The Ultimate Breakfast Nook Kellogg’s NYC invites you to play with your food BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO dgilderubio@antonmediagroup.com

N

ostalgia is a powerful force and nowhere is it more evident than memories of digging into a bowl of cereal as a kid while watching Saturday morning cartoons. It’s something that Kellogg’s was banking on when they opened its inaugural Kellogg’s NYC location in Times Square back in 2016. Launched with help from consulting chef Christina Tosi and steered by restaurant veterans Anthony Rudolf (Jean Georges, Per Se) and Sandra Di Capua (Eleven Madison Park), the idea was to create a space that essentially rebranded the concept of cereal. Originally situated in a 1,000-square foot space, it’s since moved downtown to a 5,000-square foot space in Union Square that’s far roomier, is well-lit and welcoming. Hammock chairs, dining room tables, couches and even kitchen counters invite customers to sit and chow down on anywhere from 10 to 15 different types of cereal that can be mixed up or served with a variety of toppings. A large box of Raisin Bran looms above a DIY cereal bar with 10 hoppers of different brands beckoning diners to come and mix and match their choices. Across the way is an Instagram station festooned with props where aficionados can adorn their creations before sharing them on social media. There’s even a halved disco ball complete with fake cereal and a large spoon lazily spinning on the ceiling by the large second-floor windows overlooking Union Square Park. It’s all part of the overall experience that Di Capua and her partner were striving for when Kellogg’s first approached them back in 2016. “We’re not marketers, we’re not

packaged goods people—we’re hospitality people; and for us, the guest experience and the food is what matters to us,” she explained. “For us, it’s about hospitality and food. Flavors and making people feel warm. We talk often with our team about this Maya Angelou quote that we borrow

from, which is ‘People often forget what they ate, but they’ll never forget the way you make them feel.’ So, we have our visitors experience joy through a bowl of cereal, nostalgia or a sense of familiarity.” Creativity is encouraged, given that Di Capua and Rudolf like nothing

more than seeing patrons play with their food. Many ingredients are bought fresh from the local green market and include everything from roasted apples, fresh strawberries and poached pears to sprinkles, yellow cake mix and chocolate chips. Take your pick of Frosted Flakes, Corn Pops, Apple Jacks, Rice Krispies, Unicorn Cereal and the most popular flavor, Froot Loops. Prices range from $2 for a straight-up bowl and $4.50 if you choose to mix-and-match cereals while incorporating an unlimited amount of 30 different toppings. With the mantra being Eat, Chill and Create, the middle part is stressed. Not unlike Starbucks, Kellogg’s NYC has Wi-Fi and it’s not unusual for people to have meetings here or use it as a makeshift office. There are also 65-inch TVs to kick back and watch, along with a variety of card and board games to play while you munch away to your heart’s content. And while there are no plans to open up new locations, Di Capua feels they have achieved their mission in spades. “Kellogg’s wanted to bring [cereal] to life in a new way. It’s a brand that’s been on grocery store and supermarket shelves for the last 110-plus years,” she said. “The way that we interact with cereal is that we usually see it on a grocery store shelf, you pick up and take it home. It’s sort of lived like that for a very long time. So the opportunity to bring it to life in a very personal and hospitable way has never been done. What they charged us to do was reimagine a bowl of cereal and that’s what we did.” Kellogg’s NYC is located at 31 E. 17th St. in NYC. Visit www.kelloggsnyc.com to find out more information. THE CEREAL ISSUE

