Patriots, Eagles Set For Rematch ESPN analyst Adam Schefter shares his thoughts on Super Bowl LII BY JENNIFER FAUCI JFAUCI@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
Adam Schefter

ame day has finally arrived and ESPN sports analyst Adam Schefter has followed all 32 of the NFL teams throughout the entire football season. On Sunday, it comes down to two. Not only are the Eagles looking for their first Super Bowl win, they are seeking redemption against the Patriots since the last time they met in the Super Bowl—almost 15 years ago. As he prepares to cover another Super Sunday match up, Schefter shares his thoughts on what he thinks each team needs to do to win.
Q A
How many Super Bowls have you covered?
Every Super Bowl since the 1994 season, so 24. This will be my 25th. My first Super Bowl was Chargers-49ers in Miami, January 1995.
Q
Q
In your opinion, what do the Eagles and the Patriots need to do to win the big game?
A
For New England to win, it will need a few things to happen. It will need its offensive line to give Tom Brady time. In the Super Bowls that New England and Brady have lost, the Giants were able to get Brady off his mark and off his game. The pressure influenced his throws and, eventually, the outcome of the game. Philadelphia has a talented enough defensive front to get the pressure it needs on Brady; it will be up to the Patriots’ offensive line to slow it down. The Patriots’ run defense has been suspect throughout the season, but it has gotten better as the season has gone on. Early on, running backs such as Kansas City’s Kareem Hunt did what they wanted to the Patriots defense. But as the season went on, Patriots’ defensive coordinator and soon-to-be Lions’ head coach Matt Patricia helped improve the unit. In
They traded a fourth-round draft pick to Miami for running back Jay Ajayi, signed LeGarrette Blount away from the Patriots during the off-season and have the type of backs capable of controlling this game. Now they have to do it.
this game, the Eagles will want to and have to run the football. They cannot count on Nick Foles to win the game for them the way he did in the NFC Championship game against the Vikings. So if the Patriots can slow down the Eagles’ rushing attack, advantage New England.
Q A
How do you think the game will play out?
Of course this is a game that will be about turnovers; it usually is. Under head coach Bill Belichick, the Patriots are 16-0 in the postseason when they have had a positive turnover differential. Factoring in the regular season, the Patriots are 159-15 when they have a positive turnover differential. So if the Patriots force Foles and the Eagles into turnovers that will be a wrap. From the Eagles’ standpoint, they
cannot turn over the football. They have to be the team that gets the turnovers, not loses them. If that happens, Philadelphia has a chance.
Q A
Let’s talk performance. What needs to happen on the field?
The Eagles need Foles to play the way he did in the NFC Championship game against the Vikings, which was his best game of this season. It was the type of performance that can boost Foles’ confidence going into this Super Bowl. Think about it: when the Patriots have been beaten in the Super Bowl, Eli Manning played some of the best football of his career. Foles will have to perform at a similar level to give the Eagles a chance. And we talked about the Patriots slowing down the Eagles’ rushing attack; well, the Eagles have to be able to go out and run the football.

What was the most memorable Super Bowl you covered?
A
Back when I was a newspaper reporter in Denver, there wasn’t a better Super Bowl than Super Bowl XXXII, when the Broncos won their first ever championship, upsetting the Green Bay Packers in San Diego. But, it’s hard to top last year’s, when New England had its record comeback against Atlanta; it was a game that people were talking about weeks after it happened, and still talk about today. The Giants win over the Patriots to end their unbeaten season, when David Tyree had the helmet catch and Plaxico Burress the game-winning catch, also was one of the greatest football games ever played. And the Patriots’ victory over Seattle, when Malcolm Butler picked off Russell Wilson also was up there. The Patriots have a knack for playing memorable Super Bowls. Hopefully this is another.

