The newly-unveiled titanosaur keeps large company BY CHRISTY HINKO

Last week, the American Museum of Natural History in New York City unveiled its newest exhibit, the 122-foot long titanosaur.
The gargantuan replica of fossils that were unearthed in 2014 in an Argentinian desert near La Flecha, 135 miles west of Trelew, Patagonia, belong to that of the sauropod family of dinosaurs. The largest land animals are dinosaurs and coincidentally, all of the most massive dinos were longnecked herbivores. Thank goodness for that. Could you imagine the
daily appetite of a meat-eater measuring in at more than 70 tons? Another large sauropod, apatosaurus, which is also on display on the fourth floor of the museum, is 86 feet long and in life would have weighed between 30 and 40 tons, roughly half the weight of the museum’s new 70-ton titanosaur, which is one of the largest sauropods ever discovered.
The museum’s 94-foot model of a blue whale is nearly 30-feet shorter than this titanosaur. But even with the discovery of this gigantic dinosaur, blue whales are still the heaviest species that ever existed, weighing up to 200 tons. Researchers claim that the bruhathkayosaurus is the largest dinosaur ever found, measuring in

BOOK REVIEW
Brian Kilmeade’s Favorite Moments In Military History BY CHRISTY HINKO
CHINKO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
With the success of the book Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates, author Brian Kilmeade recently shared with Long Island Weekly his love of military history and events, and the shaping of the nation. “I love forgotten stories and unknown stories about famous characters,” said Kilmeade. “In addition to the historical events surrounding the topics of my current book and George Washington’s Secret Six [2014], I would have to say two of my favorite historical events would be the War of 1812’s battles of Baltimore and New Orleans. “The third historical event that I find interesting would be more current: the surge in Iraq and the way we were able to use the Sunnis’ awakening to fight for their own freedom. I think that’s America at its best, that we leave Iraq and do not take the oil shows we were there for the right reasons.” Check out page 14A for more about Brian Kilmeade and his latest book.
War of 1812: Battle of Baltimore, 1814 With 1,000 dedicated American defenders manning the guns of Fort McHenry, and knowing that it would be folly to approach closer before the fort was reduced, the British fleet halts just out of range of Fort McHenry’s cannons. Then their bomb ketches and rocket ships began to barrage the fort with rockets, bombs and incendiaries. It was the sight of the American flag still flying at the end of this unsuccessful attack that prompted Francis Scott Key to write the words to The Star Spangled Banner. (Painting by Chris White, photo by Mike Fitzpatrick)
War of 1812: Battle of New Orleans, 1815 The Battle of New Orleans was the final battle of the War of 1812 (Jan. 8-18, 1815). American combatants, commanded by Major General Andrew Jackson, prevented the British Army, Royal Marines and a large Royal Navy fleet from seizing New Orleans as a strategic tool to end the war by using it as a starting point for an occupation of the vast territory the United States had acquired from the Louisiana Purchase. Pictured: General Andrew Jackson stands on the parapet of his makeshift defenses as his troops repulse attacking Highlanders, as imagined by painter Edward Percy Moran in 1910.
Iraq War: Surge of 2007 In January 2007, President George W. Bush called for the increase of American troops in Iraq, in order to provide security to Baghdad and Al Anbar Province. Bush ordered the deployment of more than 20,000 soldiers into Iraq and sent the majority of them into Baghdad. He also extended the tours of most of the Army troops and some of the Marines who were in the Anbar Province area. The president described the overall objective as establishing a “...unified, democratic federal Iraq that can govern itself, defend itself, and sustain itself, and is an ally in the War on Terror.”

Fat Tuesday Fare At Big Daddy’s “Mardi Gras is an excuse to party at a time of year when there’s not a lot going on,” said Big Daddy’s’ manager Tommy Kurtz. “And whatever you’re going to give up, you go nuts with on Fat Tuesday.”

