hen many people think of Zach Braff, their mind immediately goes to John Dorian aka J.D. from Scrubs, a medical intern navigating the halls of Sacred Heart Hospital with pals Turk and Elliot by his side. Braff was beloved for his character’s inner soliloquies in which he pondered musings about love, loss and life in general. Now, he is sharing his thoughts as a different character: Alex Schuman, a radio journalist, husband and father of two, who decides to quit his job and follow his dream of starting his own company in ABC’s new sitcom, Alex, Inc. “I was brought this podcast by producer John Davis and I just thought it was amazing. I couldn’t stop listening and I binged the whole first season,” said the actor and filmmaker who saw how much he related to Alex Blumberg and thought it could be a great TV show. So much so that he decided to direct and star in the new sitcom. “We brought on this great writer, Matt Tarses and pitched it and the good people at ABC agreed that it was really good.” Alex, Inc. was inspired by Blumberg’s podcast called StartUp, in which he records everything that happened along his journey having no prior knowledge about starting a business. “He’s a storyteller and it’s almost like an audio reality show. He recorded his wife when they would argue and recorded his horrible pitches to investors to the point where it became this fascinating podcast,” said Braff. “It was very meta because the podcast was the first show on his new channel that he was creating. It just felt so 2018 and relevant: going after

the American dream and owning a business.” And Braff knows a thing or two about following dreams. In 2004, he made his directorial debut with Garden State, winning numerous awards for his work. He also directed several episodes of Scrubs, Wish I Was Here (2014) and Going In Style (2017).
“I had the audacity to direct Morgan Freeman, Alan Arkin, Michael Caine and Christopher Lloyd and it’s that old adage about playing tennis with people who are better than you,” said Braff on directing such legends. “Looking at how much a great actor can do with very little sometimes it’s the stillness that you
really sit back and appreciate. As actors we always want to do something, we want to show that we’re acting and that we’re good but sometimes less is more.” That same mantra holds true for the show as well. Shot on location

ZACH from page 3A in Brooklyn and Manhattan, Alex, Inc. is set for 10 episodes, and what a jam-packed first season it seems to be. Venture investor and Shark Tank judge Chris Sacca plays himself and Braff enlisted actors Sophia Bush (Chicago P.D., One Tree Hill) and Matt Walsh (Veep) as guest stars, but shared that he didn’t want to overload the show with cameos and instead chose to establish it in its own world. “I think it’s a nice fit for ABC primetime and they’re doing comedy better than anyone,” said Braff of Alex, Inc., which will air after the Goldbergs and before Modern Family. “We intended it to be something you can watch with your kids. Even Scrubs when you look back it was a pretty risqué show. Our show is funny but also has a lot of heart in the way that Scrubs did. We try and make you laugh and then hopefully break your heart a little bit.” Braff’s love of comedy goes back to fond memories with his father, coming into the city from New Jersey to see all of Neil Simon’s Broadway shows. He says it was one of the greatest gifts he was given as an aspiring writer. “Everything Neil Simon did in the 80s my father brought us to…Matthew Broderick’s Biloxi Blues and Brighton Beach Memoirs. I was raised on Woody Allen movies and Mel Brooks, those east coast Jewish comedians,” said Braff. “What I love about comedy is the joy you get when you figure out a joke and people laugh. It’s a little bit of a puzzle.” Another comedic inspiration is Eddie Murphy, and Braff noted that Murphy’s stand-up comedy special Delirious changed his life. “When my dad took me to see Beverly Hills Cop it was probably my first R-rated movie,” he said. “It was one of the hardest I ever laughed in my whole life and it was such a bonding moment for both of us…we were both cracking up and are both big fans of Eddie Murphy.” Of his favorite actors, Braff likes Leonardo DiCaprio and Denzel Washington and thinks Jonah Hill and Will Ferrell are hilarious. But when picking

