TheHalloween Shapejump-scares Returns To Form into theaters BY STEVE MOSCO

Michael Myers returns to Haddonfield with a grudge.

SMOSCO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

O

n Halloween night in the sleepy suburban town of Haddonfield, IL, in 1963, 6-year-old Michael Myers stabbed his older sister Judith to death with a kitchen knife. The young Myers was taken to the Smith’s Grove Sanitarium where he was placed under the psychiatric care of Dr. Sam Loomis until he escaped, found a creepy white mask and decided to go home again. What followed was a Halloween night killing spree in 1978, when Myers brutally murdered four people and two dogs in his hometown while stalking all-American girl Laurie Strode, his supposed sister and town babysitter. Strode, with the help of a coat hanger, knitting needle and some wellplaced gunshots from Dr. Loomis, survived that night—but they quickly learned that it takes far more than a few bullets to kill the Boogeyman. And thus surmises the events of the original Halloween, John Carpenter’s classic slasher flick that defined a genre and beget

seven sequels, a 2007 reboot (which had a sequel of its own in 2009) and numerous imitators, including the Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street franchises. Now, Michael Myers—or, “The Shape” as he came to be known— returns to Haddonfield 40 years later with an all-new Halloween timeline, picking up four decades after the events of the 1978 original while pretending the aforementioned sequels and reboots never happened. In the film, which was released Oct. 19, Jamie Lee Curtis returns to the role of Laurie Strode, as she continues to deal with the trauma of that fateful Halloween night all those years ago and readies herself for a showdown with Michael. Though she did return for two of the previous sequels, Curtis said this new iteration was an opportunity to mark a fresh path for her character—who had spent her entire life preparing for the return of the monster in the white mask. “It’s its own movie with a complete history linked to the past,”

HALLOWEEN from page 3A said Curtis. “Yet, it’s in its own story 40 years later. The two movies, side by side, are perfect bookends and complements—telling the same story with new generations in the same simple, clear, iconic way that Halloween was and continues to be.” The new vision comes from the creative team of director David Gordon Green, writer Jeff Fradley, writer/producer Danny McBride and producer Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions, among others. None other than the godfather of horror himself, John Carpenter, returns as executive producer to help breathe new life into the characters he created in 1978 with Debra Hill. The legendary filmmaker said the biggest change with the 2018 version, outside of the creative sphere, is the budget, which far surpasses the original effort when shoestring was the name of the game—and saw Carpenter being as frugal as possible, even down to the iconic score, which Carpenter himself composed in a pinch. “The distributor asked me to make this film for 200,000 bucks, and I said, ‘Sure I can. I just want creative control and my name above the credits,’”

Jamie Lee Curtis is back as Laurie Strode, defending her life against Michael Myers.

said Carpenter, as he reflected on his creation and why audiences continue to be terrified by this embodiment of fear. “Michael Myers, with his mask and his gas-station attendant’s uniform, is a character who is between a human being and the supernatural.”

The lore of Michael Myers has reached mythical proportions—and with the gore-soaked buzz being produced by this latest adaption, you can bet The Shape will return to take a stab at a new collection of victims. “He is the ultimate force of evil. He

is ruthless, and there’s no reasoning or praying to God to save you,” said Carpenter. “He has a single purpose and that’s to kill you. Michael Myers is a relentless force of nature. He’s just coming, and you got to get out of his way.”

Every day we make lots of choices and decisions that can impact our health. Some decisions involve what we eat, where we eat, what we drink, how we get to school or work and how we spend our free time. With overweight and obesity affecting so many of our youth today, parents and caregivers need tools to help establish good habits that can have a lasting impact on their family’s health.

HORROR SEQUELS

The Best Of The Worst: S BY STEVE MOSCO

H

SMOSCO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

ardly shining examples of the best in filmmaking, slasher movies keep coming like the lifeless killing machines they portray. Whereas the 2018 version of Halloween returns the franchise to the spirit of the original, the series itself is pock-marked with silly sequels featuring increasingly ridiculous scenarios. And that seems to be the case with most horror franchises—a great original, followed by awful sequels that were clearly produced for the cash-grab. However, even terrible movies possess some merit, whether originality, performances or pure body count. Diminishing returns might be the way of the horror genre, but there is always the chance for a seasoned filmmaker to deliver the goods. With that in mind, here are the best of the most terrible horror sequels of all time.

Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives By the time the sixth installment of Friday the 13th hit theaters in 1986, the slasher genre had largely gone cold. How many times can a group of drunken, scantily clad, oversexed teens be lured to an abandoned summer camp to be ambushed by undead maniac Jason Voorhees? Turning the franchise on its head and toward a more comedic, self-aware approach, filmmakers filled Jason Lives with winking nods to the genre itself and campy kills. One actor even breaks the fourth wall to berate the audience for its insatiable blood lust. But the movie is also filled with high stakes and genuinely creepy moments, specifically when Jason stalks a cabin full of actual adolescents.

Slasher Flicks

When inventiveness saves the later entries in horror movie franchises

Child’s Play 2

Chucky, the criminally possessed doll that loved his owner Andy a little too much, was burned beyond recognition at the end of the first installment of the franchise. The sequel takes the burned remains and uses it to make new dolls and— wouldn’t you know it—Chucky is reborn to slash again. Child’s Play 2 is twisted, sick, weird and often hilarious, with a climatic scene set in factory where more of the “Good Guy” dolls are being constructed. This sets up Chucky’s death scene where he is mutilated, covered in molten plastic and eventually blown up with an industrial air hose. This time, he is almost certainly dead for good. Or is he?! (Note: he is not.)

