The Art Of Boxing

W

ho could “float like a butterfly and sting like a bee?” Muhammad Ali was The Greatest—he even said so himself. Born Cassius Clay in Louisville, KY, the three-time heavyweight champion was an outspoken and often controversial public figure. In the early 1960s, Ali found friendship with renowned artist LeRoy Neiman, with whom he shared an affinity for boxing, the limelight and breaking with convention. Neiman even taught and encouraged Ali to draw. Using works on loan from the LeRoy Neiman Foundation, the New-York Historical Society’s current exhibit Muhammad Ali, LeRoy Neiman, and the Art of Boxing celebrates Ali, one of America’s greatest and most popular athletes. On display through March 26, Neiman’s vivid watercolors and intimate on-the-spot sketches capture Ali both in and outside the ring. Highlights include portraits, sketches of Ali’s critical matches such as the “Fight of the Century” and the “Thrilla in Manila,” and some works created by Ali himself. Also on display at the New-York Historical Society through March 26 is I Am King of the World: Photographs of Muhammad Ali by George Kalinsky. For more than 50 years, Kalinsky has captured iconic moments in sports as Madison Square Garden’s in-house photographer—a job he

landed, in part, after bluffing his way into Ali’s workout session in December 1965. Their encounter launched a decades-long friendship that lasted until Ali’s death in 2016. Through 45 intimate works, this inspiring photo exhibition reveals flashes of The Champ’s life out of the ring while sharing moments with fans and the press, as well as in the ring during the explosive matches that helped make him The Greatest. “Muhammad Ali was an American legend, a celebrity whose remarkable work ethic, athletic prowess and courage to stand up for his beliefs awe and inspire,” said Louise Mirrer, president and CEO of the New-York Historical Society. “We are proud to present these two exhibitions, which offer a deeper understanding of The Champ through the eyes of two artists who knew him well and experienced his greatness firsthand.” Kalinsky saw Ali through the lens of his camera, capturing The Champ in crisp reality, while another 20th-century artist and friend of Ali’s, LeRoy Neiman, saw him through a different medium, portraying many of the same moments Kalinsky captured through the stroke of his pencil and paint brush. See Ali through the eyes of two artistic greats. The New-York Historical Society, located at 170 Central Park West at 77th Street in Manhattan, is open Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; on Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed on Monday). Visit www.nyhistory.org or call 212873-3400 for details.

The Art of Boxing exhibit features watercolor portraits and sketches by LeRoy Neiman, in tandem with the photography exhibit, I Am King of the World, by sports photog George Kalinsky at the historical society through March 26.

The Last Waltz: 40 Years Later

W

ith The Last Waltz, The Band’s cinematic masterpiece, having celebrated its 40th anniversary last year, superstar producer Don Was (second from left above) has hit the road with an all-star outfit rounded out by Gov’t Mule/Allman Brothers singer-songwriter Warren Haynes, Michael McDonald and honky-tonk troubadour Jamey Johnson to commemorate this seminal event/recording. For Was, who grew up in Detroit and was a huge fan of Bob Dylan and The Band in high school, bought Music From Big Pink the day it came out and saw the quintet in concert in Ann Arbor, MI, the group’s material is very special. “[The Band’s songs are] incredibly well-written. They roll off your fingers and inspire you to play cool stuff, and you don’t have to work at it.” The following are Was’ favorite Band songs.

LONG ISLAND WEEKLY

“I Shall Be Released” Music From Big Pink (1968) “I think it’s Richard [Manuel’s] most haunting vocal. Anything he sang was like that. He just laid it all out there.” “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” The Band (1969) “It’s really weird how that song resonates. There’s something written into those harmonies.” “The Moon Struck One” Cahoots (1971) “It puts me right back into college and I had a really great girfriend and we were parked by the lake and heard it on the radio.” The Last Waltz 40 Tour will be coming to NYCB Theatre at Westbury, 960 Brush Hollow Rd., Westbury on Feb. 3. THE SPORTS DESK

Coaching Exits: Islanders Edition BY STEVE MOSCO

T

SmoSco@antonmediagroup.com

he ax fell upon New York Islanders Head Coach Jack Capuano last week, satisfying scornful fans tired of slogging through another disappointing season—one that seemingly flushed all of the hope from the team’s measure of playoff success last year. While assistant coach and NHL stalwart Doug Weight takes over the coaching duties on an interim basis, the search begins again for a capable candidate to take over the hottest seat on the island. Before that search begins, Long Island Weekly looks back on some of the Islanders’ most unceremonious exits. Ted Nolan (2006-08) The proverbial NHL outsider returned to coaching with the Islanders after nine full seasons of being exiled from the league. A fan favorite who fought to a 75-68-21 and 2007 playoff appearance after a memorable late-season run, Nolan has the auspicious honor of being hired the same day the Islanders named Neil Smith as the new general manager. Smith only lasted 40 days before former backup goalie Garth Snow was given the reins and franchise goaltender Rick DiPietro was signed to an absurd 15-year contract. Snow eventually axed Nolan, citing philosophical differences.

D E M OREMOVAL L I T• ICLEANUP ON

Mike Milbury (1995-97; 1998-99) The name Mike Milbury often sends fragile Islanders fans into nervous fits, as memory after memory of lousy trades and asinine draft choices all come rushing back. In the eyes of many fans, former general manager Milbury set the team back decades with his decisions—but in all honesty, as ill-equipped as he was to built a winning team, Milbury was hamstrung by ownership turmoil and financial disasters. In terms of coaching, Milbury twice named himself head coach, and both times it turned into a circus more apt for Ringling Bros. than a hockey rink.

Steve Stirling (2003-06) The Islanders brought in Steve Stirling as the player-friendly antidote to Laviolette’s hard-driving style—but an affable attitude did not inspire success. Stirling’s first season saw the team finish with a 38-29-11-4 record, before losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. That would prove to be Stirling’s apex, as the team faltered during his next season and he was axed after 42 games.

20170127_XAL_LNW_PG00-1:24January23,2017

Peter Laviolette (2001-03) Peter Laviolette’s tenure on the Island began on a positive note, with the long-suffering franchise tasting the playoffs for the first time since 1994. With a scrappy gang of role players led by captain Michael Peca and pricey sniper Alexi Yashin, the team looked poised to shake its reputation as a leaguewide joke. It wasn’t meant to be however, as Laviolette’s chilly relationship with general manager Mike Milbury and owner Charles Wang eventually boiled over, leading to the coach’s termination. Laviolette went on to win the Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes, while the Islanders descended into a string of unsuccessful seasons.