He-Man

Animated Breakfast: Saturday M BY ANTHONY MURRAY

amurraY@antonmediagroup.com

There was nothing like being a kid when Saturday mornings rolled around. The “stressful” week of school was behind us and we could finally kick back, relax with that bowl of sugary cereal and watch our favorite Saturday morning cartoons. Here is a look back on some all-time favorite cartoons for all generations. First up is the kids show H.R. Pufnstuf, which debuted on NBC in 1969. Although only 17 episodes were produced, they were successful enough that NBC kept it on the Saturday morning schedule until August 1972. The show centered on a shipwrecked boy named Jimmy who, along with his talking flute named Freddy, takes a ride on a mysterious boat to Living Island. Unfortunately for them, the boat was controlled by the witch Wilhelmina Witchiepoo, who used the boat to lure Jimmy and Freddy to her castle on Living Island, so she could hold Jimmy prisoner and steal Freddy for her own purposes. Once on the island, Jimmy was rescued by H.R. Pufnstuf, the friendly and helpful (odd looking) dragon who was also the mayor of Living Island. H.R. Pufnstuf, along with his friends, protected Jimmy and Freddy from Witchiepoo’s evil plots. Jumping into the early ‘80s, there was He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, which until this day has a cult following. The show took place on the planet Eternia where Prince Adam, the young son of Eternia’s rulers, King Randor and Queen Marlena, would transform into He-Man, the most

H.R. Pufnstuf powerful man in the universe once he held up the Sword of Power. Together with his close allies—Battle Cat, The Sorceress, Teela, Man-At-Arms and Orko, He-Man uses his powers to defend Eternia from the evil forces of Skeletor. And good news for all you Millennials who might be interested in catching an episode, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is streaming on Netflix. Continuing in the ‘80s is the Muppet Babies which ran for eight seasons on CBS. The show portrays childhood versions of the famous Muppets living together in a nursery under the care of a woman named Nanny. Although viewers never actually see what Nanny looks like—only Nanny’s pink skirt, purple sweater,

and distinctive green and white striped socks were shown in the show. Just last month, Disney Junior launched a reboot of Muppet Babies which is now CGI-animated. Closing out the ‘80s is a group of street-fighting reptiles who lived in the

sewers of New York City—the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The show centered around ninjas Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael and their rat sensei Splinter’s continuous battle against the evil villain Shredder from the Foot Clan. The pilot was shown during the week of Dec. 28, 1987 on CBS as a five-part miniseries. The show began its official run on Oct. 1, 1988 and ended in 1996. Since then, the show and franchise has become a worldwide phenomenon, becoming one of the most popular animated series in television history. The turtles have been featured in numerous movies, did a short stint on the TV show Power Rangers, and will be coming back with a new show called Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on Nickelodeon in September 2018. Entering the ‘90s, we have Recess which followed the lives of six fourth graders—T.J. Detweiler, Vince LaSalle, Ashley Spinelli, Mikey Blumberg Gretchen Grundler and Gus Griswald— as they go about their daily lives in a highly clichéd school environment at Third Street Elementary School. Plus, who can forget the “enforcer” Miss Finster, the strict disciplinarian who was feared by all the students in the playground. Recess premiered on ABC on Aug. 31, 1997, as part of the ABC Kids Saturday morning lineup and even had a theatrical released movie Recess: School’s Out in 2001 as well as some direct to video movie releases. Lastly, who can forget the yellow sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea in the fictional town of Bikini Bottom? Spongebob Squarepants has

till this day. The show follows the adventures of Spongebob and the many inhabitants of Bikini Bottom like Patrick Starr who is Spongebob’s best friend, the depressing Squidward

Tentacles, money hungry and owner of the Krusty Krab, Eugene Krabs, the evil Plankton, and Texas transplant Sandy Cheeks. Spongebob Squarepants has gone on to have

theatrical movie releases and now has its own Broadway show, SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical, which launched at the Palace Theatre in Manhattan last December.

Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) announced that through its partnership with DHL Express, it has sent more than 75,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies to U.S. military personnel stationed overseas as part of the 13th annual Operation Cookie Program. The partners recently held an event at the Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s Service Center in Garden City to prepare boxes of Girl Scout Cookies to be shipped overseas. “We were thrilled to celebrate our record year, with over 75,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies donated to our girls through the Girl Scout Cookie Program, making this our largest Operation Cookie event to date. It was really a wonderful opportunity to show our girls what a difference they can make together, while also helping them learn the importance of giving back and helping others,” said Rande Bynum, CEO of GSNC. “We thank the people of Nassau County who have helped us and donated to make Operation Cookie possible, and our

Scout Cookies. Through their ongoing partnership, GSNC and DHL have shipped more than 771,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies® to American servicemen and women overseas in places like Afghanistan, Kuwait, Bahrain and Japan. Deliveries are also made to military bases across the U.S., including many local units in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Deliveries also go to those who serve locally, such as the men and women of the Coast Guard stationed at Jones Beach, the U.S. Marines base in Garden City and the Midshipmen at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

“We were honored to be helping our local Girl Scout organization while also helping bring a sense of home to soldiers around the world as a thank you for their time and sacrifices,” said Joe Lotz, JFK Gateway Director at DHL Express. “As an organization that is dedicated to supporting our military personnel, we always look forward to partnering with Girl Scouts of Nassau County to make our annual Operation Cookie event a success. This program has given us the opportunity to give in so many ways and we’ve enjoyed watching the number of boxes being donated grow each year.” Men and women in the U.S. military will soon be enjoying the final installment of their favorite Girl Scout Cookies such as Thin Mints, Savannah Smiles, Do-Si-Dos, Samoas, Trefoils, Tagalongs and S’Mores. The Girl Scout Cookie Program and Operation Cookie teaches Girl Scouts about goal setting, decision-making, money management, people skill, and business ethics—aspects essential to leadership, success and life. Individuals can donate toward Operation Cookie year-round by visiting www.gsnc.org and selecting their donation to go toward Operation Cookie for the 2018 Girl Scout Cookie season.

Annual ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ Food Drive To Begin Campaign

sland Harvest Food Bank is once again teaming up with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and the United States Postal Service (USPS) for the 26th annual Stamp Out Hunger campaign on Saturday, May 12. As the nation’s largest single-day food drive, postal carriers across the country will collect nonperishable food items donated by generous postal customers. On Long Island, all food collected will help Island Harvest Food Bank to provide supplemental food support to more than 300,000 Long Islanders who are at risk of hunger and food insecurity. “Participating in Stamp Out Hunger is easy,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank. “Simply leave nonperishable food items in a bag next to your mailbox before your regularly scheduled mail delivery on May 12, and your USPS letter carrier will do the rest.” Nonperishable food items needed include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices and shelf-stable milk (no glass items). All food donated on Long Island will help replenish Island Harvest Food Bank’s network

Out Hunger has collected more than 1.5 billion pounds of food nationally to help address the issue of hunger in America. Last year, Stamp Out Hunger netted 71 million pounds of food in 10,000 cities and towns, and in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 2017, Long Islanders donated 268,582 pounds of food to Stamp Out Hunger, which supplemented 223,818 meals. —Anton Media Staff

of food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties. “Every donation, no matter how small, helps our neighbors who are struggling to put food on their tables,” said Dresner. “The National Association of Letter Carriers is pleased to partner with Island Harvest Food Bank and support its efforts in addressing the problem

of hunger on Long Island,” said Walter Barton, president, NALC Branch 6000. “Our Letter Carriers often see the need for food assistance firsthand as part of their daily rounds, and we’re happy to help give back to the community, and provide much-needed food support for the thousands of families affected by hunger here in our local communities.” Since its inception in 1993, Stamp

