Music To His Ears A composer’s harmonious beginnings BY JENNIFER FAUCI
JFAUCI@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
Carter Burwell never planned on a life of music. The American composer and New York City native enrolled in Harvard College to study animation, while taking classes in electronic music and architecture with a plan to attend architecture school. But when a love of piano followed him to college, Burwell decided to take a year off and play music, thus beginning his prestigious music career. “I started playing piano in high school therapeutically. Just playing by myself and improving throughout college. I tried to make sure I had a piano in my room,” said Burwell of his draw to music. “I played music in New York City as an avocation, really.” As for his success in Hollywood, Burwell deems it all an accident when a sound editor who recognized his music from the New York club scene suggested he meet renowned filmmakers Ethan and Joel Coen. “The Coen brothers asked me if I would
be interested in writing for their movies and I’m always up for something new. Then other people started calling me and then I had a career,” said Burwell. Before he would know of his love for music, Burwell’s earliest memory is none other than that of a guitar. “I remember being so little that I probably couldn’t walk and my mom was playing the acoustic guitar,” he said. “I don’t remember her playing the guitar, but the guitar itself…the velvet on the case, the steel wound string, the wood, I found all the materials fascinat(Photo ing. It’s just a beautiful by Tycho object. ” Burwell) Currently nominated for best score for the romance drama Carol, Burwell, to no surprise does not have a favorite score of his own. He does, however, have a soft spot for a very memorable few. “I don’t have favorite scores, it changes all the time,” said Burwell, who grew up with the music of the James Bond movies. “The good the bad and the ugly, once anyone hears it they never forget it.” For more on Carter Burwell, see page 8A.
Carter Burwell’s Favorite Scores
Psycho (1960) “It’s very perverse and the movie is perverse. They invented the genre of the horror film when they made that movie,” said Burwell of the slasher thriller. “It’s an all-string score, which you think would be more appropriate to a romance but in a way, Psycho is a romance, but it’s also beautiful.” Forbidden Planet (1956) “The sci-fi film Forbidden Planet has a great score…it’s all electronic and it was done before you could buy electronic instruments,” he said. “Composers built their own instruments. It’s amazing that a movie studio would be that adventurous.”
The Hateful Eight (2015) “When I was starting out, the music Ennio Morricone had done I thought was very inspiring. If you put together a few instruments you can compose a very striking piece of music,” said Burwell. “His ability to make a rich score out of a small number of things is fascinating.” Morricone is also nominated in the same category as Burwell for best original score for The Hateful Eight.

Then Zieran noticed corkscrews from all over the world in Hoenig’s kitchen and that’s when she came up with “Taming of the Corkscrew.” “Something wasn’t right about it, so I said ‘it’s turn of the corkscrew,’ and that made more sense,” said Hoenig of the name. “Some people get it. We weren’t inspired by the actual story because it is a very dark, depressing book, but our gift cards were,” added Hoenig of the cards, which feature a paragraph from the book about an old house and fireplace in the background, which suits the store as it is actually in an old house with a beautiful fireplace in the main room. The bookstore features several rooms filled with shelves of books,

When asked about their favorite books, the owners called upon the classics of great literature. “My favorite book is so typical, it’s To Kill A Mockingbird,” said Hoenig, who is also a publishing consultant and writer herself. “I always feel like it’s so trite, but I just go back to it.” As for Zieran, the top two in her heart are Jane Eyre and The Lord of the Rings. “We’re trying to curate our inventory right now, and we’re listening to what our customers want,” she said. “We do a lot of special orders and we keep a list of books that we know we must have.” “It’s better than what we imagined because of the reactions we see from people,” said Hoenig. “We never thought we would find an old house to have our bookstore in.” Turn of the Corkscrew Books & Wine is located at 110 N. Indian Qulture
Often an amalgam of various regional approaches to the cuisine, Indian food tends to mirror the vision of the restaurateur who conceives it. At Kurry Qulture in Astoria, Queens, that vision has produced a succulent treasure of seasonal flavors, authentic recipes, inspired preparations and exceptional service. To conceive the menu, friendly and engaging owner Sonny Solomon recruited celebrated chef Hemant Mathur—the first Indian chef in the U.S. to receive a Michelin star—while enlisting refined Indian chef Ravi Bisht to handle menu execution. The menu spans from the traditional to the adventurous, cooked with fresh Indian and local ingredients that come together like works of art, presented in a modern setting that feels upscale, yet curiously comfortable.
“
Kurry Qulture presents its menu as a multi-course prix fixe, which includes soup, two courses and dessert. A seasonal restaurant, Kurry Qulture is serving its hearty winter menu through the end of March, when it will switch to lighter, spring fare. And on a cold winter night, few offerings are more appreciated than a cup of roasted pumpkin soup—dynamically flavored and robust, without a hint of that thin, pumpkin-spiced flavor we are all too familiar with. For the first course, eaters would be wise to try the Manchurian Cauliflower—crisp, coated florets tossed in a chili tomato glaze, this dish might be the most surprising bite of the year. Other first-course standouts include the Shrimp Chettinad, with