Halloween III: Season of the Witch

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors Freddy Krueger’s main advantage is that his victims have no means of defending themselves once inside of his dream world. Dream Warriors turns this plot point on its head by introducing lucid dreaming as a technique for his targets to use to fight back. Set in some sort of halfway house for troubled youths, Dream Warriors is loaded with imaginative kills that perfectly fit the personalities of the victims. (For example, Freddy’s claws transform into syringes to give a recovering addict a fatal overdose. Geez.) Then there’s Freddy’s personality, which was always somewhat sadistically comical. In Dream Warriors he truly becomes the quippy bastard we all grew to love— lots of terror, but also plenty of entertainment.

After Halloween II killed off Michael Myers for what was supposed to be the last time, the filmmakers decided to transform the Halloween franchise into a horror anthology series, with a new premise to come in subsequent films. With no sign whatsoever of Michael Myers, Halloween III: Season of the Witch was to be the first of this creepy experiment. Fans clearly missed that white mask, as the movie failed miserably. However, reexamination of the film reveals an inventive and chilling take where children are brutally killed by sinister Halloween masks that are somehow tainted with a Celtic curse. It’s a transgressive plot choice that must be seen to be believed.

MUSIC

Alice Cooper’s Paranormal Fountain Of Youth BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

A

lice Cooper is 70 years old, and while there are those who may cling to the idea that it’s better to burn out than to fade away, the man born Vincent Damon Furnier has no intention of doing just that. He’s just released his latest album, A Paranormal Evening at the Olympia Paris and is out on the road regaling his fan base with a combination of theatricality and hard rocking music that set the tone for everyone from David Bowie to Guns N’ Roses. The double-CD set features plenty of classics, including “Under My Wheels,” “Billion Dollar Babies,” “I’m Eighteen,” “Only Women Bleed” and “School’s Out,” all delivered by Cooper’s current band that includes guitarist Nita Strauss and drummer

Glen Sobel. It’s quite a different experience from when Cooper released his first live album in the late 1970s. “I’m very critical about how we sound on stage. I’ve had so many different bands and everybody is sort of hand-picked. I’m always really nervous about live albums. This one kills me it’s so good. I listened to the whole thing with my mouth open going ‘Wow.’ I called Bob Ezrin and asked if he mixed it. He said ‘yeah’ and I said I could hear every single thing on the album. And the energy on it is like the show. The energy is so up on the album,” he explained. For Cooper, it’s a major departure from the first go-round he had in putting out an official in-concert release.

The Role Of Anger In Abusive Relationships BY JEREMY SKOW editorial@antonmediagroup.com

M

any people think that anger management is about learning to suppress your anger. The true goal should be to understand the message behind these feelings and to express them in a healthy way without losing control. The person who can do that will feel better, be more likely to have their needs met, be better able to manage conflict in their life and will strengthen their relationships. However, in abusive relationships anger isn’t the real problem. If you are involved with someone who has an anger problem, you likely feel like you’re constantly walking on eggshells around them. Your abuser wants you to feel this way. They could control their temper if they wanted to. They make deliberate choices to use their expressions of anger as a means of controlling you. You likely give them their way more often than

you would like because you are intimidated by how they would likely react. Why do we put up with this? The answer is that we are only as oppressed as Jeremy Skow we allow ourselves to be. We get the relationships we are willing to put up with, not what we deserve. Consider how you enable your partner’s bad behavior. Do you make excuses for him? Do you feel bad when she is upset? It is not your job to try to get your partner to “diffuse” or “control” her anger. Each angry person needs to take care of their anger and find appropriate ways of expressing it. However, if an abuser is getting what they want from you they may not have the motivation to do so. If you allow,

excuse or forgive him repeatedly for his outbursts, why should he be expected to change? While none of us can control another person’s anger, we are able to control how we respond to it:

COLUMN

1. Remove yourself from the situation if your loved one does not calm down. 2. Wait for a time when you are both calm to talk to your loved one about the anger issue. Don’t bring it up when either of you is already angry. 3. Set clear boundaries about what you will and will not tolerate. 4. Consider counseling or therapy for assertiveness if you are having a hard time standing up for yourself. 5. Put your safety first if you feel unsafe or threatened in any way.

behavior we define to happen without doing anything about it, our line will slip lower and lower. Our self-esteem will drop, our partner will lose respect for us and continue to act out. If we have difficulties setting limits and boundaries it might be a good idea for us to consider counseling in order to learn how to be more assertive. Utilize your support network (family, friends) to get ideas about how they expect to be treated by their partners. Do something different than you have done before when you are bombarded by someone else’s anger. Don’t just hope that the situation will change by itself. Why should it? Angry people get to stay in charge and threaten others by their explosiveness. Set your “bottom line” and stick to it.

