The cast list is out for season 22 of Dancing with the Stars. While hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews will be returning along with judges Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli, noticeably absent this season is the power sibling duo of Derek and Julianne Hough. Derek will be busy with his Broadway debut in Singin’ in the Rain, while Julianne will not return to the judges table. Instead, lovable Brit Len Goodman will be crossing the pond back to his judge’s seat. With more athletes than ever before, some

television stars and entertainment personalities, this season doesn’t have as many stand out names, but promises to be one you won’t want to miss, according to senior field producer Adam Raia. “I’m with each celebrity for 10 weeks, so I really get to know them,” said Raia, who has been with the show for 13 seasons. “Mark Ballas is so creative…he always tells a story and it’s so visual. A Mark Ballas production needs to be seen because that’s amazing in itself.” Ever wonder how the producers pick the cast for each season? Raia said that although his

opinion is valued, the ultimate decision lies with the casting director. “What’s cool about our show, if you’ve been on it long enough...they want to talk to you about it,” said Raia on potential celebrities, many of whom join the show to re-gain exposure, are relevant in the news or have always been fans and want their chance to foxtrot. “It’s about getting great personalities and it’s my job to tell those stories. Every week we tell a story so the audience gets to know the star better so when they’re watching the dance, they connect to the dance even more.” For more dancing, see page 8A

Dion: Bronx Boy With A Roots Rock Flair
Dion –New York Is My Home (Instant Records/The Orchard) For the casual music fan, Dion DiMucci falls under the category of oldies act—a guy who toured with early rock ‘n’ roll greats like Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly—and wound up with hits like “A Teenager in Love,” “The Wanderer” and “Runaround Sue.” In truth, that’s only scratching the surface of how much more musically complex this son of the Bronx is. For his first studio album in five years, Dion has continued his ongoing fascination with American roots music that’s not only shown up on recent efforts like Bronx in Blues and Son of Skip James, but dates back to the ‘60s. (Do yourself a favor and track down the 1997 2-CD set The Road I’m On: A Retrospective for further proof). For these 10 songs, Dion enlisted longtime friend Jimmy Vivino, guitarist/band leader for the Basic Cable Band on Conan, to
produce a collection of mostly originals save for the odd cover of blues greats Lightning Hopkins (a loping “Katie May”) and Tampa Red (the midtempo shuffle “I Ain’t For It”). The title cut duet with Paul Simon is a lead-single that’s been rightfully getting plenty of accolades thanks to its heartfelt harmonizing over lines like “You’ll never hear me say the city streets too loud/I hear a gospel hymn in every passing crowd” that could only be authentically sung by two sons of the city. But there’s plenty more to sup on within the nearly 40 minutes of music that are here from the Chuck Berry-ish “The Apollo King,” which finds Dion tipping his hat to late Duke Ellington sideman Big Al Sears to the slide guitar-drenched “Can’t Go Back to Memphis” that Dion sings as convincingly as anyone born south of the Mason-Dixon Line. It’s clear the guy who got his start singing on street corners in the Bronx is still in fine fettle
Dion and if you insist on calling this a comeback, realize that just means you haven’t been listening. Dion will be appearing with Ronnie Spector on April 9 at Kings Theatre, 1027 Flatbush Ave., Brooklyn. Rolling Vietnamese B
ack in 2012, Vietnamese chef Joe Bui hit the road with his native region’s cuisine in tow. He parked his food truck, The Rolling Spring Roll, on Melville’s Spagnoli Road, an industrial stretch connecting Route 110 to all points west. His fresh, scratch-made recipes caught on and soon Bui opened Long Island’s first full-service Vietnamese restaurant on Main Street in Farmingdale. This year, Bui rolled his Vietnamese dream into a second location on Jericho Turnpike in Syosset. The Rolling Spring Roll’s latest incarnation expands the restaurant’s menu, offering options beyond the original location’s selection of appetizers, noodle soups and Vietnamese sandwiches. One of The Rolling Spring Roll’s most popular items is its namesake, the spring roll. Crunchy, fingersized, pork-filled and enhanced with vermicelli noodles, carrots and Vietnamese spices, the spring rolls

pack big flavors in a small package. The spring rolls are served with a side of mam nem, a house-made, pungent sauce made from fermented fish. Playing counterpoint to the crunch of the spring rolls, is the fresh garden snap of the vegetable summer rolls. Served with a richly flavored peanut sauce, the summer rolls boast rice noodles, tofu and bean sprouts rolled in rice paper. Also on the An Choi or “fun food” menu is chef Bui’s tremendous take on chicken wings. Far exceeding wings from national chains and sports bars in flavor, Rolling Spring