stars for Alex, Inc., Braff said he “searched high and wide all over the universe” for the kids. “They’re really special and genuinely funny,” he said of his TV children Elisha Henig (Ben) and Audyssie James (Soraya). “Elisha is 13, very smart and is more well-read than most adults I know. He plays guitar incredibly well and we put that into the show. Audyssie is so sweet. She’s younger and has less experience but throughout the show she gets better and better and she’s just adorable.” On acting, directing and filmmaking Alex, Inc. and other projects, Braff said that it all goes back to what he learned from Scrubs. “It was like nine years of grad school. I got to work with amazing comedy writers, actors and directors and it’s rare that a filmmaker gets the experience of working with such a myriad of different styles within a nine year period,” he said. “I got to keep learning and Scrubs was a great training ground for that.” Braff brought back Tarses, who was one of the early writers on Scrubs and he wrote one of Braff’s favorite episodes of all time called “My Old Lady.” “It was the fourth episode when all three of us lost our first patient. It set the tone for what the show could: we were a comedy with the crazy fantasies at time but then Scrubs ingeniously could turn the corner and deal with real life problems so that episode was really moving to me,” said Braff of the episode when an older patient with a terminal illness is ready to die, and she coaches J.D., a young doctor on how to deal with her death. “I think that was really solid writing and Alex, Inc. is still a comedy but in the spirit of Scrubs, there is still a lot of emotion.” Alex Inc., premieres on ABC March 28 at 8:30 p.m.

perfectly seasoned and unlike most other fast-casual joints, they ask how you want your burger cooked— though ordering it medium rare comes with a warning about undercooked meat. Burger Bite also boasts a larger-than-average patty and biting into the double requires a slightly unhinged jaw—a true mark of greatness for burger gluttons. As for the bun, it was beautifully soft and though it was not a potato bun (my personal favorite), it held up against the burger juice where a lesser bun would have surely disintegrated. Moving on to the fries and shake, Burger Bites French fries were golden, crispy, salty and did not to go limp when held horizontally—fry perfection. The vanilla shake meanwhile was thick and offered the perfect soothing balm for the top-heavy burger flavors. www. burger-bite.com

urgers appear on menus in its lowest form at fast food joints and as overly fancy abominations at high-end restaurants. Somewhere in between is the fast-casual burger—a loftier take on the humble hamburger that is more affordable than snooty versions and yet far surpasses any franchise with a drive-thru or a mascot. Here is my ranking of our local burger joints—specifically, eateries where you order at a counter, then go claim your seat before your name is called or your buzzer sounds. In the name of consistency, I placed the same order at each location: a double-patty signature cheeseburger with an order of fries and a vanilla shake. Orders
were rated on the overall experience, specifically the burger’s taste, seasoning, greasiness and bun, along with the quality of the fries and shake. *Note: I wanted to stick mainly with restaurants that specialize specifically in fast-casual burgers. That is why certain places, though I may love their burgers, did not make the list.
dozens of locations. The standard Elevation Burger features two patties, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato and Elevation sauce on a potato bun. There are a few elements to this burger that place it ahead of the next one on my list—most notably the cheddar cheese, which is a superior, more flavorful cheese than the standard American; and the fact that Elevation uses a higher quality ground meat than most burger places of a similar ilk. For lack of a better term, the Elevation burger just tasted cleaner than most fast-casual offerings. The grease was there, but not overpowering. The fries, unfortunately, were oily and disappointing, despite the menu’s claim that they are “award-winning.” As for the shake, nothing to complain about, just pure class. www.elevationburger.com Shake Shack Westbury The ultra-popular chain was a surebet for top ranking, but it loses points in a few key categories. First, the positives: there’s a reason why Shake Shack is so popular. The brand has perfected the fast-casual approach to service, while also doling out burgers that are far above those lower-rung fast food establishments. The double ShackBurger has American cheese, with lettuce, tomato and ShackSauce on a Martin’s potato bun. That Martin’s bun—high marks to the front office of Shack Shake for recognizing the greatest that is the Martin’s potato bun. I’m a firm believer that no other bun stands up to burger grease quite like Martin’s. But alas, my ranking system is not based solely on buns. The flavor itself failed to overcome the

