ore than 140 million audience members and counting; 1,823 pounds of body fat burned by conductors; 281 candles; 230 costumes; 125 people directly involved in each performance; 70 major theater awards; 30 years on Broadway; and one of the greatest shows of all time. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera has taken hold over Broadway for the past three decades. When the Phantom, a deformed but brilliant composer who haunts the Paris Opera House, tutors and falls in love with soprano Christine Daaé, he demands that she be given the lead role in productions or the opera house will face his wrath. As the spellbinding show celebrates the major milestone, Ali Ewoldt, who plays Christine, shared why she thinks the spectacle has settled in the hearts of so many theater lovers. “I fell in love with musical theater at a young age,” said Ewoldt, who grew up in the town of Pleasantville in Westchester County, NY. “Being so close to New York City, I always came in and saw shows. My aunt took me to my first musical, A Chorus Line, when I was 8. I saw Phantom when I was 10 and fell in love with it.” Ewoldt, who received her Liberal Arts degree from Yale University, took dance class and voice lessons as a child before deciding in high school that she wanted to pursue musical theater. After her college graduation, she figured she’d give it a go. “Dance was my first foray into this world. I studied classically, but Broadway musicals were always my love,” said Ewoldt, whose Broadway credits include Cosette in the first Broadway revival of Les Misérables and Maria in West Side Story. “To have a career doing regional shows wherever anyone would have me sing and act on stage…that was the dream.” While Ewoldt currently plays Christine, many would be surprised to learn that she had auditioned for the role on and off for 10 years.

When she received word that she had an offer to play the beautiful muse of the Phantom, she was in Chicago at a rehearsal for The King and I, in which she played Tuptim. “My initial reaction was, ‘are you sure…really?’ It’s pretty surreal,” said the high soprano, who believes that she and her character have a lot in common, and that she sees a lot of herself in Christine. “That is part of why I fell in love with her…that first moment is so magical when she’s called upon to sing and fulfill her heart’s desire in the opera house in front of everybody.” As for the setting, the Majestic Theatre is a beauty, and the stage has a multitude of moving parts and set pieces, like trap doors and candelabras that come up from the floor, all of

which are original to the show, including that iconic chandelier. “Ruthie Two is the name of our chandelier. The original, Ruthie One, is in London,” said Ewoldt of the replicated Paris Opera House chandelier, which has never been replaced in the production. “They really invested in technology so everything would stand the test of time. And the costumes are incredibly gorgeous. They’re a challenge to work in because they are so heavy, but putting them on really helps me get into the world of this Victorian era.” While every number in the show is special, Ewoldt’s favorite song to sing is “Wishing,” a fan favorite and for good reason. Ewoldt appreciates this as the moment Christine comes into her own, processing all of the insanity she is going through and asking for help from her father. “I love playing Christine because she has experienced tremendous loss in the loss of her father and she is trying to find her way in the world and gets wrapped up in these incredible love stories, but finds her footing in the end,” said Ewoldt on her character. “I think it’s so special to be part of something that has such an incredibly rich history.” It is that rich history of a girl and the man behind the mask that has lasted for three decades and, without question, many more to come. “Phantom has become synonymous with Broadway all over the world and I think it is such a unique masterpiece,” said Ewoldt. “The new Broadway shows owe great credit to what Phantom is: timeless and touching. Our audiences are delighted to see it and we absolutely love doing it.” For tickets and showtimes, visit www. thephantomoftheopera.com.

Chocolate’s Salty Side BY STEVE MOSCO

ith Valentine’s Day in the rear-view and Easter on the horizon, chocolate is everywhere this time of year. Heart-shaped boxes remain on the store shelves at severely marked-down prices, while chocolate bunnies and goo-filled chocolate eggs wait in the wings to deliver the sweet-obsessed their fix. But all that chocolate takes its toll. Milk or dark or white, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. So, after awakening from the sugar coma from under a pile of candy wrappers, try some of these savory dishes that lure chocolate out of its comfort zone.
Chocolate Chili Con Carne Even without any chocolate, chili sometimes takes on that rich red-brown hue of a dish swimming in the stuff. Make that gastro-illusion a reality with actual chocolate chili con carne. Bitter dark chocolate or even a sweeter version can enhance