In some early preparation of Mardi Gras on Feb. 9, I went to Big Daddy’s in Massapequa to find out how to celebrate what they call down in NOLA, Chef Craig Bedell Fat Tuesday. This Cajun/Creole/ BBQ joint has a Mardi Gras flair all year long, but everything is amped up in the one week period before Ash Wednesday.

the traditional dishes. Gumbo, a heavily seasoned stew, originated in Louisiana during the 1800s and reflects the region’s African, Caribbean, Native American and Western European cultures. Okra, an African vegetable, thickens the gumbo as does file powder of the Choctaws that is made of dried and ground sassafras. Jambalaya is often described as a distant relative of paella. Muffuletta, the quintessential New Orleans sandwich of cured meats, cheeses and olive salad, is a legacy of the Italian immigrant who came to New Orleans.

½ cup andouille sausage ½ cup smoked turkey ½ cup tasso ham 1 cup onions ½ cup chopped celery ½ cup chopped bell peppers 2 tbsp chopped garlic 2 oz oil or butter 1 tsp salt 1 tsp black pepper ½ tsp crushed red pepper 1. Combine above ingredients in a large pot. 2. Sweat until onions are translucent; stirring constantly for approximately 20 to 30 minutes until meat starts to caramelize.
FAT TUESDAY from page 8A Colored beads and trinkets Purple, green and gold are the traditional Mardi Gras colors, a color scheme chosen by the 1872 King of Mardi Gras. Twenty years later, meaning was attached to the colors: purple for justice, green for faith and gold for power. These are the colors of the beaded necklaces tossed to onlookers during the parades. In the early days of Mardi Gras, in the 1840s, masqueraders in carriages tossed bonbons and sugar coated almonds to the onlookers.
Add: 2 cups crushed San Marzano tomatoes 2 ears corn, shucked 2 quarts beef or chicken stock 2 bay leaves Simmer for an hour and then season with: 1 tbsp hot sauce 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce Fresh thyme, parsley and oregano 1. Make a roux of ½ cup butter cooked with ½ cup flour and crumble this over the meat mixture. 2. Add okra cut crosswise and cook for 15 minutes to half an hour. 3. Mix gumbo file with cold water and add just before serving. 4. Serve with rice. Dessert King Cake is the way to end the meal. This rich yeast, Danishlike cake is colorfully decorated with Mardi Gras purple, green and gold sugar. Inside the cake is a little plastic baby, said to represent baby Jesus. Kurtz said that there’s a tradition that the person who gets the piece of cake with the baby is responsible for throwing the party the next year. At Big Daddy’s, you go home with a token of their appreciation.

Dominating the main gallery of the Nassau County’s African American Museum in Hempstead is “The Good the Bad and the Beautiful” exhibit, some of the most colorful Brazilian abstractions by Ernani Silva. Best known for some of his series work like “Carnival” and “Women again the Wind”, Silva said his work has become “less primitive” while continuing to reflect Brazil’s vibrant traditions. Silva’s work is alive, moving on the canvas, blending African, Indian and European influences on Brazil’s culture. Silva, born in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, began painting when he was 14 years old. He moved to the United States in 1989 and now lives in Massapequa. Private collectors of Silva’s work include: Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Senator Edward Kennedy, actress Ruby Dee, House of Dereon designer Tina Knowles, actor Andy Garcia and jazz singer Cassandra Wilson. Silva’s “The Good the Bad and the Beautiful” is on display at the African American Museum, 110 North Franklin St. in Hempstead, open Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free parking is available behind the museum. Dark Thoughts
Days after 9/11, Chopra placed a full-page ad in newspapers titled “The Deeper Wound,” a meditation on the meaning of the event. He called for soul searching and wrote, “None of us will safe behind the shield of military might and stockpiled arsenals. There can be no safety until the root cause is faced. In this moment of shock I don’t think anyone of us has the answers. It is imperative that we pray and offer solace and help to each other. But if you and I are having a single thought of violence or hatred against anyone in the world at this moment, we
are contributing to the wounding of the world.” Chopra is disturbed about the violent consequences of that fateful day. He said he’s reading a book titled Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari, which graphically describes our species’ extermination of other humanoids. “The conclusion is that the human species is psychotic, and the madness is magnified by [modern technology and weapons],” Chopra said. “We live in an insane asylum.” Asked about his legacy, Chopra said that to believe in one’s enduring permanence or influence is “vanity. Time marches on.” His many books and videos will potentially help people far into the future, and some of the good works of his foundation will bear fruit. But he remains realistic. “Maybe we’ll be remembered for a generation or two, then we’ll be forgotten. Nobody will give a hoot,” he concluded.
Chopra In Person Chopra will present “The Future of Wellbeing” on Sunday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Colden Auditorium at the Kupferberg Center for the Arts, Queens College, 65-30 Kissena Blvd., Flushing. According to the website, Chopra will “create a roadmap for ‘higher health,’ based on the latest findings in both mainstream and alternative medicine.” Tickets: $39–$79. The Nature Of Nature
Chopra said early on he was drawn to neuroendocrinology, the study of brain chemistry, which became his medical specialty. His life’s task, the focus of his further study and research, is to answer the question, “What is fundamental reality?” and “How do biochemical processes influence consciousness?” “It’s one of the hardest problems in science,” he said of the nature of consciousness. Last November, Chopra published his latest book, Super Genes, written with Rudolph E. Tanzi, a neuroscientist at Harvard’s Massachusetts General Hospital. The essential thesis of the book is that genes do not totally determine your destiny and can work with one’s environment and lifestyles in complex ways that can lead to good outcomes. As Tanzi told the New York Post: “Most of what
you inherit [the DNA from your parents] is written in clay rather than stone. That means you have the chance to be a sculptor.” “It was a very exciting book to do,” Chopra noted. “A mainstream, very well-known neurogeneticist working with me, a (in ironic tones) fringe figure.” The book puts a primacy on proper dieting and exercise as keys to improving one’s wellness and health outcomes. Chopra made note of New Year’s resolutions and the popularity of physical fitness centers in early January. He admits that changing one’s lifestyle is difficult. “Change—when it’s not brought on by a crisis—can only occur through a profound inner spiritual experience and a shift in consciousness,” he said.

