You don’t want to mess with the Long Island Roller Rebels (LIRR). Now in the middle of their 10th season, the skaters of Long Island’s flat track roller derby league are part of a derby revolution sweeping the country. While roller derby dates back to the 1920s, it saw a revival in the early 2000s and since the LIRR was launched in 2006, the popularity and demand on Long Island has been growing. And it’s no question why—derby is not

only a fun sport to play but the athleticism and speed make it exciting to watch as well. Flat track roller derby is a physically demanding, high contact team sport. Each team has five players on the track— one jammer and four blockers. The role of the jammer is to score points by passing blockers on the opposing team. While jammers are trying to skate around the track and other skaters, the blockers are forming a pack to keep them from getting by.

The LIRR, which consists of 19 All Stars (or “A” team members) and five Rock-ABetty Bruisers (the “B” team of newer skaters), has eight home games from March through November. The exciting, high energy games draw anywhere from 500 to 600 fans, anxious to see their favorite skaters rough it out on the track. Here’s a look at the All Star lineup for the 2016 season. —Betsy Abraham Find out more about what it takes to be a LIRR on page 8A.

THEATER REVIEW

KIMBERLY DIJKSTRA

Welcome To The Renaissance

Broadway audiences have been enchanted by Something Rotten! for a full year and there is no end in sight for the spellbinding musical. A tale of two brothers, Nick and Nigel Bottom, and their rivalry with superstar and heartthrob Will Shakespeare, Something Rotten! takes theatregoers on a tour through Elizabethan Age England, with a modern slant. The show opened at the St. James Theatre on April 22, 2015, to rave reviews. The talented cast included the well-known stage and screen actors Brian d’Arcy James and Christian Borle, as well as John Cariani, Heidi Blickenstaff, Brad Oscar and Kate Reinders, who all remain in their original roles. “The show is populated with some of the best comic actors on Broadway,” said Cariani, who plays Nigel Bottom, a playwright who idolizes Shakespeare while

anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. To honor the occasion, the Bottom brothers themselves appeared in front of the St. James before the show to draw names for a special live lottery—a true thrill for fans. With showstopping numbers and laugh-out-loud humor, Something Rotten! must not be missed. Viewers are treated to a smörgåsbord of expertly executed musical and dance numbers in a variety of genres and are sure to go home with the catchy tunes stuck in their heads for days. Something Rotten!, a musical comedy with a book by John O’Farrell and Karey Kirkpatrick and music and lyrics by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick, is at the St. James Theatre, 246 W. 44th St. For tickets, visit www.rottenbroadway.com or call Ticketmaster at 877-250-2929. hain restaurants often find themselves the recipient of fury from foodies who scoff at the notion of eating in an establishment that dares to cross state lines with a homogenized product. That righteous wrath is warranted at times, as some franchises willingly bow to the whims of freezers and microwaves. But eaters should not dismiss the suggestion of a chain restaurant simply because of the sins of the few. Maggiano’s Little Italy opened its first New York location on the grounds of Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City this past September— and any doubts about the restaurant’s authenticity should be checked

Maggiano’s Butter Cake and lasagna (left), and braised beef pappardelle (above) at the door. Maggiano’s boasts a true scratch kitchen. Every item on the menu is made fresh to order and the only product in the restaurant’s freezer is ice cream. The ingredients are simple and authentic, with contemporary flair only used when necessary. The family-style portions encourage sharing, and the dishes taste as though they were coaxed from grandma’s

coveted recipe box. The appetizer menu has all the favorites, but the best bet orders are the calamari fritté, bruschetta, tomato caprese and the stuffed mushrooms. The calamari, lightly fried, is exceedingly tender and yields to the bite thanks to a 24hour marination in skim milk. The

pasta dishes are clearly made with care by chefs with professional palates and a deep knowledge of where and when to use certain ingredients. The Mom’s Lasagna is warm and comforting, as it should be, with crumbled meatballs and sausage, ricotta and marinara in layers of perfectly cooked pasta. Maggiano’s also offers four-cheese ravioli and braised beef pappardelle, along with “lighter take” dishes offering lower calorie options. And in the spirit of Italian generosity, all classic pasta dish portions can be doubled for $5. And, somewhat amazingly, Maggiano’s allows guests to bring home any dish from the classic pastas menu “on the house.” As for the specialty pasta menu, Maggiano’s