Grumman Receives Data Contract From Navy BY ANTON MEDIA STAFF

editorial@antonmediagroup.com

Congressman Tom Suozzi recently announced that Northrop Grumman Systems Corp. has been awarded a contract of $7,255,294 by the Department of the Navy to develop machine learning algorithms (MLAs) for the Reactive Electronic Attack Measures (REAM) Program. The project is expected to be completed by December 2019, with all work being done on site in Bethpage. “The aerospace and defense industries are a critical component of our district’s economy and important for job creation. This contract is great news for Northrop Grumman, and for people living on Long Island. It helps sustain Long Island’s legacy of being the Cradle of Aviation and Hi-Tech Island,” said Suozzi. Northrop Grumman Systems, headquartered in West Falls Church, VA, is the fifth-largest defense contractor in world. The company was formed in 1994 when the Northrop Corporation purchased Grumman Aerospace Corporation. Grumman, known for the Wildcat and Hellcat fighter aircraft and the Apollo Lunar Module, was once Long Island’s largest employer. “Northrop Grumman was pleased to win this contract and continue our work on the REAM program,” said Tom Tack, site lead, Northrop Grumman. “This award is further recognition of Northrop Grumman’s long-standing legacy in Bethpage as a leading provider of advanced electronic warfare capabilities for our warfighters. We are grateful for the support and strong leadership of Congressman Suozzi on the House Armed Services Committee.” Suozzi is a member of the House Armed Services Committee. He sits on the Tactical Air and Land Forces Subcommittee and the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee.

Social Media And The Prom Dress BY ELIZABETH JOHNSON

ejohnson@antonmediagroup.com

Social media has impacted our lives in so many ways, so it is not unusual to understand that it has also helped the prom scene. Prom season is upon us and finding the right dress is paramount to every junior and senior girl in high school. A dress, whether long or short, is requisite attire for the event and has to be unique. Social media allows you to mainstream information as to what you are wearing. There is a big difference as to which prom dress to get and of course, who is wearing what. With the introduction of Facebook, there is now an annual group that is formed for the senior prom, and in some cases the junior prom, where each female attendee can put her selection online to inform other classmates of her intended dress. Instagram and Snapchat are other social media outlets in use as information channels. Each high school girl can join, or is invited to join, and look at the beautiful array of prom dress selections taken by a student posted with a selfie. The social commentary on the dress is limited to a thumbs up or a heart and I believe for most, that is where it ends. It may sound like a good idea but it puts an enormous amount of pressure on girls to rush right out, find their dress and post a

picture, panicking that someone may have already selected the dress before them. The medium does allow for girls to change their mind and on occasion, there are duplicated selections and energetic discussions/highlights of who chose which dress first. Fights do happen, but they are usually resolved with amicable discussion. This exercise eliminates the dreaded duplication of dresses worn. Of course, if it does happen, the girls can always say “great minds think alike.” Another way social media has changed the prom scene is by posting a prom gown for use by someone less fortunate. In this day and age where a cellphone is a must but prom dresses are not, opportunities abound. Such was the case in Maryland, where a young woman tweeted and offered to loan her dress to someone in need. She volunteered her dress, shoes and even make-up to someone in the area who was unable to purchase a prom dress. This act of philanthropy has sparked a new trend for teens, which subsequently proposed numerous offers of prom dresses in several states and included men offering up their threads as a loaner. Indeed, with the random tweets of kindness, also came offers of professional makeup artists and photographers providing their services for the prom experience to be a once-in-a-lifetime celebration that you will never forget.

Parental Pre-prom Snacks BY JENNIFER FAUCI

jfauci@antonmediagroup.com

Let’s be real, the pre-prom party is mainly for the adults. Girls won’t eat anything for fear of ruining their dresses or messing up their makeup and the guys have probably already downed a sandwich or two before donning their tuxes. But what about the hungry parents? It’s true that after the pictures are over and seniors take off in their limos on the way to the prom that the adults have their own party with cocktails and catered food, but what about during the photos opps and waiting around? These canapes—courtesy of our favorite celebrity chefs—are perfect for adults to enjoy while the girls are primping and the boys are patiently waiting to loosen that bow tie.