We are the only ones who can decide what we will allow or will not allow. We have our own conscience and sense of self-respect to live with. If we find ourselves allowing the “bottom line”

Proudly made in Washington State, Spoken Barrel includes two rustic bold reds including a flavorful Cabernet Sauvignon and a complex, rich Meritage Red Blend. Highlighting the exceptional quality of grapes from Washington’s famed Columbia Valley, the resulting collection is both rugged and refined—the signature of Spoken Barrel. Deep ruby in color, the Cabernet Sauvignon is bold and complex with classic aromas of cherry, black currant, dark chocolate and roasted oak. Lush, concentrated flavors of blackberry and cherry lead to a toasty vanilla finish with fine, velvety tannins. Black garnet in color, the Meritage Red Blend is a rich and complex wine that features fresh fruit aromas of blueberry and red plum with notes of leather, black licorice and deep roasted oak. A dense, rich mouthfeel is accented by flavors of bright red fruit, toasty oak, smoke, chocolate and citrus rind. Pair this duo of Spoken Barrel wines with the recipes below for a delicious

Islanders Owner Charles Wang Dies

BY STEVE MOSCO

smosco@antonmediagroup.com

Charles Wang, former majority owner of the New York Islanders, founder of CA Technologies and active philanthropist, died on Sunday at his home in Oyster Bay at the age of 74. “Charles was an incredible and influential figure for Long Island, with both the extraordinary growth of Computer Associates (CA) and his purchase of the Islanders,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, who developed a personal friendship with Wang. “His attempts to keep the Islanders on Long Island will long be remembered. As we move forward with the development of the Nassau Hub, we will remember his commitment to the site and the need to have a vision for opportunity and economic growth.” Wang purchased the Islanders in 2000, at a time of major uncertainty for the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise. The Shanghai-born, Brooklynraised businessman would then pour his personal fortune into the team, saving it from relocation and keeping it on the ice at Nassau Coliseum until 2012 when, frustrated by the lack of political support for the coliseum’s renovation and his Lighthouse Project, he signed a deal to move the Islanders to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The Lighthouse Project, a $3.8 billion plan proposed by Wang in 2004, would have built up the

77-acre coliseum site with a new arena, 60-floor “lighthouse” tower, retail, restaurants and possibly even a minor-league baseball stadium and more than 2,000 housing units. Hempstead officials balked at the size of the plan, frustrating Wang for close to a decade until he signed the deal to move the Islanders in 2012. The team premiered in Brooklyn in 2015, one year after Wang sold the Islanders. Though his vision for the coliseum property was stymied, this past year NYCB Live’s Nassau Coliseum operators RXR Realty and BSE Global announced a $1.5 billion project to develop housing, retail and office space on the site, dubbed “Nassau Hub.”

Meanwhile, the Islanders are targeting a new $1 billion home at Belmont Park. But Wang’s legacy stretches beyond the team, the Lighthouse Project and his many showdowns with the Town of Hempstead. He served as the chairman of digital video company NeuLion from 2008 to 2016 and was the author of TechnoVision: The Executive’s Survival Guide to Understanding and Managing Information Technology, as well as Wok Like a Man, a collection of his favorite recipes. Wang will also be remembered for his many philanthropic ventures, including Smile Train, which provides free surgery to children in developing countries, and Project Hope, an international program working to develop ice hockey in China. Wang is survived by his wife Nancy Li; children, Kimberly, Jasmine and Cameron; his mother, Mary; brothers, Anthony of Lloyd Harbor and Francis, of Napa, CA; and three grandchildren. “Charles Wang, who proudly called Oyster Bay his home, will be remembered for his extraordinary success in business, both as the founder of CA Technologies and as the owner of the New York Islanders,” said Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino. “But, perhaps his most enduring legacy, will be as a visionary and a philanthropist, who left his indelible mark on Long Island and truly made a difference in the lives of others. He will be greatly missed.”

Halloween Party Brings Fun And Funding To Cancer Center The Cancer Center for Kids at NYU Winthrop Hospital was a spooky place as Spirit Halloween, a specialty retailer, hosted a Halloween party for pediatric cancer patients and their families. Costumes, games and crafts were part of the magic to help children transcend above challenging situations for a day of scary fun. The “Spirit of Children” party was among nearly 100 Halloween parties hosted by Spirit Halloween at pediatric hospitals across the country. The Spirit of Children program also raises funds through customer donations at local stores and online, in addition to contributions from vendors and business partners. To date, the program has raised more than $510,000 for the Child Life program at the Cancer Center for Kids at NYU Winthrop Hospital. The program is dedicated to helping children understand and cope with the hospital experience including through therapeutic play, arts and crafts, entertainment and other diversions. “As our young patients face complex challenges, we strive to provide a nurturing environment that promotes healing,” said Mark Weinblatt, MD, Chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at NYU Winthrop and Director of the CCFK. “The Spirit of Children party helped serve that purpose, providing children a wonderful diversion from the rigors of medical treatments.”

Spirit Halloween store volunteers were on hand to stir up a stormy brew of amusing entertainment, which included a ring toss on to a large witch’s hat, pumpkin painting, mask decorating, picking out costumes to don, and much more. During the Halloween season in Spirit Halloween stores, customers ring an iconic purple cowbell each time a donation is made to Spirit of Children as part of its #MoreCowbell initiative. “We see first-hand how our parties create magic that transcends the kids’ difficult situations and provides a sense of normalcy as families navigate through challenging and heart-wrenching medical situations,” added Steven Silverstein, president and CEO of Spirit Halloween. “Every child should be able to experience the joy of Halloween.” The Cancer Center for Kids at NYU Winthrop Hospital offers a range of early detection, diagnostic, intervention and treatment services, both inpatient and outpatient, for children’s cancers and blood disorders. Dramatic improvements have been made in pediatric cancer patient survival, with nearly 80 percent of children cured of their malignancies. Conditions treated at the Center include leukemia and lymphomas; bone, soft tissue and brain tumors; hemophilia; sickle cell disease and more. —Submitted by NYU Winthrop

