Mike Tyson’s Punch Out!!
BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO
DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
In his day as a feared heavyweight champion, Mike Tyson became a worldwide phenomenon thanks to his ferocity and dominance in the squared circle. Since hanging the gloves up in 2005, the pugilist who once went by the moniker Kid Dynamite has kept himself in the spotlight via a variety of projects on the silver screen, stage (and he once owned a tiger, which was a plot point in The Hangover) and even his own 2014 cartoon called Mike Tyson Mysteries. Below he shares his take on some of those notable non-boxing projects he’s been involved with since becoming famous. The Hangover (2009) and The Hangover: Part II (2011) “My agent got me involved. I was at a club one night and the guys were at the VIP area and no one was able to go there except for me. They didn’t
know it was me and because I live in Vegas, that’s normally my spot. I was like the Godfather and then they realized who I was and said they were going to be in a movie with me the next week. So we stayed and hung out at the bar.” Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth (2013) “I saw Chazz Palmentieri with my wife do his one-man show A Bronx Tale onstage and it was so mesmerizing and I told her that I wanted to make people feel like I feel watching that. [Chazz] was so involved and got us so mesmerized that he could have come and picked our pockets and he would have never known. It’s so beautiful and he’s such an amazing entertainer. [The Undisputed Truth] became my life. I wanted to do other shows that I read for the stage but because of how well The Undisputed Truth did, it was
hard to do a second show. Everybody wants that show. They don’t want any new show. It’s good but it’s bad because that’s all they want.” Ip Man 3 (2016) “[Ip Man 3] is part of a martial arts trilogy starring Donnie Yen. It’s a hot ticket right now. I play Frank, this very astute and sophisticated businessman who is very crooked and shady. I’m trying to get property from these people and getting them to sell out and Donny is fighting for them.” Mike Tyson’s Punch Out!! (1987) “[Nintendo] got me involved. They paid me to use my likeness, it’s one of the highest-selling games and I got a flat fee. I want to start a new Mike Tyson game.” For more on Mike Tyson, see pages 8A and 10A.

Burgers, beers and more permeate Parlay’s menu. Inset: Parlay’s Maple Bourbon BBQ wings
A Village Pub
arlay staked its claim as Rockville Centre’s premier gastropub when it swung open its doors in 2014. Situated in a small strip of storefronts on Merrick Road near the village’s west side, Parlay Gastropub is the brainchild of owner Matt McBride, who wanted to establish a place for beer enthusiasts to sample choice hops while savoring dynamic pub grub. Parlay’s menus piles on bar classics with a twist, while also reaching into less-experienced fare. On the appetizer list, the Baked Mac and Cheese, bolstered with gruyere, gouda, manchego and cheddar cheeses, along with chorizo and poblano pepper for good measure, shares space with Peking Duck Steamed Buns, complete with
duck confit and hoisin sauce. The ubiquitous selection of chicken wings is also available, with Parlay going well beyond the standard buffalo. The pub offers Maple Bourbon BBQ, Asian sesame, white wine teriyaki, sweet chili and more. The Maple Bourbon BBQ wings, prepared with house-made barbecue sauce, perfectly bridges the gap between sweet and heat with its sticky glaze and exquisitely fried exterior. Parlay boasts three kinds of mussel bowls, while the smell of freshly baked bread permeates the air at Parlay thanks to four selections of flatbreads including Margherita, BBQ duck, grilled shrimp and the southwest, a blend of blackened chicken, black bean salsa and more.
The dinner menu blends burgers and sandwiches with fork-andknife jobs like Chicken & Waffles, Fish & Chips, a braised pork shank and grilled skirt steak. The burgers feature a proprietary blend of beef ground daily, using only hormoneand antibiotic-free USDA beef. A good burger is pub 101, and the Parlay Burger passes the test with roasted green chiles, avocado, aged cheddar, bacon and cilantro aioli on a brioche bun. Vegetarians can get in on the fun as well, as Parlay’s veggie burger is no garden-variety frozen patty. It features a house-made patty reminiscent of falafel, with greens, tomato, cheddar and avocado
spread on an English muffin. Other popular between the bread options include the buttermilk fried chicken roll, prime rib French dip and a grown-up grilled cheese. Burgers and sandwiches are served with toasted tots or French fries, but plenty of sides are available as well. For a shot of necessary nutrients, try the crispy Brussels sprouts or the garlicky asparagus spears. More than just a spot for dinner, Parlay was voted in the top 100 brunches in America by Open Table—so be sure to stop in Saturdays and Sunday for a decadent blend of sweet and savory brunch options. smosco@antonmediagroup.com