Presiding Over Nassau’s History BY BETSY ABRAHAM
babraham@antonmediagroup.com
While the future is uncertain, one thing is for sure: history tends to repeat itself. The cyclical nature of life is part of what drew Natalie Naylor to become an expert in the past. “I find it interesting to see what happened in the past and I think it can be helpful looking at the present and future,” Naylor said. “It’s interesting to see how we got here.” Naylor is a retired Hofstra University history professor and current president of the Nassau County Historical Society, an organization which dates back to 1915. The 103-year old organization now boasts 240 members, and regularly sponsors historical programs with speakers who are authorities on Long Island life and history, as well as publishes a journal and collects materials related to the county’s former days. The Society’s next meeting is on Sunday, April 22, at the Jericho Public Library where author Brooke Kroeger will speak on her book, The Suffragists: How Women Used Men To Get The Vote. It’s an especially timely topic as it comes on the heels of Women’s History Month and a year after the centennial anniversary
of women receiving the right to vote in New York State. And though women like Rosalie Gardiner Jones, a suffragist from Cold Spring Harbor, led marches from New York City to Albany and Washington, DC, more than 100 years ago, Naylor notes there are parallels in today’s current events. “Rosalie Gardiner Jones walked to Albany and DC to get publicity and raise people’s awareness. That’s the same reason marches and events are taking place today in terms of current concerns about women’s issues,” said Naylor. She compares the Women’s Marches and #metoo movements to the prohibition or temperance movements of the 19th century. And though the fight for equal rights for women and a ban on alcohol sales may seem like they have nothing in common, Naylor said they were both about protecting women. “Women were involved in the

temperance movement in part because men would beat their wives. Besides spending money on alcohol, that was a cause that enlisted women,” said Naylor. “The Women’s Christian Temperance Union was the largest organization of women in the world. It brought many into the suffrage movement.” Women didn’t just affect the national landscape, but the local one
as well. The role of females in shaping Long Island has been “underestimated,” said Naylor, who put a spotlight on the area’s invisible influencers in her book, Women in Long Island’s Past: A History of Eminent Ladies and Everyday Lives. “There have been significant women in Nassau County who have made contributions as philanthropists, civic activists and partners in terms of benevolent activities, churches and volunteer activities,” said Naylor. “They played important roles over the years. More visibly so in recent years, but it goes back to Native Americans who were women cultivated the land.” Just like a century ago, women still have a lot of social concerns. But Naylor pointed out the many advances that have been made in the last four or five decades. “There have been, certainly in recent decades, major changes in women’s status and position,” she said. “Sometimes younger generations take the gains for granted. People have lived through those changes and maybe are not always as aware or conscious of them.”

The competition’s goal is to foster students’ deeper understanding of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) related concepts, recognize outstanding talent and prepare the next generation of globally competitive innovators. CSTL, a nonprofit organization with a mission of encouraging science learning and literacy, is accepting applications from high schools representing teams of one to three students between ages 15 and 18. The competition’s finals will take place at Stony Brook University on Thursday, July 12. Teams will present to judges and display their innovative solutions. Last year, Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School Team “Super Silk” won first place and $10,000. Team members Alyssa Iryami and Audrey Shine’s project was titled:
Utilization of Bombyx mori in the Production of Polymeric Graphene Enhanced Supersilk. The students fed graphene to silkworms and demonstrated that the naturally produced silk was strengthened. They proved that the stronger naturally made silk could be used in many ways including making water filters. “The Spellman HV Clean Tech Competition is an important and engaging program created to inspire and motivate students from around the globe to focus on STEM education and careers. Students who participate gain important skills and discover the many exciting opportunities that careers in science, technology, math and engineering have to offer,” said Dr. Ray Ann Havasy, director of the Center for Science Teaching & Learning. “It is important for us to strongly support the next generation of STEM leaders and play an instrumental role in generating the international attention the Competition deserves,” said Dr. Loren Skeist, President of Spellman HV Electronics. Designer Collaborates With Longines Masters BY ANTON MEDIA STAFF
editoriaL@antonmediagroup.com
Equestrian and designer Ariana Rockefeller and the Longines Masters of New York recently announced a new limited-edition saddle bag to celebrate the one-of-a-kind, prestigious indoor show jumping and luxury lifestyle event coming to New York in April. Combining the best of equestrian sports, high-end shopping, delectable cuisine and nightly musical performances, the Longines Masters of New York will ride into New York for its debut event on April 26 to 29, at NYCB Live, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. To celebrate the upcoming event, Rockefeller created a bag inspired by world-class riding of the global Longines Masters Series taking place in Paris, Hong Kong, and now, her home state of New York. Made of classic canvas and trimmed in grain leather, the Ariana Rockefeller for Longines Masters saddle bag is available in two colors and reflects the smooth leather curves and buckles of a saddle. The gray-on-gray style was
inspired by both the style and attitude of New York City as well as the colors of the Longines Masters brand. The saddle bag will also be available in classic natural twill with brown leather trim. Complete with an embossed logo on the inside pocket, the bag will retail for $550. The bag, produced in Manhattan, will come in a sleek Longines Masters dust bag with the brand’s signature horse icon. “Collaborating with the Longines Masters of New York, I wanted the bag to be a fusion of equestrian and New York minimal style,” said Rockefeller. “Our partnership celebrates the urban setting of the Longines Masters of New York, but is also true to the understated elegance of equestrian sport.” A long-standing supporter of the Longines Masters, Rockefeller participated in the American leg of the international series in its previous home in Los Angeles where she was a judge of the longstanding Charity Pro-Am Competition. “Ariana has been a part of the Longines Masters family and a strong supporter of our American Leg since

