A Star-Crossed Love Ashley Park embodies Shakespeare’s Juliet as Tuptim in The King and I

BY JENNIFER FAUCI JFAUCI@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM

A

true star takes the form of many talents: singing, acting, dancing and most importantly, the ability to transport an audience into a new world. At only 24-years-old, Ashley Park touches audiences every night with her angelic voice as she takes the stage as Tuptim in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The King and I at Lincoln Center Theatre. Her stage presence and performance background has earned her a rightful place next to renowned Broadway actress Kelli O’Hara, who plays Anna Leonowens, and Ken Watanabe, who plays the King of Siam. Park hails from the University of Michigan, where she received her BFA in musical theater. After graduating in 2013, she moved to New York City and made her Broadway debut in Mamma Mia!, before going on tour originating the role of stepsister Gabrielle in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella. She auditioned for the role of Tuptim, a young slave girl gifted from the King of Burma to the King of Siam to be one of his many wives. Tuptim arrives escorted by Lun Tha, whom she is secretly in love with. Park was offered the role right on the spot. “I actually was offered the role in the room by our director, Bartlett Sher, and the entire Lincoln Center team and representatives of the Rodgers & Hammerstein organization,” she said. “It was very surreal.” Starring in The King and I has of course, been a dream come true for Park. She performs in eight shows per week and has learned a

great deal more about performing. “I have learned so very much about my craft, my industry, and myself,” she said. “Telling a timeless story on one of the world’s most epic stages, singing this sweeping score with a 29-piece orchestra, with a cast of 50 other remarkable storytellers is beyond a blessing.” And Park truly does have the voice of an angel. To maintain healthy vocals, Park has developed a pre-show routine that she

conducts religiously, involving a lot of steaming, tea lemon juice, Grether’s pastilles and gargling with warm saltwater and apple cider vinegar. “Because my role has intense vocal demands, with the soprano ballads and narrating a 17-minute ballet and enduring a beating scene, I’ve come to prioritize sleep and vocal rest throughout the day as well in order to allow my instrument to be at full capacity for our audiences,” said Park.

The young performer had the difficult role of playing a slave girl, which Park prepared for very seriously. “Bartlett Sher led us through a thorough and explorative rehearsal process. In fact, we began with a few days completely devoted to table work, where we read through the script in depth with the entire cast and had discussions and listened to lectures by professionals with background information,” she said on learning about Tuptim. “Personally, I read Margaret Landon’s Anna and the King of Siam, which is the novel that the musical is based on. I got insight into the world of Tuptim by reading that and other biographies of Anna Leonowens.” Tuptim and Lun Tha’s relationship is reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet’s as young love’s determination to overcome all obstacles results in the execution of Lun Tha, and a grieving Tuptim, who is quick to give her own life so they may be reunited in death. Although Park said she doesn’t believe she has enough life experience to give advice about young love, like the romance between Tuptim and Lun Tha, she is inspired by their story. “I certainly am inspired every night by Tuptim and Lun Tha’s steadfast and determined devotion to each other and their hearts,” she said. “They choose to love, and they are willing to die for it.” To fall in love with Park and The King and I, call 212-257-0296 or visit www.lct.org for tickets and show times. T

he Whitney Museum of Art will present Open Plan, an experimental five-part exhibition using the museum’s fifth floor as an open-air gallery. The largest open museum space in New York, the Neil Bluhm Family Galleries measures an enormous 18,200 square feet and features breathtaking views of the city. Honored in this exhibit is filmmaker and visual artist, Steve McQueen, who has quite the

impressive résumé. His films include 12 Years a Slave (which won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture—Drama and the BAFTA Award for Best Film), Hunger and Shame. The talented Brit’s place in Open Plan will center on a newly expanded version of his work, End Credits (2012), which details informationa about documents from the FBI file kept on legendary African-American actor, singer and activist

Paul Robeson. The documents, once heavily censored, are now accessible by the public. McQueen chose to have them read by male and female voices. Open Plan: Steve McQueen runs from April 29 through May 14 at the Whitney Museum of American Art, located at 99 Gansevoort St., New York. For more information on upcoming exhibitions, call 212-570-3600 or visit www. whitney.org.

Persian Delight T

he scope of Persian food is as wide and varied as the region from which it originates. The center of the former Persian Empire, Iran, neighbors Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, the Arab states and countries from the former Soviet Union. Iran’s central location made it a heavily trafficked country

on the ancient Silk Road trade route and even the Greeks conquered their way through at one point. With all of that culture moving in and out of the country, it is no wonder why Persian cuisine reaches outside the Iranian border, into the Mediterranean and beyond. Sufiya’s Grill opened in East

Meadow more than three years ago and in that time, it has garnered a reputation for thrilling, homemade dishes prepared with spice blends and ingredients that surprise eaters and arouse their palates. It is a horizon-expanding dining experience in a relaxed atmosphere with generous hosts and a gracious staff. The menu at Sufiya’s is dotted with coveted ingredients from Iran, including walnuts, almonds, pistachios, mint, pomegranates and saffron, which is brought in directly from Iran, as only Spanish saffron is available at most American markets. When ordering appetizers, the best option is to go for the combination plate, which allows eaters to order any three dishes from the list. Options include kashkeh badenjan, a chunky eggplant dip in tomato sauce; falafel, hummus and

Ground beef and lamb kebab combines with cornish hen and Sufiya’s exquisite rice, while warm pita perfectly pairs with a dark Persian beer.

