DINING

Le Pain Quotidien BY LYN DOBRIN

from a local flea market. This is the first Le Pain Quotient on Long Island (there are 238 restaurants in 18 countries) and it is tucked away next to Neiman Marcus. If you enter from the mall, you are greeted by an array of beautiful rustic breads and pastries, which are for sale to take home. The organic bread is baked fresh every day in their Long Island City bakery and delivered in the early morning. There are five varieties: whole-wheat sourdough, Mac ‘n’ cheese baguette, with salad hazelnut flute, five grain and super seed gluten-free. Many of the bakers here have been with the restaurant since Coumont opened his first shop on Madison Avenue in 1997. Additionally, they have two in-house bakeries in New York

EDITORIAL@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

Whenever I see a long communal table at a restaurant, I want to call up the family and say come on, let’s have a meal together, which is exactly what I did after my first visit to Le Pain Quotidien, the new café at Roosevelt Field. The café’s long table made of recycled wood, comfortably seats 18 and stretches halfway across the restaurant. A communal table has been integral to the LPQ chain since its roots as a bakery in Brussels in 1990. Chef Alain Coumont named his shop Le Pain Quotidien—French for “the daily bread”—first offering fine quality breads and then expanding to open faced sandwiches (tartines) and salads. The table was salvaged

City—one at their Bleecker Street restaurant and the other at the Financial District flagship where they offer baking classes and events. The open-faced sandwiches featuring fish, ham, poultry, are served on organic whole-wheat sourdough, with a gluten-free option available. I chose the pole-caught tuna salad with wild caper aioli and prosciutto, pear and fig with ricotta, honey and arugula. For vegetarians, there are two tartines: hummus with vegetables, walnut, golden raisins and harissa and, one of their most popular dishes, avocado toast with organic

chia seeds and citrus cumin salt. Two big hits were mac and cheese made with Asiago and Gruyere cheeses and Tunisian chicken stew, a slow cooked chicken, with capers and olive stew served with quinoa and almond pilaf. For me, the highpoint of the meal came with dessert. Breakfast is available all day long and I had noticed “Warm Belgian Waffle with organic jam and fresh cream with fresh berries,” so I ordered it for dessert. I was transported back to the 1964 World’s Fair in New York when America and I were introduced to Belgian waffles.

THEATER REVIEW

CHRISTY HINKO

Linda Lavin Is Brilliant In ‘Our Mother’s Brief Affair’

BY CHRISTY HINKO

CHINKO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

On the verge of death, a far too often occurrence, Anna (Linda Lavin) makes a shocking confession to her adult children, Seth (Greg Keller) and Abby (Kate Arrington). Anna’s children are jolted by the revelation and the details. Who decides what’s really true? Is Anna’s affair with her lover (John Procaccino/Philip Hoffman) imagined or reality? For Anna, what is more important than the truth is her legacy. Tony and two-time Golden Globe Award winner Linda Lavin’s wit and charm shine through in her portrayal of Anna, a mother of adult twins from

Merrick, Long Island. The audience chuckles with familiarity and delight in the real-world events surrounding Anna’s affair and her tongue-in-cheek relationship with her children. Anna’s children arrive at a pivotal point in their adult lives when they realize that their mother is human and makes mistakes, and has an identity outside of just being a mother. Younger theater-goers will most likely relate to the adult children in the relationship, while older show-goers will relate to Anna and understand more of the historical references, particularly more of the 1940-50s coming-ofage realities. Lavin won a Tony Award, as well as Drama Desk, Outer Linda Lavin Critics and Helen

Hayes awards for her performance in Broadway Bound in 1987. She is a six-time Tony nominee for her roles in The Last of the Red Hot Lovers, The Diary of Anne Frank, The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife, Collected Stories and The Lyons. She is a two-time Golden Globe winner for her role as the title role on Alice, the nine-year hit television series, and she recently co-starred with Sean Hayes in the series Sean Saves the World. Keller’s theater credits include Wit, Of Good Stock and The Who and The What. He has also appeared in television shows like Orange Is The New Black, The Good Wife, Lipstick Jungle and Law & Order. Arrington’s theater credits include Grace, The American Plan and The Qualms. Upcoming she will be playing Maria Saldana in the new Showtime series Billions. Procaccino’s credits include Broadway performances of A Time

NOW OPEN

Kate Arrington and Greg Keller To Kill, An Enemy of the People, An American Daughter and A Thousand Clowns. He has also appeared on episodes of The Good Wife, Law & Order, NYPD Blue and Smash. The two-hour production, limited engagement of Our Mother’s Brief Affair was written by Tony Award winner Richard Greenberg and is directed by Manhattan Theatre Club’s award-winning artistic director Lynne Meadow. Tickets for Our Mother’s Brief Affair are available by calling Telecharge at 212-239-6200, online by visiting www.telecharge.com, or by visiting Samuel J. Friedman Theatre box office (261 West 47th St.). The show runs through Sunday, March 6. Ticket prices range from $60 to $140.