Putting Women Back In History BY BETSY ABRAHAM babraham@antonmediagroup.com
The League of Women Voters celebrated “Herstory as History” recently, during a Women’s History Month Luncheon that took a look back at the women who have changed the course of women’s rights. Keynote speaker Dr. Natalie Naylor, professor emerita at Hofstra University and president of the Nassau County Historical Society, spoke on notable women in Long
Island history, including Sarah Baldwin Barnum, Elisabeth Freeman and Cornelia Clinch Stewart. She noted that when she would teach history classes at Hofstra, many students were unable to name important female figures, however, could easily list off their male counterparts. “It’s obvious the history we’ve learned in school has literally been ‘his story.’ Women have virtually been invisible in most history books,” Naylor said. “We need to write women back into history. NASSAU COUNTY NEWS
Legislation Requires Harassment Training Nassau County Presiding Officer Richard Nicolello and the Rules Committee of the Nassau County Legislature recently approved legislation requiring all Nassau County employees to undergo sexual harassment training. The legislation also requires all employees to be retrained on the county’s sexual harassment policy each year they are employed. This proactive legislation aims to remove any ambiguity by teaching what conduct is and is not appropriate. “There is no place for abuse or harassment anywhere, let alone the workplace,” said Nicolello.
“We strive to maintain a safe environment for all our workers in Nassau County, and given the reports of sexual harassment in media and government elsewhere, it is appropriate to update our training protocol in Nassau.” The Rules Committee also passed legislation prohibiting business property owners or their contractors from shoveling snow onto a county road. This will allow snow plows to operate more easily, which makes the roads safer for pedestrians and motorists. Finally, the Rules Committee passed two items aimed at helping those who have given so much to the community. The first extends discounts for the Department of
Parks, Recreation and Museums to retired auxiliary police, volunteer firefighters and volunteer ambulance corps. The discount would apply to the Nassau County Leisure Pass, entrance to the Old Bethpage Village Restoration and other Nassau County parks fees. The second item extends the Cold War Veterans Exemption. Previously, the exemption expired after 10 years. Now, the exemption is extended for as long as the veteran is the owner of the qualifying property. Additionally, the maximum amount of the exemption was increased from $50,000 to $75,000. All of this legislation will be considered by the full Nassau County Legislature on Monday, March 26.

