Robbie Robertson’s Testimony
New documentary tells his story of The Band

obbie Robertson has had quite the full dance card in the past seven months. Back in September, he released Sinematic, his sixth solo release, which featured contributions from Derek Trucks, Citizen Cope and Glen Hansard from the Irish group The Frames and his first set of original material since 2011’s How To Become Clairvoyant. This preceded the score he composed for friend Marty Scorsese’s Oscar-nominated mob film The Irishman in November. Currently, Robertson has been making the rounds promoting the recently wide-released Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and the Band, a Canadian documentary based on the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s 2016 memoir Testimony. Robertson has admittedly been riding quite a wave of creative activity. “This has all been so rewarding at this stage of my journey and this age—it’s been one of the busiest years of my life,” he said. Helmed by 24-year-old director Daniel Roher, Once Were Brothers got its start when a number of parties Robbie Robertson

approached Robertson about adapting his autobiography into a film. The company that wound up with the job was White Pine Pictures, a Canadian film company that had produced a number of projects, including a documentary on late classical music composer Glenn Gould that Robertson had seen and admired. Before long, Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Documentaries came on board and Scorsese offered to join the project as an executive producer. And while Robertson got some push-back on the young age of the film’s director, he had faith in Roher. Those later aforementioned developments confirmed Robertson’s gut instinct about the direction Once Were Brothers was headed in. “When Daniel Roher came along and said it was his wish to do a documentary based on Testimony, I checked him out, got a good feeling about it and said we should go with this guy,” Robertson said. “At first, everybody else that was involved with it said he was 24 years old and they wanted to know what he was going to do with this [project]. They didn’t think he knew about this period of time or my story. So I said that I just had a feeling and I just wanted to try it. So anyway, he was so dedicated
and involved and did a great job digging deep in finding the material and everything. It evolved into another place. Imagine Pictures came into it and then Martin Scorsese saw a rough cut of it and said he thought it was really going to be good and asked if I wanted him to help out and that he’d be happy to do that. So we were like, ‘Whoa, we’re getting somewhere.’” The film itself is a chronological ride that incorporates archival film and audio footage from the other members of The Band (Garth Hudson is the only surviving member. Richard Manuel passed away in 1986, Rick Danko in 1999 and Levon Helm in 2012). While the presence of high profile talking heads like Scorsese, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Eric Clapton gives the film a bit of a hagiographic tinge, it’s hard to argue when taking in the considerable impact of The Band. In addition to laying the groundwork for what became the Americana music decades before it even came into existence, these four Canadians and an American were accomplices in helping Dylan go electric. This was a controversial move from someone who had become a folk music icon and he was treated like a heretic when he started plugging in with help from The Band. Such was their influence that Clapton, who had made a name for himself as a guitar god via his work in the Cream power trio, sought out The Band in Woodstock in the hopes of trying to join their ranks. While The Band’s original lineup shot the 1976 documentary The Last Waltz as a means of bidding farewell to touring after being on the road together for 15 years, the group sans Robertson

It was just part of our world. regrouped in 1983 and soldiered on for another 16 years, releasing three more studio albums and finally breaking up following Danko’s 1999 death. In the aftermath of The Last Waltz, the deteriorating relations between Robertson and Hudson became more acrimonious, with the latter accusing his bandmate of commandeering the finances and direction of the group, which were addressed in This Wheel’s On Fire: Levon Helm and the Story of The Band, Helm’s 1993 autobiography penned with help from noted author Stephen Davis. And while detractors have not only spent years accusing Robertson of being self-aggrandizing, the tone of both his memoir and the recent documentary is one that involves a lot of shared credit and delight about the group’s adventures, along with a degree of sadness when times turned dark via the rock star tropes of drug abuse and bad behavior. It’s something Robertson readily admits he saw in both the writing of his book and creation of the film. “I found sadness in places,” he said. “I found much more joy and much [amazement] looking at what we went through. The fact that I’m still alive

Hudson apparently being MIA has been brought up by some critics who have seen the film. When asked about that, Robertson said Roher did track his former bandmate down, but came away empty. “[Daniel] worked really hard and was very determined to have Garth involved,” Robertson recounted. “He tried on different occasions, went to Woodstock, and it was set up to do something with Garth, but it didn’t work out. He kept pushing for it and pushing for it, and then he went back and met with Garth. I’m trying to be delicate about this—he tried to shoot some stuff with Garth and it didn’t work. Daniel felt bad. He didn’t want anything that didn’t make Garth look good. And Daniel thought his number one responsibility was respect for me and the guys in The Band. And he said—Garth had some things he’s dealing with. It wasn’t for lack of trying. I would have loved for Garth to be in there. Garth is so dear to me. Daniel said he did his best, but they couldn’t make it work.” With the different projects Robertson was working on simultaneously, the creative flow came together to influence what became Sinematic. This inspiration got to the point where Robertson painted different, often violent images, to go with each song in
the packaging. “I started out just thinking that I had some ideas for some songs, like you always do,” he said. “But then, when I stepped inside the zone for doing this, I was also beginning to work on The Irishman. Then, they were starting to work on this documentary. What happened, which has never happened to me before, was that all these things were starting to blend together and I was getting off on it. I just had one of the greatest musical journeys that I ever experienced making this record, because all of these pieces connected. I was writing about things from the early days that I remember, and because I’m writing Volume II of my memoir.” An avowed cinephile, expect plenty more from Robertson as we get deeper into 2020. “I really have to dig in on Volume II of this memoir,” Robertson said. “I’m just finishing up a piece of music that Eric Clapton and I did together that is so cool and I am going to start working on Martin Scorsese’s next film—Killers of the Flower Moon. And there are a ton of other things lurking around. I’ve got a feeling that it’s going to keep me out of trouble.” Visit www.longislandweekly.com to read about Robbie Robertson’s favorite filmmakers.