Cocoa-Rubbed Baby Back Ribs Cocoa powder slides easily into any dry rub, especially a rub that includes warming spices like cinnamon, allspice and ginger. Chocolate delivers a depth counterpoint to the brightness of those spices, coating pork ribs in a flavor that only gets better the lower and slower its cooked. Add a touch of chipotle chili powder to the mix, as chocolate has a tendency to highlight the nuances of a dish with the right amount of heat. Doctors Put Their Heart Into New Initiative NYU Langone brings transplant services to Winthrop
NYU Winthrop Hospital is now offering the world-class heart transplant services of NYU Langone Health to NYU Winthrop patients on Long Island. Heart transplant services will be led by esteemed cardiothoracic surgeon Nader Moazami, MD, who joined NYU Langone earlier this year from the Cleveland Clinic. Moazami, who serves as Surgical Director of Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support at NYU Langone Health, has performed more than 300 heart transplants, adds to a highly skilled team already serving NYU Winthrop patients. Services on Long Island will include presurgical evaluations of candidates for implanted heart-assist devices and heart transplants. These new services come at an especially opportune time for NYU Winthrop, given that heart disease and stroke are among the top health concerns among Long Islanders. “We’re bringing the world-class services of NYU Langone’s heart
Cardiothoracic surgeon Nader Moazami, MD transplant program to our patients locally on Long Island, further elevating our already strong cardiology services,” said Kevin Marzo, MD, Chief of the Cardiology Division at NYU Winthrop. “Patients with advanced heart failure often have reduced

mobility, so this new collaboration vastly increases patient access. Long Islanders need look no further than their own backyard for the finest in heart care.” The NYU Langone-NYU Winthrop collaborative services will be conducted in Mineola, while the actual heart transplants or implantation of heart-assist devices, such as left ventricular heart assist devices (LVAD), will be performed at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. “We’re creating an integrated system between NYU Langone and NYU Winthrop so that a patient in need of therapies for end-stage heart failure encounters a seamless process,” added Moazami. “Already, we’re seeing an exceptionally strong spirit of collaboration in our efforts, working toward the most successful patient outcomes possible.” Helping to lead this collaborative team is also Alex Reyentovich, MD, Medical Director of the Heart Transplant and Ventricular Assist Device Program at NYU Langone Health. Reyentovich and his team of fellowship-trained heart failure specialists, have extensive experience in treating patients with advanced heart disease and LVADs. LVADs are an option for a patient whose heart can no longer pump
enough blood to meet the body’s needs. The assistive devices are used in three ways: as a bridge until a transplant donor is found; to stabilize the heart until the muscle might recover; and as a “destination therapy,” for example, a permanent solution for a person with contraindications to a heart transplant such as kidney disease or advanced age. NYU Winthrop’s Division of Cardiology is committed to providing the very best, comprehensive care for Long Island residents with cardiovascular disease. The addition of a heart transplantation program to existing specialties enables patients to receive even more comprehensive care close to home. The Hospital also receives accolades as a national leader in Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). TAVR is a revolutionary procedure that enables patients with severe aortic stenosis to receive a new heart valve without undergoing open-heart surgery. Last year, NYU Winthrop was among the top five busiest hospitals in the nation performing this minimally invasive FDA-approved procedure. County Grants Tax Grievance Extension BY STEVE MOSCO
SMOSCO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
Nassau County Executive Laura Curran recently announced she has directed officials at the Assessment Review Commission (ARC) and Department of Assessment (DOA) to accept property assessment grievance filings until Monday, April 2, in order for the county to provide additional community outreach explaining the property assessment grievance process. “Not all county property owners are familiar with the assessment grievance process and the many resources available to them to learn how to file themselves,” said Curran. “We plan to hold these workshops throughout Nassau County.” Among the ways property owners can learn the assessment system is to visit the ARC website and view an easy to understand video at www.nassaucountyny.gov/arc. Individual notices of tentative assessed value, which were mailed by DOA, are available for viewing to homeowners at www. mynassauproperty.com. While the notices show the assigned tentative assessed value for each property for the 2019-20 school and general tax years, it does not reflect the amount of property taxes that will be imposed by a school district or local taxing authority. There is no fee to file an “Application for Correction of Assessment” with Nassau County. “Homeowners need to be educated about the property assessment system,” said Curran. “Make sure you look at your tentative assessed value and then use the county’s resources to self file a grievance.” If owners have not received their assessment disclosure letter that had been mailed in January, they may call the DOA at 516-571-1500 or visit the department website at www.mynassauproperty.com.

