Discovering The
Gardens Of America Gaze at the floral beauty at the Hicks Nurseries’ Flower & Garden Show BY KAREN MUSGRAVE EDITORIAL@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
Come in out of the cold and enjoy the first signs of spring at Hicks Nurseries’ Flower & Garden Show in Westbury. The 26th annual show features expertly designed gardens that celebrate the unique landscapes of the United States. Free and indoors, the show is open through Sunday, March 20. “Gardens can be as diverse as the landscape of our great country,” said Nelson Demarest, visual merchandising manager of Hicks Nurseries. “The gardens of our 2016 flower show demonstrate how homeowners can easily create the look of their favorite vacation destinations here in their Long Island garden.” The Southeast Garden display pays tribute to the lush, tropical romance you find in the city of New Orleans. A balconied building canopied with Boston ferns and hanging Spanish moss sets the scene. Towering palm trees and colorful foliage plants surround a courtyard that features a grand

fountain. Stroll through this garden and embrace the charm of the south. The Pacific Northwest has some of the most beautiful gardens anywhere. The display is centered around a towering waterfall flanked with large evergreens. The restful design features a contemplative Zen garden you can recreate in your own backyard. The artistic influence of the Seattle area is also reflected in this garden. Southwestern inspired gardens are not out of the question here on Long Island. This display shows how adding elements of texture and color can create the impression of the southwest in your garden. Beautiful succulent plants add texture and color to the design, which is built around a stone fire pit and rustic arbor. Feel at home as you stroll through the Northeast Garden. This family presentation is bursting with colorful annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs. A cedar shingled cottage is the centerpiece of the display, which helps you visualize how you can beautifully landscape your own home. After visiting the gardens, take one of the nursery’s 20 free seminars about popular gardening concepts including organic lawn care, container gardening, pruning and more. Planting workshops for children and adults will also be available including the children’s pea seed planting. For a list of activities and events, visit www.hicksnurseries.com. The 26th annual Flower & Garden Show, which runs through March 20, is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Karen Musgrave, CNLP, Hicks Nurseries For more on the flower and garden show, see page 8A.

St. Paddy’s Every Day
Paddy’s Loft, going on 18 years in business, leaps beyond the traditional confines of the neighborhood pub. The welcoming atmosphere is there, as is the warm embrace of a family setting—but what sets it apart is the quality of the cuisine prepared and served under a delightfully Irish ambiance. Everything from the carpeting to the lighting to the wall decorations make Paddy’s Loft the perfect pub—even more so when St. Patrick’s Day rolls around. The restaurant’s celebrations kick off Saturday, March 12, and run through Sunday, March 20. Bands and solo musicians will grace the airwaves of the restaurant with live music all week

gravy shrouding the entire dish and making each bite delectable and smooth. Much more than meat and potatoes, Paddy’s Loft boasts an enticing seafood menu. Ireland is, afterall, an island, so it stands to reason that the Irish know their way around a fishing vessel. On special this particular night was scallops and shrimp over spinach risotto with a lobster cognac sauce. The masterfully seared scallops married well with the shrimp, and provided the perfect foil to the creamy spinach risotto. The lobster cognac sauce took the dish to an entirely unexpected level, salty and
savory in all the right ways. For dessert, order a Jameson Irish Coffee and bread pudding. The sticky and sweet bread pudding finishes the meal on a enlivening note, with the Irish coffee doing its part to relax the mind and body. Paddy’s Loft also offers catering, as well as a traditional Irish breakfast everyday after 10:30 a.m. The newest menu additions to the restaurant include small plates, pub grub and a late night menu served until 4 a.m. Paddy’s Loft is located at 1286 Hicksville Rd. in Massapequa. 516798-7660 www.paddysloft.com. smosco@antonmediagroup.com

long. Traditional Irish food will also be available, including corned beef, bangers and mash, beef stew, smoked salmon and fish and chips, just to name a few. Eaters can’t go wrong with the restaurant’s take on the classic corned beef and cabbage. Served along with the traditional trimmings of potatoes and carrots, the corned beef is slow cooked and fork tender, basted perfectly with the meat’s natural fatty juices. Paired with mustard and Paddy’s Loft’s perfect pint of Guinness, it is the quintessential Irish bite. Another traditional dish to consider is the bangers and mash, which sounds simple, but the flavor profile is deep and rich, with a savory, brown onion