March Movie Previews The Hunt (R)
BY CHERYL WADSWORTH editorial@antonmediagroup.com
March is known for St. Patrick’s Day, Daylight Savings, Spring and of course March Madness. It’s also known for its unpredictable weather. What better place to keep warm than inside of a local movie theater. The following are just a few for you to choose from.
The Way Back (R) The film The Way Back came out in theaters on March 6, directed by Gavin O’Connor and starring Ben Affleck, Al Madrigal, Michaela Watkins, Janina Gavankar and Glynn Turman. Affleck returns to the screen in a pure case of art imitating real life as he portrays a
struggling alcoholic who was a high school basketball superstar. After being offered a coaching job at his old stomping grounds he must battle his demons with hopes of recovery. Affleck is a great actor and here’s hoping this movie puts him back on top.
On March 13, The Hunt debuts, directed by Craig Zobel and starring Betty Gilpin, Ike Barinholtz, Emma Roberts, Hilary Swank and Justin Hartley. The movie follows 12 strangers who all wake up on an island with no recollection of how they got there. A group of privileged people have brought them there for their entertainment, to hunt them one by one. However, one of the hunted turns the tables and begins to kill her assailants one by one. A typical thriller/horror premise that will keep you on the edge of your seat for a few hours.

I Still Believe (PG) Also on March 13, I Still Believe debuts in theaters, directed by Andrew Erwin and John Erwin and starring Britt Robertson, Melissa Roxburgh, K.J. Apa, Gary Sinise and Shania Twain. This true-life story is a Christian drama based on the life of Christian singer Jeremy Camp and his wife, Melissa’s diagnosis of ovarian cancer. Bring a box of tissues for this one.

Islanders Host Women In Sports Panel

SPORTS
Leaders from multiple sports share personal success stories BY JOSEPH WOLKIN

R
esilience. The powerful word was the perfect explanation for a group of six female sports executives who took to the stage on March 3 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. An anxious crowd awaited their arrival as these industry leaders prepared to share their stories about working in the sports realm. From shattering stereotypes to making names for theselves in male-dominated sports, this group of women has excelled, both on a professional and personal level. The folks with the New York Islanders wanted to inspire more women who want to make a name for themselves in sports, and they came together to inspire a group of people hungry for advice during the team’s Women in Sports Panel. The panel, led by MSG’s Shannon Hogan, discussed everything from how each of the half-dozen women made it to their current roles, what challenges they had along the way, their personal versus professional life and much more. Jessica Berman, the deputy commissioner of the National Lacrosse League, is the first woman to hold this high-ranking position in a professional American sports league. Despite the many obstacles she’s faced, she is now a leader in a male sports league. It’s something she doesn’t take lightly. “Brooklyn is a melting pot of diversity,” Berman said. “The NHL and the National Lacrosse League break down barriers.” Alongside Berman were Tara Gutkowski Schwartz, senior vice president of social responsibility for the NBA; Claudine Lilien, senior vice president for client solutions at Fox Sports; Deanne Pownall, managing director of partnership marketing at the USTA; Kimberly Davis, executive vice president of social impact, growth initiatives and legislative affairs for the NHL; and Susan Cohig, executive vice president of club business affairs for the NHL. Each of these women were and still are resilient. The term was placed above them throughout the hour-long talk, and it was mentioned multiple times.
‘‘
I think I was one of the first women as a young professional to wear pink shoes at my job.
’’
—Kimberly Davis
Less than 15 minutes into the panel, Davis took a moment to thank Berman for giving her a chance in the sports industry. But it turns out that Berman did the same, telling the crowd how she worked for Davis at one point. “It’s extremely helpful to find someone [a mentor] who can help champion you internally,” Lilien said. “It’s not just finding someone to tell you what to do, but someone who is a decision-maker in your world. It’s not just men and it’s not just women. I have young men and women coming to me for advice. Don’t just look for people who are further up on the career leader than you. It’s about surrounding people around you.” Seated in the last row was Islanders majority owner Jon Ledecky, who has touted the team’s efforts to become an leader in inclusivity in the work place. The six women agreed that one

doesn’t necessarily have to love sports at first before going in the industry. Additionally, they concurred that it might not be the worst thing for sports fans to start out in a different industry prior to making their way in sports realm. And it’s OK to be different, too. “I think I was one of the first women as a young professional to wear pink shoes at my job,” Davis said of one of her past experiences. “Everybody knew me for wearing vibrant colors.” Halfway through the panel, Hogan posed a question regarding misconceptions about women in sports. Cohig responded by saying there are just some things that aren’t true when you work in a male sport, like the NHL. Unlike in other areas, working in sports can enable people
to break stereotypes in more unique of ways. “Sport is the ultimate uniter,” Gutkowski Schwartz said. “It’s something you don’t see a lot. If you look at the work that we’re doing, it’s about increasing this common ground and unite people.” Prior to the conclusion of the panel, the six women discussed mental wellness, which is at the forefront of all forms of education. “I think it starts with self-awareness and being intentional about keeping tabs on what you need in a given moment and what you do in a given moment,” Berman said. While each of the six women make time for their families, they also set aside a period to mentor others who want to follow in their path.

Building A New Home
The Safe Center hopes to open a second safe house BY CHRISTOPHER BIRSNER
T
cbirsner@antonmediagroup.com
he Safe Center LI, which is based at 15 Grumman Rd. West in Bethpage, announced last week that they are launching a capital campaign to raise $3 million to create a second safe house for domestic violence victims. The organization already owns a safe home that has 17 beds for domestic violence victims, but this is the lowest per-capita rate of beds in New York. Executive director Cynthia Scott said that, since they have the only safe home in Nassau County, they are forced to send victims to other counties. “We send more people out of the county to seek safety than house them here,” Scott said. “We thought it was a problem and the Nassau County Department of Social Services did as well.” The department sent out a request for proposals more than a year ago to see if anyone would be able to facilitate another safe house in the county. The Safe Center threw their hat in the ring and were chosen by the county to run the establishment, but the question remained how the shelter was going to be set-up. “The county is able to make the commitment to support the ongoing operations once the shelter is established, which is wonderful,” Scott said. “But they don’t have the resources to provide us with the funding that would be required in order to purchase
A bed inside the current safe house, which has 17 available to domestic violence victims. The Safe Center hopes to increase the number in Nassau County to 32. (Photo courtesy of The Safe Center LI) and renovate a site. So we are embarking upon a capital campaign that will allow us to do that.” The new safe house will provide 15 beds to domestic violence victims. As funding is being raised for the campaign, the center is actively looking for a site to build, which will not be ultimately disclosed to the
public in order to protect victims who stay there. The Safe Center’s sole safe house gives victims a chance to stay for up to 90 days, with two 90-day extensions if needed. “For some people, the first month or so is just getting settled down, letting the dust settle and allowing themselves some time to heal,” Safe House Director Terray Gregoretti said. “But others come to us with their lives generally intact. It varies from person to person, but while they are there, advocates are there to help them with what they need.” Advocates at the safe house help provide many services to victims, including clothing and food. Children who stay there can get transportation to their school or register with a closer school. With general counseling and other safety services as well, The Safe Center provides a lot in order for victims to get back on their feet. “The goal is to help people become as independent as possible,” Gregoretti said. The center’s yearly fundraisers will be a huge part in raising funds. This includes “Taste That Jazz” on Monday, April 6, at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow (www.tsclitaste.org), the “Swing for Hope Golf Outing” on Monday, June 8, at North Shore Country Club in Glen Head (www.tscligolf.org) and the 2020 “Every Home A Safe Home Gala” on Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Garden City Hotel in Garden City. March Is Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month
BY JOE SCOTCHIE