VALENTINE’S DAY FEB 14
Five Ways To Show You Care This Valentine’s Day You may have read my previous article about buying experience-based gifts for the holidays, and with Valentine’s Day approaching, now is a great time to consider that option. But what if, rather than buying gifts, you just want new ways to express your love and devotion to your partner? Rather than going the chocolate and flowers route (although those are always nice accompaniments), below you will find five ways to show your partner that you care. These tips are helpful for keeping the passion alive in your relationship on Valentine’s Day and beyond.
Continue to date your partner
Don’t let your hectic schedule get in the way. Set aside at least one evening per week to go on a date with your partner. It can be a night out on the town or a quiet evening in. Either way, make sure to leave your work life behind, limit outside distractions, and focus on the two of you and your relationship.
LOVE LESSONS Marisa T. Cohen, PhD
Remember the importance of touch
Physical contact is important in a relationship. Don’t take your partner for granted and remember to show affection by hugging, kissing, and cuddling.
Go the extra mile to show your partner that you care
Tokens of appreciation are always a nice touch. These need not be expensive gifts, but instead serve as a signal to your partner that you are thinking of him/her and that you care. The more personal the token, the better. It could be something as
simple as a sweet note expressing your love, or as grand as surprising him/her with that new (insert wonderful present here) he/she has been eyeing.
Grow together
It’s important that you continue to grow together, and not apart. You and your partner should pursue a hobby or engage in a new activity. You may want to begin a collection, join a sports team, or even learn a new skill. Despite what you choose, it is something new that you and your partner can learn together and share.
Listen to each other
It is important not to get carried away by your own lives and stresses. You need to be there for your partner, and a big part of that is knowing when and how to be there. This involves listening. It is imperative that you know what is happening in your partner’s life and how you may be best able to support him/her.
These five suggestions are just the beginning. The more time you set aside to focus on, and bond with your partner, the more you show how much you care for him/her, and the more you will strengthen your relationship. Happy Valentine’s Day! The Five Love Languages For any relationship to thrive, both parties need to feel validated and appreciated. Here’s the thing though— we all have different ways of giving and receiving love. Once we can get to the root of how they need to feel loved, we can take the mystery out of what our loved ones want and expect from us and elevate our relationships. In Dr. Gary Chapman’s brilliant book The Five Love Languages, he shares that there are five universal ways that people express and interpret love. Chapman firmly believes that each person has one primary and one secondary love language. I encourage you to explore which of the love languages resonate and which ones your loved ones might respond to as well.
LIFE EVOLUTIONS Melody Pourmoradi
Words of Affirmation
Our words have the power to harm or to heal so why not use them effectively? If we didn’t grow up in a home where verbal communication and compliments were typical, we would have no way of knowing that a friend or partner so strongly needs this type of affirmation. Words of appreciation are powerful communicators of love. Examples include “You look lovely in that dress,” “Thank you for always being on time” and “You always know how to make me laugh.”
Quality Time
In an age where we all struggle to stay connected with loved ones because of all the outside stimulation, giving our undivided attention to
someone is invaluable. Quality time could take the form of a long walk, sitting across the table and dining together or doing another activity you both love. Remember though, that we all have the same amount of hours in a day and true quality time can fulfill so much more than hours of “unconnected” time ever could.
Receiving Gifts
Although all of the five love languages challenge us to give to our significant others, visible symbols of love speak the loudest. A gift is a physical indicator that you can look at and think “Wow this person was really thinking of me or remembered me.” In order to buy someone, a gift one must first be thinking about their significant other. It’s not about how much it cost, it’s the idea and the effort behind it that counts as an expression of love.
Acts of Service
Often times, actions do indeed speak louder than words. Acts of service refer to doing things that you know your spouse/family would like you to do. Examples such as setting the table, cooking a meal, changing the baby‘s
diaper or picking up groceries fall into this category. Each of these acts requires thought, effort and energy and when done in a kind and spirited way, they are lovely expressions of love. This is about doing things for others out of the simple goodness of your heart.
Physical Touch
A person whose primary love language is physical touch absolutely loves to give and receive hugs and other physical forms of affection. For recognition and appreciation, they may require hand-holding, a gentle pat on the back or to touch your arm while communicating. Appropriate touch will communicate feelings of safety, warmth, and love for someone who falls into this category. These five love languages are important in all relationships, not just romantic ones. They will open the doors for communication and deeper emotional connections. Melody Pourmoradi is a women’s life and wellness coach at Life Evolutions Coaching. Living With Heart Failure Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States? That’s why February has been deemed Heart Health Month, providing an opportunity for us to spread awareness about strategies to prevent and manage heart disease. Making heart-healthy choices and booking regular check-ups with your physician can help save you from this silent killer. Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a condition in which the heart’s function as a pump is inadequate to meet the body’s needs. Diagnosis of CHF is made on a careful examination from your doctor. Diet and lifestyle modifications are a very important part of the CHF treatment plan. These healthy eating strategies are even useful for those looking to avoid heart disease and improve their overall cardiac health.