Super Blankets
Breakfast Blankets
BY STEVE MOSCO
SMOSCO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
P
igs in a blanket is the perfect food for mouth-popping while the eyes are locked on the TV for a big play or ridiculous commercial during the Super Bowl. But the perfection of a mini-hot dog rolled in warm, toasty dough notwithstanding, this is America—the land of opportunity and innovation. With that in mind, there is always room for improvement, even in the case of cocktail wieners. Here on Long Island, we have access to an ever-widening array of ethnic cuisines and recipes. This makes the adherence to one form of pig in a single variety of blanket downright ludicrous. In the spirit of Super Bowl snack time, here are three variations on that winning formula.
Those mini-breakfast sausages are perfect for dough treatment, and pairing this maple-tinged meat with biscuit dough is a no-brainer. Breakfast for dinner is one of the greatest eating innovations of all time—therefore, breakfast for snacking is a natural and must-needed progression. Brownand-serve sausages are fine in this application, as are the fresh, homemade variety for the more aspirational super chef. As for the biscuit, these are easy enough to rustle together using store-bought ingredients.
Porco In Una Coperta Italians are the champs of equating food with love and rightfully so, as Italian food fills the belly with warmth—artery-clogging warmth. That warmth can be extended to
Super Bowl, one of the top eating holidays of the year. Making an Italian spin on pigs in a blanket is easy, simply substitute sweet or hot Italian sausage and mozzarella cheese while brushing your dough with pesto or Italian dressing. Whip up some marinara sauce for dipping on the side.
Cuban Twist The classic Cubano sandwich layers pork, ham and Swiss cheese with mustard and pickles on pressed
sandwich bread—this is easily translatable to the form of pigs in a blanket. Use crescent dough as the blanket, but spread a thin layer Dijon and honey mustard on the raw dough before adding a classic cocktail frank and Swiss cheese. Roll up and brush the tops with melted butter. To complete the Cubano, mix relish and mustard together for a dip that combines pickles and mustard sharpness to each bite. Intercepting Influenza Officials make plea to public for flu awareness
BY STEVE MOSCO

With several weeks left in the 201718 influenza season, local doctors and elected officials are urging residents to get the flu shot and take simple steps to stave off the spread of the disease. “It is not too late for a flu shot and if you contract the flu, there is evidence that the flu shot can decrease the severity of symptoms and help stave off complications,” said Dr. Alan Mensch, MD, from Plainview Hospital. “It sounds simple, but you must cover Young children are especially vulnerable your mouth when you cough or to the flu. Cases of influenza rose by 54% and new cases were diagnosed in all counties of the state over the past week. In addition, 1,606 New Yorkers have been hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza, the highest weekly number since Department of Health reporting began in 2004. County Executive Lauren Curran reiterated the statements of Governor Andrew Cuomo, stating that it is not too late in the season to get the flu shot. “Getting vaccinated is the single best way for people to protect not only themselves, but those around them, including people at high risk for serious complications, like babies, pregnant women, older adults and those with certain chronic medical conditions,” she said. Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein, health commissioner for the Nassau County Department of Health, said that though the vaccine’s effectiveness can vary, those who are inoculated have a much better chance of fighting the flu should they contract it. “Even though the effectiveness of the flu vaccine can vary from year to year, vaccinated individuals who contract the illness will usually have a milder course and are less likely to be hospitalized or die from flu-related complications,” said Eisenstein. “Flu season typically peaks on the East Coast in late winter, so it’s not too late to get vaccinated.” The symptoms of the flu can vary from mild to severe illness and often come on suddenly. Symptoms may include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, chills and fatigue. Some people may also have vomiting and diarrhea. The CDC recommends that antiviral drugs be used early to treat hospitalized patients, people with severe illness, and people who are at high risk of serious flu complications based on their age or health. Antiviral drugs are medications that can be used to fight flu illness and work best when started within two days of symptoms first appearing. “Tamiflu is the main treatment,” said Mensch. “Exactly how effective
Tamiflu is seems up for debate, but we know that it can shorten the course of the flu by hours or a day. Tamiflu must be taken within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms. Once the flu takes hold, the drug is not effective.” Local school districts are also taking precautions in stemming the tide of flu cases among students. Patricia Ramond, MSN, BSN, RN, the Garden City School District’s lead nurse, said that several of the schools have seen seven to eight cases over the last two weeks and at one school, four of the cases were in the same class. “I have encouraged parents to report illnesses and to keep their child home if sick,” said Ramond. “The state has requirements of school nurses that specify posting flu information in our buildings. All of the schools have posted the information.” Ramond said that the information outlines symptoms and three recommendations from the CDC: Get the flu vaccine; preventative measures; take antivirals if prescribed. “Preventatively, buildings have information posted about cough etiquette and hand washing technique,” she said. “I, for one, go from class to class and review these components with students as Kindergarten and first grade are an important time to learn these vital features of good hygiene.” Mensch echoed those sentiments on maintaining personal hygiene as the first line of defense against the flu. “Avoid touching things like handrails or banisters and then touching your face, especially your eyes, nose and mouth—the portals of entry,” he said. “Stay away from people who are sick and if you are sick, stay home and away from others. Wash your hands often and keep some Purell nearby.”

