Painting A Picture A vibrant exhibition at the NCMA BY JENNIFER FAUCI JFAUCI@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
Long Island is about to get an education in colorful pop art. The newest exhibition at the Nassau County Museum of Art (NCMA), Kenny Scharf, was curated by museum director Dr. Karl E. Willers and the museum’s staff, and artist Kenny Scharf knows you won’t be disappointed. The exhibit showcases approximately 50 paintings and sculptures from Scharf’s career, inspired by color, the work of Andy Warhol and everyday life around him. Newly re-installed in the museum’s galleries is a version of the artist’s psychedelic, Cosmic Cavern club-like environment, as well as a recreation of his workspace. As an artist, Scharf draws upon pop icons and consumer culture. Fascinated by the topic, he enjoys doing things everyone can relate to. “I don’t particularly like esoteric art that one or two people can understand. I like to appeal to a broad audience, but I also want to send messages that can be looked at in different ways,” said Scharf. “Something can appeal to a child because of the colors and someone more art educated might also see different layers in the work. You have to look further or leave it up to the individual when looking at the work.” Scharf is looking forward to the exhibition and hopes others are, too. “I was introduced to Karl and the idea of doing a show there by some collectors of mine,” he said. As the curator, it was Willers’ job to select what pieces to feature in the showcase. Scharf said the cosmic cavern is something he has been doing for many years and is actually a room he had in his basement in Brooklyn. But there’s plenty of art to see, even if the artist doesn’t know what it is yet. “There’s a lot of different things being featured and a couple things that we’re still trying to get that hasn’t been seen for many years. That would be very exciting,” he said, although the entirety of the show is 250 Post Avenue still not confirmed. “Paintings new and old, the cosmic cavern, bronze Westbury, NY 11590 www.thespaceatwestbury.com sculptures, some good stuff. I’m excited.” For more about the gallery and Scharf’s artwork, see page 10A.

MUSIC
John Nolan Goes Solo BY BETSY ABRAHAM
John Nolan’s Long Island Haunts
BABRAHAM@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
The Baldwin-native returns to Long Island often and has fond memories of home. Here are some of his favorite spots on the island.
John Nolan is best known as the guitarist and co-lead vocalist for punk rock powerhouse Taking Back Sunday (TBS). But when he’s not recording and touring with TBS or spending time with his family, the Long Island native can be found working on his solo projects, which have been warmly embraced by his faithful fan base. Last year, Nolan released his second solo album, Sad Strange Beautiful Dream. The album highlights Nolan’s songwriting talents as well as his ability to craft catchy melodies and hooks. The songs are upbeat, diving into the political and social arenas through a thought-provoking lens. Nolan said he enjoys doing solo work because it allows him to put out music that is 100 percent his, as opposed to the work of TBS which is a collaborative effort. “That’s the fun of doing the solo stuff. I’m putting it all out there and saying I think it’s good and you can decide [for yourself] if you like it,” Nolan said. “But the reaction has been good.” Working on music for TBS carries a lot more pressure because of the larger audience, Nolan noted. His solo work has a smaller, more faithful audience, which allows Nolan the opportunity to be a lot more personal. “It didn’t feel like there was a lot on the line, I knew there wouldn’t be a large group of people analyzing it or critiquing it,” Nolan said. “But every song is so personal and so much of myself. Every song on that solo album is my own baby.” Find out what Taking Back Sunday is up to on page 8A.
1. Long Beach— “It’s one of my favorite places. I lived there for a few years and the west end out there is such a unique place and cool area. I really love going out there whenever I visit.” 2. Montauk— “Way out east in Montauk is a really unique, kind of cool area. Growing up on Long Island, it was like a two hour drive so it was like going out to a whole other world and I always loved that it was a cool place to visit and get away for a while.” 3. Jones Beach— “That was the go-to beach experience when we were kids…that was our summer, getting in the car and going to Jones Beach as much as possible.” 4. Cosmic Comics in Oceanside— “I went there pretty much from when I was 12 from when I moved off of Long Island in my 20s. That’s always a place I try to stop in at when I’m back on Long Island.” 5. Rockville Centre— “I love that whole downtown area by the train station. For a while, Stingers Pub on Sunrise Highway across from the train station was my go-to bar. It’s like my hometown place.”

