Long Islander’s ‘Short’ Oscar Trip

BY CHRISTINA CLAUS

W

hen Port Washington native Max Porter and his wife Ru Kuwahata became inspired by a 150-word poem by Ron Koertge three years ago, they decided to create a short five-minute film to bring the poem to life using handmade stop-motion puppet animation. The film, Negative Space, was nominated for an Academy Award in the animated short film category after having won 54 major awards and being played in more than 137 festivals. “We’re very honored to be nominated,” said Porter and Kuwahata. “Our entire team poured love and passion into this project, stitch-by-stitch and frame-by-frame. We could not have created this film without them and we’re overwhelmed with gratitude.” Porter explained that the process of creating the film and then having it nominated was not a simple one. After Koertge gave the husband and wife duo, who own Tiny Inventions studios, full creative license to adapt the story, it took a year for pre-production work, which included story boarding, writing and obtaining funding through grants. The short five-minute film took nine months to animate and two years to produce. “The process to be nominated for an Academy Award is different for a small studio than a bigger studio,” said Porter. “For small studios, you submit to film festivals accredited by the Academy.

Top left: Directors Ru Kuwahata and Max Porter. Above: Their film Negative Space We won the Academy qualifying festival last summer, then got onto the short list of 10 and then the five final nominees.” Negative Space follows a father-and-son relationship through the art of packing a suitcase. The short film opens with the son unzipping a suitcase and describing the ways in which his father told him to pack most efficiently. As the son puts his suitcase in the car and drives off, the road unzips to a flashback of when the son was much younger. The playful scene recounts how the father taught his son to pack a bag, as the son is whisked away into the bag itself. Soon enough, the clothes begin to lap against his feet as though they are waves, bringing him under the sea. As the underwater scene vanishes, one watches as the son packs his father’s bag for a trip and awaits a message telling him what a “perfect” job he did. The tone turns somber as the film jumps back to the son’s original destination: a funeral parlor, where he is alone, standing over his father’s casket and utters the striking words, “look at all that wasted space.” “We were drawn to how clear the poem

communicates a relationship between a father and son and we thought it spoke very honestly about the connections parents and children have,” said Porter. “For us, we didn’t try to put a message into the project. What’s been beautiful is that the film is giving people a space to talk about what’s important to them and how they connect with their own family members.” Porter and Kuwahata have been working together for 11 years and Porter explained that because Kuwahata is his wife, they are able to truly trust one another and know one another’s strengths which allows for a natural process of collaboration. “Every project we do is a conversation because we’re partners in work and in life, so that conversation can be that much more intimate,” said Porter. Produced by Ikki Films in France, Negative Space is nominated alongside four other films. The 90th Academy Awards begin at 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 4. A Four-State Gun Safety Coalition

‘‘

BY STEVE MOSCO smosco@antonmediagroup.com

Rather than wait for the federal government to come to its senses...New York is joining with New Jersey, Connecticut and Rhode Island to take matters into our own hands.

The mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, on Feb. 14, prompted Governor Andrew Cuomo to partner with governors in Connecticut, New Jersey and Rhode Island to announce a new States for Gun Safety regional alliance. The partnership forms a multi-state database to supplement the federal National Instant Criminal Background Check System, trace and intercept guns that are used in crimes as well as guns transported across state borders and launch the nation’s first Regional Gun Violence Research Consortium that will study the issue to better inform policy makers and the public nationwide. “Here in New York, we’re proud to be home to the nation’s strongest gun safety law. However, the federal government’s continued inaction on this issue has not only allowed the epidemic of gun violence to spread, but it has actually prevented the laws like the SAFE Act from being fully effective,” said Cuomo. The SAFE Act, the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013, was enacted

’’

—Governor Andrew Cuomo

following the devastating school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT, in 2012. It banned the sale of assault weapons and high capacity magazines and helps keep guns out of the hands of the dangerously mentally ill, while safeguarding the rights of law-abiding gun owners. “Rather than wait for the federal government to come to its senses and pass responsible gun safety legislation,” Cuomo continued, “New York is joining with New Jersey, Connecticut and Rhode Island to take matters into our own hands. As part of the coalition, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Rhode Island will share information about individuals who are prohibited from purchasing or possessing a firearm within each state. The governors, Connecticut’s Dan

Malloy, New Jersey’s Phil Murphy, Rhode Island’s Gina Raimondo, along with Cuomo, said that by sharing information, states can more effectively prevent certain individuals from purchasing a gun, obtaining a weapon and/or getting a gun permit. The agreement, in accordance with federal and state privacy protections, will provide state law enforcement agencies with details on the firearm purchase or permit denials for those who are disqualified. Cuomo said that despite the passage of gun safety laws restricting the purchase and carry of firearms across the four states, the lack of federal regulations preventing individuals from purchasing guns in other states and transporting them across borders has undermined state legislation.

