You’re On, Mr. Macy
BY JENNIFER FAUCI
JFAUCI@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
It was raining in Los Angeles, which was a welcome change for William H. Macy as he reflected on his most recent accomplishments. His offbeat lead role in Fargo changed Macy’s acting career, and now, the 65-year-old award-winning Hollywood veteran spends time on both the big and small screen, perhaps most notably as the proud, narcissistic, trouble-making father Frank Gallagher, who makes his highly anticipated return to television when season six of Shameless premieres on Jan. 10 at 9 p.m. on Showtime. Acting coupled with directing, being a loving husband to wife Felicity Huffman, and devoted father to his two daughters, Macy is the whole package, proving that he’s more than just a character on TV. “It breaks my heart that he [Frank Gallagher] isn’t the most shameless character on television, that’s my lot in life,” said Macy of his unique character, who won him a SAG Award in 2015. “I love Frank. I feel like I’m one of the best and only friends he’s got, so I’m very protective of him. Frank’s not a loser, he’s a player. He’s downtrodden and nobody understands him.” Macy shared that this upcoming season Frank does some things that, in his mind, were completely altruistic. He cited one scene where Frank acts as a good, selfless parent, which ultimately blows up in his face. When asked if he sympathized with Frank, Macy said it’s his job to overlook the bad and accentuate the good qualities about Frank. “He’s a very detailed man who doesn’t get the whole concept of morality; he doesn’t realize how manipulative of reality he is,” said
Macy. “He’s hopeful, hard-working, industrial, entrepreneurial and very political.” As a father, it would seem challenging to play a man whose children mean so little to him. But that surface description of Frank is only the takeaway of a first impression. He will never be father of the year, but loyal fans know that Frank Gallagher is a deeply loving father. “Frank’s children mean a great deal to him and that relationship has evolved over the season,” said Macy, adding that in season six, viewers will see Frank is crazy for his family, the Gallagher name and his heritage. “He’s proud to be a Gallagher. He feels that kids need disappointment and heartbreak…neglect is a form of love because it toughens them up.” Shameless portrays the lives of a family living on the South Side of Chicago. Although the show is an exaggerated comedy, Macy credits it’s success because it gets it right when it comes to talking about the lowest rung on the socio-economic ladder. “One of the things that is so evident is try as that family might,
they are one serious disaster away from being on the street and that’s true for a lot of people,” he said. “The numbers are staggering for the people who are one step away from homelessness.” In 1996, Macy starred in Fargo, a movie that would ultimately change his acting career forever. “I was in my cabin in Vermont and I got the phone call that I had the job. I was by myself, running around screaming my lungs out,” said Macy, who immediately fell in love with the script. “When I got the role, I knew something big had just happened.” Directed by the Coen brothers, Fargo is a crime drama set in Minnesota in 1987. Macy played Jerry Lundegaard, a car salesman deep in debt and so desperate for money that he hires two thugs (Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare), to kidnap his own wife. In 2014, FX aired Fargo as a TV series, of which Macy has seen several episodes. “I thought it was just fantastic. It has quite the style and Billy Bob [Thornton] was having the time of his life in that first season,” he said. Macy’s latest movie, Room, has garnered some Golden Globe attention

and although he only filmed a few scenes in the movie, Macy said he had his “socks blown off.” “I was thrilled when a script came across my desk. It was only three or four scenes and I thought, ‘wow, what a powerful story,’” he said. “Brie Larson is stunning. I’m pleased I had the sense to say yes.” To a certain extent, Macy has made his career playing timid men in over their heads. “I’ve played the sort of every man who is clueless to the big bad world,” he said. “After Fargo, I was worried that that’s all I would get to play and I haven’t found that to be true.” For more on Macy’s roles, see page 6A.
Frank Gallagher is in a class of his own.