Now Is The Time To Help Workers Save For Tomorrow For millions of New Yorkers, each passing second means less time to save for retirement. The Secure Choice Savings Program would help small businesses provide employees with an easy retirement savings option and let workers save for tomorrow. Breaking Up The Boys’ Club BY JOSEPH CATRONE Jcatrone@antonmediagroup.com
Breaking news: women have always been a part of rock music, and not just as trailblazers for their own gender. In honor of National Women’s History Month, here’s a look at five acts whose emergence marked a sea change in music, inspiring men and women alike to take note of the shifting atmosphere that these visionaries helped spearhead.
Wanda Jackson:
Seeking to make her mark in a still-developing genre known as rockabilly, Wanda Jackson found herself at odds with 1950s notions of marketability; she initially struggled to secure a record deal for fear that the public wouldn’t buy into a woman making the type of music typically associated with Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins. But eventually, Jackson’s
Arbor Day At Planting Fields The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the Planting Fields Foundation are pleased to announce that the 32nd annual Arbor Day Family Festival is taking place at Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park, Oyster Bay, New York on Saturday, April 28, and Sunday, April 29 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (rain or shine). Since 1987, Planting Fields has commemorated national Arbor Day with a festival of fun-filled activities and entertainment. Arbor Day celebrates the importance of trees and the preservation of our environment. The 2018 Arbor Day Family Festival features exciting children’s crafts, activities, tree climbing for children, plant clinics, and tree plantings with Smokey Bear in which everyone can participate, along with free self-guided visits of Coe Hall. The Festival is a collaborative
remarkable voice was heard, and she shocked audiences by attacking her songs with fierce, rollicking abandon, showcasing a vocal timbre that was sharp, raunchy and gritty in ways distinct from any rock singer before her. Though her roots were pure country, Jackson utilized a reckless snarl—best heard on her definitive rendition of LieberStoller’s “Riot in Cell Block Number 9”—that predated punk rock by almost two decades.
Nico: Remembered mostly for her association with Andy Warhol and her short-lived partnership with The Velvet Underground, the German chanteuse known as Nico didn’t just change the art of singing for women in rock music—she changed singing, period. Possessing a love-hate relationship with the concept of pitch as well as an icy detachment that often approached boredom, Nico shattered all notions that singing had to be beautiful or even emotional. Her work on the 1967 masterpiece The Velvet Underground and Nico, including the droning “All Tomorrow’s Parties,” the charming “I’ll Be Your Mirror” and the coy “Femme Fatale,” set the stage for alternative and indie rock, and “These Days,” written and later recorded by Jackson Browne, is arguably her crowning achievement. Debbie Harry: Far from the
effort between Planting Fields Foundation and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
first woman to emerge out of the burgeoning punk rock movement of the mid-1970s, Harry and her fellow Blondie band members were nonetheless pioneers of the spinoff new wave movement, thanks in no small part to the bandleader’s flexible voice and chameleon-esque persona. Nowhere is Harry’s range more evident than on the 1978 landmark release Parallel Lines.
Her delivery moves seamlessly from urgent (“Hanging on the Telephone”) to spacey (“Fade Away and Radiate”) to desperate (“One Way or Another”), and each song on the album, no matter how musically diverse, is unified by Harry’s charisma and presence.
Hole: If anyone hears about Courtney Love today, it’s often in the gloomy context of her deceased husband Kurt Cobain, which really isn’t fair—the popular myth that she was a leach who did nothing more than contribute to the Nirvana front man’s demise demonstrates martyrdom at its ugliest. The proof is found in the music of Love’s own band, Hole, who, during a time in which male-dominated groups like Silverchair, Live and Bush were peddling watered-down facsimiles of grunge angst, offered songs that hit harder, cut deeper and displayed more lyrical wit than almost any other mid-1990s act could muster. Whether collaborating on songwriting with lead guitarist Eric Erlandson or her friend Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins, Love’s bold candor always made for an intriguing listen. Sleater-Kinney: Listening to classic rock stations would lead the uninitiated to believe that rock ended with Nirvana and Pearl Jam. But for those paying attention, rock continued to thrive well into the 21st century, and this trio from Olympia, WA, is a big reason why. Corin Tucker’s wailing vocals pierce through anything, Carrie Brownstein’s deadpan singing and sublime guitar work provides the perfect counterpoint, and secret weapon Janet Weiss’s forceful rhythms make her one of the best drummers of the past 20 years. After a 10-year hiatus following a near-flawless run of albums, the band returned with 2015’s No Cities To Love and proved they hadn’t lost one bit of their edge.