PASTA from page 6A bruschetta’s simplicity surprises, with fresh tomatoes, basil, balsamic vinegar and roasted garlic on a buttery crostini, while the caprese offers similar delight minus the bread. The stuffed mushrooms star on the appetizer list, with spinach, garlic and seasoned breadcrumbs sitting atop a delectable butter sauce. Maggiano’s collection of classic

Rigatoni “D” (left) and angel hair vegetable primavera (above) gets creative with dishes like Rigatoni “D,” featuring herb-roasted chicken, mushrooms and caramelized onions in a Marsala cream sauce. The level of culinary perfection placed into each item is astounding, with the chicken pulled apart by hand and the onions slow cooked for hours, all coalescing into a multi-layered flavor experience. Other specialty dishes include gnocchi and Italian sausage and chicken and spinach manicotti. Keep dessert in mind, as

Maggiano’s has a long list of house made favorites. Topping the list is the rich and decadent Gigi’s Butter Cake served over a honey mascarpone cream alongside roasted balsamic grapes. It’s one of those bites that makes you believe in love. So, food snobs, find your way to Maggiano’s and become a believer. useum of the Moving Image is the country’s only museum devoted to moving image media including film, TV and digital media (pop culture on the Internet, video-based art and games), for more than 30 years. Today, the collection comprises more than 130,000 artifacts from every aspect of producing, marketing and exhibiting. “What you see now at the Museum of Moving Image is a result of our 2011 expansion and renovation,” said Tomoko Kawamoto, the museum’s public information manager. “We built new theaters and created more gallery space.” The collection also includes significant works of art by such artists as Red Grooms and Nam June Paik. More than 1,400 collection artifacts are currently on display in the museum’s core exhibition, Behind the Screen, and thousands more can be seen on the museum’s online collection database (www.collection. movingimage.us). “The museum was created as a

collaborative effort between the motion picture guilds and unions, back in the ‘80s, as part of the efforts to bring filmmaking back to this neighborhood,” said Kawamoto. It is now part of the Kaufman Arts District, which celebrates the arts in Astoria. The museum screens more than 400 films each year, and the Pinewood Dialogues, an ongoing series of

eremy ArbitalJacoby of Albertson remembers the first of his 11 Long Island Marathons. As ArbitalJacoby approached the point where half marathoners would peel off from the full marthoners and head back to Eisenhower Park, he heard the race official announcing, “Sane…Insane!” and directing runners to their respective routes. You just might have to be a wee bit crazy to run 26.2 miles. “For the first-time runner, it can be daunting,” admits ArbitalJacoby, a music educator. Mike Polansky, president of the Greater Long island Running Club (GLIRC), weighed in. “The course is not terribly challenging from a physical standpoint. It is, however, very challenging from a mental standpoint,” he said, noting that once the half marathoners head back, “the full marathoners now have 16 miles of loneliness ahead of them. There are many, many more half marathoners than full

marathoners. You go from running in a pack of runners to running in a very select group of hardy souls. It is not easy to go down the Wantagh to Jones Beach and back essentially all by yourself. You need a lot of mental toughness. Presumably if you are doing a full marathon, you will have properly trained so that you are physically ready…but you need to tough it out mentally to get through the event itself.” An entire literature has grown on how to train and what to do the final days before the big race. The GLIRC has year-round training and runs for all abilities, and its president has an easy approach to “eve of marathoning” routines: “It’s easier to say than to do, but try to relax,” Polansky said. “You’ve presumably done your training, and your body is ready to go, but try to keep to your normal routine, and not to stress out or obsess about the race. Relax, it’s going to be fun.” ArbitalJacoby assures that it’s worth the effort. “You finish a half marathon and it’s phenomenal,” he said. “You finish a marathon and it’s an amazing life experience. It is an incredible goal and you get unbelievable satisfaction when you cross the finish line.”

On Saturday, April 30, one milers and 5K runners will start on Charles Lindbergh Blvd and finish on the track inside the Mitchel Athletic Complex. The Complex is also the setting for the Kids Fun Run. On Sunday, May 1, marathon, half

marathon and 10K participants start together on Charles Lindbergh Boulevard and finish at Eisenhower Park. Afterward, enjoy the Finish Line Festival featuring live music and refreshments. See complete information at www. run-li.com.
