles with the hopes of starting out over there. Exactly two months later, I booked the role on Chicago Fire and it brought me right back to experience winter in a far more intimate way.”

Joe Minoso as Joe Cruz (Photo by Elizabeth Morris/NBC) In the season eight premiere, the entire firehouse and more importantly Cruz suffered a major loss when one of their own, fellow firefighter Otis Zvonecek, died in a massive fire. It is safe to say that Minoso’s heart wrenching performance of losing his best friend was definitely a tearjerker. “That was a whole lot easier than I would want it to be because Yuri Sardarov, the gentleman who played Otis, is frankly one of my best friends,” Minoso said about how hard it was for him to portray such emotional scenes. “He is one of my closest friends and we were inseparable on set. When we found out that he was going to be gone, it was really easy to channel that into the character and the emotions of the character because I was going to miss him like crazy. It was going to be hard to continue down this road on this show without him. We were both brought in on the very same day to start training and we were the last two people cast. It was just the two of us together when we started doing our firefighter training.

We’ve been together since day one and then we moved in together for a year during our first year on the show. We developed a really close bond and it’s still heartbreaking to not have him there.” This season is a busy one for Cruz since he is also planning a wedding to his fiancé, Chloe. “You’re going to get the chance to experience what it’s like for Joe Cruz preparing for a wedding,” Minoso said. “I think one of the things that came out of the death of Otis is Cruz felt he had to grow up a bit. The existence of Otis in Cruz’s life and vice versa gave them the permission to live sort of a man-child life. They weren’t necessarily looking to move into the next stage of life. Now that he’s engaged and he has to do all these things to get this wedding going, cold feet tends to set in and nerves kick in. I think you’re going to see more and more of that. Also, just him being the best firefighter that he can be. I think he’s eager to prove himself even more and I think he’s really buried himself

in his work. With the exception of the loss of Otis, beyond that it’s been a really productive and effective year for Cruz. I think he’s diving himself into these things to not feel that pain and to not feel that loss as much. It’ll be interesting quite frankly. There’s still more to come that I don’t even know. I’m more interested to see where we go once he’s married and how that will develop than I am getting to the wedding. We just [filmed] the wedding episode and it’s going to be a pretty big wedding.” And with a show as intense as the flames that Firehouse 51 puts out every week, safety is always a top priority for the cast on set. “Anytime you see an interior fire on Chicago Fire, that’s all real,” Minoso said. “It is controlled and they’re safe about it, but on average when we’re doing something like that and we have to do that real fire, you have pops [or] 30 seconds to get off a shot because after that things start to actually catch fire and burn. If anything, I would say eight seasons in, it’s just kind of tedious at this point because we’re so safe and our stunt team are incredible and they take such good care of us. So at this point, it’s all in a day’s work. Definitely when we first started out, it’s an adrenaline rush like you’ve never felt. I sort of understand a small level of what these firefighters go through and I would assume that the adrenaline that I feel is only a hundredfold when their lives are actually in peril. I can see why these guys are adrenaline junkies and why they like their jobs as much as they do.” So what else is Minoso currently working on besides Chicago Fire? “I’m actually in the process of trying to finalize details to direct a movie that would star Christian Stolte and it’s called The Last Hurrah,” Minoso said. “We’re pretty excited about it and we hope to film in the summer. Fingers crossed that everything goes as it should. We’ll probably be releasing it sometime in the winter of next year.” Watch Chicago Fire on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on NBC.

CHIGAGO P.D. In The Line Of Fire Chicago P.D.’s Marina Squerciati talks all things Kim Burgess BY CAROLINE RYAN

cryan@antonmediagroup.com

N

BC’s Chicago P.D., a police drama series featuring the men and women of the Chicago Police Department’s elite Intelligence Unit, combat some of Chicago’s most henious crimes. Marina Squerciati, who plays officer Kim Burgess, has continually brought energy, kindness and stellar research skills, proving her to be an asset to the Intelligence Unit. Now in its seventh season, viewers have seen Burgess rise up through the ranks. In season one she took to the streets as a patrol officer, but quickly made her way to the top by landing a spot on the intelligence team, helping the team take down some of the city’s toughest criminals. Squerciati feels that her character certainly proves she has what it takes to be a real and compassionate police officer. “I like that she is a badass, but also has a softer side,” Squerciati said. “You don’t have to be made of Teflon to be a strong woman. She’s multi-faceted and one of those facets happens to be tenderness and kindness, but that doesn’t take away from how strong she is.” The show covers some of the city’s most heinous crimes; from organized crime to drug trafficking to murders, the members of the intelligence unit always have one goal in mind: bring the criminals to justice. Fighting crime has proven to be a strenuous task with fight scenes, long distance running, and the overall stamina needed for the high-intensity scenes in the show. Squerciati exercises a few days a week to stay in-shape. “I have to go to the gym because there’s a lot of running scenes, a lot of quick moving and [you have to be] agile,” Squerciati said. “You have to be fit in order to achieve that. If we do a fight scene, like the fight scene in the episode where I lost the baby, we had a fight coordinator and rehearsals. But I think there is a level of fitness that just makes it easier, so I try to work out like at least three times a week.” Squerciati previously lived in

New York, but moved to Chicago immediately after she landed the role of Burgess. Filming for P.D. is an extensive time commitment. “It’s a 10-month season and we film [about] 14 hours a day,” Squerciati said. “But in the Chicago winter, that can really take a lot out of you. We have a school teacher’s schedule in that we have a summer hiatus, so by the time April comes around, everyone is ready for a break. It’s really an incredibly fun and wonderful show to film, but it’s also really hard and that break is pretty crucial.” From patrol officer to detective, Squerciati’s character has grown substantially over the years, having experienced many hardships throughout the seasons, Burgess’ softer side has somewhat hardened over the years. “I think as a police officer you see so much that it’s kind of important to harden because if everything affects you the same way you’ll burn out,” Squerciati said. “But I also think it’s

important that you don’t harden too much and lose your humanity or forget that you’re seeing people at the worst moments of their life. I think it’s a balance of not being too hard or too soft, but finding some place in the middle. I think that Voigt’s character has really developed to be that father figure that helps us maintain that balance.” Burgess’ on-and-off again relationship with Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) has most recently brought tears to viewers eyes. After the brutal fight scene in episode 15 where Burgess ultimately loses her baby, viewers have been speculating how she will handle the loss. “I think that everyone’s going to deal with that kind of tragedy differently,” Squerciati said. “But I think that for Burgess, it’s a numbness. We left her numb and I think that is how she’s going to survive this for the time being; just not letting herself feel. I think she’s in so much pain that if she lets herself feel it will just overwhelm her.”

Aside from Chicago P.D., Squerciati likes to show off her comedy skills. When she isn’t filming for P.D., she and her partner Patrick Webb developed a web comedy series called Special Skills, which features conversations between two young struggling actors, Patrick and Marina, who are trying to break into show business. They believe they are just on the cusp of making it big time, but things don’t seem to go as planned. Several cast members from Chicago P.D. and Chicago Fire have made appearances in the webisodes. Developed in 2017, the series has five episodes and is streamed on Youtube. “I like to showcase my comedy side whenever I can,” Squerciati said. “There are some funny [episodes] with Monica Raymond and Patrick Flueger. We got everyone involved, Christian Stolte and Amy Morton, everyone has a part in the series.” Watch Chicago P.D. on NBC Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET.