with salt, make sure that salt is one of the last ingredients on the list because ingredients are listed in order of quantity.
Cutting down on sodium is one of the most important parts of heart failure nutrition therapy. Sodium is found in large amounts in processed and prepared foods. If you are eating three meals per day, limit your sodium intake to 500 milligrams per meal and try to snack on low-sodium items throughout the day. Aim for no more than 1,500-2,000 milligrams of sodium per day.
Experiment With Salt-Free Seasonings Get that salt-shaker off of the dinner table and opt for some salt-free/low-sodium seasoning options. Initiating the conversation with an elderly loved one can feel daunting and is why Right at Home, a global leader in in-home care and assistance, has developed RightConversationsSM for effective communication between you and your aging family members. A practical approach in the family caregiving process, RightConversations offers tips and tools for discussing your relative’s preferences and possibilities for extra assistance to continue a lifestyle they enjoy. “At Right at Home, we understand the challenge of talking through health, finances and other personal issues with aging loved ones,” said Gregg Balbera, president of Right at Home Nassau Suffolk. “RightConversations helps families be proactive in what to discuss with seniors and how to phrase questions. RightConversations is a complimentary resource that reduces family caregiver stress and builds rapport between elders and their concerned family members.” Balbera summarizes the 10 tips listed in the RightConversations guide, which will help foster strong family dynamics to ensure the safety and comfort of older relatives:
1
Gather accurate, relevant information to help you assess signs of your senior’s changing needs. Note if your senior can no longer perform certain tasks. Accompany your elder to doctor appointments to get a firsthand report.
Initiating The Conversation With Seniors

ou hesitate to talk with your aging loved ones about their care needs and future plans, but they are showing signs of needing more help. Mom keeps forgetting to take her medications. Dad is unsteady on his feet. How much longer can they live safely on their own? How do you and the rest of the family start a positive dialogue with your parents about home care?
2
Determine the level of concern warranted by observing signs that your loved one needs additional support. Are bills being paid? What about spoiled food in the home? Consider using the RightConversations Family Action Planner, which tracks delegated tasks for family members and service providers. Review the facts and avoid personal biases so your loved one does not feel judged or pressured into what you want. Limit your assumptions about your senior’s well-being and stick to factual observations.

