Flying With The Blue Angels BY JENNIFER FAUCI
T
The Blue Angels headline the Bethpage Air Show
JFAUCI@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
he Blue Angels are ready to take to the skies on May 28 and 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the 13th annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach. For the first time, three jet teams will perform at the air show alongside the Blue Angels including the Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds and the Breitling Jet Team. Other performers include the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, legendary air show pilot Sean Tucker, the world famous GEICO Skytypers and their flight squadron, the American Airpower Museum Warbirds, the SUNY Farmingdale State College Flying Rams and several others. Captain Jeff Kuss, a captain in the Marine Corps from the small town of Durango, CO, can’t wait to get up in the air. The Blue Angel and his comrades are based in Pensacola, FL, but are beyond excited to come to New York. LIW: Why did you want to become a pilot? Kuss: As far back as I can remember, I’ve been infatuated with airplanes and that was my passion in life. I started flying before I got my driver’s license. I got my pilot’s license and the Marine Corps appealed to me; the ideas and values, and I wanted to fly the fastest things I could find. LIW: How long have you been in the military? Kuss: This is my 10th year in the military and once you get in, you go through basic flight and water training and

a fundamental school for the F18 where you learn to fly that aircraft. This is my second year in the Blue Angels and it’s amazing to be a part of this team and represent our country in this fashion, but it takes a lot of practice to make everything so precise. LIW: What are the requirements to become a Blue Angel? Kuss: You have to have a required level of flight hours to get experience that you need in the aircraft. You also need to meet recommendations and character traits from the Marine Corps and combat forces we all come from. Once you meet those, then you apply online, meet the team and go through testing. It’s very competitive. LIW: You pick a handful of officers each year to join the team. How many Blue Angels are there? Kuss: There’s about 100 to 130 in the squadron, which sounds like a lot but it’s pretty few, and all of the marines and sailors are wellversed in the aircraft. We do 35
seasons and each season goes from mid-March through mid-November. We have 16 officers on board right now, including three marines that fly Fat Albert, our transportation aircraft. LIW: What’s the most difficult maneuver you can do? Kuss: They’re all difficult. It depends on the show site obstacle course because some are more challenging than others. The looping cross with all six aircrafts is a lot of fun to practice. LIW: What do you do when you’re not flying? Kuss: I spend most of my spare time with my family. My son has been to quite a few air shows and he likes the camaraderie with all the other families on the team. We’re all one big family. LIW: What is your favorite part about being a Blue Angel or pilot? Kuss: The flying is awesome, but talking to the kids is so cool. To take a knee and kneel down and ask the kids what they want to be when they get older and what they thought of our flight... to have that interaction is so special. Just to offer encouragement and inspiration and promote what the team does as a whole, to be a good person and be happy. Do what you want to do and find success there. THEATER
Faith, Trust And Pixie Dust “P
eople of all ages are being swept up by this story, it still makes me tingle to be in the theater,” said James Graham, who wrote the book Finding Neverland. “It’s a story about the magic of storytelling. Everyone knows the story of Peter Pan, but few people know how it was created, by a writer who, like all of us when we grow up, felt a bit stuck, and like he’d lost some of his sparkle.” Finding Neverland tells the story of Scottish author J.M. Barrie (Kevin Kern), who meets and befriends a widow named Sylvia Llewelyn Davies (Courtney Balan) and her four sons, Michael, Jack, George and Peter, whom Barrie later uses as the inspiration for the character and story of Peter Pan. According to Graham, the Llewelyn Davies family “reawakens” Barrie’s imagination, with a “little sprinkling of magic dust” from director Diane Paulus. The show was indeed inspired

by the 2004 movie of the same name starring Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet. Graham also drew on the history of Barrie as well as the all-important music notes to carry the play. “The sound of Gary Barlow and Eliot Kennedy’s music makes the tone of the musical feel more
modern,” said Graham. “They’re fantastic British pop writers and to us, that’s what it sounds like to be in Barrie’s imagination, completely different to the Edwardian world around him.” Finding Neverland will be leaving Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre and returning home to London on
Aug. 21. The production will begin a U.S. world tour in the fall before spending spring 2017 in London, of which Graham and the rest of the cast are thrilled to take the play back to where it is set. But there is word of a return to Broadway in the future. “Our show is also a celebration of theater—the beauty and power of live storytelling on stage. It was important to us that we use some of those classic traditions,” said Graham of making Peter Pan female, like many adaptations of the tale have done in the past. “In our musical, Peter Pan is a very physical part, there’s a lot of very beautiful, but demanding choreography from Mia Michaels. I still gasp when I see some of it, even today.” For tickets and show times, visit www.findingneverlandthemusical.com. For a full review on Finding Neverland, turn to page 10A.