Why Attend a Medicare Seminar Oct 15- Dec 7 is Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) when Medicare beneficiaries decide whether to remain in their current Medicare Advantage Plan, choose another plan or return to what is commonly referred to as Original Medicare or Medicare Fee for Service. Attending a free Medicare seminar in your community can help you navigate these decisions so you can choose Medicare coverage that’s right for you. Here are a few ways you can benefit from a Medicare seminar. • Original Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage Plans. You will leave with a clear understanding of each, including pros and cons. • Medicare, and or Medicaid eligibility. Plan options are offered for those with varying levels of Medicare and/or Medicaid. You will learn about health plans best suited for you, based on your eligibilities. • Enrollment periods and late penalties. Not having this information can put you at risk for no coverage. You will become an expert in knowing these important dates, and understand when you could enroll in a plan. • Provider Network: You can use this opportunity to find out if your primary care physician or specialists are in the plan’s network. If not, you can ask the plan to invite them to participate. • Health and Wellness Benefits: Many plans offer health and wellness benefits over and above what is provided by Original Medicare, including dental, vision, hearing, alternative medicine, and fitness programs. You will learn about the plan’s covered benefits and how you can access it. • Drugs in Formulary. Find out if the drugs your physician is prescribing are in the plan’s formulary. If not, learn about the process to request consideration that your drugs be included.

Physical Therapy Or Prescription Medication For Pain Management? ith October recognized as National Physical Therapy month, I wanted to share some information on the U.S. opioid epidemic, and how you and your loved ones can avoid being part of this national crisis. In March 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued opioid prescription guidelines, recognizing that prescription opioids are appropriate in certain cases for pain management, but in other instances, recommends that patients choose physical therapy as an alternative to prescribed opioids. For example, the CDC supports exercise as part of a physical therapy treatment plan for pain or function problems, such as low back and hip pain, knee osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. I’ve had many patients arrive on their initial visit, frustrated and in pain, stating they’ve tried “everything” but still haven’t received any relief of their pain. After exploring their medical history, I often find that the attempts to relieve their pain, such as prescription medication, haven’t actually addressed the issue, but just reduced the symptoms without eliminating them. What many people don’t realize, is that physical therapy isn’t just for the rehabilitation of injuries. This specific therapy has long been a safe and effective way to treat and manage

pain. Take, for instance, lower back pain (LBP). Approximately 80 percent of individuals will experience LBP at some point in their life. LBP has been documented as one of the top reasons people take sick days from work. There are multiple treatments available for lower back pain, such as spinal manipulation, manual therapy and physical exercise—all of which can be addressed by a physical therapist. Why not consider that alternative option of care? Physical therapists don’t only address the pain. They work to ensure the patient restores or maintains their mobility, range of motion, strength and function, assisting to improve their overall quality of life. Opioids, on the other hand, do play a role in addressing pain, but come with associated risks. Before accepting prescription pain medication, the best course of action would be to review the side effects of all prescribed medication, the risks vs. rewards and if the condition will be resolved or just provide temporary relief. Take a few minutes to have the conversation with your doctor or a qualified medical professional, to ensure you are making the right choice for your health and well-being. Your body will thank you for it. John W. Nulty PT, DPT, MS, OCS, CSCS, is the clinical director and physical therapist at Professional Physical Therapy in West Islip.

“In my opinion, ADHD is a terrible term. As I see it, ADHD is neither a disorder, nor is there a deficit of attention. I see ADHD as a trait, not a disability. When it is managed properly, it can become a huge asset in one’s life.” Those are the words of world-renowned, Harvard-educated ADHD specialist and psychiatrist Ned Hallowell. The luncheon and fashion show supports critical women’s health programming at the Katz Institute for Women’s Health and was presented by the Partners Council for Women’s Health. The event was cohosted by Rosanna Scotto, co-anchor of Fox 5’s Good Day New York, and Neil Tanna, MD, associate director of plastic surgery at Northwell Health. This year’s funds will also support the development of a new Women’s Imaging

Center at the Center for Advanced Medicine in New Hyde Park. “Our Imaging Center is going to be something so different and special, and our goal is not just to provide the most advanced imaging tests but also to have the best patient experience that anyone offers in our area,” said Nina Vincoff, MD, chief of breast imaging at Northwell Health. “Donor support is critical for us to be able to achieve our mission and it would not be possible for us to do the things we do every day for our community without the people who come out and support our events and support our health system.” To date, the Katz Institute Luncheon and Fashion show has raised more than $10.2 million in support of women’s health. Many children are scared about visiting the doctor. This feeling can be a challenge for parents, because children typically have at least 20 well-visits to the pediatrician by the time they are 10 years old, and most likely even more when including sick visits. The combination of being touched by someone who is not familiar to them, the fear of pain from either the shots or the exam and an unfamiliar environment can cause a fear of doctors. Here are some tips to help your child feel more comfortable at the next appointment:

Prepare Knowing what to expect can help decrease anxiety. Consider reading books such as Richard Scarry’s Nicky Goes to the Doctor, The Berenstain Bears Go to the Doctor, Dora Goes to the Doctor, and What to Expect When You Go to the Doctor by Heidi Murkoff. Role play to help your child understand what will happen, and by using a child’s reasons and language explain how the visit will be beneficial: “the shot will keep you

Fear Of The Doctor Stay close

PARENTING MATTERS Graziella Simonetti healthy so that you can keep playing and having fun.” When you practice in a safe and familiar place, it helps your child feel more comfortable in the unfamiliar location. Get a toy doctor kit and play with the different instruments.