Sausage & Pancetta Stuffed Mushrooms Recipe courtesy of Anne Burrell Makes 30 mushrooms “These mushrooms are double-stuffed with pork, so even if you think you don’t like mushrooms, remember, they’re just the vessel for a double dose of porky deliciousness. Tip: Always make a small tester patty out of the stuffing before filling all the caps. Cook the patty and taste it to make sure it’s delicious. It may sound like an unnecessary step, but it’s one you don’t want to skip. There’s nothing fun about an underseasoned mushroom.”

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. 2. Coat a large sauté pan with olive oil, add the pancetta, and bring to medium-high heat. Cook the pancetta until it starts to brown and crisp on the edges, 6 to 8 minutes. Add the onions and the red pepper and season with salt. Continue cooking until the onions are soft and aromatic, 8 to 10 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes, stirring frequently. 3. Stir in the mushroom stems and rosemary and cook until the mushrooms are brown and soft, 5 to 6 minutes. Add the wine and cook until evaporated. Remove from the heat and cool. 4. Meanwhile, in a large bowl combine the sausage, egg, Parmigiano, and bread crumbs; add the mushroom mixture, season, and mix well (if the filling seems a little dry, add ¼ to ½ cup water to moisten). 5. When it’s cool enough, taste your tester patty to make sure it’s delicious—if it’s not, reseason. 6. ‘Take Our Sons And Daughters T Gives Children A Glimpse Into N

N

YU Winthrop Hospital celebrated “Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day” by hosting children of staff members in an exciting day of healthcare discovery and activities. Thirty five children, ages 7 to 11, toured the hospital and visited the NYU Winthrop Research and Academic Center, learning about special fields of healthcare expertise. The children were especially animated upon donning protective lab coats, masks and caps that allowed them to enter an area that is usually off limits to all but a few—the Central Sterile Service (CSS) department. There the children learned, in simulated activity, how to “prep and pack” tools, readying them for sterilization in autoclaves (ovens) for later use in the operating room. “We wanted the children to understand the role we have and its impact on patient safety and infection prevention,” said Richard Kraft, Director of Center Sterile Service at NYU Winthrop Hospital.

When asked what she enjoyed about the CSS visit, 8-year-old Alicea Rekha from Huntington said, “I liked the part that had tools that they called instruments, and we put them in a bag

so no one gets hurt because they’re really sharp.” That CSS visit was followed by hands-on work with a Pediatric Nutritionist who taught the group

about healthy snacks and diabetes and how people get it. Then there was a lively exercise led by NYU Winthrop Athletic Trainer Christopher Napoli, who taught the staff’s sons and

s To Work Day’ o NYU Winthrop daughters about stretching before sports, the importance of exercising, and what an Athletic Trainer does. The children partnered up with one another to do a core conditioning exercise, the “patty-cake plank.” Getting into push-up positions and facing one another, the pairs tried to lift one hand each to do a patty cake with their partner, all the while with the group singing loudly, “Patty cake, patty cake baker’s man…” “It seemed fun, to see new things and explore the building that my mom works in. It was very exciting, lots of new things and I made new friends,” said 11-year-old Christian Parlog, from Hicksville, about wanting to visit NYU Hospital. The day finished with a healthcare test game with participants racing to hit their instant-response clickers with the right answers to questions such as how a physician puts you to sleep, whether by talking to you, tickling you, or with anesthesia. —Submitted by NYU Winthrop Hospital

he students, faculty and staff of Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) came together this month to show their solidarity in the face of tragedy. Fellow artisans joined efforts to create a Peace Garden in the LIHSA courtyard in honor of school shooting victims everywhere. Students planted 239 plants, commemorating each school or college campus shooting since the Sandy Hook massacre in 2012. The Peace Garden celebrates the vibrancy of life, artistically honoring the victims while uniting LIHSA students in the pursuit of peace. The garden features nourishing vegetable plants as well as brightly colored flowers in the flush of their first bloom, representing the unique beauty of each life lost and the importance of nurturing all life so that it can thrive.

