In The Beginning: 2016 Inductee Debuts

BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO DGILDERUBIO@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

Five performing artists and producer Bert Berns will be getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 8. The general consensus is that four of the five are long overdue for this honor while the fifth inductee ock On! R (N.W.A.), has sparked heated debate about whether or not they should go into a hall of fame dedicated to rock and roll (I say yes by virtue of their impact on music and the fact that the genre is ever-evolving as each year passes). That said, each honoree’s debut serves as an intriguing entry point for both the novice and diehard fan.

1. Steve Miller Band—Children of the Future (Capitol) 1968

The road to being a classic rock mainstay started with this slab of psychedelic blues by way of London’s Olympia Studios and the steady hand of storied producer Glyn Johns. Aside from the airy ruminating of “Baby’s Callin’ Me Home” by bandmate Boz Scaggs, the remainder of Steve Miller’s debut is self-penned and features gems like the epic organ workout that is “In My First Mind” and harp-soaked shuffle “Fanny Mae.”

2. Chicago— Chicago Transit Authority (Columbia) 1969

Taking the fusion of jazz and rock pioneered by The Blues Project and Blood, Sweat and Tears, Chicago kicked off

its future commercial success with this double album set that encompasses soaring soul (“Beginnings”), epic brass fanfare (“Questions 67 and 68”), an ambitious and melodic 15-minute jam overflowing with striking time changes (“Liberation”) and a kick-ass Spencer Davis Group cover (“I’m a Man”).

3. Deep Purple—Shades of Deep Purple (Tetragammaton) 1968 Before Deep Purple became hard rock gods, the first line-up featured vocalist Rod Evans (succeeded by Ian Gillan) and bassist Nick Simper (succeeded by Roger Glover) along with fellow founding members Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord and Ian Paice. This founding fivesome mixed in originals with covers that included The Beatles (“Help!”) and Joe South (the Top 5 hit “Hush.”)

4. N.W.A.— Straight Outta Compton (Ruthless/Priority) 1988

A primary force that helped launch the gangsta rap genre for better or worse, N.W.A.’s debut reflected inner city violence and nihilism in Compton and South Central Los Angeles mixed in with liberal doses of macho swagger and profane defiance of law enforcement over stripped-down production.

5. Cheap Trick— Cheap Trick (Epic) 1977

This perfect power-pop platter rages with fat hooks, Beatlesque harmonies and hard-hitting guitar riffs. Kicking off with the glitter-rock stomper “ELO Kiddies,” other earworms include the moody “Mandocello,” furious “Hot Love” and achingly pleading “Oh, Candy.” For more on the 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, see page 8A.

Dion: Honky Tonk Urban Cowboy

F

or most people, the name Dion DiMucci brings to mind doo-wop and oldies music thanks to hits like “I Wonder Why,” “A Teenager in Love,” “Ruby Baby” and “Runaround Sue” that he had with and without his group, The Belmonts. But in reality, the Bronx native has always had a deep and abiding love for roots music, a self-described obsession for him that kicked in the first time he heard it on the radio in his mother’s kitchen back when he was about 11. This love for country music and the blues not only manifested itself in

recent projects like Son of Skip James, Bronx in Blue and the brand-new New York Is My Home, but when Dion was recording material for Columbia Records back in the 1960s that wound up being mostly unreleased. While some of those sessions wound up resurfacing on the 1997 2-CD compilation The Road I’m On: A Retrospective, a 5-CD set called Kicking Child mostly made up Dion recording of this kind of in the 1960s material remains unreleased to this day. The following are major influences that shaped Dion’s musical approach be it in the worlds of pop or otherwise.

“[Hank Williams] seemed like he was so committed—spiritually, mentally, physically, emotionally. He’d grab on to the words with his mouth and rip them off at the end. He dug in and the rhythm would just plug along and this guy would just drill. He was like a rivet gun—it just resonated with me. And, the other thing is that he taught me how to live. He had an album out called Luke the Drifter and he did a song called ‘The Funeral’ about a young black kid who died. He did a song called ‘Pictures From Life’s Other Side.’ He did songs about relationships. I listened and was enthralled by the stories. I learned how to live through listening to those songs—they were very honest. Maybe he didn’t know how to live—he didn’t make it out, but he was honest in his music.”