The need to be right
We at times hold little value for our peace of mind when we assume the need to be right in any given situation. There are times where we will simply need to walk away or back down from an argument simply because it doesn’t serve us to engage. Allow your beliefs and ideals to be enough for you without having to place them on another person. Would you rather be right or would you rather be happy? Hint: Choosing happy will radically shift the level of grace and ease in your life.
Past Grievances
Forgiveness is such a loaded word but so important to practice on a moment to moment basis. Holding onto past disappointments and anger aimed at other people only holds us back from moving forward in our own lives. Take every opportunity to forgive yourself, to forgive those around you and forgive situations that you feel you did not actively choose for your life. Forgiveness doesn’t make those outside factors right but it does bring you

more clarity and contentment in your own life. Who/what are you willing to forgive today?
The “when I have syndrome”
We all fall into this pattern promising ourselves happiness when we achieve the next goal, make more money or have the next child. You know what I’m talking about. The specifics are individual to everyone but most of us experience this roadblock in some form. How unfair it is for us to delay our own happiness and place a condition on it. This outlook robs us of the present moment and places focus on what is to come rather than what is right in front of us. Dwelling in a state of gratitude is one of the biggest gifts we can give ourselves and those around us. How can you practice gratitude for all that you are in this moment? Once we put energy into removing these and other limiting ideas from our daily lives, we clear up space to call in quality experiences that provide us with every opportunity to thrive. A Heartfelt ‘Thank You’ Heart transplant recipient Yvonne Fleming meets Sandra Bass.
Hospital celebrates LI’s first transplant BY STEVE MOSCO
smosco@antonmediagroup.com
After suffering a massive heart attack last year, Yvonne Fleming never imagined finding herself sitting on a panel alongside doctors while feeling the heart she just received via a transplant beating in her chest. But that is exactly where Fleming was on March 15, at Northwell Health’s Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital (SABHH) in Manhasset. The 63-year-old Brooklyn woman became Long Island’s first heart transplant recipient on Feb. 19 and now, less than a month later, Fleming was overwhelmed as she talked about the journey and care she received from the heart professionals. “Before the surgery, I couldn’t see my heart beating; but after I could see my heart go ‘boom-boom,’” said Fleming as she held back tears. “That feeling was so immense and so beautiful, I can’t explain it to you. I am blessed that I got this heart. I’m sorry someone lost their life, but I am going to honor this heart, I’m going to respect this heart.” Fleming thanked her doctors for seeing her through from beginning to the end—or better yet, the start, of her new life. Joining Fleming were Gerin Stevens, MD, cardiac transplantation
Yvonne Fleming as she was led into the operating room at SABHH; Syed Hussain, MD, lead heart procurement surgeon at SABHH; and Brian Lima, MD, director, heart transplantation surgery at SABHH. The doctors discussed the step-bystep process of evaluating a patient for potential transplantation before finding the heart, obtaining it and delivering it to the operating room. “It takes a true team effort,” said Stevens, who first met Fleming at Northwell’s Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. “When we realized Yvonne was a candidate, I told her, ‘you and I need to talk,’ and told her about the life-saving strategies at the Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital. Yvonne is a
champ. She worked with all of us with a smile on her face everyday.” Lima said that the team was very lucky to have a perfect match for Fleming so early in the process. “We had two teams working in parallel. The donor team which provides the final confirmation that the heart is suitable. And on the recipient side, there are some issues we deal with related to prior heart surgeries. But once [the transplant is confirmed] we have a tight time line. We want to have the heart out of the body and into the new body in under four hours. The coordination has to be literally down to the second.”
And the doctor tasked with making sure the heart was not only viable, but that it was delivered within that fourhour window, was Hussain. “The key words they want to hear is “the heart’s good.” So when I said those words, the goal was to make the time as short as possible,” said Hussain. “I got there and the whole team was waiting for me. Now it’s a matter of life—and time for the heart’s journey back home.” The heart’s journey to Yvonne Fleming is not only a first on the island, but it is truly a life-changing moment for the recipient. Aside from a new lease on life, Fleming now has a new mission: to recruit donors and extol the virtues of the heart hospital. “You don’t have a hospital, you have a family of people who love what they do,” Fleming said to Sandra Bass, who was seated in the front row. “I’m going to sign up as many people as I can to be donors. I want to talk to former recipients, I want to talk to young people and be a part of life. Tomorrow is not promised, so if you can help somebody, then help somebody. I’m going to make this hospital very proud. Thank you from the bottom of my heart—no, not the bottom—thank you from the top of my heart, thank you from my whole heart.”