Super Snacks BY JENNIFER FAUCI
JFauci@antonmediagroup.com
The biggest Sunday of the year has finally arrived. The episode of This Is Us where all of our questions are finally answered. Since the Super Bowl has officially become the pregame to NBC’s hit show, you’re going to need some sustenance. Check out these flavorful recipes that are perfect for game day and delicious for dinner any night of the week. “Champagne is always a good bet. It’s only 90 calories a glass,” said chef Rocco DiSpirito. But instead of a big game beverage, DiSpirito offers up his vegetarian chili, a welcome respite from chicken wings and burgers.
Veggie Chili
Killer Mac & Cheese with Bacon
Recipe courtesy of Anne Burrell
Serves 6-8 Extra-virgin olive oil 6 slices bacon, cut crosswise into ½-inch strips 3 Tbsp unsalted butter 1 onion, cut into ¼-inch dice ½ cup all-purpose flour 1 qt whole milk, plus more as needed 1 lb shells or other short pasta 2 cups freshly grated Cheddar cheese 2 cups freshly grated Fontina cheese 1 cup freshly grated Parmigiano ¼ cup Dijon mustard Tabasco or other hot sauce, to taste Kosher salt 1. Drizzle a bit of olive oil in a large saucepan, add bacon and bring the pan to medium heat. When it’s brown and crispy remove it from the pan, drain on paper towels and reserve the bacon fat. 2. Add butter and onion to the pan with the fat, season with salt and cook until the onion is soft and aromatic, 8 to10 minutes. Add flour and cook, stirring frequently, for 4 to 5 minutes.
Slowly whisk in milk, season with salt, bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer. Cook over low heat for 8 to 10 minutes. 3. Bring a large pot of well-salted water to a boil. Add pasta, cook for 1 minute less than the instructions on the package suggest. It should be toothsome with just a
little nugget of hard pasta in center. Drain the pasta and reserve. 4. Add the Cheddar, Fontina and Parmigiano to the milk and whisk to combine. Add the mustard and a few shakes of Tabasco. Stir in cooked bacon and pasta. Serve immediately or transfer to a baking dish and reheat in a 375°F oven.
Recipe courtesy of Rocco DiSpirito Serves 4 1 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 2 cups diced onions ½ cup diced red bell pepper 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 2 tsp chili powder 4 cups chopped tomatoes 1 can (15 oz.) red kidney beans, drained and rinsed 1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onions and bell pepper and sweat until soft and translucent, about 10 minutes. Add the garlic and cook until soft, another 2-3 minutes. 2. Add the chili powder and cook for one minute or until fragrant. Add the tomatoes and kidney beans and cook until thickened, about 15 minutes. A huge fan of comfort food, chef Anne Burrell loves a Super Bowl with some hearty options. “Everyone thinks of mac and chees e as comfort food, but there’s a lot of bad mac and cheese out there, and frankly, that food makes me uncomfortable,” said Burrell of some not-so-great cheesy dishes. “Great mac and cheese should be creamy and tangy and luscious—it should get me excited with every bite. I promise that this recipe is what mac and cheese should be. And it’s got bacon. What could be better?”
BOOK FEATURE
Lucky Bastard: Growing Up Buck BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO dgilderuBio@antonmediagroup.com
As someone who is the lead play-by-play announcer for both Major League Baseball (MLB) and the National Football League (NFL), it shouldn’t be a surprise that Joe Buck is one of the more heavily criticized broadcasters in the business. It’s something he’s well aware of and touches on frequently throughout his memoir Lucky Bastard: My Life, My Dad, and the Things I’m Not Allowed to Say on TV. While it’s easy to go into this book with preconceived notions about what Buck might be like, the way he and co-author Michael Rosenberg approached this project just might have you looking at the former differently. The tone taken throughout is candid, self-deprecating and
most importantly, laugh-outloud funny. The Missouri native is well aware of the nepotism charge that’s often leveled at him given that his father was late Hall of Fame broadcaster Jack Buck. Or that Buck the younger became the youngest man to ever announce a regular slate of NFL games on network television when he was hired by Fox at the age of 25 back in 1994. Along the way, it’s revealed that Buck was the product of an affair, wasn’t initially keen about having Tim McCarver as a broadcast partner and knew actors Paul Rudd and Jon Hamm long before fame came knocking for that duo. Along with gratuitous name-dropping (which he freely admits to) and anecdotes about not only having famous ball players like Stan Musial and
manager Bruce Bochy end up being friends of the family, Buck comes clean about self-doubt and being a hair plug addict. Given that he opens himself to criticism on social media and through his regular full-time job, Buck’s willingness to put himself in such a vulnerable position is really admirable. Throughout Lucky Bastard, Buck is honest about his shortcomings, comes off as a loyal friend, a great father and incredibly humble. It all winds up being a funny and refreshing read.