Catch A Show Fearless is the word most used to describe Chicago theater. The adjective is a nod to the soul of the city, home to more than 200 stages, including five regional Tony Awardwinning theaters (more than any other city in the nation can say, no offense to The Great White Way). Acclaimed productions aside, Chicago performance is, perhaps, best known for its laughs. OUR ENVIRONMENT

Bagging The Plastic Bag Addiction BY FRANK RIZZO

frizzo@antonmediagroup.com

B

y the time you read this, your experience at your local supermarket will have undergone a slight change. No longer will your groceries be placed in single-use plastic bags. It will be the same at any establishment that collects state sales taxes and sells items that need to be bagged. That’s because New York State, as of March 1, enacted its Plastic Bag Waste Reduction Act. The intent, according to a press release, is to “reduce litter, cut greenhouse gas emissions and protect the environment for future generations.” As with any law, it has drawn mixed reactions. Retailers worry that the switch to paper and recyclable bags will increase costs. Environmentalist fret that the ban did not go far enough, and paper bag manufacturing has a higher carbon footprint. Plastic bag manufacturers, including one in Suffolk County, fear that these bans will hurt business. “Right this minute, plastic bags are hanging in trees, blowing down the streets, filling up our landfills and polluting our lakes, rivers and streams—all hurting our environment,” Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a statement. “Twelve million barrels of oil are used to make the plastic bags we use [nationally] every year and by 2050, there will be more plastic by weight in the oceans than fish. We took bold action to protect our environment and ban these environmental blights.” The state’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has spearheaded an outreach effort titled “BYOBagNY,” a campaign encompassing ads in various traditional and social media. The effort includes

distributing more than 270,000 reusable bags, focusing on low- and moderate-income communities. “New York continues to be a national leader on environmental issues, and the plastic bag ban is the latest in a series of actions Governor Cuomo has directed to preserve our air, land and waters for future generations,” DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos said. “DEC is proud to be at the forefront of these efforts and will continue to work to develop solutions to combat climate change and protect the environment and we continue to encourage New Yorkers to BYOBagNY and bring their own reusable bags wherever and whenever they shop.” The DEC estimates that New Yorkers use 23 billion plastic bags annually, “and approximately 85 percent of this staggering total ends up in landfills, recycling machines, waterways and streets.” The act was the end result of a task force Cuomo created in March 2017, chaired by Seggos. It was signed into law on Earth Day, April 23, 2019. Final regulations, incorporating more than 2,500 comments from industry, environmental groups and other stakeholders, were implemented on Feb. 26. The law exempts things like bags used to deliver newspapers to subscribers, dry cleaners’ garment bags or bags used in food preparation, take out and delivery. The American Recyclable Plastic Bag Alliance warns of

a paper shortage, citing the coronavirus outbreak as a factor.

Recyclable Not

Most single-use plastic bags are made from high- or low-density polyethylene (HDPE/LDPE), a fossil fuel derivative. Though “hard” plastic PE products are widely recycled, the task force report noted that “film versions of these plastics used to produce single-use plastic bags cannot be readily recycled in the same manner as HDPE and LDPE containers [which] can be placed in standard curbside recycling bins along with other recyclable materials and sent to a recyclables handling recovery facility (RHRF), commonly referred to as a materials recovery facility (MRF), where a combination of equipment and hand-sorting from conveyors separate the mixed recyclables into their individual recyclable components. Plastic bags that end up in curbside recycling bins pose significant problems with processing mixed recyclables. Plastic bags and other film plastic easily become tangled or jammed in processing equipment at a MRF, creating costly operational issues. These types of operational issues have the potential to shut down a MRF for hours or even days as they clear the equipment of entangled plastic bags.” The report’s authors, who studied bans in other states and municipalities, and talked with recycling operators, noted that problems with

Governor Andrew Cuomo signs the single-use plastic bag ban into law last April. Nassau County legislators Ellen Birnbaum (second from left), Arnold Drucker and Debra Mulé look on. (Kevin P. Coughlin/Office of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo) plastic bags cost them up to $1 million per year in workers’ time and to fix machinery jams.

Supermarkets React

“Many of our shoppers at Stew Leonard’s bring their own reusable bags already. It’s a feel-good thing,” Joe Vota, director of sales at Stew Leonard’s in East Meadow, said in a statement. “We’ve also recently seen many customers who would have asked for free plastic bags to hold a few items are now asking that ‘paid’ stickers be placed on the merchandise, which they carry out without any bags. Since January 2018, when Suffolk County’s plastic bag ban was enacted, our Farmingdale store has experienced a 42 percent decline in bag usage, compared to the previous year. Reduced bag costs have allowed us to increase the number of sale items benefiting our customers. When the statewide ban takes effect, we expect to

see a similar decline in bag usage and we’ll again pass those savings along to our customers.” Stop & Shop, in a press release, said that, beginning Feb. 22, it offers free reusable bags at its store locations across New York. In addition, stores will have information tables “to answer questions about the upcoming ban and to provide giveaway items including a free reusable bag for every customer who brings in one or more carryout plastic bags for recycling. The plastic bags collected will be recycled into composite wood, which is used for things like decking, park benches and playground equipment.” A Stop & Shop spokesperson did not reply to inquiries regarding the costs of paper versus plastic, and what the chain will do with its existing stock of single-use bags. Wakefern Food Corp., parent company of Shop Rite, did not return an email seeking comment.

Election Day Looms It is eight long months until Election Day, assuming we can survive the daily barrage of events and the clash of personalities. We know who the Republican candidate for president will be so the only mystery is who will be the Democratic Party standard-bearer. As a way of helping you figure out who the Democratic candidate will be, it is safe to say that one of them has a first or last name with the letter “B.” To eliminate any guessing it is going to be either Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden or Michael Bloomberg. You may have your own favorite whose name doesn’t contain a “b,” but I am following the odds makers and my own personal instincts, some of which have been wrong year-afteryear. Hopefully, the winner will have the smarts to pick a running mate with no “b” name. Let’s start with Bernie Sanders. At this point in time, he is becoming a front-runner thanks to the support of the 18 to 29 crowd. He has some minority community support, but his far left policies will not be able to get support from the majority of the Democratic Party. He has President Donald Trump firmly in his corner, which should be a liability for some. If he is still a viable candidate at the nominating convention in July, he will face bitter opposition from mainstream Democrats, who believe he is unelectable. Former Vice President Joe Biden appears to be the safe choice for most Democrats. He is favored by many people for his experience and could take over the White House without skipping a beat. A poor showing in Iowa and New Hampshire will slow down his momentum and if he is

unable to raise additional funds, he could be out of the campaign just after March 3, when several states cast ballots. New York City’s former Mayor Mike Bloomberg has entered the race much later than the other potential candidates, but an infusion of $225 million and the hiring of more than 1,000 paid workers, has made him a serious contender. His polling numbers are rising each week, as both Democrats and Republicans, are sending a message that they could be swayed to vote for him. Bloomberg might be the only Democrat who could stop Sanders. The other noteworthy “B” is Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who accumulated a bundle of cash and some ardent supporters. He’s a fresh face on the campaign trail and has won over supporters from all age groups. As of March 1, he dropped out of the race, but political experts believe it’s not the last of the small town mayor, who made history as the first openly gay presidential candidate. To paraphrase Shakespeare, “to B or not to B, that is the question.” So next time you’re asked who will be Trump’s challenger, it’s safe to say that the chosen candidate has a “b” in his name.