Meatless Menus
ong Island vegans no longer have to travel to Manhattan, settle for a salad or several sides, or be limited to ethnic cuisine to enjoy a delicious meal out. In addition to Asian restaurants like New Garden in Port Washington that offer Zen selections with mock meat, Greek places such as Limani and Kyma in Roslyn that provide plenty of plant options and the plethora of vegetarian Indian restaurants in Hicksville, celebrate Meatless May in style at these Island eateries where vegans and carnivores coexist—and even thrive—at establishments that boast menus to please all palates.

Fort Salonga Rd., Northport www.thepurpleelephant.net • 631-651-5002 While enjoying The Purple Elephant’s relaxed vibe overlooking the marina in Northport, share a fun appetizer of Patacones & Guacamole “Jubileo,” an assortment of Costa Rican crispy fried green plantains, homemade white corn tortilla chips and yucca chips that can be dipped into little cups of pico, refried black beans, guacamole and hummus. One of the most flavorful entrées ever is the generous portion of Chris G.’s Eggplant Extraordinaire, made with crispy eggplant, roasted tomato and Daiya mozzarella over raw zucchini “noodles” with pesto. Other tempting selections include “Burnt Ends” Enchiladas and Casado Platter Costa Rican “Comida Tipica.” End the meal with a decadent vegan brownie topped with peanut butter cream that comes from a specialty bakery in Pennsylvania.

41 E. Main St., Bay Shore www.tulakitchen.com • 631-539-7183 At the vegan-friendly, candlelit Tula Kitchen, vegetarian proteins and grains are organic; chicken is antibiotic and hormone free; and dishes are baked, not fried. For starters, choose a Mediterranean Spread of spinach pie, Greek salad, hummus, grilled pita and tzaziki sauce; Mexican Tortilla Pizza with roasted veggies, white bean spread, cheddar, lettuce, sour cream and guacamole; or select from interesting salads that can easily become a meal with the addition of grilled tofu or tempeh. The vegetarian/vegan section of the menu offers Sesame Crusted Tofu, Tofu Veggie Crab Cakes and the Tula Burrito.

Ariana
255 Main St., Huntington www.arianacafe.com • 631-421-2933 For a unique and tasty experience, try Ariana, an Afghani eatery in Huntington. Instead of the usual bread basket, Ariana serves a complimentary plate of pita triangles, hummus and shredded beet salad. Dinners come with salad or soup, such as vegan Golden Lentil or Mashawa, made with mung and black beans. The vegan and vegetarian entrée section of the menu offers seven interesting choices including the delectable Vegan Steak with portabella mushrooms marinated in balsamic and garlic, grilled, topped with pomegranate sauce and served over spinach with vegetables and basmati rice, as well as Aushak Kadu, homemade ravioli filled with roasted pumpkin and served with marinara. Artisan vegan ice cream is the perfect way to end the meal.
3 Brothers Pizza Cafe offers Italian favorites in both vegan and traditional versions with a comprehensive selection of appetizers, salads, brick-oven pizzas, pastas and entrées. The plant-based menu includes comfort foods like Oyster Mushroom “Calamari,” Tofu “Crab” Cakes, Mac & Cheese, Vegan Cheese Pizza and Seitan Parmesan. Traditional dishes take a super special twist with tofu, seitan or tempeh replacing animal protein. My favorite is Seitan Marsala served over mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach and smothered in a mushroom Marsala sauce.
3 Brothers Vegan Cafe 1038 Montauk Hwy., Copiague www.3brothersvegancafe.com • 631-464-4328 Thanks to the popularity of 3 Brothers Pizza Cafe, Long Island’s only all-vegan restaurant, 3 Brothers Vegan Cafe, was born. The menu features familiar appetizers, salads, sandwiches, pastas, entrées, woodfired pizzas and house-made desserts, but the eatery also prepares homemade cheese from nuts—and serves the delicious meals in an intimate dining room. Creamy homemade nut cheeses offer dairy-free twists to entrées including Eggplant Rollatini, Buffalo Seitan Panini, Baked Ziti, pizzas and calzones with just about any topping you crave, as well as more sophisticated options such as Seitan Piccata, Marsala and Scarpariello.