Radio DJ Don Larkin “There was this radio station that just happened to be on in my Bronx neighborhood and I remember my mother was making sauce and the radio was on in the back room and I heard ‘Honky Tonky Blues.’ I must have been 10 or 11-years-old and I was like, ‘What the hell is that?’ Don Larkin was an older guy who came back from the Army and liked country music. He had a country music show that broadcast out of Newark. I wasn’t even a teenager and I used to run home from school just to catch the last half hour of the Don Larkin Show. By that time, my father had borrowed our landlady’s tape recorder and I would record the last half hour of the show. He would play singers like Hank Williams, Carl Smith and Faron Young here and there. I would have all these songs I could learn because I knew three chords and I just loved it.”

“I wanted to communicate like Hank Williams and roll like Jimmy Reed. He just rolled, which rock and roll doesn’t do much anymore. I have a lot of that in my shuffles. But Jimmy Reed rolled and he knew how to groove. And these guys didn’t know how to do anything wrong. They didn’t even try...they just did it. It was just right out there—this is me.” Dion will be appearing on April 9, with Ronnie Spector at Kings Theatre, 1027 Flatbush Ave., Brooklyn. * Ranked #1 Individual Broker in 2015 for sales volume among all Douglas Elliman Real Estate Agents on the North Shore.

Though the real estate market in recent times has seemed to be almost as frenzied and variable as the stock market, I take a long-range view. I believe in property as a long-term investment and one that will always appreciate in value. Taking a long-range view with my customers and clients has proved equally rewarding. I take it as my personal challenge to master the ever-evolving economics of real estate for every possible situation in life. It is so great to see all phases come in to play: young families buying their first homes; others trading up; those who now find their “nests” empty looking to downsize, and others looking perhaps to invest in a second home or income property. Being a trusted advisor is the role I appreciate most.

Into The Fire

ungry eaters looking to satisfy a fix for fire-kissed meat should follow their nose to Mineola’s Churrasqueira Bairrada, at Jericho Turnpike and Willis Avenue. Around the corner at the restaurant’s rear entrance, the robust aroma of wood-charcoal fueled flames entice, enrapture and enliven the senses—to the point where only succulence will satiate. The main draw to this authentic Portuguese restaurant is the all-you-can-eat Rodizio—a carnivore’s dream that sends skewers around the eatery slicing a parade of primal, including sirloin, bacon-wrapped turkey, spare ribs, short ribs, pork loin, chicken drumsticks, tender beef cubes and a dizzying array of fresh sausages. The march of meats only stops when the eater, testing the limits of their waistband, waves the white flag in full surrender. All the while, Bairrada provides delectable side dishes, including the unmatched, homemade

potato chips from the authentic briquette-fired grill. The often long weekend wait time for a table will be well worth it when you are finally rolled out of the restaurant. Although the Rodizio is Bairrada’s main draw, the restaurant’s regular menu is just as hearty and packed with an intense selection of entrées. The Frango de Churrasco, or grilled chicken, offers the distinct flavor of fire-roasted bird. The whole chicken is butterflied open and marinated in Bairrada’s proprietary blend that includes garlic and butter. The chicken spins on a rotating spit, absorbing all that love from the fire. The result is juicy meat wrapped in crisp skin. For eaters looking for a variety of meats in one dish, look no further than the Espetada Mista, or grilled mixed shish kabob. This lineup features perfectly medium-rare beef cubes, pork medallions and a mix of sausages, along with peppers, onions and grilled vegetables. Other meat dishes worth reaching for are the Costela de Porco, or grilled spare ribs, and that event of a dish, the Leitao Bairrada, a suckling pig prepared Bairrada style. Only served on the weekends, this dish is like manna from heaven. Bairrada goes beyond the land and also pulls delectable fare from the sea. The Camarao ao alho, or garlic shrimp, is wonderfully pungent and features tantalizing shrimp swimming in a

heady garlic butter sauce. For eaters who like their foods from head to fish tail, Bairrada boasts a grilled whole Bronzini. Other seafood options include grilled salmon, swordfish and Camarao Tigre, or grilled tiger shrimp. Bringing all of these dishes together is Bairrada’s housemade, fierce hot sauce. Available for purchase on the restaurant’s website, Mr. Rodizio’s Hot Sauce is a screaming concoction of exotic peppers with chunky seeds