ideawee, one of the country’s oldest and most respected animal welfare and pet adoption organizations, announced the winners of this year’s Love Your Pet Art Contest and Expo, an art competition for Long Island students in grades 1-12. Prizes were awarded in five groupings based on children’s grade year in school: Grades 1 and 2; Grades 3 and 4; Grades 5 and 6; Grades 7 and 8; and Grades 9 through 12. The winners are: Jasey Cole, a first grader, who is home schooled and lives in East Quogue; Scarlet Rovet, a fourth grader at East Moriches Elementary School in East Moriches; Nadia Sookoo, a fifth grader at Tangier Smith Elementary in Mastic Beach; Madison Cohen, a seventh grader at the Portledge School in Locust Valley; and Uma Kaushik, an 11th grader at Syosset High School. The winning artwork featured drawings of pets and a photograph of a dog relaxing with a book. The much-anticipated annual event gave the budding artists the chance to demonstrate their artistic ability and memorialize their love for their pets in many mediums including drawings, sculpture and photography. This year, two hundred pieces of artwork were submitted, and the winners were chosen by public votes. Winners received gift cards from Target, Splish Splash, Tanger Outlets, Dave and Busters and the Long Island Aquarium. “Animals and humans share unbreakable bonds, but the connections between children and their pets are particularly unique,” Bideawee President Leslie Granger said. “We are so thrilled to feature these relationships in Bideawee’s Love Your Pet Art Contest and Expo.” The organization congratulated the five winners, as well as all of those who submitted their beautiful artwork to share with the Bideawee community.

ollege is expensive. So is child care. U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand wants to expand the circle of student-parents who receive child care support. In the present political climate, she was asked, might not there be resistance for what opponents invariably call “nanny state” and costly government policies? “Those people are stuck in the past,” the junior senator from New York told Anton Media Group. “They don’t understand that the average student is a single mom and if she’s going to earn to her full economic potential, she needs things like affordable day care and access to paid leave. That’s why I focus on such issues, because these are economic engines that can transform the middle class. I hope more people

earn their way into their middle class and help our economy thrive.” Gillibrand visited Nassau Community College’s Children’s Greenhouse recently. The child care center provided the background for her touting the Preparing and Resourcing Our Student Parents and Early Childhood Teachers Act (PROSPECT Act). It would provide $9 billion over five years to fund programs providing free child care services for up to 500,000 children of parents attending community colleges and minority-serving institutions. In New York State colleges, nearly 200,000 undergraduates are parents, and almost half are single mothers. A press release stated that the act “comes after a report revealed that one-in-five college students are raising a child under the age of 5 while in school, and that many of these parents have trouble finding affordable and high-quality child care.” One of those single mothers at Gillibrand’s press conference was Natasha Law of Valley Stream, a nursing student at NCC. She spoke as Gillibrand asked Law’s daughter Hunter, 4, to stand beside her. Hunter is enrolled at the day care center. “I am a testament to parents and students out there who think they can’t pursue education and can’t invest in their future because of child care costs,”

Law said. “If not for the Greenhouse, I would not be able to do it.” NCC President Dr. Jermaine Williams said the Greenhouse had been operating for 40 years, and supported the act. “[It] will assure that more college students will have greater access to affordable and high-quality daycare, alleviating the financial pressure of paying for childcare and allowing our students to focus on their academic success,” Williams said in a statement. As he introduced Gillibrand, Williams said, “New York is a highneeds state for child care,” and went on to cite a recent study that 775 students at NCC were identified as single parents, and 90 percent of those students were eligible for Pell Grants a federal grant for low-income students. In addition, one-quarter of NCC students were 25 or older, and 51 percent of those working are putting in 21 or more hours on the job. Gillibrand stated that the high cost of living on Long Island exacerbated the burdens on student parents. “At a time when college costs are skyrocketing, we simply cannot stay on the sidelines as it gets even harder for student parents to afford a higher education,” New York State Senator Kevin Thomas said. “We have to act. The PROSPECT Act is a step in the right direction. This is a critical investment in the future of our communities.” Gillibrand acknowledged to Anton Media Group that the proposed bill would be easier to pass if the Democrats flipped the Senate this fall—and recaptured the White House. If that were to happen, she said, “We will have a much more robust government that cares about these social safety nets.” In an interview, Gillibrand dismissed those who would oppose the act. “I believe the bill pays for itself,” she said. “Just look at Natasha’s story. She’s going to be able to become a nurse. She’s going to be able to earn more money. She’s going to pay more taxes. She’s going to earn her way into the middle class. This kind of bill allows more students to thrive in their academics in order to get higher-paying jobs and provide for their kids. It’s a win-win and it makes perfect sense.”

PETS

What You Need To Know Before Getting A Rabbit As A Pet BY DR. SHACHAR MALKA editorial@antonmediagroup.com

F

ebruary was Adopt a Rabbit Month, where we shine a spotlight on rescues and shelters, many of whom have more than their fair share of rabbits looking for good homes. And that shouldn’t change for March, either. Rabbits are the third most surrendered pets to animal shelters in the United States after cats and dogs. While they are small and undeniably cute, rabbits aren’t low-maintenance animals and contrary to popular thinking, are not ideal pets for small children. Let’s discuss the main reasons as to why they get abandoned, what makes for a good rabbit owner, and where you can rescue one if you think owning a rabbit is a good fit for your lifestyle. First, let’s go over a few quick facts that are important to know if you have a pet rabbit or are considering adopting one: Rabbits can be territorial: They need lots of space, and have clear preferences on where they like to sleep and eat. They get bored: Just like other pets and humans, rabbits require stimulation to prevent boredom and depression. Your rabbit needs plenty of TLC, toys and attention. Their nails and teeth just keep growing: Their nails and teeth keep growing throughout their lives. Eating the right diet and having the correct toys to keep their teeth and nails filed is very important. For example, Timothy hay and wooden toys (along with green leaf salad and small portion of pellets without seeds), can help keep their teeth at a manageable length. If their teeth get too long, they can develop dental disease, abscesses, and may even stop eating altogether. Rabbits also shed a lot and can get hairballs. Constant brushing is required to keep their coats healthy. Domesticated rabbits don’t belong outdoors: Unlike rabbits in the wild, domesticated rabbits don’t have the skills to find food or shelter on their own. Some people who don’t want their rabbits anymore leave them outside, believing that they’re doing their pet a favor by letting them into the wild. This is unfortunately a false assumption. If you do want your rabbit to get some sunshine, make sure to closely monitor it at all times, and never let it wander off alone. Predators, grass sprayed with weed killer, and bugs are all potential threats to your pet’s wellbeing.

Q A

Why are rabbits abandoned so frequently? Many rabbits are initially purchased because parents think they can make a good first pet for their kids. Others are purchased as cute Easter gifts. However, most people fail to do their research before bringing a rabbit home. Rabbits are wonderful pets, but they do require grooming, socialization, and regular cage cleaning, in addition

Phillip to regular preventative visits to the vet. They are also not great pets for little kids, as they require very gentle handling. Small children, who might be very excited about their new pet, may inadvertently handle their rabbits too roughly, thus scaring them and causing them to act out.

Q A

What makes a good rabbit owner?

A good rabbit owner is generally an older child or adult who has the time and resources to give their rabbit the care it needs. They are diligent about taking their pet in for check-ups with a specialized rabbit veterinarian who is knowledgeable about rabbit care. They have plenty of room in their homes for their animal to move around in, provide a diet high in hay and salad with a limited amount of pellets, and give their pet a minimum of a 4x4 space for housing.

Q A

Where can I adopt one?

To find a rabbit rescue group, you can first get in touch with your local animal shelter such as

Skippy All About Rabbits. Make sure you do your research on the organization, and find out how well they take care of the animals and what the adoption process is like. If it doesn’t seem like they do their research on who’s adopting their animals, consider it a red flag.

Q A

Why is adopting better than buying?

There are many benefits to adopting instead of shopping. These include: • Your rabbit is already litter box trained, microchipped, and spayed/neutered • A first visit to the vet is sometimes included • You’ll get support post-adoption from the rescue or shelter • Your rabbit has the opportunity to be socialized at the shelter • You’ll know that you aren’t supporting animal mills or bad breeders. • Rabbits can be a wonderful addition to your home. If you feel that you’d like to add one to your family, consider adopting a rabbit this month. Dr. Shachar Malka is a vet at Long Island Birds & Exotics Veterinary Clinic in Great Neck.

blue. MARCH 14 - JULY 5, 2020 What color means more to us than blue? By far the most popular hue, blue casts its spell, pushing beyond symbolism to a deeper emotional level, drawing us into its pure and distant mysteries. From the sunny Mediterranean blues of Henri Matisse and Yves Klein to the haunting moonlight of Odilon Redon and Pablo Picasso, the exhibition taps the depths of Western and Eastern sources. Blue connects history and geography, from precious works of antiquity to paintings, prints, photographs, sculpture, ceramics, cyanotypes, glass and even a United Nations flag and helmet.