DINING
BETSY ABRAHAM
Thai’ed And True
When eating out, it’s a good sign if a majority of the diners go out of their way to tell the restaurant’s owner how much they enjoyed their meal. It’s an equally good sign when the owner knows almost every person who walks in the door by name. After a recent visit to Frankly Thai in Franklin Square, it’s no wonder patrons keep coming back and

singing the eatery’s praises. The warm, inviting atmosphere pairs well with the flavorful, authentic cuisine at this popular restaurant, which sets itself apart with its fresh ingredients and commitment to getting it right with each and every plate. The namesake behind Frankly Thai is Frank Perrone, an outgoing, genuine Italian who owns the restaurant with his wife, Jin, a humble and extremely-talented Thailand-native who heads up the kitchen. While many restaurants claim authenticity, Frankly Thai is the real deal. The recipes come from Jin’s mother, who had plenty of experience cooking for her seven children as they grew up in Thailand. “The food comes from our table in Thailand, right here,” Frank said. “All the recipes are an extension of

THAI’ED from page 6A satay pairs well with the cucumber or peanut sauce, and the crab rangoon, stuffed with cream cheese and crab is a savory delight, especially topped with the hot chili sauce. The papaya salad, with hand-shredded green papaya and carrots, tomatoes, string beans, peanuts and lime dressing is a refreshing and tasty choice that serves as a great precursor to whatever rich food you’re about to indulge in from the entrée menu. The true stand-out on the appetizer menu is the golden bags, crispy spring sheets filled with sautéed ground chicken, corn, onions and cilantro. These bitesized pouches of deliciousness are packed with flavor and the taste is taken to another level when paired with the sweet chili sauce. They’re great for sharing, but if you’re feeling selfish, you can’t go wrong getting your own plate. As diners move onto the main

While some Thai restaurants settle for mass producing dishes and curries, resulting in plates that all come out tasting vaguely like peanut, Frankly Thai distinguishes itself by hand crafting

The light and fluffy Thai-style zeppolis are addictive and the Thai-style crepe, a soft pastry served with homemade ice cream, is delicious. With the love and dedication that is put into each plate, Thai is done right at Frankly Thai. The only challenge is deciding whether to go family-style or keeping the dish to yourself. The Witches: Salem 1692 BY MAURA VERNICE MVERNICE@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
Call Today (516) 504-3673
The Witches: Salem, 1692, by Stacy Schiff, is a historical novel that reads like a twisting, turning mystery. Schiff pulls back the curtain on this bizarre episode in American history to reveal the underbelly of the unnerving story. Her writing is mesmerizing as she chooses real characters from history and breathes life into them. Though the story of the Salem Witch Trials has been studied and retold by many, Schiff uses her formidable talents as a researcher and storyteller to give readers another view into the episode. The book covers the historical episode, which began in 1692 and only lasted about nine months. By the end of those nine months, 19 people had been executed for witchcraft. The book includes 16 pages of pictures of court documents, images of the players in the drama and historical depictions of witches and witchcraft. When asked why she decided to write about Salem, Schiff said, “Salem stands among our first great unresolved mysteries, our original courtroom drama. Most tragically, the papers from the actual trials have been lost. We have only pages from the preliminary hearings, a few death warrants, confessions, and petitions. In several cases, testimony was doctored after the fact; accusations against some of those who hanged, for example, were beefed up after their executions. And overall the year evaporated from diaries. It was as if the whole episode could be erased if the papers could be destroyed. That is particularly ironic, as the Puritans were maniacal record-keepers. They did not like for anything to be forgotten. The real conspiracy was the silence afterward.” Schiff won the Pulitzer Prize for her biography, Véra (Mrs. Vladimir Nabokov). She also wrote Cleopatra and A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America, for which she won the George Washington Book Prize. Schiff will be speaking at The Friends of the Port Washington Library’s (FOL) 47th Annual Book & Author Luncheon, which will be held Friday, May 13, at the North Hills Country Club in Manhasset. Best-selling novelist Susan Isaacs is the program moderator. Reservation brochures will be available beginning April 1 in the library and online at www.pwpl.org/fol. Tickets will be $75 each. Film rights for the book have been optioned by Scott Rudin/Sony Pictures. For more information go to www.stacyschiff.com. The Witches: Salem, 1692 (Little, Brown; Oct. 27, 2015; $32).

Beer Springs Ahead
The Brews Of Spring Here are three of the best beers to usher in the spring season:
BY STEVE MOSCO SMOSCO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
Grapefruit Sculpin,
Ballast Point Brewing Company
Patrons can sample more than 100 beers at the Spring Beer Festival. Tickets are $45 plus tax when purchased online in advance of the event and $55 at the door on the day of the beer festival. Designated drivers are encouraged to attend and can get tickets for $12, but they will not receive a tasting glass and are not permitted to sample any beer. If a designated driver is seen shirking their responsibility by drinking beer, they will be removed from the festival immediately. Everyone who purchases a ticket to the event is guaranteed entry. Organizers have limited the number of attendees to ensure that everyone who purchases tickets will be able to sample the beers they want and move around with ease. There will be plenty of water and food available for purchase. For more information, visit, www.springcraftbeerfestival.com.
The award-winning West Coast brewery offers this fine specimen with the tart freshness of grapefruit perfectly complementing the IPA’s naturally citrus hop character. Sure, grapefruit is a winter fruit, but this easy-drinking brew tastes like sunshine.
Spring Fling Ale,
Blue Point Brewing Company Long Island’s most successful craft brewery offers this balanced amber ale for a short time, like a fleeting spring romance. The uniquely blended malts mingle with subtle flavors of honey and nut as a delicate hop aroma makes this an easily drinkable brew.
Glimmerglass Spring Saison, Brewery Ommegang
This Cooperstown brewery swings into spring with this sweet orange peel and pink peppercorn brewed beer. It nestles a delicate floral hop character and a touch of spiciness with a crisp finish and lingering notes of yeast and touches of fruity pepper.