Spring Savings From
A Super Lineup
Four Seasons
BY DANIEL WHITE
EDITORIAL@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
Looking at this year’s slate of upcoming comic book movie theatrical releases, no matter if you fancy yourself a hero or villain, moviegoers will have plenty of opportunities to catch some action on the big screen. This year has certainly started off with a bang. Deadpool, directed by Tim Miller and starring Ryan Reynolds as the titular “merc with a mouth,” has exceeded every expectation to become one of the highest grossing R-rated films of all time and land the second largest opening in the genre, right behind Marvel’s The Avengers in 2012.
150216B
Call Today (516) 504-3673 DC’s big test arrives in a few short weeks on March 25 with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Pitting two of the most iconic heroes against each other should be a no brainer when considering its possible box office bona fides. Coming off a semi-disappointing turn with 2013’s Man of Steel, the latest Batman/Superman vehicle looks to add to the burgeoning DC film universe with a dizzying array of side characters. Early response to the trailers has been pretty evenly split among fandom, with the film’s dark tone not sitting well with folks that tend to think of Superman as Earth’s greatest Boy Scout. May will see the arrival of Captain America: Civil War, directed by the Russo brothers. The pair’s last outing with Cap, The Winter Solider, is considered almost unanimously to be the best film to date in the Marvel cinematic universe, managing to delight with the usual superhero flair, but also revel in political thrills and
mature themes about friendship. Civil War looks to expand upon those themes with a little help from a whole bunch of Avengers. The latest entry in Fox’s X-Men franchise drops on May 27 with Apocalypse. Once again directed by Bryan Singer and featuring what looks to be one of the most niche comic book villains to ever grace the screen, Apocalypse doesn’t have too much to prove. Over the course of 16 years and seven previous X-Men flicks, audiences have come to expect the same tone and can only hope that this year’s entry in the franchise comes to the table with a great script. Next up, Teenage Mutant Ninja

before letting the kids have a look. Finally, Marvel closes out the year with Doctor Strange on Nov. 4. Benedict Cumberbatch plays the main role and the reaction to his casting and costume has been met with praise. The super hero genre grows every year and the films that succeed tend to be the ones that put script over spectacle. But if none of these caped goodies can save the day, there’s always a new Star Wars movie right around the corner.

Turtles: Out of the Shadows arrives on June 3. The first offering from the heroes in the half shell was a critical disappointment, but scored enough green backs to warrant a second go round. This film looks to make adjustments by embracing the feel of the original cartoon from the 1980s, as the alien Krang makes his feature film debut, along with villains Bebop and Rocksteady. Warner Bros. fires the second shot in their planned DC comic’s universe with Suicide Squad on Aug. 5. The film, based on a comic about a group of villains helping out the government to save their own necks, could be the biggest gamble of all the superhero movies coming out this year. It’s hard to not notice the simple fact that a movie aimed somewhat towards children has the word “suicide” in its title. Parents may need to investigate this film

Maniacal March Madness Moments
BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
First founded in 1939, the NCAA Men’s Division 1 Basketball Championship (or what we mere mortals call March Madness), is a single-elimination tournament featuring 68 teams and a maniacal obsession by college hoops fans where terms like bracketology, Cinderella story and seeding get liberally tossed around. Over time, there have been numerous adrenaline-fueled moments that have had their share of goats, heroes and devastating pool results. Here are a handful that stand out. 1. Villanova Upsets Georgetown In 1985 Led by dominating center Patrick Ewing, John Thompson’s Georgetown Hoyas were set to repeat as national champions in a final that pitted them against Rollie Massimino’s upstart Villanova Wildcats. With the latter twice having lost to Ewing’s crew during the regular season, no one expected Massimino’s crew to play the kind of grinding combination of offense and defense that would result in the underdog’s coming away with a 66-64 upset. 2. Texas Western Miners Become First Team To Start Five Black Players In A Championship It began with the Texas Western Miners becoming the first team in NCAA history to start five black players in the 1965-66 season, a year after the Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964. The Miners became the first team to start five black players in a finals game, going on to suit up against
Adolph Rupp’s all-white University of Kentucky squad. With Rupp having been vocal about his opposition to integrating teams, he got his come-uppance when the Miners defeated his Wildcats 72-65 and this game wound up being Rupp’s sole championship loss. 3 North Carolina State Upsets Houston Cougars The 1983 finals found the Houston Cougars’ “Phi Slama Jama” taking the hardwood against Jim Valvano’s North Carolina State “Cardiac Pack.” Houston’s core of four future NBA first-round picks were expected to dominate seeing as they were riding a 26-game winning streak. The reality wound up being the Wolfpack winning a squeaker 54-52 and Houston’s Akeem “The Dream” Olajuwon became the last player to earn the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player while suiting up for the losing finals team. 4. Michigan’s Chris Webber Calls Time Out When There Were None Left The year 1993 found the University of Michigan being led to the NCAA Finals by the Fab Five of Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Jalen Rose, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson. They faced Dean Smith’s University of North Carolina Tar Heels, took a 42-36 lead into halftime but by the middle of the second half, both squads were knotted at 56. Carolina wound up with a 70-67 lead with 90 seconds left and the Wolverines took their final tim-
eout with 46 ticks in the game. Webber rebounded a missed free throw, froze, didn’t get called for traveling and called a timeout even though his team had none left. A technical foul was called, UNC’s Donald Williams hit four free throws and the Fab Five fell 77-71. 5. Duke’s Christian Laettner Vanquishes Kentucky In OT The 1992 final found Mike Kryzyzewski’s Duke Blue Devils and Rick Pitino’s University of Kentucky Wildcats shooting a combined 61 percent from the field. While Duke led 67-55 with 11 minutes left in regulation, Kentucky went on a 38-26 run and forced OT. The grind continued into the extra session until Duke found itself down 103-102 with 2.1 seconds left. Blue Devil Grant Hill wound up sending a pass the length of the court to Christian Laettner, who got a jump-shot off despite having his back to the rim with .3 of a second remaining and having the ball score as the horn sounded.