Bring comfort Bringing something from home helps lower stress levels by providing comfort, security and familiarity in an unfamiliar environment. Some doctors will do a practice exam on the dolls or stuffed animals brought from home; that can reduce anxiety. Also consider bringing games or activities that will keep your child distracted while waiting.

To the child, the medical table and the chair the parent sits on can feel 100 miles away from each other. Having the child on your lap or next to you while you hold the hand can help him feel safe. The doctor can feel like a stranger and her touching your child can feel invasive and scary.

Coping strategies Teach your child ways to calm down, like taking deep breaths, focusing on objects in the room, closing the eyes and visualizing being somewhere else. You can also encourage your child to listen to music or a story through headphones. Sometimes, simply talking about what is scary can be helpful. Remind your child that he made it through the last visit and was fine afterwards.

Something pleasant to anticipate Set up a tradition of a special happening after each visit. Whether it is offering lots of praise and attention

9B

or a special trip to the store to get a toy, provide a positive reinforcement at the end of the visit. This is not a reward for not crying or getting upset. It should not be tied to the behavior. It may simply be used as an incentive and as a tool to alleviate anxiety.

Conclusion Being nervous before a doctor’s appointment is typical. However, if you notice that your child is scared and talking about it weeks or months in advance, and that the fear distracts him from his everyday life, it might be worth considering consulting with a specialist. This may be a sign of deeper anxiety that needs attention. Grateful Mom Celebrates 40th Birthday Post Whipple Surgery Emma Barros, who originally hails from Ecuador and now resides in Brentwood, reached a milestone that she feared she’d never live to see—the celebration of her 40th birthday with her loving husband and daughter, and 10 of her closest family members. Joining in the family celebration at Long Island Jewish Medical Center was Gary Deutsch, MD, the innovative surgeon who realized that Barros was the perfect candidate for a complex surgery known as the Whipple procedure to cure pancreatic cancer. The challenge arose from Deutsch’s decision to utilize the da Vinci robot to remove a large tumor instead of going with traditional laparoscopic surgery. Earlier this year, Barros visited her doctor complaining of severe stomach pain that, she learned, was caused by gallstones. Even after having them removed surgically in March, the pain returned with new symptoms—Barros turned a yellow hue from jaundice and suffered terrible itching. “I didn’t want to believe anything was wrong. My husband told me I was

turning yellow and I didn’t want to believe,” said Barros. “I even asked my daughter and she told me it was true.” Barros returned to the emergency department at LIJ and learned that a gallstone was stuck in her bile duct, causing a blockage. Her doctors hoped to remove the gallstone endoscopically and to their surprise, Barros was found to have a large mass in the first part of the intestine. This

unexpected finding was biopsied and revealed that she had pancreatic cancer. At this point, Barros met Deutsch, a surgical oncologist who decided that the robotic Whipple procedure (named after the surgeon who pioneered its use) was a better way to go. “The reasons for using da Vinci were many,” said Deutsch. “By operating robotically, we have better

visualization with a high-definition 3D camera and more freedom of movement and dexterity. Also, such major abdominal surgeries traditionally resulted in longer incisions, more pain and scarring, and more recuperation time for the patient than da Vinci surgery. For Ms. Barros, we only needed to make five small incisions that are less than one centimeter in length. And, she was able to go home in four days.” On Sept. 21, Deutsch performed the complex, 10-hour surgery—also called a pancreaticoduodenectomy— which involved the removal of the right side of the pancreas gland along with some of the surrounding intestine and a portion of the bile duct. She was back at home in less than a week, and was finally able to look forward to her 40th birthday. Surrounded by her loving family and her surgeon, giant balloons and a birthday cake, Barros said simply, “It is such a blessing to be with my family today. This is a very special birthday.” —Submitted by Northwell Health

Federal Grant Supports New Sexual Assault Program T

he Hofstra Northwell School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies has received a three-year, $754,000 federal grant to create a program to increase the number of nurses in New York trained and certified as sexual assault nurse examiners (SANE). The new SANE program, the only university- and health system-based program in New York State, will train nurses in Nassau and Suffolk counties, as well as the boroughs of Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island. Of the 17 emergency departments (EDs) that Northwell Health operates throughout the New York metropolitan area, only four are designated as SANE Centers of Excellence by the Department of Health. Those sites— North Shore University Hospital, Staten Island University Hospital North, Lenox Health Greenwich Village (LHGV) and Peconic Bay Medical Center—have 24-hour coverage by nurses who provide confidential medical care to victims of rape and sexual assault, and coordinate follow-up treatment and emotional support. Amy Smith, a nurse practitioner at Long Island Jewish Forest Hills who started the SANE program at LHGV, has been designated as project coordinator for the new training program. The absence of SANE nurses at hospitals often re-victimizes those who have suffered a sexual assault by having them recount what happened to ED administrative personnel, and then again to a nurse, physician or other clinician. “People will show up to any hospital because they assume that when they see an `H,’ anything that they need can be taken care of at that facility,” explained Smith. “What happens is that the patient doesn’t get the care that they need because the staff doesn’t have all the special training that they need to deal with all the different facets of something that is not only a medical need but also a crime.” The grant from the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration will enhance the existing academic-practice partnership between Hofstra University and Northwell Health, and include a