DELIGHT from page 6A sambuseh, crisp Iranian dumplings filled with crushed chickpeas and vegetables. The sambuseh’s creamy interior shares some of the flavors of the falafel, but the dumpling delivery method makes it a standout appetizer. It is served with Sufiya’s green dipping sauce, a brightly flavored mix of cilantro, parsley, jalapeño, crushed walnuts and white vinegar. Entrées at Sufiya, which translates to “mystic” from Urdu, begin with

a lesson in Persian rice. Relegated to the role of a side dish in this country, Persian rice is often simply prepared with butter and saffron, but it can also be married with dynamic ingredients and transformed into the meal’s centerpiece. There’s white and brown basmati rice, but true long-grain enlightenment lies in Sufiya’s cherry rice and barberry rice, both featuring varying levels of luscious sourness, a staple in the Iranian flavor palate. As for the main dish, Sufiya’s staff recommends pairing grilled meats

together in the Sultani combination platters. Options include kubideh kebab, skewers of seasoned ground beef and lamb; barg kebab, juicy steak tenderloin; jujeh kebab, pieces of cornish game hen marinated with lemon and saffron; and more. As with their rice, Sufiya’s is serious about meat preparation. All meats are marinated a day ahead for maximum flavor absorption—the result is succulent, tender and juicy. The restaurant also offers plenty of seafood and vegetarian dishes, along with classic Persian stews,

salads and sandwiches. But make sure to leave room for dessert, as the Persian ice cream is set apart from other culinary confections with creamy, saffron-flavored ice cream and pistachios, made in house everyday. Sufiya’s Grill, which will open a second location in Merrick this summer, is a departure from the usual dining experience—an alluring meal prepared with exotic flair. long time ago, HBO set the bar high for pay cable series with far more successes (The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire) than failures (John from Cincinnati, Lucky Louie). Count this trio of series as being firmly in the former category as they are being greeted with great anticipation and fanfare when they return on Sunday, April 24.

Veep When we last left Julia Louis-Dreyfuss’ Selena Meyers (left), she was on her way to solidifying her role as President of the United States before getting sidetracked by an Election Night electoral tie with rival, Senator Bill O’Brien. This after being forced to make her Deputy Director of Communications Dan Egan a scapegoat over a staff data breach and enduring the possibility that in the case of this tie, the Senate could wind up choosing Meyers’ wildly popular vice president Tom James (Hugh Laurie) to leap-frog her and become president.

Also Coming In 2016 Westworld Inspired by the 1973 film of the same name that was written and directed by the late Michael Crichton, this reboot also centers on a futuristic theme park with a western motif. Think of Colonial Williamsburg with spurs, chaps and androids. Created by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan (younger brother of Dark Knight filmmaker Christopher Nolan), this series stars Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Robert Ford, the creative director of Westworld. Rounding out the cast are Thandie Newton, Evan Rachel Wood, Ed Harris and James Marsden, who’ll be plunged into a plot being described as, “a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.”

Game of Thrones The fanatics who slavishly follow this fantasy drama derived from the series of George R.R. Martin novels will be eagerly waiting to see if certain questions will be answered. How did Sansa Stark and Theon Greyjoy fare after taking that leap of faith off the top of the castle walls? Will Jaime Lannister turn the ship around to Dorne after his daughter dies in his arms after being poisoned to death by the kiss of Ellaria Sand, the paramour of Prince Oberyn Martell? Will Arya Stark regain her sight after being blinded as a means of appeasing the Many Faced God? Will Peter Dinklage’s Tyrion Lannister be able to maintain ruling Meereen while a search is conducted for the current regent Daenerys Targaryen? And what of Daenerys, who was spirited away by her Drogon and was last seen being surrounded by a migrating Dothraki horde? What kind of hell will the disgraced Cersei unleash on the ruling religious sect The Sparrows now that Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane, who was practically dead, has been reanimated into some kind of freaky Frankenstein? And what of Jon Snow (left), resident Game of Thrones heartthrob, who we lost saw bleeding out on the pristine snow?

Silicon Valley While the idea that a series that revolves around tech and legal heavy scenarios and terminology like business incubators, intellectual property rights, venture capitalism and reverse engineering might be dry and uninteresting, series creators Dave Krinsky, John Altschuler and Mike Judge have defied the odds and are heading into the series’ third season. With a cast led by Thomas Middleditch (center), his Richard Hendricks is a socially awkward programmer whose music app Pied Piper was in danger of being legally stolen by his former employer Hooli and its megamaniacal CEO Gavin Belson. And while the last season wound up with Hendricks and his computer pod triumphing and retaining ownership rights to Pied Piper, the board of Raviga Capital, which had just purchased a controlling interest of the app, was in the midst of removing Hendricks as CEO after questions arose over his leadership.

f a return trip to the World Series isn’t in the cards for the Mets, at least fans will have plenty to nosh on at Citi Field this year. The New York Mets recently invited a hungry throng of media to sample some of the new entertainment and culinary options for the 2016 baseball season—a difficult task to be sure, but one that many intrepid reporters braved for the greater good. First, team representatives unveiled the new Coca Cola Corner, replacing the shuttered Pepsi Porch in right field. It features a new, full-color LED sign complete with video capabilities. The Mets also trotted out the Citi Perk Patrol, a group of bright-eyed youngsters who, along with Mr. and Mrs. Met, will provide high-energy antics and T-shirt cannon fodder. Plenty of promotions were also announced, including free shirt Fridays, Saturday postgame concerts, fireworks shows, family Sundays, a 1986 Championship weekend

But onto the important information, the Amazin’ food offered at Citi Field. Highlights this year include Fuku from chef David Chang, who offers spicy fried chicken sandwiches; cookies from Christina Tosi’s Milk Bar; pizza from Papa Russo; Pat LaFrieda steaks; Shake Shack; Blue Smoke; Dan & John’s Wings; Two Boots pizza; and much, much more.