M
ultiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system. Public figures suffering from the disease include the actresses Selma Blair and Terri Garr, country singer Clay Walker, Anne Romney, wife of the senator from Utah, Montel Williams and Fox News host Neil Cavuto. The disease can be debilitating, but Cavuto’s continued presence on television proves that it can be overcome. Once activated, MS can cause symptoms throughout the body. In MS, the immune system attacks the myelin sheath that protects nerve fibers in the brain, spinal cord and optic nerve. As the myelin sheath is gradually destroyed, the resulting scar tissue disrupts the electrical impulses between the brain and other parts of the body. Health organizations have long estimated the prevalence of MS in the United States to be about 400,000 people. However, the magazine Neurology

adorned with a butterfly symbol. Orange is the official color for MS awareness, and the butterfly represents the shape commonly seen on a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a brain of a person with MS. The highlight of the month is MS Awareness Week, which started on March 8 and ends on March 14. During MS Awareness Week, the National MS Society (NMSS) focuses on the individual stories of those living with the condition. In sharing tales of successes experienced by those with MS, the goal is to “help people better understand life with MS and become inspired to do whatever it takes to change the world for people living with” the condition, according to the NMSS website. In addition, a NMSS Public Policy Conference featured hundreds of MS activists in Washington, D.C., discussing policy priorities for people living with MS. The conference concluded with more than 300 meetings on Capitol Hill, where activists told their stories to support policy priorities like funding for MS research and affordable healthcare. On Long Island, MS activity continues into the spring. On Thursday, April 30, from 6 to 10 p.m., The Inn at New Hyde Park will host a runway fundraiser that hopes to raise more than $175,000 for those affected by the disease. Individual tickets are $225 and a corporate table of 10 is $2,500. The Inn is at 214 Jericho Tpke., New Hyde Park. Call 516-354-7797. On Saturday, May 16, Jones Beach in Wantagh will host the annual Walk MS.

Walk MS has grown to nearly 300,000 participants and volunteers at more than 350 locations since the movement began in 1988. Both one mile and three mile routes are available. The walk is open to all ages. Raise $100 and get a Walk MS T-shirt. The walk begins at Field One on 1 Ocean Pkwy. The site opens at 8 a.m. The walk starts at 10 a.m. Walk MS is held rain or shine. In the event of lightning, the walk will be delayed until conditions improve. Finally, Saturday, May 30 is World MS Awareness Day. Established by the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation in 2009, the day unites the global MS community of more than 2.3 million people “to share stories, raise awareness, and campaign with and for everyone affected” by the condition. The aim of the campaign is to challenge common misconceptions about MS, while helping people understand how to help those with conditions that are not always visible.

artners Health Plan (PHP) is a non-profit health plan created to support people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), including autism spectrum disorder, down syndrome, cerebral palsy and traumatic brain injury. By combining coverage and provider networks for Medicare, Medicaid and IDD services, members are provided with a cohesive, easy-to-navigate and individualized plan of care. Drawing from the support and experience of its long-established and trusted sponsor agencies: NYSARC and ADAPT Community Network (formerly United Cerebral Palsy of New York City), which are both leading providers of programs and services for people with developmental disabilities. “We are dedicated to keeping each of our participants healthy, happy and as independent as possible while they pursue their dreams and valued outcomes in the diverse communities they call home,” said Kerry Delaney, CEO of Partners Health Plan. “Working in close collaboration with families and other members of the community, we will continue the proud NYSARC/ADAPT tradition of supporting the unique needs and wishes of the individuals in their care, fully integrating their supports and services, advocating on their behalf and assisting participants throughout their lives. Our goals are
lofty, but so are the expectations of the people we are committed to supporting.” In order to maintain an exceptional standard of care, Partners Health Plan’s two-person care coordination team supports members in obtaining appropriate person-centered services such as medical, vision and pharmaceutical needs as well as benefits such as durable medical equipment, telehealth, self-direction, home care, community habilitation,