Highly valued lapis lazuli and cobalt have been traded along the Silk Road (a spectacular suite of Japanese prints responds to the newly imported Prussian blue ink). In addition to contemporary art by Mark Innerst, James Casebere, Jeffrey Gibson and others (including some works made especially for the show), we will host a ballet and a concert commissioned by the Museum and a panel discussion convening leading minds in religion. As Miró said, “This is the color of my dreams.”

MUSIC

The Universal Language BY ANTHONY MURRAY AND DAVE GIL DE RUBIO

amurray@antonmediagroup.com / dgilderubio@antonmediagroup.com

Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once famously said music is the universal language of mankind and at Anton Media Group we’re definitely fluent when it comes to music. This past year, Long Island Weekly has talked to many of your favorite musicians from solo artists such as Lenny Kravitz, Andy Grammer, David Crosby, Aaron Neville and Melissa Etheridge to bands that include Fitz and the Tantrums, Goo Goo Dolls, Train, Daughtry and Chicago. Lenny Kravitz

Recorded at his home studio in Eleuthera, Bahamas, Kravitz’s eleventh studio album Raise Vibration was conceived through a series of dreams. Call it a stream-of-unconsciousness. “All these songs came from being asleep and waking up between the hours of 3 and 5 a.m. and having these songs in my head. It was a very interesting experience. And it was very freeing. You take your mind, ego and whatever preconceived ideas you have—all of that comes out. You’re receiving what it is that is yours and I love that.”

Andy Grammer

Grammer stopped by the Big Apple for his Don’t Give Up On Me tour to promote his fourth studio album Naïve. Grammer opened up about the driving force that was behind the creation of his newest album. “At heart, I was trying to make an album that was for people who are optimistic,” Grammer said. “I’ve been saying it’s a lot like the light bringer situation. It’s people who see the good in everything and when you are one of those people, the world looks at you like you’re stupid. I love the title of Naïve, which sounds like a revolutionary statement of ‘I don’t care if you think I’m stupid. I’m going to see the good in this world.’”

Melissa Etheridge

As an avowed lefty, suffice it to say that the 2016 election wasn’t quite the result Melissa Etheridge was expecting. With her 15th studio album, The Medicine Show, Etheridge used all of 2017 to put together notebooks full of inspirational ideas with the album serving as a microcosm of what

was going on in 2018. “It’s times like this where I see that music and art can do so much. As a way to look at this, I have no desire to preach to anybody. But I do want to reach into the hearts and minds of people and really give hope and find a way to inspire everyone through all this.”

Fitz and the Tantrums

The band Fitz and the Tantrums have been going strong for the past decade and recently dropped their fourth studio album All The Feels last year. The lead singer of the band, Michael Fitzpatrick, talked about how the band came to be. “It was five phone calls and I had a band together,” Fitzpatrick said. “We went into a rehearsal space and we played one song. I was so blown away that I walked out of the room and booked us a show at the Hotel Café in Los Angeles. We played our first show a week later and we haven’t stopped touring since.”

Daughtry

Chris Daughtry shot to superstardom overnight thanks to a little talent show called American Idol. Daughtry and his band, released their fifth studio album Cage to Rattle last year. One of the songs on the new album, “As You Are” has sentimental meaning to Daughtry, which he shared about. “That song to me was the heart and soul of the record,” Daughtry said. “My wife and I wrote the song in 2015. I believed in this song from the very beginning and I wanted it to see the light of day. It was the song that means a lot to us and we’re so glad to be getting the response that we’re getting from it.”

Train

What better way to celebrate 20 years of music than going on tour? That’s exactly what the band Train did last year. Besides being lead singer of the band, Pat Monahan opened up about hosting his own weekly radio show on SiriusXM titled Train Tracks. “I feel like new artists need a place to go to find their way,” Monahan said. “I just think it’s super important what I’m doing and I never really felt that way about anything before until now and I’ve been thanked by artists all over the world who say, ‘Thanks for giving me a shot. I didn’t think I would ever get played.’ It just seems like a cool thing.”

Goo Goo Dolls

Consummate road warriors, Goo Goo Dolls never lost the blue-collar ethic of hard work despite crossing over from being a scrappy punk outfit to a popular poprock act. Out on the road with their friends Train last year, Goos vocalist John Rzeznick shared his love for playing Northwell at Jones Beach, the local stop his band made last year. “Jones Beach is one of the first really big places this band ever got to play. And it was so exciting—to look at the top of the stands and see people up that high in the seats. It blew my mind man. We’ve had so many great shows there—getting poured on by the rain. Then it’s 100 degrees outside. Everyone just has a great time. I love it.”

Chicago

Still thriving five decades on, founding member Robert Lamm shared his theory behind the group’s longevity. “The songs. The music. Obviously, the sound of the band is appealing to a lot of people. The way the horns are used is very different than what other bands do. The idiosyncrasies of the way [they sound]—and believe me, I really had a chance to consider that when we did Chicago II. Those aren’t even songs—those are compositions.”

People from all over the world flock to New York City to see Broadway shows—and for totally good reason. New York City has some of the best Broadway shows around from Ain’t Too Proud and Hadestown to Beetlejuice, Jagged Little Pill and more. This past year, we’ve seen and spoken to some of the brightest and best performers the Great White Way has to offer. hilarious musical that tells the story of Lydia Deetz, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon named Beetlejuice. With an irreverent book, an astonishing set and a score that’s out of this Netherworld, Beetlejuice was sure to be a real scream on Broadway. The ghoulish musical embraces the topic of death and has no problem breaking the fourth wall as it Ain’t Too Proud pelts audiences with a constant Ain’t Too Proud chronicles how stream of comedy. Motown group The Temptations shot into superstardom. The musical gives the audience a deep dive into The Temptations’ journey from the streets of Detroit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. With their signature dance moves and unmistakable harmonies, the crooners rose to the top of the charts creating an amazing 42 Top 10 hits, with 14 of them reaching number one. The thrilling story of brotherhood, family, loyalty and betrayal is Chicago set to the beat of the group’s A Manhattan institution, treasured hits including “My Chicago has everything that Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” “Get Ready,” “Papa Was a Rolling makes Broadway great—a universal tale of fame, fortune and Stone” and more. all that jazz, one show-stopping song after another and the most Beetlejuice astonishing dancing one has Based on Tim Burton’s beloved film, Beetlejuice is a

ever seen. Chicago has wowed audiences all around the world from Mexico City and Moscow to São Paulo and South Africa. Whether you’re looking for your first Broadway musical, seen the Academy Award-winning film, want to experience the show live onstage or have seen it all before and want to recapture the magic, Chicago delivers on every level.

Jagged Little Pill

Inspired by singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette’s Grammy Award-winning masterpiece, Jagged Little Pill, this production uses explosive choreography and the raw power of an onstage band to create a spellbinding musical experience that lifts its audience from moments of quiet, tender intimacy to pure rock ‘n’ roll release. The result is an electric, fearless look at what it means to be alive in 21st Century America and an urgent call for us to come together even as the world pushes us apart.

Tootsie

Hadestown

Hadestown intertwines two mythic tales—that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone—as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and director Rachel Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers and singers, Hadestown is a haunting and hopeful experience that grabs the audience and never lets go.