All The World’s A Stage For Jason Mraz BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO
dgilderuBio@antonmediagroup.com
For all the platinum albums and Grammys that he’s accrued, being a performer is what really revs Jason Mraz’s creative engine. And it’s something he’s been doing on Broadway, playing the role of Dr. Jim Pomatter in the Sara Bareilles musical Waitress during a 10-week run that started on Nov. 3 and runs through Feb. 11. For someone who lives to play before a crowd, it’s the perfect opportunity for Mraz to put a twist on doing something he lives for. “It’s been a dream gig that I never thought would come in my lifetime, but I’m so glad it did. It’s a blast. As a performer, the greatest part is just being able to perform. With Broadway, you get to do it eight times a week and you don’t have to travel. There’s no better deal than that,” Mraz explained. “I get to leave Jason Mraz upstairs in the dressing room and I get to be Dr. Pomatter and sing his songs that were written by Sara [Bareilles] and that’s a joy too as a performer because when I have to do my show, I have to figure out my set list and what the narrative and story that my audience is going to go
through. There’s so much ego, narcissism and neuroses that goes into being a performing songwriter and I get to put all that aside and go downstairs and just be a performer, which is all I ever wanted to do in the first place. So this is a thrill.” Mraz first met Waitress composer Bareilles back at the 2009 Grammys, when both performers were nominated (and subsequently lost) while attending with their respective moms. It was a fortuitous meeting that led to greater things down the road. “We’d both known each other through the radio scene and some mutual friends, but that was the night that we actually met. And I found out how hilarious, kind and down-to-earth she is and we’ve been acquaintances since then,” Mraz said. “We’ve become friends more in the last couple of years through the community and obviously even closer now that we’ve been collaborating on this show.” Once his Broadway run ends, the Virginia native is primed to ideally release his first new album since 2014’s Yes! Extensive touring, both solo and with a band, also promises to fill up the rest of 2018. Suffice it to say, Mraz feels he’s in a
really good place in his career. “[My label and I] know that this show has brought a lot of attention and awareness to us, so we shouldn’t wait any longer. It’s been four years since I put an album out, so I better get to it,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of great songs and I’ve been performing every summer for the last three years. I have a lot of new material. I just haven’t made the time to record and organize them until now.” Jason Mraz will be appearing in Waitress through Feb. 11 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, 256 W. 47th St., NYC. Visit www.brooks atkinsontheatretickets.com or call 212-966-3232 for more information. Visit www. longislandweekly. com to read a fuller version of this story and Jason Mraz plays Dr. Pomatter in Waitress, through Feb. 11. Jason Mraz’s favorite (Photo by Joan Marcus) musicals.