By fostering connections and developing friendships, individuals participating in the program are able to develop friendships through shared interests, thus improving their quality of life. “One of the primary concerns we hear from families is what will happen to their loved one after they are gone,” Delaney said. “Our goal is to put their minds at ease with the comfort of knowing that we will work tirelessly as trusted advocates for our members every day to help them live their best lives.” The following individuals are eligible to join Partners Health Plan: • Are over the age of 21 • Have active Medicaid and Medicare • Are eligible for OPWDD (Office for People with Developmental Disabilities) Waiver services. • Reside in our service area (Currently nine counties: Rockland, Westchester, Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Nassau and Suffolk). Safavieh’s home staging service elevates every space BY CYNDI ZAWESKI
czaweski@antonmediagroup.com
Home staging makes a statement. It is effective because it maximizes a property’s potential while minimizing its drawbacks. It is all about making the best first impression to attract qualified buyers. Signing up for home staging design services can make all the difference in the time it takes to sell your home. According to the National Association of Realtors, 40 percent of buyers’ agents cited that home staging had an effect on most buyers’ view of the home. “Staging makes the home feel warm,” said Michael Yaraghi, owner and president of Safavieh, a home furnishings brand with 12 locations in the tristate area. “The success rate realtors have when a home is staged is unbelievable.” The designers at Safavieh recently partnered with RXR Realty, developer of the Ritz-Carlton property in North Hills, to create three distinctive penthouse designs that would entice potential homeowners. The process starts from the ground up, Yaraghi explained. “The first thing we do is select a color palette and measure the room for furnishings,” he said. “It starts from the floor up, first the rug, then the furniture and then, we accessorize it.” Designer Keith Murphy used the proverbial all-white color scheme to evoke the glamour of Old Hollywood in one of the suites. Along with white upholstery, rugs, drapes and cabinets, the scheme also includes plenty of burnished gold. plus silver, transparent crystal, dark brown floors, dark
gray marble and apple green in the kitchen. In a second suite at the Ritz-Carlton Residences, designer Karin Krinsky used blue as an accent color amid billows of silver, gray and white, creating serene spaces that beckon one to relax. The dining area is a star of this stage, with its long cascading drapes and chairs upholstered in the strongest saturated blue velvet, punctuated by silver nail-head trim. A shimmering bar cart nearby, this is the perfect spot for evening entertaining. The other rooms in this suite suggest Art Deco—for example, the graphic fire screen in the living room and a Machinist style of the end table. Last but not least, Safavieh designers Joe Murphy and Iris Carias collaborated to create a space of understated luxury. Neutral tones and unpatterned upholstery create the muted backdrop. In the living room, neat geometric patterns in floor-toceiling drapes and rugs add subtle visual interest, as do hand-thrown pots and contemporary prints. The
study, outfitted in gleaming nickel and glass, might be the spot to do serious work—or to kick back with a novel, as sunlight filters through sheer drapes and falls on the mellowed silk rug. In the master bedroom, a tailored velvet-covered bed and architectural chests project a pleasing solidity, and warm gold tones seem to guarantee restful slumbers. Expert tips for designing a home office BY CYNDI ZAWESKI
czaweski@antonmediagroup.com
Working from home has its perks. In addition to typing away in the comfort of your pajamas, it lends itself to tackling tasks in a calmer setting than a traditional office environment. Creating a designated space to get into work mode while still at-home is the trick to maximizing efficiency, not to mention maintain work-life balance. Whether you are self-employed or telecommuting, interior designer Jody Sokol, of her eponymous-named Northport firm, shared her expert tips on defining a professional working space that separates your career from your personal life.

Choose a Dedicated Area One common mistake people make when setting up a home office is that they don’t always consider the rooms next to their home office and in many cases, the kids, pets and televisions can be a major distraction. It is essential to keep privacy in mind. “Working from home is challenging on so many fronts so you need a space where your kids, pets and television don’t distract you from your work,” Sokol said. “If you can soundproof your space, even better.” Don’t overlook the layout, either. Sokol suggests asking yourself, “How does the room function for you?” And, “Is there enough room to move around comfortably without bumping into things?”
Adequate Storage and Equipment Another common issue people face when designing a home office space is creating enough storage for their office supplies and files. The dedicated spot needs to comfortably fit the essentials—desk, chair and computer—plus, file cabinets and necessary accessories like a printer. Another consideration is where the equipment will fit in relation to the windows and outlets. Sokol suggests creating a printing station with paper, printer and ink. She also notes the importance of installing plenty of shelves and cubbies for supplies.
Conceal Wires The best way to conceal wires is to hide power strips and plugs if possible. “You probably will need to Consider Light and Color put a hole in your desk so you can No fluorescent bulbs here. Teacup Planters March is a great time to start practicing your green thumb. These adorable small succulent planters are sure to brighten up your space. Supplies: Teacups (you can find these for cheap at thrift stores or a dollar store) Cacti or Succulents Small pebbles or stones Cactus soil (Photos courtesy of Vicki Liston)
Directions: Arrange your cacti or succulent in the teacup as you see fit. Fill the cup about ¾ of the way with the cactus soil. Place the pebbles or stones on top of the soil to completely cover any visible dirt. Water 1 to 2 times a week. —Submitted by Fry-Wagner
Make Anything a Label or Sticker Typical label makers are as boring as you can get. So if you’re looking for a fun way to get organize for spring, try this instead. Supplies: Computer Printer Paper Clear shipping tape Scissors Glass with water Spoon (or other hard implement) Directions: First, create (or find) your label or sticker design and print it out. Black and white or color, it works either way. Next, fully cover the printed design with shipping tape. If the design will fit within the width of the tape, great. If not, carefully line up the edges of the tape so they don’t overlap. Use a spoon or other hard implement to rub over the top of the tape. Pressure is the key here, if you want the toner to transfer from the paper to the tape, push down hard and scratch back and forth along every bit of your design. Use the scissors to cut the design out into the exact shape and size of the label. Place your label-to-be in a mug or glass of water so that it’s fully submerged and let it soak. Leave it alone for hours before it is ready. Using your thumb, carefully roll the paper off the back of the tape. You’ll get most of it off but keep going over any spots with remaining paper. Re-wet the tape if it starts drying. Continue until there are no more paper fibers and only the toner remains. Turn the tape sticky side up and allow the dry. As it dries, the stickiness comes back. Press your label firmly onto your item and work out any air bubbles underneath. —Submitted by Vicki Liston, host on HomeTalk TV and “On TheFly…DIY”

6 Tips For Getting Your Home Ready For Spring DIY diva Barbara Kavovit shares her expert advice BY CYNDI ZAWESKI

ou may recognize Barbara Kavovit from The Real Housewives of New York, but she’s no superficial reality television star. The New York native is the founder and CEO of Evergreen Construction, one of the few female-led construction companies in Manhattan, and the author of two home improvement books, Room for Improvement and Invest in Your Nest. It all began at the age of nine, when Kavovit’s father handed her a hammer and enlisted her help constructing bunk beds. “That experience really set the groundwork,” the Bronx native said. “It was a self-esteem booster and it made me want to empower other women to feel secure and knowledge doing work in their homes.” Kavovit also recently debuted her her first novel, Heels of Steel, giving readers an inside look into the cutthroat business of hardhats and hammers, based on her own experiences working on projects at Rockefeller Center, Carnegie Hall Towers and the Empire State Building. “Between the ‘Me Too’ movement and ‘Times Up,’ I thought writing a novel talking about breaking through the glass ceiling without throwing people under the bus was an important topic,” she said. Following the success of the book, a sequel is already in the works, as well as a new television show. But, Kavovit has not lost sight of her first love. The do it yourself queen, whose been featured on Today and Oprah Magazine, shared her expert tips for refreshing your home for spring. “Spring is a great time to accomplish things around the house,” she said. “It is not too cold or too humid. You can open the windows and let in a new season.” Give Your Deck a Face Lift After a long winter a deck can look pretty dismal. Before summer temps

