Yesterday And Today With Santana

T

he last time that the classic Santana lineup that featured guitarists Carlos Santana and Neal Schon, keyboardist/vocalist Gregg Rolie, percussionist Michael Carabello and drummer Michael Shrieve played together was back in 1973. At the time, Richard Milhous Nixon was president, Motorola put the first handheld mobile phone on the market, The Godfather won the Best Picture Oscar and gas cost 55 cents a gallon. Fast forward 43 years later and President Barack Obama is finishing up his second term, Apple is getting ready to release the iPhone 7, Spotlight nailed the Best Picture Oscar, gas is about $2.16 a gallon and the Santana quintet has reunited for a brand new project called Santana IV. And while Carlos Santana has recorded 23 studio albums with different incarnations of Santana, below are the ones that set the table for these five crucial members to return in 2016.

Santana (Columbia)

The self-titled debut that introduced Santana to the world featured the hit “Evil Ways,” which was originally on a 1967 album, Bobo Motion, by jazz percussionist Willie Bobo. One of the most intriguing aspects of these recording sessions is how the band showcased the integral part percussion played in the group’s overall sound, thanks to a pounding reading of the Babatunde Olatunji instrumental “Jin-go-loba” from his 1959 debut Drums of Passion that was renamed “Jingo” and the original “Soul Sacrifice,” whose live version became a Woodstock highlight. The 2004 Legacy reissue also contains an extra disc with six bonus cuts (including a cover of Bobo’s “Fried Neckbones”) and Santana’s Aug. 16, 1969 set the band played at Woodstock that same year.

Fresh off its triumph at Woodstock, Santana went on to record a 1970 sophomore bow that became a cornerstone of their canon, a classic rock and counterculture staple and was later deemed “culturally, historically, or artistically relevant” by the National Recording Registry this year. Punctuated by Mati Klarwein’s painting “Annunciation” doubling as a provocative album cover, this outing features stellar covers of Fleetwood Mac (“Black Magic Woman”), Gabor Szabo (“Gypsy Queen”) and Tito Puente (“Oye Como Va”). Worthy deeper cuts include the unrelenting instrumental “Incident at Neshabur” and its sublimely gorgeous sister “Samba Pa Ti.” The 1998 reissue contains a 12-track bonus disc that closes out with three live cuts recorded at London’s Royal Albert Hall on April 14, 1970.

Santana III (Columbia)

This 1971 outing was the first to showcase a then-17-year-old Neal Schon on guitar. He quickly proved himself on this nine-song collection, which features radio staples “Everybody’s Everything,” a locomotive rumba spiked by the teen’s fiery solo and “No One To Depend On,” a Latin shuffle punctuated by the call and response of both guitarists and yet another Schon solo. Elsewhere, there are explosive readings of jazz great Gene Ammons’ “Jungle Strut” and a return to the Tito Puente songbook via a horn-soaked romp cover of “Para los Rumberos.” The 2006 Legacy reissue includes four bonus tracks (including the single version of “No One To Depend On”) and a bonus disc containing a July 4, 1971 concert recorded at the Fillmore West. IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Tommy Tune

At The Landmark

T

ommy Tune will be performing in his one-man show, Taps, Tunes & Tall Tales, at the Landmark on Main in Port Washington on Friday, April 15, at 8 p.m. Tune is accompanied in the show by his music director of nearly four decades, Michael Biagi, on piano. The show includes Tune’s personal renditions of standards by Irving Berlin, Burt Bacharach, Carole King, Green Day, Gershwin and more. Taps, Tunes & Tall Tales is autobiographical and takes guests through his arrival in New York City from Texas as a young kid with big dreams through all of his roles on Broadway and in movies. Tune takes the stage and dances, sings and tells tales about his journey to become a Broadway icon. “I love doing direct address with audiences,” said Tune. “I’m at a time in my career where I like to stop and take stock of where I’ve been. This is an arc of 55 years in show business,

beginning with my first day in New York.” Tune stands 6’6” tall and dazzles in this show with his larger-than-life personality and phenomenal dancing. The years have been kind to him and he has an ageless stage presence that envelops the audience. You’ll leave the show feeling as though you spent the evening in the company of a great friend. Tune is one of Broadway’s most accomplished director-choreographers and is the winner of 10 Tony Awards. He won his first Tony Award in 1974, and his most recent in 2015. When asked if receiving his latest Tony feels as good as the first, Tune said, “The first Tony was the best. The first one is like your first love, you never forget it.” Tune said the most recent Tony was a great honor, though. “You have to enjoy whatever is going on in the moment. I try to live in the moment. It makes for a happy life.”