Although the Islanders are not currently playing their home games on Long Island, there is still a professional team competing in Nassau Coliseum. The Long Island Nets of the NBA’s G League are an affiliate of the Brooklyn Nets. The G League has become like a minor league system for the NBA. Although it is not the NBA, G League teams still have exceptional talent. There have been a number of players that have come out of the G League and become successful NBA players. If your family enjoys attending sporting events, a Long Island Nets game could be an exciting place to spend a night together.
Sledding at Cedar Creek Park Seaford
If you are looking for a good place to go sledding, Cedar Creek Park in Seaford is one of the best options out there. Cedar Creek has multiple hills and very few trees, making it one of the best places to go sledding on Long Island. There are also park officials that help organize the sledding to ensure it is safe for everyone. Best of all, it is free. As long as you have your own sled, there is no cost to spending the day sledding at Cedar Creek Park.
Movie Marathon at Home
You don’t need to go out to have an exciting night with the family. One fun thing you can do at home is have a movie marathon with the whole family. There are a number of different movie series that the entire family can enjoy. There are classics such as the Star Wars series and the Back to the Future series. There are more recent films like the Spider-Man series and the Pirates of the Caribbean series. Regardless of which movies you choose to
watch, a family movie night is never a bad choice.

Massapequa
Escape rooms have become an extremely popular game in the United States. Your group is locked in a room, and given a story behind why you are in the room. You may be locked in the hold of a pirate ship after the captain caught you trying to steal his treasure, or you may be in the home of a mob boss trying to find where his black

students to have role models as well as to be role models. “It is a formula for empathy and self-esteem that makes students comfortable entering their high school environment poised for leadership and success.”
Growing up at Green Vale has many benefits, but one unique element, according to Pell, is the ability to “meet students where they are” in life and in learning. “With a clear focus on the childhood and early adolescent years through eighth grade, we are able to corral all of our institutional expertise,” she said. “Children who grow up at Green Vale experience comforting continuity with familiar teachers, families, campus facilities and traditions, while being pushed to challenge themselves in diverse ways through exposure to broadening experiences from athletics to arts to service learning to public speaking.” When the time comes for parents to embark on their child’s academic
career, sometimes the choice isn’t as simple as public or private school. While both educational intuitions provide an excellent learning experience, it comes down to how parents want to shape their children moving forward. “Green Vale is known first and foremost for an academic program that is unsurpassed for these grade levels on Long Island. At a younger age than is common in most schools, Green Vale

Attending a private school/preparatory academy from a young age can prepare children for secondary learning in high school, college and in the professional world. Institutionally committed to childhood and early adolescence, The Green Vale School, which serves the pre-nursery through eighth grade age spectrum, “fosters an intimate community where growth is both slow and magically transformative,” according to Allison Pell, director of marketing and communications for the school. “Academic rigor is achieved through a skills-based yet progressive curriculum that incorporates abovegrade-level content. Our ‘know each child’ approach allows advanced coursework to be the norm, without undue pressure or stress,” said Pell of the close-knit campus of condensed age range, which allows