make it too hot (above 85 degrees). First wash or power wash your deck (you can rent a power-washer) or scrub it by hand. Use a long-handled bristle brush and warm soapy water. A cup of bleach added to two gallons of water removes mildew and moss. Rinse thoroughly using a high-pressure jet hose and let the deck dry completely. Pour deck stain in the shade of your choice into a paint tray and use an extended handle roller to apply. Let stain dry for 24 hours. Replace your AC Filters If you have an individual air conditioner unit, remove it from the window and change its air filter. For less than $20 a new air filter will allow proper air flow from your furnace. If you have an HVAC system, change that filter as well. Replacing the filter every three months keeps hot and cool air clean and breathable. A dirty air filter forces your system to work harder and less efficiently. Fix your Screen Stop the bugs from coming in this spring. Buy screening, screen spline (a thin, narrow piece of wood, metal or plastic that fits into or onto the edges
of the window and holds the screen taut), a screwdriver, 1¼ putty knife, a utility knife, clean paintbrush, small clamps, screening tool that has a convex wheel at one end and a concave wheel at the other. Next, remove the window or door. Using a flat head screwdriver or putty knife to pry out the old spline. Remove the screen and clear the channel with a clean paintbrush. Cut a new piece of screen two inches larger than the opening. Use the screening’s tool’s convex wheel to push the screen into the channel all around the window, keeping the screen smooth and taut. Cut a piece of the spline six inches longer than the perimeter of the opening. Use the concave wheel on the screening tool to push the spline and the screen into the channel all the around the window, maintaining tension. Finally, cut any excess screen from outside the spline with a utility knife. Install a ceiling fan Ceiling fans efficiently and effectively reduce the need for air conditioning. Reverse the fan direction in summer so the airflow creates a wind-chill effect, making you feel cooler and allowing you to turn down (or off) the AC.
finder, 3-inch wood screws Hang Your Bikes: Once you have purchased your bike hooks from your local home center, find a location in your garage to hang your hooks, keeping in mind leaving access for your car(s) and a clean route to the house entrance. Use your stud finder to locate the ceiling joists and predrill a hole into the joist. The hole should be half inch the diameter of the thread on the hook. You can now hand screw the hook into your joist and are ready to hang your bikes. Use your tape measure and find your next joist, which is 16 inches away in either direction and repeat the process for additional hooks. Hang your Hoses/Extension Cords: Find your wall studs and hammer in a nail on a 45 degree angle. Use a bungee cord and hook one end on the nail, pass the other end through your rolled up cord or hose and hook that end on the nail. You have now freed the clutter from your garage floor in a quick, economic way. Install the foam insulation where the top and or bottom of sashes are to block out any outside air infiltration. arch brings with it the hope for spring. Winter is ending and soon the weather will warm up and it will be once again time to spend more time outdoors and hopefully increase our activity levels. At this time of year, many people begin to assess their overall health and well-being. So, I ask, how can we keep our livers healthy? For the vast majority of people, this is easy as most people do not have any underlying liver problems. The key to a healthy liver is a healthy diet. What is a considered a healthy diet? I would argue that a good healthy diet requires common sense. Lots of fruits and vegetables, minimizing fatty foods, drinking plenty of water and watching alcohol intake. This does not mean that anything is off limits. The common-sense approach means that people have to use their brains when

A good healthy heart diet will also help the liver, minus the two glasses of red wine per night recommended by cardiologists. Avoidance of health food store products and herbal products may also help prevent disease exacerbation. Although 99 percent of these products are safe, some may still cause problems. Before someone with liver disease starts one of these products, they should make sure that they have discussed it with their doctor. Keeping the liver healthy is important. As the weather changes for the better, it is great time to concentrate on a healthy diet and exercise program, which will benefit not only the liver but the entire body.

Specialty Infusion centers offer treatment all year round and the center is equipped to treat a wide range of conditions. “Patients need to know they have a choice,” Deutsch said. “They don’t have to go to the hospital to get infusions.” Specialty Infusion has also created an environment that is all about patient comfort, convince and safety. Each center has pods set up for the patients therapy, which are like a first class airline lounge. Each of the rooms are equipped with iPads, snacks, WiFi and warming blankets. Medications are mixed on site so there is no delay in
starting the treatment. Often hospital centers are pressured to prioritize the cancer patients who may run long treatments that bumps other appointments. The team at specialty infusion uses convenient texting for scheduling and the coordination team completes a thorough investigation of benefits before the treatment. Along with the convenience of visiting these centers, is the numerous cost-saving programs and lower prices, which can reduce healthcare costs and hold down premiums. The center works closely with all drug manufacturers co-pay assistance programs so the all out of pocket expenses are covered. Hospitals charge facility fees for infusion treatments that can be in upwards of $10,000 just for being an inpatient. These fees are in addition to the medications, which can also be thousands of dollars. Specialty Infusion does not bill for the facility, therefore patients and their insurance are saving thousands of dollars each visit, which for most patients is every four to six weeks. The team at Specialty Infusion will work to their patients can schedule their treatments when they need and want them. Partnership Provides Free Hotel Rooms For Cancer Patients
ancer patients traveling far from home for treatment across Long Island and in Queens need not worry where to stay during their care due to a new partnership agreement between the American Cancer Society, Courtyard Marriott and Springhill Suites. If you’re a cancer patient and your doctor says, “Your best hope for a cure is in another town,” your first thought may be, “Where am I going to stay and how am I going to pay for it?” The American Cancer Society can help. The society works together with hotels through its Hotel Partners Program to provide complimentary and/or reduced rate rooms to cancer patients who need to travel out of town to receive treatment. “These partnerships illustrate our united front against cancer,” Barbara Messeder, mission delivery manager for the American Cancer Society in Hauppauge, said.“Our hotel partners show a commitment to community and to patients struggling with cancer. This local patient service would not
exist without their generosity to helping people at a very challenging time. Having a place to stay during cancer treatment could be the difference between someone getting treatment or not.” Two area hotels have joined the program: Courtyard by Marriot Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma and Springhill Suites New York/JFK Airport in Jamaica. These hotels are offering free lodging, when available, to patients traveling to their treatments. “It makes smart business sense to support the community and align with organizations that are doing great things,” Susanne Lofaso, general manager of Courtyard Marriott, said. Coping with cancer can be an immense and complicated burden. The reality of cancer is that many patients, especially those with limited resources, must overcome numerous hurdles to access timely, high-quality cancer care. “If we can give back a little and help someone when needed, then it’s a
win-win,” Eric Fung, general manager for Springhill Suites, said. In 2018, the American Cancer Society served cancer patients and their caregivers with more than 43,000 free or reduced nights of lodging through Hope Lodge facilities and hotel partners in New York state alone. “Not only does the society work to get patients to treatment and free or reduced rate lodging, we are working to remove any barriers to getting the best cancer care,” Patti Mack, communications director for the American Cancer Society said. “We quite literally are fighting cancer from every angle.” For patients to be eligible to receive lodging through the Hotel Partners Program, they must be traveling for a cancer-related medical appointment, need lodging near their treatment center, have a permanent residence and be able to care for their personal needs or travel with a companion who can assist them. For information about American Cancer Society programs and services, including lodging, please visit www.