swimming in devilish hot oil. The sauce is made with piri piri, or African bird’s eye chili, and should be applied with caution. After consuming all that meat, fish and fire, it is wise to close the meal with dessert—if only to take the edge off. Bairrada offers a caramel custard flan, chocolate mousse and rice pudding, but the most popular dessert is the Natasdo-Ceu, or Heavenly Whites. The typical Portuguese dessert layers heavy cream, sugar and egg whites with crushed, vanilla-flavored biscuits, topped with whipped cream. This luscious dessert is the perfect pillow to rest upon at the end of Bairrada’s unbridled cuisine. Outer Space Is Not The Limit Everywhere he goes, crowds gather to meet the beloved Buzz Aldrin. He is a world-class living legend, a larger-than-life figurehead, the best known of a generation of astronauts whose achievements surged in just a few years from first man in space to first men on the moon. He pauses to reflect and share what he has learned from the vantage point not only of outer space, but also of time in his new book, No Dream Is Too High: Life Lessons from a Man Who Walked on the Moon. “Always keep some exciting new adventure on your bucket list,” Aldrin wrote. “I’m living proof that no dream is too high!” Aldrin, best known for his Apollo 11 moonwalk in 1969, holds a doctoral degree in astronautics and, at age 86, continues to wield influence as an international advocate of space science and planetary exploration. In No Dream Is Too High, Aldrin reflects on the wisdom, principles and anecdotes he’s gathered through his event-filled life in this inspiring guide-to-life for the next generation, such as:

THE SPORTS DESK

NHL Playoff Preview 1 Metropolitan Mania

The New York Rangers and New York Islanders haven’t faced off in the playoffs since 1994, when the Islanders were nothing more than a doormat to the Stanley Cup-bound, surging Rangers, who won the series 4-0. Much has changed in the 20-plus years since that match up, with the Islanders building a solid core of young talent and jettisoning Nassau Coliseum for Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, while the Rangers have competed steadily in the post-lockout NHL. But one factor remains true: the fans of these two franchises truly hate each other and there could be just as much—if not more—animosity in the stands as on the ice.

2 Keystone Clash Depending on how the final weeks of the season play out, the two Pennsylvania clubs could meet in the post season. This rivalry began when both teams were introduced during the 1967 expansion and has strengthened with the teams meeting in the Stanley Cup Playoffs three of the past eight seasons. The most recent series came in the 2012 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, when the Flyers stunned the hockey world and defeated the championship-favored Penguins in six games. The teams combined for 45 goals in the first four games of the match up and amassed 309 penalty minutes during the fight-filled series.

3 California Dreamin’ The NHL’s three Golden State teams—Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks and San Joe Sharks—have already punched their tickets to

the postseason, dominating the Pacific division since day one. Having all three California teams take the ice in one postseason might not seem like a big deal, but it is a recent phenomenon—the first time it happened was in 2011. History aside, the West Coast seeing this kind of representation on hockey’s biggest stage can only be good for the sport and it surely has Commissioner Gary Bettman licking his chops at the thought of furthering his expansion plans.

4 Canada Dry Oh, Canada. The last time no teams from our friends to the north made the playoffs was 1970 and the prospects for glory this season are all but faded away. Edmonton, Vancouver, Calgary and Winnipeg all boast the worst records in the West and Toronto lays claim to the basement in the East, leaving Montreal and Ottawa to fight the mediocre fight for a near .500 record. But rather than think about that depressing stat, Canadians should instead reminisce about native son Bobby Orr’s famous overtime winner in the 1970 Stanley Cup Final, which he won with the Boston Bruins. You know what, never mind.

5 Detroit Shock City The Detroit Red Wings, a franchise that has advanced to the postseason for 24 consecutive seasons, is dangerously close to ditching the playoff beard in favor of fresh golf attire for the first time since the 1989-90 season. If the streak were to end this season, every hockey fan, no matter their allegiance, must tip their cap to the Motor City team. To put this streak in perspective, the New York Rangers and New York Islanders have both had 13 coaches come and go since the 1990 season. In that time period, the Wings won their division 14 times and the Stanley Cup four times.