VIETNAMESE from page 6A Roll’s Tan Binh chicken wings are golden, crisp and perfect for sharing. The chef shows restraint in applying the sweet chili sauce glaze, gently anointing the wings rather than drowning them—this technique allows the wing to retain its heavenly crunch. Beyond the excellent dumplings and Vietnamese sandwiches—or Banh Mi—The Rolling Spring Roll’s true charm lies in its selection of Pho, a bowl of beautifully married meats or vegetables with onions and flat rice noodles in a rich and aromatic broth. The Pho Bo, with beef, is a big bowl of thinly sliced beef, beef brisket and meatballs, swimming in a fragrant broth dotted with golden flecks of delicious fat. Rolling also offers vegetarian, chicken and seafood versions of this crown jewel of Vietnamese comfort food. The Syosset location’s expanded menu also offers a selection of noodle and rice dishes, including lemongrass chicken, grilled Angus beef satay, sautéed tofu and short ribs, as well as the Spring Roll Bowl—the restaurant’s signature spring rolls cut into pieces and served over

Celebs Rolling The Dice For Strat BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO
Strat-O-Matic inventor Hal Richman
DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
When Strat-O-Matic inventor Hal Richman launched a game that combined his love of baseball and statistics in 1963, little did he know the generation of fans who would become enthralled by it. Using two regular six-sided dice, one 20-sided die and player cards that offer various hitting and fielding outcomes based on actual season statistics and thoroughly determined player ratings, Strat has developed a die-hard following in its five plus decades of existence. (It’s a big enough deal that the Glen Head-based company has an annual Opening Day to herald the arrival of new game sets.) The Numbers Game author Alan Schwarz declared that
a 2002 poll he took of 50 baseball executives found that “exactly half had learned the game in large part by playing Strat-O-Matic as kids.” Other famous fans include retired players Keith Hernandez and Lenny Dykstra, Spike Lee (who incorporated a number of Stratplaying scenes into his film Crooklyn) and actor Tim Robbins. The following celebs wax on about their love of Strat-O-Matic. To read a full feature on Strat-O-Matic, go to page 15A
Famous Fans Go To Bat For Strat-O-Matic Bob Costas (Commack native and NBC sportscaster)
“Strat was definitely part of my baseball education. Baseball lends itself perfectly to Strat, thanks to the nature of individual players in baseball and how it lends itself to statistics, debates, arguments and comparisons across the generations that you don’t get in other sports. I have fond memories of heading over to Queens to play against my cousin John, who introduced me to the game. Strat-O-Matic is a lifelong bond for us. Although John is now Dr. Miller, a respected oncologist in Washington, D.C., a mention of Gary Geiger will get him recounting a game we played almost 50 years ago that I won using this light-hitting player off the bench to win a game with a walk-off home run.”
Bill Daughtry (Mount Vernon native and ESPN sportscaster)
[Strat-O-Matic] played a pretty big part in what I’ve done with my life as a professional. I started playing with my friend Fred Singleton when I was 11 years old on his front steps after school. Obviously, I’m a sportscaster and Strat has always been a library/laboratory/learning tool for the things I do on an everyday basis to earn a living. Of course you get an education about players and player tendencies in all sports— baseball, football, basketball and hockey. On a different level, you use your math skills. You use the skills of your imagination in announcing games. Geography. Spelling. It’s a lot more than just a game. And I’m still playing it today.”
Doug Glanville (former MLB centerfielder)
“[Strat-O-Matic] was huge. I grew up in New Jersey with a brother who is older than me by about seven and a half years. He introduced me to the game as part of the map for my career was to learn Strat-O-Matic. He wanted to train me how to play the game as part of a regimen that included Wiffle ball and stickball. You just get familiar with so many different players and you get a better perspective of everything baseball and not just your team. Strat was where I could learn the tactical side of the game. This was happening when I was six or seven. I was young and he really got me into the game and it just became huge in our lives. We’d order the sets every year. We’d all congregate in the basement, have our draft and I looked up and its 39 years later and I’m playing online.”