Tootsie, which ended its run on Jan. 5 of this year, was based on the 1982 comedy of the same name. Like the film, Tootsie tells the story of a talented but volatile actor, whose reputation for being difficult forces him to adopt a new identity as a woman in order to land a job. The musical featured a Tony Award-winning book by Robert Horn and an outrageously clever score by 2018 Tony winner David Yazbek.

FILM

Silver Screen Stars BY ANTHONY MURRAY AND DAVE GIL DE RUBIO

amurray@antonmediagroup.com / dgilderubio@antonmediagroup.com

If cinema is something between art and life, as famed director Jean-Luc Godard once said, then we at the Anton Media Group have been fortunate enough to speak with some true artists such as the likes of Rita Moreno, Andrea Martin, Chazz Palminteri and more within this big screen world of make believe.

Rita Moreno A (KEGOT) Kennedy Center Honors, Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony winner, Rita Moreno is a legendary talent who continues to work, despite having turned 88 in December. Not only is she working on the Steven Spielberg cinematic reboot of West Side Story, but expect a documentary on her life this year drawn from her 2014 autobiography, Rita Moreno: A Memoir. She’ll be sharing some of the emotionally trying times she faced as a woman of color in Tinsel Town. “People only know what they see at the moment and that’s understandable. Why should they know I had terrible times in my youth? Why should they known that when I went to Hollywood that it was a really bad time for Hispanics, blacks, Asians and everybody? But they don’t know that, so it was important for me to talk about that.”

Andrea Martin

Nowadays best known for stage work that’s won her Tony and Drama Desk Awards, Andrea Martin made her mark on television as a key member of the Canadian comedy series SCTV. Interestingly enough, Martin shared that non-musical comedy was something she came to a bit late in life. 211816C

FILM FILM from page 8B “I’ve done musical comedies, such as South Pacific and Oklahoma!, in summer stock and I’ve done dinner theater in Toronto and they were all little comedic musical presentations, but until I got involved with Second City, which then turned into SCTV, I never did sketch comedy before or stand up or anything in that variety.”

Luis Guzmán

Far more than a character actor, Luis Guzmán has considered himself a social activist dating back to his childhood growing up on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Having established himself over the years in myriad roles, most recently on the Showtime series Shameless, next year will see him looking to work on a passion project of his—a film adaptation of the Ernesto Quiñones novel, Bodega Dreams. “Bodega Dreams has been out about 18 years and

gone through many hands. I’ve had it for the past Sebastian Maniscalco three years and I think that I found a writer/director, When he’s not selling out Madison Square who I can’t name,” he said. “It’s an incredible book. AN ANTON MEDIA GROUP SPECIAL

Cruising Santa Monica A family-friendly trip through Southern California BY MADELINE SCHEIER specialsections@antonmediagroup.com

Sometimes, you just have to grab the kids and go. As a busy family of four and no stranger to the daily grind of work and school, a rare week with no classes or business meetings was just what we needed to get away. With warmer weather in mind, we set our sights on the West Coast, specifically the areas of Santa Monica and Los Angeles. We decided to forgo the typical kid-friendly destinations like Disney and Universal Studios in order to check out the other charms Southern California has to offer. see SANTA MONICA on page 20A

SANTA MONICA from page 19A After fueling up for a day that promised a lot of walking, we headed west from our hotel in Marina del Rey and walked along the marina until the stunning Venice Beach Pier came into view. There, the view of the Pacific Ocean is truly amazing as the water, mountains and clouds merge together like a gorgeous postcard. It’s not just the scenic views that make the pier unlike anything else. Venice Beach takes people-watching to new heights. The beach welcomes surfers, selfie-taking tourists, rollerbladers and people from all walks of life. Inclusivity is something ingrained in the sand. Nowhere is more exemplary of that than at Muscle Beach, which got its start in the late 1930s when a young couple began lifting weights on the beach. Soon other exercise enthusiasts, gymnasts, weightlifters and bodybuilders followed suit. Today, Muscle Beach draws quite an eclectic crowd. A three-mile walk later, we arrived at the landmark Santa Monica Pier and Pacific Park. Slightly more upscale than funky, laid-back Venice, the Santa Monica Pier is home to the iconic Pacific Wheel. Bright and commanding, it is the world’s first solar-powered ferris wheel and truly the star of Pacific Park. If the ferris wheel looks familiar,

it should. It’s been featured in more than a thousand movies, television shows, commercials, music videos and ads. The nearby Third Street Promenade is a worthy stop. The open-air pavilion is a hub of outdoor shopping and dining that comes alive with street performers. Check out the Venice Canals when you’re visiting Venice Beach. The canals were the brainchild of New Jersey businessman turned LA transplant, Abbot Kinney, who purchased the land to build the canals in 1905. It’s a little bit off the beaten path but promises to be unlike any other neighborhood you’ve ever visited. The canals are tucked away among homes and connected by footpath bridges. Each one has a different personality, and the homes are unique, as well. We self-toured and afterwards hiked over to Abbot Kinney Boulevard, (named after the businessman). The mile-long strip is home to trendy restaurants, bars, art galleries, ice cream spots and funky boutiques. It’s very hip with plenty of vegan spots and food trucks (that our 20-something sons enjoyed) that line the street. At Salt & Barrel, an ice cream shop that whips up its flavors by hand with local ingredients, we waited on a line that wrapped around the corner. I had Chocolate Gooey Brownie, and it was worth the

wait. Kayaking on Marina del Rey’s Mother’s Beach is a great opportunity to relax and bond with nature. At this peaceful 12-acre lagoon, Daniel from Pro SUP Shop set us up with kayaks and gave us a push off. You can also choose to do stand-up paddle boarding. Kayaking along the water mid-morning was serene, as we watched the boats come and go and kept our eyes peeled for the sea lions that hang out at the dock. We didn’t see any that morning, but we heard they’re regulars and they enjoy sunbathing on the docks and diving in and out of the water. We had to include some touristy activities so we ubered over to The Hollywood Walk of Fame where the famous Grauman’s Chinese Theatre holds court. It was renamed TCL Chinese Theatre in 2013, but still resembles the glamorous and glitzy theater that opened in 1927. The 15 blocks that encompass the Hollywood Walk of Fame (a good starting point is at the Ghirardelli Shop at 6834 Hollywood Blvd.) were teeming with tourists so we joined the crowd, checking out the stars at our feet. It was fun to see the Hollywood stars from our childhood days (Lucille Ball), teen years (Phil Collins) and present day (Billy Joel). The whole scene is truly a spectacle

with all walks of life, including street performers, tourists and even some creative entrepreneurs who will personalize a Hollywood Walk of Fame star with your name. It’s like Times Square; you must visit at least once. High up in the mountains, at 1,134-feet is the beautiful Griffith Observatory, which sits atop Griffith Park. It’s the most-visited public observatory in the world (1.5 million visitors a year) and admission is free. At the top of Griffith Observatory is the absolute best vantage point to see the world-famous Hollywood sign and take in the enormity of what lies below: Los Angeles. It’s open until 10 p.m. for night-time stargazing. To get to the observatory, start out at the bottom of Griffith Park. We chose to hike the Boy Scout Trail, which hugged the mountain on one side and the other offered a dizzying view of Los Angeles. Be careful hiking up, there’s no guard rail to protect you from tumbling down. After the 20-minute hike, we were rewarded with the beautiful observatory, which includes a state of the art, immersive planetarium, free telescope viewing, a mountain-top café, and endless jaw-dropping grounds to stroll around. Check out the original 12-inch Zeiss refracting telescope. It’s

located on the rooftop dome of the building and best for nighttime viewing, more than seven million people have put their eye to the sky. What is In-N-Out Burger’s secret, and why is it such an LA thing that so many famous actors and actresses admit to scarfing down a burger after the Emmys or Oscars? We were determined to find out. Lucky for us, there was an In-NOut Burger a few miles away from our hotel in Marina del Rey. We skipped the drive-thru and dined inside the retro-looking shop (made to look like the originals, which were founded in 1948). We ordered our double burgers and fries “animal style.” Animal style consists of lettuce, tomato, pickle, cheese, tons of grilled onion and extra spread, which is a special sauce that tastes like Thousand Island dressing. If you want to feel like a true LA local, make a detour for In-N-Out and order up some fries and double burgers, animal style. One day, we rented a car and took a road trip to Santa Barbara. Tucked away about 90 miles from Santa Monica is the idyllic city named “The Queen of Missions.” Sitting pretty between the mountains and the sea, history-filled Santa Barbara boasts Spanish Colonial and Mexican-era adobe structures. Check out the landmark 1,950 foot Stearns Wharf (California’s oldest working wharf and the world’s longest deep-water wharf between San Pedro and San Francisco), as it stretches out over the Pacific Ocean. At the end of the pier,