$ also the group’s graphic designer and artistic director. The Mexican-born superfan (he only missed two of the 2,263 shows the group played) who was often called the Fifth Ramone, was the creative mastermind who incorporated much of the band’s love of pop culture cues into the myriad T-shirt designs that far outsold the records the band recorded. The quartet’s influence clearly carried over to a younger generation including Joe, a Port Washington native visiting the exhibit from his current home over in New Jersey. “The merch sampling is awesome and the handmade things are the coolest things here,” he said. “To me,
it’s very underground music and I always forget how huge they were. My memory is always burned in them playing to 500 people at CBGBs. It’s amazing how something that objectively good could be that big.” The Hey! Ho! SWITCH HITTING
POWER BATS BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO
hen New York Yankees DH Carlos Beltran swatted his 400th career home run in a recent 7-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox, he joined an elite class of hitters—switch hitters with the most home runs—two of which are in the Baseball Hall of Fame and one of which seems destined to be there as soon as he becomes eligible. Beltran’s numbers put him behind Chipper Jones (468) and Eddie Murray (504), both of whom fall behind all-time leader Mickey Mantle (536). As is the case with most switch hitters, Beltran shows significantly more power from one side of the plate than the other.
Carlos Beltran (RH-116; LH-284) As of press time, Beltran had a lifetime .280 batting average, 2,486 hits, 1,461 RBI and is also one of only five players in the 400-home/300 stolen base club (the others being Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Willie Mays and Andre Dawson). Since debuting with the Kansas City Royals in 1998, he’s won the 1999 American League Rookie of the Year, is an eight-time MLB All-Star, won three Gold Gloves and two Silver Slugger Awards. And while he’s never won a World Series (his St. Louis Cardinals fell to the Boston Red Sox in 2013), Beltran’s post-season (particularly in 2004 with the Houston Astros) accomplishments are impressive, despite what New York Mets fans might think. Beltran is tied with Nelson Cruz for the ninth most postseason home runs with nine and in addition, the Puerto Rican native has broken the 1.000 on-base slugging percentage (OPS) mark in four different playoff series and has a 100 percent stolen base percentage (11/11) during the playoffs, which are the most stolen bases without getting caught.
Carlos Beltran
The lifetime Atlanta Brave, born Larry Wayne Jones, Jr. put in 19 years in the MLB, during which time he batted .303 lifetime, had 2,726 hits, totaled 1,623 RBI and won the World Series in 1995. Jones was named to the All-Star team eight times, was a National League MVP in 1999, won two Silver Slugger Awards and was the 2008 MLB batting champion. He is second to Eddie Murray for career RBI for a switch hitter and is the only one to hit from both sides of the plate and wind up with at least a .300 batting average and hit 400 or more home runs. And his .402 on-base percentage is the Braves’ franchise record.
Mickey Mantle (RH-164; LH 372) The Mick wrapped his 17-year career up in 1968 with a lifetime .298 batting average, 2,415 hits, 1,509 RBI and a seven-time World Series champion. Mantle was named to the All-Star game 20 times, was a threetime American League MVP, won the Triple Crown in 1956, a Gold Glove in 1962 and won the 1956 American League Batting title. Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974, the Oklahoma native made a major mark in the seven out of 12 World Series championships he won. Mantle holds the World Series record for most home runs (18), RBI (40), extra-base hits (26), runs (42), walks (43) and total bases (123).
Eddie Murray (RH-142; LH-362) Even though Murray played for six teams, he’s best known for the two stints he put in by the team that drafted him—the Baltimore Orioles. After two decades in the MLB, the Los Angeles native (who was a high school teammate of Ozzie Smith) walked away with a .287 lifetime batting average, 3,255 hits, 1,917 RBI and is tied for second with Chili Davis for most home runs hit from both sides of the plate in the same game (11). Steady Eddie finished in the Top 10 in MVP voting several times, was an eight-time All-Star, won a World Series championship in 1983, has three Gold Gloves, three Silver Slugger Awards and was the American League home run and RBI leader in 1981. He currently has the record for most RBI by a switch hitter and his 19 grand slams are fourth all-time behind Alex Rodriguez, Lou Gehrig and Manny Ramirez. No surprise then that Murray was a 2003 first-ballot Baseball Hall of Famer.