Traci Conway Clinton and Jacklin Soleimani of Douglas Elliman real estate are the exclusive sales and marketing agents for The Manhasset Glen II project, located on a private road on a quaint private cul de sac in the sought after village of Plandome. Both agents are proud and honored to represent Lalazarian development in launching these fine homes to the market this spring. “When you enter into the private road, you feel and appreciate their vision, passion and fine execution of bringing this incredible luxury development to Plandome,” said

As Honorees at the recent 17th Annual Long Island Go Red for Women Luncheon, the Women of SterlingRisk raised more than $63,000 for the American Heart Association and its efforts to prevent heart disease and stroke. The announcement was made by SterlingRisk Chief Operating Officer Marci Waterman, who was among the nine Honorees. “I couldn’t be more proud of my fellow Honorees and colleagues at SterlingRisk who worked so hard to make sure we met and surpassed our fundraising goal,” said Waterman. “We took the responsibility very seriously, turning to friends, family, business associates, carrier partners, and others to help us raise these crucial funds. Along the way we focused a majority of our community service work on the Go Red initiative, hosting everything from walkathons and penny wars to raffles and potluck days. Each SterlingRisk Honoree also created her own fundraising page, raising thousands of additional dollars. Equally important, the experience enabled us to educate people on heart disease and stroke. I am confident our efforts will make a real difference and inspire everyone to make healthier choices in their lives.” Headquartered in Woodbury, SterlingRisk Insurance has a long history of supporting health-related education and causes. Additionally, SterlingRisk undertakes significant efforts to engage its own employees in being more mindful of their health and wellness. The SterlingRisk women named as Go Red

Building Intimacy In Relationships: Creating Closeness Quickly My previous article focused on ways to get closer to your partner over a long period of time through communication, planning, and sharing. I want to shift the focus a bit and discuss a way to generate closeness quickly- through the use of closeness-generating questions. These are helpful if you want to get to know another person at a deeper level in a relatively short period of time. The Aron et al. (1997) Experiment You may have first heard about Aron, Melinat, Aron, Vallone, and Bator’s (1997) famous study in a viral social media article that circulated right before Valentine’s Day in 2015. Writer and teacher, Mandy Len Catron put the famous 36 questions to “make you fall in love” to the test by standing on a bridge with an acquaintance of hers. Over the course of two hours, Ms. Catron felt increasing intimacy with her partner, and as it turns out, is still with him. A common misconception is that the goal of the original study was to create a long-lasting relationship between the individuals involved. Thus,
LOVE LESSONS Marisa T. Cohen, PhD many articles and smartphone apps incorrectly stated that the questions will make you fall in love. Rather, the purpose of the original study was to create a temporary feeling of interpersonal closeness. The Aron et al. (1997) experiment was comprised of a series of smaller studies, the first of which I will briefly explain here. In this study, individuals were put into pairs and were given an envelope and told that they would be participating in a relationship building exercise. They were either to complete tasks that involved self-disclosure or small talk. An example of a small-talk question is, “If you could invent a new flavor of ice cream, what would it be?” An example of a closeness-generating
questions is, “If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about yourself, your life, the future, or anything else, what would you want to know?” As you can see, the closeness-generating question requires you to dig deep to come up with an answer and potentially expose some truths about yourself when sharing. Results demonstrated that those in the self-disclosure group reported feeling closer to their partners than those in the small talk condition. What is interesting is that these studies produced felt closeness after only 45 minutes. The closeness may be comparable to people who get to know one another over time. Basically, people created an intimate connection quickly. They were even able to build this closeness without shared history. So how does this study benefit you? Some of the questions designed for the experiment may be too intense or off-putting on a first date such as, “Do you have a secret hunch about how you will die?” However, other questions are great as ice breakers and as a way to get to know your date on a deeper, more intimate level.
25A
Below are a few of the closeness-generating questions from Aron et al.’s (1997) study. 1. G iven the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest? 2. W ould you like to be famous? In what way? 3. W hat would constitute a “perfect” day for you? 4. N ame three things you and your partner appear to have in common. 5. F or what in your life do you feel most grateful? Reference: Aron, A., Melinat, E., Aron, E. N., Vallone, R. D., & Bator, R. J. (1997). Shake Shack
high grease factor, leaving me with a heavy, “dirty” feeling that I just wanted to sleep off for a few hours. And try as I might, I cannot get into the crinkle-cut fries. They taste like they are straight from the grocery store freezer. Also, for a place that has “shake” in its name, you would think the shakes would be far more memorable. www. shakeshack.com BurgerFi Woodbury With two Long Island locations, BurgerFi rode the burger fad created during the peak burger-joint explosion. This particular eatery landed pretty much exactly where I thought it would—a mere notch below fast-casual mainstay, Shake Shack. The standard BurgerFi cheeseburger comes as a double natural Angus burger with American cheese, lettuce tomato and BurgerFi sauce on a potato bun, which, as mentioned earlier, is the best bun for burgers. The potato roll is soft and stays strong throughout the burger’s life, while the meat itself was decently juicy with a favorable griddle-induced crust along the interior. The BurgerFi sauce was in-line with all the other signature sauces offered these days, rounding out a burger that could best be described as “good.”
However, BurgerFi loses most of its points with its French fries, which lacked integrity and sadly surpassed an acceptable grease factor. The shake was a win, though—better than most, with the thickest straw, but not nearly enough to push BurgerFi any higher. www.burgerfi.com
The Worst
Smashburger New Hyde Park The only way I can possibly describe my experience at Smashburger is with two simple words: immediately regrettable. And to understand why, you need only to look at the establishment’s name. They literally “smash” the burger with an apparatus onto the grill. A violent treatment that no burger deserves, the “smashing” is supposed to sear the burger and lock in the juices. But in fact, it does just the opposite. The burger is rendered dry and lifeless, yet somehow simultaneously sopping with grease. It is the kind of burger that requires the eater to shower after consuming, and not in a good way. The Classic Smash includes American cheese, lettuce, tomato, what seems like an entire onion, and pickles on an egg bun. Any self-respecting burger lover, if they choose to endure this experience, would quit after four bites, leaving in shame and disgust. As for the fries and shake, instantly forgettable items that deserve pity, as they are unwitting accomplices to Smashburger’s food crimes. www.smashburger.com