Manhattan Beach is rumored to be the new Malibu for spotting celebs. We admired the gorgeous multi-million dollar homes that are nestled practically on top of the ocean and caught a stunning sunset. Will The Second Time Be A Charm For The City Of Glen Cove Ferry? Despite the City of Glen Cove awarding a contract to Hornblower Metro Ferry LLC., there are still many unresolved questions. In late January, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced the opportunity to apply for approximately $30 million in fiscal year 2020 competitive grant funding for passenger ferry projects nationwide. The passenger ferry grant program is authorized by Congress for projects that develop and support ferry service on many of the nation’s waterways, including the purchase, repair and modernization of ferry boats, terminal and related facilities that communities depend on. The FTA will award competitive grants to states and public entities for all of the above, plus supporting existing ferry service and the establishment of new passenger ferry service. Will the City of Glen Cove apply for these potential funds? The City of Glen Cove will start a ferry service in May. This requires providing $3.1 million in operating subsidies to Hornblower Metro Ferry. With only one boat, there will only

PENNER STATION Larry Penner

be two trips to and from 34th Street during rush hours. Contrast that with the LIRR, which provides six morning peak and six evening peak trains. New York State Senator Jim Gaughan is lobbying the MTA to increase Oyster Bay branch service. This will entice more people to ride the LIRR leaving fewer potential ferry customers. NICE bus provides eight N21 route trips during the morning and 5 p.m. rush hour trips originating in the City of Glen Cove. They require an easy transfer at the Great Neck LIRR station before connecting to the N20 Flushing bus. This requires another transfer at Main Street, Flushing to board the No. 7

If East Side access to Penn Station is up and running by the end of December 2022, many potential ferry riders may elect to stay with the LIRR for access to midtown Manhattan. Commuters frequently make decisions based on frequency of service options, time of trip required to reach final destination and farebox costs. If the new Glen Cove ferry service offers far fewer trips to select from, transfers are inconvenient, travel time is too long and the price is not competitive with the LIRR, it may be doomed to failure due to poor ridership, just like previous private operators. Larry Penner is a transportation historian and advocate who previously worked 31 years for the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Transit Administration Region 2 office. This included the development, review, approval and oversight for grants supporting billions in capital projects and programs on behalf of the MTA, NYC Transit, LIRR and Metro North, MTA bus, New Jersey Transit and NYC Department of Transportation Staten Island Ferry, along with 30 other transit agencies in New York and New Jersey.

subway. This subway ride provides direct access to Hudson Yards and midtown Manhattan. You also have the option to board the LIRR in Great Neck for a 30-minute trip to Penn Station. It may have made no sense for the operator not to have considered adding intermediate stops in Queens, such as Bayside, Fort Totten, College Point, Flushing Marina, LaGuardia Airport, Long Island City or Astoria. Thousands of residents from Northeast Queens’ two fare zones are willing to pay premium fares for NYC Transit express bus or LIRR services. Many would do the same for a new ferry service versus driving or taking a local bus or subway for journeys to work. How many commuters will want to transfer at the East 34th Street Ferry Terminal for a second boat destined for Pier 11 in the Financial District? Many current LIRR riders continue to prefer a one seat ride or transfer at Jamaica followed by a second transfer to the subway at either Atlantic Terminal, Brooklyn, Penn Station, Manhattan or Hunters Point, Queens.

INTERNATIONAL WORD FIND

ARIES (March 21-April 19). When someone says, “Let’s unpack this...” what they mean is that they care enough to really understand you, or that they are ready to judge you, depending on the person. This week, you’re ready to open yourself up to the right people, and you’re paying attention so that you’ll know who those people are. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). This week, your life will be like a game of chess. Once another person makes a move, it will seem automatic and normal to make a countermove. In fact, if you don’t react, stagnation sets in. The game must progress. Your ability to see a few plays ahead will give you an advantage. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Beauty sends the human spirit airborne. This is why people pay the big-ticket price for a ballet, art or gorgeous fashion pieces. Make no mistake, you don’t have to pay. Costless beauty is everywhere this week, in trees, skies, a loved one’s eyes, in smiles. Get your fill of the free stuff! CANCER (June 22-July 22). From the annals of simplistic, redundant, mundane wisdoms: “What’s done is done” and “it is what it is.” Perhaps these are lazy ways of saying, “Accept and move on.” In the name of progress, lazy is fine; effort would be wasted. These simple truisms make way for a no-drama, keep-walking approach. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). It takes confidence to be unassuming. Pride and boastfulness, on the other hand, signal low self-esteem. There’s a balance to be struck in such matters. How can you convince yourself and others that you can handle things without trying too hard to prove it? The answer is to relax and accept yourself. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). To talk about the satisfying, enjoyable and wonderful events of your life will lift and charge you as long as it’s to the right audience. To share with people who are on your side and who will take what you say in the spirit intended will bring a state of well-being to all. To share with envious types will bring trouble. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You’ll pose questions so excellent that they will oxygenate rooms. Your questions will invite creativity, teamwork and solutions that, as brilliantly inventive as you are, you wouldn’t have come up with on your own. Your gift for leadership will shine through the astute nature of your questions. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). What once made you feel pressured is now quite easy for you, which is positive on many levels. For one, you have a great deal of empathy for those who are less experienced, and for another, you are in a position to teach and help. In any regard, you are ready to move to the next stage of work. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). For some reason, you’ve come to think of certain health-promoting practices and accoutrements as luxuries and treats to be doled out only when you are extremely flush, in dire need or when you have worked extra hard to earn the reward. The problem? Your excellent health is an essential, not a luxury. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Negativity bias is a function of our brains, and we are not the only animals wired to think this way. However, unlike other animals, we are uniquely poised to choose different thoughts. If to ruminate on the negative is human, then to ruminate on the positive is superhuman. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). The types of opportunities available will not be the sort that come along every day or even once a season. Avoid later regret by answering definitively, and out of intuition rather than fear. Whatever happens, the most important thing is that you accept and embrace that, knowing it was right for the time. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Focus on where you’re going. This will be better than most other lines of thought that will come automatically this week such as how you’re feeling, what the other person is doing or how you’re going to get there. Stay focused on the destination, and everything will fall into place.