INTERNATIONAL WORD FIND Saturday Specials
ARIES (March 21-April 19). You’ll be energized by social contact this week. Not everyone will be so socially inclined though. People have different tolerance levels for dealing with others. For some, it takes all the patience they can muster just to eat next to another person. You’ll be rewarded in a special way for being sensitive to this dynamic.
Solution: 25 Letters
TAURUS (April 20-May 20). How do you feel about advertisers seeing what you’ve been shopping for online and targeting ads specifically to you? Does it make life better because you’re being catered to, or worse for the constant temptation? This week, you’ll ponder and update your opinions on modern life. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Willingness is a powerful and underrated anti-force. We put so much emphasis on effort, because effort is usually visible and tangible. Yet willingness is more of a mode, an attitude and an invitation. The universe is feeling your willingness this week and, because of this, you’ll be shown precisely what to do next. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Among the top minds of our time, the exceptional scientific genius Stephen Hawking admits that science leaves no room for the subjective aspect of consciousness in its attempt to know the world as relationships between atoms, forces and molecules. You’ll dip into intangible, hard-to-quantify parts of life this week.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Some say it’s healthy to turn thoughts into words to get them out of your head. Others suggest that some thoughts don’t deserve to become words, because words become stories, and stories become identities that form behaviors that become habits that turn into destinies. Well, it’s something to be discerning about. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You’ll be pulled to meditation as a way of creating calm and peace. There are many kinds of meditation that could work for you -- it’s a state of mind, not any singular activity. Your spiritual state might open up in the practice of art, music or sports. The thing you’re drawn to, whatever it may be, is the perfect entry point. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). If you take a piece of blue litmus paper and dip a tip into a bathtub of acid, the tip will turn pink. If you dip another tip of the same paper into just one drop of acid, the tip will turn equally as pink. In a similar way, some aspects of life require but a drop of participation to get the desired result. Once you turn pink, move on. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Good listeners aren’t just better at having conversations. Good listeners are better at business, driving, sports, negotiating, animal training, teaching, learning and love. Your willingness to lean in and give your full attention will help you in everything you do this week. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Just as each possession you own has its place, each person in your life fulfills a role. OK, maybe both of those statements are a stretch. After all, you have plenty of stuff you don’t quite know what to do with, and it’s the same with your social life. You’re figuring it out though and getting organized on all fronts. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). There are certain thoughts you’d like to believe but they are so far away from what you already believe that to even try and think them causes dissonance, an irritatingly unharmonious internal vibration. The answer is to move your ideas in small steps, like a singer humming up the scale. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). If you step back too far, then the enormity of the challenge at hand will seem overwhelming. So don’t. Go forward, ever forward. It’s the immediate task that needs attention, and then the one after that. Put your head down until you’ve 100 small completions under your belt. Then look back and let that inspire you.
THIS WEEK’S BIRTHDAYS
You’ll drop a fear and prove something to yourself in April, though not necessarily in that order. It’s an extraordinary group assembling around you this year -- supporters, colleagues, teammates and a few frenemies in the mix. Out of shared experience, a culture grows. This gets really fun with a victory in May. July brings an unusual adventure that’s very specific to you and begins out of a desire to connect with a special person. Tip: The secret to comfort is to stop chasing happiness. COPYRIGHT 2018 CREATORS.COM

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). The good news is that if your life gets whipped up into a frothy scramble at least once this week, it will have the best kind of effect. The bad news is that your life won’t get scrambled unless you make that happen on purpose with an activity that’s totally out of the norm. The pattern interrupt will enrich you in unforeseen ways.

MUSIC
Great Halftime Shows BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

n its quest to make a money grab and draw in people who only care about the ads that run during America’s greatest secular holiday, the National Football League has made the halftime show the centerpiece of the Super Bowl. It’s certainly evolved from the days when Up With People and Chubby Checker were considered front-line entertainment. Artists featured here are performers who actually, you know, played their instruments and did it well. So while there will be readers who complain about the absence of people like Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, Madonna and Katy Perry, my list has less to do with how you command a stage while lip-synching and being accompanied by an army of dancers, special effects and Land Sharks and more about what you do at center stage as a musician.
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, 2009
Arguably one of the greatest live performers, Springsteen delivered an explosive set that had viewers following his directions to “step away from the guacamole and put the chicken fingers down.” Opening with “Tenth Avenue Freezeout,” Jersey’s favorite son proceeded to tear through “Born to Run” and “Working On a Dream” before wrapping up his 12-minute set with a reading of “Glory Days” that had a football-oriented lyrical tweak applied to it.

U2, 2002
Emotions were still raw roughly five months after the devastation of September 11 and U2 wound up being the perfect Super Bowl halftime act. Stopping off from their Elevation tour, the quartet brought their heartshaped stage to the Superdome to play a set that opened with “Beautiful Day” (with a snippet of “In God’s Country” woven in), before shifting gears to “MLK” and finally “Where the Streets Have No Name,” that featured a scrolling rear screen displaying the names of all the victims who died in the attacks. Bono capped it off by ripping open his jacket to reveal an American flag sewn into the lining.
Prince, 2007
The elements could not keep the Purple One down as he performed in a downpour that found him wielding his purple, symbol-shaped guitar in a phallic manner while ripping through his own classics (“1999,” “Let’s Go Crazy”) before shifting gears and tearing into gems by Ike & Tina Turner/CCR (“Proud Mary”), Jimi Hendrix/Bob Dylan (“All Along The Watchtower”) and the Foo Fighters (“Best of Me”) before capping it all off with a tremendous version of “Purple Rain.” Epic.