6 Benefits Of Acupuncture For Cancer Patients BY ELIZABETH MARTIN
specialsections@antonmediagroup.com
M
ore than 39 percent of the population will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their life, so chances are, someone you know has had cancer. A 2019 study in JAMA Oncology found that acupuncture was significantly associated with lower pain levels for cancer patients. It seems that recently Eastern medicine, such as acupuncture, is integrating with Western medicine. The ongoing opioid crisis makes it more challenging to address cancer pain management, making acupuncture an alternative for pain. Acupuncture has recently been proven to reduce pain. One of the common side effects of chemotherapy is neuropathy, where nerve damage causes tingling, numbness and other sensations that can be extremely uncomfortable. This pain is often not treated or can’t be treated with pain medication, but acupuncture proves to be a great alternative. Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine help open the body up and heal by promoting the flow of Qi (our vital energy). Acupuncture helps to bring circulation and blood flow to certain areas, helping the body to heal itself. Acupuncture minimizes the common side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, including neuropathy, nausea, loss of appetite and insomnia. As a practitioner, I hear over and over that cancer patients are apprehensive about taking another medication for the side effects of another medication. But acupuncture is a noninvasive way to treat these side effects. I already mentioned that acupuncture helps with neuropathy because it stimulates blood flow to the damaged nerves. With nausea and loss of appetite, acupuncturists can open up channels that lead to the stomach meridian to help the body work more efficiently and improve the flow of energy to that area. When someone has insomnia, it’s a sign that the brain is not shutting off. Acupuncture tells the neurotransmitters in the brain to calm down and helps to reprogram your body’s own circadian rhythm. When we are working on patients with insomnia, most of the time we choose to work on the heart meridians, because the heart calms the mind, and in traditional

Chinese medicine we believe it is connected to the mind and spirit. Acupuncture is an appointment that they can truly enjoy. Often, schedules are packed with doctor’s appointments, but a visit to the acupuncturist is one to look forward to. I wanted my office to feel like home, so I purposely designed my practice to be that way, touching on the five elements of Chinese Medicine: wood, water, fire, earth, and metal and making it a tranquil, medical spa-like atmosphere. Doctors often look at their patients like a number, rushing to get them in and out of the door, but during an acupuncture appointment at our practice, we make a point to spend the time to get to know our patients and help to talk them through the emotions they may be going through during their cancer diagnosis and treatment. Acupuncture can help to improve emotions. The theory is that acupuncture is compared to going for a run—increasing circulation, draining the lymph nodes, and releasing toxins. Whenever you get acupuncture, it releases neurotransmitters in the brain like serotonin and epinephrine, which helps boost energy levels and improve mood. At the practice we also use acupuncture to help treat allergies, as it goes back to my earlier point about

opening the flow of Qi. During cancer treatment is the best time to get acupuncture. With the treatments and appointments that many cancer patients are already going to, they can often be afraid and apprehensive to try acupuncture while in treatment. But in fact, this is the best time to go. We often hear from our cancer patients that they felt overwhelmed with adding another appointment, but after coming to acupuncture they felt more relaxed, had less pain, and felt calmer after undergoing regular acupuncture treatments. Often the patients that were skeptical of acupuncture would take a break and very often when stopping acupuncture regularly, it caused their pain to return. Acupuncture is just one form of alternative therapy, but there are others that could benefit those with cancer. Acupuncture is only one pillar of Chinese Medicine, but other modalities include manual therapy, Chinese herbal medicine, and meditation practices like Qi gong. A recent meta-analysis in patients with cancer and insomnia showed that yoga, meditation, hypnosis, mindfulness-based stress reduction, and qi gong have a moderate effect on the improvement of sleep quality for up to three months. At my practice, we also do sound
5
healing classes, which has been a great way to start meditation and can help reduce stress. This practice uses vibrations (vocal or instrumental-like gongs, Tibetan singing bowls and tuning forks) in order to relax your mind and body.

The Coronavirus And Public Transportation Safety Everyone has known for decades that the subway, bus, commuter rail and ferries are a Petri dish for catching a cold, the flu or other communicable diseases. The rise of a growing homeless population, who ride our subways and live at stations for hours on end have made matters worse. Take a walk around Penn Station and see for yourself. They clearly have little if any ability to maintain personal hygiene. The announcement by MTA Chairman Pat Foye in response to the threat of the corona virus growing is disappointing. His commitment to have transit workers deep clean the entire system using an “enhanced daily cleaning procedure,” or scrub strategy including bleach and hospital grade disinfectant should have been the norm for years. The same is true for sanitizing “commonly touched surfaces” at stations, including turnstyles, exit gates, MetroCard vending machines and benches on a daily basis. It should not be beneath the duty of former subway token clerks, who are now station managers, to perform some of these duties. Cleaning NYC subway cars and buses, along with Long Island Rail