Saving Taxpayers’ Money Through Shared Services

After a year-long effort, Nassau County has completed our Shared Services and Taxpayer Savings Plan for 2020. My shared service panel is a group of more than 100 Nassau County and municipal leaders brought together to identify and implement new ways to save taxpayers money through shared and more efficient services between local governments within the county. Whether it’s joint purchasing or the sharing of equipment and personnel, we should always be looking for ways to save our taxpayers money. I’m grateful to the Rockefeller Institute of Government and the Benjamin Center for their help preparing the document based on the work of our Shared Services Panel. And I’m happy to say we’ve identified ways to cut costs through cooperation. We know when we work together, we do better. Now, we know specific ways to save money. Based on conservative estimates, the plan contains potential annual savings of more than $7 million in 2020, growing to $28 million when fully implemented in 2022. If the proposals are adopted by most of Nassau’s municipalities and school districts, the

EXECUTIVE TAKE Laura Curran

savings could be greater. The Nassau County Legislature approved a draft of the plan. We must implement this to unlock savings. Nassau is a perfect place to share resources because of our size and number of government entities. The county features 70 municipal governments, two cities, three towns and 64 villages. We also have 56 school districts and various special taxing districts. That’s why I’m making sure Nassau takes the lead in coming up with ways to work together. From joint procurement services to record storage and shared information technology services, we’ve found ways municipalities can lend a hand to each other and save residents money. In the end, it’s

all about being cost-effective and using our resources to the fullest. One of the largest areas of savings we found was the creation of the “Nassau Saves Online Intermunicipal Shared Services Portal,” which would facilitate and expand joint purchasing, equipment sharing and sharing information technology services. We found we could save $1.2 million in 2020, $2.5 million in 2021 and $5.3 million in recurring savings through a shared services portal. This portal will help with centralized contracts that local governments could use to buy vehicle and heating fuel, road materials, specialty equipment and office supplies, as well as centralized contracts for things like training. We also concluded that “Digitize Nassau,” a joint effort to digitize mandated records, could save $140,000 in 2020, $630,000 in 2021 and $1 million in recurring savings. Storage and maintenance of governmental records is a collaborative opportunity not only for tax savings but for more transparent and efficient management of records. We identified $1.2 million in potential 2020 savings, along with $1.8 million in 2021 and $4.3 million

in recurring savings from Shared Information Technology Services. We could help each other achieve more efficient service at a lower cost for information technology, telecommunications, software, hardware, network management and IT security. Enhanced energy efficiency programs will cut energy costs and are estimated to generate the greatest savings of $2.1 million in 2020, $2.8 million in 2021 and $6.3 million in recurring savings. The county plans to develop a group of local governments for the collaborative purchase of natural gas and coordinate advocacy to push for the state to permit municipalities to collaborate to buy electric power. School districts and Nassau BOCES indicated an interest in joint waste removal/recycling initiatives. Nassau plans to develop, if it proves feasible, a county-wide centralized contract to maintain municipal vehicles. We’re going to continue working to implement this plan. We now have a road map for shared services and we’re ready to head down this road that benefits not just the county, but municipal government and our residents.

FOOD FIGHT

NEW YORK

Pizza Battle Is Chicago-style pizza better than New York-style pizza? BY STEVE MOSCO AND CHRISTY HINKO editorial@antonmediagroup.com

There’s a reason why Chicagoans love their precious Chicago-style pizza. It’s because their bodies require thick bricks of mozzarella cheese in order to survive the Windy City’s freakish sub-zero temperatures. Honestly, there’s no other reason I can think of why anyone would choose Chicago-style pizza over the one true pizza, the classic New York slice. Chicago-style pizza exists in a culinary off-kilter world between an Italian casserole and tomato stew—a gooey mess reined in only by a nearly three-inch wall of burnt crust that is somehow almost raw at the base of the “pizza.” Each bite is a doughy, soupy mess that’s as embarrassing to eat as it is to claim it as anything other than a Midwest novelty dish.

New York-Style Pizza

T

hen there’s New York pizza. Where Chicago-style pizza is a baseball bat to the side of the face, New York pizza is the gentle embrace of the always reliable love of your life. It’s a constant in the ever-changing landscape of New York itself. The city is an impossibly expensive and utterly infuriating place to live and yet pizza, its signature food, is graciously affordable and universally cherished. From the thin, crisp crust that’s been imbued with the miraculous elements of New York State’s water, to the sweetly savory sauce and perfectly proportioned melty mozzarella cheese, New York pizza is the foldable, portable lifeblood of the

city itself. Let’s take a moment to recognize the construction of a proper New York pizza. Aside from a few noble variations from local legends (Spumoni Gardens in Brooklyn, consider yourself seen), cheese goes on top of the sauce. And you know what goes on top of the cheese? Toppings! Sausage or pepperoni or whatever are all arranged on top of the pizza, where they were meant to be displayed. Chicago, you are supposedly so proud of your sausage—why then have you chosen to forsake and suffocate it under a mound of cheese and a pool of tepid sauce? Shameful. New Yorkers take pride in their pizza. After all, everyone’s

favorite late-night food got its start in this country right here in 1905, when Gennuardo Lombardi opened the first American pizza shop on Spring Street. Since then, enterprising pizza artists have taken the original and made it their own—sometimes with a delicious sense of reverence like in New Haven, CT, and sometimes with a perverse absurdism like in Chicago. As citizens of New York, we know our pizza is the absolute best; that’s why there are so many pizzerias all over every borough and across Long Island. Chicago, on the other hand, must constantly defend its hot

abomination because deep down it knows its deep-dish crime against humanity is anything but pizza. Why do you think it’s called Chicago-style pizza where New York’s version is just called pizza? The “style” qualifier signifies that what you’re eating is a twisted take on actual pizza. The next time you ask yourself, “Is Chicago-style pizza actually pizza?” try to imagine picking up a hunk of floppy, saucy, cheesy lasagna and eating it with your hands. Now, rid yourself of that disconcerting image and grab a real slice of New York pizza.

CHICAGO

FOOD FIGHT

Chicago-Style Pizza OK, OK, you can have the title for bagels and cheesecake, but hot dogs and pizza, especially...we keep. Maybe water is the secret to good bagels, but it’s not doing anything for the taste of New York pizza, which is like gnawing at cardboard mostly. True story. I moved to New York in 2001. When my parents first came to visit, of course their first request for a night-of-arrival, quick dinner was pizza. I pleaded with them, “Pick anything else. I will not serve New York pizza to people who know what pizza is supposed to taste like.” We settled for White Castle (which are prepared wrong in New York too, but that’s a whole separate food feature by itself). In 19 years, I think I have allowed them to eat New York pizza twice during their annual visits and it was because we were desperate. So, let’s talk about DA Chicago Deep Dish. Yes, it’s delicious. Yes, you need a fork and knife to eat it. Yes, it is real pizza, albeit closer to the category of

pie. That’s our pizza showpiece, a real culinary delight when the waitress brings that piping pan to the table and saws through layer after layer of cheese and sausage and peppers and whatever else you can imagine adding to your pie delight. She drops that pie-cut piece of heaven onto your plate and you say, “Whoa!” Here’s one truth. We reserve that for you. We reserve that as your tourist experience in Chicago. You’re welcome. So you say to yourself, “Then Christy, what do real Chicagoans eat for pizza?” I’ll tell yous. It’s a thin crust, similar to what you know as pizza. It’s a big ol’ circular pizza, never served as a single slice because it’s so good, you want the whole pizza. It’s a round pizza, cut into squares. That’s right, into squares. And if you understand the anatomy of the Chicago square-cut pizza, you know that it produces four triangle-cut corners which are coveted choices for the first bites into the pizza. The

square-cut pizza has something for everyone: crust and crustless pieces, both equally good. The crust pieces help you hold onto and savor the flavorful toppings layered over tomatoey goodness. The crustless... that’s for true pizza warriors. No steering, no safety net...you just take your chances and trust your eating talents and enjoy getting a little of the good stuff dripping down your hand and wrist. I notice three glaring differences between Chicago and New York pizza. Let’s talk cheese. I never remember ever having to ask for extra cheese in Chicago; I don’t even think “extra cheese” is a thing in Chicago because every inch of surface is adequately covered with cheese. If I can still see crust, you haven’t done your job, New York cheese-putter-onner. And frankly, that happens way too often. Help your tasteless crust; stop skimping on the cheese.