THEATER REVIEW
JENNIFER FAUCI
A GLOWING, BRILLIANT TRUTH
(Photos by Joan Marcus)
Curious Incident touches the very depth of the soul
The winner of five Tony Awards, including the 2015 Tony Award winner for Best Play, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time has been enchanting audiences for the past two years. Its home at the Barrymore Theatre sets the stage for an incredible portrayal of Simon Stephens’ adaptation of Mark Haddon’s novel of the same name. With believable British accents, talented actors playing multiple interactive roles and several comedic asides, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is a show not to be missed. For actor Tyler Lea, who plays 15-year-old Christopher Boone, his Broadway debut has been a dream come true. “I’ve viewed Broadway from the outside for so long, never absolutely sure I’d ever be here, but I am, and it’s been an exciting and challenging past six months,” he said. The play opens to loud, quick flashes of noise and light, as Christopher discovers the body of Wellington, his neighbor, Mrs. Shears’ dog. When Christopher becomes the main suspect, he decides to investigate the death on his own, which evolves into a deeper journey of what
really happened to his mother, who he is told died two years earlier. The young actor’s absolutely brilliant portrayal of the protagonist/narrator of the novel Christopher—a very smart loner who doesn’t like metaphors but is very detailed in his anecdotes—was apparent straight away. “I knew it was the part of a lifetime,” said Lea of his character, who although is never specified as autistic, has traits that Lea researched extensively. “Mark Haddon...never specified Christopher’s condition, but I did a lot of research and drew from my own experiences to create someone I could believe in and have others believe in too,” said Lea, who is protective

of Christopher and passionately epitomized his condition with strenuous movements and facial expressions that seemed to come natural to him. The unique stage is an interactive grid with a minimalist but active set, featuring blocks, trap doors and hidden compartments; appropriate for Christopher, who is very gifted at mathematics (he recites prime numbers as a calming mechanism). Christopher prepares for his A-level math exam throughout the play, while detailing his adventures in a book. In the end, Christopher remains hopeful about his future, knowing that he will make his mark on the world. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the NightTime will touch your whole being and is hands down, one of the best Broadway shows you will ever see. For more on the cast, see page 29A.

From the moment you walk through the doors of Collector Car Showcase (CCS) in Oyster Bay, you will be transported into a nostalgic automotive and petroliana wonder world. The awe-inspiring vintage petroliana, memorabilia and automobile showroom at 85 Pine Hollow Rd. used to be a wood manufacturing warehouse. “This country was built on the railroad and oil industries,” said CCS founder and owner David Jacobson. “It fascinates me; the way we used to build things in the 20s, 30s, 40s and the progression of it all.” Presently on display at CCS are dozens of cars for the Porsche 1960-2016 Exhibit, but this doesn’t include the vintage pedal cars, bicycles, signs, soda machines, traffic aids and more. Car enthusiast Jacobson got involved in the business through his love of automotive history, specifically petroliana. “Now things are all-purpose built,” said Jacobson. “There’s no character to anything.” His collection demonstrates the intricacies of the bygone-era, like the lighted glass and steel gasoline pumps like the 1920 Mae West gas pump visible and the and the incredible artwork of

company signs and advertisements like the recognizable 1938 CocaCola sign or the Pegasus petroleum sign, one of the most famous in petroliana history. CCS was a labor of love, taking two years to build, bringing nearly a lifetime of collected treasures together. Starting Monday, Feb. 1, CCS will begin airing four half-hour episodes on its website of CCS being built from scratch, highlighting the recent exhibits: The Muscle Cars, The Hot Rods, and A Century of Speed. Also in the works, CCS is spinning off its racing company on March 1, G Programm, retrofitting 1974-1988 Porsches with $30,000 racing motors and suspension. Only three will be built, with orders being taken for more. “Once you drive this car you will have a different perspective of the automotive experience,” said Jacobson. “This car drives and sounds like a vintage car, but with modern technology.” No closing date has been set for the Porsche 1960-2016 exhibit. Visit www.collectorcs.com or call 516-802-5297 for details, hours, additional services and events. General admission is $7 per person, Thursday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Merchandise sales are available from Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more about the Collector Car Showcase, see page 13A.