ARIES (March 21-April 19). You’re polite. You hang back to try to understand where the others want to go and what they want to take. You wait your turn. Just be sure to take it when the time comes. Letting too many people go in front of you is neither necessary nor wise. Life flows best when each seizes the opportunities at hand. Lucky color: white. Lucky item: a crystal. Lucky day: Sunday. Lucky number: 10 TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Material things bring little pleasure, oddly enough. Your apathy is indicative of a soul in need of what cannot be provided in a carbon-based form. Seek the spiritual comforts of connection, the warmth of relationships, the reassurance of humor and the soaring joy to be found in art. Lucky color: brown. Lucky item: an arrow. Lucky day: Monday. Lucky number: 2 GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Most conversations contain a point of diminishing returns. What’s said past that moment is less and less interesting and relevant. This week, that point will be missing, so it will be of utmost importance that you listen through the entirety of each conversation with your mind and heart open to the value of things. Lucky color: gold. Lucky item: a coin. Lucky day: Thursday. Lucky number: 15 CANCER (June 22-July 22). You haven’t always been able to express yourself as well as you can now, so it will be a fun surge of power when people understand clearly and immediately who you are and what you’re about. You will continue to fine-tune this life skill until you’ve mastered it. Lucky color: red. Lucky item: a shell. Lucky day: Tuesday. Lucky number: 17 LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Your feelings of isolation are indicative of the era, so you are not alone in being alone. Of course, that fact changes nothing about the feelings you’re having. To offer comfort to others in the spirit of friendship, compassion and connection will not only help you, but also it will combat the most insidious plague of our time. Lucky color: orange. Lucky item: wood. Lucky day: Friday. Lucky number: 26 VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). It’s been said that a little bit of knowledge is dangerous. When you know enough to move forward but not enough to understand what you need to do from that new position, that’s when a guide is worth every penny. The way to avoid this whole situation is, of course, to do as much research as you can upfront. Lucky color: black. Lucky item: a flower. Lucky day: Monday. Lucky number: 13 LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Staying true to one’s word is a lot easier for those whose words are vague, broad-stroked and noncommittal. This is why people are drawn to specificity. Specificity takes effort and courage. The results of specificity are powerful. Specificity makes small things move until big things are also moving. Lucky color: green. Lucky item: an apple. Lucky day: Wednesday. Lucky number: 3 SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Things you want are getting more expensive, but you’re also growing in your capacity to earn money. Lucrative arrangements will be on offer. Brush off an old skill you haven’t applied in a while or learn a new one. You’re about to appreciate how the balance of the universe applies to your world. Lucky color: blue Lucky item: water. Lucky day: Sunday. Lucky number: 20 SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). There’s nothing like the human touch. You’ll interact efficiently with a few robots, though there’s really no substitute for what a human brings, even if it’s a little messy. The mess hits on levels that an automated world cannot and serves needs that are impossible to digitize. Lucky color: salmon Lucky item: a feather. Lucky day: Saturday. Lucky number: 12

en new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Nassau County as of Monday morning, bringing the total in Nassau to 17. Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said there are currently 40 county residents under mandatory quarantine and 72 people under precautionary quarantine. The situation on the ground in Nassau County has changed significantly over the past week. As recently as Wednesday, March 4, there were no confirmed cases of coronavirus on Long Island. As of the time of publication, there are 18, 17 in Nassau County and one in Suffolk County. This past Sunday, a Northwell Health laboratory in Lake Success received federal approval to test for coronavirus, making it the first facility on the island to do so. Nassau County Department of Health Commissioner Lawrence Eisenstein said the county has about 20 tests pending results. The county will examine the contacts of the people being tested, and Curran anticipates the number of cases will increase as the county goes through the process. “I want to reassure the project that many of our departments are all on the front lines of this outbreak,” Curran said. “We’re all working very hard to protect the health and the safety of our residents and to get the information out there.” After several new cases were reported to have come from Uniondale, Hofstra University announced it
would cancel classes for a week to limit the potential exposure students and staff could have to the illness. Curran told county residents to remain calm in response to New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Sunday declaration of a state of emergency throughout New York in response to increased coronavirus infections at a Monday morning press conference in Mineola. The executive said the declaration would give the state and county access to more resources to deal with the problem. The number of confirmed cases in New York State has climbed over 100, and is growing daily as coronavirus testing becomes more readily available. The governor signed an order delegating $40 million in state money to respond to the outbreak, which will be joined with another $35 million allocated by the federal government. Cuomo criticized the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) response to the virus as “absurd and nonsensical,” blaming the administration’s hesitation to allow states to test for coronavirus for allowing the disease to spread. As recently as last month, there was just one laboratory in the entire country that could conduct tests for coronavirus. The CDC is advising seniors and people with respiratory issues, the two most populations most susceptible to coronavirus, to avoid travel, flights and large crowds. For county residents, Curran advised people use hand sanitizer, wash their hands and stay home and call a doctor if they feel sick.
• Wash your hands frequently for at least
20 seconds using soap and water or use an alcohol-based handrub.
• Always cover a sneeze or cough with a
tissue or by using your arm.
• Avoid touching your nose, mouth, and eyes
without washing your hands first.

Traditional Irish Dishes Discover Ireland’s most iconic foods BY CYNDI ZAWESKI
czaweski@antonmediagroup.com
Meat and potatoes are signature ingredients in Irish cuisine. And, rightfully so. The Irish Potato Famine, no doubt, was a defining moment in the country’s culinary development. Even in the poorest conditions, potatoes grew easily and became a dietary staple. With rolling pastures, much of the land was also dedicated to sheep and cows, which also became a cornerstone of the country’s meals. These conditions gave the Irish all they needed to create hearty comfort food that has stood the test of time. As we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, here is a look at the Emerald Isle’s most iconic dishes.
Shepherd’s Pie
A traditional made from scratch Shepherd’s Pie is a family-pleasing go-to. A beloved Irish dish, the recipe is rumored to have been created by resourceful and frugal housewives in the early 1800s who wanted to repurpose leftovers. Though there are many variations, shepherd’s pie is defined by minced meat cooked in gravy with onions and other vegetables, such as peas and carrots. Placed in a pie dish, the rich ingredients are topped with a layer of mashed potatoes prior to being baked. Fun fact: though they are often used interchangeably there is a difference between shepherd’s pie and cottage pie. Shepherd’s Pie contains lamb, and cottage typically applies to one made with beef.
Corned Beef and Cabbage
Though corned beef is technically not considered an Irish national dish, it is perhaps the meal most closely associated with St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the United States. Corned beef, salt-cured brisket of beef, is ingrained in IrishAmerican culture. Its popularity spiked when Irish immigrants who came to America used corned beef and cabbage as a less expensive swap for beef and potatoes. It gets its off-beat name from the coarse salt or “corns” of salt used in the pickling process.