Involve siblings from the beginning in conversations with your older parent or relative. This may mean putting aside personal challenges with a brother or sister to seek the interests of your parent. Plan the conversation to keep your thoughts organized. Practicing key points and open-ended questions for your time together will cultivate trust and productive conversation. Create a positive conversation by listening with intent to understand rather than to respond. The goal is not to give advice but to express love and

concern for your aging loved one. Be aware of differences in communication styles among siblings and other family members. Understand why your loved one may withhold information or resist sharing emotional vulnerability. While you are focused on protecting your parent’s home environment, they may be afraid of losing their independence or being abandoned in a care facility. Do not make your loved one feel ambushed by a “you” versus “us” approach. Take time to acknowledge each other’s perspectives and focus on partnering rather than acting in opposition. Be prepared for what to do if your loved one says “no” to suggestions for personal assistance and home care. Take a step back and give your senior time to think through your words and concerns and offer positive language. While it can be disconcerting to see older loved ones show signs of needing more assistance with daily activities, many seniors are actually relieved their families notice and care. Exploring caregiving concerns and options together makes for shared decision making and meaningful relationships well beyond the initial conversation. —Submitted by Right At Home

wo months into the new year, many of us are trying to keep those resolutions to eat healthier and exercise more. It’s also imperative to include mental health in that round up. You’ll love this list of books that not only provide helpful tips to better your nutrition and overall physical appearance, they will get your brain working into a fascinating read about science and health. Dirty Genes: A Breakthrough Program to Treat the Root Cause of Illness and Optimize Your Health (2018) By Ben Lynch, N.D. Sometimes, you really can blame your health on genetics. Dr. Ben Lynch suffered for years from unexplainable health issues until he discovered the root of his problems: “dirty” genes. He determined that genes can be “born dirty or merely
act dirty,” in response to your diet, lifestyle or environment, leading to lifelong, sometimes life threatening health problems such as cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disorders, depression, obesity, cancer and diabetes. The book is based on Lynch’s own experience, helping thousands of clients to identify and optimize both types of dirty genes by cleaning them up with healthy eating, good sleep, stress relief and other natural means. A good book for those who have tried
every method of weight loss and want a deeper understanding of their bodies. Available for $15 on Amazon.
The Haywire Heart (2017) By Christopher J. Case, Dr. John Mandrola and Lennard Zinn The first book to examine heart conditions in athletes, the authors discuss how, in fact, too much
exercise can kill you. A read for anyone who competes in endurance sports (cycling, triathlon, running races and cross-country skiing), The Haywire Heart presents the evidence that going too hard or too long can damage your heart forever. The book details what to look out for and how to protect your heart so you can enjoy your sport for years to come. From warning signs and symptoms to risks and recovery, all is detailed within this extensive research by leading cardiac electrophysiologist and masters athlete Dr. John Mandrola, who explains why many doctors misdiagnose heart conditions in athletes. Hospice and Palliative Care
What to know about alleviating pain and improving quality of life
S
aying goodbye to a loved one is never easy. It is in those final months and weeks of a person’s life where family members want to make them as comfortable as possible, knowing that when they are no longer suffering from the pain of an illness, they are finally at peace. Part of hospice services include palliative care, the medical specialty of alleviating pain and improving the quality of life of the seriously ill. According to Right at Home, which provides home care, senior care and home health care services, hospice care begins after health treatment for an illness has stopped and the patient is considered terminal. Palliative care can begin as soon as a patient is diagnosed with a serious illness and can continue while the individual pursues a cure. Statistics show that hospice providers alone care for more than 1.6 million Americans and their families annually. While hospice does involve caring for the terminally ill, hospice care is more than seeing someone through their final days. An integrated team of healthcare professionals and
trained volunteers work together to manage pain, control symptoms, and bolster emotional and spiritual needs. Hospice teams ensure patients and their loved ones find support, respect and dignity along the difficult path of a life-limiting illness. Interdisciplinary palliative care teams are typically comprised of doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and physical and occupational therapists who assist with the pain of cancer, kidney failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, congestive heart failure and other chronic diseases or disorders. As for cost, most Medicaid, Medicare and private health insurance plans cover palliative and hospice services. Hospice care covered by Medicare requires that a person receive a prognosis of living six months or less, but there is not a six-month limit on hospice care services. A patient with a doctor’s certification of terminal illness may receive hospice support for as long as necessary. At the Parker Jewish Institute, a hospice and palliative care seminar was recently held for health care professionals called “Hospice into the
Future.” The informative seminar for hospital and skilled nursing facility staff, health care service providers and clinical professionals, focused on the current state of hospice and palliative care. The seminar was given by Carla Braveman, BSN, RN, M.Ed, CHCE, president and CEO of Hospice and Palliative Care Association of New York State (HPCANYS), who gave a brief history of hospice care, noting that the modern hospice movement began in England in 1967 by founder Dame Cecile Saunders, a nurse who became a social worker and then a physician. Also discussed were the latest issues of concern to HPCANYS. What is the future role of hospice with the new payment model? How will palliative care evolve? “People in Washington, D.C. are now actually talking about a Palliative Care Benefit,” said Braveman. “A Palliative Care Benefit is not a Palliative Care doctor seeing patients, it is a hospice-like situation where the patient doesn’t have six months or less to live, but is based on a longer trajectory of an illness and whether they want curative treatment or comfort care.”
The Community/ Inpatient Hospice at Parker provides comfort, relief, and peace of mind to individuals with advanced or life-limiting illness and their families. Parker’s is an intimate and unique program that provides personalized care to ensure a patient’s comfort, enhance quality of life, preserve one’s dignity and respect individual choices. Not All Jaundice Comes From The Liver Pancreatic cancer is one of the most common gastrointestinal cancers, one of the most difficult to diagnose at an early stage, and is generally associated with a poor long time prognosis. There are no screening tests for pancreatic cancer and most people find out they have this disease when they develop what is termed “painless jaundice.” Other common symptoms include vague abdominal pain, back pain, fatigue and weight loss. Most people with this condition, however, have no symptoms until jaundice develops. When someone first comes to medical attention with painless jaundice, the working diagnosis should be pancreatic cancer until proven otherwise. Making the diagnosis is simple and requires a CT scan or MRI of the abdomen. Most people with pancreatic cancer are found at initial diagnosis to have end stage, inoperable disease. Why is pancreatic cancer so difficult to diagnosis at an