Some Of Bettye LaVette’s Favorite Covers DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

Music fans lucky enough to be at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts last week got to experience the creative force of nature that is Bettye LaVette. Over a career that spans well over five decades. LaVette has fashioned herself into quite the song interpreter. Always one to completely rip a song down to its bones and come back with an arrangement that makes it completely her own (YouTube her performance of The Who’s “Love, Reign o’er Me” at the 2008 Kennedy Center Honors if you need more proof), LaVette’s recent string of records in what she calls her fifth career find her cherry-picking quite the eclectic array of canons. Along with the usual suspects like Lennon/McCartney, Dylan and Jagger/ Richards, she’s also put her stamp on songs by Lucinda Williams, Fiona Apple, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Elton John and John Hiatt. Here is a trio of songs that she’s covered that really resonate for her and why. “Choices” (Billy Yates/ Mike Curtis) from 2007’s The Scene of the Crime “George Jones was also being honored the year The Who were at the 2008

Kennedy Center Honors. I had done ‘Choices’ and we had gotten a Grammy nomination for that CD. So my husband got in touch with him to find out if there was a possibility that I could come and sing ‘Choices’ for George Jones. They said that virtually everyone in Nashville was coming, so there wouldn’t be any room for me. That said, I love ‘Choices’ because that tells my story.”

“The response to this exhibit, from the time the call to artists went out, was tremendous,” said Susan Herbst, associate executive director of The Art Guild. “We had over 135 entries that the photography committee, Dave Wollin and Barbara Spivak, narrowed down to 56 photographs by 50 artists, including 13 high school students. The juror-ofawards, Harold Naideau, was impressed with the quality of the work and said that it made choosing the winners very difficult.” Many art enthusiasts turned out for the reception on Sunday. The Art Guild copresidents Ilene Silberstein and Shelley Holtzman and photo exhibit committee members Dave Wollin and Barbara Spivak, were pleased with the large turnout. “This was, by far, one of our best attended receptions ever and The Art Guild would like to thank everyone who took the time to come out on a busy Super Bowl Sunday,” said Herbst. “Thank you also to our Photography Committee, Mr. Naideau, and to all the volunteers who help put a show like this together.” The exhibit is displayed throughout the

Least Graceful Coaching Exits:

NY Knicks Edition BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO

DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

With Derek Fisher being shown the door as New York Knicks head coach and fellow Laker Kurt Rambis taking over as interim coach, all the buzz is about who Phil Jackson will bring in to right the ship (Tom Thibodeau anyone?). In the meantime, let’s take a look at some of the head coaches who’ve led the Knickerbockers and wound up leaving the organization in a less-than-graceful manner. Larry Brown (2005-06) Local boy by way of Long Beach who’s become an NBA and college basketball coaching legend comes back to coach hometown squad and winds up being a dream come true? Not quite, as Brown’s tenure lasted a season that was marred by his being set up to fail by then-general manager Isiah Thomas resulting in a 23-59 record. And that doesn’t even include the public feuding Brown did in the media with Coney Island’s own star point guard Stephon Marbury, who wound up getting labeled by local beat writers as “...the most reviled athlete in New York.”

Week 6 (2-17) - GC News Whats Hap:Layout

Lenny Wilkens (2004-05) You would think that one of the 1 2/12/16 3:02 PM Page 1 Top 10 coaches in NBA history

would be able to make a long and lasting impact for the New York Knicks, right? You’d be wrong as even a Hall of Famer like Wilkens could not withstand the combined forces of Thomas and Marbury. After being hired in January 2004, he and the Knicks rode out the rest of the season to a 23-19 record, which was good enough to get the team into the post-season as a seventh seed. Following an opening round sweep by the New Jersey Nets, Wilkens returned to start the following season 17-22, before resigning and never coaching again. Don Nelson (1995-1996) Another one of the Top 10 coaches in NBA history who helmed the New York Knicks, Nelson won five championships as a player for the Boston Celtics and was a three-time coach of the year. Having succeeded Pat Riley, Nelson’s New York stint lasted from July 1995 to March 1996, during which time his wheeling-and-dealing proclivities found him proposing to team management that they trade franchise cornerstone Patrick Ewing and make a run at upcoming free agent Shaquille O’Neal. Coupled with an up-tempo style of offense that contrasted with

Riley’s hard-nosed defensive approach, Nelson compiled a 34-25 record and wound up getting fired, only to have Jeff Van Gundy wind up getting promoted to interim coach. Hubie Brown (1982-1986) Brown’s five-year stint heading up the Atlanta Hawks landed him a Coach of the Year Award and a job leading the Knicks. While he compiled an overall record of 138-190, Brown made the playoffs his first two seasons before a March 1985 knee injury to stud forward Bernard King (which belabored him for two seasons), and a 32game stint on the disabled list for top draft pick Patrick Ewing, found Brown being shown the door in 1986 after starting out 4-12. Willis Reed (1977-1978) While it’s all well and good that Willis Reed was on the only two Knicks teams to win championships, his success as a player did not translate to his leading the team as its head coach. In succeeding Hall of Fame Coach Red Holzman, Reed wound up with an overall record of 49-47. He left the team 14 games into the 1978 season and wound up being succeeded by Holzman.