prior to entering the sensitive world of sexual assault.” The inaugural class of 25 SANE students is expected to begin in early 2019. Between January and June 2017, there were 1,240 sexual assault victims seen in emergency departments in localities served by Northwell Health. “Offering this type of specialized education at Hofstra University to our nurses, will give us the ability to grow the program with the goal of having SANE coverage throughout the Northwell community,” said Smith. —Submitted by Northwell Health Flushing resident Amy Smith, a nurse practitioner at LIJ Forest Hills who created a training program for forensic nurses at Lenox Hill Greenwich Village, has been tapped to be the project coordinator of the new program. collaboration with Hofstra’s Maurice A. Deane School of Law. “Participants in the program, who will be trained as forensic nurses, will be responsible for collecting evidence. They may be called to court to provide testimony, so the law school is going to be part of our curriculum and put the nurses through mock trials so they can be prepared for the pressure of what a defense attorney would put them through,” said Kathleen Gallo, PhD, MBA, RN, dean and professor of the Hofstra Northwell School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies and senior vice president of Northwell Health. Composed of 40 hours of classroom training and 300 hours of hands-on clinical training, the SANE program will also feature standardized patients who are individuals trained to represent real sexual assault victims, helping nurses practice diagnostic and communication skills. “These standardized patients help students learn how to perform a gynecologic exam and collect evidence on them personally,” said Gallo, who will be the primary investigator for the grant program. “Our students will be learning to provide compassionate care with standardized patients

Oralgen NuPearl 32X BY JENNIFER FAUCI jfauci@antonmediagroup.com

A happy and healthy smile is always in season and clean white teeth only enhance that. For an oral makeover at home, consider whitening your teeth with the Oralgen NuPearl 32X whitening kit. As someone who has whitened her teeth in the past using brand whitening strips and a variety of toothpastes (my teeth are fairly white to begin with, just need a boost of brightness now and then), Oralgen was a nice change of pace. Not only does it come with an easy to fill mouth tray, which features a comfort-flex material that won’t cut into your gums, the personal UV light was beyond cool. Plus, the Oralgen kit comes with a whitening pen for on the go application. Especially if you need a touch up before a big event, the pen is compact and can be tucked into a purse or coat pocket. The NuBright LED Technology has an advanced botanical whitening gel and natural peppermint essential oil, which allows for visibly whiter teeth in minutes. It is especially great for those who

have sensitivity issues, as enamel is better protected with gel than it is with adhesive strips. The kit comes with two syringes filled with gel that was sufficient for initial whitening. I kept the gel on for about 20 minutes, three times a week and noticed results after the first few days. A tooth indicator card determines a coloration comparison for those who need a visual aid to see the difference. While I still use gentle whitening toothpaste, I have definitely added Oralgen to my pearly white repertoire. Oralgen NuPearl 32X retails for $39.99 at Bed Bath & Beyond.

Get ready for the New You with a Mommy Makeover By Dr. Shain Cuber, New York Plastic Surgeon

Ah, the joys of motherhood— cuddles, baby giggles, and a whopping amount of unconditional love. Unfortunately, some of the other effects that comes along with our little bundles of joy can include sagging breasts, loose skin in the abdominal area, and extra “curves” in places we don’t want them. Many women, despite all efforts, struggle with breasts that have lost their shape and volume, loose, stretched skin, a protruding tummy or “pooch,” and fat pockets that are resistant to diet and exercise. Getting back to pre-baby body may be near impossible without a little surgical help.

Mommy Makeover targets trouble areas such as the breasts, tummy, hips, and fl anks. For these patients Dr. Shain Cuber performs a procedure often referred to as a Mommy Makeover that targets trouble areas such as the breasts, tummy, hips, and flanks. Dr. Cuber will often combine a breast augmentation (sometimes along with a breast lift) for fuller, perkier looking breasts, a mini-tummy tuck to remove excess skin and flatten and tighten the abdomen utilizing a short, hidden incision, and liposuction to contour the waistline area,

creating hourglass curves. His mini-tummy tuck procedure utilizes a much smaller incision than a traditional tummy tuck so that you can still wear your bikini. Shain Cuber, MD, is a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in breast and body procedures. To learn more about the Mommy Makeover or to schedule your consultation with Dr. Cuber, please call our office at 516-472-7846, breastandbodyplasticsurgery. com.

THIS WEEK’S BIRTHDAYS

You’re a skilled visionary, but also a realist who knows that “someday” never comes. We are only ever in one day and that day is always “today.” This solar return inspires you to take charge of your life with new gumption and tenacity. You’ll make concrete plans and act on them, over and over, until the life you want is built and you can live inside of it. Add positive influences and hard workers to your team. You’ll gravitate toward mentors who can give you the tools you need. COPYRIGHT 2018 CREATORS.COM