A vital regional resource, Nassau BOCES offers state-ofthe-art programs for learners of all ages and abilities as well as cost-effective services for school districts and municipalities. Empowering students to achieve their maximum potential in alternative, artistic, outdoor, special education, virtual and career and technical environments, BOCES offers adult education and a variety of programs that are vital to improving the Long Island regional economy. In addition, BOCES’ technology services form the backbone of many school districts’ infrastructure. As the county’s educational leader in implementing the state’s reform efforts, BOCES helps to shape the future of education. To learn more, visit www.nassauboces.org. —Submitted by Nassau BOCES

(fill in the blank) and now here are the things we can do while we are Spa there.” Instead, think of an activity If there was ever peace on earth, that you enjoy, or that excites you, many would agree it’s found at or challenges you, or is relaxing, and the spa. Typically spa vacations build a vacation around that. are meant to be relaxing and Spa, golf, horseback riding, hiking stress-free. There are so many choices when it comes to hiking, literally thousands, just in upstate New York alone. You can be so distracted by some of the state’s natural outdoor beauty, making this a great getaway activity for someone who really loves to hike, as well as someone who doesn’t like hiking very much. You’ll forget that you are actually hiking. Check out:

Cascade Mountain

Hike Cascade Mountain in Lake Placid, a little less than a five-mile hike, has views of the Adirondack’s Great Range, with a 4,098-foot peak.

Ausable Adventure Trail

Ausable Adventure Trail in Keeseville is home to a five-mile hiking trail above Ausable Chasm, “the Grand

Canyon of the East.”

Overlook Mountain

Overlook Mountain in Woodstock hosts a 4.6-mile hike and has been rated by many as a “great hike for people who don’t like hiking” although plan this hike early because it can get crowded on good days.

Constitution Marsh Trail

Constitution Marsh trail in Garrison is approximately a two-mile hike, great for bird watchers, featuring views of the Hudson River, the Highlands and West Point Academy. Also check out: • Watkins Glen State Park Gorge Trail in the Finger Lakes • Good Luck Lake and Cliffs Trail in the Adirondacks • Devil’s Hole State Park in Niagara Falls • Breakneck Ridge Trail in Beacon • Anthony’s Nose in Peekskill • Buttermilk Falls in Ithaca

Fishing

Fishing is another great activity that you don’t even need to leave the state for. New York is home to some of the country’s best fishing, thanks to its vast rivers, lakes and streams. Go at it alone, take a chartered tour or guided trip. Plenty of bait and tackle shops offer lessons and advice about fishing its local waters. Check local regulations for fishing license and daily catch limits. Here’s a sampling of some of the state’s popular hot spots: • Hudson River • Delaware River • Mohawk River • Lake Champlain • Finger Lakes • Lake Ontario • Lake Erie • Salmon River • Niagara River

Cape May County’s Natural Beauty “Close to home, but an experience like no other” is what people from the Northeast say about visiting the Jersey Cape. Generations of families have come to the Jersey Cape, also known as Cape May, to vacation each summer and have described a certain feeling they get upon arriving at this unique peninsula. Vacationers have pointed to the beautiful natural environment of Cape May while others have described past memories of the local fare. So whether it’s the sight of the majestic shore birds on the salt marsh, or memories of sights, sounds and smells of the boardwalk, you will develop your own special spot for Cape May. Spend the day on the pristine beaches and clear waters of the Atlantic while inland waterways provide for unmatched fishing, birding, sightseeing and water sports recreation. The Cape also plays host to highly rated golf courses and biking trails. Off the beach, musical theatrical and family fun events fill the calendar while historical, amusement and shopping attractions dot the map. Add all of that to the fresh local seafood, produce and beverage options and you’ll surely have that feeling the next time you return. THIS WEEK’S BIRTHDAYS