In addition to the Tony Awards, Tune has won the National Medal of Arts, eight Drama Desk Awards, three Astaire Awards, and multiple Life Time Achievement Awards including the Society of Directors and the Choreographers’ George Abbott Award. Tune is the recipient of the National Medal of Arts, the highest honor for artistic achievement given by the President of the United States. and he has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Tune’s prolific career on Broadway includes Nine, Grand Hotel, A Joyful

Kosher Strong K

osher delis have all but disappeared from the Long Island landscape, with only a handful preserving the old world culinary tenets established generations ago. But Lido Kosher Deli remains. For nearly 60 years—and 30 of those years with owner Wally Goetz at the helm—Lido has churned out homemade, Jewish comfort food like matzo ball soup, heaps of juicy pastrami, knishes, latkas, kasha varnishkes and hot dogs that snap with each bite. It is a time-tested standard of service, dating back to the Bronx in the 1930s. “Grandpa Hugo started it all on Jerome Avenue in the Bronx. It was a little Kosher butcher store,” said Goetz, who lives in Lido Kosher’s surrounding Long Beach community. “Three generations later, we still offer old fashioned Jewish soul food that you really can’t get anywhere else.” Lido Kosher is an essential dining adventure—a must-try destination as much for its family-friendly setting as for its food. The eatery’s menu overflows with dinner specials like Roumanian tenderloin, roasted spring chicken, Hungarian beef goulash and tongue polonaise; combination sandwiches like the Super

Meanwhile, Lido’s sliced brisket is otherworldly in its lusciousness, with fat generously marbled throughout the meat Goetz said Bonni’s Best is one of Lido’s most popular sandwiches—the pastrami is succulent, with the perfect percentage of fat providing a

The sweet potato fries are the perfect side dish for any meal and are cut in such a way that some are creamy, while others are crunchy. A trip to Lido Kosher wouldn’t be complete without sampling the deli’s famous knishes. Available as both the square, Coney Island style and in-house prepared baked variety, the knishes are warm, creamy and comforting. Goetz offers five versions of the baked knish, including classic potato, kasha, spinach, vegetable and even apple. Then there’s Goetz’s hush puppy, featuring the best hot dog you’ll ever have wrapped in a baked knish. Of course, Goetz offers the all-time champion of Jewish comfort food, matzo ball soup—and Lido Kosher stirs up fresh pots of this ancient cure every single day. The broth is made with freshly roasted chicken, with dark meat

providing that deep poultry flavor crucial to the soup. The matzo ball, heavenly dense and comforting, soaks up all that love and sends it straight to the heart of the eater’s stomach. With full-service dining, free delivery, a take out counter and catering, every customer that walks into the deli is immediately treated like family—just as they would have been treated by Grandpa Hugo all those years ago. n the last two years, Karla Cavalli has found herself walking with elephants in Africa, climbing a coconut tree in the Philippines and herding sheep in New Zealand. The Mineola native’s global adventures are hitting small screens everywhere, through her new gig as host of Travel Channel’s Planet Primetime. Planet Primetime seeks to explore cultures through the shows people watch and are entertained by. On the show, Cavalli explores hands-on the weird, funny, sweet and wild shows that are popular in countries across the globe. As an active participant, Cavalli gets to see firsthand what makes people around the world laugh, cry and freak out. “A lot of hosts travel and learn

about cultures as they’re sitting at a table eating a specific dish,” Cavalli said. “I looked at it through TV.” As host, Cavalli got the privilege of starring in popular international TV shows, as well as appearing on game shows and reality shows with little to no advanced notice of what she would be doing. She received warm receptions from the studios and hosts overseas, who sometimes made up roles and parts, especially for her. She ate blowfish on a morning show in Japan, was kicked in the face while milking a sheep for a Turkish reality show and recited a poem in ancient Arabic for a United Arab Emirates program. Cavalli said she is normally pretty bold and daring, but it took an extra dose of “Kodak courage” to do some of the crazy things a show asked her to. “When I first signed up, I didn’t know how wild and crazy it would be. One of Karla Cavalli’s most memorable experiences was on the Indian show Home Minister.