“To combat this practice, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Rhode Island will direct their law enforcement intelligence centers to work cooperatively to trace the use of out-of-state guns in crimes and share information in order to intercept criminals transporting illegal guns across state borders,” said Cuomo. “The four state fusion centers that will jointly share information under this agreement are the New York State Intelligence Center, the Connecticut Intelligence Center, New Jersey Regional Operations Intelligence Center and the Rhode Island State Fusion Center.” The four states will also designate institutions of higher education to partner and create the nation’s first Regional Gun Violence Research Consortium, which will be comprised of public health, social welfare, public policy and criminal justice experts who will share and examine data to better inform policymakers nationwide. The consortium, the governor said, will fill the void left by the federal government’s 1996 ban on the use of federal funds to study gun violence, which has obstructed research efforts across the nation, including at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health.

It is set in 1983 in Northern Italy, focusing on a young boy who falls in love with his father’s research assistant who is visiting for the summer. They bond over their Jewish culture and their mutual evolving sexual attraction. Their denial of these feelings only increase as the days go by. ...........................

Phantom Thread (R)

On what is said to be Daniel Day-Lewis’s last film, he is nominated in the Best Actor category along with supporting actress, Lesley Manville and Best Director, Paul Thomas Anderson. This movie takes place in 1950s London where Lewis plays a celebrated dressmaker whose life takes an unexpected turn when he meets a young waitress who later becomes his lover. ...........................

The Post (PG-13)

Meryl Streep is up for Best Actress and stars in this film alongside Tom Hanks and Sarah Paulson. Under direction from Steven Spielberg, Streep portrays Katharine Graham, who took over the paper following her husband’s suicide. Along with her editor, played by Hanks, the two decide to publish the controversial classified documents regarding America’s involvement in the Vietnam War. Streep and Hanks are as you expect, brilliant, in this historic biography.

Dunkirk (PG-13)

Directed by Christopher Nolan, who has been nominated in that category, Dunkirk stars Fionn Whitehead, Damien Bonnard, Lee Armstrong, Mark Rylance and Harry Styles. It relives the gripping evacuation by land, sea and air of allied soldiers from Britain and France in 1940. The film is beautifully written and with little dialogue, the action speaks for itself. ...........................

The Shape of Water (R)

Another front-runner, The Shape of Water stars Sally Hawkins, who is up for Best Actress along with Best Supporting Actress, Octavia Spencer, Best Actor in a Supporting role, Richard Jenkins, and Best Director Guillermo del Toro. Michael Shannon and Doug Jones also star in this bizarre tale of love and self-worth set in the 1950s in a top secret laboratory. ...........................

Darkest Hour (PG-13)

Gary Oldman is nominated for best actor in this film, which also stars Lily James and Kristin Scott Thomas. Directed by Joe Wright, Oldman is superb as Winston Churchill, who must decide to negotiate or fight with Hitler.

There have been many movies and documentaries about Churchill but this is one of the best. ...........................

Get Out (R)

Rounding off the Best Film nominees is Get Out with Daniel Kaluuya getting a Best Actor nod along with director Jordan Peele. The movie also stars Allison Williams and Bradley Whitford. This is a thriller at its best with Kaluuya playing a young African American man getting ready to meet his white girlfriend’s family for the first time up at their sheltered estate. What happens next will have your head spinning. So no matter what your taste is you are sure to find something to enjoy, cozied up with a popcorn and drink. WE LOVE OUR PETS Long Island Pet Expo Comes To Suffolk Community College FEBRUARY 28 - MARCH 6, 2018