This will be an unusual year for you as you defy norms and enjoy circumstances that are so unlikely that no one would have predicted them. For starters, you buck the prevalent self-help advice to get out of your comfort zone and boldly stretch into change. Oddly enough, change won’t require you to be uncomfortable. Rather, growth happens naturally and in steady, slow increments. You’ll drop all worry and striving and move gracefully into an entirely new chapter of your life. COPYRIGHT 2018 CREATORS.COM

ARIES (March 21-April 19). Talent is overrated. Attitude and work ethic will win every time. You don’t have to have a talent for something to do well with it, and you’re not guaranteed to do well at something just because you have a talent for it. You’ll benefit from thinking of talent as merely a bonus that pushes things over the top. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Sometimes the reasons to remain faithful to a cause have little to do with the cause itself. It could be that it’s simply easier to maintain your position than to change. Or perhaps the opposition is too irritating to concede to or align with. Good fortune will come of knowing your truth on the matter, whatever it may be. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Your concept of “good enough” is what’s getting a hard look this week. You have something that works but could work much, much better. But you’re not sure you want to stop all the action and devote yourself to making the improvement. Over time, the effort you make in this regard will pay you back threefold. CANCER (June 22-July 22). You already know how to be proficient at what you do. You’ve experienced the rewards of fitting in, doing your part, achieving what’s expected. Now you’re ready to aim for excellence. Greatness requires self-knowledge. Self-knowledge requires detachment. Stop; drop back; see the bigger picture of your life. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). The Greek philosopher Socrates, who is considered to be the godfather of Western philosophy, believed that we all have the knowledge we need inside of us already, though we may need help in bringing it to the surface of our awareness. This week, that help will come in two forms: loving support and challenge. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). What you give is sometimes deeply appreciated and other times completely overlooked. Having experienced both sides of it, you know there are benefits either way. While it’s nice to be noticed, there’s much that can be accomplished under the radar. It’s why this week you’ll prefer to work anonymously. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). People have different social needs and appetites. Note that you’ll be extremely attractive to all kinds of people this week. Some will want you to join the group; others will want to whisk you away for some alone time. Lucky for them, you’ll be feeling curious and up for most kinds of adventures. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Much of the population is oblivious to introspection. They believe, as long as philosophers are doing the philosophical exploration, they don’t have to bother. Contrastingly, you can’t imagine your life without personal philosophical introspection, and this week it will lead you to make an important decision. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). This week’s dilemma: “The world is so hard, and I’m so soft! What is to be done about it?” Two things. Protect yourself as needed, but don’t go overboard. (You wouldn’t want to confuse being alive with actually living.) Secondly, don’t underestimate the power of soft things. Water is soft, and it literally moves mountains. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Are you being too easy on yourself? Are you being too hard on yourself? Are you thinking too much or too little about your part in it all? The answer to all of the above questions is “yes” at one time or another. Service and contribution is the overarching remedy for whatever ails you. It gets you out of your head! AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Many around you have forgotten or neglected a means of examining themselves, so your willingness to step back and have a think about your role and approach to it will have a bigger impact than you realize. You are very inspiring to others in your own quiet way. It’s a gentle, slow-growing style of inspiration. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Ideological clashes abound. There are so many groups you don’t agree with in theory. And yet, there’s hardly a person you can’t find something to like about when it’s one-on-one. Ultimately, your fairness and genuine love of humanity makes you easy to talk to, which allows you to learn quite a lot this week.

ppropriate anytime from a quick breakfast to a night owl’s 3 a.m. attack of the munchies, cereal transcends society’s assigned mealtime slots. Taking full advantage of the country’s killer cereal craving is Spoons Ice Cream & Cereal Bar, which will soon have three locations on Long Island in Seaford, Stewart Manor and Massapequa Park. The curious confectionery spot blends vanilla ice cream with various “swirl-ins,” including an array of childhood favorite cereals alongside sweets like candy bars, cookies and cones. With 18 cereals and 20 other sweets to choose from, it would take a math whiz to figure out the exact number of concoctions that one could create. Since math is fun for precisely no one, here are five of the craziest concoctions you can make yourself at Spoons. *Note: both ice cream and milkshake swirls come with two swirl-ins, with each additional swirl-in costing 75 cents each. Also, the below mixes are not menu items, but inventions of the writer.