Beating Brady And Belichick BY CHRIS BIRSNER
EDITORIAL@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
W
hat do you think of when you hear the name “New England Patriots?” You may spit at the ground and yell “cheaters.” You may groan knowing you’ve seen them win game after game, championship after championship. But there’s one thing that can’t be denied of this Patriots dynasty: they’ve been a dominant force that’s been hard to stop. Now, on the cusp on their eighth Super Bowl appearance in the Tom Brady and Bill Belichick era, only the Philadelphia Eagles stand in the way from yet another New England celebration. So how do Doug Pederson, Nick Foles and the underdog Eagles pull the upset? It’s easier said than done.
However, it isn’t impossible. Take it from the teams who’ve beat them in the playoffs over the last decade. The New York Giants are the only team to beat Brady and Belichick in the Super Bowl, and they did it twice. In 2008, the Giants won the NFC Championship after starting the playoffs as a wild card. They played an undefeated Patriots team for Super Bowl XLII, beating them 1714. The two teams squared off again in 2012 for Super Bowl XLVI, which led to the Giants winning a second time 21-17. The key to the two upset victories was the pressure put on Brady. The Giants pass rush tried to disrupt the pocket and hit Brady as quickly and often as possible. For example, in 2008, Brady was sacked five times and was held to only 229 passing yards. The Giants

There are ways to triumph over Tom Brady in the Super Bowl. (Photo by Jim Mahoney) offense made miraculous plays in both Super Bowls. In XLII, Eli Manning avoided a sack late in the fourth quarter to heave a ball down the field to David Tyree, who caught the ball by pinning the ball to his helmet. In XLVI, also late in the fourth quarter, Manning threw a high pass to Mario Manningham. He hauled in the ball before falling out of bounds. Both plays set up game-winning touchdowns in the respective Super Bowls. The Patriots have also had to deal with tough competition when making a run at a Super Bowl berth. The Baltimore Ravens eliminated the Patriots in 2010 and 2013 in the playoffs. The Wild Card round in 2010 was unlike what we’ve ever seen out of these Patriots. Brady threw three interceptions, was sacked three times, and had only 154 yards passing. The Ravens were able to run well against the Patriots defense, who allowed 226 rushing yards. The 2013 AFC Championship game was different as the Ravens spread the ball out to seven receivers and carried that, plus the usual pressuring defense, to a victory and an eventual Lombardi Trophy. The Giants weren’t the only New York team to give the Patriots problems. In 2011, the Jets knocked off the Patriots in the divisional round after they sacked Brady five times and ran for 120 rushing yards. The Jets had a very similar formula as the Ravens as they stuck to a ground attack on offense while making Brady uncomfortable on defense.

There’s only one team that has ended the Patriots season short of a Super Bowl in the last four seasons, and that’s the Denver Broncos. In the 2014 AFC Championship game, the Broncos racked up 507 yards of offense against the Patriots team, scoring on nearly every drive. The situation was much different in the 2016 AFC Championship game, as the Broncos’ victory was all thanks to the defense. The Broncos’ defensive front only allowed 44 rushing yards, while their secondary picked Brady off twice in a low-scoring game. Put it all together, you have quite a few ways you can look at shutting down the dynasty. On offense, running the ball is key to winning. The 2017 Patriots have done well against the run down the stretch, but struggled at times against the Jaguars in the AFC Championship. You will need to make one or two big throws in order to win, as the Patriots will adjust as the game goes on. Defensively, you need to swarm Brady and not let him get the ball out. He’s one of the best at getting the ball out quickly. Running back Dion Lewis is one of the Patriots’ most important weapons, as is tight end Rob Gronkowski. Keeping them from making big plays is critical for big games like this. If the Eagles can follow through on any of these parameters, they could deliver Philadelphia their first ever Super Bowl championship. If not, New England will be partying yet again on the first Sunday night in February.