we’d have nothing to do or talk about.” He has also been scorned for his high lecture fees and millionaire status—at odds, his critics say, with his spiritual advice and warnings against excessive materialism. When asked about his wealth, Chopra said that much of his money is poured into the Chopra Foundation, whose aim is to create “a peaceful, just, sustainable, and healthy world.”

A Tale Of Two Basketball Brothers BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO
DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
The New York City pro basketball universe got a little cozier when Robin Lopez signed with the New York Knicks in July 2015. He wound up joining his twin Brook, who was originally drafted 10th overall by
the New Jersey Nets in 2008 and made the move to Brooklyn with the team in the 2012-13 season. And while the Lopez brothers played together at Stanford University, the one constant throughout their lives has understandably been a fair degree of sibling rivalry. Long Island Weekly recently had a chance to find out part of what makes these hermanos tick.
Robin Lopez 1. Favorite player growing up. Magic Johnson and Tim Duncan
Brook Lopez 1. Favorite player growing up. Kevin Garnett
2. Earliest basketball memory involving your brother. Playing on the court at halftime during our older brother’s games.
4. Most memorable NBA moment. The 2010 Western Conference Finals
2. Earliest basketball memory involving your brother. Every time I’d meet a new coach growing up when I went to a different college or something like that, they’d all tell me the same thing at their camps. They’d all tell me they remembered Robin and I running around the gym, fighting and throwing shoes at each other. I don’t remember throwing shoes at each other, but apparently that’s what we did.
5. What is your typical game-day meal. Pasta.
3. Best part of your brother’s game. His motor, shot blocking and his general hustle.
6. What is the most unusual pre-game ritual you do. None.
4. Most memorable NBA moment. Dunking on Robin, definitely.
3. Best part of your brother’s game. His shooting touch.
7. Worst part of your brother’s game. Everything except his shooting touch. 8. Most embarrassing NBA moment. I’ll get back to you.
5. What is your typical game-day meal. I switch it up a little, but I always have popcorn from the Calvin Klein lounge (at Barclays Center). 6. What is the most unusual pre-game ritual you do. During my pregame nap for our Dec. 16 game, I listened to the soundtrack of Fantasia. I switch it up. 7. Worst part of your brother’s game. His style. 8. Most embarrassing NBA moment. Not an NBA moment, but in the first grade I was playing in a second grade league and I went up for a rebound and my shorts were too big and they just fell right down. I went for my shorts. I didn’t go for the ball, I didn’t try to be cool. I let the ball go and I went for my shorts.