Two, the Italian sausage. The first time I ordered sausage on my New York pizza, I stared at it for a while and then took it back up to the counter to ask, “What’s this bland, sliced thing across my pizza? I asked for sausage.” When you bite into uncased, bite-sized, crumbled Italian sausage on a Chicago pizza, you know it. The flavor pops with oregano and fennel, as it should. Lastly, the secret is in the sauce. Chicago pizza sauce is sweetened to make that tomato flavor burst in your mouth. Its flavor is as important as any of the toppings and not just something smeared across to make the crust easier to choke down. In order to maintain good friendships with a couple of professional pizza makers, I’ll reserve sharing which restaurants around the area do serve tolerable pizza and my go-to choices if pizza is really the only option.

BOOKS Journalists competed with novelists to best capture the city’s frenetic pace. Studs Terkel was a broadcast journalist who, like Bellow, immortalized the city in such thick classics as Division Street (1967) and Working (1974), in which average Chicagoans talked into the tape recorder to tell the joys and anguish of everyday life in the imperial city. Mike Royko, the longtime newspaper columnist, also captured the city’s color in thousands of columns, some collected in such volumes as Sez Who? Sez Me (1983) and Like I Was Sayin’ (1985). Royko’s 1971 biography of longtime mayor Richard Daly, Boss, became another instant classic. Central to the city’s intellectual life is the University of Chicago. The South Side-based institution has boasted numerous intellectuals vital to the growth of conservative thought in the United States. Its faculty has included such Nobel Prize Laureates as Milton Friedman and Frederick von Hayek, both of whom championed free market economics in a Keynesian age, and in the process changed the world’s mind about how next to achieve prosperity. Other University of Chicago professors who fought a rearguard action for the traditional West were Leo Strauss, Edwards Shils, Richard

Univeristy of Chicago Weaver and Allan Bloom. Weaver’s Ideas Have Consequences (1948) became a defining text in the bid to attract traditionalists and libertarians under the same conservative banner. Bloom’s 1987 best seller The Closing Of The American Mind put the author at ground central of the coming culture wars of the 1990s and beyond. The university, under the legendary leadership of Robert Hutchins, became famous for championing the “Great Books” pro-Western curriculum, which became the source of both its

fame and controversy. Also central to American conservatism was the Chicago-based Regnery Gateway publishing house, which introduced the public to such prolific authors as Russell Kirk and William F. Buckley, Jr. before making the move to the more prosperous pastures of Washington, DC. Recent decades have seen the rise of such bestselling authors as Scott Turow, plus James Atlas, Bellow’s first major biographer. A most prolific author has been the essayist, Joseph

Epstein. A literary and cultural critic, Epstein has been a keen, if somber, observer of American life for decades, culminating in his longtime editorship of The American Scholar. His many thought-provoking books include Essays In Biography (2012) and A Literary Education (2014). Life in Chicago, Bellow once maintained, is an ongoing high wire act. Will the city make it or eventually collapse? Plenty of writers will be chronicling the city’s trajectory as the years unwind.

ports have always been held in high regard in Chicago. It is one of only 10 U.S. cities to have teams from all five of the major American professional team sports (baseball, football, basketball, hockey, soccer). Chi-Town has been named as the Best Sports City by Sporting News three times, in 1993, 2006 and 2010. While it lost out to Rio de Janeiro to be the host city of the 2016 Summer Olympics, it did host the 1959 Pan American Games, the 2006 Gay Games, as well as the 1968 and 1970 Special Olympics Summer World Games and the 2017 Warrior Games. Here are the teams that make the City by the Lake tick.

Chicago Blackhawks

Founded in 1926, the Blackhawks are an Original Six NHL franchise and currently compete in the Central Division of the Western Conference. The Hawks have won the Stanley Cup six times (1933, 1937, 1960, 2009, 2012 and 2014) and have called the United Center home since 1995. Players who’ve had their numbers retired are Glenn Hall, Keith Magnuson, Pierre Pilote, Bobby Hull, Dennis Savard, Stan Mikita and Tony Esposito. Franchise favorites include Doug Wilson, Steve Larmer, Jeremy Roenick, Chris Chelios, Ed Belfour and Tony Amonte. Veteran stars currently leading the team include Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Brent Seabrook and Duncan Keith.

Chicago White Sox

Chicago’s MLB franchises have storied histories, with the American League Central’s South Side Sox being founded in 1900. The Sox were the White Stockings from 1900 through 1903 before latching onto their current name. The team once called “The Hitless Wonders” have won the World Series three times: 1906, 1917 and 2005. Predating the current Astros cheating scandal was the Black Sox scandal, which involved eight members of the team intentionally losing the 1919 World Series in exchange for money from a mob gambling syndicate. The Sox retired numbers for Nellie Fox, Harold Baines, Luke Appling, Minnie Minoso, Luis Aparicio, Paul Konerko, Ted Lyons, Billy Pierce, Frank Thomas and Carlton Fisk. The team played at Comiskey Park from 1910 to 1990 and now call Guaranteed Rate Field home. Current stars are José Abreu, James McCann, Yoan Moncada, Tim Anderson, Elroy Jiménez and Lucas Giolito.

Chicago Cubs

The National League Central Cubs were founded in 1870 as the White Stockings and transitioned to the Colts and the Orphans before settling on their current name in 1903. The Cubbies won the World Series three times—in 1907, 1908 and 2016. The Lovable Losers nickname was earned the hard way—by inflicting a 108-year championship drought that

was the longest such occurrence in all major North American sports. During that time, there was plenty of heartbreak that included blowing a 17½-game lead to the eventual 1969 World Series champion New York Mets, choking to the San Diego Padres in the 1984 National League Championship Series and laying the blame for choking during the 2003 National League Championship Series against the Florida Marlins at the feet of fan Steve Bartman. The curse was finally broken when the Joe Maddon-led Cubs defeated the Cleveland Indians in the 2016 World Series. The Cubs have played at Wrigley Park since 1916 and retired the numbers of Ron Santo, Ryne Sandberg, Billy Williams, Ferguson Jenkins and Greg Maddux. Current team leaders are Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Kyle Schwarber, Kyle Hendricks, Jon Lester, Javier Báez, Willson Contreras and Yu Darvish.

Chicago Bears

The “Monsters of the Midway” play their home games at Soldier Field and first hit the gridiron back in 1920. They currently play in the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC). “Da Bears” have won eight NFL Championships (1921, 1932, 1933, 1940, 1941, 1943, 1946 and 1963) and one Super Bowl (XX in 1985). Halas’ influence led to the team being renamed the Bears in 1922, co-founding the NFL in 1920 and having had three separate stints coaching the team to a lifetime 324-151-31 (.671) record. Retired Bears numbers are for Halas, Bronko Nagurski, George McAfee, Willie Gallimore, Walter Payton, Gale Sayers, Brian Piccolo, Sid Luckman, Dick Butkus, Bill Hewitt, Bill George, Clyde Turner, Red Grange and Mike Ditka. Former Bears tight end Ditka coached the team to their sole Super Bowl victory which featured fan favorites Jim McMahon, Payton, Willie Gault, Richard Dent, Mike Singletary and William “Refrigerator” Perry. The current team is led by quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, Tarik Cohen, David Montgomery, Khalil Mack, Akiem Hicks and Allen Robinson.

Chicago Bulls

Playing in the Central Division of the National Basketball Association’s Eastern Conference, “Da Bulls” were founded in 1966. Hall of Famer Michael Jordan led his team to six championships in 1991 through 1993 and 1996 through 1998. Jordan is a five-time winner of the NBA Most Valuable Player, with Derrick Rose landing it in 2011. The Bulls have played at the United Center since 1994 and retired the numbers of Jerry Sloan, Bob Love, Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Phil Jackson, Johnny Kerr and Jerry Krause. Zach LaVine is the only current Bulls player of note worth mentioning.