ARIES (March 21-April 19). How others see you: open, with twinkling eyes inviting conversation. That’s why they’ll talk to you. And when it’s done, they’ll seek you out and talk to you some more. You’ll learn fascinating bits, and also things you’ll wish you didn’t know. All in all, it’s a colorful, social week. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). This week will bring a strong feeling of being connected to the world around you as well as a profound sense of purpose. The wild outdoors will be a panacea. You’ll be revived by the vitality in sunshine, fresh air and fresh water. You will absorb the life force of nature and be spiritually nourished. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You’ll hone your leadership skills, noting what works and what doesn’t. The last thing you want to be is a nag. Nagging sends a message that the other person is not OK as is. You want the best for loved ones, but you don’t assume that you know what that is. Good communication makes nagging unnecessary. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Being different isn’t bad or good, so there’s no need to judge or label who you are and what you give. Do strive to understand yourself better though. Through understanding, you’ll find self-love and compassion beyond what you’ve learned from those around you. Have no doubt you’ll make a unique imprint on this world. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You wanted to be a person who looked, talked and responded to the world in a certain way, so you made yourself into that person. Now your tastes have changed and you’ll need to adapt for new aspirations. The important thing is to want well -- to select your aspirations carefully with a thought toward the greater good. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You’re a pillar in your community, and that comes with responsibilities. Right now it seems that people are leaning on you to such a degree that you feel like you’re doing all the work. You’re not. Just most of it. But don’t worry, you can balance this out by doing less and letting them kick in with more help. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Most people don’t learn by hearing things once. They need repetition and multiple examples before they will begin to understand what is being communicated. Pour over new information several times to make sure you really get it. And when it’s your turn to teach, come at the subject from many different directions. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). For better or worse, you wear your heart on the outside this week. People can readily see how you’re feeling and most will relate. Your likability factor just keeps going up. It doesn’t hurt that you’re also warm and welcoming, with a tendency to make others feel right at home. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Everyone loves a parade -- except those who would like to cross the street that’s being marched down. It just goes to show that even your best intentions can’t please everyone. So focus on what pleases you, and that is likely to bring smiles to many more. As for the others, let them find their own way. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You will teach, by example, what it takes to fulfill a particular role. Consider giving your student a few learning aids, such as clear written instructions about how to accomplish certain duties. Generally speaking, people with a good reason to contribute, and the means to do so, will show up strong for you. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Wanderlust sets in this week. And as much as you want to keep moving, there will be others around you that want nothing more than to see you settle down. Warn them that though you may pause a few moments to appease them, your soul is wild and restless. Once you catch your breath, you’ll be off again. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). No one can get under your skin like those in your innermost circle. They know where all the buttons are. They may not mean to push them, but your closeness makes it harder to get through an interaction without brushing against at least one or two. This is the gift that lets you know where to lay down boundaries.

Offal Gore

DINING

How I learned to stop worrying and love the bits BY STEVE MOSCO

SMOSCO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

A

s a picky young eater, if I refused to clean my plate of London broil, string beans and potatoes au gratin, my father would impose the threat, “finish it or tomorrow I’m making liver and onions for dinner.” If my parents asked me what I wanted to eat for dinner and I didn’t offer a reasonable suggestion, I would be met with that threat again: “Fine, I’m making liver and onions.” “Liver and onions” became the go-to disciplinary warning in my childhood home. Didn’t clean your room? Liver and onions. Get an F on the math test? Liver and onions. Complain about the liver and onions threats? Yup, liver and onions. Well, mom and dad, the joke’s on

you because I tried liver and onions and, guess what, it’s amazing.

Use Your Brains, Eat Organs

Most people spend their lives doing everything they can to avoid organ meat or any nasty bits of the animals they eat on a regular basis. They happily grill chicken breast, but shy away from chicken feet; they gorge on slabs of steak, but refuse to sample the stomach (tripe); they are perfectly OK with a baby cow becoming veal parmesan, but will turn their head in disgust when presented with that same animal’s thymus glands (sweetbreads). There is nothing scary about the forgotten chunks of the sources of our protein. Butchers and chefs call it offal, which is said to mean “off-fall” or what is left over after the

butchering process is completed. This includes, heart, liver, tongue, kidneys, glands, feet, nose, ears, eyes, brain and basically anything else deemed “gross” by the masses. In reality, these horrific cuts of meat are higher in nutrients and iron than all of those other pedestrian portions. Liver is perhaps the most concentrated source of vitamin A and is one of the best sources of folic acid. Beef heart pumps with amino acids that improve metabolism and kidneys are loaded with B12 and B6. And the selling points of offal go beyond mere health benefits. According to Butcher Magazine, it is a fact that if more people ate offal, the price of meat in general would plummet as this economically sound menu ensures not a single bit of animal protein is put to waste. What’s more, offal is far less expensive than more popular cuts of meat.

A Heart For History

Offal has been consumed for as long as living things have eaten each other. And when humans took over the top of the food chain, you can bet they put every single piece of the animal to good use. In fact, because of innards’ tendency to spoil first, it was often consumed immediately upon dispatching the animal. Fast forward to medieval times when servants would save offal for themselves while the lords and ladies of the manor would devour fancier cuts. The servants would take the leftover organ meats—liver, heart, lungs, etc.—and bake it all into a pie. This is where we get the idiom “to eat humble pie,” although back then it

20181026_XAL_LNW_PG00-12:59October22,2018

was called “umble pie.” In America, different regions have wrestled with offal popularity throughout history. In the mid-Atlantic region, scrapple is a popular fried breakfast sidecar and is often made from a nose-to-tail conglomeration of pork offal. In the American south, chitlins, or pig guts, have been a staple for generations. Meanwhile, fried brain sandwiches are a nasty taste of choice in the Ohio River Valley and, of course, Rocky Mountain Oysters are the main way the rugged American west consumes beef testicles. In the northeast, us New Yorkers need only to seek out our local kosher Jewish deli for a beef tongue sandwich with a side of chopped liver.