Least Graceful Coaching Exits: NFL Edition BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO AND RICH FORESTANO EDITORIAL@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
With Tom Coughlin being the latest head coach of a New York NFL franchise to be shown Lou the door (following Rex Ryan’s ceremonious Holtz (1976) kicking to the curb by fellow Met Life Stadium Was there ever a tenants the Jets), we thought coach less-suited to we’d take a look at some other lead an NFL team? A 33less-than glorious departures 12-3 record through four seasons leadby ex-Jets and Giants capos. ing North Carolina State University and Pete Carroll (1994) Long before he won a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks, his first stint in the NFL had a less-than stellar beginning. Carroll was Jets’ defensive coordinator for four seasons before succeeding Bruce Coslet as HC. His energy and enthusiasm sparked the team to a 6-5 start but after falling for Dan Marino’s fake spike that became a Miami Dolphins game-winning touchdown in week 12, Gang Green closed out the season losing its last four games and Carroll was fired.
four bowl games where he went 2-1-1 landed Lou Holtz in the Big Apple. Unfortunately, his lone stint in the pros was an unmitigated disaster that found him taking a team coming off a 3-11 season and actually falling to 3-10 (he quit with one game left in the season). Holtz’s ideas of leadership included his lining up his players by size during the national anthem and writing a team fight song that none of his players wanted to sing.
John McVay (1976-1978) The Ohio native lasted just two seasons with the Giants and the most notable moment came at the expense of Big Blue with the “Miracle at the Meadowlands.” Up 17-13, the Giants had control of the ball and all but a guaranteed victory against the Philadelphia Eagles, who had no timeouts left. Giants QB Joe Pisarcik botched a handoff to fullback Larry Csonka that was scooped up by Herman Edwards before he ran the fumble in for a touchdown as time expired, sealing a 19-17 victory. Offensive coordinator Bob Gibson called for the run, but McVay insisted that his headphones malfunctioned and had he heard the call, McVay would have overruled Gibson.
Bill Belichick (one day in 1999) After his disastrous coaching turn with the Cleveland Browns, Belichick was initially tapped to coach the Jets in 1997 right when Bill Parcells stepped down from the New England job following their loss to the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXI. Belichick was demoted to New York assistant coach after the Pats agreed to allow Parcells to coach Gang Green in exchange for draft picks. Fast forward three seasons and Parcells is stepping down with arrangements in place for Belichick to succeed him in New York. Not so fast. Belichick wound up resigning one day after his promotion and scratching out a resignation on a napkin that read “I resign as HC of the NYJ.” The press conference that followed was all over the place although Belichick did admit, “I had no clear direction of where I am going in the direction.” Given how the Jets treated Belichick, the success he’s had in New England is prophetic.
NFL
Ray Handley (19911992) Another two-year tenure in East Rutherford, Handley was picked by GM George Young to succeed Bill Parcells after he retired following the Giants’ Super Bowl XXV win. Young’s first choice was Bill Belichick who bolted for the Cleveland Browns. Handley, remembered for the funky sweater he wore on Monday Night Football against the San Francisco 49ers, brought 8-8 and 6-10 records to the Giants in 1991 and 1992 before getting canned.
Jim Fassel (19972003) Arguably a successful coach prior to Tom Coughlin’s arrival in 2004, Fassel was known as a players coach, took a chance on the troubled quarterback Kerry Collins and guided the Giants to Super Bowl XXXV in 2000. They were routed by the Baltimore Ravens 34-7. The disappointments bowled over Fassel until his ousting. With losses to inferior teams, plus a 2002 39-38 playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers that saw New York up 38-14 at halftime, the calamity that was the 2003 season ended in a 4-12 campaign and Fassel’s dismissal. He hasn’t held a head coaching position in the NFL since.