The Phool, a deeply flavored curry, is made with lotus puffs, ricotta cheese and green peas, perfectly paired with a side of naan. The lotus puffs provide an

unmatched texture, pillowy and semi-crunchy all at once. Another hearty event on the second course menu is the Rogan Josh with lamb shank, Kashmiri chili ginger and garlic. The intensely tender lamb is served in a rich, delectable sauce. Lamb also shines in the form of chops, which are Tandoorigrilled with mace, cardamom and apple chutney. For a sweet end to the meal, the server presents a trio of desserts that is tasty and just sweet enough. Kurry Qulture makes itself a Queens dining destination with its stunning setting and contemporary decor—it makes itself a food destination with its inspired approach to a time-honored cuisine. Kurry Qulture is located at 36-05 30th Ave. in Astoria, Queens, and is open seven days a week from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. for dinner and until midnight at the bar.

As the New York Mets shake off last year’s World Series defeat and gear up for the 2016 season, actor/ comedian and die-hard Mets fan Jim Breuer believes the orange and blue faithful should anticipate years of competitive baseball—and they shouldn’t be shy about it.
“This team is the real deal. That dream everyone was talking about with the young pitchers, it’s real,” said Breuer, who recently wrapped up a two-night stay at The Paramount in Huntington. “I didn’t walk away last year sad or disappointed that they lost, my thought was, ‘wow, we are in it for the next four or five years.’” Breuer shared the pain of losing the World Series with the rest of the Mets fan base through game recap videos he began posting on Facebook after an opening day win over the Washington Nationals. From that emblematic victory through the heart-breaking loss to the Kansas City Royals in Game 5 of the World Series, Mets fans connected with Breuer’s enthusiasm, criticism and post-game intensity. “Being a Mets fan means having endurance and faith. It means loyalty—because being a Mets fan, you are not bound to win all the time, just like in life,” he said. “We stick to it through thick and thin. I see a Mets fan and I see a person who knows how to endure pain and work through it without giving up.” And it was that brand of fandom that inspired Breuer to record his game-by-game reactions in the first place. In 2014, Breuer’s father passed away. Then six months later, his sister died. Two months following that, his wife was diagnosed with cancer for the second time—she was enduring chemotherapy when Opening Day 2015 rolled around. In the game, Bartolo Colon out dueled Washington ace Max Scherzer to jump start the Mets’ season. “She was watching the first game of the season with me and of course she had no energy because of the treatment,” he said. “She’s smiling and laughing at me and I’m like, ‘what’s so funny?’ She tells me, ‘this is what you should be making videos of—as the die-hard Mets fan you are.’ Nobody shows this kind of passion—don’t be hokey, just be yourself.’” After reviewing the sum total of the 2015 season, Breuer believes this team belongs with the league’s elite. “Take the pain of losing the series, watch them get their rings and raise the banner on opening day, feel the fire in your belly and know that we are out for blood this year,” he said. “It is World Series or bust.”
Breuer breaks down the keys to a return trip to the series for the Mets:
Here’s The Pitch...
“The pitching staff has to stay healthy. Be mean and be out for blood. If this staff comes out with swagger, they can shut down any team. They fear nobody. The Cubs were supposed to be this powerhouse hitting team—they looked goofy against our pitchers. This staff has so much confidence and if they keep it together and stay healthy, who knows, maybe we’ll have a no hitter or two this year.”
A Full Year of Yoenis
“If Cespedes is half the player he was when we got him last year, look out. When he is on, he dominates at the plate. He crushes it.”
Young And Hungry
“We don’t even know what we have in [Michael] Conforto yet. He looked great at times in the playoffs. We need him to be what we think he can be—that means 20 home runs and 85 RBI.”
Infield Upgrades
“The infield defense cost this team a lot of games last year. I don’t think people realize the impact it had on this team. The defense this year has the potential to add 20-30 pitches a game to the starters. That’s huge. And I have a funny feeling about [Neil] Walker. He could surprise a lot of people. I think we’re gonna love this kid like we loved [Wally] Backman back in the day.”
We Are Familia
“The best thing to happen to this team was [Jenrry] Mejia’s suspension. It gave us [Jeurys] Familia. He went out there with the bases loaded [in World Series Game 4] and threw a double-play ball that Murphy lost. And the next day, it happened again. He gave us everything we needed or wanted.”