DINING - ROCKVILLE CENTRE: PART 1
STEVE MOSCO
Impressive Eats
In this three-part food series, Steve Mosco takes a trip through one of Long Island’s emerging eatery hot spots: Rockville Centre. With rows of storefront-lined streets clustered together with hundreds of metered parking spots, Rockville Centre was destined to be a walkable haven for bar crawlers. But beyond beers and late-night snacks, the village has grown into an urbanized source of top-shelf eateries run by inspired gourmet minds. The sheer creativity behind Rockville Centre’s Press 195 makes it the perfect place to start an eating tour. Located at 22 North Park Ave., it serves lunch, dinner and bar food in a comfortable and friendly environment—an atmosphere as painstakingly constructed as one of the restaurant’s signature sandwiches. The restaurant offers hot and cold pressed sandwiches featuring savory meats, fresh vegetables and the finest cheeses. There are many standouts, but on this particular night, the brisket-loaded No. 46 and the veggie-infused No. 15 were the clear favorites. The No. 46 features shredded, slow-braised sweet brisket and caramelized onion sauce topped
with crunchy, purple jalapeño coleslaw. The first bite reveals the time the chef puts into the brisket, as the sandwich’s depth of flavor is immediately apparent with smokiness giving way to sweetness then to the bright spiciness of jalapeño coleslaw. The vegetarian No. 15 is no less impressive, with grilled portabella, fresh baby arugula and goat cheese with roasted garlic and black olive spread. The intense creaminess of the goat cheese is countered with the peppery bite of the arugula, with the garlicky olive spread providing plenty of aroma and the portabella bringing flavorful heft to the sandwich. Both sandwiches are elevated to unmatched, crisp heights with pressed, handcrafted Ciabatta bread. Press 195 also offers a sandwich creation eaters would be hard-pressed to find anywhere else; a knish sandwich. This gift to enterprising eaters has a crunchy outer shell that yields to a molten potato filling and inner contents including meatloaf, pastrami, veggies and more. Beyond sandwiches, Press 195 boasts salads, burgers and great appetizers including grilled asparagus with tomato and fresh mozzarella in the eatery’s
The pressed brisket sandwich is a new addition to the menu. Left: Press 195’s asparagus appetizer is a great way to get one’s greens. proprietary pure maple syrup basil pesto. Rounding out the meal at Press 195 is the Belgium-style fries with an array of available dipping sauces. Press 195 also has one of the finest craft beer selections in the village. It features seasonal brews and some usual favorites, as well as incredibly tasty choices that are hard to find anywhere else during a typical lunch hour, happy hour or supper time. Perfect at the beginning of a night out or as the centerpiece to the evening, Press 195’s mastery of the sandwich is undeniable. smosco@antonmediagroup.com

Meet Maximo, a 15-foot, 3-inch, 1,250-pound saltwater crocodile who happens to be the largest animal at The St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park. This “Saltie” as his species is called in Australia, was hatched from an egg collected by aborigines along an Australian river bank. He grew to his adult size at the Cairn’s Crocodile Farm. Maximo is the successor to the late Gomek, a New Guinea saltie who grew to be 18-feet long and weighs nearly a ton. Gomek lived out most of his life at the park and is currently preserved in a separate room surrounded by a collection of rare and beautiful hand-carved Papua New Guinea art. Viewed through an underwater viewing window, Maximo is seen here chilling with his lady friend Sydney, who was also brought over with him from Down Under at the same time. (To read more about St. Augustine, see this issue’s Travel Section).

Tye
THE SPORTS DESK
Makes Most Of Giant Chance

BY RICH FORESTANO
RFORESTANO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
The road from undrafted free agent to starting NFL tight end for the New York Giants wasn’t paved with camera flashes and TV interviews for Stony Brook University product Will Tye. A former Seawolf, Tye’s grind in transferring to Stony Brook from Florida State and watching Draft Day come and go in April without hearing his name called could have derailed his journey. But Tye endured and told himself to keep pushing. The hard work paid off during an NFL rookie campaign that saw him lead all first-year
tight ends in receptions and receiving yards. “I felt ready,” Tye said of his first game action against the Buffalo Bills on Oct. 4. “I wasn’t too nervous on the outside but on the inside I probably didn’t realize how big a step I was taking.” Tye, 24, was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster after starter Larry Donnell was sidelined with a neck injury. Like Donnell, Tye rose from obscurity to the top spot. He credited Donnell, fellow tight end Jerome Cunningham and tight ends coach Kevin M. Gilbride with his progression as a starter. “[Larry] taught me a lot,” Tye said. “Even off the field, I had a good trust and bond with him. To connect with him about different parts about the position, different releases and blocking, it’s helpful.” From toeing the lines at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium at Stony Brook, to navigating the whistling winds at MetLife Stadium, Tye keeps the foils of his past in his mind to humble him. He caught just one pass for the FSU Seminoles. “Being undrafted, barely any playing time at Florida State, really pushed me,” Tye said. “The long road it took to get there...that’ll always be my motivation.” Tye’s dream stepped further into reality in Week 14 against the Miami Dolphins. Down 17-10 with less than one minute to go in the second quarter, it was first-and-goal at Miami’s fiveyard-line. As the Middletown, CT., native walked to the line of scrimmage, he wasn’t thinking about becoming the first
Stony Brook player to catch an NFL touchdown. He was concentrating on just getting open. Tye was the second read in quarterback Eli Manning’s progression, but a window opened up in the corner of the endzone when defenders converged on wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. at the front of the goal line. “When I realized how open I was [in the endzone], I thought ‘wow this is going to happen,’” Tye said. “[The ball] hit me right in the hands.” Tye’s crowning achievement could be felt from South Beach to Roth Pond at Stony Brook. “Just knowing how much it takes to get to this point, it was great for me and great for the university,” Tye said. Tye’s soft hands made him a popular target for Manning over the latter course of the season. Though he admits he needs to develop as a blocker, and points to the Giants defensive ends as the toughest to handle in practice. “He’s progressed,” head coach Tom Coughlin said. “There’s some things that I’d like him to do better. I really do believe he can be an outstanding blocker.” What happens in the off-season remains to be seen, with changes expected to turn over New York’s roster and possibly, the coaching staff. Once an unheralded prospect, but now a rising professional, Tye’s made it clear he will work hard to stick around. “Nothing is handed to you, whether you’re a first rounder or undrafted,” Tye said. “You have to work for it.”