over-the-top presentations of lavish gardens that showcase millions of live flowers, plants and trees from around the globe. Taking root in unexpected settings such as store countertops, windows, and specially-designed architecture, including grand bridges, columns and topiaries, this year, it will be like stepping into a fairytale as the themed celebration puts a twist on classic fables, creating a world of personified flora and fauna, princesses, evil queens, fairy godmothers and noble knights that lead to a wondrous journey. Upon entering the show, visitors can choose their own adventure, based on how they begin their trip through the floral fantasy land. From a towering castle where the princess resides to a meadow of brightly colored flowers, an enchanted forest and lush lagoon; spectators will play a part in spring’s triumph over a seemingly eternal winter.

Between The Pipes With Kelly Hrudey BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO dgiLderuBio@antonmediagroup.com
K
elly Hrudey is best known for the 15 years he played goal in the National Hockey League. Drafted by the New York Islanders in 1980, Hrudey was traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 1989, where he spent the next eight years that included a memorable Stanley Cup Finals run in 1993 that found the Kings eventually falling to the Montreal Canadians, 4-1. Hrudey finished his career with the San Jose Sharks in 1998 and is currently an analyst for Hockey Night in Canada and a color commentator for the Calgary Flames. All of this and more are some of what you’ll find in Calling the Shots, the recent book the Edmonton native recently wrote with co-author Kirstie McLellan
Day. Having been asked to work on a memoir quite a number of times over the past 20 years, Hrudey penned a few chapters during the 2012-13 lockout, which made him realize, “I’m not a very good writer.” McLellan Day, who has previously worked on books with former players Theo Fleury and Bob Probert, met with Hrudey and convinced him to return to this project. Multiple meetings in person and on the phone with his writing partner made for this being both a rewarding and moving experience. “The most difficult part was writing about some of the conflict. It’s not a comfortable thing to write about, but something you have to do if you’re going to be honest. In my experience, I started in the National Hockey League in 1983 and I was drafted in 1980, so