Haute Horror

In a somewhat ironic twist, offal has been introduced into expensive, trendy cuisine, with stylish restaurants adding the likes of buttery bone marrow, skewered beef hearts and pig ear salad to their menus. The newfound prevalence of what was once peasant food can likely be attributed to the popularity of shows like Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern and

No Reservations (RIP Anthony Bourdain), which have brought the once reviled offal to the forefront of adventurous eating. But in New York, the cultural diversity center of the foodie universe, this food has always been available at insanely reasonable prices. In East Meadow, Kabayan Grill offers sizzling sisig, a Filipino classic consisting of finely chopped bits of pork head, jowl, ear and shoulder with hot peppers and lemon. Across the Queens border in Glen Oaks, Bundu Khan takes eaters on a wild ride through animal innards, with the Middle Eastern eatery delivering an extreme meat dish called “kat-a-kat” with goat or lamb kidney, brain, heart and testicles.

Tail End

Somewhere along the way, we were all instilled with a fear of offal—scary, mushy meats that are bloody, gore-soaked visions of revulsion. It is up to each of us to take the power away from fear by putting it in our mouths and eating it.

Hellfest promises to be a frightening, gory movie not recommended for young children. The movie is directed by Gregory Plotkin and stars Bex TaylorKlaus, Reign Edwards, Tony Todd and Amy Forsyth. Revelers converge in a horror-themed amusement park for a night of scary fun not knowing what awaits them is a terrifying reality of blood and death. A masked serial killer takes over the park and terrorizes a group of friends while the other customers are duped into believing that it’s all part of the show. You will definitely want to see this with a friend.

Venom (NR)

The action/sci-fi/horror film Venom is directed by Ruben Fleischer. The movie stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott and Woody Harrelson. While it is based on a Marvel Comics character, Venom is an anti-hero. Unwittingly he is bound to an alien symbiote (a fictional race of amorphous extraterrestrial beings from the Comic Books that bond with their hosts) that gives him superpowers. When he becomes “Venom,” he is a scary being that must somehow release his alter ego in order to live. While it is action packed, it is also horrifying.

I Still See You (PG-13) In theaters in limited release, this suspenseful thriller is directed by Scott Speer and is based on the novel Break My Heart 1,000 Times, by Daniel Waters. Bella Thorne, Dermot Mulroney, Richard Harmon and Sara Thompson star in this movie set approximately 10 years after an apocalypse killed millions of people. In its wake, the world is now inhabited by ghosts and dark forces. Roni (Thorne) is on the receiving end of a menacing message from the other world and convinces a secretive classmate to help her fall into the shadowy world to stop a clever killer. It’s a very good thriller to get you in the mood for Halloween.

Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween (NR) While technically not a horror film, Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween does have its scary moments and is

good for the whole family. Directed by Ari Sandler, the movie stars Madison Iseman, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ken Jeong, Shari Headley, Caleel Harris and Jeremy Ray Taylor. original movie. This is the third movie Curtis has appeared in and is the 11th film of the series. Nick Castle, Judy Greer and Virginia Gardner round out the cast. Once again, Michael Myers returns with a vengeance, but this time Laurie,is ready to finally put an end to his existence and stop the murder

Halloween (R) It’s back...Jamie Lee Curtis reprises her role of Laurie Strode (sister of Michael Myers) four decades after the

spree. I for one can’t wait to see this movie, as it promises to be one of the best out of the series. Grab your popcorn, soda—and sneak in some Halloween candy for yourself—and get ready to be scared at the movies.

BOOKS

Frightening Fiction The Turn of the Screw

BY JENNIFER FAUCI JFAUCI@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

W

hile television and film are ripe with spooks and scares, let’s not forget where original trick-or-treat tales came from: literature. Gothic fiction runs the gamut from classic novels and short stories to magazines like Fangoria, the likes of which youngsters have subscribed to for years, eagerly anticipating a shriek or spook with the turn of a page. If getting scared via the written word is your choice of poison, give these classics a read this Halloween season.

Frankenstein Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a hideous, yet intelligent creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. Perhaps the biggest pet peeve of readers is those who believe the monster is Frankenstein (large, square head; discolored skin, neck bolts and all), whereas the doctor holds the moniker. The Gothic novel recounts Frankenstein’s narrative as well as the creature’s, in a story that is both remorseful and suspenseful.

Classified as both gothic fiction and a ghost story, Henry James’ 1898 horror novella The Turn of the Screw focuses on a governess who, while caring for two children at a remote estate, becomes convinced that the grounds are haunted. With the power to create an intimate sense of confusion and suspense within the reader, the story has been adapted in several different media formats.

Dracula The original vampire tale and presumably dark lord of Halloween, Dracula was published in 1897 by Bram Stoker. It introduced Count Dracula and his attempt to move from Transylvania to England so that he may find new blood and spread the undead curse. The novel also tells the tale of the battle between Dracula and a small group of men and a woman led by Professor Abraham Van Helsing. It is a quintessential horror classic to read this Halloween.

The Tell-Tale Heart No one does mystery and macabre better than Edgar Allan Poe. In 1843, the American writer published the short story “The Tell-Tale Heart,” a perennial favorite of many readers. The story is relayed by an unnamed narrator who attempts to

convince the reader of his sanity while simultaneously describing a murder he committed. Can you hear the dead man’s heart beating from under the floorboards?