’’
early stage? The pancreas is a medium sized organ that is situated deep in the middle of the abdomen. It consists of three parts: the head, body and tail. Most pancreatic cancers are located in the head, a structure that the bile ducts, which drain the liver and gallbladder, run through. When the tumor becomes large enough to obstruct the bile ducts, jaundice occurs. By this time, most tumors have already spread into adjacent structures such as the lymph nodes or the blood vessels. When this happens, surgery will not help as the disease has already spread beyond the pancreas. When cancer arises in the body or tail of the pancreas, there is no jaundice to alert anyone that a cancer is present so this type of cancer almost universally comes to medical attention at a very late stage in the disease and these cancers have an even worse prognosis than those found in the pancreatic head. There are no blood tests to screen
for pancreatic cancer and routine screening with either ultrasound or CT scan is not recommended, as routine imaging has not been shown to be cost-effective. This is a huge dilemma as the incidence of pancreatic cancer appears to be rising. Pancreatic cancer is diagnosed in about 37,000 Americans each year while an estimated 34,000 Americans die each year of this disease. Only two out of 10 people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer will live more than one year after diagnosis and less than four percent of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer will be alive five years after the diagnosis is made. Risk factors for pancreatic cancer include smoking, male sex, age over 60, diabetes, diets high in red meat and low in fruits and vegetables, being overweight, being AfricanAmerican, having H. Pylori infection and having a family history of pancreatic cancer. The only curative treatment
for pancreatic cancer is surgery although people who are eligible for a curative operation are few and far between. Aside from curative surgery, patients with pancreatic cancer can be treated with palliative surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or endoscopic stenting. The good news is that chemotherapies are getting better and new immunotherapies are prolonging life with fewer side effects than older treatments. Much research is needed to develop better diagnostic tools to diagnose pancreatic cancers earlier and to develop more effective therapies. There is no way to prevent pancreatic cancer but some people have speculated that watching one’s diet, eliminating smoking and avoiding second hand smoke, and exercising may help reduce the risk of acquiring this disease. There can be no harm in trying to reduce one’s potential risk factors for this deadly disease.