BY ALLISON EICHLER

F

aeichler@antonmediagroup.com

or pet owners and animal enthusiasts alike, the Long Island Pet Expo on March 3 and 4 is sure to please attendees of all ages. Hosted at the Suffolk Community College Health and Exposition Center in Brentwood, the expo will feature a wide variety of performers and vendors for both entertainment and educational purposes. This year marks the expo’s ninth visit to the college and will present attractions such as a rabbit and guinea pig agility course, a cat show, dancing dogs, a reptile show with alligators, snakes and more, a butterfly garden and a dog lure course. Tickets to the expo cover the cost of everything you see, but interactive acts, like the butterfly garden and lure course, come with a fee of just a few dollars. At a nominal cost, children will also be able to enjoy a petting zoo and pony rides. Dennis and Karen Garetano, who have owned Family Pet Shows since 2003, have been organizing and running the expo at Suffolk Community College since 2009—it was previously held at Nassau Coliseum. Karen said the event sees anywhere between 10,000 and 14,000 visitors, not including the hundreds of pets that come along for the show. “This is a great family event,” Garetano said. “It’s a very different type of event. Everyone should come down and enjoy a day with their family.” While many of the acts that come to perform at the expo are for entertainment, there are also plenty of opportunities for attendees to learn something new. Reptile and bird shows will inform crowds about exotic animals, The Martial ARFS will demonstrate obedience and exercise for your dog, Doggie U K9 Academy will demonstrate dog agility and some of Long

Island’s animal rescue groups will be at the show to educate visitors on responsible pet ownership and offer pets in need of a home. More than 100 vendors will have booths set up around the expo, offering crowds the latest and greatest products for their pets. Veterinarians and groomers will also be available to speak with to learn everything you need to know to keep your pet happy and healthy. To keep human guests happy and healthy, the show will have concession stands available for drink and food purchases at attendees’ convenience. A major hit with residents around the island, the Long Island Pet Expo is expecting to draw in a crowd in excess of 12,000 people for its 2018 weekend. Garetano said the best part of the event for her is seeing the way they are able to delight guests. “We like to see how people enjoy themselves,” Garetano said. “Kids are amazed at some of the stuff they see.” Pet owners are more than welcome to bring their well-behaved, leashed friends to the show. As long as a waiver is filled out and your pet is up to date on vaccinations, pets of all shapes and sizes may roam the expo. Miniature horses, potbelly pigs, snakes and even skunks are some of the more unconventional pets Garetano has seen visiting the show. It’s only fitting that such a wide variety of both furry and scaly guests come to the expo, as Garetano explained it is “an event for all animals.” The show runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. One-day tickets, which include reentry throughout the day, cost $13 for adults and $6 for children. Tickets covering entry for both days are also available for purchase. Discounted tickets can be bought on the expo’s website. For more information, visit familypetshows. com/long-island-pet-expo or call 631-423-0620.

Healthy Dog Food Brands For Your Pup BY ALLISON EICHLER aeichler@antonmediagroup.com

Between toys, outfits and plushy beds, there are countless ways to treat your pup to the best of what stores have to offer, but are you feeding your pooch the right food? Protesters Denounce ‘Puppy Mills’ BY KIMBERLY DIJKSTRA kdijkstra@antonmediagroup.com

“Adopt, Don’t Shop,” read signs carried by protesters outside Westfield Sunrise Mall in Massapequa on Sunday, Feb. 18, in opposition to American Dog Club’s alleged sourcing of dogs from USDA Licensed Commercial Breeders, commonly known as puppy mills. The protest drew dozens of demonstrators, who brought signs, pets and stories of animal abuse at the hands of puppy mill breeders. Puppy mills are large commercial breeding facilities where dogs are confined to inhumane conditions while being forced to breed. “By the time a breeding dog is 10 years old, she easily could have had 20 litters,” said protest organizer Keri Esposito-Michel, of Puppy Mill Free Long Island, NY. “These animals are never socialized, never receive exercise or a loving touch.” She added that many puppies die due to illness during transit from the Midwest or arrive in pet stores with congenital or contagious diseases. American Dog Club, which also has locations in Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove and Westfield South Shore in Bay Shore, has denied selling puppies from unlicensed breeders. The ASPCA on its website explains why breeders can be both licensed and puppy mills: “Many pet store owners will tell you they get all their puppies from ‘licensed USDA breeders’ or ‘local breeders.’ Pet stores often use this licensing to provide a false sense of security to customers, when what it really means is that they do, in fact, get their puppies from puppy mills.” “Educating the public is very important,” said Esposito-Michel. “We want them to know just what their money is supporting each time they purchase a puppy from a pet store, or online for that matter.”