The Irish Breakfast Digging into a proper full Irish breakfast ensures you won’t have to eat for the rest of the day. The hearty meal is a feast that includes bacon, sausage (aka bangers), eggs, black pudding, and hash with baked beans, mushrooms and grilled tomatoes often thrown in for good measure. Oh, and don’t forget the toast with butter and
marmalade. The fried breakfast became popular in Britain and Ireland during the Victorian era, and continues to be a mainstay in the UK with many restaurants offering the meal as an “all day” option. Stateside, the dish is just as popular, especially on St. Patrick’s Day when local eateries serve it up as a special.

A TASTE OF THE OLD COUNTRY Growing up in Ireland, nothing beat a cup of tea and a slice of brown bread, right out of the range with a lump of butter melting on it. And that is what you got at my grandparents’ house in the afternoon after the bread was finished baking. What a treat! In our house my mother would often have a soda bread in the oven or even better, scones. The wonderful smell of the bread baking would permeate the whole house. We would hover around the kitchen waiting for them to come out of the oven. The kettle was on for the tea. The butter, raspberry or black currant jam, and as my dad would say, “the anti-grouch” marmalade were on the table. It was pure bliss. What is it about these fluffy scones and that cup of Irish tea that is so special? Irish tea is way more than just a hot drink to dip your Digestive biscuit in; it is an Irish custom that serves as a symbol of hospitality and friendship. Not only is it a great way to keep warm on a rainy day, but it is comforting and has a way of bringing people together. Seldom will you go into an Irish house and not
be offered a cupa tae as soon as you arrive. And if you’re lucky they will produce some freshly made scones to go with it. But there is something special about that cup of tea in Ireland. Some say it’s the water but to me it’s all about the dairy—the creamy Irish butter and rich-tasting milk and creams produced in a country that is known for dairy farming. Ireland has some of the best dairy produced in the world. The cows are all grass fed in a climate with lots of rain producing lush green fields to graze on. So here’s my recipe for the best Irish scones. It’s a personal one because depending on whom you ask for a recipe, the ingredients will vary. But there’s one thing we Irish will all agree on: nothing in the world is better than a hot, right-out-of-the-oven scone slathered with jam and a dollop of cream or simply with butter. And don’t forget a cupa tae to go with it. Enjoy! Happy St. Patrick’s Day Lá fhéile Pádraig sona dhuit! Submitted by Cathy Bongiorno

Stranger Danger
Richard Armitage shows that not everything is as perfect as it seems in new Netflix series BY ANTHONY MURRAY
amurray@antonmediagroup.com
B
ased on the New York Times best-selling novel by author Harlan Coben, Netflix’s new limited series The Stranger shows exactly what happens when people’s deepest darkest secrets are exposed. The eight-episode British drama follows the aftermath of what happens when a mysterious stranger tells family man Adam Price a secret that has a devastating impact on his marriage and his seemingly perfect life. Right in the center of the drama and action is actor Richard Armitage, who portrays Price in the series. “I got sent the script back in November of 2018 and I was sent the first episode,” Armitage said. “I was asked if I liked it and if I did then I can go meet Harlan the next day. I got through the first episode and then I downloaded The Stranger on Kindle because I thought that I just have to read the book. I couldn’t stop reading it and I met him the next morning, having stayed up all night trying to finish the book. It was just brilliant and it was exactly the thing that I was looking for.” Literature, which was a big influence on Armitage’s life, was the catalyst for how he became involved in the entertainment business. “I’ve always been a big reader and I guess my way into the business was through books more than anything else,” Armitage explained. “I think as a kid, I developed a vivid imagination through reading books and all that kind of stuff. It was a slow burn and I didn’t really get back into drama school until I was about 23 years old.” In the series, Price is a lawyer who lives an aspirational life with his wife and two sons. “What becomes clear is that Adam and Corinne have secrets that they really haven’t shared with each other and when you start to dig beneath the surface not everything is as perfect as it seems,” Armitage said. The series, which has twists and

turns in every episode, also has high intensity action scenes as well as deeply emotional ones. “When you agree to take part in a series like this, there are usually key moments in the story which really fire you up that’s being revealed in the story,” Armitage said. “I had the book in the beginning, but we didn’t have all the episodes. We only got two at a time, but I trusted the fact that all of the key moments with Adam in the book would be in the series. The scripts were better I think than the book because when you’re writing a screenplay it has to be a very immediate and very practical thing; it can’t be too psychological or cerebral.”

With a cast that includes Siobhan Finneran, Jennifer Saunders and Anthony Head, Armitage said that he couldn’t have asked for a better cast to work with. “In fact, it was one of the jobs that I loved so much I was wishing that we’d do a second season,” he said. “I loved my family and I absolutely adored the two lads who played my sons. I loved playing opposite Siobhan and Shaun [Dooley]. They were great colleagues, and Anthony Head, who played my father. We had so much fun together. My only regret is that I didn’t have any scenes with

Jennifer Saunders, I’m such a huge fan of hers. Our characters never meet.” So can fans expect to see a season two next year? “I’d be surprised,” Armitage admitted. “I think Harlan is certain that it’s a closed story. The story has come to an end, but never say never. Harlan is a great writer and I think if he can devise a way to continue the story, I’m sure he’ll be on it.” However, if The Stranger was to get picked up for another season, Armitage has some ideas on where his character might be headed. “I think it would be quite interesting for him to be on the receiving end of a pursuit,” he said. “Season one was very much about Adam pursuing his wife and chasing something. Maybe in a continuation of the story—because of what Adam’s done—Adam is the one being pursued to get to the bottom of what he did at the end of season one. We will have to see.” If Armitage looks familiar, it might be because of his portrayal as the dwarf prince Thorin Oakenshield in Peter Jackson’s film trilogy of The Hobbit. “Some of the best memories working on The Hobbit were actually the location shooting that we did,” Armitage said. “The first thing that actually springs to mind is working at Beorn’s House out in Paradise. They built this beautiful set there. I would say the location and some of the South Islands in New Zealand [are most memorable].” Armitage has a busy year ahead of himself with stage work and films on the horizon. “I’m on stage in London doing a production of Uncle Vanya, which will run until May 22,” he said. “The rest of the year, there’s a couple of films that I’ve been attached to. One of them is Now and Then and the other is The Man from Rome. So there’s a possibility that those two projects will go later in the year. I’m also producing some work myself with some books.