Central Island Healthcare Launches LGBT Program
LGBT elders represent a generation that lived through years of fear, self-hatred, identity confusion, loneliness, isolation and shame. Social prejudice and institutional discrimination have resulted in LGBT people’s fear of being identified. To the extent that invisibility continues today, it remains a barrier to assessing LGBT older adult needs and providing proper support and services. Studies have shown that 45 percent of LGBT older adults live alone, and are therefore at greater risk of disability, poor health and mental distress. More than half of the participants feel that they lack companionship, feel isolated from others or feel left out. Services and Advocacy for LGBT Elders (SAGE), the nation’s largest social service and advocacy group for this population, reports one study suggesting that LGBT seniors may be as much as five times less likely to access needed healthcare and social services. A 2001 study by Funders for Lesbian and Gay issues found that 75 percent of LGBT seniors interviewed reported not being open about their sexual orientation to healthcare workers.

Offering an elite level of short term rehabilitation and skilled nursing care since 1969, Central Island Healthcare in Plainview realized that the LGBT community is extremely underserved when looking for an in-patient healthcare experience. Whether seeking short term in-patient physical rehabilitation or long term skilled nursing care, all LGBT guests will benefit from what the LGBT program has to offer. Working in close concert with the LGBT Network and SAGE Long Island, Central Island Healthcare has developed a comprehensive program to address the needs of the LGBT community in an in-patient healthcare facility. The intent of this program
’’
is for all our guests to enjoy a loving environment. Where each guest can be proud of who they are, and never feel ashamed or afraid of revealing such. In addition to a standard high level of programming, the LGBT program will have additional social programming specifically designed to encourage socialization among our LGBT guests; to avoid isolation; and to share individual experiences and challenges along the way together. SAGE-LI has invited the guests of the LGBT program to their weekly Mingle Series at their Woodbury location, which is an excellent opportunity for LGBT older adults to meet in a relaxed environment. SAGE-LI has a Friendly
Visitor Program designed to reduce isolation and increase socialization for LGBT adults who are staying at Central Island and unable to attend the SAGE services at their community centers. LGBT guests will be invited to join Central Island Healthcare LGBT Planning Council, where LGBT guests will have the opportunity to discuss and have input in the program planning, and advise Management regarding the ongoing development of the program to ensure that it addresses everyone’s particular needs. Once any guest is ready to return home after a short-term stay, social workers and discharge planners will work with SAGE-LI to set up each guest with all the available community based LGBT programs and services to ensure continued success and improvement once returning home. For more information, call the admissions department at 516-4330600 ext. 230 to schedule a tour of the newly renovated facility or to answer any questions or concerns. —Submitted by Central Island Healthcare