Puppy Mill Free Long Island, NY is Facebook page run by volunteers. The group receives sick and dead dog reports from consumers daily and provides information on where they can file their complaints. Inquirers are often referred to the NYS Attorney General, NYS Department of Agriculture, Nassau County Consumer Affairs, Suffolk County Consumer Affairs and the Better Business Bureau. New York State has a Pet Lemon Law which can be found at ag.ny.gov/

consumer-frauds/pet-lemon-law. “In addition to this information, we assist consumers in obtaining pets from their local shelters, breed-specific rescue groups and, if need be, in finding reputable breeders, which would never sell to a pet store,” said Esposito-Michel. “A smart consumer is an informed consumer.” The organization has been working to get New York lawmakers to join more than 200 municipalities across the country in banning the sale of

commercially bred animals in pet stores. California passed a statewide ban in 2017, to go into effect January 2019. “Puppies aren’t commodities,” Esposito-Michel said. “These pet stores are making a living off the backs of suffering animals and it must stop.” Visit www.facebook.com/puppy millfreelongisland and www.aspca. org/animal-cruelty/puppy-mills/ closer-look-puppy-mills for more information.

Kids & Money:

How To Approach It BY CHRIS BIRSNER specialsections@antonmediagroup.com

M

ost parents would do anything for their children, including give them whatever they want. Spoiling a kid rotten is fun because you like bringing joy to them. However, there is a time in life where parents will have to start teaching children the value of a dollar. It’s hard in this world to earn money and it’s not something that is meant to be spent 24/7. There are plenty of ways to approach getting your child to learn about all the pros and cons of money. Here are six ways you can teach your kids the importance of how to handle it.

Pay them for bigger household tasks

You need some help around the house and your child doesn’t want to contribute? Promise them a bit more cash in their allowance. These bonuses are a way to say thanks for contributing to keeping the house afloat while also introducing your kid to the worth of working hard. However, refrain from paying them for minor, obvious tasks they do. Stuff like cleaning their room and taking out the trash are not tasks you need

to pay them for. Instead, major tasks like mowing the lawn and cleaning the cars are time-consuming and tiring, so sweetening the deal makes it easier.

least a year or two would stop them from buying something similar.

Set up a place for them to save up their money Most kids will want to spend their

It’s important for us to plan out how much money we are going to spend for certain things, so it’s just as important to get kids to think the same way. Let’s say a birthday is coming out for someone and your child wants to give them a gift. Work with them on how much money is worth spending on said gift. This will give them the idea to think before they spend.

Teach them to buy things that last

It’s easy for kids to want to buy food or toys that are only good for one use. Still, parents should tell their kids to consider items that would have a little bit more longevity. You want to teach kids that spending money on things that won’t last long would lead to buying it again if they want to enjoy it more, while an item that may last at

to teach their kids that saving some of it up for future expenses in important to do, especially if they want to buy something really expensive or hold on to money for important situations (college fund, insurance, etc.). Get a jar and tell your child to put half of their allowance in the jar for future use and the other half they should pocket now for immediate use.

Start an allowance

This is a very common way of introducing kids to cash. Parents figure out how much money they are willing to give their child every week, month, year, etc. Set guidelines as to what they can’t buy with the money so they don’t go crazy with it. The longer the time between payments is, the more hesitant your child will be to spend money. An allowance

relieves some of the pressure off of the parent since the child will have to learn that, once the money is handed out, they must wait before they can get more.

Take them to the store

In order to begin to trust kids with cash, you need to show them what spending money looks like. Bring them with you to a store and purchase a few items. Show them how to count their money, give it to the cashier, and get change back. This would also be an opportunity to teach them more complex aspects of spending, such as using a credit card or writing a check. This won’t be an easy thing to teach kids. They may be very confused at first or they may want to go crazy with wanting to buy things. Nevertheless, it’s better to teach kids early about the importance of money. Learning how to spend money while also budgeting how much you spend and saving the money you don’t will be better for kids to learn immediately rather than wait until they’re older and need it more.