Spring means lots of things to different people. As we shake away the winter weariness, some celebrate the longer days and outdoor activities, while others denounce the season as the bringer of chores, bugs and allergies. Whether praising spring or ruing it, the best solution is to drink beer. The additional daylight hours call for brighter flavors to awaken those cold comatose taste buds—with crisp ales, Belgian blondes and lighter IPAs topping the tasting menu during the shortest of seasons. A good place to sample some spring awakenings will be the 10th annual Spring Craft Beer Festival at Belmont Park Racetrack, 2150 Hempstead Tpke. in Elmont, on April 2. With two sessions—from 12:30 to 4 p.m. and 5:30 to 9 p.m.—the festival will see more than 50 craft brewers from around the country pouring samples of 100-plus of the finest brews. The beer lineup, which is growing by the day, already includes Blue Point Brewing Company, Long Ireland Beer Company, Fire Island Beer Co., Samuel Adams, Shipyard Brewing Co., Eastern Front Brewing Co., Great South Bay Brewery, Crabbie’s Alcoholic Ginger Beer, Sea Dog Brewing Co., Angry Orchard Hard Cider, Small Town Brewery and many more to come.

THE SPORTS DESK
New York Yankees 2016:
World Series Underdogs? BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
As the New York Yankees move into their 116th season, like every other franchise around Major League Baseball, hope springs eternal. All this despite the fact that the Bronx Bombers were ignominiously bounced from the playoffs 3-0 by the Houston Astros in the American League wild-card game last year at Yankee Stadium. Following a regular season record of 87-75 that found the Yankees sputtering to the finish line and finishing second, six games behind the American League East leading Toronto Blue Jays, August, September and the brief post-season had its share of drama. Mark Teixiera was finished for the season with a broken leg diagnosed in August, starter Nathan Eovaldi followed suit with an elbow injury and the day before the wild-card game, C.C. Sabathia left the team to check himself into an alcohol rehabilitation center. Going into 2016, the Yankees still have a roster of aging all-stars (Alex Rodriguez, Teixiera, Brian McCann, Carlos Beltran) and various predictions have them finishing second or lower. That said, a number of off-season moves and current factors don’t make the chances of the Bombers winning their 28th World Series title as slim as
some would have you believe. Age And Injuries With the Yankees ranking among teams with the highest median age in the MLB (about 30), there are plenty of question marks about the injury bug rearing its ugly head. In fairness, Teixiera was having a career season (.255/31 HR/79 RBI) when he was felled by a freak foul ball that wound up fracturing his shin. Likewise, Alex Rodriguez turned 40 and defied Father Time and expectations (.252/33 HR/86 RBI) while leading the team in home runs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, on-base plus slugging and walks despite faltering badly in the last two months of the season. More problematic were regulars like Jacoby Ellsbury, who once again wound up on the disabled list and hit a paltry .224 in 74 games after getting off of the disabled list and departed second baseman Stephen Drew, who wound up with a .201 batting average. Off-season acquisitions like former Cubs star second baseman Starlin Castro and switch-hitter Aaron Hicks, who can play all three outfield positions, should shore up both the defense and lineup.
rotation. Will Sabathia bounce back from rehab or continue the downward slide of recent years that’s found him going 23-27 the past few seasons? Despite his promising stint towards the end of last season, does rookie Luis Severino have the stamina to get through the grind of a full major-league season? Can $175 million righthander Masahiro Tanaka get past off-season elbow surgery and throw the 200 innings he promised the media masses when he reported to camp this year? Ivan Nova—will year two after Tommy John surgery prove to be the charm or will inconsistent starts continue to be his M.O.? Does Michael Pineda get the benefit of the doubt when he promises to go 200 innings despite his career high being 171 from back in 2011, when he was a star rookie for the Seattle Mariners?
Rotation The biggest questions being asked have to do with the New York Yankees starting
Bullpen Expectations We already know what a dominating back of the bullpen the combination of Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances were last season. Adding fireball-throwing closer Aroldis Chapman ups the ante significantly, but as General Manager Brian Cashman pointed out in a recent interview, “What will excite us is if we can get to those guys with the lead.” Indeed.