Family & Children’s Association (FCA), a leading health and human services nonprofit organization on Long Island, recently awarded Anton Media Group publisher Angela Susan Anton as 2018’s first Hero of the Month. The award is presented to FCA supporters that go above and beyond to either help raise awareness of FCA’s work across Long Island, raise funds to benefit FCA’s mission or both. “I am honored to be recognized by FCA. Anton Media Group has worked with FCA for many years and their work with Long Island’s most vulnerable families is crucial to sustaining healthy communities,” said Anton. Anton Media welcomed FCA staff into their Mineola offices in early
2017 to further their collaboration and discuss how to effectively share news of the vital work FCA is doing each and every day to support Long Island’s most vulnerable families and communities. The relationship has led to an increase of FCA’s presence across the Anton Media platforms, highlighting FCA’s client success stories ranging from FCA’s Friendly Visiting senior program to FCA’s transitional and independent living program for previously homeless youth. Additionally, Anton Media has been highlighting existing opportunities for Long Islanders to do good for their communities while supplementing the more commonplace status reporting of Long Island’s social justice and public health issues.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). As much as you’d like to relax and feel comfortable, you’ve had enough of that. There is a point in which relaxation becomes sleep. You don’t want to spend your waking hours metaphorically sleepwalking. So here it comes -- the leap into uncertainty. It’s a jolt -waking up usually is. It’s a jolt into vitality that’s worth it.
Solution: 32 Letters
© 2018 Australian Word Games Dist. by Creators Syndicate Inc.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Though nothing in life is totally certain, some situations feel safer than others. However, is spending time in a safe situation right for you? Is it in line with your goals? And what about the deeper meaning and purpose you crave? Your evolution won’t feel as safe, but you have the guts to tolerate uncertainty. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Some of the best ideas have humble beginnings, and some of the worst ideas are born of overblown ambitions. As Walt Disney often suggested to his creative crew, “I only hope that we don’t lose sight of one thing -- that it was all started by a mouse.” This week will bring you such a “mouse” of an idea. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Here you go putting even more time and love into a person or project that will not pay you back anytime soon. The endeavor will make you internally healthy, fit and strong. It is the spiritual equivalent to a challenging fitness program. You’ve the fortitude to endure, to press on and most importantly to be consistent.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). It will feel as though the action you take to fill your needs is in perfect step with the dance of life. As it is for most dances, once you get the basic moves down, it’s easy and natural to add your own style and flourish. That’s when things really go to the next level. This week will be more fun than you’ve had in a long while. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). The experts suggest that people who are trying to sell a house should make the walls a neutral color, take down family pictures and create a more generic experience so that people can project their own tastes onto the place. You’ll find success doing the exact opposite of this in every aspect of your life this week. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Hardly anything happens for just one reason. Life is a cumulative effect of millions and billions of occurrences and choices. Be aware of the indirect causes and environmental factors that contribute to a circumstance, many of which can be changed or influenced. Focus there. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Welcome criticism. It means you’re doing something people notice. It means you’re making them want to interact with what you’re putting out into the world. Invite comment. If the criticism is wrong, you will one day make them eat their words. If the criticism is right, you will learn and become mighty. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). The hero or villain of a good story is often someone unsuspected -- a seemingly harmless character, maybe low-status and low-key, with deficiencies that make him or her an unlikely savior or threat. Use this concept. If people underestimate you, use it to your advantage. They won’t see you coming. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Your practical, realistic side is at odds with your natural optimism. You believe the best will happen and you want to bet on it, but that’s a pretty sizable risk. This is a “go big or go home” situation. Success will depend on getting behind the idea with enough confidence, passion and conviction to be contagious. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). You’re above the petty squabbles, but they will still need you to weigh in. If you don’t, these minor grievances could turn into a major division of the group. At the very least, the conflict will go on for much longer than necessary. You’ll be a calm and fair leader. The tone you set will catch on.
THIS WEEK’S BIRTHDAYS
This solar return brings you recognition, though not in a showy way that will make you uncomfortable. You’ll be seen for your strengths, appreciated for your contributions, favorably reviewed for the way you apply your talents and handsomely paid. March and April boost business. May brings love in many forms. You’ll be exhilarated by what you learn and see in June. You family will grow, too, which comes with new challenges and responsibilities for you. There’s a windfall in October. COPYRIGHT 2018 CREATORS.COM

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Remember the time when some random acquaintance suddenly proved to be of great value to you? CHOCOLATE from page 4A Mole Poblano Probably one of the originators of chocolate’s savory application, mole sauce dates back to at least the early colonial period, when convent nuns in Puebla, Mexico, first prepared the sauce with turkey for a visiting archbishop (thanks, Wikipedia). There are no shortcuts to a true mole poblano, which can contain up to 20 ingredients, including multiple varieties of chili peppers, cloves, raisins and, of course, Mexican chocolate. natural acidity of tomatoes for a more well-rounded flavor. For more of that chocolate-enhanced heat, try a spicier version with a fiery diablo sauce. Recipe: www.gimmesomeoven.com/ pasta-with-dark-chocolate-marinarasauce/
White Chocolate Baba Ghanoush This Middle Eastern dish, perfect for appetizer dipping or in-between meal snacks, gets an exotic jolt from the addition of white chocolate, the forgotten and much-maligned member of the cocoa product family. The flavors and textures of baba ghanoush are made somehow smoother with the addition of chocolate, and the sweetness doesn’t overpower, but instead brings a surprising element to an already dynamic dip.