Teen Dating Violence

181466 C

Warning signs and ways to help teens who are abused by their partner

Over 30 Programs! Special Discount for campers (3-7yrs)!! Tours by appointment. (516) 393-4207

Each year in the United States, more than 1 million high school students experience abuse by someone they are dating. Although February is known as Teen Dating Violence Awareness month, as the month comes to an end, that doesn’t mean an end to the alarming statistics and the need to bring awareness to them. If you are a parent of a teenager, use this opportunity to speak to your child about teen dating violence. According to the CDC, teen dating violence is defined as the “physical, sexual, psychological, or emotional violence within a dating relationship, including stalking. It can occur in person or electronically and might occur between a current or former dating partner.” Typically, abuse is used by one partner against another in an effort to gain, maintain, or regain power and control. Physical violence can include hitting, kicking, smacking, hair pulling and strangling. Throwing items, pushing and using weapons are also forms of physical abuse. Sexual violence is also a tactic as teenagers are more likely to experiment sexually, and they may be pressured to engage sexually with partners. The pressure may come from a partner or from peers. One in 10 teenagers in a relationship reports being kissed, touched, or forced to have sex against his or her will. Last but not least, psychological and emotional violence can be just as damaging as physical abuse. This includes name calling, stalking, isolating a partner from others and shaming. While they may not be as noticeable on the surface, there are warning signs to spot abuse. Such signs include the

PARENTING MATTERS Graziella Simonetti possible abuser checking the partner’s cell phone or email without permission; demonstrating extreme jealousy; constantly putting the partner down; possessiveness; pressuring sexual activities; engaging in any form of physical harm; expressing anger in an explosive way; isolating the partner from other relationships; controlling and making false accusations. Teens who are victims of abuse in high school are more likely to be victims of abuse throughout their lives. They are more likely to be anxious and depressed and also more likely to engage in dangerous or unhealthy behaviors such as using drugs and alcohol and being sexually promiscuous. Teaching teens about healthy relationship skills, including communication and boundary setting, can help prevent teen dating violence. Talk to your teen about how to develop respectful relationships and discuss what constitutes a healthy relationship. Make teens aware of warning signs and discuss how the media portray both healthy and unhealthy relationships. If your teen or a parent you know would benefit from speaking to a well-trained advocate, refer either to the National Dating Abuse Helpline at 1-866-331-9474, chat at loveisrespect. org or text “loveis” to 22522.

Sleep Away Camps In The Northeast BY DAN QUINONES specialsections@antonmediagroup.com

When the school year ends and summer finally comes around, a majority of kids will spend their time off from school at home, focused on electronics. For those who are looking to make the most of their summer and take on new experiences, sleep away camp is one of the best routes for a child to take. Here are some sleep away camps in the northeast that give children the best opportunity to grow as individuals. Engage Camp Langhorne, PA (Ages 11-17) Engage Camp is not like many other camps. Engage Camp is a five-day Christian camp that aims to teach their campers about God. The Cairn University site of the camp runs from July 9-13. While most camps follow strict schedules for their activities throughout the day, Engage Camp is more open, with scheduled meals, services and events such as a guest speakers and concerts, however, much of the time is open for campers to choose their activities. Engage Camp aims to give every camper the opportunity to learn about Jesus while experiencing adventure.

Adirondack Camp Lake George, NY (Ages 7-17) Adirondack Camp begins June 24 and runs until August 16. The camp offers three sessions, Session One, which goes until July 22, Session Two, which begins on July 22, and a full session, which goes for the full duration of both sessions. While Adirondack Camp offers many common camp events such as sports and aquatics, they also offer a number of unique events. The camp’s oldest tradition is Awiskini, a Native Americanthemed ceremony where camp counselors in costumes dance around a bonfire. The camp also celebrates Gathering once per week. During this time, everyone sits on the rocks and talks quietly about how they feel.

Lake Owego Camp for Boys Pocono Mountains (Ages 7-17) Lake Owego is an all-boys camp that begins June 23 and goes until Aug. 11. There are also two half sessions available. One half session ends on July 17, then the other half session begins on July 18. While it is a boys only, Lake Owego includes activities with Camp Timber Tops, the sister camp of Lake Owego that is located just down the road. The camp has a variety of different activities, including sports, creative arts, outdoor adventures and aquatics. Campers are encouraged to try new things so they are able to choose which activities they would like to take part in.