“Being welcomed by these other women by a show that celebrated them was a really moving, touching memory for me,” Cavalli said. “I was really blessed to have that experience. We didn’t speak the same language but it was women supporting women and I was really moved by that.” Through hosting, Cavalli has learned just how different TV, and in turn, the people, are in other countries. The biggest surprise for her was seeing how little other countries cared about reality TV, but rather, many of them focused on educating people in the respective issues important in each country. “I think that’s really beautiful,” Cavalli said. “I think we do that here too, but it’s hidden sometimes. We just want to watch so much of these celebrities’ lives. A lot of our educational programming gets overshadowed by other stuff.” Cavalli is carving out a niche for herself, not only in the nature of her show, but as a female host in an industry dominated by men. “It’s a hard business to scramble your way through, particularly in the travel world where so many male hosts do well and succeed,” Cavalli said. “But when I got this job, I wanted to prove that I could go out and perform on thousands of different stages. It was about showing that an American woman could host a show as good as a man, if not better. And not just on my show, but so many others around the world.” Planet Primetime airs Saturdays at 9 and 9:30 a.m. on the Travel Channel and is also available on iTunes. on, the Kodak courage kicks in,” Cavalli said. “Some things that were challenging I was up for, other things I decided to challenge myself to try and do it. Some things I was awful at, like stand-up comedy in Colombia, but other things like ice skating in Russia was one of my greatest accomplishments.” Other than being away from her family, a major obstacle of being on the shows was the language barrier. Many times Cavalli had to learn the language the night before filming, which was especially exhausting after long flights and dealing with jet lag. “In India, I had to perform on a crime drama type of show and had to learn 13 lines of Hindi overnight. That Karla happened in Turkey and Cavalli Colombia too,” Cavalli said. “I would write a lot of the lyrics or script on my hand and would sneak a look. If you watch carefully, you can see me glancing down.” The show took her to 13 different countries over the course of a year and a half, providing her with immeasurable memories and experiences. As an animal lover, Cavalli said one of the highlights of her trip was getting to walk with rescued elephants at a reserve in South Africa. She also describes a special moment in India, while on a show called Home Minister, a game show that celebrates housewives and families. The women on the show warmly welcomed her, gifting her with a sari and blessing her with a traditional Hindu blessing. As a newlywed away from her husband on their one-year anniversary, as well as a pioneer for women in a male-dominated industry, she was blown away by their kindness and support.

JFAUCI@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

he New York Mets may have found their next “It Guy” in Michael Conforto. The 23-yearold left fielder is set to enter his first full-season with the Mets after last year’s whirlwind trip to the playoffs and World Series after his major league debut during a mid-summer call up from the minors. Conforto shows extreme potential to be an everyday, impact player. And after the Mets season opener against the Royals last week, Conforto may be seeing some more playing time.

LIW: What was it like to get the call to join the Mets last season? Conforto: It was a great experience. I have a lot of really good teammates and great coaches. I took some things from a lot of different people, just learning more about hitting, in general the game of baseball. I soaked it in a little bit and I think it had a big impact on me late in the year. LIW: Take me through your day as a player. Conforto: My days in spring training are a little bit different than during the season, but I get up, have some breakfast when I get to the field, maybe jump in the hot tub to get warm, get in the cage and take a few swings…then it’s kind of all scheduled out from there. LIW: What’s your diet like? Conforto: My diet pretty much consists of what’s provided for us there. In the morning, it’s eggs, bacon, and a little bit of potatoes. I’ll have some greens with lunch, usually chicken breast is in there. LIW: What do you credit your successful 2015 season to? Conforto: There’s not one specific thing, but I’d say it’s just being ready when the opportunity was there. That was huge for this past year when some hype was coming around my name and I was kind of in the conversation of getting called up. Just making sure I was prepared and ready. I took advantage of the opportunity and then just being able to focus, lock in, and adapt when I needed to.

LIW: Who was your favorite player growing up? Conforto: I would have to say Ken Griffey Jr. He was only in Seattle for a while when I was growing up, but the legacy he left…he was always one of my favorites being a guy who hit home runs. He was a great player. LIW: What was it like to be on the World Series stage? Conforto: It was the most exciting experience of my life. It was something I have always dreamed of, so I was very fortunate to be a part of it and actually play and have an impact and try to help our team win. There’s no other way to say it…it’s just the best four or five days of my life. LIW: What did you take away from the World Series? Conforto: I think I learned, especially towards the end of the season, you’re never out of a game, you never have a game locked up. I think the Royals showed us that late in the game, you can come back and you can finish off a game. I know they kind of put us on our heels at times, so that’s something we’ll take into this year. LIW: What are you looking forward to this season? Conforto: I’m excited to know where I’m going to be. Just the opportunity to get back to the World Series and help this team through the entire season and see what we can do as far as putting ourselves in the best position to get back there.

152080 C

(Photos by New York Mets)

LIW: What adjustments did you have to make coming up from the minor leagues? Conforto: I had to get a little closer to the plate, make sure I was squared up to the pitcher a little bit more. The pitchers, they

change their approach quicker than they do in the minor leagues. I think that goes with having more resources available in the majors as well. They can see my at-bats, they can see what I’m not hitting well, so I have to be able to change with the way that they’re throwing.