Reese’s Puffs with Cocoa Puffs and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups This might seem obvious, but it is worth mentioning. Swirl cereals Reese’s Puffs and Cocoa Puffs with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups for an pleasing overload of the enticing sweet and salty classic combination. Cereal puffs Cocoa and Reese’s— which were somehow discontinued for a time— come together for a smooth ice cream version of the classic PB and chocolate bite. Adding Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups to the mix might seem like overkill to some—but in the land of cereal ice cream, there is no such thing as “over doing it.”

Yabba O’Dabba Goo Fruity Pebbles with Lucky Charms and Mini Marshmallows The most alluring aspect of Spoons is that the strange cereals brews you dreamed up as a kid become a reality. Nowhere is this more true

than when blending Fruity Pebbles with Lucky Charms. The Flintstone’s hocked cereal with its dizzying array of colors and “fruit” flavors is the perfect combo with that leprechaun’s multi-colored marshmallows and oat-y thingys. Tossing in standard mini marshmallows adds the extra “goo” element to bring it all together. A touch of graham cracker could also take this to another level.

Captain Cracker’s Treat Cap’n Crunch Berries with Rice Krispies Treats and Graham Cracker When Cap’n Crunch introduced his Crunch Berries, it was more than just a clever way to fight scurvy. Those colorful balls added bright-berry flavor to the Cap’n’s corn and oat puffs of...are they life preservers or perhaps swimmies? Regardless, blended with the criminally discontinued Rice Krispies Treat cereal is a combination you didn’t know you needed. The addition of graham cracker breaks up the onslaught of sweetness with some texture, while the marshmallow inherent in the Treats holds everything together.

Frosted Flakes and Cinnamon Toast Crunch with Cannoli Shells and Chocolate Cake Crunchies Frosted Flakes is the culmination of the genius idea to take a bad cereal (Corn Flakes) and make it good with “frost” (sugar). Taking the frosted feature and applying it to the cinnamon toast experience of Cinnamon Toast Crunch is the driving force behind this mixture. The cinnamon-sugar dusting on Toast combines with the frost of Flakes for a flavor that really should be found in the cereal aisle. Since it is not, make it yourself at Spoons. Cannoli shells and chocolate cake crunchies give the impression that you are eating a cannoli filled with cinnamon-sugar cream.

The Meta Cookie Cookie Crisp and Oreo O’s with Oreo’s and Cookie Dough The once-discontinued Oreo O’s cereal is back on the supermarket self, and Spoons is beginning to add it to its selection of cereals ready for a swirl into ice cream or a shake. Be bold—and slightly

cookie-obsessed—by blending it with Cookie Crisp, cookie dough and crushed Oreo’s for a cookie-inception with vanilla ice cream acting as the milk for a treat that would make Cookie Monster blush. And a side note, shout out to whoever invented Cookie Crisp—which is essentially a bowl of chocolate chip cookies for breakfast.

hen I was dragged to the supermarket as a kid, there were only two things that I looked forward to as a reward for good behavior: picking out my own ice cream and cereal. These days, the cereal game is severely lacking, which is a good thing as healthier options are more prominent in the aisle. But long gone are the days of unlimited boxes of sugar filled puffs and pops that I looked forward to as a kid. Rice Krispies Treats, Sprinkle Spangles and French Toast Crunch were favorites and I was utterly heartbroken when those colorful boxes no longer graced the shelves. Reminisce back to a sweeter time when these now discontinued cereals filled your bowl. For a comprehensive list of almost every cereal known to man, visit www.mrbreakfast.com.