Camp Echo Lake Warrensburg, NY (Ages 7-15) Camp Echo Lake run from June 23 through Aug. 12. For campers entering third and fourth grade who have not been to the camp before, there is a starter program. Campers can be enrolled for the first four weeks of the seven-week program, and are given the option to extend their enrollment to the full seven weeks. Four core activity areas focus on athletics, creative and performing arts, aquatics and outdoor adventure activities. Camp Echo Lake provides a unique experience for each age group to ensure the camp is developmentally progressive. Camp Lakota Wurtsboro, NY (Ages 7-17) Camp Lakota runs from June 24 through Aug. 11. and campers are given the option of going for the first four weeks, the final three weeks or the entire seven weeks. Sports include baseball, roller hockey and skate boarding as well as water activities, arts, horseback riding and more. There are seven activity periods throughout the day: four are scheduled, while the other three are “electives,” giving each camper the opportunity to focus on their favorite activities.

Holiday Mathis Holiday Mathis Mathis HOROSCOPES ByByByHoliday ARIES (March 21-April 19). Putting your own needs first doesn’t always come easily to you, but figure out how to do this anyway or you’ll have very little to give. Work on it. Another challenge to focus on is recognizing the difference between a need and a want. You may feel like you want love, attention, nurturing... but it’s actually a need.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). You were afraid that if you planted flowers, people would stop bringing them to you. Nope! They’ll bring you more in fact, as they’ll see how much you appreciate them. Flowers will become your brand. Use this as a metaphor for whatever you want more of. Don’t wait. Supply it, and others will supply even more of it. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Even though the human family is your family, too, there are limits to what you can actually do. Somewhere between “more than you think” and “less than everything” is a sweet spot where you can help and be helped. Once you affirm who and what you are responsible for, you will move easier knowing that all else is optional. CANCER (June 22-July 22). People who are enabled eventually become disabled. Your aim will be to help people help themselves. This will involve figuring out what people are good at and backing off so they can do that without interference. Also, you’ll create a challenge and/or accountability structure geared toward getting results.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You have the potential to expand your network this week. The first step is in realizing why this is so important. One or two people is not enough to help you out with your ever-expanding life. When you have a large network of different people whom you can lean on for different things. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You’ll gain confidence as you practice acting from your inner authority. There is no reason to be unduly swayed by the opinions of others who don’t know any more than you do about the situation at hand. The expectations of others are good to know but shouldn’t be the basis of your actions. Act on your instincts. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Anyone can be critical, negative and disapproving. While others around you choose cheap expressions of communication intended to bolster their own weak sense of self, you’ll have the strength to go a different route -- enthusiasm. You see so much that’s right with the situation, and you’ll build from there. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). As you set out to walk your own path, you’ll encounter blocks from people who would much rather you take the main road. They don’t want you getting ahead. Don’t mind these people. Jump over their hurdles -- or just go around. You are centered, self-reliant and meant for bigger things than petty squabbles. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Many circumstances belong to the landscape of reality and are in no way personal to you. Every outcome is affected by multiple factors, many of which are outside of your influence. Perspective will help you be at peace with this. Climb the mountain of wisdom to see beyond your corner of the action. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Most of this week will be spent in preparation for an upcoming opportunity. By the end of the week, your skills will be sharper. Set yourself up for success by approaching your practice scientifically. Repeat the desired actions until they are reflexive. Internalize a skill so it no longer requires conscious direction. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). You like the people around you -- good. There’s still a tremendous benefit to enlarging your circle. A bigger network would be excellent. How about a friend whose idea of fun matches more closely to your own? Imagine this kind of relationship, make room for it in your life, and you’ll draw it closer to you.

THIS WEEK’S BIRTHDAYS

There will be times that favor thinking before doing and times that favor doing first. Success will be largely a matter of congruence. As long as thought and deed are in line with one another, the way is made smooth. And when that’s not the case, it is the opportunity for learning you’ve wanted. Evolution is certain this year, and by the turn of 2019, you’ll be astounded at how far you’ve come in the areas that mean the most to you, including and foremost love and relationships.
